tato niśāyāṃ prāptāyāṃ kṛtasāyāhnikakriyāḥ। vyāsam abhyagaman sarve ye tatrāsan samāgatāḥ ॥15-40-1॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; निशायाम् (niśāyām) - in the night; प्राप्तायाम् (prāptāyām) - having arrived; कृत (kṛta) - having performed; सायाह्निक (sāyāhnika) - evening; क्रियाः (kriyāḥ) - ritual acts; व्यासम् (vyāsam) - (to) Vyāsa; अभ्यगमन् (abhyagaman) - approached; सर्वे (sarve) - all; ये (ye) - who; तत्र (tatra) - there; आसन् (āsan) - were; समागताः (samāgatāḥ) - assembled;]
(Then, in the night having arrived, having performed evening rituals, (they) all who were assembled there, approached Vyāsa.)
Then, when night had arrived and the evening rituals were performed, all those who were assembled there approached Vyāsa. (15-40-1)
धृतराष्ट्रस्तु धर्मात्मा पाण्डवैः सहितस्तदा। शुचिरेकमनाः सार्धमृषिभिस्तैरुपाविशत् ॥१५-४०-२॥
dhṛtarāṣṭras tu dharmātmā pāṇḍavaiḥ sahitas tadā। śucir ekamanāḥ sārdham ṛṣibhis tair upāviśat ॥15-40-2॥
[धृतराष्ट्रः (dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ) - Dhṛtarāṣṭra; तु (tu) - but; धर्मात्मा (dharmātmā) - virtuous-souled; पाण्डवैः (pāṇḍavaiḥ) - with the Pāṇḍavas; सहितः (sahitaḥ) - accompanied; तदा (tadā) - then; शुचिः (śuciḥ) - pure; एकमनाः (ekamanāḥ) - with single-mindedness; सार्धम् (sārdham) - together with; ऋषिभिः (ṛṣibhiḥ) - with the sages; तैः (taiḥ) - those; उपाविशत् (upāviśat) - sat down;]
(Dhṛtarāṣṭra but virtuous-souled with the Pāṇḍavas accompanied then, pure, with single-mindedness, together with those sages, sat down.)
But Dhṛtarāṣṭra, virtuous of soul, then sat down together with the Pāṇḍavas and the sages, with purity and single-mindedness. (15-40-2)
गान्धार्या सह नार्यस्तु सहिताः समुपाविशन्। पौरजानपदश्चापि जनः सर्वो यथावयः ॥१५-४०-३॥
gāndhāryā saha nāryas tu sahitāḥ samupāviśan। paurajanapadaś cāpi janaḥ sarvo yathāvayaḥ ॥15-40-3॥
[गान्धार्या (gāndhāryā) - with Gandhari; सह (saha) - together; नार्यस्तु (nāryas tu) - but the women; सहिताः (sahitāḥ) - joined; समुपाविशन् (samupāviśan) - sat down together; पौरजनपदश्चापि (paurajanapadaś cāpi) - and the townspeople and country people also; जनः (janaḥ) - people; सर्वो (sarvo) - all; यथावयः (yathāvayaḥ) - according to age;]
(With Gandhari, together the women joined and sat down together. And the townspeople and country people also, all people, according to age.)
The women, together with Gandhari, sat down as one group; and all the townspeople and country people, everyone, arranged themselves according to age. (15-40-3)
ततो व्यासो महातेजाः पुण्यं भागीरथीजलम्। अवगाह्याजुहावाथ सर्वाँल्लोकान्महामुनिः ॥१५-४०-४॥
tato vyāso mahātejāḥ puṇyaṃ bhāgīrathī-jalam। avagāhyājuhāvātha sarvāṃl lokān mahāmuniḥ ॥15-40-4॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; व्यासः (vyāsaḥ) - Vyāsa; महत्-तेजाः (mahat-tejāḥ) - of great splendor; पुण्यं (puṇyam) - holy; भागीरथी-जलं (bhāgīrathī-jalam) - water of the Bhagirathi (Ganga); अवगाह्य (avagāhya) - having bathed; अजुहाव (ajuhāva) - invoked; अथ (atha) - then; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all (accusative plural); लोकान् (lokān) - worlds (beings); महामुनिः (mahāmuniḥ) - the great sage;]
(Then Vyāsa, of great splendor, having bathed in the holy Bhagirathi waters, then invoked all worlds, the great sage.)
Then Vyāsa, the great sage of immense splendor, having bathed in the sacred waters of the Bhagirathi, invoked all beings of the worlds. (15-40-4)
पाण्डवानां च ये योधाः कौरवाणां च सर्वशः। राजानश्च महाभागा नानादेशनिवासिनः ॥१५-४०-५॥
pāṇḍavānāṁ ca ye yodhāḥ kauravāṇāṁ ca sarvaśaḥ। rājānaśca mahābhāgā nānādeśanivāsinaḥ ॥15-40-5॥
[पाण्डवानाम् (pāṇḍavānām) - of the Pāṇḍavas; च (ca) - and; ये (ye) - those who; योधाः (yodhāḥ) - warriors; कौरवाणाम् (kauravāṇām) - of the Kauravas; च (ca) - and; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - all; राजानः (rājānaḥ) - kings; च (ca) - and; महाभागाः (mahābhāgāḥ) - greatly fortunate; नाना-देश-निवासिनः (nānā-deśa-nivāsinaḥ) - dwelling in various regions;]
(And of the Pāṇḍavas those warriors, and of the Kauravas all; and kings, greatly fortunate, dwelling in various regions.)
Those warriors of the Pāṇḍavas and all the warriors of the Kauravas, along with the greatly fortunate kings residing in various lands. (15-40-5)
ततः सुतुमुलः शब्दो जलान्तर्जनमेजय। प्रादुरासीद्यथा पूर्वं कुरुपाण्डवसेनयोः ॥१५-४०-६॥
tataḥ sutumulaḥ śabdo jalāntarjanamejaya. prādurāsīdyathā pūrvaṃ kurupāṇḍavasenayoḥ ॥15-40-6॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; सुतुमुलः (sutumulaḥ) - very tumultuous; शब्दः (śabdaḥ) - sound; जलान्तः (jalāntaḥ) - within the water; जनमेजय (janamejaya) - O Janamejaya; प्रादुरासीद्यथा (prādurāsīdyathā) - arose as before; पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - formerly; कुरुपाण्डवसेनयोः (kurupāṇḍavasenayoḥ) - of the armies of Kuru and Pandava;]
(Then a very tumultuous sound within the water, O Janamejaya, arose as before, formerly, of the armies of Kuru and Pandava.)
Then, O Janamejaya, a very tumultuous sound arose within the water, just as it had before, from the armies of the Kurus and Pandavas. (15-40-6)
ततस्ते पार्थिवाः सर्वे भीष्मद्रोणपुरोगमाः। ससैन्याः सलिलात्तस्मात्समुत्तस्थुः सहस्रशः ॥१५-४०-७॥
tataste pārthivāḥ sarve bhīṣmadroṇapurogamāḥ। sasainyāḥ salilāttasmātsamuttasthuḥ sahasraśaḥ ॥15-40-7॥

