इत्युक्ते नृपतौ तस्मिन्व्यासेनाद्भुतकर्मणा। वासुदेवो महातेजास्ततो वचनमाददे ॥१४-११-१॥
ityukte nṛpatau tasmin vyāsena adbhutakarmaṇā। vāsudevaḥ mahātejāḥ tataḥ vacanam ādade ॥14-11-1॥
[इत्युक्ते (ityukte) - when thus spoken; नृपतौ (nṛpatau) - to the king; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - to him; व्यासेन (vyāsena) - by Vyāsa; अद्भुतकर्मणा (adbhutakarmaṇā) - having marvelous deeds; वासुदेवः (vāsudevaḥ) - Vāsudeva; महातेजाः (mahātejāḥ) - of great splendor; ततः (tataḥ) - then; वचनम् (vacanam) - speech; आददे (ādade) - undertook;]
(When thus spoken to the king by Vyāsa of marvelous deeds, Vāsudeva of great splendor then undertook speech.)
When Vyāsa of marvelous deeds thus addressed the king, Vāsudeva, who is of great splendor, then made a statement. (14-11-1)
तं नृपं दीनमनसं निहतज्ञातिबान्धवम्। उपप्लुतमिवादित्यं सधूममिव पावकम् ॥१४-११-२॥
taṁ nṛpaṁ dīnam-anasaṁ nihatajñātibāndhavam। upaplutam-iva ādityaṁ sadhūmam-iva pāvakam॥14-11-2॥
[तं (taṁ) - him; नृपं (nṛpam) - king; दीनमनसं (dīnam-anasaṁ) - sorrowful-minded; निहतज्ञातिबान्धवम् (nihata-jñāti-bāndhavam) - with slain relatives and friends; उपप्लुतम् (upaplutam) - afflicted; इव (iva) - like; आदित्यम् (ādityam) - the sun; सधूमम् (sadhūmam) - with smoke; इव (iva) - like; पावकम् (pāvakam) - fire;]
(Him, the king, sorrowful-minded, with slain relatives and friends, afflicted like the sun, like fire with smoke.)
That king, whose mind was sorrowful, his kinsmen and friends having been slain, afflicted like the sun overshadowed, like fire accompanied by smoke. (14-11-2)
निर्विण्णमनसं पार्थं ज्ञात्वा वृष्णिकुलोद्वहः। आश्वासयन्धर्मसुतं प्रवक्तुमुपचक्रमे ॥१४-११-३॥
nirviṇṇamanasaṁ pārthaṁ jñātvā vṛṣṇikulodvahaḥ। āśvāsayan dharmasutaṁ pravaktum upacakrame॥14-11-3॥
[निर्विण्णमनसं (nirviṇṇamanasam) - having despondent mind; पार्थं (pārtham) - Pārtha (Arjuna); ज्ञात्वा (jñātvā) - having known; वृष्णिकुलोद्वहः (vṛṣṇikulodvahaḥ) - the foremost of the Vṛṣṇi clan; आश्वासयन् (āśvāsayan) - consoling; धर्मसुतं (dharmasutam) - the son of Dharma (Yudhiṣṭhira); प्रवक्तुम् (pravaktum) - to speak; उपचक्रमे (upacakrame) - he began;]
(Having known Pārtha with a despondent mind, the foremost of the Vṛṣṇi clan, consoling the son of Dharma, began to speak.)
Seeing Pārtha (Arjuna) dispirited, the foremost of the Vṛṣṇis began to console the son of Dharma (Yudhiṣṭhira) and started to speak. (14-11-3)

Vasudeva said.
