ko'sau nakula-rūpeṇa śirasā kāñcanena vai। prāha mānuṣa-vad-vācam etat-pṛṣṭaḥ vadasva me॥14-96-1॥

etat pūrvaṁ na pṛṣṭo'ham na cāsmābhiḥ prabhāṣitam। śrūyatāṁ nakulo yo'sau yathā vāgasya mānuṣī ॥14-96-2॥

श्राद्धं सङ्कल्पयामास जमदग्निः पुरा किल। होमधेनुस्तमागाच्च स्वयं चापि दुदोह ताम् ॥१४-९६-३॥
śrāddhaṃ saṅkalpayāmāsa jamadagniḥ purā kila। homadhenus tam āgāc ca svayaṃ cāpi dudoha tām ॥14-96-3॥

तत्क्षीरं स्थापयामास नवे भाण्डे दृढे शुचौ। तच्च क्रोधः स्वरूपेण पिठरं पर्यवर्तयत् ॥१४-९६-४॥
tat-kṣīraṃ sthāpayāmāsa nave bhāṇḍe dṛḍhe śucau। tacca krodhaḥ svarūpeṇa piṭharaṃ paryavartayat ॥14-96-4॥

jijñāsus tam ṛṣiśreṣṭhaṃ kiṃ kuryād vipriye kṛte. iti sañcintya durmedhā dharṣayāmāsa tat payaḥ ॥14-96-5॥
[जिज्ञासुः (jijñāsuḥ) - the one desiring to know; तम् (tam) - him; ऋषिश्रेष्ठम् (ṛṣiśreṣṭham) - the best among sages; किम् (kim) - what; कुर्यात् (kuryāt) - should do; विप्रिये (vipriye) - when disliked; कृते (kṛte) - being done; इति (iti) - thus; सञ्चिन्त्य (sañcintya) - having considered; दुर्मेधा (durmedhā) - the one of evil understanding; धर्षयामास (dharṣayāmāsa) - overcame; तत् (tat) - that; पयः (payaḥ) - the milk;]
(The one desiring to know, pondering "What should the best among sages do when something unpleasant is done?", thus having considered, the one of evil understanding overpowered that milk.)
The inquisitive person thought, "What should the greatest sage do when something displeasing has occurred?" With this in mind, the wicked-minded one forcibly took that milk. (14-96-5)
तमाज्ञाय मुनिः क्रोधं नैवास्य चुकुपे ततः। स तु क्रोधस्तमाहेदं प्राञ्जलिर्मूर्तिमान्स्थितः ॥१४-९६-६॥
tamājñāya muniḥ krodhaṃ naivāsya cukupe tataḥ। sa tu krodhas tamāhedaṃ prāñjalir mūrtimān sthitaḥ॥14-96-6॥
[तम् (tam) - him; आज्ञाय (ājñāya) - after knowing; मुनिः (muniḥ) - the sage; क्रोधं (krodham) - anger; नैव (na eva) - not at all; अस्य (asya) - of him; चुकुपे (cukupe) - became angry; ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; स (sa) - he; तु (tu) - but; क्रोधः (krodhaḥ) - Anger (personified); तम् (tam) - to him; आह (āha) - said; इदम् (idam) - this; प्राञ्जलिः (prāñjaliḥ) - with folded hands; मूर्तिमान् (mūrtimān) - embodied; स्थितः (sthitaḥ) - standing;]
(Having known him, the sage at anger not at all of him became angry thereafter. He but Anger to him said this, with folded hands, embodied, standing.)
Having recognized him, the sage did not become angry at him then. But Anger, embodied and with folded hands, stood and addressed him thus. (14-96-6)
जितोऽस्मीति भृगुश्रेष्ठ भृगवो ह्यतिरोषणाः। लोके मिथ्याप्रवादोऽयं यत्त्वयास्मि पराजितः ॥१४-९६-७॥
jito'smīti bhṛguśreṣṭha bhṛgavo hyatiroṣaṇāḥ। loke mithyāpravādo'yaṃ yattvayāsmi parājitaḥ॥14-96-7॥
[जितः अस्मि इति (jitaḥ asmi iti) - conquered am I thus; भृगुश्रेष्ठ (bhṛguśreṣṭha) - O best of Bhṛgus; भृगवः (bhṛgavaḥ) - descendants of Bhṛgu; हि (hi) - indeed; अति-रोषणाः (ati-roṣaṇāḥ) - extremely angry ones; लोके (loke) - in the world; मिथ्या-प्रवादः (mithyā-pravādaḥ) - false rumor; अयम् (ayam) - this; यत् (yat) - that; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; अस्मि (asmi) - am I; पराजितः (parājitaḥ) - defeated;]
("Conquered am I," thus, O best of Bhṛgus, the descendants of Bhṛgu indeed (are) extremely angry ones; in the world, this (is) a false rumor that by you am I defeated.)
O foremost Bhṛgu, the Bhṛgus—being extremely angry—take it as a false rumor in the world that I have been conquered by you. (14-96-7)
सोऽहं त्वयि स्थितो ह्यद्य क्षमावति महात्मनि। बिभेमि तपसः साधो प्रसादं कुरु मे विभो ॥१४-९६-८॥
so'ham tvayi sthito hyadya kṣamāvati mahātmani. bibhemi tapasaḥ sādho prasādaṃ kuru me vibho ॥14-96-8॥

