कथंवीर्यः समभवत्स राजा वदतां वरः। कथं च जातरूपेण समयुज्यत स द्विज ॥१४-५-१॥
kathaṃvīryaḥ samabhavatsa rājā vadatāṃ varaḥ। kathaṃ ca jātarūpeṇa samayujyata sa dvija ॥14-5-1॥
[कथंवीर्यः (kathaṃvīryaḥ) - how-mighty; how-powerful; समभवत् (samabhavat) - arose; became; स (sa) - he; राजा (rājā) - king; वदतां (vadatām) - of speakers; वरः (varaḥ) - the best; कथं (kathaṃ) - how; च (ca) - and; जातरूपेण (jātarūpeṇa) - with gold; समयुज्यत (samayujyata) - he was joined; he was connected; स (sa) - he; द्विज (dvija) - twice-born; Brahmin;]
(How mighty did he become, the king, best of speakers? And how, with gold, was he joined, O twice-born?)
How did he become mighty, that king, the best among speakers? And how was he connected with gold, O twice-born? (14-5-1)
क्व च तत्साम्प्रतं द्रव्यं भगवन्नवतिष्ठते। कथं च शक्यमस्माभिस्तदवाप्तुं तपोधन ॥१४-५-२॥
kva ca tatsāmprataṃ dravyaṃ bhagavan navatiṣṭhate। kathaṃ ca śakyam asmābhis tad avāptuṃ tapodhana ॥14-5-2॥
[क्व (kva) - where; च (ca) - and; तत् (tat) - that; साम्प्रतम् (sāmpratam) - at present; द्रव्यम् (dravyaṃ) - wealth; भगवन् (bhagavan) - O venerable one; नवतिष्ठते (navatiṣṭhate) - does exist; कथम् (katham) - how; च (ca) - and; शक्यम् (śakyam) - is possible; अस्माभिः (asmābhiḥ) - by us; तत् (tat) - that; अवाप्तुम् (avāptum) - to obtain; तपोधन (tapodhana) - O possessor of austerity;]
(Where and that at present wealth, O venerable one, does exist? How and is it possible by us that to obtain, O possessor of austerity?)
O venerable one, where does that wealth exist at present? And, O possessor of austerity, how is it possible for us to obtain it? (14-5-2)

असुराश्चैव देवाश्च दक्षस्यासन्प्रजापतेः। अपत्यं बहुलं तात तेऽस्पर्धन्त परस्परम् ॥१४-५-३॥
asurāś caiva devāś ca dakṣasy āsan prajāpateḥ। apatyaṃ bahulaṃ tāta te'spardhanta parasparam॥14-5-3॥
[असुराः (asurāḥ) - asuras; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; देवाः (devāḥ) - devas; च (ca) - and; दक्षस्य (dakṣasya) - of Dakṣa; आसन् (āsan) - they were; प्रजापतेः (prajāpateḥ) - of the Lord of Progeny; अपत्यं (apatyaṃ) - offspring; बहुलं (bahulaṃ) - abundant; तात (tāta) - O dear (addressing); ते (te) - they; अस्पर्धन्त (aspardhanta) - competed; परस्परम् (parasparam) - with each other;]
(The asuras and indeed the devas, both, were the abundant offspring of Dakṣa, the Lord of Progeny; O dear, they competed with each other.)
O dear one, both asuras and devas, who were the many offspring of Dakṣa, the Lord of Progeny, contended with each other. (14-5-3)
तथैवाङ्गिरसः पुत्रौ व्रततुल्यौ बभूवतुः। बृहस्पतिर्बृहत्तेजाः संवर्तश्च तपोधनः ॥१४-५-४॥
tathaivaāṅgirasaḥ putrau vratatulyau babhūvatuḥ। bṛhaspatir bṛhattejāḥ saṁvartaś ca tapodhanaḥ ॥14-5-4॥
[तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; similarly; अङ्गिरसः (aṅgirasaḥ) - of Aṅgiras; पुत्रौ (putrau) - two sons; व्रततुल्यौ (vratatulyau) - equal to a (sacred) vow; बभूवतुः (babhūvatuḥ) - became (dual); बृहस्पतिः (bṛhaspatiḥ) - Bṛhaspati; बृहत्तेजाः (bṛhattejāḥ) - of great energy; संवर्तः (saṁvartaḥ) - Saṁvarta; च (ca) - and; तपोधनः (tapodhanaḥ) - rich in austerity;]
(In the same way, Aṅgiras' two sons, equal to a vow, became: Bṛhaspati, of great energy, and Saṁvarta, rich in austerity.)
