वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

ततो भागीरथीतीरे मेध्ये पुण्यजनोचिते। निवासमकरोद्राजा विदुरस्य मते स्थितः ॥१५-२५-१॥

tato bhāgīrathītīre medhye puṇyajanocite। nivāsamakarodrājā vidurasya mate sthitaḥ ॥15-25-1॥

[ततः (tataḥ) - then; after that; भागीरथी-तीरे (bhāgīrathī-tīre) - on the bank of the Bhagirathi (Ganga); मेध्ये (medhye) - in a pure (sacred) place; पुण्य-जन-उचिते (puṇya-jana-ucite) - suitable for virtuous people; निवासम् (nivāsam) - residence; dwelling; अकरोत् (akarot) - he made; राजा (rājā) - the king; विदुरस्य (vidurasya) - of Vidura; मते (mate) - according to the advice; opinion; स्थितः (sthitaḥ) - having abided; (he) stayed;]

(Then, on the bank of the Bhagirathi, in a pure place suitable for virtuous people, the king made a residence, having abided by (according to) the opinion of Vidura.)

Then, on the bank of the Bhagirathi river, in a sacred place fitting for the virtuous, the king built a dwelling in accordance with Vidura's advice. (15-25-1)

तत्रैनं पर्युपातिष्ठन्ब्राह्मणा राष्ट्रवासिनः। क्षत्रविट्शूद्रसङ्घाश्च बहवो भरतर्षभ ॥१५-२५-२॥

tatraiṇaṃ paryupātiṣṭhanbrāhmaṇā rāṣṭravāsinaḥ। kṣatraviṭśūdrasaṅghāśca bahavo bharatarṣabha ॥15-25-2॥

(There him approached from all sides Brāhmaṇas, inhabitants of the kingdom, Kṣatriya, Vaiśya, Śūdra groups and many, O bull among the Bharatas.)

There, Brāhmaṇas, inhabitants of the kingdom, and many groups of Kṣatriyas, Vaiśyas, and Śūdras gathered around him from all sides, O foremost of the Bharatas. (15-25-2)

स तैः परिवृतो राजा कथाभिरभिनन्द्य तान्। अनुजज्ञे सशिष्यान्वै विधिवत्प्रतिपूज्य च ॥१५-२५-३॥

sa taiḥ parivṛto rājā kathābhir abhinandya tān। anujajñe saśiṣyān vai vidhivat pratipūjya ca ॥15-25-3॥

(He, surrounded by them, the king, having greeted them with stories, permitted (them) with (their) disciples indeed, after duly honoring (them) according to rule and.)

He, the king, surrounded by them, having greeted them with stories and duly honored them according to custom, permitted them along with their disciples. (15-25-3)

सायाह्ने स महीपालस्ततो गङ्गामुपेत्य ह। चकार विधिवच्छौचं गान्धारी च यशस्विनी ॥१५-२५-४॥

sāyāhne sa mahīpālas tato gaṅgām upetya ha। cakāra vidhivac chaucam gāndhārī ca yaśasvinī॥15-25-4॥

(In the evening, he, the king, thereupon having approached the Gaṅgā, indeed performed purification according to rule, and Gāndhārī, the illustrious, (did) too.)

In the evening, the king then went to the Gaṅgā and performed purification according to the rules; the illustrious Gāndhārī also did so. (15-25-4)

तथैवान्ये पृथक्सर्वे तीर्थेष्वाप्लुत्य भारत। चक्रुः सर्वाः क्रियास्तत्र पुरुषा विदुरादयः ॥१५-२५-५॥

tathaivānye pṛthaksarve tīrtheṣvāplutya bhārata। cakruḥ sarvāḥ kriyāstatra puruṣā vidurādayaḥ ॥15-25-5॥

[तथा एव (tathā eva) - in the same way; indeed; अन्ये (anye) - others; पृथक् सर्वे (pṛthak sarve) - separately all; तीर्थेषु आप्लुत्य (tīrtheṣu āplutya) - having bathed in the sacred fords; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; चक्रुः (cakruḥ) - they performed; सर्वाः (sarvāḥ) - all; क्रियाः (kriyāḥ) - rites; तत्र (tatra) - there; पुरुषाः (puruṣāḥ) - men; विदुरादयः (vidurādayaḥ) - Vidura and others;]

(In the same way, others, all separately, having bathed in the sacred fords, O Bhārata, performed all rites there, men, Vidura and others.)