(He I indeed today situated in you, in the patient great-souled one; I fear austerity, O saint; grant grace to me, O mighty one;)
Today, I am situated in you, the patient and great-souled one; O saint, I fear austerity. O mighty one, please grant me your grace. (14-96-8)

साक्षाद्दृष्टोऽसि मे क्रोध गच्छ त्वं विगतज्वरः। न ममापकृतं तेऽद्य न मन्युर्विद्यते मम ॥१४-९६-९॥
sākṣāddṛṣṭo'si me krodha gaccha tvaṃ vigatajvaraḥ। na mamāpakṛtaṃ te'dya na manyurvidyate mama ॥14-96-9॥
[साक्षात् (sākṣāt) - directly; दृष्टः (dṛṣṭaḥ) - seen; असि (asi) - you are; मे (me) - by me; क्रोध (krodha) - anger; गच्छ (gaccha) - go; त्वम् (tvam) - you; विगतज्वरः (vigatajvaraḥ) - one whose agitation has ceased; न (na) - not; मम (mama) - my; अपकृतम् (apakṛtam) - wrong; ते (te) - by you; अद्य (adya) - today; न (na) - not; मन्युः (manyuḥ) - resentment; विद्यते (vidyate) - is; मम (mama) - in me;]
(Directly seen are you by me, anger, go you whose agitation has ceased. Not my wrong by you today; not resentment is in me.)
I have seen you directly, O Anger; depart, you whose agitation has ceased. There is no offence of mine towards you today; I do not harbor resentment. (14-96-9)
यानुद्दिश्य तु सङ्कल्पः पयसोऽस्य कृतो मया। पितरस्ते महाभागास्तेभ्यो बुध्यस्व गम्यताम् ॥१४-९६-१०॥
yānuddiśya tu saṅkalpaḥ payaso'sya kṛto mayā. pitaraste mahābhāgāstebhyo budhyasva gamyatām ॥14-96-10॥
[यानुद्दिश्य (yānuddiśya) - having in mind whom; having dedicated (this) to whom; तु (tu) - but; indeed; सङ्कल्पः (saṅkalpaḥ) - mental resolve; intention; पयसोऽस्य (payaso'sya) - of this water; कृतः (kṛtaḥ) - has been made; done; मया (mayā) - by me; पितरः (pitaraḥ) - ancestors; fathers; ते (te) - your; these; महाभागाः (mahābhāgāḥ) - highly fortunate; greatly blessed; तेभ्यः (tebhyaḥ) - to them; बुध्यस्व (budhyasva) - know; understand; गम्यताम् (gamyatām) - let (it) be gone; let (it) reach (them);]
(Having in mind whom, indeed, the intention regarding this water has been made by me; the ancestors of yours, greatly blessed, to them, know, let it go.)
Know that the resolve regarding this water was made by me for your most fortunate ancestors; let it go to them. (14-96-10)
इत्युक्तो जातसन्त्रासः स तत्रान्तरधीयत। पितॄणामभिषङ्गात्तु नकुलत्वमुपागतः ॥१४-९६-११॥
ity-ukto jāta-santrāsaḥ sa tatra antaradhīyata. pitṝṇām-abhiṣaṅgāt tu nakulatvam-upāgataḥ ॥14-96-11॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - having been spoken (to); जात (jāta) - arisen; सन्त्रासः (santrāsaḥ) - fear; सः (saḥ) - he; तत्र (tatra) - there; अन्तरधीयत (antaradhīyata) - vanished; पितॄणाम् (pitṝṇām) - of the ancestors; अभिषङ्गात् (abhiṣaṅgāt) - from close contact; तु (tu) - however; नकुलत्वम् (nakulatvam) - mangustaas-hood (the state of being a mongoose); उपागतः (upāgataḥ) - attained;]
(Thus addressed, fear having arisen, he there vanished. However, from close contact with the ancestors, he attained the state of being a mongoose.)
Having been thus addressed and stricken with fear, he vanished there; however, by his contact with the ancestors, he attained the form of a mongoose. (14-96-11)
स तान्प्रसादयामास शापस्यान्तो भवेदिति। तैश्चाप्युक्तो यदा धर्मं क्षेप्स्यसे मोक्ष्यसे तदा ॥१४-९६-१२॥
