मुनिशापात्साम्बस्य मुसलप्रसवः
muniśāpātsām basya musalaprasavaḥ

Because of the sage's curse, a club was born to Sāmba.

(How destroyed, O Lord, the Andhakas together with the Vrishnis, while looking of Vāsudeva, the Bhojas and indeed the great warriors?)
O Lord, how were the Andhakas, the Vrishnis, the Bhojas, and the great warriors all destroyed together while Vāsudeva was witnessing this? (16-2-1)

ṣaṭtriṃśe'tha tato varṣe vṛṣṇīnām anayo mahān। anyonyaṃ musalaiḥ te tu nijaghnuḥ kāla-coditāḥ ॥16-2-2॥

O best of Brāhmaṇas, by whom were those heroes, the Vṛṣṇis, Andhakas, and the Bhojas, cursed, so that they all went to destruction? Please tell me this in detail. (16-2-3)

viśvāmitraṃ ca kaṇvaṃ ca nāradaṃ ca tapodhanam। sāraṇapramukhā vīrā dadṛśur dvārakāgatān॥16-2-4॥

(Viśvāmitra and Kaṇva and Nārada and Tapodhana, heroes headed by Sāraṇa, saw those who had come to Dvārakā.)
Viśvāmitra, Kaṇva, Nārada, and Tapodhana were seen by the warriors headed by Sāraṇa as they arrived in Dvārakā. (16-2-4)
ते वै साम्बं पुरस्कृत्य भूषयित्वा स्त्रियं यथा। अब्रुवन्नुपसङ्गम्य दैवदण्डनिपीडिताः ॥१६-२-५॥
te vai sāmbam puraskṛtya bhūṣayitvā striyaṃ yathā। abruvann upasaṅgamya daivadaṇḍanipīḍitāḥ ॥16-2-5॥

(They indeed, having placed Sāmba at the front, having adorned (him), like a woman; having approached, oppressed by the punishment of fate, they spoke.)
They, indeed, having put Sāmba at the front and dressed him as a woman, approached and, afflicted by divine punishment, spoke. (16-2-5)
इयं स्त्री पुत्रकामस्य बभ्रोरमिततेजसः। ऋषयः साधु जानीत किमियं जनयिष्यति ॥१६-२-६॥
iyaṃ strī putrakāmasya babhror amitatejasaḥ. ṛṣayaḥ sādhu jānīta kim iyaṃ janayiṣyati ॥16-2-6॥
[इयं (iyaṃ) - this; (feminine); स्त्री (strī) - woman; पुत्रकामस्य (putrakāmasya) - of Putrakāma; बभ्रोः (babhroḥ) - of Babhrū; अमिततेजसः (amitatejasaḥ) - of boundless energy; ऋषयः (ṛṣayaḥ) - the sages; साधु (sādhu) - well; (indeed); जानीत (jānīta) - (you all) know; किम् (kim) - what; इयं (iyaṃ) - this; (feminine); जनयिष्यति (janayiṣyati) - (she) will give birth;]
(This woman of Putrakāma, of Babhrū of boundless energy. O sages, well know what this (woman) will give birth to.)
This woman, belonging to Putrakāma (the son of Babhrū of boundless energy)—Sages! Well, know what this woman will give birth to. (16-2-6)
इत्युक्तास्ते तदा राजन्विप्रलम्भप्रधर्षिताः। प्रत्यब्रुवंस्तान्मुनयो यत्तच्छृणु नराधिप ॥१६-२-७॥
ityuktās te tadā rājan vipralambha-pradharṣitāḥ। pratyabruvaṃs tān munayo yat tac chṛṇu narādhipa॥16-2-7॥

