Yudhiṣṭhira said.
तथा महात्मनस्तस्य तपस्युग्रे च वर्ततः। अनाथस्येव निधनं तिष्ठत्स्वस्मासु बन्धुषु ॥१५-४६-१॥
tathā mahātmanaḥ tasya tapasī ugre ca vartataḥ। anāthasya eva nidhanaṁ tiṣṭhat svasmāsu bandhuṣu॥15-46-1॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - of the great-souled one; तस्य (tasya) - his; तपस्युग्रे (tapasi ugre) - in the severe austerity; च (ca) - and; वर्ततः (vartataḥ) - being engaged; अनाथस्येव (anāthasya eva) - just like of one who is without protector; निधनम् (nidhanam) - death; तिष्ठत् (tiṣṭhat) - standing; स्वस्मासु (svasmāsu) - among ourselves; बन्धुषु (bandhuṣu) - among the relatives;]
(Thus, of the great-souled one, his being engaged in severe austerity, and just like the death of one bereft of protector stands among ourselves, among the relatives.)
Thus, while that great-souled one was engaged in severe austerities, death stood among us relatives just as it does for one who has no protector. (15-46-1)
दुर्विज्ञेया हि गतयः पुरुषाणां मता मम। यत्र वैचित्रवीर्योऽसौ दग्ध एवं दवाग्निना ॥१५-४६-२॥
durvijñeyā hi gatayaḥ puruṣāṇāṃ matā mama. yatra vaicitratvavīryo'sau dagdha evaṃ davāgninā ॥15-46-2॥
[दुर्विज्ञेया (durvijñeyā) - difficult to be comprehended; हि (hi) - indeed; गतयः (gatayaḥ) - paths; पुरुषाणां (puruṣāṇām) - of men; मता (matā) - regarded; मम (mama) - by me; यत्र (yatra) - where; वैचित्रवीर्यः (vaicitratvavīryaḥ) - Vichitravirya; असौ (asau) - he; दग्ध (dagdha) - burned; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; दवाग्निना (davāgninā) - by a forest fire;]
(Difficult to be comprehended indeed the paths of men regarded by me. Where Vichitravirya he burned thus by a forest fire.)
Indeed, I consider the paths of men to be difficult to understand, for there, Vichitravirya was burned in this way by a forest fire. (15-46-2)
यस्य पुत्रशतं श्रीमदभवद्बाहुशालिनः। नागायुतबलो राजा स दग्धो हि दवाग्निना ॥१५-४६-३॥
yasya putraśataṃ śrīmadabhavadbāhuśālinaḥ। nāgāyutabalo rājā sa dagdho hi davāgninā॥15-46-3॥
[यस्य (yasya) - whose; पुत्रशतम् (putraśatam) - hundred sons; श्रीमद्-अभवत्-बाहुशालिनः (śrīmad-abhavat-bāhuśālinaḥ) - prosperous (śrīmad), became (abhavat), endowed with strong arms (bāhuśālinaḥ); नागायुतबलः (nágāyutabalaḥ) - having the strength of ten thousand elephants; राजा (rājā) - king; स (sa) - he; दग्धः (dagdhaḥ) - burned; हि (hi) - indeed; दवाग्निना (davāgninā) - by forest fire;]
(Whose hundred sons, prosperous, became possessed of strong arms, having the strength of ten thousand elephants, the king—he indeed was burned by a forest fire.)
The king, who had a hundred sons and was prosperous, endowed with strong arms and the strength of ten thousand elephants, was indeed burned by a forest fire. (15-46-3)
यं पुरा पर्यवीजन्त तालवृन्तैर्वरस्त्रियः। तं गृध्राः पर्यवीजन्त दावाग्निपरिकालितम् ॥१५-४६-४॥
yaṃ purā paryavījan̄ta tālavṛntair varastriyaḥ। taṃ gṛdhrāḥ paryavījan̄ta dāvāgniparikālitam ॥15-46-4॥
[यं (yaṃ) - whom; पुरा (purā) - formerly; पर्यवीजन्त (paryavījan̄ta) - fanned (him); तालवृन्तैः (tālavṛntaiḥ) - with palm-leaf fans; वरस्त्रियः (varastriyaḥ) - noble women; तं (taṃ) - him; गृध्राः (gṛdhrāḥ) - vultures; पर्यवीजन्त (paryavījan̄ta) - fanned (him); दावाग्निपरिकालितम् (dāvāgni-parikālitam) - burnt by the forest fire;]
(Whom formerly noble women fanned with palm-leaf fans, him vultures fanned, burned by forest fire.)