Similarly, O Bhārata, the other men, Vidura and the rest, all separately performed every rite there after bathing in the sacred fords. (15-25-5)

कृतशौचं ततो वृद्धं श्वशुरं कुन्तिभोजजा। गान्धारीं च पृथा राजन्गङ्गातीरमुपानयत् ॥१५-२५-६॥

kṛtaśaucaṃ tato vṛddhaṃ śvaśuraṃ kuntibhojajā। gāndhārīṃ ca pṛthā rājan gaṅgātīram upānayat ॥15-25-6॥

[कृतशौचं (kṛtaśaucam) - one who has performed purification; ततः (tataḥ) - then; वृद्धं (vṛddham) - the aged; श्वशुरं (śvaśuram) - father-in-law; कुन्तिभोजजा (kuntibhojajā) - the daughter of Kuntibhoja; गान्धारीं (gāndhārīm) - Gandhari; च (ca) - and; पृथा (pṛthā) - Kunti; राजन् (rājan) - O king; गङ्गातीरम् (gaṅgātīram) - to the bank of the Ganga; उपानयत् (upānayat) - led;]

(One who has performed purification, then the aged father-in-law, the daughter of Kuntibhoja, Gandhari and Kunti, O king, to the bank of the Ganga, led.)

O king, Kunti, the daughter of Kuntibhoja, having performed purification, led her aged father-in-law and Gandhari to the bank of the Ganga. (15-25-6)

राज्ञस्तु याजकैस्तत्र कृतो वेदीपरिस्तरः। जुहाव तत्र वह्निं स नृपतिः सत्यसङ्गरः ॥१५-२५-७॥

rājñas tu yājakais tatra kṛto vedīparistaraḥ। juhāva tatra vahniṃ sa nṛpatiḥ satyasaṅgaraḥ ॥15-25-7॥

[राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - of the king; तु (tu) - but; याजकैः (yājakaiḥ) - by the priests; तत्र (tatra) - there; कृतः (kṛtaḥ) - was made; वेदीपरिस्तरः (vedīparistaraḥ) - the covering (paristara) of the altar (vedī); जुहाव (juhāva) - he offered oblations; तत्र (tatra) - there; वह्निम् (vahnim) - unto the fire; स (sa) - he; नृपतिः (nṛpatiḥ) - the king; सत्यसङ्गरः (satyasaṅgaraḥ) - the firm in truth;]

(But for the king, by the priests, there was made the covering of the altar; there he, the king, firm in truth, offered oblations into the fire.)

But the priests prepared the altar covering for the king there; and there, the king firm in truth offered oblations into the fire. (15-25-7)

ततो भागीरथीतीरात्कुरुक्षेत्रं जगाम सः। सानुगो नृपतिर्विद्वान्नियतः संयतेन्द्रियः ॥१५-२५-८॥

tato bhāgīrathītīrāt kurukṣetraṃ jagāma saḥ। sānugo nṛpatir vidvān niyataḥ saṃyatendriyaḥ ॥15-25-8॥

[ततः (tataḥ) - then; भागीरथीतीरात् (bhāgīrathītīrāt) - from the bank of the Bhāgīrathī; कुरुक्षेत्रम् (kurukṣetram) - Kurukṣetra; जगाम (jagāma) - he went; सः (saḥ) - he; सानुगः (sānugaḥ) - with his retinue; नृपतिः (nṛpatiḥ) - the king; विद्वान् (vidvān) - wise; नियतः (niyataḥ) - self-controlled; संयतेन्द्रियः (saṃyatendriyaḥ) - one whose senses are restrained;]

(Then from the bank of the Bhāgīrathī, to Kurukṣetra, he went; he, the king, with his retinue, wise, self-controlled, having his senses restrained.)

Then, departing from the bank of the Bhāgīrathī, the wise and self-controlled king, whose senses were restrained, together with his retinue, went to Kurukṣetra. (15-25-8)

तत्राश्रमपदं धीमानभिगम्य स पार्थिवः। आससादाथ राजर्षिः शतयूपं मनीषिणम् ॥१५-२५-९॥

tatrāśramapadaṁ dhīmān abhigamya sa pārthivaḥ। āsasādātha rājarṣiḥ śatayūpaṁ manīṣiṇam॥15-25-9॥

[तत्र (tatra) - there; आश्रपदं (āśramapadam) - hermitage site; धीमान् (dhīmān) - wise; अभिगम्य (abhigamya) - having approached; सः (saḥ) - he; पार्थिवः (pārthivaḥ) - king; आससाद (āsasāda) - reached; अथ (atha) - then; राजर्षिः (rājarṣiḥ) - royal-sage; शतयूपं (śatayūpam) - Śatayūpa; मनीषिणम् (manīṣiṇam) - sage;]

(There hermitage site wise having approached he king reached then royal-sage Śatayūpa sage.)