सर्वं जिह्मं मृत्युपदमार्जवं ब्रह्मणः पदम्। एतावाञ्ज्ञानविषयः किं प्रलापः करिष्यति ॥१४-११-४॥
sarvaṃ jihmaṃ mṛtyupadam ārjavaṃ brahmaṇaḥ padam. etāvāñjñānaviṣayaḥ kiṃ pralāpaḥ kariṣyati ॥14-11-4॥
[सर्वं (sarvaṃ) - all; everything; जिह्मं (jihmaṃ) - crooked; deviating; मृत्युपदम् (mṛtyupadam) - state of death; mortal condition; आर्जवं (ārjavam) - straightness; honesty; ब्रह्मणः (brahmaṇaḥ) - of Brahman; पदम् (padam) - state; path; goal; एतावान् (etāvān) - so much; thus far; ज्ञानविषयः (jñānaviṣayaḥ) - the object of knowledge; किम् (kim) - what; प्रलापः (pralāpaḥ) - talk; prattle; करिष्यति (kariṣyati) - will do; accomplish;]
(All crooked is the state of death; straightness is the state of Brahman. This much is the object of knowledge; what will talk accomplish?)
Everything crooked belongs to the realm of death; straightness is the domain of Brahman. This is all that knowledge concerns; what will idle talk accomplish? (14-11-4)
नैव ते निष्ठितं कर्म नैव ते शत्रवो जिताः। कथं शत्रुं शरीरस्थमात्मानं नावबुध्यसे ॥१४-११-५॥
naiva te niṣṭhitaṃ karma naiva te śatravo jitāḥ। kathaṃ śatruṃ śarīrastham ātmānaṃ nāvabudhyase ॥14-11-5॥
[नैव (na eva) - not indeed; ते (te) - your; निष्ठितं (niṣṭhitam) - established; कर्म (karma) - action; नैव (na eva) - not indeed; ते (te) - your; शत्रवः (śatravaḥ) - enemies; जिताः (jitāḥ) - conquered; कथं (kathaṃ) - how; शत्रुं (śatrum) - enemy; शरीरस्थम् (śarīrastham) - residing in the body; आत्मानं (ātmānam) - the self; न (na) - not; अवबुध्यसे (avabudhyase) - do you perceive;]
(Not indeed is your action established, not indeed are your enemies conquered. How do you not perceive the enemy residing in the body, the self?)
Your actions are not truly established, nor have you really conquered your enemies. How is it that you do not recognize the enemy dwelling in your own body, the self? (14-11-5)
अत्र ते वर्तयिष्यामि यथाधर्मं यथाश्रुतम्। इन्द्रस्य सह वृत्रेण यथा युद्धमवर्तत ॥१४-११-६॥
atra te vartayiṣyāmi yathā-dharmaṁ yathā-śrutam। indrasya saha vṛtreṇa yathā yuddham avartata ॥14-11-6॥
[अत्र (atra) - here; ते (te) - to you; वर्तयिष्यामि (vartayiṣyāmi) - I will relate; यथा धर्मम् (yathā dharmam) - according to dharma; यथा श्रुतम् (yathā śrutam) - as heard; इन्द्रस्य (indrasya) - of Indra; सह वृत्रेण (saha vṛtreṇa) - with Vṛtra; यथा (yathā) - how; युद्धम् (yuddham) - battle; अवर्तत (avartata) - occurred;]
(Here to you I will relate according to dharma, as heard, of Indra with Vṛtra how the battle occurred.)
Here, I will tell you, as is right and as I have heard, how the battle between Indra and Vṛtra took place. (14-11-6)
वृत्रेण पृथिवी व्याप्ता पुरा किल नराधिप। दृष्ट्वा स पृथिवीं व्याप्तां गन्धस्य विषये हृते ॥ धराहरणदुर्गन्धो विषयः समपद्यत ॥१४-११-७॥
vṛtreṇa pṛthivī vyāptā purā kila narādhipa. dṛṣṭvā sa pṛthivīṃ vyāptāṃ gandhasya viṣaye hṛte ॥ dharaharaṇadurgandho viṣayaḥ samapadyata ॥14-11-7॥
[वृत्रेण (vṛtreṇa) - by Vṛtra; पृथिवी (pṛthivī) - the earth; व्याप्ता (vyāptā) - covered; पुरा (purā) - formerly; किल (kila) - indeed; नराधिप (narādhipa) - O prince; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; स (sa) - he; पृथिवीं (pṛthivīṃ) - the earth; व्याप्तां (vyāptāṃ) - covered; गन्धस्य (gandhasya) - of fragrance; विषये (viṣaye) - in the field; हृते (hṛte) - taken away; धराहरणदुर्गन्धः (dharaharaṇadurgandhaḥ) - after the earth was seized, bad odour; विषयः (viṣayaḥ) - the realm; समपद्यत (samapadyata) - came to be;]
(By Vṛtra, the earth covered, formerly indeed, O prince. Having seen, he the earth covered, of fragrance in the field taken away. After the earth was seized, bad odour, the realm became.)