The one whom noble women once fanned with palm-leaf fans, vultures now fan, his body burned by the forest fire. (15-46-4)
सूतमागधसङ्घैश्च शयानो यः प्रबोध्यते। धरण्यां स नृपः शेते पापस्य मम कर्मभिः ॥१५-४६-५॥
sūtamāgadhasaṅghaiś ca śayāno yaḥ prabodhyate। dharaṇyāṃ sa nṛpaḥ śete pāpasya mama karmabhiḥ ॥15-46-5॥
[सूतमागधसङ्घैः (sūtamāgadhasaṅghaiḥ) - by groups of charioteers and bards; च (ca) - and; शयानः (śayānaḥ) - lying (down); यः (yaḥ) - who; प्रबोध्यते (prabodhyate) - is awakened; धरण्यां (dharaṇyām) - on the earth; स (sa) - he; नृपः (nṛpaḥ) - king; शेते (śete) - lies; पापस्य (pāpasya) - of evil; मम (mama) - my; कर्मभिः (karmabhiḥ) - by actions;]
(By groups of charioteers and bards and lying down, who is awakened; on the earth, he, the king, lies by (the result of) my evil actions.)
He, the king, who is awakened by groups of charioteers and bards while lying down, now lies on the earth due to my evil actions. (15-46-5)
न तु शोचामि गान्धारीं हतपुत्रां यशस्विनीम्। पतिलोकमनुप्राप्तां तथा भर्तृव्रते स्थिताम् ॥१५-४६-६॥
na tu śocāmi gāndhārīṃ hataputrāṃ yaśasvinīm। patilokam anuprāptāṃ tathā bhartṛvrate sthitām॥15-46-6॥
[न (na) - not; तु (tu) - but; शोचामि (śocāmi) - I grieve; गान्धारीं (gāndhārīṃ) - Gandhari; हतपुत्रां (hataputrām) - whose son is slain; यशस्विनीम् (yaśasvinīm) - illustrious; पतिलोकम् (patilokam) - to the world of her husband; अनुप्राप्ताम् (anuprāptām) - attained; तथा (tathā) - also; भर्तृव्रते (bhartṛvrate) - in the vow to her husband; स्थिताम् (sthitām) - steadfast;]
(Not but I grieve Gandhari, whose son is slain, illustrious, to the world of her husband attained, also in the vow to her husband steadfast.)
But I do not grieve for Gandhari, the illustrious one, whose son has been slain, who has attained the world of her husband, and who has remained steadfast in her vow to her husband. (15-46-6)
पृथामेव तु शोचामि या पुत्रैश्वर्यमृद्धिमत्। उत्सृज्य सुमहद्दीप्तं वनवासमरोचयत् ॥१५-४६-७॥
pṛthām eva tu śocāmi yā putra-aiśvaryam ṛddhimat | utsṛjya su-mahad-dīptam vanavāsam arocayat ॥15-46-7॥
[पृथाम् (pṛthām) - Pṛthā; (Kuntī; a proper noun;) एव (eva) - only; indeed; तु (tu) - but; शोचामि (śocāmi) - I grieve; या (yā) - who; पुत्रैश्वर्यम् (putra-aiśvaryam) - son-prosperity; sovereignty through her sons; ऋद्धिमत् (ṛddhimat) - abundant; endowed with prosperity; उत्सृज्य (utsṛjya) - having abandoned; सुमहद्दीप्तम् (su-mahad-dīptam) - very great and splendid; वनवासम् (vanavāsam) - forest-dwelling; life in the forest; अरोजयत् (arocayat) - she chose; (she found agreeable;) ॥१५-४६-७॥ (॥15-46-7॥) - ;]
(But I grieve only for Pṛthā, who, having abandoned prosperity endowed with sovereignty through her sons, and very great and splendid (status), chose forest-dwelling as agreeable.)