Likewise, Aṅgiras had two sons equal to a vow—Bṛhaspati, of great energy, and Saṁvarta, rich in austerity. (14-5-4)
तावपि स्पर्धिनौ राजन्पृथगास्तां परस्परम्। बृहस्पतिश्च संवर्तं बाधते स्म पुनः पुनः ॥१४-५-५॥
tāv api spardhinau rājan pṛthag āstāṁ parasparam। bṛhaspatiś ca saṁvartaṁ bādhate sma punaḥ punaḥ॥14-5-5॥
[तौ (tau) - those two; अपि (api) - also; स्पर्धिनौ (spardhinau) - rivals; राजन् (rājan) - O king; पृथक् (pṛthak) - separately; आस्ताम् (āstām) - remained; परस्परम् (parasparam) - towards each other; बृहस्पतिः (bṛhaspatiḥ) - Bṛhaspati (proper noun; name of a sage); च (ca) - and; संवर्तम् (saṁvartam) - Saṁvarta (proper noun; name of a sage); बाधते (bādhate) - oppressed; स्म (sma) - indeed (particle indicating past); पुनः (punaḥ) - again; पुनः (punaḥ) - again;]
(Those two also, O king, as rivals, remained separately towards each other; Bṛhaspati indeed oppressed Saṁvarta again and again.)
O king, those two rivals also stayed apart from each other, and Bṛhaspati repeatedly harassed Saṁvarta. (14-5-5)
स बाध्यमानः सततं भ्रात्रा ज्येष्ठेन भारत। अर्थानुत्सृज्य दिग्वासा वनवासमरोचयत् ॥१४-५-६॥
sa bādhyamānaḥ satataṃ bhrātrā jyeṣṭhena bhārata। arthān utsṛjya digvāsā vanavāsam arocayat ॥14-5-6॥
[स (sa) - he; बाध्यमानः (bādhyamānaḥ) - being oppressed; सततम् (satatam) - constantly; भ्रात्रा (bhrātrā) - by the brother; ज्येष्ठेन (jyeṣṭhena) - elder; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; अर्थान् (arthān) - wealth; उत्सृज्य (utsṛjya) - having abandoned; दिग्वासा (digvāsā) - clad in directions (naked); वनवासम् (vanavāsam) - forest-dwelling; अरोचयत् (arocayat) - he desired.;]
(He, being oppressed constantly by the brother, the elder, O Bhārata, having abandoned wealth, clad in directions, desired dwelling in the forest.)
O Bhārata, constantly oppressed by his elder brother, he abandoned his wealth, donned only the directions (became naked), and chose to live in the forest. (14-5-6)
वासवोऽप्यसुरान्सर्वान्निर्जित्य च निहत्य च। इन्द्रत्वं प्राप्य लोकेषु ततो वव्रे पुरोहितम् ॥ पुत्रमङ्गिरसो ज्येष्ठं विप्रश्रेष्ठं बृहस्पतिम् ॥१४-५-७॥
vāsavo'py asurān sarvān nirjitya ca nihatya ca। indratvaṃ prāpya lokeṣu tato vavre purohitam ॥ putram aṅgiraso jyeṣṭhaṃ vipraśreṣṭhaṃ bṛhaspatim ॥14-5-7॥
[वासवः (vāsavaḥ) - Indra; अपि (api) - also; असुरान् (asurān) - demons; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; निर्जित्य (nirjitya) - having conquered; च (ca) - and; निहत्य (nihatya) - having slain; च (ca) - and; इन्द्रत्वं (indratvaṃ) - Indra-hood; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having obtained; लोकेषु (lokeṣu) - among the worlds; ततः (tataḥ) - then; वव्रे (vavre) - he chose; पुरोहितम् (purohitam) - priest; पुत्रम् (putram) - son; अङ्गिरसः (aṅgirasaḥ) - of Aṅgiras; ज्येष्ठम् (jyeṣṭham) - eldest; विप्रश्रेष्ठम् (vipraśreṣṭham) - the best of Brāhmaṇas; बृहस्पतिम् (bṛhaspatim) - Bṛhaspati;]
(Indra also, all demons having conquered and having slain, Indra-hood having obtained among the worlds, then chose priest; son of Aṅgiras, eldest, the best of Brāhmaṇas, Bṛhaspati.)
