ततः प्रासादहर्म्येषु वसुधायां च पार्थिव। स्त्रीणां च पुरुषाणां च सुमहान्निस्वनोऽभवत् ॥१५-२२-१॥
tataḥ prāsādaharmyeṣu vasudhāyāṃ ca pārthiva। strīṇāṃ ca puruṣāṇāṃ ca sumahānnisvano'bhavat ॥15-22-1॥

स राजा राजमार्गेण नृनारीसङ्कुलेन च। कथञ्चिन्निर्ययौ धीमान्वेपमानः कृताञ्जलिः ॥१५-२२-२॥
sa rājā rājamārgeṇa nṛ-nārī-saṅkulena ca. kathaṁcit niryayau dhīmān vepamānaḥ kṛtāñjaliḥ ॥15-22-2॥
[स (sa) - he; राजा (rājā) - the king; राजमार्गेण (rājamārgeṇa) - by the royal road; नृनारीसङ्कुलेन (nṛ-nārī-saṅkulena) - crowded with men and women; च (ca) - and; कथञ्चित् (kathaṁcit) - somehow; निर्ययौ (niryayau) - went out; धीमान् (dhīmān) - wise; वेपमानः (vepamānaḥ) - trembling; कृताञ्जलिः (kṛtāñjaliḥ) - with joined palms;]

स वर्धमानद्वारेण निर्ययौ गजसाह्वयात्। विसर्जयामास च तं जनौघं स मुहुर्मुहुः ॥१५-२२-३॥
sa vardhamānadvāreṇa niryayau gajasāhvayāt। visarjayāmāsa ca taṃ janaughaṃ sa muhurmuhuḥ ॥15-22-3॥

(He through the Vardhamāna gate departed from Gajasāhvaya; dismissed and that multitude of people he again and again.)
He departed from Gajasāhvaya through the Vardhamāna gate, and again and again dismissed that multitude of people. (15-22-3)
वनं गन्तुं च विदुरो राज्ञा सह कृतक्षणः। सञ्जयश्च महामात्रः सूतो गावल्गणिस्तथा ॥१५-२२-४॥
vanaṃ gantuṃ ca viduro rājñā saha kṛtakṣaṇaḥ. sañjayaśca mahāmātraḥ sūto gāvalgaṇistathā ॥15-22-4॥

कृपं निवर्तयामास युयुत्सुं च महारथम्। धृतराष्ट्रो महीपालः परिदाय युधिष्ठिरे ॥१५-२२-५॥
kṛpaṃ nivartayāmāsa yuyutsuṃ ca mahā-ratham। dhṛtarāṣṭro mahī-pālaḥ paridāya yudhiṣṭhire ॥15-22-5॥

King Dhṛtarāṣṭra entrusted the great chariot-warriors Kṛpa and Yuyutsu to Yudhiṣṭhira and caused them to turn back. (15-22-5)
निवृत्ते पौरवर्गे तु राजा सान्तःपुरस्तदा। धृतराष्ट्राभ्यनुज्ञातो निवर्तितुमियेष सः ॥१५-२२-६॥
nivṛtte pauravarge tu rājā sāntaḥpurastadā। dhṛtarāṣṭrābhyanujñāto nivartitumiyeṣa saḥ ॥15-22-6॥
[निवृत्ते (nivṛtte) - having departed; पौरवर्गे (pauravarge) - citizen-group; तु (tu) - but; राजा (rājā) - the king; सान्तःपुरः (sāntaḥpuraḥ) - together with the royal women; तदा (tadā) - then; धृतराष्ट्र-अभ्यनुज्ञातः (dhṛtarāṣṭra-abhyanujñātaḥ) - having been permitted by Dhṛtarāṣṭra; निवर्तितुम् (nivartitum) - to return; इयेष (iyeṣa) - wished; सः (saḥ) - he;]
(Having departed, the citizen-group but the king together with the royal women then, having been permitted by Dhṛtarāṣṭra, to return wished he.)