O prince, in former times indeed, the earth was covered by Vṛtra. Seeing the earth thus covered, when the fragrance was removed from the realm, after the earth was seized, the realm became filled with foul odor. (14-11-7)
शतक्रतुश्चुकोपाथ गन्धस्य विषये हृते। वृत्रस्य स ततः क्रुद्धो वज्रं घोरमवासृजत् ॥१४-११-८॥
śatakratuś cukopātha gandhasya viṣaye hṛte। vṛtrasya sa tataḥ kruddho vajraṃ ghoram avāsṛjat ॥14-11-8॥
[शतक्रतुः (śatakratuḥ) - the hundred-sacrificed one (epithet of Indra); चुकोप (cukopa) - became angry; अथ (atha) - then; गन्धस्य (gandhasya) - of fragrance; विषये (viṣaye) - in the matter; हृते (hṛte) - when taken away; वृत्रस्य (vṛtrasya) - of Vṛtra; सः (saḥ) - he; ततः (tataḥ) - thereupon; क्रुद्धः (kruddhaḥ) - angry; वज्रं (vajram) - thunderbolt; घोरम् (ghoram) - terrible; अवासृजत् (avāsṛjat) - he hurled;]
(Śatakratu (the hundred-sacrificed one) became angry then when the fragrance was taken away in the matter; of Vṛtra, he thereupon, angry, the terrible thunderbolt he hurled.)
Śatakratu (Indra) then became angry when the fragrance was taken away; thereupon, filled with rage at Vṛtra, he hurled his terrible thunderbolt. (14-11-8)
स वध्यमानो वज्रेण पृथिव्यां भूरितेजसा। विवेश सहसैवापो जग्राह विषयं ततः ॥१४-११-९॥
sa vadhyamānaḥ vajreṇa pṛthivyām bhūritejasā। viveśa sahasā eva āpaḥ jagrāha viṣayam tataḥ॥14-11-9॥
[स (sa) - he; वध्यमानः (vadhyamānaḥ) - being struck; वज्रेण (vajreṇa) - by the thunderbolt; पृथिव्यां (pṛthivyām) - on the earth; भूरितेजसा (bhūritejasā) - of great energy; विवेश (viveśa) - entered; सहसा (sahasā) - suddenly; एव (eva) - indeed; अपः (āpaḥ) - the waters; जग्राह (jagrāha) - seized; विषयम् (viṣayam) - the object; ततः (tataḥ) - then;]
(He being struck by the thunderbolt on the earth of great energy, entered suddenly indeed the waters, seized the object then.)
While being struck by the thunderbolt, he of great energy entered the earth, suddenly entered the waters, and then seized the object. (14-11-9)
व्याप्तास्वथाप्सु वृत्रेण रसे च विषये हृते। शतक्रतुरभिक्रुद्धस्तासु वज्रमवासृजत् ॥१४-११-१०॥
vyāptāsu atha apsu vṛtreṇa rase ca viṣaye hṛte | śatakratur abhikruddhaḥ tāsu vajram avāsṛjat ॥14-11-10॥
[व्याप्तासु (vyāptāsu) - having been pervaded; in those (waters); अथ (atha) - then; अप्सु (apsu) - in the waters; वृत्रेण (vṛtreṇa) - by Vṛtra; रसे (rase) - sap; essence; च (ca) - and; विषये (viṣaye) - in the enjoyment; in the object (sense/object of sense); हृते (hṛte) - having been taken away; शतक्रतु: (śatakratuḥ) - Śatakratu; Indra; अभिक्रुद्ध: (abhikruddhaḥ) - greatly enraged; तासु (tāsu) - in those (waters); वज्रम् (vajram) - the thunderbolt; अवासृजत् (avāsṛjat) - he hurled;]
(In those (waters) having been pervaded, then, by Vṛtra, and sap and enjoyment having been taken away, Śatakratu, greatly enraged, in those, hurled the thunderbolt.)
