एवमेतन्महाबाहो यथा वदसि पाण्डव। कृतमुद्धर्षणं पूर्वं मया वः सीदतां नृप ॥१५-२३-१॥
evam etan mahā-bāho yathā vadasi pāṇḍava। kṛtam uddharṣaṇam pūrvam mayā vaḥ sīdatāṃ nṛpa॥15-23-1॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; एतत् (etat) - this; महाबाहो (mahā-bāho) - O mighty-armed; यथा (yathā) - as; वदसि (vadasi) - you say; पाण्डव (pāṇḍava) - O son of Pāṇḍu; कृतम् (kṛtam) - done; उद्धर्षणम् (uddharṣaṇam) - restoration; पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - formerly; मया (mayā) - by me; वः (vaḥ) - for you; सीदताम् (sīdatām) - for those being dejected; नृप (nṛpa) - O king;]
(Thus, O mighty-armed, as you say, O son of Pāṇḍu, the restoration was formerly done by me for you, O king, for those who were being dejected.)
O mighty-armed Pāṇḍava, it is just as you say; previously, O king, I performed the restoration for you when you were in distress. (15-23-1)
द्यूतापहृतराज्यानां पतितानां सुखादपि। ज्ञातिभिः परिभूतानां कृतमुद्धर्षणं मया ॥१५-२३-२॥
dyūtāpahṛtarājyānāṃ patitānāṃ sukhād api। jñātibhiḥ paribhūtānāṃ kṛtam uddharṣaṇaṃ mayā ॥15-23-2॥
[द्यूतापहृतराज्यानां (dyūtāpahṛtarājyānāṃ) - of those whose kingdom was taken away by gambling; पतितानां (patitānāṃ) - of those who have fallen; सुखादपि (sukhād api) - even from happiness; ज्ञातिभिः (jñātibhiḥ) - by kinsmen; परिभूतानां (paribhūtānāṃ) - of those who have been insulted; कृतम् (kṛtam) - done; उद्धर्षणं (uddharṣaṇam) - arousing (courage/uplifting/resetting); मया (mayā) - by me;]
(The uplifting that was done by me for those whose kingdom was taken away by gambling, of those fallen even from happiness, of those who have been insulted by kinsmen.)
I have done the uplifting of those who lost their kingdom by gambling, who had fallen even from happiness, and who were insulted by their own kinsmen. (15-23-2)
कथं पाण्डोर्न नश्येत सन्ततिः पुरुषर्षभाः। यशश्च वो न नश्येत इति चोद्धर्षणं कृतम् ॥१५-२३-३॥
kathaṃ pāṇḍor na naśyet santatiḥ puruṣarṣabhāḥ। yaśaś ca vo na naśyet iti coddharṣaṇaṃ kṛtam ॥15-23-3॥
[कथं (katham) - how; पाण्डोः (pāṇḍoḥ) - of Pāṇḍu; न (na) - not; नश्येत (naśyet) - might perish; सन्ततिः (santatiḥ) - progeny; पुरुषर्षभाः (puruṣarṣabhāḥ) - best of men; यशः (yaśaḥ) - fame; च (ca) - and; वः (vaḥ) - your; न (na) - not; नश्येत (naśyet) - might perish; इति (iti) - thus; च (ca) - and; उद्धर्षणम् (uddharṣaṇam) - encouragement; कृतम् (kṛtam) - was done;]
(How might Pāṇḍu's progeny not perish, O best of men? And how your fame might not perish—thus, encouragement was done.)
How might the progeny of Pāṇḍu not perish, O best of men, and how your fame might not perish—that is why encouragement was given. (15-23-3)
यूयमिन्द्रसमाः सर्वे देवतुल्यपराक्रमाः। मा परेषां मुखप्रेक्षाः स्थेत्येवं तत्कृतं मया ॥१५-२३-४॥
yūyam indra-samāḥ sarve deva-tulya-parākramāḥ। mā pareṣāṃ mukha-prekṣāḥ sthety evaṃ tat kṛtaṃ mayā॥15-23-4॥

(You, equal to Indra, all, whose prowess equals the gods, do not stand looking at the faces of the others—thus, in this way, that has been done by me.)
