evaṁ bahuvidhairvākyairmunibhistais tapodhanaiḥ। samāśvasyata rājarṣir hatabandhur yudhiṣṭhiraḥ॥14-14-1॥

सोऽनुनीतो भगवता विष्टरश्रवसा स्वयम्। द्वैपायनेन कृष्णेन देवस्थानेन चाभिभूः ॥१४-१४-२॥
so'nunīto bhagavatā viṣṭaraśravasā svayam। dvaipāyanena kṛṣṇena devasthānena cābhibhūḥ ॥14-14-2॥

अन्यैश्च पुरुषव्याघ्रैर्ब्राह्मणैः शास्त्रदृष्टिभिः। व्यजहाच्छोकजं दुःखं सन्तापं चैव मानसम् ॥१४-१४-४॥
anyaiz ca puruṣavyāghrair brāhmaṇaiḥ śāstradṛṣṭibhiḥ। vyajahāc chokajaṃ duḥkhaṃ santāpaṃ caiva mānasam ॥14-14-4॥
[अन्यैः (anyaiḥ) - by others; च (ca) - and; पुरुषव्याघ्रैः (puruṣavyāghrair) - by tigers among men; ब्राह्मणैः (brāhmaṇaiḥ) - by Brāhmaṇas; शास्त्रदृष्टिभिः (śāstradṛṣṭibhiḥ) - with scripture-based views; व्यजहात् (vyajahāt) - he abandoned; शोकजम् (śokajam) - born from grief; दुःखम् (duḥkham) - suffering; सन्तापम् (santāpam) - affliction; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; मानसम् (mānasam) - of the mind;]
(By others and by tigers among men, by Brāhmaṇas with scripture-based views, he abandoned suffering born from grief, also the mental affliction indeed.)
With the help of other powerful men and Brāhmaṇas with knowledge of the scriptures, he cast off the suffering and mental pain born of grief. (14-14-4)
अर्चयामास देवांश्च ब्राह्मणांश्च युधिष्ठिरः। कृत्वाथ प्रेतकार्याणि बन्धूनां स पुनर्नृपः ॥ अन्वशासत धर्मात्मा पृथिवीं सागराम्बराम् ॥१४-१४-५॥
arcayāmāsa devāṃś ca brāhmaṇāṃś ca yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। kṛtvātha pretakāryāṇi bandhūnāṃ sa punar nṛpaḥ ॥ anvaśāsata dharmātmā pṛthivīṃ sāgarāmbarām ॥14-14-5॥

(Yudhiṣṭhira worshipped the gods and the brāhmaṇas; having performed then the funeral rites of the relatives, that king again, the righteous-souled, ruled the earth bounded by the ocean.)
Yudhiṣṭhira honored the gods and the brāhmaṇas, and after performing the funeral rites for his relatives, that virtuous king once again ruled over the earth surrounded by the ocean. (14-14-5)
प्रशान्तचेताः कौरव्यः स्वराज्यं प्राप्य केवलम्। व्यासं च नारदं चैव तांश्चान्यानब्रवीन्नृपः ॥१४-१४-६॥
praśāntacetāḥ kauravyaḥ svarājyaṃ prāpya kevalam। vyāsaṃ ca nāradaṃ caiva tāṃś cānyān abravīn nṛpaḥ ॥14-14-6॥
[प्रशान्तचेताः (praśāntacetāḥ) - with mind tranquil; कौरव्यः (kauravyaḥ) - the Kaurava (descendant of Kuru); स्वराज्यं (svarājyam) - own kingdom; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having obtained; केवलम् (kevalam) - only; व्यासं (vyāsam) - Vyāsa; च (ca) - and; नारदं (nāradaṃ) - Nārada; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; तान् (tān) - them; च (ca) - and; अन्यान् (anyān) - others; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - addressed; नृपः (nṛpaḥ) - the king;]
(With mind tranquil, the Kaurava, having obtained his own kingdom only, addressed Vyāsa and Nārada and them and others, the king.)