But I grieve for Pṛthā alone, who, giving up the great and splendid prosperity of her sons' sovereignty, chose a life in the forest. (15-46-7)
धिग्राज्यमिदमस्माकं धिग्बलं धिक्पराक्रमम्। क्षत्रधर्मं च धिग्यस्मान्मृता जीवामहे वयम् ॥१५-४६-८॥
dhig-rājyam idam asmākaṃ dhig-balaṃ dhik-parākramaṃ। kṣatra-dharmaṃ ca dhig-yasmān mṛtā jīvāmahe vayam॥15-46-8॥
[धिक् (dhik) - condemned; shame upon; राज्यम् (rājyam) - kingdom; इदम् (idam) - this; अस्माकं (asmākaṃ) - our; धिक् (dhik) - condemned; shame upon; बलं (balaṃ) - strength; धिक् (dhik) - condemned; shame upon; पराक्रमम् (parākramaṃ) - valor; क्षत्रधर्मं (kṣatra-dharmaṃ) - the kṣatriya-duty; च (ca) - and; धिक् (dhik) - condemned; shame upon; यत् (yat) - that; अस्मान् (asmān) - us; मृताः (mṛtāḥ) - dead; जीवामहे (jīvāmahe) - we live; वयम् (vayam) - we;]
(Condemned this kingdom of ours, condemned strength, condemned valor. The kṣatriya duty and condemned us that, dead, we live, we.)
Shame upon this kingdom of ours, shame upon strength, shame upon valor. Shame upon our kṣatriya duty and upon us, that we continue to live when those (others) have died. (15-46-8)
सुसूक्ष्मा किल कालस्य गतिर्द्विजवरोत्तम। यत्समुत्सृज्य राज्यं सा वनवासमरोचयत् ॥१५-४६-९॥
susūkṣmā kila kālasya gatir dvijavarottama. yat samutsṛjya rājyaṃ sā vanavāsam arocayat ॥15-46-9॥
[सुसूक्ष्मा (susūkṣmā) - very subtle; किल (kila) - indeed; कालस्य (kālasya) - of time; गतिः (gatiḥ) - course; द्विजवरोत्तम (dvijavarottama) - O best of excellent twice-born; यत् (yat) - which; समुत्सृज्य (samutsṛjya) - abandoning completely; राज्यम् (rājyaṃ) - kingdom; सा (sā) - she; वनवासम् (vanavāsam) - forest-dwelling; अरोचयत् (arocayat) - chose;]
(Very subtle indeed the course of time, O best of the excellent twice-born; which, having completely abandoned the kingdom, she chose forest-dwelling.)
O best of excellent twice-born, the course of time is indeed very subtle; for she, having completely abandoned the kingdom, chose life in the forest. (15-46-9)
युधिष्ठिरस्य जननी भीमस्य विजयस्य च। अनाथवत्कथं दग्धा इति मुह्यामि चिन्तयन् ॥१५-४६-१०॥
yudhiṣṭhirasya jananī bhīmasya vijayasya ca। anāthavat-kathaṁ dagdhā iti muhyāmi cintayan॥15-46-10॥
[युधिष्ठिरस्य (yudhiṣṭhirasya) - of Yudhiṣṭhira; जननी (jananī) - mother; भीमस्य (bhīmasya) - of Bhīma; विजयस्य (vijayasya) - of Vijaya; च (ca) - and; अनाथवत् (anāthavat) - like one without protector; कथम् (katham) - how; दग्धा (dagdhā) - burned; इति (iti) - thus; मुह्यामि (muhyāmi) - I am bewildered; चिन्तयन् (cintayan) - thinking;]
(Of Yudhiṣṭhira the mother, of Bhīma, of Vijaya and; like an orphan how burned thus, I am bewildered, thinking.)
