Vasudeva said.
न बाह्यं द्रव्यमुत्सृज्य सिद्धिर्भवति भारत। शारीरं द्रव्यमुत्सृज्य सिद्धिर्भवति वा न वा ॥१४-१३-१॥
na bāhyaṃ dravyam utsṛjya siddhir bhavati bhārata. śārīraṃ dravyam utsṛjya siddhir bhavati vā na vā ॥14-13-1॥
[न (na) - not; बाह्यं (bāhyam) - external; द्रव्यं (dravyam) - substance; उत्सृज्य (utsṛjya) - having abandoned; सिद्धिः (siddhiḥ) - perfection; भवति (bhavati) - is; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; शारीरं (śārīram) - bodily; द्रव्यं (dravyam) - substance; उत्सृज्य (utsṛjya) - having abandoned; सिद्धिः (siddhiḥ) - perfection; भवति (bhavati) - is; वा (vā) - or; न (na) - not; वा (vā) - or;]
(Not external substance having abandoned, perfection is, O Bhārata. Bodily substance having abandoned, perfection is or not or. (14-13-1))
O Bhārata, perfection does not come by abandoning external substances. By abandoning bodily substance, does perfection arise or not? (14-13-1)
बाह्यद्रव्यविमुक्तस्य शारीरेषु च गृध्यतः। यो धर्मो यत्सुखं चैव द्विषतामस्तु तत्तथा ॥१४-१३-२॥
bāhyadravyavimuktasya śārīreṣu ca gṛdhyataḥ। yo dharmo yat sukhaṃ caiva dviṣatām astu tat tathā॥14-13-2॥
[बाह्यद्रव्यविमुक्तस्य (bāhyadravyavimuktasya) - of one freed from external objects; शारीरेषु (śārīreṣu) - in bodily (matters); च (ca) - and; गृध्यतः (gṛdhyataḥ) - of one who desires; यः (yaḥ) - whatever; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - dharma; यत् (yat) - whatever; सुखं (sukhaṃ) - happiness; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; द्विषताम् (dviṣatām) - to the enemies; अस्तु (astu) - let it be; तत् (tat) - that; तथा (tathā) - thus;]
(Of one freed from external objects, and in bodily (matters), of one who desires, whatever dharma, whatever happiness, and indeed, let that be for the enemies thus.)
Let whatever dharma or happiness pertains to the one freed from external objects but still desirous in bodily affairs, let that be for the enemies, thus. (14-13-2)
द्व्यक्षरस्तु भवेन्मृत्युस्त्र्यक्षरं ब्रह्म शाश्वतम्। ममेति द्व्यक्षरो मृत्युर्न ममेति च शाश्वतम् ॥१४-१३-३॥
dvy-akṣaras tu bhaven mṛtyus try-akṣaraṁ brahma śāśvatam। mameti dvy-akṣaro mṛtyur na mameti ca śāśvatam ॥14-13-3॥
[द्व्यक्षरः (dvy-akṣaraḥ) - the two-syllabled (word); तु (tu) - but; however; भवेत् (bhavet) - becomes; is; मृत्युः (mṛtyuḥ) - death; त्र्यक्षरम् (try-akṣaram) - the three-syllabled (word); ब्रह्म (brahma) - Brahman; the Absolute; शाश्वतम् (śāśvatam) - eternal; मम (mama) - mine; इति (iti) - thus; 'so'; द्व्यक्षरः (dvy-akṣaraḥ) - the two-syllabled (word); मृत्युः (mṛtyuḥ) - death; न (na) - not; मम (mama) - mine; इति (iti) - thus; 'so'; च (ca) - and; शाश्वतम् (śāśvatam) - eternal;]
(But the two-syllabled (word) is death, the three-syllabled (word) is Brahman eternal. "Mine"—the two-syllabled word—is death; "not mine"—the three-syllabled word—is eternal.)