With a tranquil mind, the Kaurava, having attained his own kingdom, the king addressed Vyāsa, Nārada, and others. (14-14-6)
आश्वासितोऽहं प्राग्वृद्धैर्भवद्भिर्मुनिपुङ्गवैः। न सूक्ष्ममपि मे किञ्चिद्व्यलीकमिह विद्यते ॥१४-१४-७॥
āśvāsito'haṃ prāg-vṛddhair-bhavadbhiḥ muni-puṅgavaiḥ। na sūkṣmam-api me kiñcid vyalīkam-iha vidyate॥14-14-7॥
[आश्वासितः (āśvāsitaḥ) - reassured; comforted; अहम् (aham) - I; प्राक्-वृद्धैः (prāg-vṛddhaiḥ) - by elders; by senior (ones); भवद्भिः (bhavadbhiḥ) - by you; मुनि-पुङ्गवैः (muni-puṅgavaiḥ) - by foremost sages; by best of sages; न (na) - not; सूक्ष्मम् (sūkṣmam) - minute (thing); subtle; अपि (api) - even; मे (me) - to me; of me; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; even a little; व्यलीकम् (vyalīkam) - wrong; fault; error; इह (iha) - here; विद्यते (vidyate) - exists; is;]
(Reassured I by elders, by you, O best of sages; not even a subtle (thing) to me anything wrong here exists.)
I have been reassured by you, the elders and foremost of sages; not even the slightest fault exists here for me. (14-14-7)
अर्थश्च सुमहान्प्राप्तो येन यक्ष्यामि देवताः। पुरस्कृत्येह भवतः समानेष्यामहे मखम् ॥१४-१४-८॥
arthaś ca sumahān prāpto yena yakṣyāmi devatāḥ. puraskṛtya iha bhavataḥ samāneṣyāmahe makham ॥14-14-8॥
[अर्थः (arthaḥ) - purpose; wealth; reward; object; च (ca) - and; सुमहान् (sumahān) - very great; प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - obtained; येन (yena) - by whom; by which; यक्ष्यामि (yakṣyāmi) - I will worship; I will perform sacrifice; देवताः (devatāḥ) - the deities; पुरस्कृत्य (puraskṛtya) - having placed at the front; with leading; by honoring; इह (iha) - here; भवतः (bhavataḥ) - you (plural, respectful); समानेष्यामहे (samāneṣyāmahe) - we shall bring together; we will assemble; मखम् (makham) - sacrifice; rite;]
(And a very great object has been obtained, by whom I will worship the deities. Having honored you here, we shall assemble the sacrifice.)

हिमवन्तं त्वया गुप्ता गमिष्यामः पितामह। बह्वाश्चर्यो हि देशः स श्रूयते द्विजसत्तम ॥१४-१४-९॥
himavantaṃ tvayā guptā gamiṣyāmaḥ pitāmaha। bahvāścaryo hi deśaḥ sa śrūyate dvijasattama ॥14-14-9॥
[हिमवन्तं (himavantaṃ) - Himavat (the Himalaya; direct object/accusative); त्वया (tvayā) - by you; गुप्ता (guptā) - protected; गमिष्यामः (gamiṣyāmaḥ) - we shall go; पितामह (pitāmaha) - O ancestor; बहु-अश्चर्यः (bahu-aścaryaḥ) - many-wondrous; हि (hi) - indeed; देशः (deśaḥ) - region; स (sa) - that; श्रूयते (śrūyate) - is heard (of); द्विजसत्तम (dvijasattama) - O best among twice-born;]
(Himavat, by you protected, we shall go, O ancestor. Many-wondrous indeed region that is heard (of), O best among twice-born.)
O ancestor, protected by you, we shall go to the Himalaya. That region, O best among the twice-born, is indeed said to be full of many wonders. (14-14-9)
तथा भगवता चित्रं कल्याणं बहु भाषितम्। देवर्षिणा नारदेन देवस्थानेन चैव ह ॥१४-१४-१०॥
tathā bhagavatā citraṁ kalyāṇaṁ bahu bhāṣitam। devarṣiṇā nāradena devasthānena caiva ha ॥14-14-10॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; भगवता (bhagavatā) - by the venerable one; चित्रं (citraṁ) - wonderful; कल्याणं (kalyāṇam) - auspicious; बहु (bahu) - much; many times; भाषितम् (bhāṣitam) - spoken; देवर्षिणा (devarṣiṇā) - by the godly sage; नारदेन (nāradena) - by Nārada; देवस्थानेन (devasthānena) - by the divine temple; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(Thus, by the venerable one, the wonderful, auspicious (matter), much spoken, by the godly sage Nārada, by the divine temple indeed.)
