धर्मागतेन त्यागेन भगवन्सर्वमस्ति चेत्। एतन्मे सर्वमाचक्ष्व कुशलो ह्यसि भाषितुम् ॥१४-९५-१॥
dharmāgatena tyāgena bhagavan sarvam asti cet। etan me sarvam ācakṣva kuśalaḥ hi asi bhāṣitum ॥14-95-1॥
[धर्मागतेन (dharmāgatena) - by that which has reached to dharma; त्यागेन (tyāgena) - by renunciation; भगवन् (bhagavan) - O venerable one; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; अस्ति (asti) - exists; चेत् (cet) - if; एतत् (etat) - this; मे (me) - to me; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; आचक्ष्व (ācakṣva) - declare; कुशलः (kuśalaḥ) - skilled; हि (hi) - indeed; असि (asi) - thou art; भाषितुम् (bhāṣitum) - to speak;]
(By that which has reached dharma, by renunciation, O venerable one, if all exists, this all declare to me, for thou art indeed skilled to speak.)
O venerable one, if by renunciation that accords with dharma all exists, declare all this to me, for you are indeed skilled in speaking. (14-95-1)
ततोञ्छवृत्तेर्यद्वृत्तं सक्तुदाने फलं महत्। कथितं मे महद्ब्रह्मंस्तथ्यमेतदसंशयम् ॥१४-९५-२॥
tatoñchavṛtter yad vṛttaṃ saktudāne phalaṃ mahat। kathitaṃ me mahad brahman satyam etad asaṃśayam ॥14-95-2॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - from that; then; अञ्छवृत्तेः (añchavṛtteḥ) - of the conduct of begging; of the practice of eating alms; यत् (yat) - which; that which; वृत्तम् (vṛttam) - practice; conduct; सक्तुदाने (saktudāne) - in the giving of saktu (parched grain); फलम् (phalam) - fruit; result; महत् (mahat) - great; कथितम् (kathitam) - has been told; described; मे (me) - to me; by me; महद् (mahad) - great; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O brāhmaṇa; सत्यं (satyam) - true; एतत् (etat) - this; असंशयम् (asaṃśayam) - without doubt;]
(Then, of the conduct of begging, that which (has been) practiced, (in) giving of saktu, the fruit is great; has been told to me, O brāhmaṇa, great, this is true, without doubt.)
Then, regarding the conduct of begging, whatever is practiced in the giving of saktu, its result is great; this has been told to me, O brāhmaṇa—this is certainly true and there is no doubt about it. (14-95-2)
कथं हि सर्वयज्ञेषु निश्चयः परमो भवेत्। एतदर्हसि मे वक्तुं निखिलेन द्विजर्षभ ॥१४-९५-३॥
kathaṁ hi sarvayajñeṣu niścayaḥ paramo bhavet। etadarhasi me vaktuṁ nikhilena dvijarṣabha॥14-95-3॥
[कथं (kathaṁ) - how; हि (hi) - indeed; सर्वयज्ञेषु (sarvayajñeṣu) - in all sacrifices; निश्चयः (niścayaḥ) - certainty; परमः (paramaḥ) - supreme; भवेत् (bhavet) - would be; एतत् (etat) - this; अर्हसि (arhasi) - (you) are fit; मे (me) - to me; वक्तुम् (vaktum) - to speak; निखिलेन (nikhilena) - completely; द्विजर्षभ (dvijarṣabha) - O best of twice-born;]
(How indeed in all sacrifices the supreme certainty would be, this you are fit to speak to me completely, O best of twice-born.)
O best of twice-born, please tell me completely how supreme certainty can be established in all sacrifices. (14-95-3)

atrāpyudāharantīmam itihāsaṃ purātanam। agastyasya mahāyajñe purāvṛttam ariṃdama ॥14-95-4॥

पुरागस्त्यो महातेजा दीक्षां द्वादशवार्षिकीम्। प्रविवेश महाराज सर्वभूतहिते रतः ॥१४-९५-५॥
purāgastyo mahātejā dīkṣāṁ dvādaśavārṣikīm। praviveśa mahārāja sarvabhūtahite rataḥ ॥14-95-5॥

तत्राग्निकल्पा होतार आसन्सत्रे महात्मनः। मूलाहारा निराहाराः साश्मकुट्टा मरीचिपाः ॥१४-९५-६॥
tatrāgnikalpā hotāra āsansatre mahātmanaḥ. mūlāhārā nirāhārāḥ sāśmakuṭṭā marīcipāḥ ॥14-95-6॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; अग्निकल्पाः (agnikalpāḥ) - like fire; होतारः (hotāraḥ) - sacrificial priests; आसन् (āsan) - were; सत्रे (satre) - in the sacrifice; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - great-souled; मूलाहाराः (mūlāhārāḥ) - root-eaters; निराहाराः (nirāhārāḥ) - abstaining from food; साश्मकुट्टाः (sāśmakuṭṭāḥ) - eating with pebbles; मारीचिपाः (marīcipāḥ) - subsisting on sunrays;]
(There, like fire, sacrificial priests were in the sacrifice, great-souled. Root-eaters, abstaining from food, eating with pebbles, subsisting on sunrays.)