The word "mine" (mama) leads to death, but the word "not mine" (na mama) signifies the eternal Brahman. (14-13-3)
ब्रह्म मृत्युश्च तौ राजन्नात्मन्येव व्यवस्थितौ। अदृश्यमानौ भूतानि योधयेतामसंशयम् ॥१४-१३-४॥
brahma mṛtyuś ca tau rājan ātmani eva vyavasthitau। adṛśyamānau bhūtāni yodhayetām asaṃśayam॥14-13-4॥
[ब्रह्म (brahma) - Brahman; मृत्युः (mṛtyuḥ) - death; च (ca) - and; तौ (tau) - those two; राजन् (rājan) - O king; आत्मनि एव (ātmani eva) - in the self only; व्यवस्थितौ (vyavasthitau) - are established; अदृश्यमानौ (adṛśyamānau) - not being seen; भूतानि (bhūtāni) - beings; योधयेताम् (yodhayetām) - cause to fight; असंशयम् (asaṃśayam) - without doubt;]
(Brahman and death, those two, O king, are established in the self only; not being seen, (they) cause beings to fight, without doubt.)
O king, both Brahman and death are present within the self alone; unseen, they surely cause beings to contend.
अविनाशोऽस्य सत्त्वस्य नियतो यदि भारत। भित्त्वा शरीरं भूतानामहिंसां प्रतिपद्यते ॥१४-१३-५॥
avinaśo'sya sattvasya niyato yadi bhārata। bhittvā śarīraṃ bhūtānām ahiṃsāṃ pratipadyate ॥14-13-5॥
[अविनाशः (avinaśaḥ) - indestructible; अस्य (asya) - of this; सत्त्वस्य (sattvasya) - of the being; नियतः (niyataḥ) - certain; यदि (yadi) - if; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; भित्त्वा (bhittvā) - having pierced; शरीरम् (śarīram) - body; भूतानाम् (bhūtānām) - of beings; अहिंसाम् (ahiṃsām) - non-injury; प्रतिपद्यते (pratipadyate) - attains;]
(Indestructible of this being is certain, if O Bhārata. Having pierced the body of beings, non-injury is attained.)
O Bhārata, if it is certain that the being of this is indestructible, then even after piercing the bodies of beings, one attains non-injury. (14-13-5)
लब्ध्वापि पृथिवीं सर्वां सहस्थावरजङ्गमाम्। ममत्वं यस्य नैव स्यात्किं तया स करिष्यति ॥१४-१३-६॥
labdhvāpi pṛthivīṃ sarvāṃ sahasthāvarajaṅgamām। mamatvaṃ yasya naiva syāt kiṃ tayā sa kariṣyati॥14-13-6॥
[लब्ध्वा अपि (labdhvā api) - having obtained; even; पृथिवीं सर्वां (pṛthivīṃ sarvāṃ) - the whole earth; सह स्थावर जङ्गमाम् (saha sthāvara-jaṅgamām) - together with the immovable and movable (beings); ममत्वं (mamatvam) - possessiveness; यस्य (yasya) - of whom; न एव (na eva) - not at all; स्यात् (syāt) - would be; किं (kiṃ) - what; तया (tayā) - with that; सः (saḥ) - he; करिष्यति (kariṣyati) - would do;]
(Even having obtained the whole earth together with the immovable and movable (beings), of whom possessiveness would not at all be, what with that he would do?)
