After gaining the kingdom, how did my grandfathers, the most fortunate Pāṇḍavas, live with Dhṛtarāṣṭra, the high-souled great king? (15-1-1)
स हि राजा हतामात्यो हतपुत्रो निराश्रयः। कथमासीद्धतैश्वर्यो गान्धारी च यशस्विनी ॥१५-१-२॥
sa hi rājā hatāmātyo hataputro nirāśrayaḥ। katham āsīd hataiśvaryo gāndhārī ca yaśasvinī॥15-1-2॥

He indeed, the king, whose ministers and sons were slain and bereft of support—how did he, with his power destroyed, and Gāndhārī the illustrious one, fare? (15-1-2)
कियन्तं चैव कालं ते पितरो मम पूर्वकाः। स्थिता राज्ये महात्मानस्तन्मे व्याख्यातुमर्हसि ॥१५-१-३॥
kiyantaṃ caiva kālaṃ te pitaro mama pūrvakāḥ। sthitā rājye mahātmānas tan me vyākhyātum arhasi॥15-1-3॥

You ought to explain to me how long your fathers, my ancestors, the great souls, remained in the kingdom. (15-1-3)

prāpya rājyaṃ mahātmānaḥ pāṇḍavā hataśatravaḥ। dhṛtarāṣṭraṃ puraskṛtya pṛthivīṃ paryapālayan ॥15-1-4॥

After obtaining the kingdom and having slain their enemies, the noble Pāṇḍavas, with Dhṛtarāṣṭra at the forefront, ruled over the earth. (15-1-4)
धृतराष्ट्रमुपातिष्ठद्विदुरः सञ्जयस्तथा। युयुत्सुश्चापि मेधावी वैश्यापुत्रः स कौरवः ॥१५-१-५॥
dhṛtarāṣṭram upātiṣṭhad viduraḥ sañjayaḥ tathā। yuyutsuś ca api medhāvī vaiśyāputraḥ sa kauravaḥ ॥15-1-5॥

Vidura attended to Dhṛtarāṣṭra, as did Sañjaya. Yuyutsu, the wise Kaurava who was the son of a Vaiśyā, also did so. (15-1-5)
पाण्डवाः सर्वकार्याणि सम्पृच्छन्ति स्म तं नृपम्। चक्रुस्तेनाभ्यनुज्ञाता वर्षाणि दश पञ्च च ॥१५-१-६॥
pāṇḍavāḥ sarvakāryāṇi sampṛcchanti sma taṃ nṛpam। cakrustenābhyanujñātā varṣāṇi daśa pañca ca ॥15-1-6॥

(The Pāṇḍavas all actions enquired indeed of that king. Performed, having been permitted by him, years ten and five and.)
The Pāṇḍavas enquired about all undertakings from that king. Having received his permission, they performed (them) for fifteen years. (15-1-6)
सदा हि गत्वा ते वीराः पर्युपासन्त तं नृपम्। पादाभिवन्दनं कृत्वा धर्मराजमते स्थिताः ॥ ते मूर्ध्नि समुपाघ्राताः सर्वकार्याणि चक्रिरे ॥१५-१-७॥
sadā hi gatvā te vīrāḥ paryupāsanta taṃ nṛpam। pādābhivandanaṃ kṛtvā dharmarājamate sthitāḥ ॥ te mūrdhni samupāghrātāḥ sarvakāryāṇi cakrire ॥15-1-7॥

(Always indeed, having gone, they, heroes, attended that king. Having done salutation at the feet, being established according to the opinion of Dharmarāja. They, having been smelled on the head, performed all duties.)
Always, having gone, those heroes attended upon that king. After performing salutation at his feet, they stayed as per Dharmarāja's will. Having their heads touched (smelled) by him, they performed all their duties. (15-1-7)
कुन्तिभोजसुता चैव गान्धारीमन्ववर्तत। द्रौपदी च सुभद्रा च याश्चान्याः पाण्डवस्त्रियः ॥ समां वृत्तिमवर्तन्त तयोः श्वश्र्वोर्यथाविधि ॥१५-१-८॥
kuntibhojasutā caiva gāndhārīmanvavartata। draupadī ca subhadrā ca yāścānyāḥ pāṇḍavastriyaḥ॥ samāṃ vṛttimavartanta tayoḥ śvaśrvoryathāvidhi॥15-1-8॥

