नारद उवाच॥

Nārada said.
नासौ वृथाग्निना दग्धो यथा तत्र श्रुतं मया। वैचित्रवीर्यो नृपतिस्तत्ते वक्ष्यामि भारत ॥१५-४७-१॥
nāsau vṛthāgninā dagdho yathā tatra śrutaṃ mayā। vaicitravīryo nṛpatistatte vakṣyāmi bhārata ॥15-47-1॥
[न (na) - not; असौ (asau) - he; वृथाअग्निना (vṛthāgninā) - by useless fire; दग्धः (dagdhaḥ) - burnt; यथा (yathā) - as; तत्र (tatra) - there; श्रुतम् (śrutam) - heard; मया (mayā) - by me; वैचित्रवीर्यः (vaicitravīryaḥ) - Vicitravīrya; नृपतिः (nṛpatiḥ) - king; तत् (tat) - that; ते (te) - to you; वक्ष्यामि (vakṣyāmi) - I shall tell; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(Not he by useless fire burnt as there heard by me; Vicitravīrya the king that to you I shall tell, O Bhārata;)
He was not burnt by useless fire, as I have heard there; I shall tell you about that king Vicitravīrya, O Bhārata. (15-47-1)
वनं प्रविशता तेन वायुभक्षेण धीमता। अग्नयः कारयित्वेष्टिमुत्सृष्टा इति नः श्रुतम् ॥१५-४७-२॥
vanaṃ praviśatā tena vāyu-bhakṣeṇa dhīmatā। agnayaḥ kārayitvā iṣṭim utsṛṣṭā iti naḥ śrutam ॥15-47-2॥
[वनम् (vanam) - forest; प्रविशता (praviśatā) - by (him) entering; तेन (tena) - by him; वायुभक्षेण (vāyu-bhakṣeṇa) - living on air; धीमता (dhīmatā) - wise; अग्नयः (agnayaḥ) - the sacred fires; कारयित्वा (kārayitvā) - having caused to be performed; इष्टिम् (iṣṭim) - a sacrifice; उत्सृष्टाः (utsṛṣṭāḥ) - were abandoned; इति (iti) - thus; नः (naḥ) - by us; श्रुतम् (śrutam) - it is heard;]
(Forest by (him) entering by him living-on-air wise, the sacred fires having-caused-to-be-performed sacrifice were abandoned thus by us it is heard.)
We have heard that, when that wise one living on air entered the forest, the sacred fires, having had the sacrifice performed, were abandoned. (15-47-2)
याजकास्तु ततस्तस्य तानग्नीन्निर्जने वने। समुत्सृज्य यथाकामं जग्मुर्भरतसत्तम ॥१५-४७-३॥
yājakāstu tatas tasya tān agnīn nirjane vane। samutsṛjya yathākāmaṃ jagmur bharatasattama॥15-47-3॥
[याजकाः (yājakāḥ) - priests; तु (tu) - but; ततः (tataḥ) - then; तस्य (tasya) - his; तान् (tān) - those; अग्नीन् (agnīn) - fires; निर्जने (nirjane) - in a deserted; वने (vane) - forest; समुत्सृज्य (samutsṛjya) - having cast off; यथाकामम् (yathākāmam) - as they wished; जग्मुः (jagmuḥ) - they went; भरतसत्तम (bharatasattama) - O best of the Bharatas;]
(Priests but then his those fires in a deserted forest having cast off as they wished they went O best of the Bharatas.)
But the priests then left his fires in a deserted forest and went away as they wished, O best of the Bharatas. (15-47-3)
स विवृद्धस्तदा वह्निर्वने तस्मिन्नभूत्किल। तेन तद्वनमादीप्तमिति मे तापसाब्रुवन् ॥१५-४७-४॥
sa vivṛddhas tadā vahnir vane tasminn abhūt kila. tena tad vanam ādīptam iti me tāpasābruvan ॥15-47-4॥
[स (sa) - he; विवृद्धः (vivṛddhaḥ) - increased; तदा (tadā) - then; वह्निः (vahniḥ) - fire; वने (vane) - in the forest; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; अभूत् (abhūt) - arose; किल (kila) - indeed; तेन (tena) - by that; तत् (tat) - that; वनम् (vanam) - forest; आदीप्तम् (ādīptam) - was ignited; इति (iti) - thus; मे (me) - to me; तापसाः (tāpasāḥ) - ascetics; अब्रुवन् (abrūvan) - said;]
(He, increased, then fire, in the forest, in that, arose, indeed. By that, that forest was ignited, thus to me the ascetics said.)