Thinking, I am bewildered as to how the mother of Yudhiṣṭhira, Bhīma, and Vijaya was burned like an orphan. (15-46-10)
वृथा सन्तोषितो वह्निः खाण्डवे सव्यसाचिना। उपकारमजानन्स कृतघ्न इति मे मतिः ॥१५-४६-११॥
vṛthā santoṣito vahniḥ khāṇḍave savyasācinā। upakāram ajānans kṛtaghna iti me matiḥ ॥15-46-11॥
[वृथा (vṛthā) - in vain; सन्तोषितः (santoṣitaḥ) - gratified; वह्निः (vahniḥ) - Agni (fire); खाण्डवे (khāṇḍave) - in the Khāṇḍava (forest); सव्यसाचिना (savyasācinā) - by Savyasācin (Arjuna); उपकारम् (upakāram) - favor; help; अजानन् (ajānans) - not recognizing; कृतघ्नः (kṛtaghnaḥ) - ungrateful; इति (iti) - thus; मे (me) - my; मतिः (matiḥ) - thought; opinion;]
(In vain gratified Agni in the Khāṇḍava (forest) by Savyasācin; favor not recognizing ungrateful thus my thought.)
I think Agni was gratified in vain in the Khāṇḍava forest by Savyasācin (Arjuna); for one who does not recognize favor is ungrateful—this is my opinion. (15-46-11)
यत्रादहत्स भगवान्मातरं सव्यसाचिनः। कृत्वा यो ब्राह्मणच्छद्म भिक्षार्थी समुपागतः ॥ धिगग्निं धिक्च पार्थस्य विश्रुतां सत्यसन्धताम् ॥१५-४६-१२॥
yatrādahatsa bhagavān mātaraṃ savyasācinaḥ। kṛtvā yo brāhmaṇacchadma bhikṣārthī samupāgataḥ॥ dhig agniṃ dhik ca pārthasya viśrutāṃ satyasaṃdhatām॥ 15-46-12॥
[यत्र (yatra) - where; अदहत् (adahat) - burnt; सः (saḥ) - he; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the illustrious; मातरं (mātaraṃ) - mother; सव्यसाचिनः (savyasācinaḥ) - of Savyasācin (Arjuna); कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having assumed; यः (yaḥ) - who; ब्राह्मणच्छद्म (brāhmaṇacchadma) - Brahmin disguise; भिक्षार्थी (bhikṣārthī) - seeking alms; समुपागतः (samupāgataḥ) - approached; धिक् (dhik) - fie upon; अग्निं (agniṃ) - fire; धिक् च (dhik ca) - and fie upon; पार्थस्य (pārthasya) - of Pārtha (Arjuna); विश्रुतां (viśrutāṃ) - well-known; सत्यसन्धताम् (satyasaṃdhatām) - truthfulness;]
(Where he, the illustrious Savyasācin, burnt (his) mother; having assumed a Brahmin disguise, he who, seeking alms, approached; fie upon fire, and fie also upon the well-known truthfulness of Pārtha.)
Where the illustrious Savyasācin burnt his own mother—where, having taken the guise of a Brahmin and seeking alms, he approached—fie upon the fire, and also upon the much-praised truthfulness of Pārtha! (15-46-12)
इदं कष्टतरं चान्यद्भगवन्प्रतिभाति मे। वृथाग्निना समायोगो यदभूत्पृथिवीपतेः ॥१५-४६-१३॥
idaṃ kaṣṭataraṃ ca anyad bhagavan pratibhāti me। vṛthā agninā samāyogaḥ yat abhūt pṛthivīpateḥ ॥15-46-13॥
[इदं (idaṃ) - this; कष्टतरं (kaṣṭataraṃ) - more difficult; च (ca) - and; अन्यत् (anyat) - other; भगवन् (bhagavan) - O revered sir; प्रतिभाति (pratibhāti) - appears; मे (me) - to me; वृथाग्निना (vṛthā agninā) - with useless fire; समायोगः (samāyogaḥ) - association; यत् (yat) - which; अभूत् (abhūt) - happened; पृथिवीपतेः (pṛthivīpateḥ) - of the lord of the earth;]
(This more difficult and other, O revered sir, appears to me: with useless fire association which happened of the lord of the earth.)
