स सागरान्तां धनुषा विनिर्जित्य महीमिमाम्। कृत्वा सुदुष्करं कर्म मनः सूक्ष्मे समादधे ॥१४-३०-३॥
sa sāgarāntāṃ dhanuṣā vinirjitya mahīm imām । kṛtvā suduṣkaraṃ karma manaḥ sūkṣme samādadhe ॥14-30-3॥

स्थितस्य वृक्षमूलेऽथ तस्य चिन्ता बभूव ह। उत्सृज्य सुमहद्राज्यं सूक्ष्मं प्रति महामते ॥१४-३०-४॥

manaso me balaṃ jātaṃ mano jitvā dhruvo jayaḥ। anyatra bāṇān asyāmi śatrubhiḥ parivāritaḥ ॥14-30-5॥
[मनसो (manasaḥ) - of the mind; मे (me) - my; बलं (balaṃ) - strength; जातं (jātaṃ) - has arisen; मनो (manaḥ) - the mind; जित्वा (jitvā) - having conquered; ध्रुवः (dhruvaḥ) - certain; जयः (jayaḥ) - victory; अन्यत्र (anyatra) - elsewhere; बाणान् (bāṇān) - arrows; अस्यामि (asyāmi) - I will release; शत्रुभिः (śatrubhiḥ) - by enemies; परिवारितः (parivāritaḥ) - surrounded;]
(Of the mind, my strength has arisen; having conquered the mind, certain is victory. Elsewhere, I will release arrows, surrounded by enemies.)

यदिदं चापलान्मूर्तेः सर्वमेतच्चिकीर्षति। मनः प्रति सुतीक्ष्णाग्रानहं मोक्ष्यामि सायकान् ॥१४-३०-६॥
yad idaṃ cāpalān mūrteḥ sarvam etac cikīrṣati। manaḥ prati sutīkṣṇāgrān ahaṃ mokṣyāmi sāyakān ॥14-30-6॥
[यत् (yat) - which; इदं (idaṃ) - this; चापलात् (cāpalāt) - from fickleness; मूर्तेः (mūrteḥ) - of the form; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; एतत् (etat) - this; चिकीर्षति (cikīrṣati) - desires to do; मनः (manaḥ) - mind; प्रति (prati) - against; सुतीक्ष्ण-अग्रान् (sutīkṣṇāgrān) - with very sharp points; अहम् (aham) - I; मोक्ष्यामि (mokṣyāmi) - will release; सायकान् (sāyakān) - arrows;]
(Which this from fickleness of the form all this desires to do; against the mind with very sharp-pointed (arrows) I will release arrows.)
All that this form, out of fickleness, wishes to do—against the mind, I will release arrows with exceptionally sharp tips. (14-30-6)

नेमे बाणास्तरिष्यन्ति मामलर्क कथञ्चन। तवैव मर्म भेत्स्यन्ति भिन्नमर्मा मरिष्यसि ॥१४-३०-७॥
neme bāṇās tariṣyanti mām alarka kathañcana। tavaiva marma bhetsyanti bhinnamarmā mariṣyasi॥14-30-7॥
[ने (na ime) - not these; मे (ime) - these; बाणाः (bāṇāḥ) - arrows; तरिष्यन्ति (tariṣyanti) - will cross, will reach; माम् (mām) - me; अलर्क (alarka) - O Alarka; कथञ्चन (kathañcana) - in any way, at all; तवैव (tava eva) - of yours only; मर्म (marma) - vital spot; भेत्स्यन्ति (bhetsyanti) - will pierce, will break through; भिन्नमर्मा (bhinna-marmā) - one whose vital points are broken; मषिष्यसि (mariṣyasi) - you will die;]
(Not these arrows will reach me, O Alarka, in any way. Only your vital spot they will pierce; as one whose vital points are broken, you will die. (14-30-7))
O Alarka, these arrows will not reach me at all. They will only pierce your own vital spot; with your vital points shattered, you will die. (14-30-7)
अन्यान्बाणान्समीक्षस्व यैस्त्वं मां सूदयिष्यसि। तच्छ्रुत्वा स विचिन्त्याथ ततो वचनमब्रवीत् ॥१४-३०-८॥
anyān bāṇān samīkṣasva yais tvaṃ māṃ sūdayiṣyasi. tac chrutvā sa vicintyātha tato vacanam abravīt ॥14-30-8॥

