अत्राप्युदाहरन्तीममितिहासं पुरातनम्। कार्तवीर्यस्य संवादं समुद्रस्य च भामिनि ॥१४-२९-१॥
atrāpy udāharantīm am itihāsaṃ purātanam। kārtavīryasya saṃvādaṃ samudrasya ca bhāmini॥14-29-1॥

कार्तवीर्यार्जुनो नाम राजा बाहुसहस्रवान्। येन सागरपर्यन्ता धनुषा निर्जिता मही ॥१४-२९-२॥
kārtavīryārjuno nāma rājā bāhu-sahasravān। yena sāgara-paryantā dhanuṣā nirjitā mahī ॥14-29-2॥

There was a king named Kārtavīrya Arjuna, who had a thousand arms; with his bow he conquered the earth, which extended to the ocean. (14-29-2)
स कदाचित्समुद्रान्ते विचरन्बलदर्पितः। अवाकिरच्छरशतैः समुद्रमिति नः श्रुतम् ॥१४-२९-३॥
sa kadācitsamudrānte vicaran baladarapitaḥ। avākiraccharaśataiḥ samudram iti naḥ śrutam॥14-29-3॥

(He once at the edge of the ocean, wandering, puffed up by strength, he scattered with hundreds of arrows the ocean, thus to us has been heard.)
We have heard that, once, while wandering at the edge of the ocean, puffed up by his strength, he scattered hundreds of arrows into the ocean. (14-29-3)
तं समुद्रो नमस्कृत्य कृताञ्जलिरुवाच ह। मा मुञ्च वीर नाराचान्ब्रूहि किं करवाणि ते ॥१४-२९-४॥
taṃ samudro namaskṛtya kṛtāñjaliruvāca ha। mā muñca vīra nārācānbrūhi kiṃ karavāṇi te॥14-29-4॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; समुद्रः (samudraḥ) - the ocean; नमस्कृत्य (namaskṛtya) - having bowed; कृताञ्जलिः (kṛtāñjaliḥ) - with joined palms; उवाच (uvāca) - said; ह (ha) - indeed; मा (mā) - do not; मुञ्च (muñca) - release; वीर (vīra) - hero; नाराचन् (nārācān) - iron arrows; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - tell; किं (kiṃ) - what; करवाणि (karavāṇi) - shall I do; ते (te) - for you;]
(Him the ocean having bowed with joined palms indeed said: "Do not release, hero, the iron arrows; tell (me) what shall I do for you?")
The ocean, having bowed to him with joined palms, spoke: "Hero, do not release the iron arrows; tell me what I should do for you." (14-29-4)
मदाश्रयाणि भूतानि त्वद्विसृष्टैर्महेषुभिः। वध्यन्ते राजशार्दूल तेभ्यो देह्यभयं विभो ॥१४-२९-५॥
madāśrayāṇi bhūtāni tvad-visṛṣṭair maheṣubhiḥ। vadhyante rāja-śārdūla tebhyo dehya-bhayaṃ vibho ॥14-29-5॥
[मदाश्रयाणि (madāśrayāṇi) - attached to intoxication; dependent on pride or arrogance; भूतानि (bhūtāni) - beings; त्वद्विसृष्टैः (tvad-visṛṣṭaiḥ) - by those released by you; महेषुभिः (maheṣubhiḥ) - by great arrows; वध्यन्ते (vadhyante) - are being slain; राजशार्दूल (rāja-śārdūla) - O tiger among kings; तेभ्यः (tebhyaḥ) - from them; देहि (dehi) - grant; अभयं (abhayaṃ) - fearlessness; protection; विभो (vibho) - O mighty one;]
(Beings attached to intoxication are being slain by the great arrows released by you, O tiger among kings; from them grant protection, O mighty one.)

