वनं गते कौरवेन्द्रे दुःखशोकसमाहताः। बभूवुः पाण्डवा राजन्मातृशोकेन चार्दिताः ॥१५-२८-१॥
vanaṁ gate kauravendre duḥkhaśokasamāhatāḥ। babhūvuḥ pāṇḍavā rājan mātṛśokena cārditāḥ॥15-28-1॥
[वनम् (vanam) - forest; गते (gate) - having gone; कौरवेन्द्रे (kauravendre) - O king of the Kauravas; दुःखशोकसमाहताः (duḥkhaśokasamāhatāḥ) - afflicted by sorrow and grief; बभूवुः (babhūvuḥ) - became; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; राजन् (rājan) - O king; मातृशोकेन (mātṛśokena) - by the grief for (their) mother; च (ca) - and; आर्दिताः (ārditāḥ) - distressed;]
(Having gone to the forest, O king of Kauravas, afflicted by sorrow and grief; the Pāṇḍavas, O king, became distressed also by the grief for (their) mother.)
When the king of the Kauravas went to the forest, the Pāṇḍavas, O king, became deeply afflicted by grief and sorrow for their mother. (15-28-1)
तथा पौरजनः सर्वः शोचन्नास्ते जनाधिपम्। कुर्वाणाश्च कथास्तत्र ब्राह्मणा नृपतिं प्रति ॥१५-२८-२॥
tathā paurajanaḥ sarvaḥ śocann āste janādhipam। kurvāṇāś ca kathās tatra brāhmaṇā nṛpatiṃ prati ॥15-28-2॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; पौरजनः (paurajanaḥ) - citizens; सर्वः (sarvaḥ) - all; शोचन् (śocan) - lamenting; आस्ते (āste) - remains; जनाधिपम् (janādhipam) - the king; कुर्वाणाः (kurvāṇāḥ) - making; च (ca) - and; कथाः (kathāḥ) - stories; तत्र (tatra) - there; ब्राह्मणाः (brāhmaṇāḥ) - brāhmaṇas; नृपतिम् (nṛpatim) - the king; प्रतिस् (prati) - towards;]
(Thus all the citizens, lamenting, remain (regarding) the king. And there, the brāhmaṇas make stories towards the king.)
Thus, all the citizens, lamenting, remain focused on the king. And there, the brāhmaṇas recount stories concerning the king. (15-28-2)
कथं नु राजा वृद्धः स वने वसति निर्जने। गान्धारी च महाभागा सा च कुन्ती पृथा कथम् ॥१५-२८-३॥
kathaṁ nu rājā vṛddhaḥ sa vane vasati nirjane। gāndhārī ca mahābhāgā sā ca kuntī pṛthā katham ॥15-28-3॥
[कथं (kathaṁ) - how; नु (nu) - indeed; राजा (rājā) - king; वृद्धः (vṛddhaḥ) - aged; सः (sa) - he; वने (vane) - in the forest; वसति (vasati) - dwells; निर्जने (nirjane) - solitary; गान्धारी (gāndhārī) - Gāndhārī; च (ca) - and; महाभागा (mahābhāgā) - most fortunate; सा (sā) - she; च (ca) - and; कुन्ती (kuntī) - Kuntī; पृथा (pṛthā) - Pṛthā; कथम् (katham) - how;]
(How indeed does the aged king dwell in the solitary forest? Gāndhārī, most fortunate, and she, Kuntī, Pṛthā — how?)