Even if one obtains the entire earth with all its immovable and movable creatures, what would he do with it if he feels no sense of possessiveness? (14-13-6)
अथ वा वसतः पार्थ वने वन्येन जीवतः। ममता यस्य द्रव्येषु मृत्योरास्ये स वर्तते ॥१४-१३-७॥
atha vā vasataḥ pārtha vane vanyena jīvataḥ। mamatā yasya dravyeṣu mṛtyorāsye sa vartate॥14-13-7॥
[अथ (atha) - now; then; वा (vā) - or; वसतः (vasataḥ) - dwelling; living; पार्थ (pārtha) - O Pārtha; वने (vane) - in the forest; वन्येन (vanyena) - with (by means of) forest produce; जीवतः (jīvataḥ) - living; sustaining oneself; ममता (mamatā) - attachment; possessiveness; यस्य (yasya) - whose; द्रव्येषु (dravyeṣu) - in objects; in possessions; मृत्योर् (mṛtyor) - of death; आस्ये (āsye) - in the mouth; स (sa) - he; वर्तते (vartate) - dwells; exists;]
(Now or dwelling, O Pārtha, in the forest, living by forest produce, whose attachment in objects, in the mouth of death, he dwells.)
But even one dwelling in the forest, O Pārtha, living on forest produce—if he has attachment to possessions, he abides in the very mouth of death. (14-13-7)
बाह्यान्तराणां शत्रूणां स्वभावं पश्य भारत। यन्न पश्यति तद्भूतं मुच्यते स महाभयात् ॥१४-१३-८॥
bāhyāntarāṇāṃ śatrūṇāṃ svabhāvaṃ paśya bhārata। yan na paśyati tadbhūtaṃ mucyate sa mahābhayāt ॥14-13-8॥
[बाह्यान्तराणां (bāhyāntarāṇāṃ) - of external and internal; (ones) शत्रूणां (śatrūṇāṃ) - of enemies; स्वभावं (svabhāvaṃ) - nature; पश्य (paśya) - see; observe; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; यत् (yat) - which; न (na) - not; पश्यति (paśyati) - (one) sees; तद्भूतं (tadbhūtaṃ) - that having become; मुच्यते (mucyate) - is freed; is released; स (sa) - he; महाभयात् (mahābhayāt) - from great fear;]
(Of external and internal enemies nature see O Bhārata. Which not sees that having become is freed he from great fear.)
O Bhārata, observe the nature of external and internal enemies. He who recognizes that which is not seen is freed from great fear. (14-13-8)
कामात्मानं न प्रशंसन्ति लोके; न चाकामात्काचिदस्ति प्रवृत्तिः। दानं हि वेदाध्ययनं तपश्च; कामेन कर्माणि च वैदिकानि ॥१४-१३-९॥
kāmātmānaṃ na praśaṃsanti loke; na cākāmātkācidasti pravṛttiḥ. dānaṃ hi vedādhyayanaṃ tapaśca; kāmena karmāṇi ca vaidikāni ||14-13-9||
[कामात्मानं (kāmātmānam) - one whose self is desire; न (na) - not; प्रशंसन्ति (praśaṃsanti) - they praise; लोके (loke) - in the world; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अकामात् (akāmāt) - from non-desire; काचित् (kācit) - any; अस्ति (asti) - there is; प्रवृत्तिः (pravṛttiḥ) - activity; दानं (dānam) - giving (charity); हि (hi) - indeed; वेदाध्ययनं (vedādhyayanam) - study of the Veda; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; च (ca) - and; कामेन (kāmena) - by desire; कर्माणि (karmāṇi) - acts; च (ca) - and; वैदिकानि (vaidikāni) - Vedic;]
(One whose self is desire, not they praise in the world; and from non-desire, any activity is not there. Giving, indeed, Veda study, and austerity; by desire, and acts Vedic.)
