ततस्ते भरतश्रेष्ठाः समाजग्मुः परस्परम्। विगतक्रोधमात्सर्याः सर्वे विगतकल्मषाः ॥१५-४१-१॥
tataste bharataśreṣṭhāḥ samājagmuḥ parasparam। vigatakrodhamātsaryāḥ sarve vigatakalmaṣāḥ ॥15-41-1॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; ते (te) - they; भरतश्रेष्ठाः (bharataśreṣṭhāḥ) - best of the Bharatas; समाजग्मुः (samājagmuḥ) - approached; परस्परम् (parasparam) - to each other; विगतक्रोधमात्सर्याः (vigatakrodhamātsaryāḥ) - free from anger and envy; सर्वे (sarve) - all; विगतकल्मषाः (vigatakalmaṣāḥ) - free from sin;]
(Then they, best of the Bharatas, approached each other, all free from anger and envy, all free from sin.)
Then those best of the Bharatas approached each other, all entirely free from anger, envy, and sin. (15-41-1)
विधिं परममास्थाय ब्रह्मर्षिविहितं शुभम्। सम्प्रीतमनसः सर्वे देवलोक इवामराः ॥१५-४१-२॥
vidhiṁ paramam āsthāya brahmarṣi-vihitaṁ śubham। samprīta-mānasaḥ sarve deva-loka iva amaraḥ ॥15-41-2॥
[विधिं (vidhiṁ) (vidhiṁ) - rite (accusative singular); परमम् (paramam) (paramam) - highest; supreme; आस्थाय (āsthāya) (āsthāya) - having resorted to; relying upon; ब्रह्मर्षिविहितं (brahmarṣi-vihitam) (brahmarṣi-vihitam) - instituted by the Brahmaṛṣis; established by brahmarṣis; शुभम् (śubham) (śubham) - auspicious; सम्प्रीतमनसः (samprīta-mānasaḥ) (samprīta-mānasaḥ) - with their minds pleased; सर्वे (sarve) (sarve) - all; everyone; देवलोक (deva-loka) (deva-loka) - the world of the gods; इव (iva) (iva) - like; as if; अमराः (amarāḥ) (amarāḥ) - immortals; gods;]
(Having resorted to the supreme rite instituted by the Brahmarṣis, auspicious, all with their minds pleased, like the gods in the world of the gods, (they were) immortals.)
All, with pleased minds, performed the supreme and auspicious rite established by the Brahmarṣis, like the gods in the world of the immortals. (15-41-2)
पुत्रः पित्रा च मात्रा च भार्या च पतिना सह। भ्राता भ्रात्रा सखा चैव सख्या राजन्समागताः ॥१५-४१-३॥
putraḥ pitrā ca mātrā ca bhāryā ca patinā saha। bhrātā bhrātrā sakhā caiva sakhyā rājansamāgatāḥ ॥15-41-3॥
[पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; पित्रा (pitrā) - with father; च (ca) - and; मात्रा (mātrā) - with mother; च (ca) - and; भार्या (bhāryā) - wife; च (ca) - and; पतिना (patinā) - with husband; सह (saha) - together with; भ्राता (bhrātā) - brother; भ्रात्रा (bhrātrā) - with brother; सखा (sakhā) - friend; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; सख्या (sakhyā) - with friend; राजन् (rājan) - O king; समागताः (samāgatāḥ) - having come together;]
(Son with father and with mother and wife and with husband together with, brother with brother, friend and indeed with friend, O king, having come together.)
O king, the son with his father, the wife with her husband, the brother with his brother, the friend indeed with his friend — all have assembled together. (15-41-3)
पाण्डवास्तु महेष्वासं कर्णं सौभद्रमेव च। सम्प्रहर्षात्समाजग्मुर्द्रौपदेयांश्च सर्वशः ॥१५-४१-४॥
pāṇḍavās tu maheṣvāsaṃ karṇaṃ saubhadrameva ca। sampraharṣāt samājagmur draupadeyāṃś ca sarvaśaḥ ॥15-41-4॥
[पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; तु (tu) - but; महेष्वासम् (maheṣvāsam) - the great archer; कर्णम् (karṇam) - Karna; सौभद्रम् (saubhadram) - the son of Subhadrā; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and; सम्प्रहर्षात् (sampraharṣāt) - out of great delight; समाजग्मुः (samājagmuḥ) - approached; द्रौपदेयान् (draupadeyān) - the sons of Draupadī; च (ca) - and; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - altogether;]
(But the Pāṇḍavas, the great archer Karṇa, the son of Subhadrā indeed, and out of great delight, approached the sons of Draupadī altogether.)