There, the wise king, having approached the hermitage site, then encountered the royal-sage Śatayūpa, the wise.

स हि राजा महानासीत्केकयेषु परन्तपः। स पुत्रं मनुजैश्वर्ये निवेश्य वनमाविशत् ॥१५-२५-१०॥

sa hi rājā mahān āsīt kekayeṣu parantapaḥ। sa putraṃ manujaiśvarya niveśya vanam āviśat ॥15-25-10॥

[स (sa) - he; हि (hi) - indeed; राजा (rājā) - king; महान् (mahān) - great; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; केकयेषु (kekayeṣu) - among the Kekayas; परन्तपः (parantapaḥ) - scorcher of foes; स (sa) - he; पुत्रम् (putram) - son; मनुजैश्वर्ये (manujaiśvarya) - in human sovereignty; निवेश्य (niveśya) - having installed; वनम् (vanam) - forest; आविशत् (āviśat) - entered;]

तेनासौ सहितो राजा ययौ व्यासाश्रमं तदा। तत्रैनं विधिवद्राजन्प्रत्यगृह्णात्कुरूद्वहम् ॥१५-२५-११॥

tenāsau sahito rājā yayau vyāsāśramaṃ tadā। tatra enam vidhivad rājan pratyagṛhṇāt kurūdvaham ॥15-25-11॥

[तेन (tena) - with him; असौ (asau) - this (one); सहितः (sahitaḥ) - together; राजा (rājā) - king; ययौ (yayau) - went; व्यास-आश्रमम् (vyāsa-āśramam) - Vyāsa's hermitage; तदा (tadā) - then; तत्र (tatra) - there; एनम् (enam) - him; विधिवत् (vidhivat) - according to rule; राजन् (rājan) - O king; प्रत्यगृह्णात् (pratyagṛhṇāt) - welcomed; कुरूद्वहम् (kurūdvaham) - the chief of the Kurus;]

(With him, this king together went to Vyāsa's hermitage then. There him, according to rule, O king, welcomed the chief of the Kurus.)

Accompanied by him, the king then went to Vyāsa's hermitage. There, O king, the chief of the Kurus welcomed him according to the proper rites. (15-25-11)

स दीक्षां तत्र सम्प्राप्य राजा कौरवनन्दनः। शतयूपाश्रमे तस्मिन्निवासमकरोत्तदा ॥१५-२५-१२॥

sa dīkṣāṃ tatra samprāpya rājā kauravanandanaḥ। śatayūpāśrame tasminnivāsamakarottadā ॥15-25-12॥

(He, having obtained initiation there, the king, delight of the Kauravas, in that hermitage of Śatayūpa made residence then.)

तस्मै सर्वं विधिं राजन्राजाचख्यौ महामतिः। आरण्यकं महाराज व्यासस्यानुमते तदा ॥१५-२५-१३॥

tasmai sarvaṃ vidhiṃ rājan rājācakakhyau mahāmatiḥ। āraṇyakaṃ mahārāja vyāsasyānumate tadā ॥15-25-13॥

(To him, all procedure, O king, the king declared, the great-minded one, the Aranyaka, O great king, of Vyāsa, with the consent, then.)

तथैव देवी गान्धारी वल्कलाजिनवासिनी। कुन्त्या सह महाराज समानव्रतचारिणी ॥१५-२५-१५॥

tathaiva devī gāndhārī valkalājinavāsinī। kultyā saha mahārāja samānavratacāriṇī ॥15-25-15॥

[तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; also; thus; देवी (devī) - lady; goddess; respectful woman; गान्धारी (gāndhārī) - Gāndhārī (proper noun); वल्कलाजिनवासिनी (valkalājinavāsinī) - wearing bark and deerskin; कुन्त्या (kultyā) - with Kuntī; सह (saha) - together with; with; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; समानव्रतचारिणी (samānavratacāriṇī) - practicing the same vow;]

(In the same way, lady Gāndhārī, wearing bark and deerskin, together with Kuntī, O great king, practicing the same vow.)