Indra too, having conquered and slain all the demons, after obtaining Indra-hood among the worlds, then chose as his priest the eldest son of Aṅgiras, the best of Brāhmaṇas, Bṛhaspati. (14-5-7)
याज्यस्त्वङ्गिरसः पूर्वमासीद्राजा करन्धमः। वीर्येणाप्रतिमो लोके वृत्तेन च बलेन च ॥ शतक्रतुरिवौजस्वी धर्मात्मा संशितव्रतः ॥१४-५-८॥
yājyas tvaṅgirasaḥ pūrvam āsīd rājā karandhamaḥ। vīryeṇāpratimo loke vṛttena ca balena ca॥ śatakratur ivauj asvī dharmātmā saṁśitavrataḥ॥14-5-8॥
[याज्यः (yājyaḥ) - worthy of sacrifice; respected; worthy of worship; त्वङ्गिरसः (tvaṅgirasaḥ) - but of the Aṅgiras (ancestral line); पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - formerly; आसीत् (āsīt) - existed; was; राजा (rājā) - king; करन्धमः (karandhamaḥ) - Karandhama (a proper noun; name of the king); वीर्येण (vīryeṇa) - by might; by strength; अप्रतिमः (apratimaḥ) - peerless; without equal; लोके (loke) - in the world; वृत्तेन (vṛttena) - by conduct; च (ca) - and; बलेन (balena) - by strength; च (ca) - and; शतक्रतुः (śatakratuḥ) - Indra (lit. one with a hundred performances of sacrifice); इव (iva) - like; औजस्वी (aujasvī) - possessing vigor; धर्मात्मा (dharmātmā) - righteous-souled; virtuous; संशितव्रतः (saṁśitavrataḥ) - firm in vow; resolute in observance of vows;]
(But of the Aṅgiras lineage formerly was the king Karandhama, worthy of sacrifice. By might peerless in the world, by conduct and by strength. Like Indra in vigor, righteous-souled, resolute in vow. (14-5-8))
Karandhama, a king of the Aṅgiras lineage, worthy of worship, lived formerly. He was peerless in his might, conduct, and strength in the world—like Indra in vigor, righteous in soul and resolute in his vows. (14-5-8)
वाहनं यस्य योधाश्च द्रव्याणि विविधानि च। ध्यानादेवाभवद्राजन्मुखवातेन सर्वशः ॥१४-५-९॥
vāhanaṃ yasya yodhāś ca dravyāṇi vividhāni ca. dhyānād evābhavad rājā mukha-vātena sarvaśaḥ ॥14-5-9॥
[वाहनं (vāhanam) - vehicle; यस्य (yasya) - whose; योधाः (yodhāḥ) - warriors; च (ca) - and; द्रव्याणि (dravyāṇi) - objects; विविधानि (vividhāni) - various; च (ca) - and; ध्यानात् (dhyānāt) - from meditation; एव (eva) - indeed; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; राजन् (rājan) - O king; मुखवातेन (mukha-vātena) - by the breath from the mouth; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - in every way;]
(Vehicle whose, and warriors, objects various and, from meditation indeed became, O king, by the breath from the mouth, in every way.)