āghrāya subahūn gandhān tān eva pratigṛdhyati। tasmād ghrāṇaṃ prati śarān prati mokṣyāmi ahaṃ śitān॥14-30-9॥
[आघ्राय (āghrāya) - having smelled; सुबहून् (subahūn) - many; गन्धान् (gandhān) - scents; तान् (tān) - them; एव (eva) - indeed; प्रतिगृध्यति (pratigṛdhyati) - desires in return; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; घ्राणम् (ghrāṇam) - nose; प्रतिशरान् (prati śarān) - towards (the) arrows; प्रतिमोक्ष्यामि (pratimokṣyāmi) - I will shoot; अहम् (aham) - I; शितान् (śitān) - sharp;]
(Having smelled many scents, it indeed desires them in return. Therefore, towards the nose, I will shoot sharp arrows.)

iyaṃ svādūn rasān bhuktvā tān eva pratigṛdhyati। tasmāj jihvāṃ prati śarān pratimokṣyāmy ahaṃ śitān ॥14-30-12॥

(This, having enjoyed delicious tastes, desires them again. Therefore, towards the tongue I shall release sharp arrows.)
After having tasted delicious flavors, this (tongue) craves them again. Therefore, I shall release sharp arrows at the tongue. (14-30-12)

spṛṣṭvā tvag-vividhān sparśān tān eva pratigṛdhyati। tasmāt tvacaṃ pāṭayiṣye vividhaiḥ kaṅka-patribhiḥ ॥14-30-15॥
[स्पृष्ट्वा (spṛṣṭvā) - having touched; त्वक्-विविधान् (tvag-vividhān) - of various kinds of skin; स्पर्शान् (sparśān) - contacts; तान् एव (tān eva) - those indeed; प्रतिगृध्यति (pratigṛdhyati) - desires; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; त्वचम् (tvacam) - skin; पाटयिष्ये (pāṭayiṣye) - I will tear; विविधैः (vividhaiḥ) - with various; कङ्कपत्रिभिः (kaṅka-patribhiḥ) - vulture feathers;]
(Having touched contacts of various kinds of skin, he indeed desires those. Therefore, with various vulture feathers, I will tear the skin.)

śrutvā vai vividhāñ śabdāṃs tān eva pratigṛdhyati। tasmāt śrotraṃ prati śarān pratimokṣyāmy ahaṃ śitān ॥14-30-18॥

(Having heard indeed various sounds, only those it desires; therefore, towards the ear I shall release sharp arrows.)

(Not these arrows will overcome me, Alarka, in any way; your own vital point they will pierce, then you will lose life.)
These arrows will not overcome me in any way, Alarka; rather, they will pierce your own vital point, and then you will lose your life. (14-30-19)
अन्यान्बाणान्समीक्षस्व यैस्त्वं मां सूदयिष्यसि। तच्छ्रुत्वा स विचिन्त्याथ ततो वचनमब्रवीत् ॥१४-३०-२०॥
anyān bāṇān samīkṣasva yais tvaṃ māṃ sūdayiṣyasi। tac chrutvā sa vicintyātha tato vacanam abravīt ॥14-30-20॥
[अन्यान् (anyān) - other; बाणान् (bāṇān) - arrows; समीक्षस्व (samīkṣasva) - examine; यैः (yaiḥ) - by which; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; माम् (mām) - me; सूदयिष्यसि (sūdayiṣyasi) - will destroy; तत् (tat) - that; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; स (sa) - he; विचिन्त्य (vicintya) - having considered; अथ (atha) - then; ततः (tataḥ) - thereupon; वचनम् (vacanam) - speech; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said;]
(Other arrows examine, by which you me will destroy. That having heard, he having considered then, thereupon, speech said.)
Examine other arrows by which you will destroy me. Upon hearing that and after considering, he then spoke these words. (14-30-20)