But the Pāṇḍavas, the mighty archer Karṇa, the son of Subhadrā, and, in great joy, all went to the sons of Draupadī. (15-41-4)
ततस्ते प्रीयमाणा वै कर्णेन सह पाण्डवाः। समेत्य पृथिवीपालाः सौहृदेऽवस्थिताभवन् ॥१५-४१-५॥
tataste prīyamāṇā vai karṇena saha pāṇḍavāḥ। sametya pṛthivīpālāḥ sauhṛde'vasthitābhavan ॥15-41-5॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; ते (te) - they; प्रीयमाणा (prīyamāṇā) - becoming friendly; वै (vai) - indeed; कर्णेन (karṇena) - with Karṇa; सह (saha) - together; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; समेत्य (sametya) - having joined; पृथिवीपालाः (pṛthivīpālāḥ) - the lords of the earth; सौहृदे (sauhṛde) - in friendship; अवस्थिताः (avasthitāḥ) - remained; अभवन् (abhavan) - became;]
(Then they, indeed becoming friendly, the Pāṇḍavas together with Karṇa, having assembled, the lords of the earth, in friendship, remained became.)
Then, indeed, the Pāṇḍavas together with Karṇa, having come together, and the lords of the earth, all remained established in friendship. (15-41-5)
ऋषिप्रसादात्तेऽन्ये च क्षत्रिया नष्टमन्यवः। असौहृदं परित्यज्य सौहृदे पर्यवस्थिताः ॥१५-४१-६॥
ṛṣiprasādāt te 'nye ca kṣatriyā naṣṭamanyavaḥ। asauhṛdaṃ parityajya sauhṛde paryavasthitāḥ॥15-41-6॥
[ऋषिप्रसादात् (ṛṣiprasādāt) - by the favor of the sage; ते (te) - they; अन्ये (anye) - others; च (ca) - and; क्षत्रियाः (kṣatriyāḥ) - kṣatriyas; नष्टमन्यवः (naṣṭamanyavaḥ) - whose arrogance is destroyed; असौहृदम् (asauhṛdam) - enmity; परित्यज्य (parityajya) - having abandoned; सौहृदे (sauhṛde) - in friendship; पर्यवस्थिताः (paryavasthitāḥ) - remained;]
(By the favor of the sage, they and the other kṣatriyas, whose arrogance was destroyed, having abandoned enmity, remained in friendship.)
By the sage's favor, they and the other kṣatriyas, with their pride gone, gave up enmity and abided in friendship. (15-41-6)
एवं समागताः सर्वे गुरुभिर्बान्धवैस्तथा। पुत्रैश्च पुरुषव्याघ्राः कुरवोऽन्ये च मानवाः ॥१५-४१-७॥
evaṁ samāgatāḥ sarve gurubhirbāndhavaistathā, putraiś ca puruṣavyāghrāḥ kuravo'nye ca mānavāḥ॥15-41-7॥
[एवं (evaṁ) - thus; समागताः (samāgatāḥ) - having assembled; सर्वे (sarve) - all; गुरुभिः (gurubhiḥ) - with elders; बान्धवैः (bāndhavaiḥ) - with kinsmen; तथा (tathā) - also; पुत्रैः (putraiḥ) - with sons; च (ca) - and; पुरुषव्याघ्राः (puruṣavyāghrāḥ) - tiger-men; कुरवः (kuravaḥ) - the Kurus; अन्ये (anye) - others; च (ca) - and; मानवाः (mānavāḥ) - men;]
(Thus, having assembled, all, with elders, also with kinsmen, with sons and tiger-men, the Kurus and others and men.)