वृष्ण्यन्धकविनाशाय मुसलं घोरमायसम्। वासुदेवस्य दायादः साम्बोऽयं जनयिष्यति ॥१६-२-८॥
vṛṣṇy-andhaka-vināśāya musalam ghoram āyasam। vāsudevasya dāyādaḥ sāmbḥo'yaṁ janayiṣyati॥16-2-8॥
[वृष्ण्यन्धकविनाशाय (vṛṣṇy-andhaka-vināśāya) - for the destruction of the Vṛṣṇis and Andhakas; मुसलं (musalam) - club; घोरम् (ghoram) - terrible; आयसम् (āyasam) - made of iron; वासुदेवस्य (vāsudevasya) - of Vāsudeva; दायादः (dāyādaḥ) - the offspring; साम्बः (sāmbaḥ) - Sāmba; अयम् (ayam) - this; जनयिष्यति (janayiṣyati) - will beget;]
(For the destruction of the Vṛṣṇis and Andhakas, a terrible iron club the offspring of Vāsudeva, this Sāmba, will beget.)
Sāmba, the son of Vāsudeva, will bring forth a terrible iron club for the destruction of the Vṛṣṇis and Andhakas. (16-2-8)
येन यूयं सुदुर्वृत्ता नृशंसा जातमन्यवः। उच्छेत्तारः कुलं कृत्स्नमृते रामजनार्दनौ ॥१६-२-९॥
yena yūyaṃ sudurvṛttā nṛśaṃsā jātamanyavaḥ| ucchettāraḥ kulaṃ kṛtsnam ṛte rāmajanārdanau ॥16-2-9॥
[येन (yena) - by whom; यूयं (yūyam) - you (plural); सुदुर्वृत्ता (sudurvṛttāḥ) - very wicked; नृशंसा (nṛśaṃsāḥ) - cruel; जातमन्यवः (jātamanyavaḥ) - arrogant; उच्छेत्तारः (ucchettāraḥ) - destroyers; कुलं (kulaṃ) - family; कृत्स्नम् (kṛtsnam) - entire; ऋते (ṛte) - except; रामजनार्दनौ (rāmajanārdanau) - Rāma and Janārdana;]
(By whom you very wicked, cruel, arrogant destroyers except for Rāma and Janārdana, the entire family.)
Because of whom you, extremely wicked, cruel, and arrogant ones, have become destroyers of the entire family except for Rāma and Janārdana. (16-2-9)
समुद्रं यास्यति श्रीमांस्त्यक्त्वा देहं हलायुधः। जरा कृष्णं महात्मानं शयानं भुवि भेत्स्यति ॥१६-२-१०॥
samudraṁ yāsyati śrīmān tyaktvā dehaṁ halāyudhaḥ. jarā kṛṣṇaṁ mahātmānaṁ śayānaṁ bhuvi bhetsyati ॥16-2-10॥
[समुद्रं (samudram) - ocean; यास्यति (yāsyati) - will go; श्रीमान् (śrīmān) - the illustrious; त्यक्त्वा (tyaktvā) - having abandoned; देहं (deham) - body; हलायुधः (halāyudhaḥ) - Halāyudha; जरा (jarā) - old age; कृष्णं (kṛṣṇam) - Kṛṣṇa; महात्मानं (mahātmānam) - the great-souled; शयानं (śayānam) - lying; भुवि (bhuvi) - on the ground; भेत्स्यति (bhetsyati) - will pierce;]
(Halāyudha, the illustrious, having abandoned (his) body, will go to the ocean. Old age will pierce Kṛṣṇa, the great-souled, lying on the ground.)
Halāyudha, the illustrious one, will abandon his body and proceed to the ocean. Old age will pierce Kṛṣṇa, the great-souled one as he lies upon the earth. (16-2-10)
इत्यब्रुवन्त ते राजन्प्रलब्धास्तैर्दुरात्मभिः। मुनयः क्रोधरक्ताक्षाः समीक्ष्याथ परस्परम् ॥१६-२-११॥
ity abruvanta te rājan prabaddhāḥ taiḥ durātmabhiḥ। munayaḥ krodha-raktākṣāḥ samīkṣya atha parasparam॥16-2-11॥
[इति (iti) - thus; अब्रुवन् (abruvan) - (they) spoke; ते (te) - they; राजन् (rājan) - O King; प्रलब्धाः (pralabdhāḥ) - insulted; तैः (taiḥ) - by them; दुरात्मभिः (durātmabhiḥ) - evil-minded; मुनयः (munayaḥ) - the sages; क्रोधरक्ताक्षाः (krodha-raktākṣāḥ) - with eyes reddened by anger; समीक्ष्य (samīkṣya) - having looked at; अथ (atha) - then; परस्परम् (parasparam) - one another;]
(Thus spoke they, O King, insulted by those evil-minded ones; the sages, with eyes reddened by anger, then, having looked at one another.)
Thus, O King, those sages, insulted by the evil-minded ones, spoke with eyes reddened by anger, after looking at one another. (16-2-11)
तथोक्त्वा मुनयस्ते तु ततः केशवमभ्ययुः। अथाब्रवीत्तदा वृष्णीञ्श्रुत्वैवं मधुसूदनः। अन्तज्ञो मतिमांस्तस्य भवितव्यं तथेति तान् ॥१६-२-१३॥
