tataḥ prabhāte rājā sa dhṛtarāṣṭro’mbikāsutaḥ। āhūya pāṇḍavān vīrān vanavāsakṛtakṣaṇaḥ ॥15-21-1॥

Then, at dawn, King Dhritarashtra, the son of Ambika, summoned the heroic Pāṇḍavas, who were preparing for exile. (15-21-1)
गान्धारीसहितो धीमानभिनन्द्य यथाविधि। कार्त्तिक्यां कारयित्वेष्टिं ब्राह्मणैर्वेदपारगैः ॥१५-२१-२॥
gāndhārīsahito dhīmān abhinandya yathāvidhi। kārttikyāṃ kārayitvetiṃ brāhmaṇair vedapāragaiḥ ॥15-21-2॥

(Together with Gandhari, the wise one, having honored according to the rule, in Karttika, having had performed the sacrifice by Brahmanas versed in the Vedas.)
The wise one, together with Gandhari, having honored the Brahmanas according to rule, had a sacrifice performed in the month of Karttika by those well-versed in the Vedas. (15-21-2)
अग्निहोत्रं पुरस्कृत्य वल्कलाजिनसंवृतः। वधूपरिवृतो राजा निर्ययौ भवनात्ततः ॥१५-२१-३॥

Having placed the Agnihotra ritual in front, the king, clad in bark and deerskin and surrounded by his bride, then departed from the house. (15-21-3)
ततः स्त्रियः कौरवपाण्डवानां; याश्चाप्यन्याः कौरवराजवंश्याः। तासां नादः प्रादुरासीत्तदानीं; वैचित्रवीर्ये नृपतौ प्रयाते ॥१५-२१-४॥
tataḥ striyaḥ kauravapāṇḍavānāṃ; yāś cāpy anyāḥ kauravarājavaṃśyāḥ. tāsāṃ nādaḥ prādur āsīt tadānīṃ; vaicitryavīrye nṛpatau prayāte ॥15-21-4॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; स्त्रियः (striyaḥ) - women; कौरवपाण्डवानां (kauravapāṇḍavānām) - of the Kauravas and Pāṇḍavas; याः (yāḥ) - who; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अन्याः (anyāḥ) - other; कौरवराजवंश्याः (kauravarājavaṃśyāḥ) - of the lineage of Kaurava kings; तासां (tāsāṃ) - of them; नादः (nādaḥ) - cry; प्रादुरासीत्तदानीं (prādur āsīt tadānīṃ) - arose at that time; वैचित्रवीर्ये (vaicitryavīrye) - when Vicitravīrya; नृपतौ (nṛpatau) - the king; प्रयाते (prayāte) - had departed;]
(Then the women of the Kauravas and Pāṇḍavas, and also other women of the Kaurava royal lineage—their cry arose at that time, when King Vicitravīrya had departed.)
Then, when King Vicitravīrya had departed, the women of the Kauravas and Pāṇḍavas, along with other women of the Kaurava royal lineage, their wail arose at that time. (15-21-4)
ततो लाजैः सुमनोभिश्च राजा; विचित्राभिस्तद्गृहं पूजयित्वा। संयोज्यार्थैर्भृत्यजनं च सर्वं; ततः समुत्सृज्य ययौ नरेन्द्रः ॥१५-२१-५॥
tato lājaiḥ sumanobhiś ca rājā; vicitrābhiḥ tad-gṛham pūjayitvā. saṃyojyārthair bhṛtyajanaṃ ca sarvaṃ; tataḥ samutsṛjya yayau narendraḥ ॥15-21-5॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; लाजैः (lājaiḥ) - with offerings of parched grain; सुमनोभिः (sumanobhiḥ) - with auspicious flowers; च (ca) - and; राजा (rājā) - the king; विचित्राभिः (vicitrābhiḥ) - with various (things); तत् (tat) - that; गृहम् (gṛham) - house; पूजयित्वा (pūjayitvā) - having worshipped; संयोज्यार्थैः (saṃyojyārthaiḥ) - with things to be distributed/united; भृत्यजनम् (bhṛtyajanam) - servant-people; च (ca) - and; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; ततः (tataḥ) - then; समुत्सृज्य (samutsṛjya) - having dismissed; ययौ (yayau) - departed; नरेन्द्रः (narendraḥ) - the king;]
(Then, with parched grains and auspicious flowers, and with various things, the king having worshipped that house; with things to be distributed, having united all the servant-people, then having dismissed (them), the king departed.)