Thus all, having assembled along with elders, kinsmen, sons, and mighty men, the Kurus and others, gathered together. (15-41-7)
तां रात्रिमेकां कृत्स्नां ते विहृत्य प्रीतमानसाः। मेनिरे परितोषेण नृपाः स्वर्गसदो यथा ॥१५-४१-८॥
tāṃ rātrim ekāṃ kṛtsnāṃ te vihṛtya prītamānasāḥ। menire paritoṣeṇa nṛpāḥ svargasado yathā ॥15-41-8॥
[तां (tāṃ) - that (night); रात्रिम् (rātrim) - night (object); एकां (ekāṃ) - one (single); कृत्स्नां (kṛtsnāṃ) - whole; complete; ते (te) - they; विहृत्य (vihṛtya) - having passed/enjoyed; प्रीतमानसाः (prītamānasāḥ) - with pleased minds; मेनिरे (menire) - they considered/thought; परितोषेण (paritoṣeṇa) - with satisfaction; नृपाः (nṛpāḥ) - kings; स्वर्गसदः (svargasadaḥ) - heaven-dwellers; यथा (yathā) - just as;]
(That one whole night having passed, they with pleased minds, the kings, considered with satisfaction just as heaven-dwellers.)
Having spent that entire single night, the kings, their hearts satisfied, felt as content as the dwellers of heaven. (15-41-8)
नात्र शोको भयं त्रासो नारतिर्नायशोऽभवत्। परस्परं समागम्य योधानां भरतर्षभ ॥१५-४१-९॥
nātra śoko bhayaṃ trāso nāratir nāyaśo’bhavat। parasparaṃ samāgamya yodhānāṃ bharatarṣabha ॥15-41-9॥
[न (na) - not; अत्र (atra) - here; शोकः (śokaḥ) - sorrow; भयम् (bhayam) - fear; त्रासः (trāsaḥ) - terror; न (na) - not; अरतिः (aratiḥ) - displeasure; न (na) - not; अयशः (ayaśaḥ) - disgrace; अभवत् (abhavat) - arose; परस्परम् (parasparam) - mutually; समागम्य (samāgamya) - having gathered; योधनाम् (yodhānām) - of the warriors; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O bull of the Bharatas;]
(Not here sorrow, fear, terror, nor displeasure, nor disgrace arose, having gathered mutually of the warriors, O bull of the Bharatas (15-41-9))
O bull of the Bharatas, among the assembled warriors, there was neither sorrow, fear, terror, displeasure, nor disgrace here. (15-41-9)
समागतास्ताः पितृभिर्भ्रातृभिः पतिभिः सुतैः। मुदं परमिकां प्राप्य नार्यो दुःखमथात्यजन् ॥१५-४१-१०॥
samāgatās tāḥ pitṛbhir bhrātṛbhiḥ patibhiḥ sutaiḥ| mudaṃ paramikāṃ prāpya nāryo duḥkham athātyajan॥15-41-10॥
[समागताः (samāgatāḥ) - having come together; ताः (tāḥ) - those; पितृभिः (pitṛbhiḥ) - with their fathers; भ्रातृभिः (bhrātṛbhiḥ) - with brothers; पतिभिः (patibhiḥ) - with husbands; सुतैः (sutaiḥ) - with sons; मुदं (mudaṃ) - happiness; परमिकां (paramikāṃ) - highest; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having obtained; नार्यः (nāryaḥ) - women; दुःखम् (duḥkham) - sorrow; अथ (atha) - then; अत्यजन् (atyajan) - abandoned;]
(Having come together, those (women), with their fathers, brothers, husbands, and sons, having obtained the highest happiness, the women then abandoned sorrow.)
Those women, having come together with their fathers, brothers, husbands, and sons, having attained the greatest happiness, then abandoned their sorrow. (15-41-10)
एकां रात्रिं विहृत्यैवं ते वीरास्ताश्च योषितः। आमन्त्र्यान्योन्यमाश्लिष्य ततो जग्मुर्यथागतम् ॥१५-४१-११॥
ekāṃ rātriṃ vihṛtyaivaṃ te vīrās tāś ca yoṣitaḥ। āmantryānyonyam āśliṣya tato jagmur yathāgatam ॥15-41-11॥
[एकां (ekām) - one; (feminine, accusative); रात्रिं (rātriṃ) - night; (accusative singular); विहृत्य (vihṛtya) - having spent; (absolutive of vihṛ); एवं (evaṃ) - thus; in this manner; ते (te) - they; (masculine plural, nominative); वीराः (vīrāḥ) - heroes; (masculine plural, nominative); ताः (tāḥ) - those; (feminine plural, nominative); च (ca) - and; योषितः (yoṣitaḥ) - women; (feminine plural, nominative); आमन्त्र्य (āmantrya) - having taken leave; having addressed (absolutive form); अन्योन्यम् (anyonyam) - one another; आश्लिष्य (āśliṣya) - having embraced; (absolutive of āśliṣ); ततः (tataḥ) - then; so; thereafter; जग्मुः (jagmuḥ) - they went; (third person plural perfect); यथागतम् (yathāgatam) - as (they) had come; in the manner as come;]
(Having spent one night thus, those heroes and those women, having taken leave of one another, having embraced, then went as (they) had come.)
