ततस्तस्मिन्मुनिश्रेष्ठा राजानं द्रष्टुमभ्ययुः। नारदः पर्वतश्चैव देवलश्च महातपाः ॥१५-२६-१॥
tatastasmin muniśreṣṭhā rājānaṃ draṣṭum abhyayuḥ. nāradaḥ parvataś caiva devalaś ca mahātapāḥ ॥15-26-1॥

(Then, in that (place), the foremost sages approached to see the king. Nārada, Parvata indeed, and Devala, great ascetics.)
Then, at that time, the foremost sages Nārada, Parvata, and Devala, who were great ascetics, came to see the king. (15-26-1)
द्वैपायनः सशिष्यश्च सिद्धाश्चान्ये मनीषिणः। शतयूपश्च राजर्षिर्वृद्धः परमधार्मिकः ॥१५-२६-२॥

तेषां कुन्ती महाराज पूजां चक्रे यथाविधि। ते चापि तुतुषुस्तस्यास्तापसाः परिचर्यया ॥१५-२६-३॥
teṣāṃ kuntī mahārāja pūjāṃ cakre yathāvidhi. te cāpi tutuṣus tasyās tāpasāḥ paricaryayā ॥15-26-3॥

(Of them, Kuntī, O great king, honor performed according to rule. They also were satisfied with her, the ascetics, by (her) service.)
O great king, Kuntī performed honors for them according to the prescribed rules, and those ascetics were also satisfied with her service. (15-26-3)
तत्र धर्म्याः कथास्तात चक्रुस्ते परमर्षयः। रमयन्तो महात्मानं धृतराष्ट्रं जनाधिपम् ॥१५-२६-४॥
tatra dharmyāḥ kathās tāta cakrus te paramarṣayaḥ। ramayanto mahātmānaṃ dhṛtarāṣṭraṃ janādhipam॥15-26-4॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; धर्म्याः (dharmyāḥ) - righteous; कथाः (kathāḥ) - stories; तात (tāta) - O dear (one); चक्रुः (cakruḥ) - made; ते (te) - those; परमर्षयः (paramarṣayaḥ) - great sages; रमयन्तः (ramayantaḥ) - delighting; महात्मानम् (mahātmānam) - the great-souled; धृतराष्ट्रम् (dhṛtarāṣṭram) - Dhritarashtra; जनाधिपम् (janādhipam) - the lord of the people;]
(There, righteous stories, O dear, those great sages made, delighting the great-souled Dhritarashtra, the lord of the people.)
There, those great sages, O dear, told righteous stories to delight Dhritarashtra, the great-souled lord of the people. (15-26-4)
कथान्तरे तु कस्मिंश्चिद्देवर्षिर्नारदस्तदा। कथामिमामकथयत्सर्वप्रत्यक्षदर्शिवान् ॥१५-२६-५॥
kathāntare tu kasmiṃścid devarṣir nāradas tadā। kathām imām akathayat sarva-pratyakṣa-darśivān ॥15-26-5॥

(In another story, but in some (place/time), the sage among gods Nārada then narrated this story, having directly seen all.)
But in another story—at some time—the divine sage Nārada, who had witnessed everything directly, narrated this very tale. (15-26-5)
पुरा प्रजापतिसमो राजासीदकुतोभयः। सहस्रचित्य इत्युक्तः शतयूपपितामहः ॥१५-२६-६॥
purā prajāpatisamo rājāsīdakutobhayaḥ। sahasracitya ityuktaḥ śatayūpapitāmahaḥ ॥15-26-6॥

(Once upon a time, a king, equal to Prajāpati, was one who feared nothing from anywhere. Sahasracitya thus called, ancestor of Śatayūpa. (15-26-6))
Once upon a time, there was a king, equal to Prajāpati and fearless from all quarters. Known as Sahasracitya, he was the ancestor of Śatayūpa. (15-26-6)
स पुत्रे राज्यमासज्य ज्येष्ठे परमधार्मिके। सहस्रचित्यो धर्मात्मा प्रविवेश वनं नृपः ॥१५-२६-७॥
sa putre rājyam āsajya jyeṣṭhe paramadhārmike| sahasracitiyo dharmātmā praviveśa vanaṃ nṛpaḥ ||15-26-7||
[स (sa) - he; पुत्रे (putre) - upon son; राज्यम् (rājyam) - kingdom; आसज्य (āsajya) - having entrusted; ज्येष्ठे (jyeṣṭhe) - to the eldest; परमधार्मिके (paramadhārmike) - supremely righteous; सहस्रचित्यः (sahasracitīyaḥ) - having performed a thousand sacrifices; धर्मात्मा (dharmātmā) - righteous-souled; प्रविवेश (praviveśa) - entered; वनम् (vanam) - forest; नृपः (nṛpaḥ) - the king;]
(He, having entrusted the kingdom to his son, the eldest, supremely righteous one, having performed a thousand sacrifices, the righteous-souled king entered the forest.)
