एवमेतद्ब्रह्मबलं गरीयो; न ब्रह्मतः किञ्चिदन्यद्गरीयः। आविक्षितस्य तु बलं न मृष्ये; वज्रमस्मै प्रहरिष्यामि घोरम् ॥१४-१०-१॥
evam etad brahmabalaṃ garīyaḥ; na brahmataḥ kiñcid anyad garīyaḥ. āvikṣitasya tu balaṃ na mṛṣye; vajram asmai prahariṣyāmi ghoram ॥14-10-1॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; एतत् (etat) - this; ब्रह्मबलम् (brahmabalam) - the power of Brahman; the power derived from sacred knowledge; गरीयः (garīyaḥ) - is greater; न (na) - not; ब्रह्मतः (brahmataḥ) - than (from) Brahman (sacred knowledge); किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; अन्यत् (anyat) - else; other; गरीयः (garīyaḥ) - greater; आविक्षितस्य (āvikṣitasya) - of Āvikṣita; तु (tu) - but; बलम् (balam) - power; न (na) - not; मृष्ये (mṛṣye) - I endure; I tolerate; वज्रम् (vajram) - the thunderbolt; अस्मै (asmai) - against him; to him; प्रहरिष्यामि (prahariṣyāmi) - I shall strike; घोरम् (ghoram) - fiercely; terrible;]
(Thus, this Brahman-power is greater; not than Brahman is anything else greater. Of Āvikṣita, but, power I do not tolerate; the thunderbolt against him I shall strike fiercely.)
Indeed, this power derived from Brahman is the greatest; nothing else is greater than Brahman. But I will not endure the strength of Āvikṣita; I will strike him fiercely with the thunderbolt. (14-10-1)
धृतराष्ट्र प्रहितो गच्छ मरुत्तं; संवर्तेन सहितं तं वदस्व। बृहस्पतिं त्वमुपशिक्षस्व राज; न्वज्रं वा ते प्रहरिष्यामि घोरम् ॥१४-१०-२॥
dhṛtarāṣṭra prahito gaccha maruttaṃ; saṃvartena sahitaṃ taṃ vadasva. bṛhaspatiṃ tvamupaśikṣasva rāja; nvajraṃ vā te prahariṣyāmi ghoram ॥14-10-2॥

Dhritarashtra has sent (you); go to Marutta, speak to him who is with Samvarta. Instruct Brihaspati, O king; otherwise, I shall strike you with a terrible thunderbolt. (14-10-2)

ततो गत्वा धृतराष्ट्रो नरेन्द्रं; प्रोवाचेदं वचनं वासवस्य। गन्धर्वं मां धृतराष्ट्रं निबोध; त्वामागतं वक्तुकामं नरेन्द्र ॥१४-१०-३॥
tato gatvā dhṛtarāṣṭro narendraṃ; provācedaṃ vacanaṃ vāsavasya. gandharvaṃ māṃ dhṛtarāṣṭraṃ nibodha; tvāmāgataṃ vaktukāmaṃ narendra ॥14-10-3॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; धृतराष्ट्रः (dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ) - Dhritarashtra; नरेन्द्रम् (narendram) - the king; प्रोवाच (provāca) - spoke; इदम् (idam) - this; वचनम् (vacanam) - speech; वासवस्य (vāsavasya) - of Vasava (Indra); गन्धर्वम् (gandharvam) - Gandharva; माम् (mām) - me; धृतराष्ट्रम् (dhṛtarāṣṭram) - Dhritarashtra; निबोध (nibodha) - know; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; आगतम् (āgatam) - arrived; वक्तुकामम् (vaktukāmam) - desiring to speak; नरेन्द्र (narendra) - O king;]
(Then, having gone, Dhritarashtra spoke this speech of Vasava to the king: 'Know me as the Gandharva, Dhritarashtra, come to you desiring to speak, O king.' (14-10-3))
Then, having gone, Dhritarashtra spoke this message of Vasava to the king: 'O king, know me as the Gandharva Dhritarashtra, come to you wishing to speak.' (14-10-3)
ऐन्द्रं वाक्यं शृणु मे राजसिंह; यत्प्राह लोकाधिपतिर्महात्मा। बृहस्पतिं याजकं त्वं वृणीष्व; वज्रं वा ते प्रहरिष्यामि घोरम् ॥ वचश्चेदेतन्न करिष्यसे मे; प्राहैतदेतावदचिन्त्यकर्मा ॥१४-१०-४॥
aindraṁ vākyaṁ śṛṇu me rājasiṁha; yat prāha lokādhipatir mahātmā. bṛhaspatiṁ yājakaṁ tvaṁ vṛṇīṣva; vajraṁ vā te prahariṣyāmi ghoram ॥ vacaś ced etan na kariṣyase me; prāha etad etāvad acintyakarmā ॥14-10-4॥