But after the group of citizens had departed, then the king, along with the women of the inner palace, wished to return, having been permitted by Dhṛtarāṣṭra. (15-22-6)
सोऽब्रवीन्मातरं कुन्तीमुपेत्य भरतर्षभ। अहं राजानमन्विष्ये भवती विनिवर्तताम् ॥१५-२२-७॥
so'bravīn mātaraṃ kuntīm upetya bharatarṣabha। ahaṃ rājānam anv-iṣye bhavatī vinivartatām ॥15-22-7॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; मातरम् (mātaram) - to mother; कुन्तीम् (kuntīm) - Kunti; उपेत्य (upetya) - having approached; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of the Bharatas; अहम् (aham) - I; राजानम् (rājānam) - king; अन्विष्ये (anviṣye) - I will seek; भवती (bhavatī) - you (respectful to a lady); विनिवर्तताम् (vinivartatām) - should return (may return);]
(He said to mother Kunti, having approached her, O best of the Bharatas. I will seek the king; you may return.)
He approached his mother Kunti and said, "O best of the Bharatas, I will search for the king; you may return." (15-22-7)
वधूपरिवृता राज्ञि नगरं गन्तुमर्हसि। राजा यात्वेष धर्मात्मा तपसे धृतनिश्चयः ॥१५-२२-८॥
vadhūparivṛtā rājñi nagaraṁ gantumarhasi. rājā yātveṣa dharmātmā tapase dhṛtaniścayaḥ ॥15-22-8॥
[वधू-परिवृता (vadhū-parivṛtā) - surrounded by the bride; राज्ञि (rājñi) - O queen; नगरम् (nagaraṁ) - city; गन्तुम् (gantum) - to go; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought; राजा (rājā) - the king; यातु (yātu) - let (him) go; एष (eṣa) - this (king); धर्मात्मा (dharmātmā) - righteous; तपसे (tapase) - for austerity; धृत-निश्चयः (dhṛta-niścayaḥ) - firm in resolve;]
(Surrounded by the bride, O queen, to the city you ought to go. The king, this righteous one, let him go for austerity, firm in resolve. (15-22-8))
O queen, you ought to go to the city, surrounded by the bride. As for the king—this righteous man—let him, resolved and firm, go for his austerity. (15-22-8)
इत्युक्ता धर्मराजेन बाष्पव्याकुललोचना। जगादैवं तदा कुन्ती गान्धारीं परिगृह्य ह ॥१५-२२-९॥
ityuktā dharmarājena bāṣpavyākulalocanā। jagādaivaṃ tadā kuntī gāndhārīṃ parigṛhya ha॥15-22-9॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्ता (uktā) - having been addressed; धर्मराजेन (dharmarājena) - by Dharmarāja; बाष्पव्याकुललोचना (bāṣpavyākulalocanā) - with eyes filled with tears; जगाद (jagāda) - she spoke; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; तदा (tadā) - then; कुन्ती (kuntī) - Kuntī; गान्धारीं (gāndhārīṃ) - Gāndhārī; परिगृह्य (parigṛhya) - having embraced; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(Thus having been addressed by Dharmarāja, with eyes filled with tears, she spoke thus then, Kuntī, having embraced Gāndhārī, indeed.)
Thus, having been addressed by Dharmarāja, Kuntī, her eyes filled with tears, embraced Gāndhārī and then spoke thus. (15-22-9)
सहदेवे महाराज मा प्रमादं कृथाः क्वचित्। एष मामनुरक्तो हि राजंस्त्वां चैव नित्यदा ॥१५-२२-१०॥
sahadeve mahārāja mā pramādaṁ kṛthāḥ kvacit। eṣa māmanurakto hi rājaṁstvāṁ caiva nityadā ॥15-22-10॥
[सहदेवे (sahadeve) - with Sahadeva; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; मा (mā) - do not; प्रमादं (pramādaṁ) - negligence; कृथाः (kṛthāḥ) - perform; क्वचित् (kvacit) - at any time; एष (eṣa) - this (person); माम् (mām) - me; अनुरक्तः (anuraktaḥ) - attached; हि (hi) - indeed; राजन् (rājan) - O king; त्वां (tvām) - to you; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - only; नित्यदा (nityadā) - always;]
(With Sahadeva, O great king, do not perform negligence at any time. This person is indeed attached to me and to you only always.)
O great king, with Sahadeva, never be negligent at any time. For this one is always devoted to both me and you. (15-22-10)
कर्णं स्मरेथाः सततं सङ्ग्रामेष्वपलायिनम्। अवकीर्णो हि स मया वीरो दुष्प्रज्ञया तदा ॥१५-२२-११॥
karṇaṃ smarethāḥ satataṃ saṅgrāmeṣvapalāyinam। avakīrṇo hi sa mayā vīro duṣprajñayā tadā ॥15-22-11॥

(Karna you should remember always in battles as one not fleeing. Discomfited indeed he by me, the hero, by foolishness then.)