That increased fire then arose in that forest, indeed. Because of that, the ascetics said to me that the forest was ignited. (15-47-4)
स राजा जाह्नवीकच्छे यथा ते कथितं मया। तेनाग्निना समायुक्तः स्वेनैव भरतर्षभ ॥१५-४७-५॥
sa rājā jāhnavī-kacche yathā te kathitaṁ mayā। tenāgninā samāyuktaḥ svenaiva bharatarṣabha ॥15-47-5॥
[स (sa) - he;| राजा (rājā) - king;| जाह्नवीकच्छे (jāhnavī-kacche) - on the bank of the Jāhnavī (Gaṅgā);| यथा (yathā) - as;| ते (te) - to you;| कथितं (kathitaṁ) - told;| मया (mayā) - by me;| तेनाग्निना (tenāgninā) - with that fire;| समायुक्तः (samāyuktaḥ) - united;| स्वेनैव (svenaiva) - by his own (fire) indeed;| भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of Bharatas;|;]
(He king on the bank of the Jāhnavī as to you told by me, with that fire united by his own indeed, O best of Bharatas.)
O best of Bharatas, that king, on the bank of the Jāhnavī, as I have told you, was himself united with that very fire. (15-47-5)
एवमावेदयामासुर्मुनयस्ते ममानघ। ये ते भागीरथीतीरे मया दृष्टा युधिष्ठिर ॥१५-४७-६॥
evam āvedayām āsur munayas te mama anagha. ye te bhāgīrathī tīre mayā dṛṣṭā yudhiṣṭhira ॥15-47-6॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; आवेदयाम् (āvedayām) - (we) reported; आसुर् (āsur) - (they) did; मुनयः (munayaḥ) - the sages; ते (te) - those; मम (mama) - to me; अनघ (anagha) - O sinless one; ये (ye) - who; ते (te) - those; भागीरथी-तीरे (bhāgīrathī-tīre) - on the bank of the Bhagirathi (Ganga); मया (mayā) - by me; दृष्टाः (dṛṣṭāḥ) - seen; युधिष्ठिर (yudhiṣṭhira) - Yudhishthira;]
(Thus the sages reported to me, O sinless one. Those whom you saw on the bank of the Bhagirathi (Ganga) by me, O Yudhishthira.)
Thus, the sages reported to me, O sinless one. O Yudhishthira, those whom you saw on the bank of the Bhagirathi River were shown to me. (15-47-6)
एवं स्वेनाग्निना राजा समायुक्तो महीपते। मा शोचिथास्त्वं नृपतिं गतः स परमां गतिम् ॥१५-४७-७॥
evaṃ svenāgninā rājā samāyukto mahīpate। mā śocithāstvaṃ nṛpatiṃ gataḥ sa paramāṃ gatim ॥15-47-7॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; स्वेन (svena) - by his own; अग्निना (agninā) - by fire; राजा (rājā) - king; समायुक्तः (samāyuktaḥ) - joined; महीपते (mahīpate) - O lord of the earth; मा (mā) - do not; शोचिथाः (śocithāḥ) - grieve; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; नृपतिं (nṛpatiṃ) - the king; गतः (gataḥ) - having gone; सः (saḥ) - he; परमां (paramāṃ) - supreme; गतिम् (gatim) - state;]
(Thus, by his own fire, the king joined, O lord of the earth, do not grieve, you; the king, having gone, he (has reached) the supreme state.)
Thus, by his own fire the king has departed, O lord of the earth. Do not grieve—you; the king has gone to the supreme state. (15-47-7)
गुरुशुश्रूषया चैव जननी तव पाण्डव। प्राप्ता सुमहतीं सिद्धिमिति मे नात्र संशयः ॥१५-४७-८॥
guruśuśrūṣayā caiva jananī tava pāṇḍava। prāptā sumahatīṁ siddhimiti me nātra saṁśayaḥ ॥15-47-8॥
[गुरुशुश्रूषया (guruśuśrūṣayā) - by service to the teacher; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; जननी (jananī) - the mother; तव (tava) - your; पाण्डव (pāṇḍava) - O Pāṇḍava; प्राप्ता (prāptā) - has obtained; सुमहतीं (sumahatīṁ) - very great; सिद्धिम् (siddhim) - success; इति (iti) - thus; मे (me) - to me; न (na) - not; अत्र (atra) - here; संशयः (saṁśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(By service to the teacher indeed, your mother, O Pāṇḍava, has obtained very great success—thus, to me here, there is not doubt.)