(Then they, the kings, all, preceded by Bhīṣma and Droṇa, with armies, from the water, from that, rose up by thousands.)
Then all those kings, led by Bhīṣma and Droṇa, together with their armies, rose up from that water by the thousands. (15-40-7)
विराटद्रुपदौ चोभौ सपुत्रौ सहसैनिकौ। द्रौपदेयाश्च सौभद्रो राक्षसश्च घटोत्कचः ॥१५-४०-८॥
virāṭadrupadau cobhau saputrau sahasainikau। draupadeyāśca saubhadro rākṣasaśca ghaṭotkacaḥ ॥15-40-8॥

कर्णदुर्योधनौ चोभौ शकुनिश्च महारथः। दुःशासनादयश्चैव धार्तराष्ट्रा महारथाः ॥१५-४०-९॥
karṇa-duryodhanau cobhau śakuniś ca mahārathaḥ। duḥśāsanādayaś caiva dhārtarāṣṭrā mahārathāḥ॥15-40-9॥

(Karṇa and Duryodhana both, and Śakuni, a great chariot-warrior. Duḥśāsana and others indeed, the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, great chariot-warriors.)
Both Karṇa and Duryodhana, and Śakuni are great chariot-warriors. And Duḥśāsana and the others, the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, are also great chariot-warriors. (15-40-9)
जारासन्धिर्भगदत्तो जलसन्धश्च पार्थिवः। भूरिश्रवाः शलः शल्यो वृषसेनश्च सानुजः ॥१५-४०-१०॥
Jārāsandhir bhagadatto jalasandhaś ca pārthivaḥ। bhūriśravāḥ śalaḥ śalyo vṛṣasenaś ca sānujah ॥15-40-10॥

लक्ष्मणो राजपुत्रश्च धृष्टद्युम्नस्य चात्मजाः। शिखण्डिपुत्राः सर्वे च धृष्टकेतुश्च सानुजः ॥१५-४०-११॥
lakṣmaṇo rājaputraś ca dhṛṣṭadyumnasya cātmajāḥ| śikhaṇḍiputrāḥ sarve ca dhṛṣṭaketuś ca sānujaḥ ॥15-40-11॥