("O lion among kings, hear from me the statement relating to Indra, which the great-souled lord of the world spoke: 'Choose Bṛhaspati as your officiating priest, or I shall hurl the terrible thunderbolt upon you.' If you do not do this word of mine, so much was spoken by him, whose deeds are inconceivable." (14-10-4))
"O lion among kings, listen to the statement relating to Indra that the great lord of the world spoke: 'Select Bṛhaspati as your officiating priest, or I will strike you with the terrible thunderbolt.' If you do not do what I have said, so much was declared by him of inconceivable deeds." (14-10-4)

त्वं चैवैतद्वेत्थ पुरंदरश्च; विश्वेदेवा वसवश्चाश्विनौ च। मित्रद्रोहे निष्कृतिर्वै यथैव; नास्तीति लोकेषु सदैव वादः ॥१४-१०-५॥
tvaṃ caivaitadvettha puraṃdaraśca; viśvedevā vasavaścāśvinau ca. mitradrohe niṣkṛtirvai yathaiva; nāstīti lokeṣu sadaiva vādaḥ ॥14-10-5॥
[त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; एतद् (etad) - this; वेत्थ (vettha) - know; पुरंदरः (puraṃdaraḥ) - Purandara (Indra); च (ca) - and; विश्वेदेवा (viśvedevā) - all-gods (Viśvedevāḥ); वसवः (vasavaḥ) - Vasus; च (ca) - and; अश्विनौ (aśvinau) - Ashvins; च (ca) - and; मित्रद्रोहे (mitradrohe) - in betrayal of friend; निष्कृतिः (niṣkṛtiḥ) - expiation; वै (vai) - indeed; यथा (yathā) - as; एव (eva) - just; न (na) - not; अस्ति (asti) - exists; इति (iti) - thus; लोकेषु (lokeṣu) - in the worlds; सदैव (sadaiva) - always; वादः (vādaḥ) - debate;]
(You and indeed Purandara, and Viśvedevās, and Vasus, and Ashvins also; in betrayal of friend expiation indeed just as not exists thus—in the worlds always (there is) debate.)
You, as well as Purandara, the Viśvedevās, the Vasus, and the Ashvins, all know this; regarding expiation for betrayal of a friend, there is always debate in the world as to whether it truly exists. (14-10-5)
बृहस्पतिर्याजयिता महेन्द्रं; देवश्रेष्ठं वज्रभृतां वरिष्ठम्। संवर्तो मां याजयिताद्य राज; न ते वाक्यं तस्य वा रोचयामि ॥१४-१०-६॥
bṛhaspatiryājayitā mahendraṃ; devaśreṣṭhaṃ vajrabhṛtāṃ variṣṭham। saṃvarto māṃ yājayitādya rājan; na te vākyaṃ tasya vā rocayāmi ॥14-10-6॥
[बृहस्पतिः (bṛhaspatiḥ) - Bṛhaspati; (the preceptor of the gods); याजयिता (yājayitā) - priest who officiated the sacrifice; महेन्द्रम् (mahendram) - Mahendra; (great Indra); देवश्रेष्ठम् (devaśreṣṭham) - best of the gods; वज्रभृताम् (vajrabhṛtām) - of the bearers of the thunderbolt; वरिष्ठम् (variṣṭham) - most eminent; संवर्तः (saṃvartaḥ) - Saṃvarta; (the name of a sage); माम् (mām) - me; याजयिता (yājayitā) - should cause to be sacrificed (should perform the sacrifice through); अद्य (adya) - today; राजन् (rājan) - O king; न (na) - not; ते (te) - your; वाक्यम् (vākyaṃ) - words; तस्य (tasya) - his; वा (vā) - or; रोचयामि (rocayāmi) - I am pleased with;]
(Bṛhaspati (the preceptor of the gods), the sacrificer of Mahendra (the great Indra), the best of the gods, the most eminent of the bearers of the thunderbolt. Saṃvarta should make me perform the sacrifice today, O king; I do not find your statement or his pleasing.)
Bṛhaspati, who performed sacrifices for Mahendra, the best among the gods and foremost among those who bear the thunderbolt. Saṃvarta should make me perform the sacrifice today, O king; I am not pleased with your words or his. (14-10-6)
गन्धर्व उवाच॥