By service to the teacher, your mother, O Pāṇḍava, has surely attained very great success—of this I have no doubt. (15-47-8)
कर्तुमर्हसि कौरव्य तेषां त्वमुदकक्रियाम्। भ्रातृभिः सहितः सर्वैरेतदत्र विधीयताम् ॥१५-४७-९॥
kartum arhasi kauravya teṣāṃ tvam udakakriyām. bhrātṛbhiḥ sahitaḥ sarvaiḥ etad atra vidhīyatām ॥15-47-9॥
[कर्तुम् (kartum) - to do; to perform; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought; you are worthy; कौरव्य (kauravya) - O descendant of Kuru; तेषाम् (teṣām) - for them; त्वम् (tvam) - you; उदकक्रियाम् (udakakriyām) - water-rite; oblation with water; भ्रातृभिः (bhrātṛbhiḥ) - with (your) brothers; सहितः (sahitaḥ) - together; accompanied; सर्वैः (sarvaiḥ) - all; एतत् (etat) - this; अत्र (atra) - here; विधीयताम् (vidhīyatām) - let it be performed; let it be done;]
(To perform you ought, O descendant of Kuru, for them you water-rite. With brothers together, all, this here let it be done.)
O descendant of Kuru, you ought to perform the water-rite for them. Together with all your brothers, let this be done here. (15-47-9)

ततः स पृथिवीपालः पाण्डवानां धुरन्धरः। निर्ययौ सह सोदर्यैः सदारो भरतर्षभ ॥१५-४७-१०॥
tataḥ sa pṛthivī-pālaḥ pāṇḍavānāṃ dhurandharaḥ। niryayau saha sodaryaiḥ sadāraḥ bharatarṣabha॥15-47-10॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; स (sa) - he; पृथिवीपालः (pṛthivī-pālaḥ) - king (protector of the earth); पाण्डवानां (pāṇḍavānāṃ) - of the Pāṇḍavas; धुरन्धरः (dhurandharaḥ) - chief; निर्ययौ (niryayau) - departed; सह (saha) - with; सौदर्यैः (sodaryaiḥ) - by own (full) brothers; सदारः (sadāraḥ) - with wife; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of the Bharatas;]
(Then he, the chief king of the Pāṇḍavas, departed with his own brothers and with wife, O best of the Bharatas.)
Then that king, chief among the Pāṇḍavas, departed together with his full brothers and his wife, O best of the Bharatas. (15-47-10)
पौरजानपदाश्चैव राजभक्तिपुरस्कृताः। गङ्गां प्रजग्मुरभितो वाससैकेन संवृताः ॥१५-४७-११॥
paurajanapadāś caiva rājabhaktipuraskṛtāḥ। gaṅgāṃ prajagmur abhito vāsasaikena saṃvṛtāḥ ॥15-47-11॥
[पौरजनपदाः (paurajanapadāḥ) - inhabitants of towns and country; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; राजभक्तिपुरस्कृताः (rājabhaktipuraskṛtāḥ) - led (puraskṛtāḥ) by loyalty to the king (rājabhakti); गङ्गाम् (gaṅgām) - to the Gaṅgā (the river); प्रजग्मुः (prajagmuḥ) - they went; अभितः (abhitaḥ) - from all sides; वाससा (vāsasā) - with one cloth; एकेन (eikena) - single; संवृताः (saṃvṛtāḥ) - having covered (themselves);]
(Inhabitants of towns and country indeed, led by loyalty to the king, to the Gaṅgā they went from all sides, having covered themselves with a single cloth.)