How does the aged king live in the lonely forest? And how are Gāndhārī, the most fortunate, and Kuntī, Pṛthā? (15-28-3)
सुखार्हः स हि राजर्षिर्न सुखं तन्महावनम्। किमवस्थः समासाद्य प्रज्ञाचक्षुर्हतात्मजः ॥१५-२८-४॥
sukhārhaḥ sa hi rājarṣiḥ na sukhaṃ tan mahāvanam। kim avasthaḥ samāsādya prajñācakṣur hatātmajaḥ ॥15-28-4॥
[सुखार्हः (sukhārhaḥ) - worthy of happiness; स (sa) - he; हि (hi) - indeed; राजर्षिः (rājarṣiḥ) - royal sage; न (na) - not; सुखं (sukham) - happiness; तन्महावनम् (tan mahāvanam) - that great forest; किमवस्थः (kim avasthaḥ) - in what condition; समासाद्य (samāsādya) - having reached; प्रज्ञाचक्षुः (prajñācakṣuḥ) - wise seer; हतात्मजः (hatātmajaḥ) - whose son was slain;]
(Worthy of happiness, he indeed, the royal sage, not happiness that great forest. In what condition, having reached, the wise seer whose son was slain?)
He, the royal sage worthy of happiness, indeed did not find happiness in that great forest. In what condition, having arrived there, was the wise seer whose son had been slain? (15-28-4)
सुदुष्करं कृतवती कुन्ती पुत्रानपश्यती। राज्यश्रियं परित्यज्य वनवासमरोचयत् ॥१५-२८-५॥
suduṣkaraṁ kṛtavatī kuntī putrān apaśyatī। rājyaśriyaṁ parityajya vanavāsam arocayat ॥15-28-5॥
[सुदुष्करं (suduṣkaraṁ) - very difficult (thing); कृतवती (kṛtavatī) - she who has done; she who has accomplished; कुन्ती (kuntī) - Kuntī (proper noun); पुत्रान् (putrān) - sons (accusative plural); अपश्यती (apaśyatī) - not seeing; राज्यश्रियं (rājyaśriyaṁ) - the splendor of the kingdom (accusative singular); परित्यज्य (parityajya) - renouncing; giving up; वनवासम् (vanavāsam) - forest-dwelling; stay in the forest; अरोचयत् (arocayat) - she chose; she desired;]
(Very difficult deed accomplished Kuntī, not seeing (her) sons. Royal splendor having renounced, forest-dwelling she chose.)
Kuntī, having accomplished a very difficult act and not seeing her sons, renounced the splendor of the kingdom and chose a life in the forest. (15-28-5)
विदुरः किमवस्थश्च भ्रातुः शुश्रूषुरात्मवान्। स च गावल्गणिर्धीमान्भर्तृपिण्डानुपालकः ॥१५-२८-६॥
viduraḥ kimavasthaś ca bhrātuḥ śuśrūṣur ātmavān। sa ca gāvalgaṇir dhīmān bhartṛpiṇḍānupālakaḥ ॥15-28-6॥
[विदुरः (viduraḥ) - Vidura; किम् (kim) - what; अवस्थः (avasthaḥ) - state; condition; च (ca) - and; भ्रातुः (bhrātuḥ) - of the brother; शुश्रूषुः (śuśrūṣuḥ) - one desirous to serve; आत्मवान् (ātmavān) - self-possessed; steadfast; स (sa) - he; च (ca) - and; गावल्गणिः (gāvalgaṇiḥ) - the son of Gāvalgaṇa; Sañjaya; धीमान् (dhīmān) - wise; भर्तृपिण्ड (bhartṛpiṇḍa) - the food of the master; अनुपालकः (anupālakaḥ) - one who maintains; protector;]
(Vidura, what condition and of the brother desirer to serve, self-possessed; he also Gāvalgaṇa's son, wise, the master's food maintainer.)