Then, the king honored that house with offerings of parched grains, auspicious flowers, and various articles. Having gathered and dismissed all the servants after distributing duties, the king departed. (15-21-5)
ततो राजा प्राञ्जलिर्वेपमानो; युधिष्ठिरः सस्वनं बाष्पकण्ठः। विलप्योच्चैर्हा महाराज साधो; क्व गन्तासीत्यपतत्तात भूमौ ॥१५-२१-६॥
tato rājā prāñjalirvepamāno; yudhiṣṭhiraḥ sasvanaṃ bāṣpakaṇṭhaḥ. vilapyoccairhā mahārāja sādho; kva gantāsītyapatattāta bhūmau ॥15-21-6॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - thereupon; राजा (rājā) - the king; प्राञ्जलिः (prāñjaliḥ) - with folded hands; वेपमानः (vepamānaḥ) - trembling; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhisthira; सस्वनम् (sasvanam) - loudly; बाष्पकण्ठः (bāṣpakaṇṭhaḥ) - with a throat choked with tears; विलप्य (vilapya) - lamenting; उच्चैः (uccaiḥ) - aloud; हा (hā) - alas; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; साधो (sādho) - O noble one; क्व (kva) - where; गन्तासि (gantāsi) - will you go; इति (iti) - thus; अपतत् (apatat) - fell; तात (tāta) - O dear father; भूमौ (bhūmau) - on the ground;]
(Thereupon the king with folded hands, trembling, Yudhisthira, loudly, with a throat choked by tears, lamenting aloud, "Alas, O great king, O noble one, where will you go?"—thus, O dear father, fell on the ground.)
Then King Yudhisthira, trembling with folded hands and a voice choked with tears, cried out loudly, "Alas, O great king, O noble one, where will you go?"—speaking thus, O dear father, he fell to the ground. (15-21-6)
तथार्जुनस्तीव्रदुःखाभितप्तो; मुहुर्मुहुर्निःश्वसन्भारताग्र्यः। युधिष्ठिरं मैवमित्येवमुक्त्वा; निगृह्याथोदीधरत्सीदमानः ॥१५-२१-७॥
tathārjunastīvraduḥkhābhitapto; muhurmuhurniḥśvasanbhāratāgryaḥ। yudhiṣṭhiraṃ maivamityevamuktvā; nigṛhyāthodīdharatsīdamānaḥ ॥15-21-7॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; अर्जुनः (arjunaḥ) - Arjuna; तीव्रदुःखाभितप्तः (tīvraduḥkhābhitaptaḥ) - overwhelmed by intense pain; मुमुर्मुहुः (muhurmuḥuḥ) - again and again; निःश्वसन् (niḥśvasan) - sighing; भारताग्र्यः (bhāratāgryaḥ) - the foremost among the Bharatas; युधिष्ठिरम् (yudhiṣṭhiram) - Yudhiṣṭhira; म एवम् इति एवम् उक्त्वा (ma evam iti evam uktvā) - "do not thus" having thus spoken; निगृह्य (nigṛhya) - restraining; अथ (atha) - then; उदीधरत् (udīdharat) - bore up; सीदमानः (sīdamānaḥ) - fainting;]
(Thus Arjuna, overwhelmed by intense pain, again and again sighing, the foremost of the Bharatas, Yudhiṣṭhira, "do not thus," having thus spoken, restraining, then, bore up, fainting.)
Thus Arjuna, overwhelmed by intense pain, sighed again and again; having said to Yudhiṣṭhira, "Do not [do] thus," restraining himself, he then bore up, though fainting. (15-21-7)
वृकोदरः फल्गुनश्चैव वीरौ; माद्रीपुत्रौ विदुरः सञ्जयश्च। वैश्यापुत्रः सहितो गौतमेन; धौम्यो विप्राश्चान्वयुर्बाष्पकण्ठाः ॥१५-२१-८॥
vṛkodaraḥ phalgunaś caiva vīrau; mādrīputrau viduraḥ sañjayaś ca. vaiśyāputraḥ sahito gautamena; dhaumyo viprāś cānvayur bāṣpakaṇṭhāḥ ॥15-21-8॥
[वृकोदरः (vṛkodaraḥ) - Vṛkodara (Bhīma); फल्गुनः (phalgunaḥ) - Phālguna (Arjuna); च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; वीरौ (vīrau) - the two heroes; माद्रीपुत्रौ (mādrīputrau) - the two sons of Mādrī (Nakula and Sahadeva); विदुरः (viduraḥ) - Vidura; सञ्जयः (sañjayaḥ) - Sañjaya; च (ca) - and; वैश्यापुत्रः (vaiśyāputraḥ) - the son of a Vaiśyā (Yuyutsu); सहितः (sahitaḥ) - together; गौतमेन (gautamena) - with Gautama (Kṛpa); धौम्यः (dhaumyaḥ) - Dhaumya; विप्राः (viprāḥ) - the Brāhmaṇas; च (ca) - and; अन्वयुः (anvayuḥ) - followed; बाष्पकण्ठाः (bāṣpakaṇṭhāḥ) - with throats choked by tears;]
(Vṛkodara, Phālguna indeed and the two heroes; the sons of Mādrī, Vidura and Sañjaya; the son of the Vaiśyā together with Gautama; Dhaumya, the Brāhmaṇas and (they) followed, with throats choked by tears.)