You are all as powerful as Indra, with valor equal to the gods; do not just stand by watching the faces of others—having so determined, I have acted accordingly. (15-23-4)
कथं धर्मभृतां श्रेष्ठो राजा त्वं वासवोपमः। पुनर्वने न दुःखी स्या इति चोद्धर्षणं कृतम् ॥१५-२३-५॥
kathaṁ dharmabhṛtāṁ śreṣṭho rājā tvaṁ vāsavopamaḥ। punarvane na duḥkhī syā iti coddharṣaṇaṁ kṛtam ॥15-23-5॥
[कथं (kathaṁ) - how; धर्मभृतां (dharmabhṛtām) - of the upholders of dharma; श्रेष्ठः (śreṣṭhaḥ) - the best; राजा (rājā) - king; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; वासवोपमः (vāsavopamaḥ) - equal to Indra; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; वने (vane) - in the forest; न (na) - not; दुःखी (duḥkhī) - sorrowful; स्या (syā) - may be; इति (iti) - thus; च (ca) - and; उद्धर्षणम् (uddharṣaṇam) - encouragement; कृतम् (kṛtam) - was done;]
(How, among the upholders of dharma, the best king, you, equal to Indra, again in the forest, may not be sorrowful — thus, and encouragement was done.)
The best among upholders of dharma, you, the king equal to Indra, were encouraged so that you might not be sorrowful again in the forest. (15-23-5)
नागायुतसमप्राणः ख्यातविक्रमपौरुषः। नायं भीमोऽत्ययं गच्छेदिति चोद्धर्षणं कृतम् ॥१५-२३-६॥
nāgāyutasamaprāṇaḥ khyātavikramapauruṣaḥ। nāyaṃ bhīmo'tyayaṃ gacchediti coddharṣaṇaṃ kṛtam ॥15-23-6॥
[नागायुतसमप्राणः (nāgāyutasamaprāṇaḥ) - having the strength equal to ten thousand elephants; ख्यातविक्रमपौरुषः (khyātavikramapauruṣaḥ) - famous for valor and manliness; न (na) - not; अयम् (ayam) - this; भीमः (bhīmaḥ) - Bhīma; अत्ययम् (atyayam) - loss; destruction; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - would incur; would go to; इति (iti) - thus; च (ca) - and; उद्धर्षणम् (uddharṣaṇam) - encouragement; boosting; कृतम् (kṛtam) - was done;]
(Having the strength of ten thousand elephants, famous for valor and manliness, not this Bhīma would come to harm—thus, encouragement was done.)
Encouragement was given, saying, "Bhīma, who possesses the strength of ten thousand elephants and is renowned for his valor and manliness, would not meet with destruction." (15-23-6)
भीमसेनादवरजस्तथायं वासवोपमः। विजयो नावसीदेत इति चोद्धर्षणं कृतम् ॥१५-२३-७॥
bhīmasenād avarajas tathāyaṁ vāsavopamaḥ। vijayo nāvasīdet iti coddharṣaṇaṁ kṛtam ॥15-23-7॥
[भीमसेनात् (bhīmasenāt) - from Bhīmasena; अवरजः (avarajaḥ) - younger brother; तथा (tathā) - likewise; अयम् (ayam) - this (person); वासवोपमः (vāsavopamaḥ) - equal to Vāsava (Indra); विजयः (vijayaḥ) - Vijaya (Arjuna); न (na) - not; अवसीदेत् (avasīdet) - should lose courage; इति (iti) - thus; च (ca) - and; उद्धर्षणम् (uddharṣaṇam) - encouragement; कृतम् (kṛtam) - was done;]
(From Bhīmasena, the younger brother, likewise this (one), equal to Vāsava; Vijaya (Arjuna) should not lose courage, thus, and, encouragement was done.)