The inhabitants of the towns and countryside, led by loyalty to the king, went from all directions to the Gaṅgā, clothed in a single garment. (15-47-11)
ततोऽवगाह्य सलिलं सर्वे ते कुरुपुङ्गवाः। युयुत्सुमग्रतः कृत्वा ददुस्तोयं महात्मने ॥१५-४७-१२॥
tato’vagāhya salilaṃ sarve te kurupuṅgavāḥ। yuyutsum agrataḥ kṛtvā dadus toyaṃ mahātmane॥15-47-12॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अवगाह्य (avagāhya) - having entered; सलिलम् (salilam) - water; सर्वे (sarve) - all; ते (te) - they; कुरुपुङ्गवाः (kurupuṅgavāḥ) - the chiefs of the Kuru (lineage); युयुत्सुम् (yuyutsum) - desiring to fight; अग्रतः (agrataḥ) - in front; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having placed; ददुः (daduḥ) - gave; तोयम् (toyam) - water; महात्मने (mahātmane) - to the great-souled (one);]
(Then having entered the water, all those chiefs of the Kurus, having placed the desirer of battle in front, gave water to the great-souled one.)
Then, after entering the water, all those chiefs of the Kurus, with the one who desired battle positioned in front, offered water to the great-souled one. (15-47-12)
गान्धार्याश्च पृथायाश्च विधिवन्नामगोत्रतः। शौचं निवर्तयन्तस्ते तत्रोषुर्नगराद्बहिः ॥१५-४७-१३॥
gāndhāryāś ca pṛthāyāś ca vidhivan nāmagotrataḥ। śaucaṃ nivartayantas te tatroṣur nagarād bahiḥ ॥15-47-13॥
[गान्धार्याः (gāndhāryāḥ) - of Gāndhārī; च (ca) - and; पृथायाः (pṛthāyāḥ) - of Pṛthā (Kuntī); च (ca) - and; विधिवत् (vidhivat) - according to procedure; नामगोत्रतः (nāmagotrataḥ) - by name and lineage; शौचं (śaucaṃ) - purification; निवर्तयन्तः (nivartayantaḥ) - performing (ending, observing, or discharging); ते (te) - they; तत्र (tatra) - there; उषुः (uṣuḥ) - dwelt; नगरात् (nagarāt) - from the city; बहिः (bahiḥ) - outside;]
(Of Gāndhārī and of Pṛthā, and, according to procedure, by name and lineage, performing purification, they there dwelt outside from the city.)
Gāndhārī and Pṛthā, observing purification according to proper procedure with due regard to name and lineage, stayed there outside the city. (15-47-13)
प्रेषयामास स नरान्विधिज्ञानाप्तकारिणः। गङ्गाद्वारं कुरुश्रेष्ठो यत्र दग्धोऽभवन्नृपः ॥१५-४७-१४॥
preṣayāmāsa sa narān-vidhijñān-āpta-kāriṇaḥ। gaṅgādvāraṃ kuruśreṣṭho yatra dagdho'bhavannṛpaḥ॥15-47-14॥
[प्रेषयामास (preṣayāmāsa) - he sent; स (sa) - he; नरान् (narān) - men; विधिज्ञानाप्तकारिणः (vidhijñān-āpta-kāriṇaḥ) - accomplishers possessing knowledge of proper rites; गङ्गाद्वारम् (gaṅgādvāram) - Gaṅgādvāra (Haridwar); कुरुश्रेष्ठः (kuruśreṣṭhaḥ) - the best of the Kurus; यत्र (yatra) - where; दग्धः (dagdhaḥ) - burned (cremated); अभवत् (abhavat) - became; नृपः (nṛpaḥ) - the king;]
(He sent men accomplished and possessing knowledge of proper rites to Gaṅgādvāra, O best of the Kurus, where the king had been cremated.)
He, O best of the Kurus, sent men expert in the proper rites to Gaṅgādvāra, where the king had been cremated. (15-47-14)
तत्रैव तेषां कुल्यानि गङ्गाद्वारेऽन्वशात्तदा। कर्तव्यानीति पुरुषान्दत्तदेयान्महीपतिः ॥१५-४७-१५॥
tatraiva teṣāṃ kulyāni gaṅgādvāre'nvaśāttadā। kartavyānīti puruṣāndattadeyān mahīpatiḥ ॥15-47-15॥
[तत्रैव (tatraiva) - there itself; तेषां (teṣāṃ) - of them; कुल्यानि (kulyāni) - water channels; गङ्गाद्वारे (gaṅgādvāre) - at Gaṅgādvāra (the opening or ford of Gaṅgā river); अन्वशात् (anvaśāt) - he caused (them) to be dug; तदा (tadā) - at that time; कर्तव्यानि (kartavyāni) - to be done; इति (iti) - thus; पुरुषान् (puruṣān) - men; दत्तदेयान् (dattadeyān) - (ones) who were to be given gifts; महीपतिः (mahīpatiḥ) - the king;]
(There itself, of them, water channels, at Gaṅgādvāra, he caused to be dug, at that time; to be done, thus, men, the gift-receivers, the king.)