Vṛkodara (Bhīma), Phālguna (Arjuna), both heroes, the sons of Mādrī (Nakula and Sahadeva), Vidura, Sañjaya, the son of a Vaiśyā (Yuyutsu) along with Gautama (Kṛpa), Dhaumya, and the Brāhmaṇas followed, their voices choked with tears. (15-21-8)
कुन्ती गान्धारीं बद्धनेत्रां व्रजन्तीं; स्कन्धासक्तं हस्तमथोद्वहन्ती। राजा गान्धार्याः स्कन्धदेशेऽवसज्य; पाणिं ययौ धृतराष्ट्रः प्रतीतः ॥१५-२१-९॥
kuntī gāndhārīṃ baddhanetrāṃ vrajantīṃ; skandhāsaktaṃ hastamathodvahantī. rājā gāndhāryāḥ skandhadeśe'vasajya; pāṇiṃ yayau dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ pratītaḥ ॥15-21-9॥

(Kuntī, Gāndhārī with bound eyes going, then, leading her hand attached to the shoulder, the king, having placed Gāndhārī's hand on the region of the shoulder, went, Dhṛtarāṣṭra assured.)
Kuntī, as Gāndhārī, her eyes bound, went on—her hand attached to the shoulder, now guided her. The king Dhṛtarāṣṭra, having placed Gāndhārī's hand on his shoulder, went forth with confidence. (15-21-9)
तथा कृष्णा द्रौपदी यादवी च; बालापत्या चोत्तरा कौरवी च। चित्राङ्गदा याश्च काश्चित्स्त्रियोऽन्याः; सार्धं राज्ञा प्रस्थितास्ता वधूभिः ॥१५-२१-१०॥
tathā kṛṣṇā draupadī yādavī ca; bālāpatyā cotarā kauravī ca. citrāṅgadā yāś ca kāścit striyo'nyāḥ; sārdhaṃ rājñā prasthitās tā vadhūbhiḥ ॥15-21-10॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; कृष्णा (kṛṣṇā) - Kṛṣṇā; द्रौपदी (draupadī) - Draupadī; यादवी (yādavī) - Yādavī; च (ca) - and; बालापत्या (bālāpatyā) - with her young offspring; च (ca) - and; उत्तरा (uttarā) - Uttarā; कौरवी (kauravī) - Kauravī; च (ca) - and; चित्राङ्गदा (citrāṅgadā) - Citrāṅgadā; याः (yāḥ) - who; च (ca) - and; काश्चित् (kāścit) - some; स्त्रियः (striyaḥ) - women; अन्याः (anyāḥ) - other; सार्धम् (sārdham) - together with; राज्ञा (rājñā) - with the king; प्रस्थिताः (prasthitāḥ) - set out; ताः (tāḥ) - they; वधूभिः (vadhūbhiḥ) - with the brides;]
(Thus Kṛṣṇā, Draupadī, Yādavī and; along with her child also Uttarā, Kauravī and; Citrāṅgadā, and whomsoever other women; together with the king, they set out with the brides.)
Thus, Kṛṣṇā, Draupadī, Yādavī, and also Uttarā with her child, Kauravī, Citrāṅgadā, and certain other women set out together with the king along with the brides. (15-21-10)
तासां नादो रुदतीनां तदासी; द्राजन्दुःखात्कुररीणामिवोच्चैः। ततो निष्पेतुर्ब्राह्मणक्षत्रियाणां; विट्शूद्राणां चैव नार्यः समन्तात् ॥१५-२१-११॥
tāsāṃ nādo rudatīnāṃ tad āsī; drājan duḥkhāt kurarīṇām iva uccaiḥ. tato niṣpetur brāhmaṇa-kṣatriyāṇāṃ; viṭ-śūdrāṇāṃ ca eva nāryaḥ samantāt. 15-21-11
[तासां (tāsāṃ) (tāsāṃ) - of those (women); नादः (nādaḥ) (nādaḥ) - sound; रुदतीनां (rudatīnāṃ) (rudatīnāṃ) - of the crying (women); तत् (tad) (tad) - that; आसी (āsī) (āsī) - was; द्राजन् (drājan) (drājan) - echoing; दुःखात् (duḥkhāt) (duḥkhāt) - from sorrow; कुररीणाम् (kurarīṇām) (kurarīṇām) - of the kurarī birds (ospreys); इव (iva) (iva) - like; उच्चैः (uccaiḥ) (uccaiḥ) - loud; ततः (tataḥ) (tataḥ) - then; निष्पेतुः (niṣpetuḥ) (niṣpetuḥ) - came out; ब्राह्मणक्षत्रियाणाम् (brāhmaṇa-kṣatriyāṇām) (brāhmaṇa-kṣatriyāṇām) - of the Brāhmaṇas and Kṣatriyas; विट्-शूद्राणाम् (viṭ-śūdrāṇām) (viṭ-śūdrāṇām) - of the Vaiśyas and Śūdras; च (ca) (ca) - and; एव (eva) (eva) - indeed; नार्यः (nāryaḥ) (nāryaḥ) - women; समन्तात् (samantāt) (samantāt) - from all sides;]
(Of those women, the sound of the crying was that—echoing from sorrow, loud like kurarī birds. Then, from among Brāhmaṇas, Kṣatriyas, and also of Vaiśyas and Śūdras, indeed, women came out from all sides.)