Similarly, lady Gāndhārī, wearing bark and deerskin, faithfully practiced the same vows as Kuntī, O great king. (15-25-15)

कर्मणा मनसा वाचा चक्षुषा चापि ते नृप। संनियम्येन्द्रियग्राममास्थिताः परमं तपः ॥१५-२५-१६॥

karmaṇā manasā vācā cakṣuṣā cāpi te nṛpa। saṃniyamyendriyagrāmam-āsthitāḥ paramaṃ tapaḥ ॥15-25-16॥

[कर्मणा (karmaṇā) - by action; मनसा (manasā) - by mind; वाचा (vācā) - by speech; चक्षुषा (cakṣuṣā) - by eye; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; ते (te) - they; नृप (nṛpa) - O king; संनियम्य (saṃniyamya) - having restrained; इन्द्रियग्रामम् (indriyagrāmam) - the group of senses; आस्थिताः (āsthitāḥ) - engaged in; परमं (paramaṃ) - supreme; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity;]

(By action, by mind, by speech, by eye and also, they, O king, having restrained the group of senses, engaged in supreme austerity.)

त्वगस्थिभूतः परिशुष्कमांसो; जटाजिनी वल्कलसंवृताङ्गः। स पार्थिवस्तत्र तपश्चचार; महर्षिवत्तीव्रमपेतदोषः ॥१५-२५-१७॥

tvag-asthi-bhūtaḥ pariśuṣka-māṁsaḥ; jaṭā-jinī valkala-saṁvṛta-aṅgaḥ। sa pārthivaḥ tatra tapaḥ cacāra; mahaṛṣi-vat tīvraṁ apeta-doṣaḥ ॥15-25-17॥

[त्वगस्थिभूतः (tvag-asthi-bhūtaḥ) - having become (only) skin and bones; परिशुष्कमांसः (pariśuṣka-māṁsaḥ) - with dried-up flesh; जटाजिनी (jaṭā-jinī) - with matted hair and a deerskin; वल्कलसंवृताङ्गः (valkala-saṁvṛta-aṅgaḥ) - body covered with bark garments; स (sa) - he; पार्थिवः (pārthivaḥ) - king; तत्र (tatra) - there; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; चचार (cacāra) - practiced; महर्षिवत् (maharṣivat) - like a great sage; तीव्रम् (tīvram) - intense; अपेतदोषः (apeta-doṣaḥ) - free from faults;]

(Having become skin and bones, with dried-up flesh; with matted hair and a deerskin, body covered with bark garments; he, the king, there, practiced austerity; like a great sage, intense, free from faults.)

क्षत्ता च धर्मार्थविदग्र्यबुद्धिः; ससञ्जयस्तं नृपतिं सदारम्। उपाचरद्घोरतपो जितात्मा; तदा कृशो वल्कलचीरवासाः ॥१५-२५-१८॥

kṣattā ca dharmārthavid-agryabuddhiḥ; sa-saṃjayaḥ taṃ nṛpatiṃ sadāram। upācarad ghoratapaḥ jitātmā; tadā kṛśaḥ valkalacīravāsāḥ ॥15-25-18॥

[क्षत्ता (kṣattā) - the charioteer; च (ca) - and; धर्मार्थविद (dharmārthavid) - knower of dharma and artha; अग्र्यबुद्धिः (agryabuddhiḥ) - having distinguished intellect; ससञ्जयः (sa-saṃjayaḥ) - with Sañjaya; तं (tam) - him; नृपतिं (nṛpatiṃ) - king; सदारम् (sadāram) - with his wife; उपाचरत् (upācarat) - attended; घोरतपः (ghoratapaḥ) - one engaged in severe austerity; जितात्मा (jitātmā) - self-controlled; तदा (tadā) - then; कृशः (kṛśaḥ) - emaciated; वल्कलचीरवासाः (valkalacīravāsāḥ) - clad in bark and rags;]

(The charioteer and knower of dharma and artha, having distinguished intellect, with Sañjaya, attended that king with his wife; (he was) engaged in severe austerity, self-controlled, then emaciated, clad in bark and rags.)

The charioteer,, wise in dharma and artha and possessing distinguished intellect, together with Sañjaya, attended the king and his wife, practicing severe austerity, self-controlled, emaciated, and clad in bark and rags. (15-25-18)