What was the condition of Vidura, the steadfast servant of his brother? And also Sañjaya, the wise son of Gāvalgaṇa who maintained his master's sustenance? (15-28-6)
आकुमारं च पौरास्ते चिन्ताशोकसमाहताः। तत्र तत्र कथाश्चक्रुः समासाद्य परस्परम् ॥१५-२८-७॥
ākumāraṃ ca paurās te cintāśoka-samāhatāḥ। tatra tatra kathāś cakruḥ samāsādya parasparam॥15-28-7॥
[आकुमारं (ākumāram) - until youth; च (ca) - and; पौराः (paurāḥ) - citizens; ते (te) - they; चिन्ताशोकसमाहताः (cintāśoka-samāhatāḥ) - afflicted by worry and grief; तत्र तत्र (tatra tatra) - here and there; कथाः (kathāḥ) - conversations; चक्रुः (cakruḥ) - made; समासाद्य (samāsādya) - approaching; परस्परम् (parasparam) - one another;]
(And until youth, those citizens, afflicted by worry and grief, here and there made conversations, approaching one another.)
Afflicted by worry and grief, those citizens, from childhood onward, approached one another and engaged in conversations here and there. (15-28-7)
पाण्डवाश्चैव ते सर्वे भृशं शोकपरायणाः। शोचन्तो मातरं वृद्धामूषुर्नातिचिरं पुरे ॥१५-२८-८॥
pāṇḍavāś caiva te sarve bhṛśaṁ śoka-parāyaṇāḥ। śocanto mātaraṁ vṛddhām ūṣur nāti-ciraṁ pure ॥15-28-8॥
[पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; ते (te) - they; सर्वे (sarve) - all; भृशं (bhṛśam) - exceedingly; शोकपरायणाः (śoka-parāyaṇāḥ) - devoted to (overcome by) grief; शोचन्तः (śocantaḥ) - grieving; मातरं (mātaram) - the mother; वृद्धाम् (vṛddhām) - aged; ऊषुः (ūṣuḥ) - they dwelt; न (na) - not; अति-चिरं (ati-ciraṁ) - for very long; पुरे (pure) - in the city;]
(The Pāṇḍavas and indeed all they, exceedingly devoted to grief, grieving the aged mother, they dwelt not for very long in the city.)
The Pāṇḍavas, all of them, overwhelmed by intense grief, remained grieving for their elderly mother, but did not stay very long in the city. (15-28-8)
तथैव पितरं वृद्धं हतपुत्रं जनेश्वरम्। गान्धारीं च महाभागां विदुरं च महामतिम् ॥१५-२८-९॥
tathaiva pitaraṃ vṛddhaṃ hataputraṃ janeśvaram। gāndhārīṃ ca mahābhāgāṃ viduraṃ ca mahāmatim ॥15-28-9॥
[तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; also; पितरं (pitaraṃ) - father; (accusative singular masculine of pitṛ; वृद्धं (vṛddham) - aged; old; हतपुत्रं (hataputram) - whose son (putra) was slain (hata); bereaved of son; जनेश्वरम् (janeśvaram) - lord of men; गान्धारीं (gāndhārīṃ) - Gāndhārī; (proper noun; accusative singular feminine; च (ca) - and; महाभागां (mahābhāgāṃ) - most fortunate; greatly blessed (accusative singular feminine; विदुरं (viduram) - Vidura; (proper noun; accusative singular masculine; च (ca) - and; महामतिम् (mahāmatim) - of great intelligence; very wise (accusative singular masculine;]
(In the same way, the father aged, bereaved of son, lord of men; Gāndhārī and most fortunate, Vidura and very wise.)
In the same way, the aged father, king whose son was slain, Gāndhārī the greatly blessed, and Vidura the very wise (were also addressed). (15-28-9)
नैषां बभूव सम्प्रीतिस्तान्विचिन्तयतां तदा। न राज्ये न च नारीषु न वेदाध्ययने तथा ॥१५-२८-१०॥
naiṣāṃ babhūva samprītis tān vicintayatāṃ tadā। na rājye na ca nārīṣu na vedādhyayane tathā ॥15-28-10॥
[नैषाम् (naiṣām) - not for these; बभूव (babhūva) - there was; सम्प्रीतिः (samprītiḥ) - satisfaction; तान् (tān) - those; विचिन्तयताम् (vicintayatām) - for thinking; तदा (tadā) - then; न (na) - not; राज्ये (rājye) - in kingdom; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; नारीषु (nārīṣu) - in women; न (na) - not; वेदाध्ययने (vedādhyayane) - in study of the Vedas; तथा (tathā) - also;]
(Not for these was there satisfaction for those thinking then, not in the kingdom, nor in women, nor in the study of the Vedas also.)