In the world, a person whose self is desire is not praised; yet, there is no activity at all without desire. Indeed, giving, study of the Vedas, and austerity, and even Vedic actions, are performed because of desire. (14-13-9)
व्रतं यज्ञान्नियमान्ध्यानयोगा; न्कामेन यो नारभते विदित्वा। यद्यद्ध्ययं कामयते स धर्मो; न यो धर्मो नियमस्तस्य मूलम् ॥१४-१३-१०॥
vrataṃ yajñān niyamān dhyāna-yogān; kāmena yo nārabhate viditvā. yadyad dhyam āyam kāmayate sa dharmo; na yo dharmo niyamas tasya mūlam ॥14-13-10॥
[व्रतम् (vratam) - vow; यज्ञान् (yajñān) - sacrifices; नियमान् (niyamān) - restraints; ध्यान-योगान् (dhyāna-yogān) - meditation practices; कामेन (kāmena) - with desire; यः (yaḥ) - who; न (na) - not; आरभते (ārabhate) - undertakes; विदित्वा (viditvā) - having known; यद्यत् (yadyat) - whatever; ध्यम् (dhyam) - object, pursuit; आयम् (āyam) - desire; aim; कामयते (kāmayate) - desires; सः (saḥ) - that; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - is righteousness; न (na) - not; यः (yaḥ) - which; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - righteousness; नियमः (niyamaḥ) - rule; तस्य (tasya) - of that; मूलम् (mūlam) - root;]
(Vow, sacrifices, restraints, meditation-practices; with desire, who does not undertake, having known. Whatever object, aim, he desires, that is righteousness; not which righteousness, rule of that is root. (14-13-10))
One who, having known, does not undertake vows, sacrifices, restraints, or meditation practices from desire—whatever object or aim he desires, that is righteousness; not that which is mere rule is its root. (14-13-10)
अत्र गाथाः कामगीताः कीर्तयन्ति पुराविदः। शृणु सङ्कीर्त्यमानास्ता निखिलेन युधिष्ठिर ॥१४-१३-११॥
atra gāthāḥ kāmagītāḥ kīrtayanti purāvidaḥ। śṛṇu saṅkīrtyamānās tā nikhilena yudhiṣṭhira ॥14-13-11॥
[अत्र (atra) - here; गाथाः (gāthāḥ) - verses; कामगीताः (kāmagītāḥ) - songs of desire; कीर्तयन्ति (kīrtayanti) - they recite; पुराविदः (purāvidaḥ) - knowers of ancient times; शृणु (śṛṇu) - listen; सङ्कीर्त्यमानाः (saṅkīrtyamānāḥ) - being recited together; ता (tā) - those; निखिलेन (nikhilena) - entirely; युधिष्ठिर (yudhiṣṭhira) - Yudhiṣṭhira;]

नाहं शक्योऽनुपायेन हन्तुं भूतेन केनचित्। यो मां प्रयतते हन्तुं ज्ञात्वा प्रहरणे बलम् ॥ तस्य तस्मिन्प्रहरणे पुनः प्रादुर्भवाम्यहम् ॥१४-१३-१२॥
nāhaṃ śakyo'nupāyena hantuṃ bhūtena kenacit। yo māṃ prayatate hantuṃ jñātvā praharaṇe balam ॥ tasya tasmin praharaṇe punaḥ prādurbhavāmyaham ॥14-13-12॥
[न (na) - not; अहम् (aham) - I; शक्यः (śakyaḥ) - capable (to be able); अनुपायेन (anupāyena) - without a means; हन्तुम् (hantum) - to kill; भूतेन (bhūtena) - by a being; केनचित् (kenacit) - by anyone; यः (yaḥ) - who; माम् (mām) - me; प्रयतते (prayatate) - tries; endeavours; हन्तुम् (hantum) - to kill; ज्ञात्वा (jñātvā) - having known; प्रहरणे (praharaṇe) - about the weapon; बलम् (balam) - the strength; तस्य (tasya) - of that person; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; प्रहरणे (praharaṇe) - weapon; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; प्रादुर्भवामि (prādurbhavāmi) - I appear; अहम् (aham) - I;]
(Not I am able without a means to be killed by a being by anyone. Who me tries to kill, having known in the weapon the strength, of that in that weapon again I appear I.)