दृष्ट्वा वै विविधान्भावांस्तानेव प्रतिगृध्यति। तस्माच्चक्षुः प्रति शरान्प्रतिमोक्ष्याम्यहं शितान् ॥१४-३०-२१॥
dṛṣṭvā vai vividhānbhāvāṃstāneva pratigṛdhyati। tasmāccakṣuḥ prati śarān pratimokṣyāmyahaṃ śitān ॥14-30-21॥
[दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; वै (vai) - indeed; विविधान् (vividhān) - various; भावान् (bhāvān) - states; तान् (tān) - those; एव (eva) - only; प्रतिगृध्ध्यति (pratigṛdhyati) - covets; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; चक्षुः (cakṣuḥ) - the eye; प्रतिशरान् (prati śarān) - towards arrows; प्रति मोक्ष्यामि (pratimokṣyāmi) - I shall loosen; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; शितान् (śitān) - sharp;]
(Having seen indeed various states, it only covets those. Therefore, at the eye I shall loosen sharp arrows.)
After seeing indeed various moods, it only desires those; therefore, I will shoot sharp arrows at the eye. (14-30-21)
चक्षुरुवाच॥

नेमे बाणास्तरिष्यन्ति मामलर्क कथञ्चन। तवैव मर्म भेत्स्यन्ति भिन्नमर्मा मरिष्यसि ॥१४-३०-२२॥
neme bāṇās tariṣyanti mām alarka kathañcana. tavaiva marma bhetsyanti bhinna-marmā mariṣyasi ॥14-30-22॥
[न इमे (na ime) - not these; बाणाः (bāṇāḥ) - arrows; तारिष्यन्ति (tāriṣyanti) - will pierce; माम् (mām) - me; अलर्क (alarka) - O Alarka; कथञ्चन (kathañcana) - in any way; तव एव (tava eva) - your only; मर्म (marma) - vitals; भेत्स्यन्ति (bhetsyanti) - will pierce; भिन्नमर्मा (bhinna-marmā) - whose vitals are pierced; मर्ष्यसि (mariṣyasi) - you will die;]
(Not these arrows will pierce me, O Alarka, in any way. Your very vitals they will pierce; pierced in the vitals, you will die.)
O Alarka, these arrows will not pierce me in any way. Instead, they will pierce your own vitals, and with your vitals pierced, you will die. (14-30-22)

इयं निष्ठा बहुविधा प्रज्ञया त्वध्यवस्यति। तस्माद्बुद्धिं प्रति शरान्प्रतिमोक्ष्याम्यहं शितान् ॥१४-३०-२४॥
iyaṃ niṣṭhā bahuvidhā prajñayā tvadhyavasayati। tasmādbuddhiṃ prati śarānpratimokṣyāmyahaṃ śitān ॥14-30-24॥
[इयं (iyaṃ) - this; निष्ठा (niṣṭhā) - resolve; बहुविधा (bahuvidhā) - of many kinds; प्रज्ञया (prajñayā) - by wisdom; त्व (tv) - indeed; अध्यवस्यति (adhyavasayati) - determines; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; बुद्धिं (buddhiṃ) - the intellect; प्रति (prati) - towards; शरान् (śarān) - arrows; प्रतिमोक्ष्यामि (pratimokṣyāmi) - I will let loose; अहम् (aham) - I; शितान् (śitān) - sharp;]
(This resolve of many kinds is indeed determined by wisdom. Therefore, towards the intellect, I will let loose sharp arrows.)
This resolve, being of many kinds, is determined by wisdom. Therefore, I will shoot sharp arrows at the intellect. (14-30-24)
बुद्धिरुवाच॥

(Not these arrows will pierce me, Alarka, in any way; only your vital spot will they pierce. Having your vital parts pierced, you will die.)
These arrows will not pierce me in any way, Alarka; it is only your own vital points they will strike. With your vital parts pierced, you will die. (14-30-25)
पितर ऊचुः॥

