Vaiśampāyana said.
षट्त्रिंशे त्वथ सम्प्राप्ते वर्षे कौरवनन्दनः। ददर्श विपरीतानि निमित्तानि युधिष्ठिरः ॥१६-१-१॥
ṣaṭtriṁśe tv atha samprāpte varṣe kauravanandanaḥ। dadarśa viparītāni nimittāni yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ॥16-1-1॥
[षट्त्रिंशे (ṣaṭtriṁśe) - in the thirty-sixth; तु (tu) - but; अथ (atha) - then; सम्प्राप्ते (samprāpte) - having arrived; वर्षे (varṣe) - year; कौरवनन्दनः (kauravanandanaḥ) - delight of the Kauravas; ददर्श (dadarśa) - saw; विपरीतानि (viparītāni) - inauspicious; निमित्तानि (nimittāni) - omens; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira;]
(In the thirty-sixth, but then, having arrived, year, the delight of the Kauravas, saw, inauspicious, omens, Yudhishthira.)
But when the thirty-sixth year arrived, Yudhishthira, the delight of the Kauravas, saw inauspicious omens. (16-1-1)
ववुर्वाताः सनिर्घाता रूक्षाः शर्करवर्षिणः। अपसव्यानि शकुना मण्डलानि प्रचक्रिरे ॥१६-१-२॥
vavur-vātāḥ sa-nirghātā rūkṣāḥ śarkara-varṣiṇaḥ। apasavyāni śakunā maṇḍalāni pracakrire॥16-1-2॥
[ववुः (vavur) - blew (they); वाताः (vātāḥ) - winds; सनिर्घाताः (sa-nirghātāḥ) - with thunderclaps; रूक्षाः (rūkṣāḥ) - harsh; शर्करवर्षिणः (śarkara-varṣiṇaḥ) - hailing (those that pour down gravel/hail); अपसव्यानि (apasavyāni) - leftward (contrary/inauspicious); शकुना (śakunāḥ) - birds (omens); मण्डलानि (maṇḍalāni) - circles; प्रचक्रिरे (pracakrire) - made (they moved, circled);]
(Blew winds with thunderclaps, harsh, hailing. Leftward birds circles made.)
Harsh winds with thunderclaps and hail blew, and birds, as ill omens, circled to the left. (16-1-2)
प्रत्यगूहुर्महानद्यो दिशो नीहारसंवृताः। उल्काश्चाङ्गारवर्षिण्यः प्रपेतुर्गगनाद्भुवि ॥१६-१-३॥
pratyagūhur mahānadyo diśo nīhārasaṁvṛtāḥ. ulkāś cāṅgāravarṣiṇyaḥ prapetur gaganād bhuvi ॥16-1-3॥
[प्रत्यगूहुः (pratyagūhuḥ) - enveloped; covered; महा-नद्यः (mahā-nadyaḥ) - great rivers; दिशः (diśaḥ) - quarters; directions; नीहार-संवृताः (nīhāra-saṁvṛtāḥ) - enveloped by fog; उल्काः (ulkāḥ) - meteors; firebrands; च (ca) - and; अङ्गार-वर्षिण्यः (aṅgāra-varṣiṇyaḥ) - raining coals; that which shower coals; प्रपेतुः (prapetuḥ) - fell; गगनात् (gaganāt) - from the sky; भुवि (bhuvi) - on the earth;]
(The great rivers enveloped, the quarters enveloped by fog. Meteors and those showering coals fell from the sky upon the earth.)
The great rivers were covered, the directions were shrouded in fog. Meteors and fiery coals rained down from the sky onto the earth. (16-1-3)
आदित्यो रजसा राजन्समवच्छन्नमण्डलः। विरश्मिरुदये नित्यं कबन्धैः समदृश्यत ॥१६-१-४॥
ādityo rajasā rājan samavacchannamaṇḍalaḥ| viraśmir udaye nityaṃ kabandhaiḥ samadṛśyata ॥16-1-4॥
[आदित्यः (ādityaḥ) - the Sun; रजसा (rajasā) - by dust; राजन् (rājan) - O king; सम्-अवच्छन्न-मण्डलः (sam-avacchanna-maṇḍalaḥ) - with disk completely covered; वि-रश्मिः (vi-raśmiḥ) - with rays dispersed; उदये (udaye) - at the rise; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; कबन्धैः (kabandhaiḥ) - by clouds; सम्-अदृश्यत (sam-adṛśyata) - was seen as;]
(The Sun, O king, with disk completely covered by dust, with rays dispersed, at the rise, always, by clouds, was seen as.)
