एवं सम्पूजितो राजा पाण्डवैरम्बिकासुतः। विजहार यथापूर्वमृषिभिः पर्युपासितः ॥१५-२-१॥
evaṃ sampūjito rājā pāṇḍavair ambikāsutaḥ। vijahāra yathā-pūrvam ṛṣibhiḥ paryupāsitaḥ॥15-2-1॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; सम्पूजितः (sampūjitaḥ) - honored; राजा (rājā) - king; पाण्डवैः (pāṇḍavaiḥ) - by the Pāṇḍavas; अम्बिका-सुतः (ambikāsutaḥ) - son of Ambikā; विजहार (vijahāra) - he moved about; he lived; यथा (yathā) - as; पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - before; formerly; ऋषिभिः (ṛṣibhiḥ) - by sages; पर्युपासितः (paryupāsitaḥ) - attended; surrounded;]
(Thus, honored by the Pāṇḍavas, the king, son of Ambikā, moved about as before, attended by sages.)
Thus, having been honored by the Pāṇḍavas, King Ambikāsuta (the son of Ambikā) lived as he did before, surrounded by sages. (15-2-1)
ब्रह्मदेयाग्रहारांश्च प्रददौ स कुरूद्वहः। तच्च कुन्तीसुतो राजा सर्वमेवान्वमोदत ॥१५-२-२॥
brahmadeyāgrahārāṁś ca pradadau sa kurūdvahaḥ। tac ca kuntīsuto rājā sarvam evānvamodata ॥15-2-2॥
[ब्रह्मदेय (brahmadeya) - gifted to Brāhmaṇas; अग्रहारान् (agrahārān) - land-grants; च (ca) - and; प्रददौ (pradadau) - he gave; स (sa) - he; कुरूद्वहः (kurūdvahaḥ) - the foremost of Kurus; तत् (tat) - that; च (ca) - and; कुन्ती-सुतः (kuntī-sutaḥ) - son of Kuntī; राजा (rājā) - the king; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; एव (eva) - indeed; अन्वमोदत (anvamodata) - approved;]
(Brahmana-gifted land grants and (also) he gave, that one, the foremost of Kurus. And that the son of Kunti, the king, all indeed approved.)
The foremost of the Kurus gave land grants gifted to Brahmanas. The son of Kunti, the king, gladly approved all of it. (15-2-2)
आनृशंस्यपरो राजा प्रीयमाणो युधिष्ठिरः। उवाच स तदा भ्रातॄनमात्यांश्च महीपतिः ॥१५-२-३॥
ānṛśaṁsyaparo rājā prīyamāṇo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। uvāca sa tadā bhrātṝn amātyāṁś ca mahīpatiḥ ॥15-2-3॥
[आनृशंस्यपरो (ānṛśaṁsyaparaḥ) - devoted to compassion; राजा (rājā) - the king; प्रीयमाणः (prīyamāṇaḥ) - being pleased; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira; उवाच (uvāca) - spoke; स (sa) - he; तदा (tadā) - then; भ्रातॄन् (bhrātṝn) - brothers; अमात्यान् (amātyān) - ministers; च (ca) - and; महीपतिः (mahīpatiḥ) - the lord of the earth;]
(Devoted to compassion the king, being pleased, Yudhishthira, spoke then, (to) brothers and ministers, the lord of the earth.)