There in that sacrifice were great-souled priests like fire: some ate only roots, some abstained from all food, some ate even pebbles, and some subsisted on sunrays. (14-95-6)
परिघृष्टिका वैघसिकाः सम्प्रक्षालास्तथैव च। यतयो भिक्षवश्चात्र बभूवुः पर्यवस्थिताः ॥१४-९५-७॥
parighṛṣṭikā vaighasikāḥ samprakṣālās tathaiva ca। yatayo bhikṣavaś cātra babhūvuḥ paryavasthitāḥ ॥14-95-7॥
[परिघृष्टिका (parighṛṣṭikā) - those who scrape (utensils, etc.); वैघसिकाः (vaighasikāḥ) - collectors of remnants (from sacrifices); सम्प्रक्षालाः (samprakṣālāḥ) - those who wash clean (e.g., prepare vessels); तथैव (tathaiva) - just so; similarly; च (ca) - and; यतयः (yatayaḥ) - ascetics; भिक्षवः (bhikṣavaḥ) - mendicants; beggars; च (ca) - and; अत्र (atra) - here; बभूवुः (babhūvuḥ) - became; were present; पर्यवस्थिताः (paryavasthitāḥ) - assembled; stationed;]
(Those who scrape (parighṛṣṭikā), collectors of remnants (vaighasikāḥ), those who wash clean (samprakṣālāḥ), just so (tathaiva) and (ca), ascetics (yatayaḥ), mendicants (bhikṣavaḥ) and (ca), here (atra), became (babhūvuḥ), assembled (paryavasthitāḥ).)
Here, those who scrape, collectors of remnants, those who wash clean, as well as ascetics and mendicants, were assembled. (14-95-7)
सर्वे प्रत्यक्षधर्माणो जितक्रोधा जितेन्द्रियाः। दमे स्थिताश्च ते सर्वे दम्भमोहविवर्जिताः ॥१४-९५-८॥
sarve pratyakṣadharmāṇo jitakrodhā jitendriyāḥ। dame sthitāś ca te sarve dambhamohavivarjitāḥ॥14-95-8॥
[सर्वे (sarve) - all; प्रत्यक्षधर्माणः (pratyakṣadharmāṇaḥ) - of obvious righteous conduct; जितक्रोधाः (jitakrodhāḥ) - who have conquered anger; जितेन्द्रियाः (jitendriyāḥ) - who have conquered the senses; दमे (dame) - in self-restraint; स्थिताः (sthitāḥ) - established; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - they; सर्वे (sarve) - all; दम्भमोहविवर्जिताः (dambhamohavivarjitāḥ) - devoid of hypocrisy and delusion;]
(All, of obvious righteous conduct, who have conquered anger, who have conquered the senses, in self-restraint established, and they all, devoid of hypocrisy and delusion.)
All of them, possessing manifest righteous conduct, having conquered anger and their senses, established in self-restraint, are entirely free from hypocrisy and delusion. (14-95-8)
वृत्ते शुद्धे स्थिता नित्यमिन्द्रियैश्चाप्यवाहिताः। उपासते स्म तं यज्ञं भुञ्जानास्ते महर्षयः ॥१४-९५-९॥
vṛtte śuddhe sthitā nityam indriyaiś cāpy avāhitāḥ। upāsate sma taṃ yajñaṃ bhuñjānās te maharṣayaḥ॥14-95-9॥
[वृत्ते (vṛtte) - in conduct; शुद्धे (śuddhe) - pure; स्थिता (sthitāḥ) - situated; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; इन्द्रियैः (indriyaiḥ) - with senses; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अवाहिताः (avāhitāḥ) - restrained; उपासते (upāsate) - worshipped; स्म (sma) - indeed; तम् (tam) - that; यज्ञम् (yajñaṃ) - sacrifice; भुञ्जानाः (bhuñjānāḥ) - enjoying; ते (te) - they; महर्षयः (maharṣayaḥ) - great sages;]
(Always situated in pure conduct, and also restrained with senses, they—the great sages—indeed worshipped that sacrifice, enjoying (it).)
The great sages, always established in pure conduct and with their senses restrained, worshipped that sacrifice and partook of it. (14-95-9)
यथाशक्त्या भगवता तदन्नं समुपार्जितम्। तस्मिन्सत्रे तु यत्किञ्चिदयोग्यं तत्र नाभवत् ॥ तथा ह्यनेकैर्मुनिभिर्महान्तः क्रतवः कृताः ॥१४-९५-१०॥
yathāśaktyā bhagavatā tad annaṁ samupārjitam। tasmin satre tu yat kiñcid ayogyaṁ tatra nābhavat॥ tathā hy anekair munibhir mahāntaḥ kratavaḥ kṛtāḥ॥14-95-10॥
[यथाशक्त्या (yathāśaktyā) - according to capacity; भगवता (bhagavatā) - by the revered one; तदन्नं (tad annaṁ) - that food; समुपार्जितम् (samupārjitam) - was duly acquired; तस्मिन्सत्रे (tasmin satre) - in that sacrificial session; तु (tu) - but; यत्किञ्चिदयोग्यं (yat kiñcid ayogyam) - whatever unsuitable (thing); तत्र (tatra) - there; नाभवत् (nābhavat) - did not exist; तथा (tathā) - thus; हि (hi) - indeed; अनेकैः (anekaiḥ) - by many; मुनिभिः (munibhiḥ) - by sages; महान्तः (mahāntaḥ) - great; क्रतवः (kratavaḥ) - sacrifices; कृताः (kṛtāḥ) - were performed;]
(According to capacity, by the revered one, that food was duly acquired. In that sacrificial session, but, whatever unsuitable (thing), there, did not exist. Thus, indeed, by many sages, great sacrifices were performed. (14-95-10))
That food was acquired by the revered one according to his capacity. In that sacrificial session, there was nothing at all unsuitable. For thus, many great sacrifices were performed by the sages. (14-95-10)
एवंविधेस्त्वगस्त्यस्य वर्तमाने महाध्वरे। न ववर्ष सहस्राक्षस्तदा भरतसत्तम ॥१४-९५-११॥
evaṃvidhe stv agastyasya vartamāne mahādhvare। na vavarṣa sahasrākṣas tadā bharatasattama ॥14-95-11॥
[एवंविधे (evaṃvidhe) - of such kind; such-natured; त् (t) - but; अगस्त्यस्य (agastyasya) - of Agastya; वर्तमाने (vartamāne) - being present; existing; महाध्वरे (mahādhvare) - in the great sacrifice; न (na) - not; ववर्ष (vavarṣa) - rained; सहस्राक्षः (sahasrākṣaḥ) - the thousand-eyed (Indra); तदा (tadā) - then; भरतसत्तम (bharatasattama) - O best of the Bharatas;]
(Of such kind, but of Agastya, being present in the great sacrifice, not rained the thousand-eyed (Indra), then, O best of the Bharatas.)