O king, the Sun, whose disk was completely covered by dust and whose rays were dispersed, was always seen at sunrise as if concealed by clouds. (16-1-4)
परिवेषाश्च दृश्यन्ते दारुणाः चन्द्रसूर्ययोः। त्रिवर्णाः श्यामरूक्षान्तास्तथा भस्मारुणप्रभाः ॥१६-१-५॥
pariveṣāś ca dṛśyante dāruṇāḥ candrasūryayoḥ। trivarṇāḥ śyāmarūkṣāntās tathā bhasmāruṇaprabhāḥ॥16-1-5॥
[परिवेषाः (pariveṣāḥ) - haloes; च (ca) - and; दृश्यन्ते (dṛśyante) - are seen; दारुणाः (dāruṇāḥ) - terrible; चन्द्रसूर्ययोः (candrasūryayoḥ) - of the Moon and the Sun; त्रिवर्णाः (trivarṇāḥ) - three-colored; श्यामरूक्षान्ताः (śyāmarūkṣāntāḥ) - ending in dark, harsh (colors); तथा (tathā) - and also; भस्मारुणप्रभाः (bhasmāruṇaprabhāḥ) - having the luster of ash and red;]
(And haloes are seen, terrible, of the Moon and the Sun; three-colored, ending in dark and harsh (shades), and also having the luster of ash and red.)

एते चान्ये च बहव उत्पाता भयशंसिनः। दृश्यन्तेऽहरहो राजन्हृदयोद्वेगकारकाः ॥१६-१-६॥
ete cānye ca bahava utpātā bhayaśaṁsinaḥ। dṛśyante'haraho rājan hṛdayodvegakārakāḥ॥16-1-6॥
[एते (ete) - these; च (ca) - and; अन्ये (anye) - others; च (ca) - and; बहवः (bahavaḥ) - many; उत्पाता (utpātāḥ) - omens; भयशंसिनः (bhayaśaṁsinaḥ) - portending danger; दृश्यन्ते (dṛśyante) - are seen; अहरहः (aharahaḥ) - every day; राजन् (rājan) - O King; हृदय-उद्वेग-कारकाः (hṛdaya-udvega-kārakāḥ) - causing agitation of the heart;]
(These and others and many omens portending danger are seen every day, O King, causing agitation of the heart.)

कस्यचित्त्वथ कालस्य कुरुराजो युधिष्ठिरः। शुश्राव वृष्णिचक्रस्य मौसले कदनं कृतम् ॥१६-१-७॥
kasyacit tva tha kālasya kururājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। śuśrāva vṛṣṇicakrasya mausale kadanaṃ kṛtam ॥16-1-7॥
[कस्यचित् (kasyacit) - of some (unspecified); त् (t) - indeed; (emphatic particle) अथ (atha) - then; कालस्य (kālasya) - of time; कुरुराजः (kururājaḥ) - the king of the Kurus; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira; शुश्राव (śuśrāva) - heard; वृष्णिचक्रस्य (vṛṣṇicakrasya) - of the circle (clan) of the Vrishnis; मौसले (mausale) - at (the place) of Mausala; कदनं (kadanaṃ) - slaughter; कृतम् (kṛtam) - done;]
(Of some indeed then of time the king of the Kurus Yudhishthira heard of the Vrishni circle at Mausala the slaughter done.)
Then, after some time, King Yudhishthira of the Kurus heard that the Vrishni clan had been slaughtered at Mausala. (16-1-7)
विमुक्तं वासुदेवं च श्रुत्वा रामं च पाण्डवः। समानीयाब्रवीद्भ्रातॄन्किं करिष्याम इत्युत ॥१६-१-८॥
vimuktaṃ vāsudevaṃ ca śrutvā rāmaṃ ca pāṇḍavaḥ. samānīyābravīdbhṛātṝnkiṃ kariṣyāma ityuta ॥16-1-8॥
[विमुक्तं (vimuktam) - set free; released; वासुदेवं (vāsudevam) - Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa; acc. sg.); च (ca) - and; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; रामं (rāmam) - Rāma (Balarāma; acc. sg.); च (ca) - and; पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - the Pāṇḍava (Yudhiṣṭhira; nom. sg.); समानीय (samānīya) - having brought together; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; भ्रातॄन् (bhrātṝn) - brothers (acc. pl.); किं (kiṃ) - what; करिष्याम (kariṣyāma) - shall we do; इति (iti) - thus; उत (uta) - indeed;]
(Having heard that Vāsudeva was released and Rāma (Balarāma), the Pāṇḍava, having brought together the brothers, said: "What shall we do?" indeed.)