The gandharva said.
घोरो नादः श्रूयते वासवस्य; नभस्तले गर्जतो राजसिंह। व्यक्तं वज्रं मोक्ष्यते ते महेन्द्रः; क्षेमं राजंश्चिन्त्यतामेष कालः ॥१४-१०-७॥
ghoro nādaḥ śrūyate vāsavasya; nabhastale garjato rājasiṁha. vyaktaṁ vajraṁ mokṣyate te mahendraḥ; kṣemaṁ rājan cintyatām eṣa kālaḥ ॥14-10-7॥
[घोरः (ghoraḥ) - terrible; नादः (nādaḥ) - sound; श्रूयते (śrūyate) - is heard; वासवस्य (vāsavasya) - of Vāsava (Indra); नभस्तले (nabhastale) - in the sky; गर्जतः (garjataḥ) - roaring; राजसिंह (rājasiṁha) - O lion among kings; व्यक्तं (vyaktaṁ) - clearly; वज्रं (vajraṁ) - the thunderbolt; मोक्ष्यते (mokṣyate) - is about to be released; ते (te) - by him; महेन्द्रः (mahendraḥ) - Mahendra (great Indra); क्षेमं (kṣemaṁ) - well-being; राजन् (rājan) - O king; चिन्त्यताम् (cintyatām) - should be considered; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; कालः (kālaḥ) - time;]
(Terrible sound is heard of Vāsava; in the sky roaring O lion among kings. Clearly the thunderbolt is about to be released by him Mahendra. Well-being O king should be considered this time. (14-10-7))
A terrible sound of Indra is heard; O lion among kings, he is roaring in the sky. Clearly, Mahendra is about to release his thunderbolt. O king, your safety should be considered at this time. (14-10-7)

इत्येवमुक्तो धृतराष्ट्रेण राजा; श्रुत्वा नादं नदतो वासवस्य। तपोनित्यं धर्मविदां वरिष्ठं; संवर्तं तं ज्ञापयामास कार्यम् ॥१४-१०-८॥
ityevam ukto dhṛtarāṣṭreṇa rājā; śrutvā nādaṁ nadato vāsavasya. tapo-nityaṁ dharmavidāṁ variṣṭhaṁ; samvartaṁ taṁ jñāpayām āsa kāryam ॥14-10-8॥
[इति (iti) - thus; एवम् (evam) - in this manner; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - addressed; धृतराष्ट्रेण (dhṛtarāṣṭreṇa) - by Dhritarashtra; राजा (rājā) - the king; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; नादम् (nādam) - the sound; नदतः (nadataḥ) - of the one roaring; वासवस्य (vāsavasya) - of Vāsava (Indra); तपःनित्यं (tapo-nityam) - always engaged in austerities; धर्मविदां (dharmavidām) - of those who know dharma; वरिष्ठं (variṣṭham) - the foremost; संवर्तम् (samvartam) - Samvarta (proper name); तम् (tam) - him; ज्ञापयामास (jñāpayām āsa) - caused to be informed; कार्यं (kāryam) - the task;]
(Thus, having in this manner been addressed by Dhritarashtra, the king, having heard the sound of Vāsava roaring, (he) who is always engaged in austerities, the foremost among knowers of dharma, (Samvarta), him, caused to be informed of the task.)
Thus, when addressed in this manner by Dhritarashtra, the king, upon hearing the roar of Vāsava, caused the task to be conveyed to Samvarta, who is ever devoted to austerities and the foremost among those who know dharma. (14-10-8)