O best of the Bharatas, when such a one as Agastya was present at the great sacrifice, the thousand-eyed Indra did not cause rain at that time. (14-95-11)
ततः कर्मान्तरे राजन्नगस्त्यस्य महात्मनः। कथेयमभिनिर्वृत्ता मुनीनां भावितात्मनाम् ॥१४-९५-१२॥
tataḥ karmāntare rājann agastyasya mahātmanaḥ। katheyam abhinirvṛttā munīnāṃ bhāvitātmanām ॥14-95-12॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; कर्मान्तरे (karmāntare) - during another act; राजन् (rājan) - O king; अगस्त्यस्य (agastyasya) - of Agastya; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - high-souled; कथा (kathā) - story; इयम् (iyam) - this; अभिनिर्वृत्ता (abhinirvṛttā) - happened; मुनीनाम् (munīnām) - of the sages; भावितात्मनाम् (bhāvitātmanām) - whose minds are purified;]
(Then, during another act, O king, of Agastya the high-souled, this story happened, of the sages whose minds are purified.)
Then, O king, during another occasion related to the great-souled Agastya, this story occurred among those sages whose minds have been purified. (14-95-12)
अगस्त्यो यजमानोऽसौ ददात्यन्नं विमत्सरः। न च वर्षति पर्जन्यः कथमन्नं भविष्यति ॥१४-९५-१३॥
agastyo yajamāno'sau dadāty annaṃ vimatsaraḥ. na ca varṣati parjanyaḥ katham annaṃ bhaviṣyati ॥14-95-13॥
[अगस्त्यः (agastyaḥ) - Agastya (the name of a sage); यजमानः (yajamānaḥ) - the sacrificer; असौ (asau) - this (he); ददाति (dadāti) - gives; अन्नं (annaṃ) - food; विमत्सरः (vimatsaraḥ) - without envy; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; वर्षति (varṣati) - rains; पर्जन्यः (parjanyaḥ) - the rain-cloud (Parjanya); कथम् (katham) - how; अन्नं (annaṃ) - food; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be (can be, will exist);]
(Agastya the sacrificer, this (he), gives food, without envy. Not and rains the rain-cloud, how food will exist?)
This Agastya, the sacrificer, gives food without envy. But if the rain-cloud does not rain, how will there be food? (14-95-13)
सत्रं चेदं महद्विप्रा मुनेर्द्वादशवार्षिकम्। न वर्षिष्यति देवश्च वर्षाण्येतानि द्वादश ॥१४-९५-१४॥
satram cedaṁ mahadviprā muner dvādaśavārṣikam। na varṣiṣyati devaś ca varṣāṇy etāni dvādaśa ॥14-95-14॥
[सत्रम् (satram) - sacrificial session; च (ca) - and; इदं (idaṁ) - this; महत् (mahat) - great; विप्राः (viprāḥ) - O brāhmans; मुनेः (muneḥ) - of the sage; द्वादशवार्षिकम् (dvādaśavārṣikam) - lasting twelve years; न (na) - not; वर्षिष्यति (varṣiṣyati) - will rain; देवः (devaḥ) - the god; च (ca) - and; वर्षाणि (varṣāṇi) - years; एतानि (etāni) - these; द्वादश (dvādaśa) - twelve;]
(The sacrificial session, O brāhmans, this great, of the sage, lasting twelve years; not will rain the god, and these years twelve.)