Thus, encouragement was given to Vijaya, the younger brother of Bhīmasena and equal to Vāsava, so that he would not lose courage. (15-23-7)
नकुलः सहदेवश्च तथेमौ गुरुवर्तिनौ। क्षुधा कथं न सीदेतामिति चोद्धर्षणं कृतम् ॥१५-२३-८॥
nakulaḥ sahadevaś ca tathemau guruvartinau। kṣudhā kathaṁ na sīdetām iti cod-dharṣaṇaṁ kṛtam ॥15-23-8॥
[नकुलः (nakulaḥ) - Nakula; (proper noun, masculine nominative singular); सहदेवः (sahadevaḥ) - Sahadeva; (proper noun, masculine nominative singular); च (ca) - and; तथेमौ (tathā imau) - so these two; गुरुवर्तिनौ (guru-vartinau) - attending the teacher; (dual nominative, masculine, one who follows the guru); क्षुधा (kṣudhā) - by hunger; कथं (kathaṁ) - how; न (na) - not; सीदेताम् (sīdetām) - would both sink; (dual optative, from √sad, to sink/faint); इति (iti) - thus; (end of quotation); च (ca) - and; उद्धर्षणम् (ud-dharṣaṇam) - exhortation; encouragement; कृतम् (kṛtam) - was done; (neuter nominative singular or accusative);]
(Nakula, Sahadeva and so these two, attending the teacher, by hunger, how not would both faint, thus, and, exhortation, was done.)
Nakula and Sahadeva—these two who attend their teacher—an exhortation was made, saying: “How could they not faint from hunger?” (15-23-8)
इयं च बृहती श्यामा श्रीमत्यायतलोचना। वृथा सभातले क्लिष्टा मा भूदिति च तत्कृतम् ॥१५-२३-९॥
iyaṃ ca bṛhatī śyāmā śrīmatyāyatalocanā। vṛthā sabhātale kliṣṭā mā bhūd iti ca tatkṛtam ॥15-23-9॥
[इयं (iyaṃ) - this (feminine); च (ca) - and; बृहती (bṛhatī) - tall/large (feminine); श्यामा (śyāmā) - dark-complexioned (feminine); श्रीमत्या (śrīmatyā) - fortunate/prosperous (with beauty or wealth; instrumental singular feminine); आयतलोचना (āyatalocanā) - having large eyes (feminine); वृथा (vṛthā) - in vain; सभातले (sabhātale) - in the assembly hall (locative singular); क्लिष्टा (kliṣṭā) - afflicted (feminine); मा (mā) - let not; भूत् (bhūt) - be (third singular, precative); इति (iti) - thus; च (ca) - and; तत्कृतम् (tatkṛtam) - that was done;]
(This and tall dark-complexioned fortunate with large eyes, in vain in the assembly afflicted let not be thus and that was done.)
And this tall, dark-complexioned, fortunate woman with large eyes, let her not be afflicted in vain in the assembly—thus, that was done. (15-23-9)
प्रेक्षन्त्या मे तदा हीमां वेपन्तीं कदलीमिव। स्त्रीधर्मिणीमनिन्द्याङ्गीं तथा द्यूतपराजिताम् ॥१५-२३-१०॥
prekṣantyā me tadā hīmāṁ vepantīṁ kadalīm iva। strīdharminīṁ anindyāṅgīṁ tathā dyūta-parājitām ॥15-23-10॥
[प्रेक्षन्त्या (prekṣantyā) - by the one looking; मे (me) - my; तदा (tadā) - then; ही (hī) - indeed; इमाम् (imām) - this (woman); वेपन्तीम् (vepantīm) - trembling; कदलीम् (kadalīm) - (like a) plantain; इव (iva) - like; स्त्रीधर्मिणीम् (strīdharminīm) - endowed with the nature of a woman; अनिन्द्याङ्गीम् (anindyāṅgīm) - with faultless limbs; तथा (tathā) - thus; द्यूतपराजिताम् (dyūta-parājitām) - defeated in dice-game;]
(By the one looking, my, then, indeed, this (woman), trembling, (like a) plantain, like, endowed with the nature of a woman, with faultless limbs, thus, defeated in dice-game.)