Acala, Vṛṣaka, Rākṣasa, Alāyudha, Bāhlīka, Somadatta, Cekitāna, and the king—all these were present. (15-40-12)
एते चान्ये च बहवो बहुत्वाद्ये न कीर्तिताः। सर्वे भासुरदेहास्ते समुत्तस्थुर्जलात्ततः ॥१५-४०-१३॥
ete cānye ca bahavo bahutvādyena kīrtitāḥ। sarve bhāsuradehās te samuttasthur jalāt tataḥ ॥15-40-13॥
[एते (ete) - these; च (ca) - and; अन्ये (anye) - others; च (ca) - and; बहवः (bahavaḥ) - many; बहुत्वात् (bahutvāt) - because of multitude; ये (ye) - who; न (na) - not; कीर्तिताः (kīrtitāḥ) - mentioned; सर्वे (sarve) - all; भासुरदेहाः (bhāsuradehāḥ) - having radiant bodies; ते (te) - they; समुत्तस्थुः (samuttasthuḥ) - arose together; जलात् (jalāt) - from the water; ततः (tataḥ) - then;]
(These and others and many (owing to multitude) who were not mentioned—all having radiant bodies—they arose together from the water then.)

यस्य वीरस्य यो वेषो यो ध्वजो यच्च वाहनम्। तेन तेन व्यदृश्यन्त समुपेता नराधिपाः ॥१५-४०-१४॥
yasya vīrasya yo veṣo yo dhvajo yac ca vāhanam। tena tena vyadṛśyanta samupetā narādhipāḥ॥15-40-14॥
[यस्य (yasya) - whose; वीरस्य (vīrasya) - of the hero; य: (yaḥ) - which; वेष: (veṣaḥ) - attire; य: (yaḥ) - which; ध्वज: (dhvajaḥ) - banner; यत् (yat) - which; च (ca) - and; वाहनम् (vāhanam) - vehicle; तेन तेन (tena tena) - with that one, with that one; व्यदृश्यन्त (vyadṛśyanta) - were seen; समुपेता: (samupetāḥ) - accompanied; नराधिपा: (narādhipāḥ) - kings;]
(Of which hero, which was the attire, which was the banner, and which was the vehicle, with each such (kind), the kings who had assembled were seen.)
The kings who had assembled appeared each with the attire, banner, and vehicle belonging to each hero. (15-40-14)
दिव्याम्बरधराः सर्वे सर्वे भ्राजिष्णुकुण्डलाः। निर्वैरा निरहङ्कारा विगतक्रोधमन्यवः ॥१५-४०-१५॥
divyāmbaradharāḥ sarve sarve bhrājiṣṇukuṇḍalāḥ। nirvairā nirahaṅkārā vigatakrodhamanyavaḥ ॥15-40-15॥
[दिव्याम्बरधराः (divyāmbaradharāḥ) - wearing divine garments; सर्वे (sarve) - all; सर्वे (sarve) - all; भ्राजिष्णुकुण्डलाः (bhrājiṣṇukuṇḍalāḥ) - having shining earrings; निर्वैरा (nirvairā) - without enmity; निरहङ्कारा (nirahaṅkārā) - without ego; विगतक्रोधमन्यवः (vigatakrodhamanyavaḥ) - devoid of anger and passion;]
(Wearing divine garments, all, all having shining earrings, without enmity, without ego, devoid of anger and passion.)
All are wearing divine garments, shining earrings, free from enmity, free from ego, and devoid of anger and passion. (15-40-15)
गन्धर्वैरुपगीयन्तः स्तूयमानाश्च बन्दिभिः। दिव्यमाल्याम्बरधरा वृताश्चाप्सरसां गणैः ॥१५-४०-१६॥
gandharvair upagīyantaḥ stūyamānāś ca bandibhiḥ। divya-mālyāmbara-dharā vṛtāś cāpsarasāṃ gaṇaiḥ॥15-40-16॥
[गन्धर्वैः (gandharvaiḥ) - by Gandharvas; उपगीयन्तः (upagīyantaḥ) - being sung (about); स्तूयमानाः (stūyamānāḥ) - being praised; च (ca) - and; बन्दिभिः (bandibhiḥ) - by bards; दिव्यमाल्याम्बरधरा (divya-mālyāmbara-dharā) - wearers of divine garlands and garments; वृताः (vṛtāḥ) - surrounded; च (ca) - and; अप्सरसां (apsarasām) - of Apsarases; गणैः (gaṇaiḥ) - by groups;]
(By Gandharvas being sung (about), being praised and by bards, wearers of divine garlands and garments, surrounded and by groups of Apsarases.)
Being sung by the Gandharvas, and praised by bards, adorned with divine garlands and garments, they were surrounded by groups of Apsarases. (15-40-16)
धृतराष्ट्रस्य च तदा दिव्यं चक्षुर्नराधिप। मुनिः सत्यवतीपुत्रः प्रीतः प्रादात्तपोबलात् ॥१५-४०-१७॥
dhṛtarāṣṭrasya ca tadā divyaṃ cakṣur narādhipa| muniḥ satyavatī-putraḥ prītaḥ prādāt tapo-balāt ॥15-40-17॥