Having entrusted the kingdom to his supremely righteous eldest son, the righteous king who had performed a thousand sacrifices entered the forest. (15-26-7)
स गत्वा तपसः पारं दीप्तस्य स नराधिपः। पुरंदरस्य संस्थानं प्रतिपेदे महामनाः ॥१५-२६-८॥
sa gatvā tapasaḥ pāraṃ dīptasya sa narādhipaḥ। puraṃdarasya saṃsthānaṃ pratipede mahāmanāḥ ॥15-26-8॥
[स (sa) - he; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; तपसः (tapasaḥ) - of penance; पारं (pāraṃ) - the end; the farthest point; दीप्तस्य (dīptasya) - of blazing (penance); स (sa) - that; he; नराधिपः (narādhipaḥ) - king; lord of men; पुरंदरस्य (puraṃdarasya) - of Purandara (Indra); संस्थानं (saṃsthānam) - abode; residence; प्रतिपेदे (pratipede) - attained; महामनाः (mahāmanāḥ) - great-minded;]
(He, having gone to the end of blazing penance, that king, of Purandara the abode attained, great-minded.)
That great-minded king, having reached the end of blazing penance, attained the abode of Purandara (Indra). (15-26-8)
दृष्टपूर्वः स बहुशो राजन्सम्पतता मया। महेन्द्रसदने राजा तपसा दग्धकिल्बिषः ॥१५-२६-९॥
dṛṣṭapūrvaḥ sa bahuśo rājan-sampatatā mayā। mahendrasadane rājā tapasā dagdhakilbiṣaḥ ॥15-26-9॥
[दृष्टपूर्वः (dṛṣṭapūrvaḥ) - seen previously; previously seen; previously beheld; स (sa) - he; बहुशः (bahuśaḥ) - many times; repeatedly; राजन् (rājan) - O king; संपतता (sampatatā) - by me (having come, moving about, or attaining); by me having come; मया (mayā) - by me; महेन्द्रसदने (mahendra-sadane) - in Indra's hall; in the mansion of Mahendra (Indra); राजा (rājā) - the king; तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; by penance; दग्धकिल्बिषः (dagdha-kilbiṣaḥ) - whose sin is burnt; freed from sin by burning (of tapas);]
(Previously seen he many times, O king, by me having come; in Indra's palace, the king, by penance, with sin burned.)
O king, that person has been seen many times before by me; having come into Indra's palace, the king, whose sins were burnt by penance. (15-26-9)
तथा शैलालयो राजा भगदत्तपितामहः। तपोबलेनैव नृपो महेन्द्रसदनं गतः ॥१५-२६-१०॥
tathā śailālayo rājā bhagadattapitāmahaḥ। tapobalenaiva nṛpo mahendrasadanaṃ gataḥ॥15-26-10॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; शैलालयः (śailālayaḥ) - mountain-dweller; राजा (rājā) - the king; भगदत्तपितामहः (bhagadattapitāmahaḥ) - the grandfather of Bhagadatta; तपोबलेन (tapobalena) - by the strength of austerity; एव (eva) - indeed; नृपः (nṛpaḥ) - the king; महेन्द्रसदनम् (mahendrasadanam) - abode of Mahendra (Indra); गतः (gataḥ) - has gone;]
(Thus the mountain-dweller king, the grandfather of Bhagadatta, by the strength of austerity indeed, the king, the abode of Mahendra has gone.)
Thus, the mountain-dwelling king, the grandfather of Bhagadatta, by the very power of his austerities, went to the abode of Mahendra (Indra). (15-26-10)
तथा पृषध्रो नामासीद्राजा वज्रधरोपमः। स चापि तपसा लेभे नाकपृष्ठमितो नृपः ॥१५-२६-११॥
tathā pṛṣadhro nāmāsīd rājā vajradharo'pamaḥ। sa cāpi tapasā lebhe nākapṛṣṭham ito nṛpaḥ॥15-26-11॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; in this way; पृषध्रः (pṛṣadhraḥ) - Pṛṣadhra; (proper noun, name); नामा (nāmā) - by name; named; अासीत् (āsīt) - there was; he was; राजा (rājā) - king; वज्रधरः (vajradharaḥ) - wielder of thunderbolt; उपमः (upamaḥ) - equal; resembling; सः (saḥ) - he; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; by penance; लेभे (lebhe) - he attained; obtained; नाकपृष्ठम् (nākapṛṣṭham) - heaven; the upper region (literally: back/abode of the sky); इतः (itaḥ) - from here; नृपः (nṛpaḥ) - king;]
(Thus Pṛṣadhra by name was a king, equal to the wielder of the thunderbolt. He also, by austerity, obtained the abode of heaven from here, the king.)