मत्समो यदि सङ्ग्रामे शरासनधरः क्वचित्। विद्यते तं ममाचक्ष्व यः समासीत मां मृधे ॥१४-२९-६॥
matsamo yadi saṅgrāme śarāsanadharaḥ kvacit। vidyate taṁ mamācakṣva yaḥ samāsīta māṁ mṛdhe ॥14-29-6॥
[मत्समः (matsamaḥ) - equal to me; यदि (yadi) - if; सङ्ग्रामे (saṅgrāme) - in battle; शरासनधरः (śarāsanadharaḥ) - bow-bearer; क्वचित् (kvacit) - anywhere; विद्यते (vidyate) - exists; तम् (tam) - him; मम (mama) - to me; आचक्ष्व (ācakṣva) - tell; यः (yaḥ) - who; सम्-अासीत् (sam-āsīt) - was equal; माम् (mām) - to me; मृधे (mṛdhe) - in the fight;]
(If anywhere in battle a bow-bearer equal to me exists, tell me that one who was equal to me in the fight.)
If there is any bow-bearer anywhere in battle who is equal to me, tell me of him—one who was my equal in the fight. (14-29-6)

The ocean said.
महर्षिर्जमदग्निस्ते यदि राजन्परिश्रुतः। तस्य पुत्रस्तवातिथ्यं यथावत्कर्तुमर्हति ॥१४-२९-७॥
maharṣir jamadagnis te yadi rājan pariśrutaḥ। tasya putras tavātithyaṃ yathāvat kartum arhati॥14-29-7॥
[महर्षिः (maharṣiḥ) - great sage; जमदग्निः (jamadgniḥ) - Jamadagni; ते (te) - your; यदि (yadi) - if; राजन् (rājan) - O king; परिश्रुतः (pariśrutaḥ) - well-known; तस्य (tasya) - his; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; तव (tava) - your; आतिथ्यं (ātithyaṃ) - hospitality; यथावत् (yathāvat) - properly; कर्तुम् (kartum) - to do; अर्हति (arhati) - is worthy;]
(The great sage Jamadagni, if well-known to you, O king; his son is worthy to do your hospitality properly.)
If the great sage Jamadagni is well-known to you, O king, then his son is worthy to properly perform your hospitality. (14-29-7)
ततः स राजा प्रययौ क्रोधेन महता वृतः। स तमाश्रममागम्य राममेवान्वपद्यत ॥१४-२९-८॥
tataḥ sa rājā prayayau krodhena mahatā vṛtaḥ। sa tam āśramam āgamya rāmam eva anvapadyata ॥14-29-8॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; स (sa) - he; राजा (rājā) - king; प्रययौ (prayayau) - went; क्रोधेन (krodhena) - with anger; महता (mahatā) - great; वृतः (vṛtaḥ) - enveloped; स (sa) - he; तम् (tam) - that; आश्रमम् (āśramam) - hermitage; आगम्य (āgamya) - having come; रामम् (rāmam) - Rāma; एव (eva) - only; अन्वपद्यत (anvapadyata) - approached;]
(Then he, the king, went, enveloped with great anger; he, having come to that hermitage, only Rāma he approached.)
Then the king, filled with great anger, went; having arrived at that hermitage, he approached only Rāma. (14-29-8)
स रामप्रतिकूलानि चकार सह बन्धुभिः। आयासं जनयामास रामस्य च महात्मनः ॥१४-२९-९॥
sa rāmapratikūlāni cakāra saha bandhubhiḥ। āyāsaṃ janayāmāsa rāmasya ca mahātmanaḥ ॥14-29-9॥
[स (sa) - he; रामप्रतिकूलानि (rāma-pratikūlāni) - things opposed to Rāma; चकार (cakāra) - he did; सह (saha) - with; बन्धुभिः (bandhubhiḥ) - relatives; आयासं (āyāsam) - fatigue; जनयामास (janayāmāsa) - he caused to arise; रामस्य (rāmasya) - of Rāma; च (ca) - and; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - of the great-souled;]
(He things opposed to Rāma did with relatives. Fatigue he caused to arise of Rāma and of the great-souled.)