दिव्यज्ञानबलोपेता गान्धारी च यशस्विनी। ददर्श पुत्रांस्तान्सर्वान्ये चान्येऽपि रणे हताः ॥१५-४०-१८॥
divyajñānabalopetā gāndhārī ca yaśasvinī। dadarśa putrāṃs tān sarvān ye ca anye 'pi raṇe hatāḥ॥15-40-18॥
[दिव्यज्ञानबलोपेता (divyajñānabalopetā) - endowed with divine knowledge and strength; गान्धारी (gāndhārī) - Gāndhārī; च (ca) - and; यशस्विनी (yaśasvinī) - illustrious; ददर्श (dadarśa) - saw; पुत्रान् (putrān) - sons; तान् (tān) - those; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; ये (ye) - who; च (ca) - and; अन्ये (anye) - others; अपि (api) - also; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; हताः (hatāḥ) - killed;]
(Endowed with divine knowledge and strength, Gāndhārī and illustrious saw sons those all and who and others also in battle killed.)
Gāndhārī, illustrious and endowed with divine knowledge and strength, saw all her sons and also other slain ones in the battle. (15-40-18)
तदद्भुतमचिन्त्यं च सुमहद्रोमहर्षणम्। विस्मितः स जनः सर्वो ददर्शानिमिषेक्षणः ॥१५-४०-१९॥
tad adbhutam acintyaṃ ca sumahat romaharṣaṇam | vismitaḥ sa janaḥ sarvaḥ dadarśa animiṣekṣaṇaḥ ॥15-40-19॥
[तत् (tat) - that; अद्भुतम् (adbhutam) - wonderful; अचिन्त्यम् (acintyam) - inconceivable; च (ca) - and; सुमहत् (sumahat) - very great; रोमहर्षणम् (romaharṣaṇam) - hair-raising; विस्मितः (vismitaḥ) - astonished; सः (saḥ) - he; जनः (janaḥ) - person; सर्वः (sarvaḥ) - all; ददर्श (dadarśa) - beheld; अनिमिषेक्षणः (animiṣekṣaṇaḥ) - with unblinking eyes;]
(That wonderful, inconceivable, and very great, hair-raising (thing), astonished, he, all people, beheld with unblinking eyes.)
Astonished, all those people beheld that wonderful, inconceivable, and very great, hair-raising sight with unblinking eyes. (15-40-19)
तदुत्सवमदोदग्रं हृष्टनारीनराकुलम्। ददृशे बलमायान्तं चित्रं पटगतं यथा ॥१५-४०-२०॥
tad-utsava-mada-udagraṃ hṛṣṭa-nārī-narākulam। dadṛśe balam āyāntam citraṃ paṭagataṃ yathā ॥15-40-20॥

(That army, exhilarated by festival excitement, crowded with joyful women and men, appeared approaching, wondrous, as if depicted on a cloth.)
That army, filled with the exuberance of the festival and crowded with delighted women and men, appeared approaching in a wondrous way, like an image painted on a cloth. (15-40-20)
धृतराष्ट्रस्तु तान्सर्वान्पश्यन्दिव्येन चक्षुषा। मुमुदे भरतश्रेष्ठ प्रसादात्तस्य वै मुनेः ॥१५-४०-२१॥
dhṛtarāṣṭras tu tān sarvān paśyan divyena cakṣuṣā। mumude bharata-śreṣṭha prasādāt tasya vai muneḥ ॥15-40-21॥
[धृतराष्ट्रः (dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ) - Dhritarashtra; तु (tu) - but; तान् (tān) - them; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; पश्यन् (paśyan) - seeing; दिव्येन (divyena) - with divine; चक्षुषा (cakṣuṣā) - eye; मुमुदे (mumude) - rejoiced; भरतश्रेष्ठ (bharata-śreṣṭha) - O best of the Bharatas; प्रसादात् (prasādāt) - by the favor; तस्य (tasya) - of him; वै (vai) - indeed; मुनेः (muneḥ) - of the sage;]
(Dhritarashtra but them all seeing with divine eye rejoiced O best of the Bharatas by the favor of him indeed of the sage.)
But Dhritarashtra, seeing all of them with divine sight, rejoiced, O best of the Bharatas, by the favor of that sage indeed. (15-40-21)