(The daughter of Kuntibhoja indeed followed Gandhari. Draupadi and Subhadra and who and other Pandava women engaged in equal conduct of those two mothers-in-law according to custom.)
The daughter of Kuntibhoja indeed followed Gandhari; Draupadi, Subhadra, and the other wives of the Pandavas all behaved equally toward their two mothers-in-law, as was proper. (15-1-8)
शयनानि महार्हाणि वासांस्याभरणानि च। राजार्हाणि च सर्वाणि भक्ष्यभोज्यान्यनेकशः ॥ युधिष्ठिरो महाराज धृतराष्ट्रेऽभ्युपाहरत् ॥१५-१-९॥
śayanāni mahārhāṇi vāsāṃsyābharaṇāni ca। rājarhāṇi ca sarvāṇi bhakṣyabhojyānyanekazaḥ ॥ yudhiṣṭhiro mahārāja dhṛtarāṣṭre'bhyupāharat ॥15-1-9॥
[शयनानि (śayanāni) - beds; महार्हाणि (mahārhāṇi) - very precious; वासांसि (vāsāṃsi) - garments; आभरणानि (ābharaṇāni) - ornaments; च (ca) - and; राजार्हाणि (rājarhāṇi) - worthy of a king; च (ca) - and; सर्वाणि (sarvāṇi) - all; भक्ष्यभोज्यानि (bhakṣyabhojyāni) - edibles and foods; अनेकशः (anekazaḥ) - in many kinds; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira; महाराज (mahārāja) - great king; धृतराष्ट्रे (dhṛtarāṣṭre) - to Dhritarashtra; अभ्युपाहरत् (abhyupāharat) - did present;]
(Beds very precious, garments, ornaments and; worthy of a king and all edibles and foods in many kinds; Yudhishthira the great king to Dhritarashtra did present.)
Yudhishthira, the great king, presented to Dhritarashtra many precious beds, garments, ornaments, all kinds of royal-worthy edibles and foods in abundance. (15-1-9)
तथैव कुन्ती गान्धार्यां गुरुवृत्तिमवर्तत। विदुरः सञ्जयश्चैव युयुत्सुश्चैव कौरवः ॥ उपासते स्म तं वृद्धं हतपुत्रं जनाधिपम् ॥१५-१-१०॥
tathaiva kuntī gāndhāryāṃ guruvṛttimavartata. viduraḥ sañjayaścaiva yuyutsuścaiva kauravaḥ ॥ upāsate sma taṃ vṛddhaṃ hataputraṃ janādhipam ॥15-1-10॥
[तथैव (tathaiva) - just so; thus; likewise; कुन्ती (kuntī) - Kunti; गान्धार्यां (gāndhāryām) - towards Gandhari; गुरुवृत्तिम् (guruvṛttim) - attitude of a disciple; serving as to a teacher; अवर्तत (avartata) - behaved; acted; विदुरः (viduraḥ) - Vidura; सञ्जयः (sañjayaḥ) - Sanjaya; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; युयुत्सुः (yuyutsuḥ) - Yuyutsu; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; कौरवः (kauravaḥ) - the Kaurava; Yuyutsu (a Kaurava); उपासते (upāsate) - attended; served; revered; स्म (sma) - indeed; (particle indicating past action); तं (taṃ) - him; वृद्धं (vṛddham) - the aged; old; हतपुत्रं (hataputraṃ) - whose son(s) are slain; जनाधिपम् (janādhipam) - the lord of the people; king;]
(Just so Kunti towards Gandhari behaved with an attitude of disciple. Vidura, Sanjaya and indeed Yuyutsu, the Kaurava, indeed attended him, the aged king whose sons were slain.)
In the same way, Kunti behaved towards Gandhari with the reverence of a disciple. Vidura, Sanjaya, and Yuyutsu the Kaurava also served that aged king who had lost his sons. (15-1-10)
स्यालो द्रोणस्य यश्चैको दयितो ब्राह्मणो महान्। स च तस्मिन्महेष्वासः कृपः समभवत्तदा ॥१५-१-११॥
syālo droṇasya yaś caiko dayito brāhmaṇo mahān। sa ca tasmin maheṣvāsaḥ kṛpaḥ samabhavat tadā ॥15-1-11॥