The compassionate king Yudhishthira, being pleased, then spoke to his brothers and ministers, the lord of the earth. (15-2-3)
मया चैव भवद्भिश्च मान्य एष नराधिपः। निदेशे धृतराष्ट्रस्य यः स्थास्यति स मे सुहृत् ॥ विपरीतश्च मे शत्रुर्निरस्यश्च भवेन्नरः ॥१५-२-४॥
mayā caiva bhavadbhiśca mānya eṣa narādhipaḥ। nideśe dhṛtarāṣṭrasya yaḥ sthāsyati sa me suhṛt॥ viparītaśca me śatrurnirasyāśca bhavennaraḥ॥15-2-4॥
[मया (mayā) - by me; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; भवद्भिः (bhavadbhiḥ) - by you (plural); च (ca) - and; मान्यः (mānyaḥ) - to be respected; एष (eṣa) - this; नराधिपः (narādhipaḥ) - king (lord of men); निदेशे (nideśe) - to the command; धृतराष्ट्रस्य (dhṛtarāṣṭrasya) - of Dhṛtarāṣṭra; यः (yaḥ) - who; स्थास्यति (sthāsyati) - will stand; सः (sa) - he; मे (me) - my; सुहृत् (suhṛt) - friend; विपरीतः (viparītaḥ) - opposed; च (ca) - and; मे (me) - my; शत्रु (śatru) - enemy; निरस्यम् (nirasyam) - to be rejected; च (ca) - and; भवेत् (bhavet) - may be; नरः (naraḥ) - man;]
(By me and indeed by you, this king is to be respected; who will stand in the command of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, he is my friend. Opposed, and my enemy, and to be rejected may be the man.)
This king is to be respected by me and by you all; whoever will stand under the command of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, he is my friend. Anyone acting contrary is my enemy and should be rejected. (15-2-4)
परिदृष्टेषु चाहःसु पुत्राणां श्राद्धकर्मणि। ददातु राजा सर्वेषां यावदस्य चिकीर्षितम् ॥१५-२-५॥
paridṛṣṭeṣu ca āhaḥsu putrāṇām śrāddhakarmaṇi. dadātu rājā sarveṣām yāvad asya cikīrṣitam ॥15-2-5॥
[परिदृष्टेषु (paridṛṣṭeṣu) - which have been observed; च (ca) - and; आहःसु (āhaḥsu) - on the days; पुत्राणाम् (putrāṇām) - of the sons; श्राद्धकर्मणि (śrāddhakarmaṇi) - in the funeral rite; ददातु (dadātu) - should give; राजा (rājā) - the king; सर्वेषाम् (sarveṣām) - of all; यावत् (yāvat) - as much as; अस्य (asya) - his; चिकीर्षितम् (cikīrṣitam) - intended (to be done);]
(Which have been observed and on the days of the sons, in the funeral rite, should give the king for all as much as his intended (wish).)
On the days that have been appointed and in connection with the funeral rites for the sons, the king should grant to all as much as is intended by the person. (15-2-5)
ततः स राजा कौरव्यो धृतराष्ट्रो महामनाः। ब्राह्मणेभ्यो महार्हेभ्यो ददौ वित्तान्यनेकशः ॥१५-२-६॥
tataḥ sa rājā kauravyo dhṛtarāṣṭro mahāmanāḥ। brāhmaṇebhyo mahārhebhyo dadau vittānyanekasaḥ॥15-2-6॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; स (sa) - he; राजा (rājā) - king; कौरव्यो (kauravyo) - of the Kaurava; धृतराष्ट्रः (dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ) - Dhritarashtra; महामनाः (mahāmanāḥ) - great-minded; ब्राह्मणेभ्यः (brāhmaṇebhyaḥ) - to the Brahmins; महार्हेभ्यः (mahārhebhyaḥ) - to those of great worth; ददौ (dadau) - he gave; वित्तानि (vittāni) - wealth; अनेकशः (anekasaḥ) - repeatedly;]
(Then he, the king, the Kaurava Dhritarashtra, great-minded, to the Brahmins, to those of great worth, gave wealth repeatedly.)
Then that great-minded king Dhritarashtra of the Kauravas gave wealth repeatedly to the Brahmins of great worth. (15-2-6)
धर्मराजश्च भीमश्च सव्यसाची यमावपि। तत्सर्वमन्ववर्तन्त धृतराष्ट्रव्यपेक्षया ॥१५-२-७॥
dharmarājaś ca bhīmaś ca savyasācī yamāv api। tat sarvam anvavartanta dhṛtarāṣṭra-vyapekṣayā ॥15-2-7॥
[धर्मराजः (dharmarājaḥ) (dharmarājaḥ) - King of Dharma; च (ca) (ca) - and; भीमः (bhīmaḥ) (bhīmaḥ) - Bhīma; च (ca) (ca) - and; सव्यसाची (savyasācī) (savyasācī) - Savyasācī (Arjuna, one who is ambidextrous); यमौ (yamau) (yamau) - the two sons of Yama (i.e., Nakula and Sahadeva); अपि (api) (api) - also; तत् (tat) (tat) - that; सर्वम् (sarvam) (sarvam) - all; अन्ववर्तन्त (anvavartanta) (anvavartanta) - followed; धृतराष्ट्रव्यपेक्षया (dhṛtarāṣṭra-vyapekṣayā) (dhṛtarāṣṭra-vyapekṣayā) - out of regard for Dhṛtarāṣṭra;]
(King of Dharma and Bhīma and Savyasācī, the two sons of Yama also, all that followed out of regard for Dhṛtarāṣṭra.)