O king, by meditation alone—and by the breath from (his) mouth—his vehicle, warriors, and various objects all came into being in every way. (14-5-9)
स गुणैः पार्थिवान्सर्वान्वशे चक्रे नराधिपः। सञ्जीव्य कालमिष्टं च सशरीरो दिवं गतः ॥१४-५-१०॥
sa guṇaiḥ pārthivān sarvān vaśe cakre narādhipaḥ. sañjīvya kālam iṣṭam ca sa-śarīraḥ divaṃ gataḥ ॥14-5-10॥
[स (sa) - he; गुणैः (guṇaiḥ) - by virtues; पार्थिवान् (pārthivān) - kings; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; वशे (vaśe) - under control; चक्रे (cakre) - made; नराधिपः (narādhipaḥ) - the lord of men; सञ्जीव्य (sañjīvya) - having lived; कालम् (kālam) - the time; इष्टम् (iṣṭam) - desired; च (ca) - and; सशरीरः (sa-śarīraḥ) - with his body; दिवम् (divam) - to heaven; गतः (gataḥ) - went;]
(He, by virtues, all kings under control made, the lord of men. Having lived the desired time, and with his body, to heaven went.)
He, possessing virtues, made all the kings submit to his authority, becoming the lord of men. Having lived out his desired lifespan, he went to heaven with his body. (14-5-10)
बभूव तस्य पुत्रस्तु ययातिरिव धर्मवित्। अविक्षिन्नाम शत्रुक्षित्स वशे कृतवान्महीम् ॥ विक्रमेण गुणैश्चैव पितेवासीत्स पार्थिवः ॥१४-५-११॥
babhūva tasya putras tu yayātir iva dharmavit। avikṣinnām śatrukṣit sa vaśe kṛtvān mahīm॥ vikrameṇa guṇaiś caiva piteva āsīt sa pārthivaḥ॥14-5-11॥
[बभूव (babhūva) - became; तस्य (tasya) - his; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; तु (tu) - but; ययातिरिव (yayātir iva) - like Yayāti; धर्मवित् (dharmavit) - knower of dharma; अविक्षिन्नाम् (avikṣinnām) - unbroken; शत्रुक्षित् (śatrukṣit) - subduer of enemies; सः (saḥ) - he; वशे (vaśe) - under control; कृतवान् (kṛtvān) - brought; महीम् (mahīm) - the earth; विक्रमेण (vikrameṇa) - by valor; गुणैः (guṇaiḥ) - by virtues; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; पितेव (piteva) - like a father; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; सः (saḥ) - he; पार्थिवः (pārthivaḥ) - king;]
(But his son became a knower of dharma like Yayāti; he, being a subduer of enemies, brought the unbroken earth under control. By valor and virtues indeed, he was like a father, that king.)
His son, like Yayāti, became a knower of dharma; he subdued his foes and brought the entire earth under his control. That king, through valor and virtues, was just like a father. (14-5-11)
तस्य वासवतुल्योऽभून्मरुत्तो नाम वीर्यवान्। पुत्रस्तमनुरक्ताभूत्पृथिवी सागराम्बरा ॥१४-५-१२॥
tasya vāsavatulyo'bhūn marutto nāma vīryavān। putras tam anuraktābhūt pṛthivī sāgarāmbarā ॥14-5-12॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; वासवतुल्यः (vāsavatulyaḥ) - equal to Vāsava (Indra); अभूत् (abhūt) - was; मरुत्तः (maruttaḥ) - Marutta; नाम (nāma) - by name; वीर्यवान् (vīryavān) - possessing power; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; तम् (tam) - him; अनुरक्ता अभूत् (anuraktā abhūt) - was fond of; पृथिवी (pṛthivī) - the earth; सागराम्बरा (sāgarāmbarā) - having ocean as a garment;]
(Of him, equal to Vāsava was Marutta by name, a possessor of power. The earth, having ocean as a garment, was fond of that son.)
Marutta, powerful and equal to Indra, was his son by name. The earth, with the ocean as her garment, was fond of him. (14-5-12)
स्पर्धते सततं स स्म देवराजेन पार्थिवः। वासवोऽपि मरुत्तेन स्पर्धते पाण्डुनन्दन ॥१४-५-१३॥
spardhate satataṃ sa sma devarājena pārthivaḥ। vāsavo'pi maruttena spardhate pāṇḍunandana ॥14-5-13॥
[स्पर्धते (spardhate) - competes; सततं (satataṃ) - constantly; स (sa) - he; स्म (sma) - indeed; देवराजेन (devarājena) - with the king of the gods (Indra); पार्थिवः (pārthivaḥ) - the king; वासवः (vāsavaḥ) - Indra; अपि (api) - also; मरुत्तेन (maruttena) - with Marutta; स्पर्धते (spardhate) - competes; पाण्डुनन्दन (pāṇḍunandana) - O son of Pāṇḍu;]
(He constantly indeed competes with the king of the gods, the king. Indra also with Marutta competes, O son of Pandu.)