You should always remember Karna in battles as one who never fled. Indeed, at that time, he was defeated by me, the hero, due to my poor judgment. (15-22-11)
आयसं हृदयं नूनं मन्दाया मम पुत्रक। यत्सूर्यजमपश्यन्त्याः शतधा न विदीर्यते ॥१५-२२-१२॥
āyasaṁ hṛdayaṁ nūnaṁ mandāyā mama putraka। yat sūryajam apaśyantyāḥ śatadhā na vidīryate ॥15-22-12॥
[आयसं (āyasaṁ) (āyasaṁ) - iron; steel; हृदयं (hṛdayaṁ) (hṛdayaṁ) - heart; नूनं (nūnaṁ) (nūnaṁ) - certainly; surely; मन्दाया (mandāyā) (mandāyā) - of the dull; slow-witted; foolish one; मम (mama) (mama) - my; पुत्रक (putraka) (putraka) - O son; यत् (yat) (yat) - because; which; सूर्यजम् (sūryajam) (sūryajam) - born of the Sun; (i.e., referring to Sītā; अपश्यन्त्याः (apaśyantyāḥ) (apaśyantyāḥ) - of the one not seeing; शतधा (śatadhā) (śatadhā) - in a hundred ways; into a hundred pieces; न (na) (na) - not; विदीर्यते (vidīryate) (vidīryate) - is torn apart;]
(Certainly, the heart of the foolish one, O son, is iron, because, not seeing the daughter of the Sun, it is not torn apart in a hundred ways.)
O son, truly the heart of your foolish mother must be of iron, for, though she does not see the daughter of the Sun, it does not shatter into a hundred pieces. (15-22-12)
एवङ्गते तु किं शक्यं मया कर्तुमरिंदम। मम दोषोऽयमत्यर्थं ख्यापितो यन्न सूर्यजः ॥ तन्निमित्तं महाबाहो दानं दद्यास्त्वमुत्तमम् ॥१५-२२-१३॥
evaṅgate tu kiṃ śakyaṃ mayā kartumarindama। mama doṣo'ayam atyarthaṃ khyāpito yan na sūryajaḥ॥ tanni mittaṃ mahābāho dānaṃ dadyāstvamutamam॥15-22-13॥
[एवङ्गते (evaṅ-gate) - in this situation; तु (tu) - but; किं (kiṃ) - what; शक्यं (śakyaṃ) - possible; मया (mayā) - by me; कर्तुम् (kartum) - to do; अरिंदम (ariṃdama) - O subduer of enemies; मम (mama) - my; दोषः (doṣaḥ) - fault; अयम् (ayam) - this; अत्यर्थं (atyarthaṃ) - excessively; ख्यापितः (khyāpitaḥ) - revealed; यत् (yat) - that; न (na) - not; सूर्यजः (sūryajaḥ) - Sun-born (Karna); तत् (tat) - that; निमित्तं (nimittaṃ) - on account of; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed; दानं (dānam) - gift; दद्याः (dadyāḥ) - you may give; त्वम् (tvam) - you; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - excellent;]
(In this situation but what is possible by me to do, O subduer of enemies? My fault this excessively revealed, that not (by) Sun-born (Karna). On account of that, O mighty-armed, a gift may you give—excellent.)
But in this situation, O subduer of enemies, what can I do? My fault has been excessively exposed because the son of the Sun did not (do so). Therefore, O mighty-armed, you should give an excellent gift for that reason. (15-22-13)
सदैव भ्रातृभिः सार्धमग्रजस्यारिमर्दन। द्रौपद्याश्च प्रिये नित्यं स्थातव्यमरिकर्शन ॥१५-२२-१४॥
sadaiva bhrātṛbhiḥ sārdhamagrajasya arimardana. draupadyāś ca priye nityaṃ sthātavyam arikarśana ॥15-22-14॥
[सदैव (sadaiva) - always; भ्रातृभिः (bhrātṛbhiḥ) - with brothers; सार्धम् (sārdham) - together with; अग्रजस्य (agrajasya) - of the eldest; अरिमर्दन (arimardana) - O crusher of enemies; द्रौपद्याः (draupadyāḥ) - of Draupadī; च (ca) - and; प्रिये (priye) - O beloved; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; स्थातव्यम् (sthātavyam) - it should be maintained/abided; अरिकर्शन (arikarśana) - O afflicter of enemies;]
(Always, with brothers, together with the eldest, O crusher of enemies; of Draupadī, and O beloved, always, it should be abided, O afflicter of enemies.)