When those waters had been pervaded by Vṛtra, and their sap and enjoyment had been taken away, then Śatakratu (Indra), filled with great rage, hurled the thunderbolt among them. (14-11-10)
स वध्यमानो वज्रेण सलिले भूरितेजसा। विवेश सहसा ज्योतिर्जग्राह विषयं ततः ॥१४-११-११॥
sa vadhyamānaḥ vajreṇa salile bhūritejasā। viveśa sahasā jyotiḥ jagrāha viṣayam tataḥ ॥14-11-11॥
[स (sa) - he; वध्यमानः (vadhyamānaḥ) - being struck; वज्रेण (vajreṇa) - with the thunderbolt; सलिले (salile) - in the water; भूरितेजसा (bhūritejasā) - by one of great brilliance; विवेश (viveśa) - entered; सहसा (sahasā) - suddenly; ज्योतिः (jyotiḥ) - light; जग्राह (jagrāha) - he grasped; विषयम् (viṣayam) - object; ततः (tataḥ) - then;]
(He, being struck by the thunderbolt in the water by one of great brilliance, suddenly entered; the light then grasped the object.)
He, being struck by the thunderbolt in the water by the one of great brilliance, suddenly entered; then the light seized the object. (14-11-11)
व्याप्ते ज्योतिषि वृत्रेण रूपेऽथ विषये हृते। शतक्रतुरभिक्रुद्धस्तत्र वज्रमवासृजत् ॥१४-११-१२॥
vyāpte jyotiṣi vṛtreṇa rūpe'tha viṣaye hṛte। śatakratur abhikruddhas tatra vajram avāsṛjat ॥14-11-12॥
[व्याप्ते (vyāpte) - having been pervaded; ज्योतिषि (jyotiṣi) - in the luminary; वृत्रेण (vṛtreṇa) - by Vṛtra; रूपे (rūpe) - form; अथ (atha) - then; विषये (viṣaye) - in the object; हृते (hṛte) - having been taken away; शतक्रतु: (śatakratuḥ) - Indra; अभिक्रुद्ध: (abhikruddhaḥ) - extremely enraged; तत्र (tatra) - there; वज्रम् (vajram) - the thunderbolt; अवासृजत् (avāsṛjat) - launched;]
(Having been pervaded in the luminary by Vṛtra, form then in the object having been taken away; Indra, extremely enraged, there launched the thunderbolt.)
When the luminary was pervaded by Vṛtra and the form as well as the object had been taken away, then Indra, being extremely enraged, there hurled his thunderbolt. (14-11-12)
स वध्यमानो वज्रेण सुभृशं भूरितेजसा। विवेश सहसा वायुं जग्राह विषयं ततः ॥१४-११-१३॥
sa vadhyamānaḥ vajreṇa subhṛśam bhūritejasā। viveśa sahasā vāyum jagrāha viṣayam tataḥ ॥14-11-13॥
[स (sa) - he; वध्यमानः (vadhyamānaḥ) - being struck; वज्रेण (vajreṇa) - by the thunderbolt; सुभृशं (subhṛśam) - severely; भूरितेजसा (bhūritejasā) - with great brilliance; विवेश (viveśa) - entered; सहसा (sahasā) - suddenly; वायुं (vāyum) - into (the element of) wind; जग्राह (jagrāha) - assumed, took; विषयम् (viṣayam) - the state, condition; ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter;]
(He, being struck by the thunderbolt severely with great brilliance, suddenly entered (the element of) wind, thereafter assumed the state (of wind).)
