Mahabharata - Ashvamedhika Parva (महाभारत - अश्वमेधिकपर्वम्)
14.033
The Brāhmaṇa said.
I do not act so fearfully in the world as you judge me to be with your own understanding. I am a Brāhmaṇa, I am liberated, I am a forest-dweller; I am one with the duties of a householder and also a celibate. (14-33-1)
O auspicious one, I am not as you see me with your eyes. All this, whatever exists in the world, is pervaded by me. (14-33-2)
Know me as the destroyer of all living beings, moving and stationary, in this world—just as fire is (the destroyer) of wood. (14-33-3)
Whether it is the kingdom over the whole earth or even in heaven—thus, this intellect knows that intellect alone is my wealth. (14-33-4)
There is one path for the brāhmaṇas by which the wise proceed—whether in houses, in forest retreats, in the dwellings of teachers, or among ascetics. Through many unperturbed characteristics, the one intellect is worshipped. (14-33-5)
Those whose minds are tranquil, regardless of their different marks, stages of life, and places, attain the same state, just as rivers reach the ocean. (14-33-6)
This path is approached by the intellect, not by the body. Actions have beginning and end; the body is the bondage of action. (14-33-7)
Therefore, O fortunate one, you need not fear what is done in another world. Being devoted to the contemplation of my true nature, you will surely attain my very self. (14-33-8)