O afflicter of enemies, always remain together with your brothers and the eldest one; and, O beloved, always stay devoted to Draupadī. (15-22-14)
भीमसेनार्जुनौ चैव नकुलश्च कुरूद्वह। समाधेयास्त्वया वीर त्वय्यद्य कुलधूर्गता ॥१५-२२-१५॥
bhīmasenārjunau caiva nakulaś ca kurūdvaha। samādheyās tvayā vīra tvayy adya kuladhūrgatā ॥15-22-15॥
[भीमसेनार्जुनौ (bhīmasenārjunau) - Bhīmasena and Arjuna; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; नकुलः (nakulaḥ) - Nakula; च (ca) - and; कुरूद्वह (kurūdvaha) - O carrier of the Kurus (Yudhiṣṭhira); समाधेयाः (samādheyāḥ) - to be appeased; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; वीर (vīra) - O hero; त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; अद्य (adya) - today; कुलधूः (kuladhūḥ) - the woman of the family (Draupadī); गता (gatā) - has gone;]
(Bhīmasena and Arjuna and indeed Nakula and, O carrier of the Kurus, are to be appeased by you, O hero; in you today the family woman has gone.)
Bhīmasena, Arjuna, and Nakula, O Yudhiṣṭhira, should be appeased by you, O hero, for today Draupadī has taken shelter in you. (15-22-15)
श्वश्रूश्वशुरयोः पादाञ्शुश्रूषन्ती वने त्वहम्। गान्धारीसहिता वत्स्ये तापसी मलपङ्किनी ॥१५-२२-१६॥
śvaśrū-śvaśurayoḥ pādān śuśrūṣantī vane tv aham। gāndhārī-sahitā vatsye tāpasī mala-paṅkinī ॥15-22-16॥
[श्वश्रूश्वशुरयोः (śvaśrū-śvaśurayoḥ) - of mother-in-law and father-in-law; पादान् (pādān) - feet; शुश्रूषन्ती (śuśrūṣantī) - serving; वने (vane) - in the forest; त्व (tv) - you; अहम् (aham) - I; गान्धारीसहिता (gāndhārī-sahitā) - together with Gandhari; वत्स्ये (vatsye) - I will dwell; तापसी (tāpasī) - ascetic woman; मलपङ्किनी (mala-paṅkinī) - smeared with dirt;]
(Of mother-in-law and father-in-law feet serving, in the forest you, I, together with Gandhari, I will dwell, ascetic woman, smeared with dirt.)
I will serve the feet of my mother-in-law and father-in-law in the forest, O you; living with Gandhari, I will dwell as an ascetic woman, smeared with dirt. (15-22-16)
एवमुक्तः स धर्मात्मा भ्रातृभिः सहितो वशी। विषादमगमत्तीव्रं न च किञ्चिदुवाच ह ॥१५-२२-१७॥
evam uktaḥ sa dharmātmā bhrātṛbhiḥ sahito vaśī। viṣādam agamattīvraṃ na ca kiñcid uvāca ha ॥15-22-17॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - addressed; स (sa) - he; धर्मात्मा (dharmātmā) - righteous-souled; भ्रातृभिः (bhrātṛbhiḥ) - by brothers; सहितः (sahitaḥ) - accompanied; वशी (vaśī) - self-controlled; विषादम् (viṣādam) - depression; अगमत् (agamāt) - reached; तीव्रं (tīvram) - intense; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; उवाच (uvāca) - he said; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(Thus addressed, he, the righteous-souled, accompanied by brothers, self-controlled, intense depression reached, and not anything he said indeed.)
Thus addressed, the righteous-souled and self-controlled man, accompanied by his brothers, fell into intense depression and did not say anything at all. (15-22-17)
स मुहूर्तमिव ध्यात्वा धर्मपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः। उवाच मातरं दीनश्चिन्ताशोकपरायणः ॥१५-२२-१८॥
sa muhūrtam iva dhyātvā dharmaputro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। uvāca mātaraṃ dīnaś cintāśokaparāyaṇaḥ॥15-22-18॥

(He, having meditated for a moment, the son of Dharma, Yudhishthira, distressed, given over to worry and grief, spoke to (his) mother.)