tathoktvā munayas te tu tataḥ keśavam abhyayuḥ। athābravīt tadā vṛṣṇīñ śrutvaivaṁ madhusūdanaḥ। antajño matimāṁs tasya bhavitavyaṁ tatheti tān ॥16-2-13॥
[तथा उक्त्वा (tathā uktvā) - thus having said; मुनयः (munayaḥ) - the sages; ते (te) - they; तु (tu) - but; ततः (tataḥ) - then; केशवम् (keśavam) - Keshava; अभ्ययुः (abhyayuḥ) - approached; अथ (atha) - then; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; तदा (tadā) - at that time; वृष्णीन् (vṛṣṇīn) - the Vrishnis; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; एवं (evaṁ) - thus; मधुसूदनः (madhusūdanaḥ) - Madhusudana; अन्तज्ञः (antajñaḥ) - knower of the end; मतिमान् (matimān) - possessed of wisdom; तस्य (tasya) - of him; भवितव्यम् (bhavitavyam) - that which must happen; तथा (tathā) - thus; इति (iti) - so, thus; तान् (tān) - to them;]
(Thus having said, the sages, they but then Keshava approached. Then said at that time to the Vrishnis, having heard thus, Madhusudana, knower of the end, possessed of wisdom, of him, that which must happen, thus so to them.)
After thus speaking, the sages then approached Keshava. Then, having heard in this way, Madhusudana, the knower of the end and possessed of wisdom, said to the Vrishnis: "That which must be shall happen thus to him." (16-2-13)
एवमुक्त्वा हृषीकेशः प्रविवेश पुनर्गृहान्। कृतान्तमन्यथा नैच्छत्कर्तुं स जगतः प्रभुः ॥१६-२-१४॥
evam-uktvā hṛṣīkeśaḥ praviveśa punar-gṛhān। kṛtāntaṃ anyathā na aicchat kartuṃ sa jagataḥ prabhuḥ ॥16-2-14॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; हृषीकेशः (hṛṣīkeśaḥ) - Hṛṣīkeśa (Kṛṣṇa); प्रविवेश (praviveśa) - entered; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; गृहान् (gṛhān) - houses; कृतान्तम् (kṛtāntam) - final destiny (death); अन्यथा (anyathā) - otherwise; न (na) - not; ऐच्छत् (aicchat) - desired; कर्तुम् (kartum) - to do; सः (saḥ) - he; जगतः (jagataḥ) - of the world; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - Lord;]
(Thus having spoken, Hṛṣīkeśa entered again the houses. The final destiny otherwise not desired to do, he, the Lord of the world.)
Thus, having spoken, Hṛṣīkeśa (Kṛṣṇa) again entered the houses; he, the Lord of the world, did not wish to act otherwise than fate. (16-2-14)
श्वोभूतेऽथ ततः साम्बो मुसलं तदसूत वै। वृष्ण्यन्धकविनाशाय किङ्करप्रतिमं महत् ॥१६-२-१५॥
śvobhūte’tha tataḥ sāmbho musalaṃ tadasūta vai| vṛṣṇyandhakavināśāya kiṅkarapratimaṃ mahat ॥16-2-15॥
[श्वोभूते (śvobhūte) - when tomorrow had arrived; अथ (atha) - then; ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; साम्बः (sāmbaḥ) - Sāmba; मुसलम् (musalam) - a pestle; तत् (tat) - that; असूत (asūta) - brought forth; वै (vai) - indeed; वृष्ण्यन्धकविनाशाय (vṛṣṇyandhakavināśāya) - for the destruction of the Vṛṣṇis and Andhakas; किङ्करप्रतिमम् (kiṅkarapratimam) - resembling a servant (attendant); महत् (mahat) - great; ॥१६-२-१५॥ (॥16-2-15॥) - (16-2-15);]
(When tomorrow had arrived, then thereafter Sāmba indeed brought forth that pestle, great, resembling a servant, for the destruction of the Vṛṣṇis and Andhakas.)
After the following day had arrived, then Sāmba brought forth that great pestle, which resembled a club, meant for the destruction of the Vṛṣṇis and Andhakas. (16-2-15)
प्रसूतं शापजं घोरं तच्च राज्ञे न्यवेदयन्। विषण्णरूपस्तद्राजा सूक्ष्मं चूर्णमकारयत् ॥१६-२-१६॥
prasūtaṁ śāpajaṁ ghoraṁ tac ca rājñe nyavedayan। viṣaṇṇarūpas tad rājā sūkṣmaṁ cūrṇam akarayat ॥16-2-16॥