sa tān prasādayāmāsa śāpasya-anto bhaved-iti. taiś ca api uktaḥ yadā dharmaṃ kṣepsyase mokṣyase tadā ॥14-96-12॥
[स (sa) - he; तान् (tān) - them; प्रसादयामास (prasādayāmāsa) - appeased; शापस्य (śāpasya) - of the curse; अन्तः (antaḥ) - end; भवेत् (bhavet) - might be; इति (iti) - thus; तैः (taiḥ) - by them; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - was told; यदा (yadā) - when; धर्मम् (dharmaṃ) - dharma; क्षेप्स्यसे (kṣepsyase) - you will cast aside; मोक्ष्यसे (mokṣyase) - you will be freed; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(He them appeased, of the curse end might be thus. By them also was told, when dharma you will cast aside, you will be freed then.)
He appeased them so that the curse might end. And he was told by them, "When you cast aside dharma, then you will be freed." (14-96-12)
तैश्चोक्तो यज्ञियान्देशान्धर्मारण्यानि चैव ह। जुगुप्सन्परिधावन्स यज्ञं तं समुपासदत् ॥१४-९६-१३॥
taiś cokto yajñiyān deśān dharmāraṇyāni caiva ha. jugupsan paridhāvann yajñaṃ taṃ samupāsadat ॥14-96-13॥
[तैः (taiḥ) - by them; च (ca) - and; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - spoken (to him); यज्ञियान् (yajñiyān) - (the) sacrificial; देशान् (deśān) - places; धर्मारण्यानि (dharmāraṇyāni) - holy forests; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; ह (ha) - certainly; जुगुप्सन् (jugupsan) - shunning; परिधावन् (paridhāvann) - running about; यज्ञम् (yajñam) - sacrifice; तम् (tam) - that; समुपासदत् (samupāsadat) - he approached;]
(By them and (it was) spoken: (the) sacrificial places, the holy forests also indeed. Shunning, running about, he approached that sacrifice.)
At their instruction, he avoided the sacrificial places and holy forests, but while shunning and circling, he eventually approached that very sacrifice. (14-96-13)
धर्मपुत्रमथाक्षिप्य सक्तुप्रस्थेन तेन सः। मुक्तः शापात्ततः क्रोधो धर्मो ह्यासीद्युधिष्ठिरः ॥१४-९६-१४॥
dharmaputram athākṣipya saktuprasthena tena saḥ। muktaḥ śāpāt tataḥ krodho dharmo hy āsīd yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ॥14-96-14॥
[धर्मपुत्रम् (dharmaputram) - Dharmaputra; (Yudhishthira, son of Dharma); अथ (atha) - then; thereafter; आक्षिप्य (ākṣipya) - having hurled; having thrown; सक्तुप्रस्थेन (saktuprasthena) - with a prastha (measure) of saktu (parched flour); तेन (tena) - by him; with that; सः (saḥ) - he; मुक्तः (muktaḥ) - released; freed; शापात् (śāpāt) - from curse; ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; after that; क्रोधः (krodhaḥ) - anger; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - Dharma; (here as Yudhishthira or personified Dharma); हि (hi) - indeed; surely; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira;]
(Dharmaputra then having hurled with a prastha of saktu by him, he was released from curse; thereafter, anger, Dharma indeed was Yudhishthira.)
Then, when Dharmaputra (Yudhishthira) was struck with a prastha of saktu by him, he was released from the curse; thereafter, the anger of Dharma indeed became Yudhishthira. (14-96-14)
एवमेतत्तदा वृत्तं तस्य यज्ञे महात्मनः। पश्यतां चापि नस्तत्र नकुलोऽन्तर्हितस्तदा ॥१४-९६-१५॥
evametattadā vṛttaṃ tasya yajñe mahātmanaḥ। paśyatāṃ cāpi nastatra nakulo'ntarhitastadā ॥14-96-15॥