At that very place, the king caused water channels for them to be dug at Gaṅgādvāra at that time, and commanded that men worthy of receiving gifts should be provided for this purpose. (15-47-15)
द्वादशेऽहनि तेभ्यः स कृतशौचो नराधिपः। ददौ श्राद्धानि विधिवद्दक्षिणावन्ति पाण्डवः ॥१५-४७-१६॥
dvādaśe'hani tebhyaḥ sa kṛtaśauco narādhipaḥ। dadau śrāddhāni vidhivad dakṣiṇāvanti pāṇḍavaḥ ॥15-47-16॥
[द्वादशेऽहनि (dvādaśe'hani) - on the twelfth day; day; तेभ्यः (tebhyaḥ) - to them; स (sa) - he; कृतशौचः (kṛtaśaucaḥ) - having performed purification; नराधिपः (narādhipaḥ) - the lord of men; ददौ (dadau) - gave; श्राद्धानि (śrāddhāni) - rites for the ancestors; विधिवत् (vidhivat) - according to rule; दक्षिणावन्ति (dakṣiṇāvanti) - accompanied by gifts; पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - the son of Pāṇḍu;]
(On the twelfth day, to them, he, having performed purification, the lord of men, gave rites for the ancestors according to rule, accompanied by gifts, the son of Pāṇḍu.)
On the twelfth day, the son of Pāṇḍu, having performed purification, gave to them the ancestral rites according to rule, accompanied by gifts, as the lord of men. (15-47-16)
धृतराष्ट्रं समुद्दिश्य ददौ स पृथिवीपतिः। सुवर्णं रजतं गाश्च शय्याश्च सुमहाधनाः ॥१५-४७-१७॥
dhṛtarāṣṭraṁ samuddiśya dadau sa pṛthivīpatiḥ। suvarṇaṁ rajataṁ gāś ca śayyāś ca sumahādhanāḥ ॥15-47-17॥
[धृतराष्ट्रं (dhṛtarāṣṭram) - to Dhṛtarāṣṭra; समुद्दिश्य (samuddiśya) - having appointed; having addressed; ददौ (dadau) - he gave; स (sa) - he; पृथिवीपतिः (pṛthivīpatiḥ) - the king; lord of the earth; सुवर्णं (suvarṇam) - gold; रजतं (rajatam) - silver; गाः (gāḥ) - cows; च (ca) - and; शय्याः (śayyāḥ) - beds; couches; च (ca) - and; सुमहाधनाः (sumahādhanāḥ) - of very great wealth;]
(To Dhṛtarāṣṭra, having appointed, he gave, he, the king; gold, silver, cows and beds and of very great wealth.)
Addressing Dhṛtarāṣṭra, the king gave gold, silver, cows, and beds of very great value. (15-47-17)
गान्धार्याश्चैव तेजस्वी पृथायाश्च पृथक्पृथक्। सङ्कीर्त्य नामनी राजा ददौ दानमनुत्तमम् ॥१५-४७-१८॥
gāndhāryāś caiva tejasvī pṛthāyāś ca pṛthak pṛthak। saṅkīrtya nāmani rājā dadau dānam anuttamam॥15-47-18॥
[गान्धार्याः (gāndhāryāḥ) - of Gandhari; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; तेजस्वी (tejasvī) - the splendid (one); पृथायाः (pṛthāyāḥ) - of Pritha; च (ca) - and; पृथक् पृथक् (pṛthak pṛthak) - separately, individually; सङ्कीर्त्य (saṅkīrtya) - having recited; नामनि (nāmani) - the names; राजा (rājā) - the king; ददौ (dadau) - gave; दानम् (dānam) - a gift; अनुत्तमम् (anuttamam) - unsurpassed;]
(Of Gandhari and indeed the splendid Pritha also, separately, having recited the names, the king gave a gift unsurpassed.)