King Yudhishthira, Bhīma, Arjuna, and the twins Nakula and Sahadeva, all followed, out of consideration for Dhritarashtra. (15-2-7)
कथं नु राजा वृद्धः सन्पुत्रशोकसमाहतः। शोकमस्मत्कृतं प्राप्य न म्रियेतेति चिन्त्यते ॥१५-२-८॥
kathaṁ nu rājā vṛddhaḥ san putraśoka-samāhataḥ। śokam asmat-kṛtaṁ prāpya na mriyeta iti cintyate ॥15-2-8॥
[कथं (kathaṁ) - how; नु (nu) - indeed; राजा (rājā) - king; वृद्धः (vṛddhaḥ) - aged; सन् (san) - being; पुत्रशोकसमाहतः (putraśoka-samāhataḥ) - overwhelmed by grief for (his) son; शोकम् (śokam) - grief; अस्मत्कृतम् (asmat-kṛtam) - caused by us; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having obtained; न (na) - not; म्रियेते (mriyeta) - might die; इति (iti) - thus; चिन्त्यते (cintyate) - it is considered;]
(How indeed the king, being aged, overwhelmed by grief for (his) son, having obtained the grief caused by us, might not die — thus it is considered.)
It is being considered: "How indeed, as the king is aged and overwhelmed with grief for his son, will he not die, having received this grief caused by us?" (15-2-8)
यावद्धि कुरुमुख्यस्य जीवत्पुत्रस्य वै सुखम्। बभूव तदवाप्नोतु भोगांश्चेति व्यवस्थिताः ॥१५-२-९॥
yāvad dhi kuru-mukhyasya jīvatu-putrasya vai sukham। babhūva tad avāpnvtu bhogāṃś ca iti vyavasthitāḥ ॥15-2-9॥
[यावत् (yāvat) - as long as; हि (hi) - indeed; कुरुमुख्यस्य (kuru-mukhyasya) - of the chief of the Kurus; जीवत्पुत्रस्य (jīvatu-putrasya) - of the living son; वै (vai) - truly; सुखम् (sukham) - happiness; बभूव (babhūva) - existed; तत् (tat) - that; अवाप्नोतु (avāpnvtu) - he may obtain; भोगान् (bhogān) - enjoyments; च (ca) - and; इति (iti) - thus; व्यवस्थिताः (vyavasthitāḥ) - were decided;]
(As long indeed as there was happiness of the living son of the chief of the Kurus, let him obtain that and enjoyments thus (it) was decided.)
It was decided that, as long as the chief of the Kurus's living son was happy, he should have that happiness and enjoyments. (15-2-9)
ततस्ते सहिताः सर्वे भ्रातरः पञ्च पाण्डवाः। तथाशीलाः समातस्थुर्धृतराष्ट्रस्य शासने ॥१५-२-१०॥
tataste sahitāḥ sarve bhrātaraḥ pañca pāṇḍavāḥ। tathāśīlāḥ samātasthurdhṛtarāṣṭrasya śāsane॥15-2-10॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; ते (te) - they; सहिताः (sahitāḥ) - together; सर्वे (sarve) - all; भ्रातरः (bhrātaraḥ) - brothers; पञ्च (pañca) - five; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - Pāṇḍavas; तथा (tathā) - in like manner; शीलाः (śīlāḥ) - in disposition; सम्-आतस्थुः (sam-ātasthuḥ) - they remained; धृतराष्ट्रस्य (dhṛtarāṣṭrasya) - of Dhṛtarāṣṭra; शासने (śāsane) - under rule;]
(Then they, together, all brothers, the five Pāṇḍavas, with such disposition, remained under the rule of Dhṛtarāṣṭra.)