In this way, there was a king named Pṛṣadhra, who was like the wielder of the thunderbolt. This king too attained heaven from here through his austerities. (15-26-11)
अस्मिन्नरण्ये नृपते मान्धातुरपि चात्मजः। पुरुकुत्सो नृपः सिद्धिं महतीं समवाप्तवान् ॥१५-२६-१२॥
asminn araṇye nṛpate māndhātur api cātmajaḥ. purukutsō nṛpaḥ siddhiṃ mahatīṃ samavāptavān ॥15-26-12॥
[अस्मिन् (asmin) - in this; अरण्ये (araṇye) - forest; नृपते (nṛpate) - O king; मान्धातुः (māndhātuḥ) - of Māndhātṛ; अपि (api) - also; च (ca) - and; आत्मजः (ātmajaḥ) - son; पुरुकुत्सः (purukutsaḥ) - Purukutsa; नृपः (nṛpaḥ) - king; सिद्धिं (siddhiṃ) - success; महतीं (mahatīṃ) - great; समवाप्तवान् (samavāptavān) - attained;]
(In this forest, O king, the son of Māndhātṛ, Purukutsa the king, also and, attained success great.)
O king, in this forest, the son of Māndhātṛ, King Purukutsa, also attained great success. (15-26-12)
भार्या समभवद्यस्य नर्मदा सरितां वरा। सोऽस्मिन्नरण्ये नृपतिस्तपस्तप्त्वा दिवं गतः ॥१५-२६-१३॥
bhāryā samabhavad yasya narmadā saritāṃ varā। so'sminn araṇye nṛpatis tapas taptvā divaṃ gataḥ ॥15-26-13॥
[भार्या (bhāryā) - wife; समभवद् (samabhavad) - was born; यस्य (yasya) - of whom; नर्मदा (narmadā) - Narmadā; सरितां (saritām) - of rivers; वरा (varā) - the best; सः (saḥ) - he; अस्मिन् (asmin) - in this; अरण्ये (araṇye) - forest; नृपतिः (nṛpatiḥ) - king; तपः (tapas) - austerity; तपित्वा (taptvā) - having performed; दिवम् (divam) - heaven; गतः (gataḥ) - attained;]
(The wife was born of whom Narmadā, of rivers the best. He in this forest, the king, austerity having performed, heaven attained.)
His wife, Narmadā, the best of rivers, was born to him. That king, having performed austerity in this forest, attained heaven. (15-26-13)
शशलोमा च नामासीद्राजा परमधार्मिकः। स चाप्यस्मिन्वने तप्त्वा तपो दिवमवाप्तवान् ॥१५-२६-१४॥
śaśalomā ca nāmāsīd rājā paramadhārmikaḥ. sa cāpy asmin vane taptvā tapo divam avāptavān ॥15-26-14॥
[शशलोमा (śaśalomā) - Śaśalomā; (a proper name); च (ca) - and; नाम (nāma) - by name; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; राजा (rājā) - king; परमधार्मिकः (paramadhārmikaḥ) - most virtuous; supremely righteous; स (sa) - he; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अस्मिन् (asmin) - in this; वने (vane) - forest; तप्त्वा (taptvā) - having performed (austerities); तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; penance; दिवम् (divam) - heaven; अवाप्तवान् (avāptavān) - attained;]
(Śaśalomā and by name was king most virtuous. He also in this forest having performed austerity, heaven attained.)
There was a king named Śaśalomā, very virtuous. He also, having performed austerities in this forest, attained heaven. (15-26-14)
द्वैपायनप्रसादाच्च त्वमपीदं तपोवनम्। राजन्नवाप्य दुष्प्रापां सिद्धिमग्र्यां गमिष्यसि ॥१५-२६-१५॥
dvaipāyanaprasādācca tvam apīdaṃ tapovanam। rājann avāpya duṣprāpāṃ siddhim agryāṃ gamiṣyasi ॥15-26-15॥
[द्वैपायनप्रसादात् (dvaipāyanaprasādāt) - from the favor of Dvaipayana; च (ca) - and; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अपि (api) - also; इदं (idaṃ) - this; तपोवनम् (tapovanam) - forest of austerity; राजन् (rājan) - O king; अवाप्य (avāpya) - having attained; दुष्प्रापाम् (duṣprāpām) - very difficult to attain; सिद्धिम् (siddhim) - perfection; अग्र्याम् (agryām) - supreme; गमिष्यसि (gamiṣyasi) - you will go;]
(And from the favor of Dvaipayana, you also, having attained this forest of austerity, O king, very difficult to attain supreme perfection you will go.)