O brāhmans, this great sacrificial session of the sage will last twelve years; and for these twelve years the god (Indra) will not send rain. (14-95-14)
एतद्भवन्तः सञ्चिन्त्य महर्षेरस्य धीमतः। अगस्त्यस्यातितपसः कर्तुमर्हन्त्यनुग्रहम् ॥१४-९५-१५॥
etad bhavantaḥ sañcintya maharṣer asya dhīmataḥ। agastyasya atitapasaḥ kartum arhanti anugraham॥14-95-15॥
[एतद् (etad) - this; भवन्तः (bhavantaḥ) - you all; सञ्चिन्त्य (sañcintya) - having considered; महर्षेः (maharṣeḥ) - of the great Ṛṣi; अस्य (asya) - of him; धीमतः (dhīmataḥ) - intelligent; अगस्त्यस्य (agastyasya) - of Agastya; अतितपसः (atitapasaḥ) - of great austerity; कर्तुम् (kartum) - to do; अर्हन्ति (arhanti) - are worthy; अनुग्रहम् (anugraham) - favor;]
(This, you all, having considered, of the great Ṛṣi, of him, intelligent, of Agastya, of great austerity, to do, are worthy, favor.)
Having considered this, you all are worthy to bestow favor on this great and intelligent Ṛṣi Agastya, who is of extreme austerity. (14-95-15)
इत्येवमुक्ते वचने ततोऽगस्त्यः प्रतापवान्। प्रोवाचेदं वचो वाग्मी प्रसाद्य शिरसा मुनीन् ॥१४-९५-१६॥
ityevam-ukte vacane tato'gastyaḥ pratāpavān। provācedaṃ vaco vāgmī prasādya śirasā munīn ॥14-95-16॥
[इति एवम् उक्ते (iti evam ukte) - thus, in this manner, having been spoken; वचने (vacane) - in the speech; ततः (tataḥ) - then; अगस्त्यः (agastyaḥ) - Agastya; प्रतापवान् (pratāpavān) - powerful; प्रोवाच (provāca) - spoke; इदं (idaṃ) - this; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech; वाग्मी (vāgmī) - eloquent; प्रसाद्य (prasādya) - having pleased; शिरसा (śirasā) - with the head (bowed); मुनीन् (munīn) - the sages;]
(Thus, this speech having been spoken, then Agastya, the powerful, spoke this speech—eloquent—having pleased (them), bowing with his head, (to) the sages.)
When these words had been spoken in this way, the powerful Agastya, eloquent, after pleasing the sages by bowing his head, spoke these words. (14-95-16)
यदि द्वादशवर्षाणि न वर्षिष्यति वासवः। चिन्तायज्ञं करिष्यामि विधिरेष सनातनः ॥१४-९५-१७॥
yadi dvādaśavarṣāṇi na varṣiṣyati vāsavaḥ। cintāyajñaṃ kariṣyāmi vidhireṣa sanātanaḥ ॥14-95-17॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; द्वादशवर्षाणि (dvādaśavarṣāṇi) - twelve years; न (na) - not; वर्षिष्यति (varṣiṣyati) - will rain; वासवः (vāsavaḥ) - Indra; चिन्तायज्ञं (cintāyajñaṃ) - sacrifice of mental focus; करिष्यामि (kariṣyāmi) - I shall perform; विधिः (vidhiḥ) - Brahmā; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; सनातनः (sanātanaḥ) - eternal;]
(If for twelve years Indra does not rain, I shall perform the sacrifice of mental focus, this Brahmā is eternal.)
If Indra does not bring rain for twelve years, I will perform the mental sacrifice—this Brahmā is eternal. (14-95-17)
यदि द्वादशवर्षाणि न वर्षिष्यति वासवः। व्यायामेनाहरिष्यामि यज्ञानन्यानतिव्रतान् ॥१४-९५-१८॥
yadi dvādaśa-varṣāṇi na varṣiṣyati vāsavaḥ। vyāyāmena āhariṣyāmi yajñān anyān ati-vratān॥14-95-18॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; द्वादशवर्षाणि (dvādaśa-varṣāṇi) - twelve years; न (na) - not; वर्षिष्यति (varṣiṣyati) - he will rain; वासवः (vāsavaḥ) - Vāsava (Indra); व्यायामेन (vyāyāmena) - by exertion; आहरिष्यामि (āhariṣyāmi) - I will accomplish; यज्ञान् (yajñān) - sacrifices; अन्यान् (anyān) - other; अतिव्रतान् (ati-vratān) - very severe vows;]
(If for twelve years Vāsava (Indra) does not rain, by exertion I will accomplish other sacrifices and very severe vows.)
If Vāsava (Indra) does not cause rain for twelve years, I shall by exertion undertake other sacrifices and extremely rigorous vows. (14-95-18)
बीजयज्ञो मयायं वै बहुवर्षसमाचितः। बीजैः कृतैः करिष्ये च नात्र विघ्नो भविष्यति ॥१४-९५-१९॥
bījayajño mayāyaṁ vai bahuvarṣasamācitaḥ। bījaiḥ kṛtaiḥ kariṣye ca nātra vighno bhaviṣyati ॥14-95-19॥
[बीजयज्ञः (bījayajñaḥ) - seed-sacrifice; मया (mayā) - by me; अयम् (ayam) - this; वै (vai) - indeed; बहुवर्षसमाचितः (bahuvarṣasamācitaḥ) - collected for many years; बीजैः (bījaiḥ) - by seeds; कृतैः (kṛtaiḥ) - prepared; करिष्ये (kariṣye) - I shall do; च (ca) - and; न (na) - not; अत्र (atra) - here; विघ्नः (vighnaḥ) - obstacle; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will occur;]
(Seed-sacrifice by me this indeed collected for many years; with seeds prepared I shall do and not here obstacle will occur.)