When the Pāṇḍava heard that Vāsudeva had been released and Rāma as well, he assembled his brothers and said, "What shall we do now?" (16-1-8)
परस्परं समासाद्य ब्रह्मदण्डबलात्कृतान्। वृष्णीन्विनष्टांस्ते श्रुत्वा व्यथिताः पाण्डवाभवन् ॥१६-१-९॥
parasparaṃ samāsādya brahmadaṇḍabalātkṛtān| vṛṣṇīn vinaṣṭāṃs te śrutvā vyathitāḥ pāṇḍavābhavan ॥16-1-9॥
[परस्परम् (parasparam) - each other; समासाद्य (samāsādya) - having approached; ब्रह्मदण्डबलात्-कृतान् (brahmadaṇḍabalāt-kṛtān) - made (to act) by the force of the Brahma-daṇḍa; वृष्णीन् (vṛṣṇīn) - the Vṛṣṇis; विनष्टान् (vinaṣṭān) - destroyed; ते (te) - they; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; व्यथिताः (vyathitāḥ) - distressed; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; अभवन् (abhavan) - became;]
(Having approached each other, made (to act) by the force of the Brahma-daṇḍa, the Vṛṣṇis destroyed; they, having heard (this), the Pāṇḍavas became distressed.)
When the Pāṇḍavas heard that the Vṛṣṇis, compelled by the force of the Brahma-daṇḍa, had destroyed each other, they became distressed. (16-1-9)
निधनं वासुदेवस्य समुद्रस्येव शोषणम्। वीरा न श्रद्दधुस्तस्य विनाशं शार्ङ्गधन्वनः ॥१६-१-१०॥
nidhanaṃ vāsudevasya samudrasyeva śoṣaṇam। vīrā na śraddadhustasya vināśaṃ śārṅgadhanvanaḥ ॥16-1-10॥
[निधनं (nidhanaṃ) - destruction; demise; वासुदेवस्य (vāsudevasya) - of Vāsudeva; समुद्रस्येव (samudrasyeva) - like of the ocean; शोषणम् (śoṣaṇam) - drying up; वीरा (vīrā) - heroes; न (na) - not; श्रद्दधुस् (śraddadhus) - did believe; तस्य (tasya) - of him; his; विनाशं (vināśaṃ) - destruction; शार्ङ्गधन्वनः (śārṅgadhanvanaḥ) - of the wielder of Śārṅga (Kṛṣṇa);]
(The destruction of Vāsudeva, like the drying up of the ocean; heroes did not believe his destruction, of the wielder of Śārṅga (Kṛṣṇa).)
The heroes did not believe in the destruction of Vāsudeva, just as one would not believe in the drying up of the ocean, the demise of the wielder of Śārṅga (Kṛṣṇa). (16-1-10)
मौसलं ते परिश्रुत्य दुःखशोकसमन्विताः। विषण्णा हतसङ्कल्पाः पाण्डवाः समुपाविशन् ॥१६-१-११॥
mausalaṃ te pariśrutya duḥkhaśokasamanvitāḥ। viṣaṇṇā hatasaṅkalpāḥ pāṇḍavāḥ samupāviśan ॥16-1-11॥
[मौसलं (mausalam) - the Mausala (destructive event); ते (te) - they; परिश्रुत्य (pariśrutya) - having completely heard; दुःखशोकसमन्विताः (duḥkhaśoka-samanvitāḥ) - endowed with suffering and sorrow; विषण्णा (viṣaṇṇāḥ) - dejected; हतसङ्कल्पाः (hata-saṅkalpāḥ) - having their resolves destroyed; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; समुपाविशन् (samupāviśan) - sat together;]
(The Mausala (destructive event) they having completely heard, endowed with suffering and sorrow, dejected, having their resolves destroyed, the Pāṇḍavas sat together.)
When they heard of the Mausala event, filled with suffering and sorrow, dejected and with their resolves destroyed, the Pāṇḍavas sat down together. (16-1-11)