The brother-in-law of Droṇa, who alone was a beloved and eminent brāhmaṇa, namely, the great archer Kṛpa, was also present there at that time. (15-1-11)
व्यासश्च भगवान्नित्यं वासं चक्रे नृपेण ह। कथाः कुर्वन्पुराणर्षिर्देवर्षिनृपरक्षसाम् ॥१५-१-१२॥
vyāsaś ca bhagavān nityaṃ vāsaṃ cakre nṛpeṇa ha। kathāḥ kurvan purāṇaṛṣir devarṣi-nṛpa-rakṣasām॥15-1-12॥
[व्यासः (vyāsaḥ) - Vyāsa; च (ca) - and; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the revered; नित्यं (nityaṃ) - constantly; वासं (vāsaṃ) - residence; चक्रे (cakre) - made; नृपेण (nṛpeṇa) - by the king; ह (ha) - indeed; कथाः (kathāḥ) - stories; कुर्वन् (kurvan) - while narrating; पुराणर्षि: (purāṇaṛṣiḥ) - the ancient sage; देवर्षि (devarṣi) - of the divine sages; नृप (nṛpa) - of kings; रक्षसाम् (rakṣasām) - of demons;]

धर्मयुक्तानि कार्याणि व्यवहारान्वितानि च। धृतराष्ट्राभ्यनुज्ञातो विदुरस्तान्यकारयत् ॥१५-१-१३॥
dharmayuktāni kāryāṇi vyavahārānvitāni ca। dhṛtarāṣṭrābhyanujñāto viduras tāny akarayat ॥15-1-13॥
[धर्मयुक्तानि (dharmayuktāni) - endowed with dharma; कार्याणि (kāryāṇi) - actions; व्यवहारान्वितानि (vyavahārānvitāni) - accompanied by transactions; च (ca) - and; धृतराष्ट्राभ्यनुज्ञातः (dhṛtarāṣṭrābhyanujñātaḥ) - approved by Dhṛtarāṣṭra; विदुरः (viduraḥ) - Vidura; तानि (tāni) - those; अकारयत् (akarayat) - caused to be done;]

Vidura carried out those actions that were consistent with dharma, involved proper transactions, and had Dhṛtarāṣṭra's approval. (15-1-13)
सामन्तेभ्यः प्रियाण्यस्य कार्याणि सुगुरूण्यपि। प्राप्यन्तेऽर्थैः सुलघुभिः प्रभावाद्विदुरस्य वै ॥१५-१-१४॥
sāmantebhyaḥ priyāṇyasya kāryāṇi sugurūṇyapi। prāpyante'rthaiḥ sulaghubhiḥ prabhāvādvidurasya vai ॥15-1-14॥
[सामन्तेभ्यः (sāmantebhyaḥ) - to the allies; प्रियाणि (priyāṇi) - dear things; अस्य (asya) - of him; कार्याणि (kāryāṇi) - tasks; सुगुरूणि (sugurūṇi) - very difficult; अपि (api) - even; प्राप्यन्ते (prāpyante) - are obtained; अर्थैः (arthaiḥ) - by means; सुलघुभिः (sulaghubhiḥ) - very small; प्रभावात् (prabhāvāt) - through influence; विदुरस्य (vidurasya) - of the wise man; वै (vai) - indeed;]

अकरोद्बन्धमोक्षांश्च वध्यानां मोक्षणं तथा। न च धर्मात्मजो राजा कदाचित्किञ्चिदब्रवीत् ॥१५-१-१५॥
akarodbandhamokṣāṁś ca vadhyānāṁ mokṣaṇaṁ tathā। na ca dharmātmajo rājā kadācitkiñcid abravīt ॥15-1-15॥
[अकरोत् (akarot) - he did; (from kṛ, to do); बन्धमोक्षान् (bandhamokṣān) - releases from bondage; (bandha - bondage; mokṣa - release); च (ca) - and; वध्यानाम् (vadhyānām) - of those to be executed; (vadhya - one who is to be killed; genitive plural); मोक्षणम् (mokṣaṇam) - release; (noun form from mukt); तथा (tathā) - also; similarly; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; धर्मात्मजः (dharmātmajaḥ) - son of Dharma (Yudhishthira); राजा (rājā) - the king; कदाचित् (kadācit) - at any time; ever; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - he said; (from brū, to speak);]
(He did releases from bondage and also the release of those who were to be executed. And the king, the son of Dharma, did not ever say anything.)
He effected the release of those imprisoned and also pardoned those condemned to death; yet the king, son of Dharma, never spoke a word (against this). (15-1-15)
विहारयात्रासु पुनः कुरुराजो युधिष्ठिरः। सर्वान्कामान्महातेजाः प्रददावम्बिकासुते ॥१५-१-१६॥
vihārayātrāsu punaḥ kururājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। sarvān kāmān mahātejāḥ pradadāv ambikāsute ॥15-1-16॥