He, Yudhishthira, the son of Dharma, spent a moment in meditation, and overwhelmed with sorrow and anxiety, spoke to his mother. (15-22-18)
किमिदं ते व्यवसितं नैवं त्वं वक्तुमर्हसि। न त्वामभ्यनुजानामि प्रसादं कर्तुमर्हसि ॥१५-२२-१९॥
kim idaṁ te vyavasitaṁ na evaṁ tvaṁ vaktum arhasi। na tvām abhyanujānāmi prasādaṁ kartum arhasi ॥15-22-19॥
[किम् (kim) - what; इदं (idaṁ) - this; ते (te) - your; व्यवसितम् (vyavasitam) - decision; न (na) - not; एवम् (evam) - thus; त्वम् (tvaṁ) - you; वक्तुम् (vaktum) - to speak; अर्हसि (arhasi) - ought; न (na) - not; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; अभ्यनुजानामि (abhyanujānāmi) - I permit; प्रसादम् (prasādam) - favor; कर्तुम् (kartum) - to do; अर्हसि (arhasi) - ought;]
(What is this your decision? Not thus you ought to speak. Not you I permit. Favor to do you ought.)
What is this decision of yours? You ought not to speak thus. I do not permit you. You ought to show favor. (15-22-19)
व्यरोचयः पुरा ह्यस्मानुत्साह्य प्रियदर्शने। विदुराया वचोभिस्त्वमस्मान्न त्यक्तुमर्हसि ॥१५-२२-२०॥
vyarocayaḥ purā hy asmān utsāhya priyadarśane. vidurāyā vacobhis tvam asmān na tyaktum arhasi ॥15-22-20॥
[व्यरोचयः (vyarocayaḥ) - you delighted; पुरा (purā) - formerly; हि (hi) - indeed; अस्मान् (asmān) - us; उत्साह्य (utsāhya) - encouraging; प्रियदर्शने (priyadarśane) - O beautiful one; विदुराया (vidurāyā) - of Vidura; वचोभिः (vacobhiḥ) - with words; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अस्मान् (asmān) - us; न (na) - not; त्यक्तुम् (tyaktum) - to abandon; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you should;]
(You delighted us formerly indeed, O beautiful one, encouraging (us); you should not abandon us with the words of Vidura.)
Once before, O beautiful one, you inspired and delighted us; you should not abandon us now just because of Vidura's words. (15-22-20)
निहत्य पृथिवीपालान्राज्यं प्राप्तमिदं मया। तव प्रज्ञामुपश्रुत्य वासुदेवान्नरर्षभात् ॥१५-२२-२१॥
nihatya pṛthivī-pālān rājyaṃ prāptam idaṃ mayā। tava prajñām upaśrutya vāsudevāt naraṛṣabhāt ॥15-22-21॥
[निहत्य (nihatya) - having slain; पृथिवीपालान् (pṛthivī-pālān) - the protectors of the earth; राज्यम् (rājyaṃ) - kingdom; प्राप्तम् (prāptam) - attained; इदं (idaṃ) - this; मया (mayā) - by me; तव (tava) - your; प्रज्ञाम् (prajñām) - wisdom; उपश्रुत्य (upaśrutya) - having listened; वासुदेवात् (vāsudevāt) - from Vāsudeva; नरर्षभात् (naraṛṣabhāt) - from the bull among men;]
(Having slain the protectors of the earth, this kingdom has been attained by me; having listened to your wisdom, from Vāsudeva, from the bull among men.)
Having slain the kings of the earth, I have obtained this kingdom by listening to your wisdom, which came from Vāsudeva, the best among men. (15-22-21)
क्व सा बुद्धिरियं चाद्य भवत्या या श्रुता मया। क्षत्रधर्मे स्थितिं ह्युक्त्वा तस्याश्चलितुमिच्छसि ॥१५-२२-२२॥
kva sā buddhir iyaṁ ca ādya bhavatyā yā śrutā mayā। kṣatradharme sthitiṁ hy uktvā tasyāś calitum icchasi॥15-22-22॥
[क्व (kva) - where; सा (sā) - that (feminine); बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - understanding; इयम् (iyam) - this (feminine); च (ca) - and; आद्य (ādya) - now; भवत्या (bhavatyā) - by you; या (yā) - which (feminine); श्रुता (śrutā) - heard; मया (mayā) - by me; क्षत्रधर्मे (kṣatradharme) - in the duty of the kṣatriya; स्थितिम् (sthitim) - firmness; हि (hi) - indeed; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; तस्याः (tasyāḥ) - of that (feminine); चलितुम् (calitum) - to waver; इच्छसि (icchasi) - you wish;]
(Where is that understanding and this current (one) by you, which was heard by me? Having spoken of firmness in kṣatriya duty indeed, you wish to waver from that.)