The splendid king, having recited separately the names of Gandhari and Pritha, gave unsurpassed gifts. (15-47-18)
यो यदिच्छति यावच्च तावत्स लभते द्विजः। शयनं भोजनं यानं मणिरत्नमथो धनम् ॥१५-४७-१९॥
yo yad icchati yāvat ca tāvat sa labhate dvijaḥ| śayanaṃ bhojanaṃ yānaṃ maṇiratnam atho dhanam ॥15-47-19॥
[यो (yo) - who; यत् (yat) - what; इच्छति (icchati) - desires; यावत् (yāvat) - as much as; च (ca) - and; तावत् (tāvat) - so much; सः (sa) - he; लभते (labhate) - obtains; द्विजः (dvijaḥ) - the twice-born (brāhmaṇa, etc.); शयनम् (śayanam) - bed; भोजनम् (bhojanam) - food; यानम् (yānam) - vehicle; मणिरत्नम् (maṇiratnam) - jewel and gem; अथ (atho) - and also; धनम् (dhanam) - wealth;]
(Who what desires, as much and so much he obtains, the twice-born; bed, food, vehicle, jewel and gem, and also wealth.)
The twice-born (brāhmaṇa) obtains whatever and however much he desires—bed, food, vehicle, jewels, and also wealth. (15-47-19)
यानमाच्छादनं भोगान्दासीश्च परिचारिकाः। ददौ राजा समुद्दिश्य तयोर्मात्रोर्महीपतिः ॥१५-४७-२०॥
yānam-ācchādanaṃ bhogān dāsīś ca paricārikāḥ। dadau rājā samuddiśya tayor mātroḥ mahīpatiḥ ॥15-47-20॥
[यानम् (yānam) - vehicle; आच्छादनम् (ācchādanam) - covering; भोगान् (bhogān) - enjoyments; दासीः (dāsīḥ) - female servants; च (ca) - and; परिचारिकाः (paricārikāḥ) - attendants; ददौ (dadau) - gave; राजा (rājā) - the king; समुद्धिश्य (samuddiśya) - having designated; तयोः (tayor) - of those two; मात्रोः (mātroḥ) - mothers; महीपतिः (mahīpatiḥ) - the lord of the earth;]
(Vehicle, covering, enjoyments, female servants and attendants the king gave, having designated, of those two mothers, the lord of the earth.)
The king, the lord of the earth, gave vehicles, coverings, enjoyments, female servants and attendants, having designated them for the two mothers. (15-47-20)
ततः स पृथिवीपालो दत्त्वा श्राद्धान्यनेकशः। प्रविवेश पुनर्धीमान्नगरं वारणाह्वयम् ॥१५-४७-२१॥
tataḥ sa pṛthivī-pālo dattvā śrāddhāni anekaśaḥ। praviveśa punaḥ dhīmān nagaraṃ vāraṇāhvayam॥15-47-21॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; स (sa) - he; पृथिवीपालः (pṛthivī-pālaḥ) - guardian of the earth; दत्त्वा (dattvā) - having given; श्राद्धानि (śrāddhāni) - funeral rites; अनेकशः (anekaśaḥ) - repeatedly; प्रविवेश (praviveśa) - he entered; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; धीमान् (dhīmān) - wise; नगरम् (nagaraṃ) - city; वारणाह्वयम् (vāraṇāhvayam) - Varanasi (named for elephants; epithet for Varanasi);]
(Then he, the guardian of the earth, having given funeral rites repeatedly, again the wise entered the city called Varanasi.)
Then the wise king, having performed many funeral rites, once again entered the city of Varanasi. (15-47-21)
ते चापि राजवचनात्पुरुषा ये गताभवन्। सङ्कल्प्य तेषां कुल्यानि पुनः प्रत्यागमंस्ततः ॥१५-४७-२२॥
te cāpi rājavacanāt puruṣā ye gatābhavan। saṅkalpya teṣāṃ kulyāni punaḥ pratyāgamaṃs tataḥ ॥15-47-22॥
[ते (te) - they; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; राजवचनात् (rājavacanāt) - from the king's command; पुरुषाः (puruṣāḥ) - men; ये (ye) - who; गताः (gatāḥ) - went; अभवन् (abhavan) - became; सङ्कल्य (saṅkalpya) - having determined; तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; कुल्यानि (kulyāni) - families; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; प्रत्यागमम् (pratyāgamam) - return; ततः (tataḥ) - then;]
(They and also from the king's command men who went became; having determined of them the families again return then.)