(In enjoyment journeys, again the king of the Kurus, Yudhisthira, (who was) greatly resplendent, gave all desires to the son of Ambikā.)
During the pleasure outings, Yudhisthira, the king of the Kurus, again gave all desired things to Ambika's son (Dhritarashtra), being greatly resplendent. (15-1-16)
आरालिकाः सूपकारा रागखाण्डविकास्तथा। उपातिष्ठन्त राजानं धृतराष्ट्रं यथा पुरा ॥१५-१-१७॥
ārālikāḥ sūpakārā rāgakhāṇḍavikās tathā। upātiṣṭhanta rājānaṃ dhṛtarāṣṭraṃ yathā purā ॥15-1-17॥

The makers of pickles and preserves, the cooks, and the confectioners, likewise, attended upon King Dhṛtarāṣṭra just as before. (15-1-17)
वासांसि च महार्हाणि माल्यानि विविधानि च। उपाजह्रुर्यथान्यायं धृतराष्ट्रस्य पाण्डवाः ॥१५-१-१८॥
vāsāṃsi ca mahārhāṇi mālyāni vividhāni ca। upājahruḥ yathā nyāyaṃ dhṛtarāṣṭrasya pāṇḍavāḥ ॥15-1-18॥
[वासांसि (vāsāṃsi) - garments; च (ca) - and; महार्हाणि (mahārhāṇi) - very valuable; माल्यानि (mālyāni) - garlands; विविधानि (vividhāni) - various; च (ca) - and; उपाजह्रुः (upājahruḥ) - they presented; यथान्यायम् (yathā nyāyam) - according to propriety; धृतराष्ट्रस्य (dhṛtarāṣṭrasya) - to Dhritarashtra; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pandavas;]
(Garments and very valuable, garlands various and, they presented according to propriety to Dhritarashtra the Pandavas.)
The Pandavas respectfully presented to Dhritarashtra garments of great value and various garlands, all according to proper custom. (15-1-18)
मैरेयं मधु मांसानि पानकानि लघूनि च। चित्रान्भक्ष्यविकारांश्च चक्रुरस्य यथा पुरा ॥१५-१-१९॥
maireyaṃ madhu māṃsāni pānakāni laghūni ca। citrānbhakṣyavikārāṃśca cakrurasya yathā purā॥15-1-19॥
[मैरेयं (maireyam) - maireya (a type of liquor); मधु (madhu) - honey; मांसानि (māṃsāni) - meats; पानकानि (pānakāni) - drinks; लघूनि (laghūni) - light (foods); च (ca) - and; चित्रान् (citrān) - various; भक्ष्यविकारान् (bhakṣya-vikārān) - food preparations; च (ca) - and; चक्रुः (cakruḥ) - they prepared; अस्य (asya) - for him; यथा (yathā) - as; पुरा (purā) - formerly;]
(Maireya, honey, meats, drinks, light (foods), and various food preparations they prepared for him as formerly.)
They prepared Maireya, honey, meats, drinks, light foods, and various food preparations for him just as before. (15-1-19)
ये चापि पृथिवीपालाः समाजग्मुः समन्ततः। उपातिष्ठन्त ते सर्वे कौरवेन्द्रं यथा पुरा ॥१५-१-२०॥
ye cāpi pṛthivī-pālāḥ samājagmuḥ samantataḥ। upātiṣṭhanta te sarve kauravendraṃ yathā purā॥15-1-20॥
[ये (ye) - who; (those who); च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; पृथिवीपालाः (pṛthivīpālāḥ) - kings of the earth; समाजग्मुः (samājagmuḥ) - came together; समन्ततः (samantataḥ) - from all sides; उपातिष्ठन्त (upātiṣṭhanta) - attended upon; ते (te) - they; सर्वे (sarve) - all; कौरवेन्द्रं (kauravendraṃ) - the king of the Kauravas; यथा (yathā) - as; पुरा (purā) - formerly;]
(Who and also the kings of the earth came together from all sides, attended upon they all the Kaurava king as formerly.)
And those kings of the earth also gathered from all sides, all of them attended upon the king of the Kauravas as before. (15-1-20)
कुन्ती च द्रौपदी चैव सात्वती चैव भामिनी। उलूपी नागकन्या च देवी चित्राङ्गदा तथा ॥१५-१-२१॥
kuntī ca draupadī caiva sātvati caiva bhāminī। ulūpī nāgakanyā ca devī citrāṅgadā tathā ॥15-1-21॥