The ancestors said.
ततोऽलर्कस्तपो घोरमास्थायाथ सुदुष्करम्। नाध्यगच्छत्परं शक्त्या बाणमेतेषु सप्तसु ॥ सुसमाहितचेतास्तु ततोऽचिन्तयत प्रभुः ॥१४-३०-२६॥
tato'lamakras tapo ghoram āsthāyātha suduṣkaram। nādhyagacchat paraṃ śaktyā bāṇam eteṣu saptasu॥ susamāhitacetāstu tato'cintayat prabhuḥ॥14-30-26॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अलर्कः (alarkaḥ) - Alarka; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; घोरम् (ghoram) - terrible; आस्थाय (āsthāya) - having undertaken; अथ (atha) - then; सुदुष्करम् (suduṣkaram) - very difficult; न (na) - not; अधिगच्छत् (adhigacchat) - he attained; परम् (param) - supreme; शक्त्या (śaktyā) - by power; बाणम् (bāṇam) - arrow; एतेषु (eteṣu) - among these; सप्तसु (saptasu) - seven; सुसमाहितचेताः (susamāhitacetāḥ) - with well composed mind; तु (tu) - but; ततः (tataḥ) - then; अचिन्तयत् (acintayat) - he considered; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - the master;]
(Then Alarka, having undertaken a terrible austerity, then (austerity) very difficult, (yet) did not attain the supreme arrow by power among these seven. With well composed mind, but then the master considered.)
Then Alarka undertook a terrible and very difficult austerity, but even by his power he did not attain the supreme arrow among these seven. However, with a well composed mind, the master then considered. (14-30-26)
स विचिन्त्य चिरं कालमलर्को द्विजसत्तम। नाध्यगच्छत्परं श्रेयो योगान्मतिमतां वरः ॥१४-३०-२७॥
sa vicintya ciraṃ kālam alarko dvijasattama। nādhyagacchat paraṃ śreyo yogāt matimatāṃ varaḥ ॥14-30-27॥
[स (sa) - he; विचिन्त्य (vicintya) - having considered; चिरं (ciraṃ) - for a long time; कालम् (kālam) - time; अलर्कः (alarkaḥ) - Alarka (proper noun); द्विजसत्तम (dvijasattama) - O best of twice-born; न (na) - not; अध्यगच्छत् (adhyagacchat) - he attained; परं (paraṃ) - supreme; श्रेयः (śreyaḥ) - good; योगात् (yogāt) - from yoga; मतिमतां (matimatām) - of the wise; वरः (varaḥ) - the best;]
(He, having considered for a long time, Alarka, O best of twice-born, did not attain the supreme good from yoga, the best among the wise.)
O best of the twice-born, Alarka, after much consideration for a long time, did not attain the highest good through yoga, though he was foremost among the wise. (14-30-27)
स एकाग्रं मनः कृत्वा निश्चलो योगमास्थितः। इन्द्रियाणि जघानाशु बाणेनैकेन वीर्यवान् ॥ योगेनात्मानमाविश्य संसिद्धिं परमां ययौ ॥१४-३०-२८॥
sa ekāgraṃ manaḥ kṛtvā niścalaḥ yogamāsthitaḥ। indriyāṇi jaghānāśu bāṇenaikena vīryavān॥ yogenātmānamāviśya saṃsiddhiṃ paramāṃ yayau॥14-30-28॥
[स (sa) - he; एकाग्रं (ekāgram) - one-pointed; मनः (manaḥ) - mind; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; निश्चलः (niścalaḥ) - steady; योगमास्थितः (yogam āsthitaḥ) - having taken up yoga; इन्द्रियाणि (indriyāṇi) - senses; जघान (jaghāna) - struck down; आशु (āśu) - swiftly; बाणेन (bāṇena) - with the arrow; एकेन (ekena) - with one; वीर्यवान् (vīryavān) - powerful; योगेन (yogena) - by yoga; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - self; आविश्य (āviśya) - having entered; संसिद्धिं (saṃsiddhim) - attainment; परमां (paramām) - supreme; ययौ (yayau) - he attained;]
(He, having made the mind one-pointed, steady, having taken up yoga, struck down the senses swiftly with the one arrow, powerful. By yoga, having entered (his) self, he attained the supreme attainment.)
He made his mind one-pointed and steady, established himself in yoga, and, powerful, quickly subdued his senses with a single arrow. By yoga, having entered his own self, he attained the highest perfection. (14-30-28)
विस्मितश्चापि राजर्षिरिमां गाथां जगाद ह। अहो कष्टं यदस्माभिः पूर्वं राज्यमनुष्ठितम् ॥ इति पश्चान्मया ज्ञातं योगान्नास्ति परं सुखम् ॥१४-३०-२९॥
vismitaś cāpi rājarṣir imāṃ gāthāṃ jagāda ha। aho kaṣṭaṃ yad asmābhiḥ pūrvaṃ rājyam anuṣṭhitam ॥ iti paścān mayā jñātaṃ yogān nāsti paraṃ sukham ॥14-30-29॥
[विस्मितः (vismitaḥ) - astonished; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - indeed; राजर्षिः (rājarṣiḥ) - royal sage; इमां (imām) - this; गाथां (gāthām) - verse; जगाद (jagāda) - spoke; ह (ha) - indeed; अहो (aho) - ah; कष्टं (kaṣṭam) - difficult; यत् (yat) - that; अस्माभिः (asmābhiḥ) - by us; पूर्वं (pūrvam) - previously; राज्यम् (rājyam) - kingdom; अनुष्ठितम् (anuṣṭhitam) - has been maintained; इति (iti) - thus; पश्चात् (paścāt) - afterwards; मया (mayā) - by me; ज्ञातम् (jñātam) - has been known; योगात् (yogāt) - from yoga; नास्ति (nāsti) - there is not; परम् (param) - higher; सुखम् (sukham) - happiness;]
(Astonished and indeed the royal sage spoke this verse: "Ah, difficult that by us previously the kingdom has been maintained." Thus, afterwards by me it has been known: from yoga there is not higher happiness. (14-30-29))
Astonished, the royal sage spoke this verse: "Ah, how difficult it was that we formerly maintained the kingdom." Thus, afterwards I understood that there is no greater happiness than that arising from yoga. (14-30-29)
इति त्वमपि जानीहि राम मा क्षत्रियाञ्जहि। तपो घोरमुपातिष्ठ ततः श्रेयोऽभिपत्स्यसे ॥१४-३०-३०॥
iti tvam api jānīhi rāma mā kṣatriyāñjahi. tapo ghoram upātiṣṭha tataḥ śreyo'bhipatsyase ॥14-30-30॥
[इति (iti) - thus; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अपि (api) - also; जानीहि (jānīhi) - know; राम (rāma) - Rāma; मा (mā) - do not; क्षत्रियान् (kṣatriyān) - (the) Kṣatriyas; जहि (jahi) - slay; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; घोरम् (ghoram) - severe; उपातिष्ठ (upātiṣṭha) - undertake; ततः (tataḥ) - then; श्रेयः (śreyaḥ) - the better (good); अभिपत्स्यसे (abhipatsyase) - you will attain;]
(Thus you also know, Rāma. Do not slay the Kṣatriyas. Severe austerity undertake; then the better (good) you will attain.)
Thus, you know also, Rāma. Do not kill the Kṣatriyas. Undertake severe austerities; then you will attain a greater good. (14-30-30)
ब्राह्मण उवाच॥