Then, as I looked, I saw this woman of faultless limbs, truly trembling like a plantain, who, being endowed with womanly nature, had thus been defeated in the game of dice. (15-23-10)
दुःशासनो यदा मौढ्याद्दासीवत्पर्यकर्षत। तदैव विदितं मह्यं पराभूतमिदं कुलम् ॥१५-२३-११॥
duḥśāsano yadā mauḍhyād dāsīvat paryakarṣata. tadaiva viditaṃ mahyaṃ parābhūtam idaṃ kulam ॥15-23-11॥

(Duḥśāsana, when out of folly, like a servant woman, dragged (her)—at that very moment, it became known to me: defeated is this family.)
When Duḥśāsana, out of folly, dragged (her) like a servant woman, at that very moment I knew: “This family is defeated.” (15-23-11)
विषण्णाः कुरवश्चैव तदा मे श्वशुरादयः। यदैषा नाथमिच्छन्ती व्यलपत्कुररी यथा ॥१५-२३-१२॥
viṣaṇṇāḥ kuravaścaiva tadā me śvaśurādayaḥ। yadaiṣā nātham icchantī vyalapat kurarī yathā॥15-23-12॥
[विषण्णाः (viṣaṇṇāḥ) - dejected; कुरवः (kuravaḥ) - the Kurus; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; तदा (tadā) - then; मे (me) - my; श्वशुरादयः (śvaśura-ādayaḥ) - father-in-law and others; यदा (yadā) - when; एषा (eṣā) - this [woman]; नाथम् (nātham) - lord; इच्छन्ती (icchantī) - desiring; वियलपत् (vyalapat) - cried aloud; कुररी (kurarī) - female curlew; यथा (yathā) - as;]
(Dejected the Kurus and indeed then my father-in-law and others, when this [woman], desiring her lord, cried aloud as a female curlew.)
The Kurus, and indeed my father-in-law and his kin, were dejected at that time, when she, longing for her husband, cried out like a female curlew. (15-23-12)
केशपक्षे परामृष्टा पापेन हतबुद्धिना। यदा दुःशासनेनैषा तदा मुह्याम्यहं नृप ॥१५-२३-१३॥
keśapakṣe parāmṛṣṭā pāpena hatabuddhinā। yadā duḥśāsanenaiṣā tadā muhyāmyahaṃ nṛpa ॥15-23-13॥
[केशपक्षे (keśapakṣe) - in the hair (locks of hair); परामृष्टा (parāmṛṣṭā) - seized; पापेन (pāpena) - by the sinful; हतबुद्धिना (hatabuddhinā) - with destroyed intellect; यदा (yadā) - when; दुःशासनेन (duḥśāsanena) - by Duḥśāsana; एषा (eṣā) - this lady; तदा (tadā) - then; मुह्यामि (muhyāmi) - I become bewildered; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; नृप (nṛpa) - O king;]
(In the hair, seized by the sinful with destroyed intellect, when by Duḥśāsana this lady (is seized), then I become bewildered, I, O king.)