He, together with his relatives, did things opposed to Rāma and caused fatigue for Rāma, the great-souled one. (14-29-9)
ततस्तेजः प्रजज्वाल रामस्यामिततेजसः। प्रदहद्रिपुसैन्यानि तदा कमललोचने ॥१४-२९-१०॥
tatas tejaḥ prajajvāla rāmasyāmitatejasaḥ। pradahad ripu-sainyāni tadā kamalalocane ॥14-29-10॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तेजः (tejaḥ) - splendor; प्रजज्वाल (prajajvāla) - blazed forth; रामस्य (rāmasya) - of Rāma; अमिततेजसः (amitatejasaḥ) - of immeasurable radiance; प्रदहद् (pradahad) - burning; रिपु (ripu) - enemy; सैन्यानि (sainyāni) - armies; तदा (tadā) - then; कमललोचने (kamalalocane) - O lotus-eyed one;]
(Then, the splendor blazed forth of Rāma, of immeasurable radiance, burning the enemy armies, then, O lotus-eyed one.)
Then, O lotus-eyed one, the splendor of Rāma, whose radiance is immeasurable, blazed forth, burning the armies of the enemy. (14-29-10)
ततः परशुमादाय स तं बाहुसहस्रिणम्। चिच्छेद सहसा रामो बाहुशाखमिव द्रुमम् ॥१४-२९-११॥
tataḥ paraśum ādāya sa taṃ bāhu-sahasriṇam। ciccheda sahasā rāmo bāhu-śākham iva drumam॥14-29-11॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; परशुम् (paraśum) - axe; आदाय (ādāya) - having taken; स (sa) - he; तम् (tam) - that; बाहुसहस्रिणम् (bāhu-sahasriṇam) - with a thousand arms; चिच्छेद (ciccheda) - cut off; सहसा (sahasā) - suddenly; रामः (rāmaḥ) - Rama; बाहुशाखम् (bāhu-śākham) - branch of arm; इव (iva) - like; द्रुमम् (drumam) - tree;]
(Then, having taken the axe, he that (one with) thousand arms, was cut off suddenly by Rama, (his) arm-branch like (of a) tree.)
Then Rama, having taken the axe, suddenly cut off the thousand-armed one's arm-branch as if (he were cutting) a branch from a tree. (14-29-11)
तं हतं पतितं दृष्ट्वा समेताः सर्वबान्धवाः। असीनादाय शक्तीश्च भार्गवं पर्यवारयन् ॥१४-२९-१२॥
taṃ hataṃ patitaṃ dṛṣṭvā sametāḥ sarva-bāndhavāḥ। asīn ādāya śaktīś ca bhārgavaṃ paryavārayan ॥14-29-12॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; हतं (hataṃ) - slain; पतितं (patitaṃ) - fallen; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; समेताः (sametāḥ) - assembled; सर्वबान्धवाः (sarva-bāndhavāḥ) - all kinsmen; असीन् (asīn) - swords; आदाय (ādāya) - having taken; शक्तीः (śaktīḥ) - lances; च (ca) - and; भार्गवं (bhārgavam) - Bhr̥gu's descendant (the Bhārgava); पर्यवादयन् (paryavārayan) - encircled;]
(Him slain fallen having seen, assembled all kinsmen, swords having taken lances and Bhr̥gu's descendant encircled.)
Seeing him fallen and slain, all the assembled kinsmen, having taken swords and lances, encircled the Bhārgava. (14-29-12)
रामोऽपि धनुरादाय रथमारुह्य सत्वरः। विसृजञ्शरवर्षाणि व्यधमत्पार्थिवं बलम् ॥१४-२९-१३॥
Rāmo’pi dhanur ādāya ratham āruhy sa-tvaraḥ। visṛjan śara-varṣāṇi vyadhamat pārthivaṃ balam ॥14-29-13॥
[रामः (Rāmaḥ) - Rāma; the proper noun, son of Daśaratha; अपि (api) - also; even; moreover; धनुः (dhanuḥ) - bow; आदाय (ādāya) - having taken; taking up; रथम् (ratham) - chariot; आaruh्य (āruhy) - having mounted; getting up on; सत्वरः (sa-tvaraḥ) - quick; swift; eager; विसृजन् (visṛjan) - releasing; discharging; शरवर्षाणि (śara-varṣāṇi) - arrows-showers; showers of arrows; व्यधमत् (vyadhamat) - he dispersed; scattered; पार्थिवम् (pārthivam) - of the king; royal; referring to kings; बलम् (balam) - army; strength; force;]
(Rāma also, having taken up the bow, having mounted the chariot, swift, releasing showers of arrows, dispersed the royal army.)