Where is that understanding, and what is this attitude of yours now? You, who spoke of steadfastness in the duty of a kṣatriya—which I myself heard—now wish to waver from it. (15-22-22)
अस्मानुत्सृज्य राज्यं च स्नुषां चेमां यशस्विनीम्। कथं वत्स्यसि शून्येषु वनेष्वम्ब प्रसीद मे ॥१५-२२-२३॥
asmānut-sṛjya rājyaṃ ca snuṣāṃ ca imāṃ yaśasvinīm। kathaṃ vatsyasi śūnyeṣu vaneṣv amba prasīda me॥15-22-23॥
[अस्मान् (asmān) - us; उत्सृज्य (ut-sṛjya) - having abandoned; राज्यम् (rājyaṃ) - kingdom; च (ca) - and; स्नुषाम् (snuṣām) - daughter-in-law; च (ca) - and; इमाम् (imām) - this; यशस्विनीम् (yaśasvinīm) - illustrious; कथम् (katham) - how; वत्स्यसि (vatsyasi) - will you live; शून्येषु (śūnyeṣu) - in desolate; वनेषु (vaneṣu) - forests; अम्ब (amba) - mother; प्रसीद (prasīda) - be gracious; मे (me) - to me;]
(Having abandoned us and the kingdom and this illustrious daughter-in-law, how will you live in the desolate forests, mother? Be gracious to me.)
Mother, having left us, the kingdom, and this illustrious daughter-in-law, how will you live in the desolate forests? Please have mercy on me. (15-22-23)
इति बाष्पकलां वाचं कुन्ती पुत्रस्य शृण्वती। जगामैवाश्रुपूर्णाक्षी भीमस्तामिदमब्रवीत् ॥१५-२२-२४॥
iti bāṣpakalāṃ vācaṃ kuntī putrasya śṛṇvatī. jagāmaiva aśru-pūrṇa-akṣī bhīmas tām idam abravīt ॥15-22-24॥
[इति (iti) - thus; बाष्पकलां (bāṣpakalām) - voice choked with tears; वाचं (vācam) - speech; कुन्ती (kuntī) - Kuntī; पुत्रस्य (putrasya) - of the son; शृण्वती (śṛṇvatī) - hearing; जगाम् (jagāma) - went; एव (eva) - just, only; अश्रुपूर्णाक्षी (aśru-pūrṇa-akṣī) - her eyes filled with tears; भीमः (bhīmaḥ) - Bhīma; ताम् (tām) - to her; इदम् (idam) - these (words); अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said;]
(Thus, the speech choked with tears, the voice of Kuntī's son, hearing (it), she, her eyes filled with tears, just went; Bhīma to her these (words) said.)
Hearing her son's speech, choked with tears, Kuntī, her eyes filled with tears, departed; then Bhīma spoke these words to her. (15-22-24)
यदा राज्यमिदं कुन्ति भोक्तव्यं पुत्रनिर्जितम्। प्राप्तव्या राजधर्माश्च तदेयं ते कुतो मतिः ॥१५-२२-२५॥
yadā rājyam idaṁ kunti bhoktavyam putranirjitam। prāptavyā rājadarmāś ca tad eyaṁ te kuto matiḥ ॥15-22-25॥
[यदा (yadā) - when; राज्यम् (rājyam) - kingdom; इदं (idaṁ) - this; कुन्ति (kunti) - Kunti (O Kunti); भोक्तव्यम् (bhoktavyam) - to be enjoyed; पुत्रनिर्जितम् (putranirjitam) - conquered by (your) son; प्राप्तव्या (prāptavyā) - to be attained; राजधर्माः (rājadarmāḥ) - royal duties; च (ca) - and; तत् (tat) - that; इयम् (iyam) - this; ते (te) - your; कुतः (kutaḥ) - whence; from where; मतिः (matiḥ) - thought; mind;]
(When this kingdom, O Kunti, conquered by (your) son, is to be enjoyed, and royal duties are to be attained, that this is your thought—from where?)