The king indeed constantly competes with Indra, the king of the gods; and Indra in turn competes with Marutta, O son of Pandu. (14-5-13)
शुचिः स गुणवानासीन्मरुत्तः पृथिवीपतिः। यतमानोऽपि यं शक्रो न विशेषयति स्म ह ॥१४-५-१४॥
śuciḥ sa guṇavān āsīn maruttaḥ pṛthivīpatiḥ। yatamānaḥ api yam śakraḥ na viśeṣayati sma ha ॥14-5-14॥
[शुचिः (śuciḥ) - pure; स (sa) - he; गुणवान् (guṇavān) - endowed with virtues; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; मरुत्तः (maruttaḥ) - Marutta (proper noun); पृथिवीपतिः (pṛthivīpatiḥ) - lord of the earth; यतमानः (yatamānaḥ) - making effort; अपि (api) - even; यं (yam) - whom; शक्रः (śakraḥ) - Indra; न (na) - not; विशेषयति (viśeṣayati) - overcomes; स्म (sma) - (indeed) [particle indicating past habitual action]; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(Pure, he, possessed of virtues, was Marutta, lord of the earth. While making effort even, whom Indra did not overcome indeed.)
Marutta, the lord of the earth, was pure and virtuous. Even when striving, he was not overcome by Indra. (14-5-14)
सोऽशक्नुवन्विशेषाय समाहूय बृहस्पतिम्। उवाचेदं वचो देवैः सहितो हरिवाहनः ॥१४-५-१५॥
so'śaknuvan-viśeṣāya samāhūya bṛhaspatim। uvāca idaṃ vacaḥ devaiḥ sahitaḥ harivāhanaḥ ॥14-5-15॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अशक्नुवन् (aśaknuvan) - being unable; विशेषाय (viśeṣāya) - for the purpose of a special result; समाहूय (samāhūya) - having summoned; बृहस्पतिम् (bṛhaspatim) - Bṛhaspati; उवाच (uvāca) - spoke; इदं (idaṃ) - this; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech; देवैः (devaiḥ) - with the gods; सहितः (sahitaḥ) - together; हरिवाहनः (harivāhanaḥ) - the one whose vehicle is Hari (Indra);]
(He, being unable for the purpose of a special result, having summoned Bṛhaspati, spoke this speech together with the gods, the one whose vehicle is Hari (Indra).)
He, unable to achieve the desired result, summoned Bṛhaspati and, together with the gods, Indra (the bearer of Hari), spoke these words. (14-5-15)
बृहस्पते मरुत्तस्य मा स्म कार्षीः कथञ्चन। दैवं कर्माथ वा पित्र्यं कर्तासि मम चेत्प्रियम् ॥१४-५-१६॥
bṛhaspate maruttasya mā sma kārṣīḥ kathañcana। daivaṃ karmātha vā pitryaṃ kartāsi mama cetpriyam ॥14-5-16॥
[बृहस्पते (bṛhaspate) - O Bṛhaspati; (vocative); मरुत्तस्य (maruttasya) - of Marutta; (genitive singular); मा (mā) - do not; (prohibitive particle); स्म (sma) - indeed; (emphatic particle); कार्षीः (kārṣīḥ) - you should perform; (second person singular, optative); कथञ्चन (kathañcana) - in any way; (adverb); दैवं (daivaṃ) - divine; (accusative singular, substantive); कर्म (karma) - act; deed; (accusative singular); अथ (atha) - or; then; (conjunction); वा (vā) - or; (particle); पित्र्यं (pitryaṃ) - ancestral; relating to the fathers; (accusative singular); कर्तासि (kartāsi) - you do/may do; (second person singular, optative); मम (mama) - my; for me; (genitive singular); चेत् (cet) - if; (conditional particle); प्रियम् (priyam) - dear; pleasing; (accusative singular, substantive);]
(O Bṛhaspati, of Marutta, do not indeed perform in any way, whether a divine act or ancestral, if you do that which is dear to me.)