Rāma too, swiftly took up his bow, climbed into the chariot, and, releasing showers of arrows, scattered the king's army. (14-29-13)
ततस्तु क्षत्रियाः केचिज्जमदग्निं निहत्य च। विविशुर्गिरिदुर्गाणि मृगाः सिंहार्दिता इव ॥१४-२९-१४॥
tatastu kṣatriyāḥ kecijjamadagniṃ nihatya ca। viviśurgiridurghāṇi mṛgāḥ siṃhārditā iva ॥14-29-14॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तु (tu) - but; क्षत्रियाः (kṣatriyāḥ) - kṣatriyas; केचित् (kecit) - some; जमदग्निम् (jamadagniṃ) - Jamadagni (a proper noun, the sage); निहत्य (nihatya) - having slain; च (ca) - and; विविशुः (viviśuḥ) - entered; गिरिदुर्गाणि (giri-durgāṇi) - mountain-fortresses; मृगाः (mṛgāḥ) - deer; सिंहार्दिताः (siṃhārditāḥ) - distressed by lions; इव (iva) - like;]
(Then but the kṣatriyas some Jamadagni having slain and entered mountain-fortresses, deer distressed by lions like.)
Then, however, some of the kṣatriyas, having slain Jamadagni, entered the mountain strongholds like deer distressed by lions. (14-29-14)
तेषां स्वविहितं कर्म तद्भयान्नानुतिष्ठताम्। प्रजा वृषलतां प्राप्ता ब्राह्मणानामदर्शनात् ॥१४-२९-१५॥
teṣāṃ svakṛtam karma tad-bhayān na anutiṣṭhatām। prajā vṛṣalatāṃ prāptā brāhmaṇānām adarśanāt॥14-29-15॥
[तेषां (teṣām) - of them; स्वविहितं (svavihitam) - prescribed by themselves; कर्म (karma) - action; तत् (tat) - that; भयात् (bhayāt) - from fear; न (na) - not; अनुतिष्ठताम् (anutiṣṭhatām) - for those not performing; प्रजा (prajā) - people; वृषलतां (vṛṣalatām) - state of being outcaste; प्राप्ता (prāptā) - have attained; ब्राह्मणानाम् (brāhmaṇānām) - of the Brāhmaṇas; अदर्शनात् (adarśanāt) - because of the absence;]
(Of them, their prescribed action, from fear, for those not performing, the people, the state of being outcaste, have attained, because of the absence of the Brāhmaṇas.)
Because they did not perform their prescribed duties out of fear, the people became outcastes due to the absence of the Brāhmaṇas. (14-29-15)
त एते द्रमिडाः काशाः पुण्ड्राश्च शबरैः सह। वृषलत्वं परिगता व्युत्थानात्क्षत्रधर्मतः ॥१४-२९-१६॥
ta ete dramiḍāḥ kāśāḥ puṇḍrāś ca śabaraiḥ saha| vṛṣalatvaṃ parigatā vyutthānāt kṣatradharmataḥ ॥14-29-16॥
[त (ta) - they; एते (ete) - these; द्रमिडाः (dramiḍāḥ) - Dravidian peoples; काशाः (kāśāḥ) - Kāśa people; पुण्ड्राः (puṇḍrāḥ) - Puṇḍra people; च (ca) - and; शबरैः (śabaraiḥ) - with Śabaras; सह (saha) - together with; वृषलत्वं (vṛṣalatvaṃ) - status of vṛṣala (outcaste); परिगता (parigatā) - have obtained; व्युत्थानात् (vyutthānāt) - because of departure; क्षत्रधर्मतः (kṣatradharmataḥ) - from kṣatriya-dharma (warrior duty);]
(They, these Dravidians, Kāśas, and Puṇḍras, together with the Śabaras, have obtained outcaste status because of departure from kṣatriya-dharma (warrior duty).)