The sound of those weeping women was like the loud cries of kurarī birds in grief. Then, from all around, the women of Brāhmaṇas, Kṣatriyas, Vaiśyas, and Śūdras came out. (15-21-11)
तन्निर्याणे दुःखितः पौरवर्गो; गजाह्वयेऽतीव बभूव राजन्। यथा पूर्वं गच्छतां पाण्डवानां; द्यूते राजन्कौरवाणां सभायाम् ॥१५-२१-१२॥
tanniryāṇe duḥkhitaḥ pauravargo; gajāhvaye'tīva babhūva rājan। yathā pūrvaṃ gacchatāṃ pāṇḍavānāṃ; dyūte rājan kauravāṇāṃ sabhāyām ॥15-21-12॥
[तन्निर्याणे (tanniryāṇe) - at that (their) departure; दुःखितः (duḥkhitaḥ) - distressed; पौरवर्गः (pauravargaḥ) - the group of citizens; गजाह्वये (gajāhvaye) - at Hastināpura (lit. Gaja-āhvaya); अतीव (atīva) - extremely; बभूव (babhūva) - became; राजन् (rājan) - O king; यथा (yathā) - just as; पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - previously; गच्छताम् (gacchatām) - while departing (of those going); पाण्डवानाम् (pāṇḍavānām) - of the Pāṇḍavas; द्यूते (dyūte) - in the game (of dice); राजन् (rājan) - O king; कौरवाणाम् (kauravāṇām) - of the Kauravas; सभायाम् (sabhāyām) - in the assembly;]
(At that departure, distressed the group of citizens at Hastināpura became extremely, O king. Just as previously, when departing of the Pāṇḍavas in the game, O king, of the Kauravas in the assembly.)
O king, at their departure, the citizens of Hastināpura became extremely distressed, just as they had earlier when the Pāṇḍavas departed after the dice game in the Kauravas’ assembly. (15-21-12)
या नापश्यच्चन्द्रमा नैव सूर्यो; रामाः कदाचिदपि तस्मिन्नरेन्द्रे। महावनं गच्छति कौरवेन्द्रे; शोकेनार्ता राजमार्गं प्रपेदुः ॥१५-२१-१३॥
yā nāpaśyac candramā naiva sūryo; rāmāḥ kadācid api tasmin nareindre. mahāvanaṃ gacchati kauravendre; śokenārtā rājamārgaṃ prapeduḥ ॥15-21-13॥
[या (yā) (yā) - who; (she); न अपश्यत् (na apaśyat) (na apaśyat) - did not see; चन्द्रमा (candramā) (candramā) - the moon; न एव (na eva) (na eva) - nor indeed; सूर्यः (sūryaḥ) (sūryaḥ) - the sun; रामाः (rāmāḥ) (rāmāḥ) - the queens; (wives of Rāma); कदाचित् अपि (kadācid api) (kadācid api) - even at any time; तस्मिन् नरेन्द्रे (tasmin nareindre) (tasmin nareindre) - in that king; महावनं (mahāvanam) (mahāvanam) - great forest; गच्छति (gacchati) (gacchati) - (he) goes; कौरव-इन्द्रे (kauravendre) (kauravendre) - O king of Kurus; शोकेन आर्ताः (śokenaārtāḥ) (śokenārtāḥ) - afflicted by grief; राजमार्गं (rājamārgam) (rājamārgam) - royal road; प्रपेदुः (prapeduḥ) (prapeduḥ) - they reached;]
(Who neither saw the moon nor the sun, the queens, even at any time, in that king, (as) he goes to the great forest, O king of Kurus, afflicted by grief, the queens reached the royal road.)
The queens, who had never seen either the moon or the sun, when that king of the Kurus departed for the great forest, afflicted by grief, reached the royal road. (15-21-13)