Thus, having spent one night, the heroes and those women, after bidding each other farewell and embracing, then departed each by the way they had come. (15-41-11)
ततो विसर्जयामास लोकांस्तान्मुनिपुङ्गवः। क्षणेनान्तर्हिताश्चैव प्रेक्षतामेव तेऽभवन् ॥१५-४१-१२॥
tato visarjayāmāsa lokāṃs tān munipuṅgavaḥ। kṣaṇenāntarhitāś caiva prekṣatām eva te 'bhavan॥15-41-12॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; विसर्जयामास (visarjayāmāsa) - sent away; लोकान् (lokān) - beings (accusative plural); तान् (tān) - those; मुनिपुङ्गवः (munipuṅgavaḥ) - the chief of sages; क्षणेन (kṣaṇena) - in a moment; अन्तर्हिताः (antarhitāḥ) - disappeared; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; प्रेक्षताम् (prekṣatām) - while being watched; एव (eva) - indeed; ते (te) - they; अभवन् (abhavan) - became;]
(Then the chief of sages sent away those beings; in a moment, they indeed disappeared while being watched.)
Then the chief of sages sent those beings away; in a moment, they indeed vanished before the very eyes of those watching. (15-41-12)
अवगाह्य महात्मानः पुण्यां त्रिपथगां नदीम्। सरथाः सध्वजाश्चैव स्वानि स्थानानि भेजिरे ॥१५-४१-१३॥
avagāhya mahātmānaḥ puṇyāṃ tripathagāṃ nadīm। sarathāḥ sadhvajāścaiva svāni sthānāni bhejire ॥15-41-13॥
[अवगाह्य (avagāhya) - having bathed in; महात्मानः (mahātmānaḥ) - the great-souled ones; पुण्यां (puṇyāṃ) - holy; त्रिपथगां (tripathagām) - the river flowing on three paths (the Ganga); नदीम् (nadīm) - the river; सरथाः (sarathāḥ) - with chariots; सध्वजाः (sadhvajāḥ) - with banners; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; स्वानि (svāni) - their own; स्थानानि (sthānāni) - places; भेजिरे (bhejire) - they reached;]
(Having bathed, the great-souled ones in the holy river flowing on three paths; with chariots, with banners, and indeed, their own places they reached.)
After bathing in the holy river Gangā, the great-souled ones, with their chariots and banners, indeed reached their own places. (15-41-13)
देवलोकं ययुः केचित्केचिद्ब्रह्मसदस्तथा। केचिच्च वारुणं लोकं केचित्कौबेरमाप्नुवन् ॥१५-४१-१४॥
devalokaṃ yayuḥ kecit kecid brahmasadas tathā. kecic ca vāruṇaṃ lokaṃ kecit kauberam āpnuvan ॥15-41-14॥
[देवलोकं (devalokaṃ) - the world of the gods; ययुः (yayuḥ) - they went; केचित् (kecit) - some; केचित् (kecit) - some; ब्रह्मसदः (brahmasadas) - assembly of Brahmā; तथा (tathā) - also; केचित् (kecit) - some; च (ca) - and; वारुणं (vāruṇam) - of Varuṇa; लोकं (lokaṃ) - world; केचित् (kecit) - some; कौबेरम् (kauberam) - of Kubera; आप्नुवन् (āpnuvan) - they obtained;]
(The world of the gods they went some, some the assembly of Brahmā also; some and the world of Varuṇa, some the world of Kubera they obtained.)
Some went to the world of the gods, some to the assembly of Brahmā; some attained the realm of Varuṇa, and some the world of Kubera. (15-41-14)
तथा वैवस्वतं लोकं केचिच्चैवाप्नुवन्नृपाः। राक्षसानां पिशाचानां केचिच्चाप्युत्तरान्कुरून् ॥१५-४१-१५॥
tathā vaivasvataṃ lokaṃ keciccaivāpnuvan nṛpāḥ। rākṣasānāṃ piśācānāṃ kecic cāpy uttarān kurūn ॥15-41-15॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; in this way; वैवस्वतं (vaivasvatam) - of Yama (son of Vivasvat); लोकं (lokaṃ) - world; realm; केचित् (kecit) - some; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; just; आप्नुवन् (āpnuvan) - attained; reached; नृपाः (nṛpāḥ) - kings; राक्षसानाम् (rākṣasānām) - of the rākṣasas (demons); पिशाचानाम् (piśācānām) - of the piśācas (flesh-eating spirits); केचित् (kecit) - some; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; उत्तरान् (uttarān) - northern; कुरून् (kurūn) - Kurus (the Kuru people/land);]
(Thus the kings, some indeed, attained the world of Vaivasvata (Yama); and of the rākṣasas, of the piśācas, some also attained the northern Kurus.)