These Dravidians, Kāśas, Puṇḍras and the Śabaras attained the status of outcastes because they abandoned their kṣatriya duties. (14-29-16)
ततस्तु हतवीरासु क्षत्रियासु पुनः पुनः। द्विजैरुत्पादितं क्षत्रं जामदग्न्यो न्यकृन्तत ॥१४-२९-१७॥
tatastu hatavīrāsu kṣatriyāsu punaḥ punaḥ। dvijairutpāditaṃ kṣatraṃ jāmadagnyo nyakr̥ntata ॥14-29-17॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तु (tu) - but; हतवीरासु (hatavīrāsu) - among the slain-heroes; क्षत्रियासु (kṣatriyāsu) - among the kṣatriyas; पुनः पुनः (punaḥ punaḥ) - again and again; द्विजैः (dvijaiḥ) - by the twice-born (brāhmaṇas); उत्पादितं (utpāditaṃ) - produced; क्षत्रं (kṣatram) - kṣatriya race; जामदग्न्यः (jāmadagnyaḥ) - the son of Jamadagni (Paraśurāma); न्यकृन्तत (nyakr̥ntata) - he cut down;]
(Then but, among the slain-heroes, among the kṣatriyas, again and again, by the twice-born, produced kṣatriya race, the son of Jamadagni cut down.)
But then, whenever new races of kṣatriyas were produced again and again by the twice-born among the slain kṣatriyas, the son of Jamadagni (Paraśurāma) cut them down. (14-29-17)
एकविंशतिमेधान्ते रामं वागशरीरिणी। दिव्या प्रोवाच मधुरा सर्वलोकपरिश्रुता ॥१४-२९-१८॥
ekaviṃśatimedhānte rāmaṃ vāgśarīriṇī. divyā provāca madhurā sarvalokapariśrutā ॥14-29-18॥
[एकविंशति-मेधान्ते (ekaviṃśati-medhānte) - at the end of the twenty-first sacrifice; रामम् (rāmam) - Rama (accusative singular); वाक्-शरीरिणी (vāk-śarīriṇī) - she who is embodied as Speech; दिव्या (divyā) - divine (feminine nominative singular); प्रोवाच (provāca) - said (perfect third person singular); मधुरा (madhurā) - sweet (feminine nominative singular); सर्वलोक-परिश्रुता (sarvaloka-pariśrutā) - renowned in all worlds (feminine nominative singular);]
(At the end of the twenty-first sacrifice, to Rama, she who is embodied as Speech, the divine, said, sweet, renowned in all worlds.)
At the end of the twenty-first sacrifice, the divine and sweet-voiced goddess of Speech, renowned in all worlds, spoke to Rama. (14-29-18)
राम राम निवर्तस्व कं गुणं तात पश्यसि। क्षत्रबन्धूनिमान्प्राणैर्विप्रयोज्य पुनः पुनः ॥१४-२९-१९॥
rāma rāma nivartasva kaṃ guṇaṃ tāta paśyasi। kṣatrabandhūnimānprāṇairviprayojya punaḥ punaḥ ॥14-29-19॥
[राम (rāma) - O Rāma; राम (rāma) - O Rāma; निवर्तस्व (nivartasva) - turn back; कं (kaṃ) - what; गुणं (guṇaṃ) - virtue; तात (tāta) - dear one; पश्यसि (paśyasi) - do you see; क्षत्रबन्धून् (kṣatrabandhūn) - these kṣatriya relatives; इमान् (imān) - these; प्राणैः (prāṇaiḥ) - with lives; विप्रयोज्य (viprayojya) - depriving; पुनः पुनः (punaḥ punaḥ) - again and again;]
(O Rāma, O Rāma, turn back, what virtue, dear one, do you see, these kṣatriya relatives, these, with lives, depriving, again and again?)