इममश्मानं प्लवमानमारा; दध्वा दूरं तेन न दृश्यतेऽद्य। प्रपद्येऽहं शर्म विप्रेन्द्र त्वत्तः; प्रयच्छ तस्मादभयं विप्रमुख्य ॥१४-१०-९॥
imam aśmānaṃ plavamānam ārā; dadhvā dūraṃ tena na dṛśyate 'dya। prapadye 'haṃ śarma viprendra tvattaḥ; prayaccha tasmād abhayaṃ vipramukhya ॥14-10-9॥
[इमम् (imam) - this; अश्मानम् (aśmānam) - stone; प्लवमानम् (plavamānam) - floating; आरा (ārā) - having come; दध्वा (dadhvā) - having crossed; दूरम् (dūram) - far; तेन (tena) - by that; न (na) - not; दृश्यते (dṛśyate) - is seen; अद्य (adya) - today; प्रपद्ये (prapadye) - I surrender; अहम् (aham) - I; शर्म (śarma) - refuge; विप्रेन्द्र (viprendra) - O foremost of Brāhmaṇas; त्वत्तः (tvattaḥ) - from you; प्रयच्छ (prayaccha) - grant; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; अभयम् (abhayam) - fearlessness; विप्रमुख्य (vipramukhya) - O chief of Brāhmaṇas;]
(Having come to this floating stone, having crossed far, by that (means) today I am not seen. I surrender (myself) for refuge, O foremost of Brāhmaṇas; therefore, O chief of Brāhmaṇas, grant me fearlessness.)
I have come to this floating stone, having crossed a great distance, and because of that I am not visible today. I seek refuge in you, O foremost of Brāhmaṇas; therefore, O chief of Brāhmaṇas, please grant me safety. (14-10-9)
अयमायाति वै वज्री दिशो विद्योतयन्दश। अमानुषेण घोरेण सदस्यास्त्रासिता हि नः ॥१४-१०-१०॥
ayam āyāti vai vajrī diśo vidyotayand aśa। amānuṣeṇa ghoreṇa sadasyās trāsitā hi naḥ ॥14-10-10॥
[अयम् (ayam) - this one; आयाति (āyāti) - approaches; वै (vai) - indeed; वज्री (vajrī) - the wielder of the thunderbolt; दिशः (diśaḥ) - quarters (of the sky); विद्योतयन् (vidyotayan) - illuminating; दश (daśa) - ten; अमानुषेण (amānuṣeṇa) - non-human; घोरेण (ghoreṇa) - terrible; सदस्याः (sadasyāḥ) - assembly members; त्रासिताः (trāsitāḥ) - frightened; हि (hi) - indeed; नः (naḥ) - of us;]
(This one approaches indeed, the wielder of the thunderbolt, illuminating the ten quarters with (his) non-human terrible (form); indeed, the assembly members of us are frightened.)
Indeed, this wielder of the thunderbolt is approaching, illuminating the ten directions with a terrible, superhuman brilliance; the members of our assembly are truly frightened. (14-10-10)
संवर्त उवाच॥