Thus, the venerable sage Nārada has spoken much about the wonderful and auspicious (subject), indeed, also at the divine shrine. (14-14-10)
नाभागधेयः पुरुषः कश्चिदेवंविधान्गुरून्। लभते व्यसनं प्राप्य सुहृदः साधुसंमतान् ॥१४-१४-११॥
nābhāgadheyaḥ puruṣaḥ kaścid evaṃvidhān gurūn। labhate vyasanaṃ prāpya suhṛdaḥ sādhu-saṃmatān ॥14-14-11॥
[नाभागधेयः (nābhāgadheyaḥ) - without ancestral fortune; पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - man; कश्चित् (kaścit) - some; एवंविधान् (evaṃvidhān) - of this kind; गुरून् (gurūn) - teachers; लभते (labhate) - obtains; व्यसनं (vyasanaṃ) - misfortune; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having obtained; सुहृदः (suhṛdaḥ) - friends; साधुसंमतान् (sādhu-saṃmatān) - approved by the virtuous;]
(A man without ancestral fortune, having found such teachers, upon attaining friends approved by the virtuous, obtains misfortune.)
A person who is without ancestral fortune, even having teachers of this kind and friends approved by the virtuous, attains only misfortune. (14-14-11)
एवमुक्तास्तु ते राज्ञा सर्व एव महर्षयः। अभ्यनुज्ञाप्य राजानं तथोभौ कृष्णफल्गुनौ ॥ पश्यतामेव सर्वेषां तत्रैवादर्शनं ययुः ॥१४-१४-१२॥
evam-uktās tu te rājñā sarva eva maharṣayaḥ। abhyanujñāpya rājānaṁ tathobhau kṛṣṇa-phalgunau॥ paśyatām eva sarveṣāṁ tatraiva adarśanam yayuḥ॥14-14-12॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्ताः (uktāḥ) - having been addressed; तु (tu) - but; ते (te) - they; राज्ञा (rājñā) - by the king; सर्वः (sarvaḥ) - all; एव (eva) - indeed; महर्षयः (maharṣayaḥ) - great sages; अभ्यनुज्ञाप्य (abhyanujñāpya) - having taken leave; राजानम् (rājānam) - the king; तथा (tathā) - thus; उभौ (ubhau) - both; कृष्णफल्गुनौ (kṛṣṇa-phalgunau) - Kṛṣṇa and Arjuna; पश्यताम् (paśyatām) - while being seen; एव (eva) - indeed; सर्वेषाम् (sarveṣām) - by all; तत्र (tatra) - there; एव (eva) - just; अदर्शनम् (adarśanam) - disappearance; ययुः (yayuḥ) - they went (attained);]
(Thus, having been addressed by the king, all the great sages indeed, after having taken leave of the king, and thus also both Kṛṣṇa and Arjuna, while being seen by all there, at that very place, went to disappearance.)
Thus, after being addressed by the king, all the great sages—and both Kṛṣṇa and Arjuna—took leave of the king, and, as everyone was watching, there itself they disappeared. (14-14-12)
ततो धर्मसुतो राजा तत्रैवोपाविशत्प्रभुः। एवं नातिमहान्कालः स तेषामभ्यवर्तत ॥१४-१४-१३॥
tato dharmasuto rājā tatraivopāviśat prabhuḥ। evaṃ nātimahān kālaḥ sa teṣām abhyavartata॥14-14-13॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; धर्मसुतः (dharmasutaḥ) - Dharmasuta (son of Dharma; Yudhishthira); राजा (rājā) - king; तत्रैव (tatra eva) - there itself; उपाविशत् (upāviśat) - sat down; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - lord; एवम् (evam) - thus; न (na) - not; अतिमहान् (atimahān) - very great; कालः (kālaḥ) - period (of time); सः (saḥ) - he; तेषाम् (teṣām) - for them; अभ्यवर्तत (abhyavartata) - elapsed;]
(Then Dharmasuta the king, lord, sat down there itself. Thus not very great period (of time) for them elapsed. (14-14-13))

कुर्वतां शौचकर्माणि भीष्मस्य निधने तदा। महादानानि विप्रेभ्यो ददतामौर्ध्वदैहिकम् ॥१४-१४-१४॥
kurvatāṃ śaucakarmāṇi bhīṣmasya nidhane tadā। mahādānāni viprebhyo dadatām aurdhvadaihikam॥14-14-14॥
[कुर्वतां (kurvatām) - of those performing; शौचकर्माणि (śaucakarmāṇi) - purificatory rites; भीष्मस्य (bhīṣmasya) - of Bhīṣma; निधने (nidhane) - at the death; तदा (tadā) - at that time; महादानानि (mahādānāni) - great gifts; विप्रेभ्यः (viprebhyaḥ) - to the Brāhmaṇas; ददताम् (dadatām) - of those giving; और्ध्वदैहिकम् (aurdhvadaihikam) - funerary rites;]
(Of those performing purificatory rites at the death of Bhīṣma at that time, great gifts to the Brāhmaṇas, of those giving, funerary rites.)