O Bṛhaspati, do not in any way perform for Marutta either a divine rite or an ancestral one, if you wish to please me. (14-5-16)
अहं हि त्रिषु लोकेषु सुराणां च बृहस्पते। इन्द्रत्वं प्राप्तवानेको मरुत्तस्तु महीपतिः ॥१४-५-१७॥
ahaṃ hi triṣu lokeṣu surāṇāṃ ca bṛhaspate. indratvaṃ prāptavāneko maruttastu mahīpatiḥ ॥14-5-17॥
[अहं (ahaṃ) - I; हि (hi) - indeed; त्रिषु (triṣu) - in the three; लोकेषु (lokeṣu) - worlds; सुराणां (surāṇām) - of the gods; च (ca) - and; बृहस्पते (bṛhaspate) - O Bṛhaspati; इन्द्रत्वं (indratvaṃ) - Indra-hood; प्राप्तवान् (prāptavān) - has obtained; एको (eko) - alone; मरुत्तः (maruttaḥ) - Marutta; तु (tu) - but; महीपतिः (mahīpatiḥ) - king;]
(I indeed in the three worlds, of the gods and, O Bṛhaspati, Indra-hood has obtained alone Marutta but king.)
O Bṛhaspati, I alone, among the gods in the three worlds, have obtained the position of Indra; but King Marutta has also attained it. (14-5-17)
कथं ह्यमर्त्यं ब्रह्मंस्त्वं याजयित्वा सुराधिपम्। याजयेर्मृत्युसंयुक्तं मरुत्तमविशङ्कया ॥१४-५-१८॥
kathaṁ hy amartyaṁ brahmaṁs tvaṁ yājayitvā surādhipam। yājayer mṛtyusaṁyuktaṁ maruttaṁ aviśaṅkayā ॥14-5-18॥
[कथं (kathaṁ) - how; हि (hi) - indeed; अमर्त्यं (amartyaṁ) - immortal; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brāhmaṇa; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; याजयित्वा (yājayitvā) - having made to perform a sacrifice; सुराधिपम् (surādhipam) - the lord of the gods (Indra); याजयेः (yājayeḥ) - would you make to perform sacrifice; मृत्युसंयुक्तं (mṛtyusaṁyuktaṁ) - endowed with mortality; मरुत्तम् (maruttam) - Marutta; अविशङ्कया (aviśaṅkayā) - without scruple;]
(How indeed, O Brāhmaṇa, you, having made the immortal lord of gods (Indra) perform a sacrifice, would you, without scruple, make Marutta, who is endowed with mortality, perform (the sacrifice)?)
O Brāhmaṇa, how could you, having conducted a sacrifice for the immortal lord of the gods, without hesitation propose to conduct a sacrifice for Marutta, who is subject to mortality? (14-5-18)
मां वा वृणीष्व भद्रं ते मरुत्तं वा महीपतिम्। परित्यज्य मरुत्तं वा यथाजोषं भजस्व माम् ॥१४-५-१९॥
māṃ vā vṛṇīṣva bhadraṃ te maruttaṃ vā mahīpatim। parityajya maruttaṃ vā yathājoṣaṃ bhajasva mām॥14-5-19॥
[मां (māṃ) - me; वा (vā) - or; वृणीष्व (vṛṇīṣva) - choose; भद्रं (bhadraṃ) - auspicious; ते (te) - for you; मरुत्तं (maruttaṃ) - Marutta; वा (vā) - or; महीपतिम् (mahīpatim) - king; परित्यज्य (parityajya) - having abandoned; मरुत्तं (maruttaṃ) - Marutta; वा (vā) - or; यथाजोषं (yathājoṣaṃ) - according to inclination; भजस्व (bhajasva) - take (as husband); माम् (mām) - me;]
(Me or choose, auspicious for you, Marutta or king. Having abandoned Marutta or, according to inclination, take me.)