O revered sir, another thing, even more difficult, appears to me: that the association with useless fire occurred to the lord of the earth. (15-46-13)
तथा तपस्विनस्तस्य राजर्षेः कौरवस्य ह। कथमेवंविधो मृत्युः प्रशास्य पृथिवीमिमाम् ॥१५-४६-१४॥
tathā tapasvinas tasya rājarṣeḥ kauravasya ha। katham evaṃ-vidho mṛtyuḥ praśāsya pṛthivīm imām॥15-46-14॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; तपस्विनः (tapasvinaḥ) - of the ascetic; तस्य (tasya) - of him; राजर्षेः (rājarṣeḥ) - of the royal sage; कौरवस्य (kauravasya) - of the Kaurava; ह (ha) - indeed; कथम् (katham) - how; एवंविधः (evaṃ-vidhaḥ) - such; मृत्युः (mṛtyuḥ) - death; प्रशास्य (praśāsya) - having ruled; पृथिवीम् (pṛthivīm) - the earth; इमाम् (imām) - this;]
(Thus, of the ascetic, of him, of the royal sage, of the Kaurava, indeed—how such death, having ruled this earth?)
Thus, for this ascetic royal sage of the Kaurava line, indeed, how has such a death come to him, after having ruled this earth? (15-46-14)
तिष्ठत्सु मन्त्रपूतेषु तस्याग्निषु महावने। वृथाग्निना समायुक्तो निष्ठां प्राप्तः पिता मम ॥१५-४६-१५॥
tiṣṭhatsu mantrapūteṣu tasyāgniṣu mahāvane। vṛthāgninā samāyukto niṣṭhāṃ prāptaḥ pitā mama ॥15-46-15॥
[तिष्ठत्सु (tiṣṭhatsu) - while abiding; remaining; standing; मन्त्रपूतेषु (mantrapūteṣu) - purified by mantras; तस्याग्निषु (tasyāgniṣu) - in those fires of his; in his fires; महावने (mahāvane) - in the great forest; वृथाग्निना (vṛthāgninā) - with useless fire; with a vain fire; समायुक्तः (samāyuktaḥ) - joined; accompanied; निष्ठां (niṣṭhām) - end; final state; प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - attained; पिता (pitā) - father; मम (mama) - my;]
(While abiding among those fires of his purified by mantras in the great forest, joined with a vain fire, the end attained (was) my father.)
While residing among his mantra-purified fires in the great forest, accompanied by a useless fire, my father reached his end. (15-46-15)
मन्ये पृथा वेपमाना कृशा धमनिसन्तता। हा तात धर्मराजेति समाक्रन्दन्महाभये ॥१५-४६-१६॥
manye pṛthā vepamānā kṛśā dhamani-santatā। hā tāta dharma-rājeti samākrandann mahā-bhaye ॥15-46-16॥
[मन्ये (manye) - I think; पृथा (pṛthā) - Pṛthā (Kuntī); वेपमाना (vepamānā) - trembling; कृशा (kṛśā) - thin; धमनिसन्तता (dhamani-santatā) - with veins prominent; हा (hā) - alas; तात (tāta) - O father; धर्मराजेति (dharma-rājeti) - O Dharma-rāja (Yudhiṣṭhira)!; समाक्रन्दन् (samākrandan) - crying out; महाभये (mahā-bhaye) - in great fear;]
(I think Pṛthā, trembling, thin, with veins prominent, alas, O father, "O Dharma-rāja!" crying out, in great fear.)