In this way, some kings attained the realm of Vaivasvata (Yama); and among the rākṣasas and piśācas, some also reached the land of the northern Kurus. (15-41-15)
विचित्रगतयः सर्वे या अवाप्यामरैः सह। आजग्मुस्ते महात्मानः सवाहाः सपदानुगाः ॥१५-४१-१६॥
vicitragatiyaḥ sarve yā avāpyāmaraiḥ saha। ājagmuste mahātmānaḥ savāhāḥ sapadānugāḥ ॥15-41-16॥
[विचित्रगतयः (vicitragatiyaḥ) - having various movements; सर्वे (sarve) - all; या (yā) - who; अवाप्य (avāpya) - having attained; अमरैः (amaraiḥ) - with immortals; सह (saha) - together; आजग्मुः (ājagmuḥ) - came; ते (te) - they; महात्मानः (mahātmānaḥ) - great-souled ones; सवाहाः (savāhāḥ) - with vehicles; सपदानुगाः (sapadānugāḥ) - with attendants;]
(All who had various movements, who, having attained together with the immortals, they came, the great-souled ones, with vehicles and attendants.)
All those great-souled ones, having attained (their destination) together with the immortals, came with their vehicles and attendants, all moving in various wondrous ways. (15-41-16)
गतेषु तेषु सर्वेषु सलिलस्थो महामुनिः। धर्मशीलो महातेजाः कुरूणां हितकृत्सदा ॥ ततः प्रोवाच ताः सर्वाः क्षत्रिया निहतेश्वराः ॥१५-४१-१७॥
gateṣu teṣu sarveṣu salilastho mahāmuniḥ। dharmaśīlo mahātejāḥ kurūṇāṃ hitakṛtsadā॥ tataḥ provāca tāḥ sarvāḥ kṣatriyā nihateśvarāḥ॥15-41-17॥
[गतेषु (gateṣu) - when those (ones) had gone; तेषु (teṣu) - those; सर्वेषु (sarveṣu) - all; सलिलस्थः (salilasthaḥ) - standing in water; महामुनिः (mahāmuniḥ) - great sage; धर्मशीलः (dharmaśīlaḥ) - having the nature of dharma; महातेजाः (mahātejāḥ) - of great brilliance; कुरूणां (kurūṇām) - of the Kurus; हितकृत् (hitakṛt) - doer of good; सदा (sadā) - always; ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्रोवाच (provāca) - (he) spoke; ताः (tāḥ) - those (women); सर्वाः (sarvāḥ) - all; क्षत्रियाः (kṣatriyāḥ) - Kṣatriya women; निहतेश्वराः (nihateśvarāḥ) - whose lords were slain;]
(When those all had gone, the great sage, standing in water, possessing the nature of dharma, of great brilliance, always a doer of good to the Kurus, then spoke to all those Kṣatriya women whose lords were slain.)
After all those had gone, the great sage—standing in the water, ever virtuous and of great brilliance, always devoted to the welfare of the Kurus—then spoke to all those Kṣatriya women whose husbands were slain. (15-41-17)
या याः पतिकृताँल्लोकानिच्छन्ति परमस्त्रियः। ता जाह्नवीजलं क्षिप्रमवगाहन्त्वतन्द्रिताः ॥१५-४१-१८॥
yā yāḥ patikṛtāṃl lokān icchanti paramāḥ striyaḥ। tā jāhnavī-jalaṃ kṣipram avagāhantu atandritāḥ॥15-41-18॥
[या याः (yā yāḥ) - whoever (feminine plural); पतिकृताँल्लोकान् (patikṛtān lokān) - worlds attained by (their) husband; इच्छन्ति (icchanti) - desire; परमः स्त्रियः (paramāḥ striyaḥ) - excellent women; ता (tā) - they; जाह्नवीजलं (jāhnavī-jalam) - waters of the Jahnavi (Ganga); क्षिप्रम् (kṣipram) - quickly; अवगाहन्तु (avagāhantu) - should bathe in; अतन्द्रिताः (atandritāḥ) - without sloth;]
(Whoever excellent women desire the worlds attained by (their) husband, they, without sloth, should quickly bathe in the waters of Jahnavi.)
