ब्राह्मण उवाच॥
brāhmaṇa uvāca॥

The Brāhmaṇa said.
नाहं तथा भीरु चरामि लोके; तथा त्वं मां तर्कयसे स्वबुद्ध्या। विप्रोऽस्मि मुक्तोऽस्मि वनेचरोऽस्मि; गृहस्थधर्मा ब्रह्मचारी तथास्मि ॥१४-३३-१॥
nāhaṃ tathā bhīru carāmi loke; tathā tvaṃ māṃ tarkayase svabuddhyā. vipro'smi mukto'smi vanecaro'smi; gṛhasthadharmā brahmacārī tathāsmi ॥14-33-1॥
[न (na) - not; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; तथा (tathā) - in that way; भीरु (bhīru) - fearful; चरामि (carāmi) - I behave; लोके (loke) - in the world; तथा (tathā) - in that way; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; मां (māṃ) - me; तर्कयसे (tarkayase) - judge; स्वबुद्ध्या (svabuddhyā) - with your own understanding; विप्रः (vipraḥ) - a Brāhmaṇa; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; मुक्तः (muktaḥ) - liberated; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; वनेचरः (vanecaraḥ) - forest-dweller; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; गृहस्थधर्मा (gṛhasthadharmā) - with householder's duties; ब्रह्मचारी (brahmacārī) - celibate; तथा (tathā) - also; अस्मि (asmi) - I am;]
(Not I in that way fearful behave in the world; in that way you me judge with your own understanding. Brāhmaṇa am I, liberated am I, forest-dweller am I; with householder's duties, celibate also am I. (14-33-1))
I do not act so fearfully in the world as you judge me to be with your own understanding. I am a Brāhmaṇa, I am liberated, I am a forest-dweller; I am one with the duties of a householder and also a celibate. (14-33-1)
नाहमस्मि यथा मां त्वं पश्यसे चक्षुषा शुभे। मया व्याप्तमिदं सर्वं यत्किञ्चिज्जगतीगतम् ॥१४-३३-२॥
nāham asmi yathā māṃ tvaṃ paśyase cakṣuṣā śubhe. mayā vyāptam idaṃ sarvaṃ yat kiñcid jagatīgatam ॥14-33-2॥
[न अहम् अस्मि (na aham asmi) - not I am; यथा (yathā) - as; मां (māṃ) - me; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; पश्यसे (paśyase) - see; चक्षुषा (cakṣuṣā) - with (the) eye; शुभे (śubhe) - O auspicious one; मया (mayā) - by me; व्याप्तम् (vyāptam) - pervaded; इदं (idaṃ) - this; सर्वं (sarvaṃ) - all; यत् (yat) - what; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - whatever; जगतीगतं (jagatīgatam) - present in the world;]
(I am not as you see me with (the) eye, O auspicious one. By me, all this, whatever is present in the world, is pervaded.)
O auspicious one, I am not as you see me with your eyes. All this, whatever exists in the world, is pervaded by me. (14-33-2)
ये केचिज्जन्तवो लोके जङ्गमाः स्थावराश्च ह। तेषां मामन्तकं विद्धि दारूणामिव पावकम् ॥१४-३३-३॥
ye kecijjantavo loke jaṅgamāḥ sthāvarāś ca ha। teṣāṃ mām antakaṃ viddhi dāruṇām iva pāvakām ॥14-33-3॥
[ये (ye) - whoever; केचित् (kecit) - some; जन्तवः (jantavaḥ) - living beings; लोके (loke) - in the world; जङ्गमाः (jaṅgamāḥ) - moving (beings); स्थावराः (sthāvarāḥ) - stationary (beings); च (ca) - and; ह (ha) - indeed; तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; माम् (mām) - me; अन्तकम् (antakam) - destroyer; विद्धि (viddhi) - know; दारूणाम् (dāruṇām) - of woods; इव (iva) - like; पावकम् (pāvakam) - fire;]
(Whoever some living beings in the world, moving and stationary indeed; of them, me, the destroyer, know, of woods like fire.)
Know me as the destroyer of all living beings, moving and stationary, in this world—just as fire is (the destroyer) of wood. (14-33-3)
राज्यं पृथिव्यां सर्वस्यामथ वापि त्रिविष्टपे। तथा बुद्धिरियं वेत्ति बुद्धिरेव धनं मम ॥१४-३३-४॥
rājyaṃ pṛthivyāṃ sarvasyām atha vāpi triviṣṭape. tathā buddhir iyaṃ vetti buddhir eva dhanaṃ mama ॥14-33-4॥
[राज्यम् (rājyam) - kingdom; पृथिव्याम् (pṛthivyām) - on the earth; सर्वस्याम् (sarvasyām) - entire; on all; अथ (atha) - or; then; वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - even; त्रिविष्टपे (triviṣṭape) - in heaven; (the third heaven); तथा (tathā) - thus; likewise; बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - intellect; इयम् (iyam) - this; वेत्ति (vetti) - knows; बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - intellect; एव (eva) - alone; indeed; धनम् (dhanam) - wealth; मम (mama) - my;]
(Kingdom on the earth, the entire (earth), or even in the heaven; thus, this intellect knows, intellect alone is wealth for me.)