I think Pṛthā, trembling and thin with pronounced veins, cried out in great fear, "Alas! O father, O Dharma-rāja!" (15-46-16)
भीम पर्याप्नुहि भयादिति चैवाभिवाशती। समन्ततः परिक्षिप्ता माता मेऽभूद्दवाग्निना ॥१५-४६-१७॥
bhīma paryāpnuḥi bhayāditi caiva abhivāśatī। samantataḥ parikṣiptā mātā me'bhūd davāgninā ॥15-46-17॥
[भीम (bhīma) - O Bhīma; पर्याप्नुहि (paryāpnuḥi) - come near; भयात् (bhayāt) - from fear; इति (iti) - thus; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; अभिवाशती (abhivāśatī) - uttering; समन्ततः (samantataḥ) - on all sides; परिक्षिप्ता (parikṣiptā) - enclosed; माता (mātā) - mother; मे (me) - my; अभूत् (abhūt) - became; दवाग्निना (davāgninā) - by the forest fire;]
(O Bhīma, "come near from fear," and indeed uttering, on all sides enclosed, my mother became by the forest fire.)
O Bhīma, my mother, uttering "Come near out of fear," became surrounded on all sides by the forest fire. (15-46-17)
सहदेवः प्रियस्तस्याः पुत्रेभ्योऽधिक एव तु। न चैनां मोक्षयामास वीरो माद्रवतीसुतः ॥१५-४६-१८॥
sahadevaḥ priyas tasyāḥ putrebhyo' dhika eva tu। na caināṃ mokṣayāmāsa vīro mādravatī-sutaḥ ॥15-46-18॥
[सहदेवः (sahadevaḥ) - Sahadeva; प्रियः (priyaḥ) - beloved; तस्याः (tasyāḥ) - of her; पुत्रेभ्यः (putrebhyaḥ) - than her sons; अधिक (adhika) - more; एव (eva) - indeed; तु (tu) - but; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; एनाम् (enām) - her; मोक्षयामास (mokṣayāmāsa) - freed; वीरः (vīraḥ) - the hero; माद्रवतीसुतः (mādravatī-sutaḥ) - the son of Mādravatī;]
(Sahadeva was more beloved of her than her sons indeed but. Not and her freed the hero, the son of Mādravatī.)
Sahadeva was truly more beloved to her than her other sons, but the heroic son of Mādravatī did not release her. (15-46-18)
तच्छ्रुत्वा रुरुदुः सर्वे समालिङ्ग्य परस्परम्। पाण्डवाः पञ्च दुःखार्ता भूतानीव युगक्षये ॥१५-४६-१९॥
tacchrutvā ruruduḥ sarve samāliṅgya parasparam। pāṇḍavāḥ pañca duḥkhārtā bhūtānīva yugakṣaye ॥15-46-19॥
[तत् (tat) - that; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; रुरुदुः (ruruduḥ) - they wept; सर्वे (sarve) - all; समालिङ्ग्य (samāliṅgya) - having embraced; परस्परम् (parasparam) - each other; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; पञ्च (pañca) - five; दुःखार्ताः (duḥkhārtāḥ) - afflicted with grief; भूतानि (bhūtāni) - beings; इव (iva) - like; युगक्षये (yugakṣaye) - at the end of an age;]
(That having heard, all wept, having embraced each other; the five Pāṇḍavas afflicted with grief, like beings at the end of an age.)
Having heard that, all the five Pāṇḍavas, afficted with grief, wept, embracing each other, like creatures at the end of an age. (15-46-19)
तेषां तु पुरुषेन्द्राणां रुदतां रुदितस्वनः। प्रासादाभोगसंरुद्धो अन्वरौत्सीत्स रोदसी ॥१५-४६-२०॥
teṣāṃ tu puruṣendrāṇāṃ rudatāṃ ruditasvanaḥ। prāsādābhogasaṃruddho anvarautsīt sa rodasī ॥15-46-20॥
[तेषां (teṣām) - of those; तु (tu) - but; पुरुषेन्द्राणां (puruṣendrāṇām) - of the foremost among men; रुदतां (rudatām) - of the weeping; रुदितस्वनः (ruditasvanaḥ) - crying sound; प्रासादाभोगसंरुद्धः (prāsādābhogasaṃruddhaḥ) - obstructed by the extent of the palaces; अन्वरौत्सीत् (anvarautsīt) - followed along; स (sa) - that; रोदसी (rodasī) - both heaven and earth;]
(Of those but foremost among men, of the weeping, the crying sound, obstructed by the extent of the palaces, followed along both heaven and earth.)