Those excellent women who wish for the worlds attained by their husbands should quickly, without delay, bathe in the waters of the Jahnavi (Ganga). (15-41-18)
ततस्तस्य वचः श्रुत्वा श्रद्दधाना वराङ्गनाः। श्वशुरं समनुज्ञाप्य विविशुर्जाह्नवीजलम् ॥१५-४१-१९॥
tatas tasya vacaḥ śrutvā śraddadhānā varāṅganāḥ। śvaśuraṃ samanujñāpya viviśur jāhnavī-jalam ॥15-41-19॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तस्य (tasya) - his; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; श्रद्दधाना (śraddadhānāḥ) - having faith; वराङ्गनाः (varāṅganāḥ) - noble women; श्वशुरम् (śvaśuram) - father-in-law; समनुज्ञाप्य (samanujñāpya) - having properly obtained permission; विविशुः (viviśuḥ) - entered; जाह्नवीजलम् (jāhnavī-jalam) - the water of the Jāhnavī (Gaṅgā);]
(Then, having heard his speech, the noble women, having faith, after having properly obtained permission from their father-in-law, entered the water of the Jāhnavī.)
Then those noble women, full of faith, after hearing his speech and properly obtaining permission from their father-in-law, entered into the waters of the Jāhnavī (Gaṅgā). (15-41-19)
विमुक्ता मानुषैर्देहैस्ततस्ता भर्तृभिः सह। समाजग्मुस्तदा साध्व्यः सर्वा एव विशां पते ॥१५-४१-२०॥
vimuktā mānuṣair dehais tatastā bhartṛbhiḥ saha। samājagmus tadā sādhvyaḥ sarvā eva viśāṃ pate ॥15-41-20॥
[विमुक्ताः (vimuktāḥ) - released; freed; मानुषैः (mānuṣaiḥ) - from human; by men; देहैः (dehaiḥ) - bodies; ततस् (tatas) - then; after that; ता (tā) - they; those; भर्तृभिः (bhartṛbhiḥ) - with husbands; सह (saha) - together; with; समाजग्मुः (samājagmuḥ) - approached; came together; तदा (tadā) - then; at that time; साध्व्यः (sādhvyaḥ) - virtuous women; noble ladies; सर्वा एव (sarvā eva) - all indeed; every one; विशां पते (viśāṃ pate) - O lord of the people; O king;]
(Freed by the human bodies, then those together with the husbands, all the virtuous women then approached, O lord of the people.)
O king, then all those virtuous women who had been freed from their human bodies approached together with their husbands. (15-41-20)
एवं क्रमेण सर्वास्ताः शीलवत्यः कुलस्त्रियः। प्रविश्य तोयं निर्मुक्ता जग्मुर्भर्तृसलोकताम् ॥१५-४१-२१॥
evaṁ krameṇa sarvāstāḥ śīlavatyaḥ kulastriyaḥ । praviśya toyaṁ nirmuktā jagmur bhartṛsalokatām ॥15-41-21॥
[एवं (evaṁ) - thus; क्रमेण (krameṇa) - in due order; सर्वाः (sarvāḥ) - all; ताः (tāḥ) - those (women); शीलवत्यः (śīlavatyaḥ) - virtuous; कुलस्त्रियः (kulastriyaḥ) - ladies of noble family; प्रविश्य (praviśya) - having entered; तोयम् (toyam) - water; निर्मुक्ताः (nirmuktāḥ) - freed (from the body); जग्मुः (jagmuḥ) - they went; भर्तृसलोकताम् (bhartṛsalokatām) - state of being in the world of their husbands;]
(Thus, in due order, all those virtuous ladies of noble family, having entered the water, (being) freed, went to the state of dwelling with their husbands (in the other world).)