This seed-sacrifice has indeed been collected by me over many years; I shall perform it with prepared seeds, and no obstacle will arise here. (14-95-19)
नेदं शक्यं वृथा कर्तुं मम सत्रं कथञ्चन। वर्षिष्यतीह वा देवो न वा देवो भविष्यति ॥१४-९५-२०॥
nedaṁ śakyaṁ vṛthā kartuṁ mama satraṁ kathañcana। varṣiṣyatīha vā devo na vā devo bhaviṣyati॥14-95-20॥
[नेदं (na idam) - not this; शक्यं (śakyaṁ) - possible; वृथा (vṛthā) - in vain; कर्तुं (kartuṁ) - to do; मम (mama) - my; सत्रं (satraṁ) - sacrifice; कथञ्चन (kathañcana) - in any way; वर्षिष्यति (varṣiṣyati) - will rain; इह (iha) - here; वा (vā) - or; देवः (devaḥ) - the god; न (na) - not; वा (vā) - or; देवः (devaḥ) - the god; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be;]
(Not this possible in vain to do my sacrifice in any way. Will rain here or the god, not or the god will be.)
This sacrifice of mine cannot possibly be rendered void in any way. Here the god will rain, or the god will not be (present) here. (14-95-20)
अथ वाभ्यर्थनामिन्द्रः कुर्यान्न त्विह कामतः। स्वयमिन्द्रो भविष्यामि जीवयिष्यामि च प्रजाः ॥१४-९५-२१॥
atha vābhyarthanāmindraḥ kuryānna tv iha kāmataḥ। svayam indro bhaviṣyāmi jīvayiṣyāmi ca prajāḥ॥14-95-21॥
[अथ (atha) - then; वा (vā) - or; अभ्यर्थनाम् (abhyarthanām) - request; इन्द्रः (indraḥ) - Indra; कुर्यात् (kuryāt) - should do; न (na) - not; त्वि (tvi) - indeed; इह (iha) - here; कामतः (kāmataḥ) - by desire; स्वयम् (svayam) - myself; इन्द्रः (indraḥ) - Indra; भविष्यामि (bhaviṣyāmi) - I will become; जीवयिष्यामि (jīvayiṣyāmi) - I will cause to live; च (ca) - and; प्रजाः (prajāḥ) - creatures;]
(Then or at the request Indra should do not indeed here by desire. Myself Indra I will become, I will cause the creatures to live and.)
Then, either upon request, Indra should not act here according to desire. I myself will become Indra and will sustain the creatures. (14-95-21)
यो यदाहारजातश्च स तथैव भविष्यति। विशेषं चैव कर्तास्मि पुनः पुनरतीव हि ॥१४-९५-२२॥
yo yadāhārajātaś ca sa tathaiva bhaviṣyati। viśeṣaṃ caiva kartāsmi punaḥ punaratīva hi ॥14-95-22॥
[यो (yaḥ) - he who; यदाहारजातश् (yad-āhāra-jātaḥ) - which food-type; च (ca) - and; स (sa) - he; तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will become; विशेषं (viśeṣam) - the specialty; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; कर्तास्मि (kartā asmi) - I am the doer; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; अतीव (atīva) - exceedingly; हि (hi) - certainly;]
(He who, which food-type and, he, in the same way, will become; the specialty and indeed, I am the doer, again, again, exceedingly, certainly.)
He who is of whichever type of food, he will become of precisely that kind; and I certainly bring about the distinction again and again exceedingly. (14-95-22)
अद्येह स्वर्णमभ्येतु यच्चान्यद्वसु दुर्लभम्। त्रिषु लोकेषु यच्चास्ति तदिहागच्छतां स्वयम् ॥१४-९५-२३॥
adyeha svarṇam abhyetu yac cānyad vasu durlabham। triṣu lokeṣu yac cāsti tad ihāgacchatāṃ svayam॥14-95-23॥
[अद्य (adya) - today; इह (iha) - here; स्वर्णम् (svarṇam) - gold; अभ्येतु (abhyetu) - let it approach; यत् (yat) - which; च (ca) - and; अन्यत् (anyat) - other; वसु (vasu) - wealth; दुर्लभम् (durlabham) - difficult to obtain; त्रिषु (triṣu) - in the three; लोकेषु (lokeṣu) - worlds; यत् (yat) - which; च (ca) - and; अस्ति (asti) - exists; तत् (tat) - that; इह (iha) - here; आगच्छताम् (āgacchatām) - let come; स्वयम् (svayam) - itself;]
(Today, here, let gold come near, and whatever other wealth difficult to obtain; in the three worlds, whatever exists, let that itself come here.)
May gold come here today, and whatever other wealth is difficult to obtain; whatever exists in the three worlds, let that itself come here. (14-95-23)
दिव्याश्चाप्सरसां सङ्घाः सगन्धर्वाः सकिंनराः। विश्वावसुश्च ये चान्ये तेऽप्युपासन्तु वः सदा ॥१४-९५-२४॥
divyāś cāpsarasāṃ saṅghāḥ sagandharvāḥ sakiṃnarāḥ। viśvāvasuś ca ye caanye te'py upāsantu vaḥ sadā॥14-95-24॥
[दिव्याः (divyāḥ) - divine; च (ca) - and; अप्सरसां (apsarasām) - of the Apsarases; सङ्घाः (saṅghāḥ) - hosts; सगन्धर्वाः (sagandharvāḥ) - with Gandharvas; सकिंनराः (sakiṃnarāḥ) - with Kinnaras; विश्वावसुः (viśvāvasuḥ) - Viśvāvasu; च (ca) - and; ये (ye) - who; च (ca) - and; अन्ये (anye) - others; ते (te) - they; अपि (api) - also; उपासन्तु (upāsantu) - may worship; वः (vaḥ) - you; सदा (sadā) - always;]
(Divine, and of the Apsarases hosts, with Gandharvas, with Kinnaras; Viśvāvasu and who and others, they also may worship you always.)