O Rāma, O Rāma, turn back! Dear one, what virtue do you see in repeatedly depriving these kṣatriya relatives of their lives? (14-29-19)
तथैव तं महात्मानमृचीकप्रमुखास्तदा। पितामहा महाभाग निवर्तस्वेत्यथाब्रुवन् ॥१४-२९-२०॥
tathaiva taṁ mahātmānam ṛcīka-pramukhās tadā। pitāmahā mahābhāga nivartasva ity athābruvan॥14-29-20॥
[तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; similarly; तं (taṁ) - him; महात्मानम् (mahātmānam) - the great-souled one; ऋचीकप्रमुखाः (ṛcīka-pramukhāḥ) - with Ṛcīka as chief; chief among whom was Ṛcīka; तदा (tadā) - then; पितामहाः (pitāmahāḥ) - the ancestors; forefathers; महाभाग (mahābhāga) - O greatly fortunate one; निवर्तस्व (nivartasva) - return; turn back; इति (iti) - thus; अथ (atha) - then; अब्रुवन् (abruvan) - they spoke;]
(Similarly, him the great-souled one, with Ṛcīka as chief, then the ancestors, O greatly fortunate one, return thus—then they spoke.)
In the same way, the ancestors, headed by Ṛcīka, then said to him, the great-souled one: "O greatly fortunate one, return!" (14-29-20)
पितुर्वधममृष्यंस्तु रामः प्रोवाच तानृषीन्। नार्हन्तीह भवन्तो मां निवारयितुमित्युत ॥१४-२९-२१॥
pitur vadham amṛṣyam tu rāmaḥ provāca tān ṛṣīn। nārhantīha bhavanto māṃ nivārayitum ity uta ॥14-29-21॥
[पितुः (pituḥ) - of (his) father; वधम् (vadham) - killing; अमृष्यं (amṛṣyam) - intolerable; तु (tu) - but; रामः (rāmaḥ) - Rama; प्रोवाच (provāca) - said; तान् (tān) - to those; ऋषीन् (ṛṣīn) - sages; न (na) - not; अर्हन्ति (arhanti) - are worthy; इह (iha) - here; भवन्तः (bhavantaḥ) - you (honorable sirs); माम् (mām) - me; निवारयितुम् (nivārayitum) - to restrain; इति (iti) - thus; उत (uta) - indeed;]
(But Rama, unable to endure the killing of (his) father, spoke to those sages: “Here, you honorable sirs, are not worthy to restrain me,” thus indeed.)
But Rama, unable to bear his father’s killing, spoke to those sages: “You, sirs, should not restrain me here.” (14-29-21)

The ancestors said.
नार्हसे क्षत्रबन्धूंस्त्वं निहन्तुं जयतां वर। न हि युक्तं त्वया हन्तुं ब्राह्मणेन सता नृपान् ॥१४-२९-२२॥
nārhase kṣatrabandhūṁstvaṁ nihantuṁ jayatāṁ vara. na hi yuktaṁ tvayā hantuṁ brāhmaṇena satā nṛpān ॥14-29-22॥
[नार्हसे (nārhase) - (you) are not worthy; क्षत्रबन्धून् (kṣatrabandhūn) - Kṣatriya relatives; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; निहन्तुं (nihantuṁ) - to kill; जयतां (jayatāṁ) - of the victorious; वर (vara) - best; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; युक्तं (yuktaṁ) - proper; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; हन्तुं (hantuṁ) - to kill; ब्राह्मणेन (brāhmaṇena) - by (a) Brāhmaṇa; सता (satā) - being; नृपान् (nṛpān) - kings;]
(You are not worthy to kill Kṣatriya relatives, O best of the victorious. Indeed, it is not proper for you, being a Brāhmaṇa, to kill kings.)