In this way, one after another, all those virtuous ladies of noble families entered the water and, freed from their bodies, attained the realm where their husbands dwelled. (15-41-21)
दिव्यरूपसमायुक्ता दिव्याभरणभूषिताः। दिव्यमाल्याम्बरधरा यथासां पतयस्तथा ॥१५-४१-२२॥
divyarūpasamāyuktā divyābharaṇabhūṣitāḥ। divyamālyāmbaradharā yathāsāṃ patayastathā ॥15-41-22॥
[दिव्यरूपसमायुक्ता (divyarūpasamāyuktā) - endowed with divine forms; दिव्याभरणभूषिताः (divyābharaṇabhūṣitāḥ) - adorned with divine ornaments; दिव्यमाल्याम्बरधरा (divyamālyāmbaradharā) - wearing divine garlands and garments; यथासां (yathāsāṃ) - as of them; पतयस्तथा (patayastathā) - so were (their) husbands;]
(Endowed with divine forms, adorned with divine ornaments, wearing divine garlands and garments, as of them so were (their) husbands.)
Endowed with divine forms, adorned with divine ornaments, and wearing divine garlands and garments, their husbands were the same as them. (15-41-22)
ताः शीलसत्त्वसम्पन्ना वितमस्का गतक्लमाः। सर्वाः सर्वगुणैर्युक्ताः स्वं स्वं स्थानं प्रपेदिरे ॥१५-४१-२३॥
tāḥ śīla-sattva-sampannā vitamaskā gataklamāḥ। sarvāḥ sarva-guṇaiḥ yuktāḥ svaṃ svaṃ sthānaṃ prapedire ॥15-41-23॥
[ताः (tāḥ) - they (those women); शीलसत्त्वसम्पन्नाः (śīla-sattva-sampannāḥ) - endowed with conduct and fortitude; वितमस्काः (vitamaskāḥ) - free from pride; गतक्लमाः (gataklamāḥ) - having dispelled fatigue; सर्वाः (sarvāḥ) - all; सर्वगुणैः (sarva-guṇaiḥ) - with all virtues; युक्ताः (yuktāḥ) - endowed; स्वं स्वं (svaṃ svaṃ) - each her own; स्थानम् (sthānam) - place; प्रपेदिरे (prapedire) - attained;]
(They, endowed with conduct and fortitude, free from pride, having dispelled fatigue, all, with all virtues endowed, each to her own place attained.)
Those women, possessed of good conduct and fortitude, free from pride and weariness, endowed with all virtues, each went to her own place. (15-41-23)
यस्य यस्य च यः कामस्तस्मिन्कालेऽभवत्तदा। तं तं विसृष्टवान्व्यासो वरदो धर्मवत्सलः ॥१५-४१-२४॥
yasya yasya ca yaḥ kāmas tasmin kāle 'bhavat tadā। taṃ taṃ visṛṣṭavān vyāsaḥ varadaḥ dharmavatsalaḥ ॥15-41-24॥
[यस्य यस्य (yasya yasya) - of whichever (person); च (ca) - and; यः (yaḥ) - who; कामः (kāmaḥ) - desire; तस्मिन् काले (tasmin kāle) - at that time; अभवत् (abhavat) - arose; तदा (tadā) - then; तं तं (taṃ taṃ) - that (object/person); विसृष्टवान् (visṛṣṭavān) - he granted; व्यासः (vyāsaḥ) - Vyāsa; वरदः (varadaḥ) - bestower of boons; धर्मवत्सलः (dharmavatsalaḥ) - loving righteousness;]
(Of whichever (person) and which desire at that time arose then; that (object/person) Vyāsa, bestower of boons, loving righteousness, granted.)
To whichever person, whatever desire arose at that time, Vyāsa, the bestower of boons, devoted to righteousness, granted that to each. (15-41-24)
तच्छ्रुत्वा नरदेवानां पुनरागमनं नराः। जहृषुर्मुदिताश्चासन्नन्यदेहगता अपि ॥१५-४१-२५॥
tacchrutvā naradevānāṃ punarāgamanaṃ narāḥ| jahṛṣur muditāś cāsan nyadehagathā api॥15-41-25॥
[तत् (tat) - that; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; नरदेवानाम् (naradevānām) - of the 'king-gods' (kings); पुनः (punaḥ) - again; आगमनम् (āgamanaṃ) - coming, arrival; नराः (narāḥ) - men; जहृषुः (jahṛṣuḥ) - became delighted, rejoiced; मुदिताः (muditāḥ) - gladdened; च (ca) - and; आसन् (āsan) - were; अन्य-देह-गताः (anya-deha-gatāḥ) - those who had gone to other bodies; अपि (api) - even;]
(Having heard that the coming again of the king-gods, men rejoiced, were gladdened, and even those who had gone to other bodies were (gladdened).)