Choose me or the auspicious Marutta, the king, for yourself. Abandoning Marutta if you wish, take me according to your inclination. (14-5-19)
एवमुक्तः स कौरव्य देवराज्ञा बृहस्पतिः। मुहूर्तमिव सञ्चिन्त्य देवराजानमब्रवीत् ॥१४-५-२०॥
evam-uktaḥ sa kauravya devarājñā bṛhaspatiḥ। muhūrtam-iva sañcintya devarājānam abravīt॥14-5-20॥
[एवमुक्तः (evam-uktaḥ) - thus spoken to; स (sa) - he; कौरव्य (kauravya) - O descendant of Kuru; देवराज्ञा (devarājñā) - by the lord of the gods; बृहस्पतिः (bṛhaspatiḥ) - Bṛhaspati; मुहूर्तमिव (muhūrtam-iva) - as if for a moment; सञ्चिन्त्य (sañcintya) - having considered; देवराजानम् (devarājānam) - to the lord of the gods; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - he said;]
(Thus spoken to, he, O Kauravya, by the lord of the gods, Bṛhaspati, as if for a moment having considered, to the lord of the gods, spoke.)
O Kauravya, when thus addressed by the lord of the gods, Bṛhaspati, after considering for a moment, spoke to the lord of the gods. (14-5-20)
त्वं भूतानामधिपतिस्त्वयि लोकाः प्रतिष्ठिताः। नमुचेर्विश्वरूपस्य निहन्ता त्वं बलस्य च ॥१४-५-२१॥
tvaṃ bhūtānām adhipatis tvayi lokāḥ pratiṣṭhitāḥ। namucer viśvarūpasya nihantā tvaṃ balasya ca ॥14-5-21॥
[त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; भूतानाम् (bhūtānām) - of beings; अधिपतिः (adhipatiḥ) - lord; त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; लोकाः (lokāḥ) - the worlds; प्रतिष्ठिताः (pratiṣṭhitāḥ) - are established; नमुचः (namucaḥ) - of Namuci; विश्वरूपस्य (viśvarūpasya) - of Viśvarūpa; निहन्ता (nihantā) - slayer; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; बलस्य (balasya) - of Bala; च (ca) - and;]
(You of beings lord, in you the worlds are established. Of Namuci and of Viśvarūpa slayer you, of Bala and.)
You are the lord of beings; the worlds are established in you. You are the slayer of Namuci, Viśvarūpa, and also Bala. (14-5-21)
त्वमाजहर्थ देवानामेको वीर श्रियं पराम्। त्वं बिभर्षि भुवं द्यां च सदैव बलसूदन ॥१४-५-२२॥
tvam ājahartha devānām eko vīra śriyaṃ parām। tvaṃ bibharṣi bhuvaṃ dyāṃ ca sadaiva balasūdana ॥14-5-22॥
[त्वम् (tvam) - you; आजहर्थ (ājahartha) - have taken; (from 'ā-hṛ', to take, carry to oneself, perfect tense, 2nd person singular); देवानाम् (devānām) - of the gods; एकः (eko) - alone; one; वीर (vīra) - hero; श्रियम् (śriyam) - splendor; abundance; prosperity; पराम् (parām) - supreme; highest; त्वम् (tvam) - you; बिभर्षि (bibharṣi) - bear; carry; (2nd person singular, present tense, root 'bhṛ', to bear); भुवम् (bhuvam) - the earth; द्याम् (dyām) - the heaven; sky; च (ca) - and; सदैव (sadaiva) - always; at all times; बलसूदन (balasūdana) - O destroyer of strength (enemy);]
(You alone, O hero, have taken the supreme splendor of the gods. You bear the earth and the heaven always, O destroyer of strength.)
O destroyer of strength, you alone, O hero, have brought the supreme splendor of the gods, and you always support both the earth and heaven. (14-5-22)
पौरोहित्यं कथं कृत्वा तव देवगणेश्वर। याजयेयमहं मर्त्यं मरुत्तं पाकशासन ॥१४-५-२३॥
paurohityaṃ kathaṃ kṛtvā tava devagaṇeśvara। yājayeyam ahaṃ martyaṃ maruttaṃ pākaśāsana ॥14-5-23॥
[पौरोहित्यं (paurohityaṃ) - priesthood; कथं (kathaṃ) - how; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having performed; तव (tava) - your; देवगणेश्वर (devagaṇeśvara) - lord of the host of gods; याजयेयम् (yājayeyam) - might I cause to be performed a sacrifice; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; मर्त्यं (martyaṃ) - mortal; मरुत्तं (maruttaṃ) - Marutta; पाकशासन (pākaśāsana) - O Indra (slayer of Pāka, a demon);]
(Priesthood how having performed your, O lord of the host of gods, might I cause to be performed a sacrifice, I (for the) mortal Marutta, O Indra.)