At that time, there was no satisfaction for those thinking men, neither in the kingdom, nor in women, nor even in the study of the Vedas. (15-28-10)
परं निर्वेदमगमंश्चिन्तयन्तो नराधिपम्। तच्च ज्ञातिवधं घोरं संस्मरन्तः पुनः पुनः ॥१५-२८-११॥
paraṃ nirvedam agamanś cintayanto narādhipam। tac ca jñātivadhaṃ ghoraṃ saṃsmarantaḥ punaḥ punaḥ ॥15-28-11॥
[परम् (param) - extreme; निर्वेदम् (nirvedam) - dispassion; अगमन् (agaman) - they reached; चिन्तयन्तः (cintayantaḥ) - thinking; नराधिपम् (narādhipam) - the king; तत् (tat) - that; च (ca) - and; ज्ञातिवधम् (jñātivadham) - the slaughter of kinsmen; घोरम् (ghoram) - terrible; संस्मरन्तः (saṃsmarantaḥ) - remembering; पुनः पुनः (punaḥ punaḥ) - again and again;]
(Extreme dispassion they reached, thinking of the king; and that slaughter of kinsmen, terrible, remembering again and again.)
Thinking of the king and repeatedly recalling that terrible slaughter of their kinsmen, they fell into deep dispassion. (15-28-11)
अभिमन्योश्च बालस्य विनाशं रणमूर्धनि। कर्णस्य च महाबाहोः सङ्ग्रामेष्वपलायिनः ॥१५-२८-१२॥
abhimanyoś ca bālasya vināśaṃ raṇamūrdhani. karṇasya ca mahābāhoḥ saṅgrāmeṣv apalāyinaḥ ॥15-28-12॥
[अभिमन्योः (abhimanyoḥ) - of Abhimanyu; च (ca) - and; बालस्य (bālasya) - of the boy; विनाशं (vināśam) - destruction; रणमूर्धनि (raṇamūrdhani) - on the head of battle; कर्णस्य (karṇasya) - of Karṇa; च (ca) - and; महाबाहोः (mahābāhoḥ) - of the mighty-armed one; सङ्ग्रामेषु (saṅgrāmeṣu) - in battles; अपलायिनः (apalāyinaḥ) - not fleeing;]
(of Abhimanyu and of the boy, destruction on the head of battle; of Karṇa and of the mighty-armed one, in battles not fleeing.)
The destruction of Abhimanyu, the boy, occurred at the height of battle; and Karṇa, the mighty-armed one, never fled in battles. (15-28-12)
तथैव द्रौपदेयानामन्येषां सुहृदामपि। वधं संस्मृत्य ते वीरा नातिप्रमनसोऽभवन् ॥१५-२८-१३॥
tathaiva draupadeyānām anyeṣāṃ suhṛdām api. vadhaṃ saṃsmṛtya te vīrā nātipramanaso'bhavan ॥15-28-13॥
[तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; similarly; द्रौपदेयानाम् (draupadeyānām) - of the sons of Draupadī; अन्येषाम् (anyeṣām) - of others; सुहृदाम् (suhṛdām) - of friends; अपि (api) - also; वधम् (vadham) - slaying; killing; संस्मृत्य (saṃsmṛtya) - having remembered; ते (te) - they; वीराः (vīrāḥ) - heroes; warriors; न (na) - not; अति (ati) - exceedingly; very; प्रमसना (pramanasaḥ) - happy in mind; pleased; अभवन् (abhavan) - became; were;]
(In the same way, of the sons of Draupadī, of other friends also, the killing having remembered, they heroes not exceedingly happy in mind became.)