May the divine hosts of Apsarases, along with the Gandharvas and Kinnaras, Viśvāvasu, and all others — may they also always worship you. (14-95-24)
उत्तरेभ्यः कुरुभ्यश्च यत्किञ्चिद्वसु विद्यते। सर्वं तदिह यज्ञे मे स्वयमेवोपतिष्ठतु ॥ स्वर्गं स्वर्गसदश्चैव धर्मश्च स्वयमेव तु ॥१४-९५-२५॥
uttarebhyaḥ kurubhyaś ca yat kiñcid vasu vidyate। sarvaṃ tad iha yajñe me svayam evopatiṣṭhatu ॥ svargaṃ svargasadaś caiva dharmaś ca svayam eva tu ॥14-95-25॥
[उत्तरेभ्यः (uttarebhyaḥ) - from the northern (Kurus); कुरुभ्यः (kurubhyaḥ) - from the Kurus; च (ca) - and; यत् (yat) - whatever; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; वसु (vasu) - treasure; विद्यते (vidyate) - is found; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; तत् (tat) - that; इह (iha) - here; यज्ञे (yajñe) - in the sacrifice; मे (me) - for me; स्वयम् (svayam) - by itself; एव (eva) - indeed; उपतिष्ठतु (upatiṣṭhatu) - let it present itself; स्वर्गम् (svargam) - heaven; स्वर्गसदः (svargasadaḥ) - seats of heaven; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - virtue; च (ca) - and; स्वयम् (svayam) - by itself; एव (eva) - indeed; तु (tu) - but;]
(From the northern (Kurus) and from the Kurus, whatever treasure is found, all that here in the sacrifice for me let it present itself by itself. Heaven, the seats of heaven indeed, and virtue, let all by itself indeed (appear).)
Let whatever treasure may be found among the northern Kurus and the Kurus, all of it, present itself here of its own accord at my sacrifice. May heaven, the seats of heaven, and virtue, all likewise come by themselves. (14-95-25)
इत्युक्ते सर्वमेवैतदभवत्तस्य धीमतः। ततस्ते मुनयो दृष्ट्वा मुनेस्तस्य तपोबलम् ॥ विस्मिता वचनं प्राहुरिदं सर्वे महार्थवत् ॥१४-९५-२६॥
ityukte sarvamevaitadabhavattasya dhīmataḥ. tatas te munayo dṛṣṭvā munes tasya tapobalam ॥ vismitā vacanaṃ prāhur idaṃ sarve mahārthavat ॥14-95-26॥
[इति-उक्ते (iti-ukte) - thus having been said; सर्वम्-एव-एतत्-अभवत् (sarvam-eva-etat-abhavat) - all indeed this became; तस्य धीमतः (tasya dhīmataḥ) - of him (the) wise; ततः-ते मुनयः (tataḥ-te munayaḥ) - then those sages; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; मुनेः तस्य तपोबलम् (muneḥ tasya tapobalam) - of the sage his power of asceticism; विस्मिताः (vismitāḥ) - astonished; वचनम् (vacanam) - word; प्राहुः (prāhuḥ) - spoke; इदं (idaṃ) - this; सर्वे (sarve) - all; महार्थवत् (mahārthavat) - having great significance;]
(Thus having been said, all indeed this became of him the wise. Then those sages, having seen the sage's power of asceticism, astonished, spoke this word—all having great significance.)
When this was said, all of it indeed came to pass by the wise one's power. Then, seeing the sage's ascetic strength, the astonished sages all spoke these words, full of great meaning. (14-95-26)
प्रीताः स्म तव वाक्येन न त्विच्छामस्तपोव्ययम्। स्वैरेव यज्ञैस्तुष्टाः स्मो न्यायेनेच्छामहे वयम् ॥१४-९५-२७॥
prītāḥ sma tava vākyena na tvicchāmas tapovyayam। svaireva yajñais tuṣṭāḥ smo nyāyeneccāmahe vayam ॥14-95-27॥
[प्रीताः (prītāḥ) - pleased; स्म (sma) - indeed; तव (tava) - by your; वाक्येन (vākyena) - words; न (na) - not; त्वि (tvi) - but; इच्छामः (icchāmaḥ) - we desire; तपः-व्ययम् (tapaḥ-vyayam) - the expenditure of austerity; स्वैः-एव (svaiḥ-eva) - by own only; यज्ञैः (yajñaiḥ) - by sacrifices; तुष्टाः (tuṣṭāḥ) - satisfied; स्मः (smaḥ) - indeed; न्यायेन (nyāyena) - rightfully; इच्छामहे (icchāmahe) - we desire; वयम् (vayam) - we;]
(Pleased indeed by your words, not but we desire the expenditure of austerity. By our own only sacrifices, satisfied indeed, rightfully we desire, we.)