At the time of Bhīṣma’s death, while the purificatory and funerary rites were being performed, great gifts were given to the Brāhmaṇas. (14-14-14)
भीष्मकर्णपुरोगाणां कुरूणां कुरुनन्दन। सहितो धृतराष्ट्रेण प्रददावौर्ध्वदैहिकम् ॥१४-१४-१५॥
bhīṣma-karṇa-purogāṇāṃ kurūṇāṃ kurunandana। sahito dhṛtarāṣṭreṇa pradadāvaurdhvadehikam ॥14-14-15॥
[भीष्मकर्णपुरोगाणाम् (bhīṣma-karṇa-purogāṇām) - of those led by Bhīṣma and Karṇa; कुरूणाम् (kurūṇām) - of the Kuru-s; कुरुनन्दन (kurunandana) - O delight of the Kurus; सहितः (sahitaḥ) - together; धृतराष्ट्रेण (dhṛtarāṣṭreṇa) - with Dhṛtarāṣṭra; प्रददौ (pradadau) - offered; और्ध्वदैहिकम् (aurdhvadaihikam) - funeral rites;]
(O delight of the Kurus, together with Dhṛtarāṣṭra, offered the funeral rites for the Kurus led by Bhīṣma and Karṇa.)
O Kurunandana, along with Dhṛtarāṣṭra, offered the funeral rites for the Kurus headed by Bhīṣma and Karṇa. (14-14-15)
ततो दत्त्वा बहु धनं विप्रेभ्यः पाण्डवर्षभः। धृतराष्ट्रं पुरस्कृत्य विवेश गजसाह्वयम् ॥१४-१४-१६॥
tato dattvā bahu dhanaṃ viprebhyaḥ pāṇḍavarṣabhaḥ। dhṛtarāṣṭraṃ puraskṛtya viveśa gajasāhvayam ॥14-14-16॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; दत्त्वा (dattvā) - having given; बहु (bahu) - much; धनं (dhanaṃ) - wealth; विप्रेभ्यः (viprebhyaḥ) - to the Brāhmaṇas; पाण्डवर्षभः (pāṇḍavarṣabhaḥ) - the bull among the Pāṇḍavas; धृतराष्ट्रं (dhṛtarāṣṭram) - Dhṛtarāṣṭra; पुरस्कृत्य (puraskṛtya) - placing at the front; विवेश (viveśa) - entered; गजसाह्वयम् (gajasāhvayam) - Hastināpura;]
(Then, having given much wealth to the Brāhmaṇas, the bull among the Pāṇḍavas, placing Dhṛtarāṣṭra at the front, entered Hastināpura.)
Then, after giving much wealth to the Brāhmaṇas, the foremost of the Pāṇḍavas, placing Dhṛtarāṣṭra at the front, entered Hastināpura. (14-14-16)
स समाश्वास्य पितरं प्रज्ञाचक्षुषमीश्वरम्। अन्वशाद्वै स धर्मात्मा पृथिवीं भ्रातृभिः सह ॥१४-१४-१७॥
sa samāśvāsya pitaraṃ prajñācakṣuṣam īśvaram। anvaśād vai sa dharmātmā pṛthivīṃ bhrātṛbhiḥ saha ॥14-14-17॥

(He, having consoled his father, the lord whose eye is wisdom, indeed he, the righteous-souled one, ruled the earth together with his brothers.)
He consoled his father, the wise and lordly one, and then that righteous soul ruled the earth together with his brothers. (14-14-17)