Then all five Pāṇḍava brothers, remaining united and of such character, stayed under Dhṛtarāṣṭra's rule. (15-2-10)
धृतराष्ट्रश्च तान्वीरान्विनीतान्विनये स्थितान्। शिष्यवृत्तौ स्थितान्नित्यं गुरुवत्पर्यपश्यत ॥१५-२-११॥
dhṛtarāṣṭraś ca tān vīrān vinītān vinaye sthitān। śiṣyavṛttau sthitān nityaṃ guru-vat paryapaśyat ॥15-2-11॥
[धृतराष्ट्रः (dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ) - Dhritarashtra; च (ca) - and; तान् (tān) - them; वीरान् (vīrān) - heroes; विनीतान् (vinītān) - trained; विनये (vinaye) - in discipline; स्थितान् (sthitān) - standing; शिष्यवृत्तौ (śiṣya-vṛttau) - in the conduct of pupils; स्थितान् (sthitān) - abiding; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; गुरुवत् (guru-vat) - like a teacher; पर्यपश्यत् (paryapaśyat) - he beheld;]
(Dhritarashtra and them, the heroes, trained, standing in discipline, abiding in the conduct of pupils, always, like a teacher, he beheld.)
And Dhritarashtra beheld those heroes, trained and standing in discipline, abiding always in the conduct of pupils, as a teacher would. (15-2-11)
गान्धारी चैव पुत्राणां विविधैः श्राद्धकर्मभिः। आनृण्यमगमत्कामान्विप्रेभ्यः प्रतिपाद्य वै ॥१५-२-१२॥
gāndhārī caiva putrāṇāṃ vividhaiḥ śrāddhakarmabhiḥ। ānṛṇyam agamat kāmān viprebhyaḥ pratipādya vai ॥15-2-12॥
[गान्धारी (gāndhārī) - Gandhari; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; पुत्राणां (putrāṇām) - of (her) sons; विविधैः (vividhaiḥ) - by various; श्राद्धकर्मभिः (śrāddhakarmabhiḥ) - by śrāddha rites; आनृण्यम् (ānṛṇyam) - freedom from debt; अगमत् (agamat) - attained; कामान् (kāmān) - desires; विप्रेभ्यः (viprebhyaḥ) - unto the Brāhmaṇas; प्रतिपाद्य (pratipādya) - having given; वै (vai) - indeed;]
(Gandhari indeed, of (her) sons, by various śrāddha rites, freedom from debt attained, desires, to the Brāhmaṇas, having given, indeed.)
Gandhari, indeed, having performed various śrāddha rites for her sons and having given gifts to the Brāhmaṇas as desired, truly attained freedom from debt. (15-2-12)
एवं धर्मभृतां श्रेष्ठो धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः। भ्रातृभिः सहितो धीमान्पूजयामास तं नृपम् ॥१५-२-१३॥
evaṁ dharmabhṛtāṁ śreṣṭho dharmarājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ. bhrātṛbhiḥ sahito dhīmān pūjayāmāsa taṁ nṛpam ॥15-2-13॥
[एवं (evaṁ) - thus; धर्मभृतां (dharmabhṛtām) - of the upholders of dharma; श्रेष्ठः (śreṣṭhaḥ) - the best; धर्मराजः (dharmarājaḥ) - the king of dharma; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhisthira; भ्रातृभिः (bhrātṛbhiḥ) - with (his) brothers; सहितः (sahitaḥ) - accompanied; धीमान् (dhīmān) - wise; पूजयामास (pūjayāmāsa) - honored; तम् (tam) - him; नृपम् (nṛpam) - king;]
(Thus, the best of the upholders of dharma, king Yudhisthira, accompanied by his brothers, the wise one, honored that king.)
Thus, king Yudhisthira, the foremost of those upholding dharma, together with his brothers, respectfully honored that ruler. (15-2-13)