We are pleased by your words; but we do not desire you to expend your austerities. We are truly satisfied by our own sacrifices and we wish for what is just. (14-95-27)
यज्ञान्दीक्षास्तथा होमान्यच्चान्यन्मृगयामहे। तन्नोऽस्तु स्वकृतैर्यज्ञैर्नान्यतो मृगयामहे ॥१४-९५-२८॥
yajñān dīkṣās tathā homān yac ca anyan mṛgayāmahe । tan naḥ astu svakṛtaiḥ yajñaiḥ na anyataḥ mṛgayāmahe ॥14-95-28॥
[यज्ञान् (yajñān) - sacrifices; (accusative plural of yajña) दीक्षाः (dīkṣāḥ) - initiations; (nominative plural of dīkṣā) तथा (tathā) - thus; likewise; होमान् (homān) - oblation rituals; (accusative plural of homa) यच्च (yac ca) - and whatever; अन्यन् (anyan) - other; (accusative singular neuter, "anything else") मृगयामहे (mṛgayāmahe) - we seek; we pursue; तत् (tat) - that; नः (naḥ) - for us; अस्तु (astu) - let it be; may it be; स्वकृतैः (svakṛtaiḥ) - by our own acts; by our own sacrifices; यज्ञैः (yajñaiḥ) - by sacrifices; (instrumental plural) न (na) - not; अन्यतः (anyataḥ) - from elsewhere; from another place; मृगयामहे (mṛgayāmahe) - we seek; we pursue;]
(Sacrifices, initiations, likewise oblation rituals and whatever else we seek, let that be for us by our own sacrifices, not from elsewhere do we seek.)
Sacrifices, initiations, oblation rituals, and anything else we seek—let all that be gained for us through our own sacrifices; we do not seek (it) from elsewhere. (14-95-28)
न्यायेनोपार्जिताहाराः स्वकर्मनिरता वयम्। वेदांश्च ब्रह्मचर्येण न्यायतः प्रार्थयामहे ॥१४-९५-२९॥
nyāyenopārjitāhārāḥ svakarmaniratā vayam। vedaṁśca brahmacaryeṇa nyāyataḥ prārthayāmahe ॥14-95-29॥
[न्यायेन (nyāyena) - by justice; उपार्जित (upārjita) - acquired; आहाराः (āhārāḥ) - food; स्वकर्म (svakarma) - our own duty; निरता (niratāḥ) - engaged in; वयम् (vayam) - we; वेदान् (vedān) - Vedas; च (ca) - and; ब्रह्मचर्येण (brahmacaryeṇa) - by celibacy; न्यायतः (nyāyataḥ) - rightly; प्रार्थयामहे (prārthayāmahe) - we seek;]
(By justice acquired food, engaged in our own work, we; Vedas and by celibacy, rightly, we seek.)
We, engaged in our own duties and partaking of food acquired by justice, duly seek the Vedas through celibacy and in a rightful manner. (14-95-29)
न्यायेनोत्तरकालं च गृहेभ्यो निःसृता वयम्। धर्मदृष्टैर्विधिद्वारैस्तपस्तप्स्यामहे वयम् ॥१४-९५-३०॥
nyāyena uttarakālaṃ ca gṛhebhyaḥ niḥsṛtā vayam। dharmadṛṣṭaiḥ vidhidvāraiḥ tapas tapasyāmahe vayam॥14-95-30॥
[न्यायेन (nyāyena) - by justice; उत्तरकालं (uttarakālam) - after time; (in later period;) च (ca) - and; गृहेभ्यः (gṛhebhyaḥ) - from the houses; निःसृता (niḥsṛtāḥ) - departed; वयम् (vayam) - we; धर्मदृष्टैः (dharmadṛṣṭaiḥ) - by religiously approved; विधिद्वारैः (vidhidvāraiḥ) - by prescribed means; तपः (tapas) - austerity; तप्स्यामहे (tapasyāmahe) - we shall undergo; वयम् (vayam) - we;]
(By justice, after time and, from the houses departed we; by religiously approved prescribed means, austerity, we shall undergo we.)
We, having departed justly from our homes after the proper time, shall undertake austerities by the means enjoined by religious law. (14-95-30)
भवतः सम्यगेषा हि बुद्धिर्हिंसाविवर्जिता। एतामहिंसां यज्ञेषु ब्रूयास्त्वं सततं प्रभो ॥१४-९५-३१॥
bhavataḥ samyag eṣā hi buddhiḥ hiṁsā-vivarjitā. etām ahiṁsām yajñeṣu brūyās tvaṁ satataṁ prabho ॥14-95-31॥
[भवतः (bhavataḥ) - of you; सम्यक् (samyak) - correct; एषा (eṣā) - this; हि (hi) - indeed; बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - understanding; हिंसा-विवर्जिता (hiṁsā-vivarjitā) - devoid of violence; एताम् (etām) - this; अहिंसाम् (ahiṁsām) - non-violence; यज्ञेषु (yajñeṣu) - in sacrifices; ब्रूयाः (brūyāḥ) - you should teach; त्वम् (tvaṁ) - you; सततम् (satatam) - always; प्रभो (prabho) - O Lord;]
(Of you correct this indeed understanding devoid of violence. This non-violence in sacrifices you should teach always O Lord.)