O lord of the host of gods, having performed your priesthood, how might I be able to conduct the sacrifice for the mortal Marutta, O Indra? (14-5-23)
समाश्वसिहि देवेश नाहं मर्त्याय कर्हिचित्। ग्रहीष्यामि स्रुवं यज्ञे शृणु चेदं वचो मम ॥१४-५-२४॥
samāśvasihi deveśa nāhaṁ martyāya karhicit। grahīṣyāmi sruvaṁ yajñe śṛṇu cedaṁ vaco mama ॥14-5-24॥
[समाश्वसिहि (samāśvasihi) - be consoled; देवेश (deveśa) - O lord of the gods; न (na) - not; अहम् (aham) - I; मर्त्याय (martyāya) - to a mortal; कर्हिचित् (karhicit) - ever; ग्रहिष्यामि (grahīṣyāmi) - will accept; स्रुवम् (sruvam) - the ladle; यज्ञे (yajñe) - in a sacrifice; शृणु (śṛṇu) - listen; च (ca) - and; इदम् (idam) - this; वचः (vacaḥ) - word; मम (mama) - of mine;]
(Be consoled, O lord of the gods; I shall not ever accept the ladle from a mortal in sacrifice; and listen to this word of mine.)
Take comfort, O lord of the gods; I will never accept the ladle in a sacrifice from a mortal. Also, listen to this my word. (14-5-24)
हिरण्यरेतसोऽम्भः स्यात्परिवर्तेत मेदिनी। भासं च न रविः कुर्यान्मत्सत्यं विचलेद्यदि ॥१४-५-२५॥
hiraṇyaretaso’mbhaḥ syāt parivarteta medinī। bhāsaṃ ca na raviḥ kuryān mat satyaṃ vicaled yadi॥14-5-25॥
[हिरण्यरेतसः (hiraṇyaretasaḥ) - of the golden-semened (sun); अम्भः (ambhaḥ) - water; स्यात् (syāt) - should be; परिवर्तेत (parivarteta) - should be turned; मेदिनी (medinī) - the earth; भासं (bhāsaṃ) - light; च (ca) - and; न (na) - not; रविः (raviḥ) - the sun; कुर्यात् (kuryāt) - should produce; मत् (mat) - my; सत्यं (satyaṃ) - truth; विचलेत् (vicalet) - should waver; यदि (yadi) - if;]
(If my truth should waver, let the water of the golden-semened (sun) become, let the earth be turned; and let the sun not produce light.)
If my truth should waver, may the waters of the golden-semened sun arise, the earth be overturned, and the sun cease to give light. (14-5-25)
बृहस्पतिवचः श्रुत्वा शक्रो विगतमत्सरः। प्रशस्यैनं विवेशाथ स्वमेव भवनं तदा ॥१४-५-२६॥
bṛhaspativacaḥ śrutvā śakro vigatamatsaraḥ। praśasyainaṃ viveśātha svameva bhavanaṃ tadā ॥14-5-26॥
[बृहस्पतिवचः (bṛhaspativacaḥ) - the words of Bṛhaspati; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; शक्रः (śakraḥ) - Śakra (Indra, proper name); विगतमत्सरः (vigatamatsaraḥ) - devoid of envy; प्रशस्य (praśasya) - having praised; एनम् (enam) - him; विवेश (viveśa) - he entered; अथ (atha) - then; स्वम् (svam) - his own; एव (eva) - indeed; भवनम् (bhavanam) - abode; तदा (tadā) - at that time;]
(Having heard the words of Bṛhaspati, Śakra, devoid of envy, having praised him, then entered his own abode at that time.)
Śakra, after hearing the words of Bṛhaspati and praising him, being now free from envy, then entered his own abode at that time. (14-5-26)