भयं शक्राद्व्येतु ते राजसिंह; प्रणोत्स्येऽहं भयमेतत्सुघोरम्। संस्तम्भिन्या विद्यया क्षिप्रमेव; मा भैस्त्वमस्माद्भव चापि प्रतीतः ॥१४-१०-११॥
bhayaṃ śakrād vyetu te rājasiṃha; praṇotsye'haṃ bhayam etat sughoram. saṃstambhinyā vidyayā kṣipram eva; mā bhaiḥ tvam asmād bhava cāpi pratītaḥ ॥14-10-11॥
[भयं (bhayam) - fear; शक्रात् (śakrāt) - from Indra; व्येतु (vyetu) - may pass away; ते (te) - your; राजसिंह (rājasiṃha) - O king-lion; O royal lion; प्रणोत्स्येऽहम् (praṇotsye'ham) - I shall drive away; भयम् (bhayam) - fear; एतत् (etat) - this; सुघोरम् (sughoram) - very terrible; संस्तम्भिन्या (saṃstambhinyā) - by restraining; विद्यया (vidyayā) - by knowledge; क्षिप्रम् (kṣipram) - quickly; एव (eva) - indeed; मा (mā) - do not; भैः (bhaiḥ) - fear; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अस्मात् (asmāt) - from this; भव (bhava) - be; चापि (cāpi) - and also; प्रतीतः (pratītaḥ) - confident;]
(Fear from Indra may pass away your, O king-lion; I shall drive away this very terrible fear. By restraining knowledge quickly indeed; do not fear, you from this, be and also confident.)
O king-lion, may your fear of Indra be dispelled; I shall drive away this most terrible fear. By the restraining knowledge, and quickly too, do not be afraid—be confident from this as well. (14-10-11)
अहं संस्तम्भयिष्यामि मा भैस्त्वं शक्रतो नृप। सर्वेषामेव देवानां क्षपितान्यायुधानि मे ॥१४-१०-१२॥
ahaṃ saṃstambhayiṣyāmi mā bhaistvaṃ śakrato nṛpa। sarveṣāmeva devānāṃ kṣapitānyāyudhani me ॥14-10-12॥
[अहं (ahaṃ) - I; संस्तम्भयिष्यामि (saṃstambhayiṣyāmi) - I shall check; मा (mā) - do not; भैः (bhaiḥ) - fear; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; शक्रतः (śakrataḥ) - from Indra; नृप (nṛpa) - O king; सर्वेषामेव (sarveṣāmeva) - of all indeed; देवानाम् (devānām) - of the gods; क्षपितानि (kṣapitāni) - destroyed; आयुधानि (āyudhani) - weapons; मे (me) - by me;]
(I shall check (restrain); do not fear, you, from Indra, O king. Of all indeed of the gods, destroyed weapons by me.)
O king, I shall restrain them; do not be afraid of Indra. I have destroyed the weapons of all the gods. (14-10-12)
दिशो वज्रं व्रजतां वायुरेतु; वर्षं भूत्वा निपततु काननेषु। आपः प्लवन्त्वन्तरिक्षे वृथा च; सौदामिनी दृश्यतां मा बिभस्त्वम् ॥१४-१०-१३॥
diśo vajraṃ vrajatāṃ vāyur etu; varṣaṃ bhūtvā nipatatu kānaneṣu. āpaḥ plavantv antarikṣe vṛthā ca; saudāminī dṛśyatāṃ mā bibhas tvam ॥14-10-13॥

(Let thunderbolt go to the directions, let wind come; having become rain, let it fall in the forests. Let the waters float in the sky and in vain; let lightning be seen, do not be afraid you. (14-10-13))
Let the thunderbolt move through the directions, let the wind arise; let rain descend into the forests. Let the waters float in the sky and idly; let lightning be seen, do not fear. (14-10-13)
अथो वह्निस्त्रातु वा सर्वतस्ते; कामं वर्षं वर्षतु वासवो वा। वज्रं तथा स्थापयतां च वायु; र्महाघोरं प्लवमानं जलौघैः ॥१४-१०-१४॥
atho vahnistrātu vā sarvataste; kāmaṃ varṣaṃ varṣatu vāsavo vā। vajraṃ tathā sthāpayatāṃ ca vāyuḥ; mahāghoraṃ plavamānaṃ jalaughaiḥ ॥14-10-14॥