O king, through the favor of Dvaipayana, you too, by attaining this very challenging forest of asceticism, will achieve the supreme perfection. (15-26-15)
त्वं चापि राजशार्दूल तपसोऽन्ते श्रिया वृतः। गान्धारीसहितो गन्ता गतिं तेषां महात्मनाम् ॥१५-२६-१६॥
tvaṃ cāpi rājaśārdūla tapaso'nte śriyā vṛtaḥ. gāndhārīsahito gantā gatiṃ teṣāṃ mahātmanām ॥15-26-16॥
[त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; राजशार्दूल (rājaśārdūla) - O tiger among kings; तपसः (tapasaḥ) - of (your) austerity; अन्ते (ante) - at the end; श्रिया (śriyā) - by glory; वृतः (vṛtaḥ) - surrounded; गान्धारीसहितः (gāndhārīsahitaḥ) - accompanied by Gāndhārī; गन्ता (gantā) - you will go; गतिम् (gatim) - path; तेषाम् (teṣām) - of those; महात्मनाम् (mahātmanām) - great-souled;]
(You also, O tiger among kings, at the end of your austerity, surrounded by glory, accompanied by Gāndhārī, will go the path of those great-souled ones.)
You too, O best of kings, when your austerities are complete and surrounded by glory, together with Gāndhārī, will follow the path of those great souls. (15-26-16)
पाण्डुः स्मरति नित्यं च बलहन्तुः समीपतः। त्वां सदैव महीपाल स त्वां श्रेयसि योक्ष्यति ॥१५-२६-१७॥
pāṇḍuḥ smarati nityaṃ ca balahantuḥ samīpataḥ। tvāṃ sadaiva mahīpāla sa tvāṃ śreyasi yokṣyati॥15-26-17॥
[पाण्डुः (pāṇḍuḥ) - Pāṇḍu (proper noun); स्मरति (smarati) - remembers; नित्यं (nityaṃ) - always; च (ca) - and; बलहन्तुः (balahantuḥ) - Balahantuḥ (epithet, 'destroyer of strength', here a proper noun); समीपतः (samīpataḥ) - near; त्वां (tvāṃ) - you; सदैव (sadaiva) - always; महीपाल (mahīpāla) - O king; सः (sa) - he; त्वां (tvāṃ) - you; श्रेयसि (śreyasi) - in welfare / in good (cause); योक्ष्यति (yokṣyati) - will employ (will yoke, will engage);]
(Pāṇḍu remembers always and Balahantuḥ from near; you always, O king, he you in welfare will employ.)
Pāṇḍu always remembers, and Balahantuḥ being near; you, O king, he will always employ in what is good for you. (15-26-17)
तव शुश्रूषया चैव गान्धार्याश्च यशस्विनी। भर्तुः सलोकतां कुन्ती गमिष्यति वधूस्तव ॥१५-२६-१८॥
tava śuśrūṣayā caiva gāndhāryāś ca yaśasvinī. bhartuḥ salokatāṃ kuntī gamiṣyati vadhūs tava ॥15-26-18॥
[तव (tava) - your; शुश्रूषया (śuśrūṣayā) - by service; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; गान्धार्याः (gāndhāryāḥ) - of Gandhari; च (ca) - and; यशस्विनी (yaśasvinī) - the illustrious one; भर्तुः (bhartuḥ) - of the husband; सलोकताम् (salokatām) - state of residing in the same world; कुन्ती (kuntī) - Kunti; गमिष्यति (gamiṣyati) - will attain; वधूः (vadhūḥ) - wife; तव (tava) - your;]
(By your service and indeed by that of Gandhari, the illustrious, Kunti, wife of your husband, will attain residence in the same world as her husband.)