O king, whenever this lady is seized by her hair by Duḥśāsana, who is wicked and whose intellect is destroyed, then I lose my senses. (15-23-13)
युष्मत्तेजोविवृद्ध्यर्थं मया ह्युद्धर्षणं कृतम्। तदानीं विदुरावाक्यैरिति तद्वित्त पुत्रकाः ॥१५-२३-१४॥
yuṣmat-tejo-vivṛddhy-arthaṃ mayā hy uddharṣaṇaṃ kṛtam। tadānīṃ vidura-vākyair iti tad-vitta putrakāḥ ॥15-23-14॥
[युष्मत् (yuṣmat) - your; तेजः (tejaḥ) - energy; विवृद्ध्यर्थम् (vivṛddhy-artham) - for the purpose of increase; मया (mayā) - by me; हि (hi) - indeed; उद्धर्षणम् (uddharṣaṇam) - excitement; कृतम् (kṛtam) - was done; तदानीम् (tadānīm) - at that time; विदुर-वाक्यैः (vidura-vākyaiḥ) - by the words of Vidura; इति (iti) - so; तद्-वित्त (tad-vitta) - knower of that; पुत्रकाः (putrakāḥ) - children;]
(For the purpose of increase of your energy, excitement indeed was done by me; at that time, by the words of Vidura, so (said) the knower of that, children.)
In order to increase your energy, I indeed aroused excitement; at that time, by Vidura's words, so spoke the knower of this, O children. (15-23-14)
कथं न राजवंशोऽयं नश्येत्प्राप्य सुतान्मम। पाण्डोरिति मया पुत्र तस्मादुद्धर्षणं कृतम् ॥१५-२३-१५॥
kathaṁ na rājavaṁśo'yaṁ naśyetprāpya sutānmama। pāṇḍoriti mayā putra tasmāduddharṣaṇaṁ kṛtam ॥15-23-15॥
[कथं (katham) - how; न (na) - not; राजवंशः (rājavaṁśaḥ) - royal lineage; अयम् (ayam) - this; नश्येत् (naśyet) - should perish; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having obtained; सुतान् (sutān) - sons; मम (mama) - of mine; पाण्डोः (pāṇḍoḥ) - of Pāṇḍu; इति (iti) - thus; मया (mayā) - by me; पुत्र (putra) - O son; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; उद्धर्षणम् (uddharṣaṇam) - exultation; कृतम् (kṛtam) - has been done;]
(How should not this royal lineage perish, having obtained sons of mine? 'Of Pāṇḍu,' thus by me, O son, therefore exultation has been done.)
How could this royal lineage perish, having obtained my sons? Therefore, O son, it is for this reason that I have caused the exultation, saying 'of Pāṇḍu.' (15-23-15)
न तस्य पुत्रः पौत्रौ वा कुत एव स पार्थिव। लभते सुकृताँल्लोकान्यस्माद्वंशः प्रणश्यति ॥१५-२३-१६॥
na tasya putraḥ pautrau vā kuta eva sa pārthiva। labhate sukṛtā̱ṃllokān-yasmād-vaṃśaḥ praṇaśyati॥15-23-16॥
[न (na) (na) - not; तस्य (tasya) (tasya) - his; पुत्रः (putraḥ) (putraḥ) - son; पौत्रौ (pautrau) (pautrau) - grandsons; वा (vā) (vā) - or; कुत (kuta) (kuta) - from where; एव (eva) (eva) - indeed; स (sa) (sa) - he; पार्थिव (pārthiva) (pārthiva) - king; लभते (labhate) (labhate) - obtains; सुकृतान् (sukṛtān) (sukṛtān) - virtuous deeds; लोकान् (lokān) (lokān) - worlds; यस्मात् (yasmāt) (yasmāt) - from whom; वंशः (vaṃśaḥ) (vaṃśaḥ) - family; प्रणश्यति (praṇaśyati) (praṇaśyati) - perishes;]
(Not his son, grandsons or even he, O king, at all—obtains the virtuous worlds, from whom the family perishes.)