धृष्टकेतोश्च भगिनी जरासन्धस्य चात्मजा। किङ्कराः स्मोपतिष्ठन्ति सर्वाः सुबलजां तथा ॥१५-१-२२॥
dhṛṣṭaketos ca bhaginī jarāsandhasya cātmajā. kiṅkarāḥ smopatiṣṭhanti sarvāḥ subalajāṃ tathā ॥15-1-22॥
[धृष्टकेतुः (dhṛṣṭaketuḥ) - Dhṛṣṭaketu; (proper noun); च (ca) - and; भगिनी (bhaginī) - sister; जरासन्धस्य (jarāsandhasya) - of Jarāsandha; च (ca) - and; आत्मजा (ātmajā) - daughter; किङ्कराः (kiṅkarāḥ) - servants; स्म (sma) - indeed; उपतिष्ठन्ति (upatiṣṭhanti) - attend upon; सर्वाः (sarvāḥ) - all; सुबलजां (subalajām) - Subala's (daughter); तथा (tathā) - also;]

यथा पुत्रवियुक्तोऽयं न किञ्चिद्दुःखमाप्नुयात्। इति राजान्वशाद्भ्रातॄन्नित्यमेव युधिष्ठिरः ॥१५-१-२३॥
yathā putraviyukto'yaṁ na kiñcidduḥkham āpnuyāt। iti rājā anvaśāt bhrātṝn nityam eva yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ॥15-1-23॥
[यथा (yathā) - as; in the way that; पुत्रवियुक्तः (putraviyuktaḥ) - deprived of (his) son; अयम् (ayam) - this (person); न (na) - not; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; even a little; दुःखम् (duḥkham) - sorrow; pain; आप्नुयात् (āpnuyāt) - might obtain; would experience; इति (iti) - thus; so; राजा (rājā) - the king; अन्वशात् (anvaśāt) - wished; desired; भ्रातॄन् (bhrātṝn) - brothers; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; एव (eva) - alone; indeed; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira;]
(As this one deprived of his son might not obtain any sorrow, thus the king Yudhishthira always wished for his brothers.)
Just as this person, having lost his son, might not experience any sorrow, so King Yudhishthira always wished the same for his brothers. (15-1-23)
एवं ते धर्मराजस्य श्रुत्वा वचनमर्थवत्। सविशेषमवर्तन्त भीममेकं विना तदा ॥१५-१-२४॥
evaṃ te dharmarājasya śrutvā vacanam arthavat। saviśeṣam avartanta bhīmam ekaṃ vinā tadā ॥15-1-24॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; ते (te) - they; धर्मराजस्य (dharmarājasya) - of Dharmarāja; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; वचनम् (vacanam) - words; अर्थवत् (arthavat) - full of meaning; सविशेषम् (saviśeṣam) - distinctively; अवर्तन्त (avartanta) - they behaved; भीमम् (bhīmam) - Bhīma; एकम् (ekaṃ) - alone; विना (vinā) - without; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Thus they, having heard Dharmarāja's words full of meaning, then behaved distinctively, all except Bhīma alone.)
Thus, having heard the meaningful words of Dharmarāja, they all acted accordingly at that time, except for Bhīma alone. (15-1-24)
न हि तत्तस्य वीरस्य हृदयादपसर्पति। धृतराष्ट्रस्य दुर्बुद्धेर्यद्वृत्तं द्यूतकारितम् ॥१५-१-२५॥
na hi tat tasya vīrasya hṛdayād apasarpati. dhṛtarāṣṭrasya durbuddheḥ yad vṛttaṃ dyūta-kāritam ॥15-1-25॥
[न (na) - not; हि (hi) - for; तत् (tat) - that; तस्य (tasya) - of him; वीरस्य (vīrasya) - of the hero; हृदयात् (hṛdayāt) - from the heart; अपसर्पति (apasarpati) - moves away; धृतराष्ट्रस्य (dhṛtarāṣṭrasya) - of Dhṛtarāṣṭra; दुर्बुद्धेः (durbuddheḥ) - of the evil-minded one; यत् (yat) - which; वृत्तम् (vṛttam) - happened; द्यूतकारितम् (dyūta-kāritam) - caused by gambling;]
(Not for that of him, of the hero, from the heart moves away; of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, of the evil-minded one, which happened caused by gambling.)
Indeed, that event caused by gambling which was done by the evil-minded Dhṛtarāṣṭra does not leave the heart of that hero. (15-1-25)