I cannot be killed by anyone, by any being, without the proper means. Whoever tries to kill me, knowing the strength of the weapon, in that very weapon, to him I manifest again. (14-13-12)
यो मां प्रयतते हन्तुं यज्ञैर्विविधदक्षिणैः। जङ्गमेष्विव कर्मात्मा पुनः प्रादुर्भवाम्यहम् ॥१४-१३-१३॥
yo māṃ prayatate hantuṃ yajñair vividha-dakṣiṇaiḥ। jaṅgameṣv iva karmātmā punaḥ prādurbhavāmy aham ॥14-13-13॥
[यो (yaḥ) - who; मां (mām) - me; प्रयतते (prayatate) - strives; हन्तुम् (hantum) - to destroy; यज्ञैः (yajñaiḥ) - with sacrifices; विविधदक्षिणैः (vividha-dakṣiṇaiḥ) - with various gifts; जङ्गमेषु (jaṅgameṣu) - among the moving beings; इव (iva) - like; कर्मात्मा (karmātmā) - the one identified with action; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; प्रादुर्भवामि (prādurbhavāmi) - I manifest; अहम् (aham) - I;]
(Who strives to destroy me with sacrifices and various gifts, among the moving beings, like the one identified with action, again I manifest, I.)
Whoever strives to destroy me with sacrifices and various offerings, among moving beings—like one whose essential nature is action—I manifest myself again. (14-13-13)
यो मां प्रयतते हन्तुं वेदैर्वेदान्तसाधनैः। स्थावरेष्विव शान्तात्मा तस्य प्रादुर्भवाम्यहम् ॥१४-१३-१४॥
yo māṃ prayatate hantuṃ vedairvedāntasādhanaiḥ। sthāvareṣviva śāntātmā tasya prādurbhavāmyaham ॥14-13-14॥
[यो (yaḥ) - who; मां (māṃ) - me; प्रयतते (prayatate) - strives; हन्तुं (hantuṃ) - to kill; वेदैः (vedaiḥ) - by the Vedas; वेदान्तसाधनैः (vedāntasādhanaiḥ) - by the means (sādhanas) of Vedānta; स्थावरेषु (sthāvareṣu) - among the immobile (things); इव (iva) - like; शान्तात्मा (śāntātmā) - with tranquil self; तस्य (tasya) - to him; प्रादुर्भवामि (prādurbhavāmi) - I appear; अहम् (aham) - I;]
(Who me strives to kill by the Vedas and by the means of Vedānta, among the immobile like, with tranquil self, to him I appear, I.)
Whoever strives to destroy me using the Vedas and means of the Vedānta, being tranquil like the immobile, to him I manifest myself. (14-13-14)
यो मां प्रयतते हन्तुं धृत्या सत्यपराक्रमः। भावो भवामि तस्याहं स च मां नावबुध्यते ॥१४-१३-१५॥
yo māṃ prayatate hantuṃ dhṛtyā satyaparākramaḥ। bhāvo bhavāmi tasyāhaṃ sa ca māṃ nāvabudhyate॥14-13-15॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; माम् (mām) - me; प्रयतते (prayatate) - attempts; हन्तुम् (hantum) - to slay; धृत्या (dhṛtyā) - with firmness; सत्यपराक्रमः (satyaparākramaḥ) - possessing true valor; भावः (bhāvaḥ) - the disposition; भवामि (bhavāmi) - I become; तस्य (tasya) - his; अहम् (aham) - I; सः (saḥ) - he; च (ca) - and; माम् (mām) - me; न (na) - not; अवबुध्यते (avabudhyate) - perceives;]
(Who with firmness and true valor attempts to slay me, I become his disposition. He and I, he does not perceive me.)
He who, with firmness and true valor, attempts to slay me—I become his very disposition. He does not recognize me, nor does he perceive me. (14-13-15)
यो मां प्रयतते हन्तुं तपसा संशितव्रतः। ततस्तपसि तस्याथ पुनः प्रादुर्भवाम्यहम् ॥१४-१३-१६॥
yo māṃ prayatate hantuṃ tapasā saṃśitavrataḥ। tataḥ tapasi tasyātha punaḥ prādurbhavāmyaham॥14-13-16॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; माम् (mām) - me; प्रयतते (prayatate) - strives; हन्तुम् (hantum) - to kill; तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; संशितव्रतः (saṃśitavrataḥ) - firm in vow; ततः (tataḥ) - then; तपसि (tapasi) - in austerity; तस्य (tasya) - of him; अथ (atha) - then; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; प्रादुर्भवामि (prādurbhavāmi) - I appear; अहम् (aham) - I;]
(Who me strives to kill by austerity, firm in vow; then in austerity of him then again I appear I.)