Neither his sons nor grandsons, nor the king himself, obtains the worlds earned by virtue, from whom the family has perished. (15-23-16)
भुक्तं राज्यफलं पुत्रा भर्तुर्मे विपुलं पुरा। महादानानि दत्तानि पीतः सोमो यथाविधि ॥१५-२३-१७॥
bhuktaṃ rājya-phalaṃ putrā bhartur me vipulaṃ purā। mahā-dānāni dattāni pītaḥ somo yathā-vidhi ॥15-23-17॥
[भुक्तं (bhuktam) - enjoyed; राज्यफलं (rājya-phalam) - the fruit of kingdom; पुत्रा (putrā) - O sons; भर्तुः (bhartuḥ) - of (your) husband; मे (me) - by me; विपुलं (vipulam) - great; पुरा (purā) - formerly; महादानानि (mahā-dānāni) - great gifts; दत्तानि (dattāni) - have been given; पीतः (pītaḥ) - has been drunk; सोमः (somaḥ) - soma; यथाविधि (yathā-vidhi) - according to the rule;]
(Enjoyed kingdom-fruit, O sons, of husband by me, great, formerly. Great gifts have been given, soma has been drunk according to the rule.)
O sons, I have long ago enjoyed the great fruits of the kingdom of your father; great gifts have been given, and soma has been drunk according to the proper rite. (15-23-17)
साहं नात्मफलार्थं वै वासुदेवमचूचुदम्। विदुरायाः प्रलापैस्तैः प्लावनार्थं तु तत्कृतम् ॥१५-२३-१८॥
sāhaṃ nātmaphalārthaṃ vai vāsudevam acūcudam। vidurāyāḥ pralāpais taiḥ plāvanārthaṃ tu tatkṛtam ॥15-23-18॥
[सः अहम् (saḥ aham) - that I; न (na) - not; आत्मफलार्थं (ātmaphalārtham) - for own fruit/result; वै (vai) - indeed; वासुदेवम् (vāsudevam) - Vāsudeva; अचूचुदम् (acūcudam) - worshipped/revered; विदुरायाः (vidurāyāḥ) - of Vidurā; प्रलापैः (pralāpaiḥ) - by lamentations; तैः (taiḥ) - by those; प्लावनार्थं (plāvanārtham) - for the purpose of alleviation; तु (tu) - but; तत् कृतम् (tat kṛtam) - that was done;]
(That I indeed did not worship Vāsudeva for my own result; but that was done for the purpose of alleviation by Vidurā's lamentations with those.)
I did not worship Vāsudeva for my own gain; rather, I did so for the sake of alleviating the effects of Vidurā’s lamentations with those (words). (15-23-18)
नाहं राज्यफलं पुत्र कामये पुत्रनिर्जितम्। पतिलोकानहं पुण्यान्कामये तपसा विभो ॥१५-२३-१९॥
nāhaṃ rājyaphalaṃ putra kāmaye putranirjitam। patilokānahaṃ puṇyānkāmaye tapasā vibho ॥15-23-19॥
[न (na) - not; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; राज्यफलं (rājyaphalam) - the fruit of a kingdom; पुत्र (putra) - O son; कामये (kāmaye) - I desire; पुत्रनिर्जितम् (putranirjitam) - won by (my) son; पतिलोकान् (patilokān) - the worlds (realms) of the husband; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; पुण्यान् (puṇyān) - meritorious (fruits); कामये (kāmaye) - I desire; तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; विभो (vibho) - O Lord;]
(Not I the fruit of kingdom, O son, do I desire, won by (my) son. The worlds of the husband, I not the merits do I desire by austerity, O Lord.)
O son, I do not desire the fruit of the kingdom obtained by my son. O Lord, I do not wish for the abodes of my husband or other merits earned through austerities. (15-23-19)
श्वश्रूश्वशुरयोः कृत्वा शुश्रूषां वनवासिनोः। तपसा शोषयिष्यामि युधिष्ठिर कलेवरम् ॥१५-२३-२०॥
śvaśrūśvaśurayoḥ kṛtvā śuśrūṣāṃ vanavāsinoḥ। tapasā śoṣayiṣyāmi yudhiṣṭhira kalevaram ॥15-23-20॥

निवर्तस्व कुरुश्रेष्ठ भीमसेनादिभिः सह। धर्मे ते धीयतां बुद्धिर्मनस्ते महदस्तु च ॥१५-२३-२१॥