Similarly, when they remembered the slaughter of the sons of Draupadī and of their other friends, those warriors were not very happy in mind. (15-28-13)
हतप्रवीरां पृथिवीं हतरत्नां च भारत। सदैव चिन्तयन्तस्ते न निद्रामुपलेभिरे ॥१५-२८-१४॥
hatapravīrāṃ pṛthivīṃ hataratnāṃ ca bhārata। sadaiva cintayantaste na nidrāmupalebhire ॥15-28-14॥
[हतप्रवीरां (hatapravīrām) - having lost heroes; पृथिवीं (pṛthivīm) - the earth; हतरत्नां (hataratnām) - having lost gems (treasures); च (ca) - and; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; सदैव (sadaiva) - always; चिन्तयन्तः (cintayantaḥ) - thinking; ते (te) - they; न (na) - not; निद्राम् (nidrām) - sleep; उपलेभिरे (upalebhire) - obtained;]
(Having lost heroes, the earth, having lost treasures also, O Bhārata, always thinking, they did not obtain sleep.)
O Bhārata, always thinking of the earth bereft of heroes and treasures, they could not obtain sleep. (15-28-14)
द्रौपदी हतपुत्रा च सुभद्रा चैव भामिनी। नातिप्रीतियुते देव्यौ तदास्तामप्रहृष्टवत् ॥१५-२८-१५॥
draupadī hataputrā ca subhadrā caiva bhāminī। nātiprītiyute devyau tadāstāmaprahṛṣṭavat ॥15-28-15॥
[द्रौपदी (draupadī) (draupadī) - Draupadi; हतपुत्रा (hataputrā) (hataputrā) - whose son was slain; च (ca) (ca) - and; सुभद्रा (subhadrā) (subhadrā) - Subhadra; च (ca) (ca) - and; एव (eva) (eva) - indeed; भामिनी (bhāminī) (bhāminī) - the radiant (lady); नातिप्रीतियुते (nātiprītiyute) (nātiprītiyute) - not greatly pleased; देव्यौ (devyau) (devyau) - the two queens; तदा (tadā) (tadā) - then; अस्ताम् (astām) (astām) - remained; अप्रहृष्टवत् (aprahṛṣṭavat) (aprahṛṣṭavat) - without joy;]
(Draupadi, whose son was slain, and Subhadra indeed, the radiant one, not greatly pleased, the two queens then remained without joy.)
Draupadi, having lost her son, and Subhadra the radiant, both queens, not greatly pleased, then remained joyless. (15-28-15)
वैराट्यास्तु सुतं दृष्ट्वा पितरं ते परिक्षितम्। धारयन्ति स्म ते प्राणांस्तव पूर्वपितामहाः ॥१५-२८-१६॥
vairāṭyās tu sutaṁ dṛṣṭvā pitaraṁ te parikṣitam। dhārayanti sma te prāṇāṁs tava pūrvapitāmahāḥ ॥15-28-16॥
[वैराट्याः (vairāṭyāḥ) - of the queen of Virāṭa; तु (tu) - but; सुतं (sutaṁ) - son; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; पितरं (pitaraṁ) - the father; ते (te) - your; परिक्षितम् (parikṣitam) - Parikṣit; धारयन्ति (dhārayanti) - they sustained; स्म (sma) - in the past; ते (te) - your; प्राणान् (prāṇān) - lives; तव (tava) - your; पूर्वपितामहाः (pūrvapitāmahāḥ) - earlier forefathers;]
(But having seen the son of the queen of Virāṭa, your father Parikṣit, your earlier forefathers sustained their lives in the past.)
But your earlier forefathers sustained their lives in the past when they saw the son born to the queen of Virāṭa, your father Parikṣit. (15-28-16)