Whoever, firm in vow, strives to kill me through austerity, then I again appear before him in his austerity. (14-13-16)
यो मां प्रयतते हन्तुं मोक्षमास्थाय पण्डितः। तस्य मोक्षरतिस्थस्य नृत्यामि च हसामि च ॥ अवध्यः सर्वभूतानामहमेकः सनातनः ॥१४-१३-१७॥
yo māṃ prayatate hantuṃ mokṣam-āsthāya paṇḍitaḥ। tasya mokṣa-rati-sthasya nṛtyāmi ca hasāmi ca॥ avadhyaḥ sarva-bhūtānām aham ekaḥ sanātanaḥ॥14-13-17॥
[यो (yo) (yo) - he who; मां (māṃ) (māṃ) - me; प्रयतते (prayatate) (prayatate) - strives; हन्तुं (hantuṃ) (hantuṃ) - to kill; मोक्षम् (mokṣam) (mokṣam) - liberation; आस्थाय (āsthāya) (āsthāya) - taking refuge in; पण्डितः (paṇḍitaḥ) (paṇḍitaḥ) - wise man; तस्य (tasya) (tasya) - of him; मोक्षरति-स्थस्य (mokṣa-rati-sthasya) (mokṣa-rati-sthasya) - who abides in delight in liberation; नृत्यामि (nṛtyāmi) (nṛtyāmi) - I dance; च (ca) (ca) - and; हसामि (hasāmi) (hasāmi) - I laugh; च (ca) (ca) - and; अवध्यः (avadhyaḥ) (avadhyaḥ) - not to be slain; सर्वभूतानाम् (sarva-bhūtānām) (sarva-bhūtānām) - of all beings; अहम् (aham) (aham) - I; एकः (ekaḥ) (ekaḥ) - alone; सनातनः (sanātanaḥ) (sanātanaḥ) - eternal;]
(He who strives to kill me, taking refuge in liberation, wise man; of him who abides in delight in liberation, I dance and I laugh. Not to be slain of all beings I alone eternal.)
That wise one who, seeking liberation, attempts to slay me—over such a person who rejoices in liberation I dance and laugh. Of all beings, I alone am the eternal, not to be slain. (14-13-17)
तस्मात्त्वमपि तं कामं यज्ञैर्विविधदक्षिणैः। धर्मं कुरु महाराज तत्र ते स भविष्यति ॥१४-१३-१८॥
tasmāttvamapi taṁ kāmaṁ yajñairvividhadakṣiṇaiḥ। dharmaṁ kuru mahārāja tatra te sa bhaviṣyati ॥14-13-18॥
[तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अपि (api) - also; तं (taṁ) - that; कामं (kāmaṁ) - desire; यज्ञैः (yajñaiḥ) - by sacrifices; विविधदक्षिणैः (vividhadakṣiṇaiḥ) - with various gifts; धर्मं (dharmaṁ) - righteousness; कुरु (kuru) - do; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; तत्र (tatra) - there; ते (te) - for you; स (sa) - he/that; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be;]
(Therefore you also that desire by sacrifices with various gifts righteousness do O great king, there for you that will be.)