If you are indeed pleased, O king of the gods, then therefore you yourself direct the arrangements of the sacrifice. You yourself establish all the paths, O lord of the gods; let both this and all the worlds know, O god. (14-10-24)

(Thus, having been addressed indeed by Āṅgirasa, Indra completely instructed himself indeed the gods. Assembly halls let them be made and residences principal, by thousands, wondrous on the earth, prosperous.)
Thus, when Indra had been addressed by Āṅgirasa (Bṛhaspati), he himself ordered the gods: "Let assembly halls and principal residences, wondrous and prosperous, be built in thousands upon the earth." (14-10-25)
कॢप्तस्थूणाः कुरुतारोहणानि; गन्धर्वाणामप्सरसां च शीघ्रम्। येषु नृत्येरन्नप्सरसः सहस्रशः; स्वर्गोद्देशः क्रियतां यज्ञवाटः ॥१४-१०-२६॥

(Thus addressed, they quickly and confidently acted; the dwellers of heaven, from Indra's speech, O king of men. Then Indra, pleased, honoring Marutta, said a word to the king.)

एष त्वयाहमिह राजन्समेत्य; ये चाप्यन्ये तव पूर्वे नरेन्द्राः। सर्वाश्चान्या देवताः प्रीयमाणा; हविस्तुभ्यं प्रतिगृह्णन्तु राजन् ॥१४-१०-२८॥

(This (person), having united with you here, O king; and those other former kings of yours also; and all other deities, being pleased, may accept the offering from you, O king.)
This person, having joined you here, O king, together with the other former kings of your line, and all other deities who are pleased, may accept the oblation from you, O king. (14-10-28)
आग्नेयं वै लोहितमालभन्तां; वैश्वदेवं बहुरूपं विराजन्। नीलं चोक्षाणं मेध्यमभ्यालभन्तां; चलच्छिश्नं मत्प्रदिष्टं द्विजेन्द्राः ॥१४-१०-२९॥
āgneyam vai lohitam ālabhantām; vaiśvadevaṃ bahurūpaṃ virājan. nīlaṃ caukṣāṇaṃ medhyam abhyālabhantām; calacchiśnaṃ matpradiṣṭaṃ dvijendrāḥ ॥14-10-29॥
[आग्नेयं (āgneyam) - belonging to Agni; वै (vai) - indeed; लोहितम् (lohitam) - red; आलभन्तां (ālabhantām) - they should offer; वैश्वदेवम् (vaiśvadevam) - belonging to Viśvedeva-s; बहुरूपम् (bahurūpam) - of many forms; विराजन् (virājan) - shining; नीलम् (nīlam) - dark (blue or black); च (ca) - and; उक्षाणम् (ukṣāṇam) - a bull; मेध्यम् (medhyam) - fit for sacrifice; अभ्यालभन्तां (abhyālabhantām) - they should specially offer; चलच्छिश्नम् (calacchiśnam) - one with moving penis; मत्प्रदिष्टम् (matpradiṣṭam) - prescribed by me; द्विजेन्द्राः (dvijendrāḥ) - O best of twice-borns;]
(Belonging to Agni, indeed, a red (animal) they should offer; to Viśvedeva-s, one of many forms, shining. A dark bull, fit for sacrifice, they should specially offer; one with moving penis, prescribed by me, O best of twice-borns.)
Let them offer a red animal for Agni, and for the Viśvedeva-s, an animal of many forms and radiance. A dark bull that is fit for sacrifice should be specially offered; an animal with a moving penis, as prescribed by me, O best of the twice-born. (14-10-29)