O Kunti, when this kingdom, conquered by your son, is to be enjoyed and the royal duties are to be fulfilled, why do you entertain such a thought? (15-22-25)
किं वयं कारिताः पूर्वं भवत्या पृथिवीक्षयम्। कस्य हेतोः परित्यज्य वनं गन्तुमभीप्ससि ॥१५-२२-२६॥
kiṁ vayaṁ kāritāḥ pūrvaṁ bhavatyā pṛthivīkṣayam। kasya hetoḥ parityajya vanaṁ gantumabhipsasi ॥15-22-26॥
[किं (kiṁ) - what; वयं (vayaṁ) - we; कारिताः (kāritāḥ) - have been made (to do); पूर्वं (pūrvaṁ) - previously; भवत्या (bhavatyā) - by you; पृथिवीक्षयम् (pṛthivīkṣayam) - the conquest of the earth; कस्य (kasya) - for what; हेतोः (hetoḥ) - reason; परित्यज्य (parityajya) - having renounced; वनम् (vanam) - the forest; गन्तुम् (gantum) - to go; अभीप्ससि (abhipsasi) - do you wish;]
(What we have been made (to do) previously by you is the conquest of the earth; for what reason, having renounced, to the forest to go do you wish?)
Previously, you made us conquer the earth; for what reason do you now wish to abandon it and go to the forest? (15-22-26)
वनाच्चापि किमानीता भवत्या बालका वयम्। दुःखशोकसमाविष्टौ माद्रीपुत्राविमौ तथा ॥१५-२२-२७॥
vanāccāpi kimānītā bhavatyā bālakā vayam। duḥkhaśokasamāviṣṭau mādrīputrāvimau tathā ॥15-22-27॥
[वनात् (vanāt) - from the forest; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; किम् (kim) - why; आनीता (ānītā) - brought; भवत्या (bhavatyā) - by you (feminine, instrumental singular); बालका (bālakā) - children; वयम् (vayam) - we; दुःख-शोक-समाविष्टौ (duḥkha-śoka-samāviṣṭau) - overwhelmed by sorrow and grief; माद्री-पुत्रौ (mādrī-putrau) - Mādrī's sons; इमौ (imau) - these two; तथा (tathā) - also;]
(From the forest and also why brought by you (the) children we, overwhelmed by sorrow and grief, Mādrī's sons, these two also.)
And from the forest, why have you brought us children? These two sons of Mādrī also are overwhelmed with sorrow and grief. (15-22-27)
प्रसीद मातर्मा गास्त्वं वनमद्य यशस्विनि। श्रियं यौधिष्ठिरीं तावद्भुङ्क्ष्व पार्थबलार्जिताम् ॥१५-२२-२८॥
prasīda mātar mā gās tvaṃ vanam adya yaśasvini। śriyaṃ yaudhiṣṭhirīṃ tāvad bhuṅkṣva pārtha-balārjitām ॥15-22-28॥
[प्रसीद (prasīda) - be gracious; मातर् (mātar) - O mother; मा (mā) - do not; गाः (gās) - go; त्वम् (tvaṃ) - you; वनम् (vanam) - to the forest; अद्य (adya) - today; यशस्विनि (yaśasvini) - O glorious one; श्रियम् (śriyam) - prosperity; यौधिष्ठिरीम् (yaudhiṣṭhirīm) - belonging to Yudhishthira; तावत् (tāvat) - so long; भुङ्क्ष्व (bhuṅkṣva) - enjoy; पार्थबलार्जिताम् (pārtha-balārjitām) - acquired by the strength of the sons of Pritha;]
(Be gracious, O mother, do not go you to the forest today, O glorious one. Prosperity belonging to Yudhishthira, so long, enjoy, acquired by the strength of the sons of Pritha. (15-22-28))
Be gracious, O mother, do not go to the forest today, O illustrious one. Enjoy for now the prosperity of Yudhishthira, earned by the might of the sons of Pritha. (15-22-28)
इति सा निश्चितैवाथ वनवासकृतक्षणा। लालप्यतां बहुविधं पुत्राणां नाकरोद्वचः ॥१५-२२-२९॥
iti sā niścitāiva atha vanavāsa-kṛta-kṣaṇā। lālapyatāṃ bahuvidhaṃ putrāṇāṃ na akarot vacaḥ ॥15-22-29॥
[इति (iti) - thus; सा (sā) - she; निश्चितैव (niścitā eva) - having resolved; indeed; अथ (atha) - then; वनवासकृतक्षणा (vanavāsa-kṛta-kṣaṇā) - prepared (having made ready) for forest-dwelling; लालप्यतां (lālapyatām) - as being pleaded (with); बहुविधं (bahuvidham) - in many ways; पुत्राणां (putrāṇām) - of the sons; न (na) - not; अकरोत् (akarot) - she did; वचः (vacaḥ) - word;]
(Thus she, having resolved indeed, then, prepared for forest-dwelling, as being pleaded with in many ways by the sons, did not make word.)