[प्रसूतं (prasūtaṁ) - produced; born; generated; शापजं (śāpajaṁ) - born from a curse; produced due to a curse; घोरं (ghoraṁ) - terrible; dreadful; तत् (tat) - that; च (ca) - and; राज्ञे (rājñe) - to the king; न्यवेदयन् (nyavedayan) - they reported; informed; विषण्णरूपः (viṣaṇṇarūpaḥ) - with a dejected appearance; looking sorrowful; तत् (tat) - that; राजा (rājā) - king; सूक्ष्मं (sūkṣmaṁ) - fine; subtle; चूर्णम् (cūrṇam) - powder; अकारयत् (akarayat) - caused (it) to be made; made;]
(Produced by curse, dreadful, that they informed to the king. With dejected appearance, that king caused fine powder to be made.)
They reported to the king that which had been produced from a curse and was dreadful. The king, appearing dejected, had it made into a fine powder. (16-2-16)
प्राक्षिपन्सागरे तच्च पुरुषा राजशासनात्। अघोषयंश्च नगरे वचनादाहुकस्य च ॥१६-२-१७॥
prākṣipansāgare tac ca puruṣā rājaśāsanāt। aghoṣayaṁś ca nagare vacanād āhukasya ca ॥16-2-17॥
[प्राक्षिपन् (prākṣipan) - threw; सागरे (sāgare) - in the ocean; तत् (tat) - that; च (ca) - and; पुरुषाः (puruṣāḥ) - men; राजशासनात् (rājaśāsanāt) - by order of the king; अघोषयन् (aghoṣayan) - announced; च (ca) - and; नगरे (nagare) - in the city; वचनात् (vacanāt) - by command; आहुकस्य (āhukasya) - of Āhuka; च (ca) - and;]
(The men, by order of the king, threw that into the ocean, and also announced in the city by command of Āhuka.)
By the king’s order, the men cast that into the ocean and announced in the city by the command of Āhuka. (16-2-17)
अद्य प्रभृति सर्वेषु वृष्ण्यन्धकगृहेष्विह। सुरासवो न कर्तव्यः सर्वैर्नगरवासिभिः ॥१६-२-१८॥
adya prabhṛti sarveṣu vṛṣṇy-andhaka-gṛheṣu iha। surāsavaḥ na kartavyaḥ sarvaiḥ nagara-vāsibhiḥ ॥16-2-18॥
[अद्य (adya) - today; प्रभृति (prabhṛti) - from now on; सर्वेषु (sarveṣu) - in all; वृष्ण्यन्धकगृहेषु (vṛṣṇy-andhaka-gṛheṣu) - in the houses of Vṛṣṇi and Andhaka; इह (iha) - here; सुरासवः (surāsavaḥ) - liquor; न (na) - not; कर्तव्यः (kartavyaḥ) - should be made; सर्वैः (sarvaiḥ) - by all; नगरवासिभिः (nagara-vāsibhiḥ) - city-dwellers;]
(Today from now on, in all houses of Vṛṣṇi and Andhaka here, liquor should not be made by all city-dwellers.)
From today onwards, liquor should not be made in any of the houses of the Vṛṣṇis and Andhakas here by any of the city-dwellers. (16-2-18)
यश्च नोऽविदितं कुर्यात्पेयं कश्चिन्नरः क्वचित्। जीवन्स शूलमारोहेत्स्वयं कृत्वा सबान्धवः ॥१६-२-१९॥
yaś ca no'viditaṃ kuryāt peyaṃ kaścin naraḥ kvacit। jīvan sa śūlam ārohet svayaṃ kṛtvā sabāndhavaḥ॥ 16-2-19॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; च (ca) - and; नः (naḥ) - to us; अविदितं ('aviditam) - unknown; कुर्यात् (kuryāt) - should do; पेयं (peyam) - to be drunk; कश्चित् (kaścit) - any; नरः (naraḥ) - man; क्वचित् (kvacit) - anywhere; जीवन् (jīvan) - living; सः (saḥ) - he; शूलम् (śūlam) - stake; आरोहेत् (ārohet) - should mount; स्वयम् (svayam) - himself; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; स-बान्धवः (sa-bāndhavaḥ) - with relatives;]
(And whoever should cause us to drink something unknown, any man, at any place, he living, he should mount the stake himself, having done (this act), with his relatives.)
And whoever—any man, anywhere—should give us something unknown to drink, he and his relatives, while still alive, should himself be impaled on a stake. (16-2-19)
ततो राजभयात्सर्वे नियमं चक्रिरे तदा। नराः शासनमाज्ञाय तस्य राज्ञो महात्मनः ॥१६-२-२०॥
tato rājabhayātsarve niyamaṃ cakrire tadā. narāḥ śāsanamājñāya tasya rājño mahātmanaḥ ॥16-2-20॥

(Then, from fear of the king, all made restraint at that time. The men, having known the command of him, of the great-souled king.)