(Then the sacrifice of that king grew; where the gods themselves accepted food offerings. In which Śakra, being worshipped by Brāhmaṇas, as a member of the assembly became, golden-bodied, king of the gods. (14-10-30))

(Then Saṁvarta, great-souled, gone to the altar, just as blazing fire, second, among oblations, aloud invoked assemblies of gods, offered (oblations) into the fire with mantra, fully satisfied.)
Then the great soul Saṁvarta, having gone to the altar, like a second blazing fire, among the oblations, loudly invoked the assemblies of gods and offered them into the fire with the mantras, being fully satisfied. (14-10-31)
ततः पीत्वा बलभित्सोममग्र्यं; ये चाप्यन्ये सोमपा वै दिवौकसः। सर्वेऽनुज्ञाताः प्रययुः पार्थिवेन; यथाजोषं तर्पिताः प्रीतिमन्तः ॥१४-१०-३२॥
tataḥ pītvā balabhit-somam agryaṃ; ye ca apy anye somapā vai divaukasaḥ। sarve-'anujñātāḥ prayayuḥ pārthivena; yathā-joṣam tarpitāḥ prītimantaḥ॥14-10-32॥

(Then, having drunk the excellent Soma, Indra, and also the other Soma-drinkers indeed, the dwellers in heaven, all, having been permitted by the earthly king, departed, having been satisfied, with satisfaction, as they wished.)
Then, having drunk the excellent Soma, Indra and all the other Soma-drinking gods, the heavenly beings, having been permitted by the king, departed as they wished, satisfied and pleased. (14-10-32)
ततो राजा जातरूपस्य राशी; न्पदे पदे कारयामास हृष्टः। द्विजातिभ्यो विसृजन्भूरि वित्तं; रराज वित्तेश इवारिहन्ता ॥१४-१०-३३॥
tato rājā jātarūpasya rāśīn pade pade kārayāmāsa hṛṣṭaḥ| dvijātibhyo visṛjan bhūri vittaṃ rarāja vitteśa ivārihantā ॥14-10-33॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; राजा (rājā) - the king; जातरूपस्य (jātarūpasya) - of gold; राशीन् (rāśīn) - heaps; पदे पदे (pade pade) - at every step; कारयामास (kārayāmāsa) - caused to be made; हृष्टः (hṛṣṭaḥ) - joyful; द्विजातिभ्यः (dvijātibhyaḥ) - to the twice-born; विसृजन् (visṛjan) - giving; भूरि (bhūri) - much; वित्तम् (vittam) - wealth; रराज (rarāja) - shone; वित्तेश (vitteśa) - the lord of wealth (Kubera); इव (iva) - like; अरिहन्ता (arihantā) - destroyer of enemies;]
(Then the king, joyful, caused heaps of gold to be made at every step; giving much wealth to the twice-born, he shone like Kubera, the destroyer of enemies.)
Joyfully, the king had heaps of gold made at every step; distributing abundant wealth to the twice-born, he shone like Kubera, the destroyer of foes. (14-10-33)
ततो वित्तं विविधं संनिधाय; यथोत्साहं कारयित्वा च कोशम्। अनुज्ञातो गुरुणा संनिवृत्य; शशास गामखिलां सागरान्ताम् ॥१४-१०-३४॥
tato vittaṃ vividhaṃ saṃnidhāya; yathotsāhaṃ kārayitvā ca kośam. anujñāto guruṇā saṃnivṛtya; śaśāsa gāmakhilāṃ sāgarāntām ॥14-10-34॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; वित्तं (vittaṃ) - wealth; विविधं (vividhaṃ) - various; संनिधाय (saṃnidhāya) - having collected; यथोत्साहं (yathotsāham) - according to ability; कारयित्वा (kārayitvā) - having had (it) made; च (ca) - and; कोशम् (kośam) - treasury; अनुज्ञातः (anujñātaḥ) - permitted; गुरुणा (guruṇā) - by the elder; संनिवृत्य (saṃnivṛtya) - having returned; शशास (śaśāsa) - he ruled; गाम् (gām) - the earth; अखिलां (akhilāṃ) - entire; सागर-अन्ताम् (sāgara-antām) - bounded by ocean;]
(Then, having collected various kinds of wealth; and, having prepared the treasury according to (his) ability; permitted by the elder, having returned; he ruled the entire earth bounded by the ocean.)
Then, having assembled various kinds of wealth and arranged the treasury as he was able, permitted by his elder and having returned, he ruled over the entire earth bounded by the ocean. (14-10-34)
एवङ्गुणः सम्बभूवेह राजा; यस्य क्रतौ तत्सुवर्णं प्रभूतम्। तत्त्वं समादाय नरेन्द्र वित्तं; यजस्व देवांस्तर्पयानो विधानैः ॥१४-१०-३५॥
evaṅ-guṇaḥ sambabhūva iha rājā; yasya kratau tat suvarṇam prabhūtam। tattvam samādāya narendra vittam; yajasva devān tarpayānaḥ vidhānaiḥ ॥14-10-35॥
[एवङ्गुणः (evaṅ-guṇaḥ) - thus-qualified; सम्बभूव (sambabhūva) - was born; इह (iha) - here; राजा (rājā) - king; यस्स्य (yasya) - whose; क्रतौ (kratau) - in the sacrifice; तत् (tat) - that; सुवर्णम् (suvarṇam) - gold; प्रभूतम् (prabhūtam) - abundant; तत्त्वम् (tattvam) - that; समादाय (samādāya) - having taken; नरेन्द्र (narendra) - O king; वित्तम् (vittam) - wealth; यजस्व (yajasva) - sacrifice; देवान् (devān) - gods; तर्पयानः (tarpayānaḥ) - satisfying; विधानैः (vidhānaiḥ) - by rites;]
(Thus-qualified was born here a king; in whose sacrifice that gold (was) abundant. That having taken, O king, wealth; sacrifice to the gods, satisfying (them) by rites.)
Here, a king thus-endowed was born, in whose sacrifice there was abundant gold. Taking that wealth, O king, perform sacrifice to the gods, satisfying them with proper rites. (14-10-35)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