Thus, she, having firmly resolved and made preparations for dwelling in the forest, did not respond to the many entreaties of her sons. (15-22-29)
द्रौपदी चान्वयाच्छ्वश्रूं विषण्णवदना तदा। वनवासाय गच्छन्तीं रुदती भद्रया सह ॥१५-२२-३०॥
draupadī cānvyayācchvaśrūṃ viṣaṇṇavadanā tadā। vanavāsāya gacchantīṃ rudatī bhadrayā saha॥15-22-30॥
[द्रौपदी (draupadī) - Draupadī; च (ca) - and; अन्वयात् (anvyayāt) - having followed; श्वश्रूं (śvaśrūṃ) - mother-in-law; विषण्णवदना (viṣaṇṇavadanā) - with dejected face; तदा (tadā) - then; वनवासाय (vanavāsāya) - for forest-dwelling; गच्छन्तीं (gacchantīm) - going; रुदती (rudatī) - weeping; भद्रया (bhadrayā) - with Bhadra; सह (saha) - together;]
(Draupadī and also, having followed her mother-in-law, with dejected face then, for forest-dwelling going, weeping together with Bhadra.)
Draupadī then, her face dejected, wept as she followed her mother-in-law, going with Bhadra as they set out for the forest. (15-22-30)
सा पुत्रान्रुदतः सर्वान्मुहुर्मुहुरवेक्षती। जगामैव महाप्राज्ञा वनाय कृतनिश्चया ॥१५-२२-३१॥
sā putrān rudataḥ sarvān muhur muhur avekṣatī. jagāmaiva mahāprājñā vanāya kṛtaniścayā ॥15-22-31॥
[सा (sā) (sā) - she; पुत्रान् (putrān) (putrān) - sons (accusative plural); रुदतः (rudataḥ) (rudataḥ) - weeping; सर्वान् (sarvān) (sarvān) - all; मुहुः मुहुः (muhur muhur) (muhur muhur) - again and again; अवेक्षती (avekṣatī) (avekṣatī) - looking at; जगाम (jagāma) (jagāma) - went; एव (eva) (eva) - indeed; महाप्राज्ञा (mahāprājñā) (mahāprājñā) - the very wise; वनाय (vanāya) (vanāya) - to the forest; कृतनिश्चया (kṛtaniścayā) (kṛtaniścayā) - having made up her mind;]
(She, sons weeping all again and again looking at, went indeed the very wise to the forest, having made up her mind.)
She, the very wise, repeatedly looking at all her sons who were weeping, went to the forest with her mind made up. (15-22-31)
अन्वयुः पाण्डवास्तां तु सभृत्यान्तःपुरास्तदा। ततः प्रमृज्य साश्रूणि पुत्रान्वचनमब्रवीत् ॥१५-२२-३२॥
anvayuḥ pāṇḍavās tāṃ tu sabhṛtyāntaḥpurās tadā। tataḥ pramṛjya sāśrūṇi putrān vacanam abravīt ॥15-22-32॥
[अन्वयुः (anvayuḥ) - followed; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; तां (tāṃ) - her; तु (tu) - but; सभृत्य (sabhṛtya) - with attendants; अन्तःपुराः (antaḥpurāḥ) - the women of the inner apartments; तदा (tadā) - then; ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्रमृज्य (pramṛjya) - wiping; साश्रूणि (sāśrūṇi) - her tears; पुत्रान् (putrān) - sons; वचनम् (vacanam) - words; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said;]
(The Pāṇḍavas followed her but with attendants and the women of the inner apartments then. Then, wiping her tears, to her sons, she spoke words.)
The Pāṇḍavas, along with the attendants and women of the inner quarters, then followed her. Then, having wiped her tears, she spoke to her sons. (15-22-32)