Then those men who had gone on the king's command, having identified their families, returned again. (15-47-22)
माल्यैर्गन्धैश्च विविधैः पूजयित्वा यथाविधि। कुल्यानि तेषां संयोज्य तदाचख्युर्महीपतेः ॥१५-४७-२३॥
mālyair gandhaiś ca vividhaiḥ pūjayitvā yathāvidhi. kulyāni teṣāṃ saṃyojya tad ācakhyur mahīpateḥ ॥15-47-23॥
[माल्यैः (mālyaiḥ) - with garlands; गन्धैः (gandhaiḥ) - with scents; च (ca) - and; विविधैः (vividhaiḥ) - various; पूजयित्वा (pūjayitvā) - having worshipped; यथाविधि (yathāvidhi) - according to rule; कुल्यानि (kulyāni) - water-channels; तेषां (teṣāṃ) - their; संयोज्य (saṃyojya) - having connected; तत् (tat) - that; आचख्यु: (ācakhyuḥ) - they informed; महीपतेः (mahīpateḥ) - to the king;]
(With garlands, scents, and various (offerings), having worshipped according to rule, water-channels of theirs having connected, that they informed to the king.)
Having worshipped with garlands, scents, and various offerings according to the prescribed rule, and having connected their water-channels, they informed the king of this. (15-47-23)
समाश्वास्य च राजानं धर्मात्मानं युधिष्ठिरम्। नारदोऽप्यगमद्राजन्परमर्षिर्यथेप्सितम् ॥१५-४७-२४॥
samāśvāsya ca rājānaṃ dharmātmānaṃ yudhiṣṭhiram। nārado'pyagamad rājan paramarṣir yathepsitam ॥15-47-24॥
[समाश्वास्य (samāśvāsya) - having consoled; च (ca) - and; राजानं (rājānam) - the (king); धर्मात्मानं (dharmātmānam) - righteous-souled; युधिष्ठिरम् (yudhiṣṭhiram) - Yudhishthira; नारदः (nāradaḥ) - Narada; अपि (api) - also; अगमत् (agamat) - departed; राजन् (rājan) - O king; परमर्षिः (paramarṣiḥ) - the supreme ṛṣi; यथ-इप्सितम् (yatha-ipsitam) - as (he) desired;]
(Having consoled and the king, righteous-souled Yudhishthira, Narada also departed, O king, the supreme ṛṣi, as (he) desired.)
And having consoled the righteous-souled King Yudhishthira, O king, the supreme sage Narada also departed as he wished. (15-47-24)
एवं वर्षाण्यतीतानि धृतराष्ट्रस्य धीमतः। वनवासे तदा त्रीणि नगरे दश पञ्च च ॥१५-४७-२५॥
evaṃ varṣāṇy atītāni dhṛtarāṣṭrasya dhīmataḥ। vanavāse tadā trīṇi nagare daśa pañca ca ॥15-47-25॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; वर्षाणि (varṣāṇi) - years; अतीतानि (atītāni) - passed; धृतराष्ट्रस्य (dhṛtarāṣṭrasya) - of Dhritarashtra; धीमतः (dhīmataḥ) - wise; वनवासे (vanavāse) - in the forest dwelling; तदा (tadā) - then; त्रीणि (trīṇi) - three; नगरे (nagare) - in the city; दश (daśa) - ten; पञ्च (pañca) - five; च (ca) - and;]
(Thus years passed of Dhritarashtra, the wise; in forest dwelling then three, in the city ten and five.)
Thus, the years passed for the wise Dhritarashtra: three in forest dwelling, and fifteen (ten and five) in the city. (15-47-25)
हतपुत्रस्य सङ्ग्रामे दानानि ददतः सदा। ज्ञातिसम्बन्धिमित्राणां भ्रातॄणां स्वजनस्य च ॥१५-४७-२६॥
hataputrasya saṅgrāme dānāni dadataḥ sadā. jñātisambandhimitrāṇāṃ bhrātṝṇāṃ svajanasya ca ॥15-47-26॥

युधिष्ठिरस्तु नृपतिर्नातिप्रीतमनास्तदा। धारयामास तद्राज्यं निहतज्ञातिबान्धवः ॥१५-४७-२७॥
yudhiṣṭhiras tu nṛpatir nātiprītamanās tadā। dhārayām āsa tad rājyaṃ nihatajñātibāndhavaḥ॥15-47-27॥