(The Brāhmaṇa said;)
The Brāhmaṇa said.
इत्युक्तः स तपो घोरं जामदग्न्यः पितामहैः। आस्थितः सुमहाभागो ययौ सिद्धिं च दुर्गमाम् ॥१४-३०-३१॥
ity uktaḥ sa tapo ghoraṃ jāmadagnyaḥ pitāmahaiḥ। āsthitaḥ sumahābhāgo yayau siddhiṃ ca durgamām ॥14-30-31॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - having been addressed; स (sa) - he; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; घोरम् (ghoram) - severe; जामदग्न्यः (jāmadagnyaḥ) - Jāmadagnya; पितामहैः (pitāmahaiḥ) - by the grandfathers; आस्थितः (āsthitaḥ) - having undertaken; सुमहाभागः (sumahābhāgaḥ) - the most fortunate; ययौ (yayau) - attained; सिद्धिम् (siddhim) - perfection; च (ca) - and; दुर्गमाम् (durgamām) - difficult to attain;]
(Thus having been addressed, he, Jāmadagnya, by the grandfathers, severe austerity having undertaken, the most fortunate attained perfection and (perfection) difficult to attain.)
Thus addressed by the grandfathers, the most fortunate Jāmadagnya undertook severe austerity and attained a perfection that is difficult to attain. (14-30-31)