When they heard of the return of the king-gods, the people rejoiced, were gladdened, and even those who had attained other bodies were happy. (15-41-25)
प्रियैः समागमं तेषां य इमं शृणुयान्नरः। प्रियाणि लभते नित्यमिह च प्रेत्य चैव ह ॥१५-४१-२६॥
priyaiḥ samāgamaṃ teṣāṃ ya imaṃ śṛṇuyān naraḥ। priyāṇi labhate nityam iha ca pretya caiva ha ॥15-41-26॥
[प्रियैः (priyaiḥ) - with beloved ones; समागमं (samāgamam) - meeting; union; तेषां (teṣām) - of them; यः (yaḥ) - who; इमं (imaṃ) - this; शृणुयात् (śṛṇuyāt) - would hear; नरः (naraḥ) - man; person; प्रियाणि (priyāṇi) - dear things; लभते (labhate) - obtains; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; इह (iha) - here; च (ca) - and; प्रेत्य (pretya) - having departed; after death; चैव (ca eva) - and indeed; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(With beloved ones meeting of them who this would hear man; dear things obtains always here and after death and indeed.)
Whoever man hears this, he always attains dear things, meeting with beloved ones, both here and indeed after death. (15-41-26)
इष्टबान्धवसंयोगमनायासमनामयम्। य इमं श्रावयेद्विद्वान्संसिद्धिं प्राप्नुयात्पराम् ॥१५-४१-२७॥
iṣṭa-bāndhava-saṃyogaṃ anāyāsaṃ anāmayam। ya imaṃ śrāvayed vidvān saṃsiddhiṃ prāpnuyāt parām॥15-41-27॥
[इष्ट (iṣṭa) - desired; बान्धव (bāndhava) - kinsmen; संयोगम् (saṃyogam) - union; अनायासम् (anāyāsam) - without difficulty; अनामयम् (anāmayam) - free from disease; यः (yaḥ) - who; इमम् (imam) - this; श्रावयेत् (śrāvayet) - makes (someone) hear; विद्वान् (vidvān) - learned one; संसिद्धिम् (saṃsiddhim) - complete success; प्राप्नुयात् (prāpnuyāt) - may obtain; पराम् (parām) - highest;]
(Desired kinsmen union, without difficulty, free from disease; who this makes hear, learned one, complete success may obtain, highest.)
Desired union with kinsmen, freedom from difficulty and disease—whoever, being learned, causes this (text) to be heard may attain the highest accomplishment. (15-41-27)
स्वाध्याययुक्ताः पुरुषाः क्रियायुक्ताश्च भारत। अध्यात्मयोगयुक्ताश्च धृतिमन्तश्च मानवाः ॥ श्रुत्वा पर्व त्विदं नित्यमवाप्स्यन्ति परां गतिम् ॥१५-४१-२८॥
svādhyāyayuktāḥ puruṣāḥ kriyāyuktāś ca bhārata। adhyātmayogayuktāś ca dhṛtimantaś ca mānavāḥ ॥ śrutvā parva tv idaṃ nityam avāpsyanti parāṃ gatim ॥15-41-28॥
[स्वाध्याययुक्ताः (svādhyāyayuktāḥ) - engaged in self-study; पुरुषाः (puruṣāḥ) - men; क्रियायुक्ताः (kriyāyuktāḥ) - engaged in (religious) actions; च (ca) - and; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; अध्यात्मयोगयुक्ताः (adhyātmayogayuktāḥ) - practicing the yoga of self (spiritual discipline); च (ca) - and; धृतिमन्तः (dhṛtimantaḥ) - possessing steadfastness; च (ca) - and; मानवाः (mānavāḥ) - humans; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; पर्व (parva) - section; त्व (tv) - indeed; इदं (idaṃ) - this; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; अवाप्स्यन्ति (avāpsyanti) - will attain; परां (parām) - supreme; गतिम् (gatim) - goal;]
(Engaged in self-study men, engaged in actions and, O Bhārata, practicing the yoga of self and steadfast humans, having heard indeed this section always, will attain the supreme goal.)
O Bhārata, men engaged in self-study, in ritual actions, who practice spiritual discipline and are steadfast—such humans, upon hearing this section always, will attain the highest goal. (15-41-28)