While being struck severely by the thunderbolt with immense brilliance, he suddenly entered the wind and thereafter assumed its form. (14-11-13)
व्याप्ते वायौ तु वृत्रेण स्पर्शेऽथ विषये हृते। शतक्रतुरभिक्रुद्धस्तत्र वज्रमवासृजत् ॥१४-११-१४॥
vyāpte vāyau tu vṛtreṇa sparśe'tha viṣaye hṛte| śatakraturabhikruddhastatra vajramavāsṛjat ॥14-11-14॥
[व्याप्ते (vyāpte) - having been pervaded; वायौ (vāyau) - in the wind; तु (tu) - but; वृत्रेण (vṛtreṇa) - by Vṛtra; स्पर्शे (sparśe) - touch; अथ (atha) - then; विषये (viṣaye) - domain; हृते (hṛte) - having been taken away; शतक्रतु (śatakratuḥ) - Indra (having a hundred sacrifices); अभिक्रुद्धः (abhikruddhaḥ) - very angry; तत्र (tatra) - there; वज्रम् (vajram) - (the) thunderbolt; अवासृजत् (avāsṛjat) - let loose;]
(When the wind had been pervaded by Vṛtra and, then, when touch and domain had been taken away, Indra, very angry there, let loose the thunderbolt.)
But when Vṛtra had pervaded the wind and taken away touch and domain, Indra, enraged, there let loose his thunderbolt. (14-11-14)
स वध्यमानो वज्रेण तस्मिन्नमिततेजसा। आकाशमभिदुद्राव जग्राह विषयं ततः ॥१४-११-१५॥
sa vadhyamānaḥ vajreṇa tasmin amitatejasā ākāśam abhidudrāva jagrāha viṣayam tataḥ ॥14-11-15॥
[स (sa) - he; वध्यमानः (vadhyamānaḥ) - being struck; वज्रेण (vajreṇa) - with the thunderbolt; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - by him; अमिततेजसा (amitatejasā) - of immeasurable splendor; आकाशम् (ākāśam) - the sky; अभिदुद्राव (abhidudrāva) - he rushed towards; जग्राह (jagrāha) - he seized; विषयम् (viṣayam) - a region/domain; ततः (tataḥ) - then;]
(He, being struck with the thunderbolt by the one of immeasurable splendor, towards the sky rushed; then he seized a region.)
He, being struck by the thunderbolt from him of immeasurable splendor, rushed toward the sky and then seized a region. (14-11-15)
आकाशे वृत्रभूते च शब्दे च विषये हृते। शतक्रतुरभिक्रुद्धस्तत्र वज्रमवासृजत् ॥१४-११-१६॥
ākāśe vṛtrabhūte ca śabde ca viṣaye hṛte। śatakratur abhikruddhas tatra vajram avāsṛjat ॥14-11-16॥
[आकाशे (ākāśe) - in the sky; वृत्रभूते (vṛtrabhūte) - having become Vṛtra; च (ca) - and; शब्दे (śabde) - in sound; च (ca) - and; विषये (viṣaye) - in the object; हृते (hṛte) - having been taken away; शतक्रतु: (śatakratuḥ) - Śatakratu (epithet for Indra); अभिक्रुद्ध: (abhikruddhaḥ) - greatly enraged; तत्र (tatra) - there; वज्रम् (vajram) - the thunderbolt; अवासृजत् (avāsṛjat) - hurled;]
(In the sky, having become Vṛtra, and in sound, and in the object having been taken away, Śatakratu, greatly enraged, there the thunderbolt hurled.)