ततो राजा पाण्डवो हृष्टरूपः; श्रुत्वा वाक्यं सत्यवत्याः सुतस्य। मनश्चक्रे तेन वित्तेन यष्टुं; ततोऽमात्यैर्मन्त्रयामास भूयः ॥१४-१०-३६॥
tato rājā pāṇḍavo hṛṣṭarūpaḥ; śrutvā vākyaṁ satyavatyāḥ sutasya. manaścakre tena vittena yaṣṭuṁ; tato’mātyair mantrayāmāsa bhūyaḥ ॥14-10-36॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; राजा (rājā) - king; पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - Pāṇḍava (descendant of Pāṇḍu; often referring to Yudhiṣṭhira); हृष्टरूपः (hṛṣṭarūpaḥ) - glad in appearance; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; वाक्यम् (vākyaṁ) - speech; सत्यवत्याः (satyavatyāḥ) - of Satyavatī; सुतस्य (sutasya) - of the son; मनःचक्रे (manaścakre) - resolved in his mind; तेन (tena) - with that; वित्तेन (vittena) - wealth; यष्टुम् (yaṣṭum) - to perform sacrifice; ततः (tataḥ) - then; अमात्यैः (amātyaiḥ) - with ministers; मन्त्रयामास (mantrayāmāsa) - deliberated; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - again;]
(Then the king Pāṇḍava, glad in appearance, having heard the speech of Satyavatī's son, resolved in his mind to perform sacrifice with that wealth. Then with ministers he deliberated again.)
Then King Yudhiṣṭhira of the Pāṇḍavas, gladdened by hearing the words of Satyavatī's son, resolved to perform a sacrifice with that wealth. Then he once again consulted with his ministers. (14-10-36)