Through your service and that of illustrious Gandhari, Kunti, your husband's wife, will attain to the same world as her husband. (15-26-18)
युधिष्ठिरस्य जननी स हि धर्मः सनातनः। वयमेतत्प्रपश्यामो नृपते दिव्यचक्षुषा ॥१५-२६-१९॥
yudhiṣṭhirasya jananī sa hi dharmaḥ sanātanaḥ। vayam etat prapaśyāmo nṛpate divyacakṣuṣā ॥15-26-19॥
[युधिष्ठिरस्य (yudhiṣṭhirasya) - of Yudhiṣṭhira; जननी (jananī) - mother; स (sa) - she; हि (hi) - indeed; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - Dharma; सनातनः (sanātanaḥ) - eternal; वयम् (vayam) - we; एतत् (etat) - this; प्रपश्यामः (prapaśyāmaḥ) - we see; नृपते (nṛpate) - O king; दिव्यचक्षुषा (divyacakṣuṣā) - with divine vision;]
(Of Yudhiṣṭhira, mother she indeed Dharma eternal. We this we see, O king, with divine vision.)
She who is the mother of Yudhiṣṭhira is indeed the eternal Dharma. O king, we perceive this with divine vision. (15-26-19)
प्रवेक्ष्यति महात्मानं विदुरश्च युधिष्ठिरम्। सञ्जयस्त्वदनुध्यानात्पूतः स्वर्गमवाप्स्यति ॥१५-२६-२०॥
pravekṣyati mahātmānaṃ viduraś ca yudhiṣṭhiram। sañjayas tvadanudhyānāt pūtaḥ svargam avāpsyati ॥15-26-20॥
[प्रवेक्ष्यति (pravekṣyati) - will enter; महात्मानं (mahātmānam) - the great-souled one; विदुरश्च (viduraś ca) - and Vidura; युधिष्ठिरम् (yudhiṣṭhiram) - Yudhishthira; सञ्जयः (sañjayaḥ) - Sanjaya; त्वदनुध्यानात् (tvad-anudhyānāt) - by constant meditation on you; पूतः (pūtaḥ) - purified; स्वर्गम् (svargam) - to heaven; अवाप्स्यति (avāpsyati) - will attain;]
(Will enter the great-souled one and Vidura, Yudhishthira. Sanjaya, by constant meditation on you, purified, will attain heaven.)
The great-souled one, Vidura, will enter Yudhishthira, and Sanjaya, purified by his constant meditation on you, will attain heaven. (15-26-20)
एतच्छ्रुत्वा कौरवेन्द्रो महात्मा; सहैव पत्न्या प्रीतिमान्प्रत्यगृह्णात्। विद्वान्वाक्यं नारदस्य प्रशस्य; चक्रे पूजां चातुलां नारदाय ॥१५-२६-२१॥
etac chrutvā kauravendro mahātmā; sahaiva patnyā prītimān pratyagṛhṇāt. vidvān vākyaṃ nāradasya praśasya; cakre pūjāṃ cātulāṃ nāradāya ॥15-26-21॥

(Having heard this, the king of the Kauravas, the great-souled one, together with his wife, full of joy, accepted. The learned one, having praised the statement of Nārada, performed unsurpassed honor to Nārada.)
Hearing this, the great-souled king of the Kauravas, together with his wife, joyfully accepted. The learned one praised Nārada's words and offered Nārada exceptional honor. (15-26-21)
तथा सर्वे नारदं विप्रसङ्घाः; सम्पूजयामासुरतीव राजन्। राज्ञः प्रीत्या धृतराष्ट्रस्य ते वै; पुनः पुनः समहृष्टास्तदानीम् ॥१५-२६-२२॥
tathā sarve nāradaṃ viprasaṅghāḥ; sampūjayāmāsaratīva rājan. rājñaḥ prītyā dhṛtarāṣṭrasya te vai; punaḥ punaḥ samahṛṣṭāstadānīm ॥15-26-22॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; सर्वे (sarve) - all; नारदं (nāradam) - Nārada (sage); विप्रसङ्घाः (viprasaṅghāḥ) - groups of Brāhmaṇas; सम्पूजयामासु: (सम्पूजयामासुः) (sampūjayāmāsuḥ) - honoured; अतीव (atīva) - exceedingly; राजन् (rājan) - O king; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - of the king; प्रीत्या (prītyā) - with pleasure; धृतराष्ट्रस्य (dhṛtarāṣṭrasya) - of Dhṛtarāṣṭra; ते (te) - they; वै (vai) - indeed; पुनः पुनः (punaḥ punaḥ) - again and again; समहृष्टाः (samahṛṣṭāḥ) - very delighted; तदानीम् (tadānīm) - at that time;]
(Thus all the groups of Brāhmaṇas exceedingly honoured Nārada, O king. With pleasure of the king Dhṛtarāṣṭra, they indeed, again and again, very delighted at that time.)