Therefore, O great king, you too should accomplish that desire by performing sacrifices with various gifts; thus, righteousness will be there for you. (14-13-18)
यजस्व वाजिमेधेन विधिवद्दक्षिणावता। अन्यैश्च विविधैर्यज्ञैः समृद्धैराप्तदक्षिणैः ॥१४-१३-१९॥
yajasva vājimedhena vidhivad-dakṣiṇāvatā। anyaiś ca vividhair yajñaiḥ samṛddhair āpta-dakṣiṇaiḥ ॥14-13-19॥
[यजस्व (yajasva) - perform sacrifice; वाजिमेधेन (vājimedhena) - with the horse-sacrifice; विधिवत् (vidhivat) - according to the prescribed rite; दक्षिणावता (dakṣiṇāvatā) - with (abundant) sacrificial gifts; अन्यैः (anyaiḥ) - with other; च (ca) - and; विविधैः (vividhaiḥ) - various; यज्ञैः (yajñaiḥ) - sacrifices; समृद्धैः (samṛddhaiḥ) - well-performed; आप्तदक्षिणैः (āpta-dakṣiṇaiḥ) - endowed with suitable gifts;]
(Perform sacrifice with the horse-sacrifice, according to the prescribed rite, with (abundant) sacrificial gifts, and with other various sacrifices, well-performed, endowed with suitable gifts.)
Perform the horse-sacrifice according to the prescribed rite and with abundant gifts, and undertake other various sacrifices as well, performed excellently and accompanied by fitting rewards. (14-13-19)
मा ते व्यथास्तु निहतान्बन्धून्वीक्ष्य पुनः पुनः। न शक्यास्ते पुनर्द्रष्टुं ये हतास्मिन्रणाजिरे ॥१४-१३-२०॥
mā te vyathāstu nihatān bandhūn vīkṣya punaḥ punaḥ। na śakyās te punar draṣṭuṃ ye hatāsmin raṇājire॥14-13-20॥
[मा (mā) - not (expressing prohibition); ते (te) - your; व्यथा (vyathā) - grief; अस्तु (astu) - let there be; निहतान् (nihatān) - slain; बन्धून् (bandhūn) - relatives; वीक्ष्य (vīkṣya) - having seen; पुनः पुनः (punaḥ punaḥ) - again and again; न (na) - not; शक्याः (śakyāḥ) - possible; ते (te) - they; पुनः (punar) - again; द्रष्टुम् (draṣṭum) - to see; ये (ye) - who; हताः (hatāḥ) - slain; अस्मिन् (asmin) - in this; रण-अजिरे (raṇa-ajire) - battlefield;]
(Not your grief let there be having seen slain relatives again and again. Not possible they again to see who slain in this battlefield.)
Let there not be your grief again and again on seeing the slain relatives. Those who are slain in this battlefield cannot be seen again. (14-13-20)
स त्वमिष्ट्वा महायज्ञैः समृद्धैराप्तदक्षिणैः। लोके कीर्तिं परां प्राप्य गतिमग्र्यां गमिष्यसि ॥१४-१३-२१॥
sa tvam iṣṭvā mahā-yajñaiḥ samṛddhaiḥ āpta-dakṣiṇaiḥ। loke kīrtiṃ parāṃ prāpya gatim agryāṃ gamiṣyasi॥14-13-21॥
[स (sa) - he; त्वम् (tvam) - you; इष्ट्वा (iṣṭvā) - having performed; महायज्ञैः (mahā-yajñaiḥ) - by great sacrifices; समृद्धैः (samṛddhaiḥ) - abundant; आप्तदक्षिणैः (āpta-dakṣiṇaiḥ) - with proper gifts; लोके (loke) - in (this) world; कीर्तिं (kīrtiṃ) - fame; पराम् (parām) - supreme; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having obtained; गतिम् (gatim) - state; अग्र्याम् (agryām) - highest; गमिष्यसि (gamiṣyasi) - you will attain;]
(He you having performed by great sacrifices abundant with proper gifts in (this) world fame supreme having obtained state highest you will attain.)
So, having performed great sacrifices that are abundant and endowed with proper gifts, you will obtain supreme fame in this world, and you will attain the highest state. (14-13-21)