In the sky, when Vṛtra had become one with sound and the object had been taken away, the greatly enraged Śatakratu (Indra) thereupon hurled his thunderbolt. (14-11-16)
स वध्यमानो वज्रेण तस्मिन्नमिततेजसा। विवेश सहसा शक्रं जग्राह विषयं ततः ॥१४-११-१७॥
sa vadhyamānaḥ vajreṇa tasmin amitatejasā। viveśa sahasā śakraṃ jagrāha viṣayaṃ tataḥ ॥14-11-17॥
[स (sa) - he; वध्यमानः (vadhyamānaḥ) - being struck; (vadh – to kill, passive participle); वज्रेण (vajreṇa) - by the thunderbolt; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - by him; (locative of tat, referring to the wielder); अमिततेजसा (amitatejasā) - of immeasurable splendor; (amitatejas, instrumental); विवेश (viveśa) - entered; सहसा (sahasā) - suddenly; शक्रं (śakram) - Śakra; (Indra); जग्राह (jagrāha) - seized; (from grah – to seize); विषयम् (viṣayam) - domain; sphere; ततः (tataḥ) - then; from there;]

While being struck with the thunderbolt by that one of immeasurable splendor, he suddenly entered (into) Śakra and then seized his domain. (14-11-17)
तस्य वृत्रगृहीतस्य मोहः समभवन्महान्। रथन्तरेण तं तात वसिष्ठः प्रत्यबोधयत् ॥१४-११-१८॥
tasya vṛtragṛhītasya mohaḥ samabhavan mahān। rathantareṇa taṃ tāta vasiṣṭhaḥ pratyabodhayat ॥14-11-18॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; वृत्रगृहीतस्य (vṛtragṛhītasya) - seized by Vṛtra; मोहः (mohaḥ) - delusion; समभवन् (samabhavan) - arose; महान् (mahān) - great; रथन्तरेण (rathantareṇa) - by Rathantara; तम् (tam) - him; तात (tāta) - O dear one; वसिष्ठः (vasiṣṭhaḥ) - Vasiṣṭha; प्रत्यबोधयत् (pratyabodhayat) - awakened;]
(Of him, seized by Vṛtra, great delusion arose. By Rathantara, him, O dear one, Vasiṣṭha awakened.)
When great delusion arose in him, having been seized by Vṛtra, Vasiṣṭha, O dear one, awakened him through Rathantara. (14-11-18)
ततो वृत्रं शरीरस्थं जघान भरतर्षभ। शतक्रतुरदृश्येन वज्रेणेतीह नः श्रुतम् ॥१४-११-१९॥
tato vṛtraṃ śarīrasthaṃ jaghāna bharatarṣabha। śatakraturadṛśyena vajreṇetīha naḥ śrutam ॥14-11-19॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; वृत्रम् (vṛtram) - Vṛtra (the demon); शरीरस्थम् (śarīrastham) - abiding in (his) body; जघान (jaghāna) - he struck (killed); भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of the Bharatas; शतक्रतु (śatakratuḥ) - Śatakratu (Indra); अदृश्येन (adṛśyena) - unseen; वज्रेण (vajreṇa) - with thunderbolt; इति (iti) - thus; इह (iha) - here; नः (naḥ) - by us; श्रुतम् (śrutam) - (it is) heard;]
(Then Vṛtra abiding in (his) body he struck, O best of the Bharatas. Śatakratu (Indra), with an unseen thunderbolt, thus here by us (it is) heard.)
Then, O best of the Bharatas, Śatakratu (Indra) struck Vṛtra, who was abiding in his body, with an unseen thunderbolt; thus we have heard here. (14-11-19)
इदं धर्मरहस्यं च शक्रेणोक्तं महर्षिषु। ऋषिभिश्च मम प्रोक्तं तन्निबोध नराधिप ॥१४-११-२०॥
idaṃ dharma-rahasyaṃ ca śakreṇoktaṃ maharṣiṣu। ṛṣibhiś ca mama proktaṃ tan nibodha narādhipa ॥14-11-20॥
[इदं (idaṃ) - this; धर्मरहस्यं (dharma-rahasyaṃ) - the secret of dharma; च (ca) - and; शक्रेणोक्तं (śakreṇa uktam) - by Śakra (Indra) spoken; महर्षिषु (maharṣiṣu) - among the great sages; ऋषिभि (ṛṣibhiḥ) - by sages; च (ca) - and; मम (mama) - by me; प्रोक्तं (proktam) - spoken; तत् (tat) - that; निबोध (nibodha) - understand; नराधिप (narādhipa) - O king;]
(This dharma secret and (which is) spoken by Śakra among the great sages, and also by the sages spoken by me, that understand, O king.)
O king, understand this dharma secret, which was spoken by Śakra among great sages, and also declared by me and the sages. (14-11-20)