Your understanding is truly correct, being free from violence. You should always proclaim this non-violence in sacrifices, O Lord. (14-95-31)
प्रीतास्ततो भविष्यामो वयं द्विजवरोत्तम। विसर्जिताः समाप्तौ च सत्रादस्माद्व्रजामहे ॥१४-९५-३२॥
prītās tato bhaviṣyāmo vayaṃ dvijavarottama। visarjitāḥ samāptau ca satrād asmād vrajāmahe ॥14-95-32॥
[प्रीताः (prītāḥ) - pleased; satisfied; ततः (tataḥ) - then; thereafter; भविष्यामः (bhaviṣyāmaḥ) - we shall be; we will become; वयम् (vayam) - we; द्विजवरोत्तम (dvijavarottama) - O best of the excellent twice-born; विसर्जिताः (visarjitāḥ) - dismissed; sent forth; समाप्तौ (samāptau) - at the end; upon completion; च (ca) - and; सत्रात् (satrāt) - from the sacrificial session; अस्मात् (asmāt) - from this; व्रजामहे (vrajāmahe) - we shall go; we go;]
(Pleased then we shall be, O best of the excellent twice-born; dismissed at the completion and from this sacrificial session we shall go.)
O best among the excellent twice-born, we shall then be pleased. Having been dismissed at the close of this sacrificial session, we shall depart. (14-95-32)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

[तथा (tathā) - thus; कथयताम् (kathayatām) - while speaking; एव (eva) - just; देवराजः (devarājaḥ) - the king of the gods; पुरंदरः (puraṃdaraḥ) - Purandara (Indra); ववर्ष (vavarṣa) - he rained; सुमहातेजा (sumahātejā) - of very great splendor; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; तस्य (tasya) - his; तपोबलम् (tapobalam) - the power of asceticism;]
(Thus, while they were speaking, the king of the gods, Purandara, of very great splendor, rained, having seen his power of asceticism.)
Thus, while they were speaking, Indra, the king of the gods, Purandara, possessing great brilliance, caused it to rain upon seeing his ascetic power. (14-95-33)
असमाप्तौ च यज्ञस्य तस्यामितपराक्रमः। निकामवर्षी देवेन्द्रो बभूव जनमेजय ॥१४-९५-३४॥
asamāptau ca yajñasya tasyāmitaparākramaḥ। nikāmavarṣī devendro babhūva janamejaya ॥14-95-34॥
[असमाप्तौ (asamāptau) - not-completed; not finished; च (ca) - and; यज्ञस्य (yajñasya) - of the sacrifice; तस्य (tasya) - his; अमितपराक्रमः (amita-parākramaḥ) - of unlimited valor; निकामवर्षी (nikāma-varṣī) - eagerly-giving rain; abundant rain-giver; देवेन्द्रः (devendraḥ) - Indra, lord of the gods; बभूव (babhūva) - became; जनमेजय (janamejaya) - Janamejaya;]
(Not completed and of the sacrifice his, of unlimited valor, eagerly-giving rain Indra became, O Janamejaya.)
O Janamejaya, while his great sacrifice was yet unfinished, Indra, the lord of the gods of immense valor, bestowed abundant rains. (14-95-34)
प्रसादयामास च तमगस्त्यं त्रिदशेश्वरः। स्वयमभ्येत्य राजर्षे पुरस्कृत्य बृहस्पतिम् ॥१४-९५-३५॥
prasādayāmāsa ca tam-agastyaṃ tridaśeśvaraḥ। svayam-abhyetya rājarṣe puraskṛtya bṛhaspatim ॥14-95-35॥
[प्रसादयामास (prasādayāmāsa) - caused to be pleased; च (ca) - and; तम् (tam) - him; अगस्त्यम् (agastyam) - Agastya; त्रिदशेश्वरः (tridaśeśvaraḥ) - the lord of the gods; स्वयम् (svayam) - himself; अभ्येत्य (abhyetya) - approaching; राजर्षे (rājarṣe) - O royal sage; पुरस्कृत्य (puraskṛtya) - placing in front; बृहस्पतिम् (bṛhaspatim) - Bṛhaspati;]
(Caused to be pleased and him Agastya the lord of the gods; himself approaching O royal sage placing in front Bṛhaspati.)
And the lord of the gods, having himself approached, O royal sage, caused Agastya to be pleased, placing Bṛhaspati at the forefront. (14-95-35)
ततो यज्ञसमाप्तौ तान्विससर्ज महामुनीन्। अगस्त्यः परमप्रीतः पूजयित्वा यथाविधि ॥१४-९५-३६॥
tato yajñasamāptau tānvisasarja mahāmunīn. agastyaḥ paramaprītaḥ pūjayitvā yathāvidhi ॥14-95-36॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; यज्ञसमाप्तौ (yajñasamāptau) - on completion of the sacrifice; तान् (tān) - those; विससर्ज (visasarja) - dismissed; महामुनीन् (mahāmunīn) - great sages; अगस्त्यः (agastyaḥ) - Agastya (the sage); परमप्रीतः (paramaprītaḥ) - deeply pleased; पूजयित्वा (pūjayitvā) - having honored; यथाविधि (yathāvidhi) - according to rule;]
(Then on completion of the sacrifice, those great sages Agastya, deeply pleased, having honored according to rule, dismissed.)
Then, when the sacrifice was completed, Agastya, having duly honored the great sages and being deeply pleased, dismissed them. (14-95-36)