Whether it is the kingdom over the whole earth or even in heaven—thus, this intellect knows that intellect alone is my wealth. (14-33-4)
एकः पन्था ब्राह्मणानां येन गच्छन्ति तद्विदः। गृहेषु वनवासेषु गुरुवासेषु भिक्षुषु ॥ लिङ्गैर्बहुभिरव्यग्रैरेका बुद्धिरुपास्यते ॥१४-३३-५॥
ekaḥ panthā brāhmaṇānāṃ yena gacchanti tad-vidaḥ। gṛheṣu vanavāseṣu guru-vāseṣu bhikṣuṣu॥ liṅgair bahubhir avyagrair ekā buddhir upāsyate॥14-33-5॥
[एकः (ekaḥ) (ekaḥ) - one; पन्था (panthā) (panthā) - path; ब्राह्मणानां (brāhmaṇānāṃ) (brāhmaṇānāṃ) - of the brāhmaṇas; येन (yena) (yena) - by which; गच्छन्ति (gacchanti) (gacchanti) - they go; तद्विदः (tad-vidaḥ) (tadvidaḥ) - those who know that; गृहेषु (gṛheṣu) (gṛheṣu) - in houses; वनवासेषु (vanavāseṣu) (vanavāseṣu) - in forest dwellings; गुरुवासेषु (guru-vāseṣu) (guruvāseṣu) - in the dwellings of the teacher; भिक्षुषु (bhikṣuṣu) (bhikṣuṣu) - among ascetics; लिङ्गैः (liṅgaiḥ) (liṅgaiḥ) - by characteristics; बहुभिः (bahubhiḥ) (bahubhiḥ) - by many; अव्यग्रैः (avyagraiḥ) (avyagraiḥ) - undisturbed; एका (ekā) (ekā) - one; बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) (buddhiḥ) - intellect; उपास्यते (upāsyate) (upāsyate) - is worshipped;]
(One path of the brāhmaṇas, by which those who know that go. In houses, in forest dwellings, in the dwellings of the teacher, among ascetics. By many undisturbed characteristics, one intellect is worshipped.)
There is one path for the brāhmaṇas by which the wise proceed—whether in houses, in forest retreats, in the dwellings of teachers, or among ascetics. Through many unperturbed characteristics, the one intellect is worshipped. (14-33-5)
नानालिङ्गाश्रमस्थानां येषां बुद्धिः शमात्मिका। ते भावमेकमायान्ति सरितः सागरं यथा ॥१४-३३-६॥
nānāliṅgāśramasthānāṃ yeṣāṃ buddhiḥ śamātmikā| te bhāvamekam āyānti saritaḥ sāgaraṃ yathā ॥14-33-6॥
[नाना-लिङ्ग-आश्रम-स्थानाम् (nānā-liṅga-āśrama-sthānām) - of various marks, stages of life, and places; येषाम् (yeṣām) - of whom; बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - intellect; शम-आत्मिका (śama-ātmikā) - of the nature of tranquility; ते (te) - they; भावम् (bhāvam) - state; एकम् (ekam) - one; आयान्ति (āyānti) - attain; सरितः (saritaḥ) - rivers; सागरम् (sāgaram) - ocean; यथा (yathā) - just as;]
(Of various marks, stages of life, and places, of whom the intellect is of the nature of tranquility, they one state attain, as rivers (attain) the ocean.)
Those whose minds are tranquil, regardless of their different marks, stages of life, and places, attain the same state, just as rivers reach the ocean. (14-33-6)
बुद्ध्यायं गम्यते मार्गः शरीरेण न गम्यते। आद्यन्तवन्ति कर्माणि शरीरं कर्मबन्धनम् ॥१४-३३-७॥
buddhyāyaṃ gamyate mārgaḥ śarīreṇa na gamyate। ādyantavanti karmāṇi śarīraṃ karmabandhanam ॥14-33-7॥
[बुद्ध्या (buddhyā) - by intellect; अयम् (ayam) - this; गम्यते (gamyate) - is approached; मार्गः (mārgaḥ) - path; शरीरेण (śarīreṇa) - by body; न (na) - not; गम्यते (gamyate) - is approached; आद्यन्तवन्ति (ādyantavanti) - having beginning and end; कर्माणि (karmāṇi) - actions; शरीरम् (śarīram) - body; कर्मबन्धनम् (karmabandhanam) - bondage of action;]
(By intellect, this path is approached; by body, it is not approached. Actions have beginning and end; the body is the bondage of action.)
This path is approached by the intellect, not by the body. Actions have beginning and end; the body is the bondage of action. (14-33-7)
तस्मात्ते सुभगे नास्ति परलोककृतं भयम्। मद्भावभावनिरता ममैवात्मानमेष्यसि ॥१४-३३-८॥
tasmātte subhage nāsti paralokakṛtaṃ bhayam। madbhāvabhāvaniratā mamaiva ātmānam eṣyasi ॥14-33-8॥
[तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; ते (te) - for you; सुभगे (subhage) - O fortunate one; नास्ति (nāsti) - there is not; परलोककृतं (paralokakṛtam) - done in another world; pertaining to afterlife; भयम् (bhayam) - fear; मद्भावभावनिरता (madbhāvabhāvanirata) - engaged in the contemplation of my nature; मम (mama) - my; एव (eva) - alone; indeed; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - self; एष्यसि (eṣyasi) - you will attain;]
(Therefore, for you, O fortunate one, there is not fear done in another world. Engaged in the contemplation of my nature, you will attain indeed my very self.)
Therefore, O fortunate one, you need not fear what is done in another world. Being devoted to the contemplation of my true nature, you will surely attain my very self. (14-33-8)
