praviśannarjuno rājannaśramaṃ satyavādinaḥ। dadarśāsīnamekānte muniṃ satyavatīsutam ॥16-9-1॥

O king, as Arjuna entered the hermitage of the truth-speaking sage, he saw seated alone the sage, son of Satyavati. (16-9-1)
स तमासाद्य धर्मज्ञमुपतस्थे महाव्रतम्। अर्जुनोऽस्मीति नामास्मै निवेद्याभ्यवदत्ततः ॥१६-९-२॥
sa tam āsādya dharmajñam upatasthe mahāvratam। arjuno'smīti nāmāasmai nivedyābhyavadattataḥ ॥16-9-2॥

(He having approached him, the knower of dharma and great vow-holder, attended upon (him). Arjuna, saying "I am Arjuna" and informing his name to him, then addressed him.)
He, approaching him who was a knower of dharma and a holder of great vows, waited upon him. Then, informing him of his name as "I am Arjuna," he addressed him.
स्वागतं तेऽस्त्विति प्राह मुनिः सत्यवतीसुतः। आस्यतामिति चोवाच प्रसन्नात्मा महामुनिः ॥१६-९-३॥
svāgataṁ te'stv iti prāha muniḥ satyavatīsutaḥ। āsyatām iti ca uvāca prasannātmā mahāmuniḥ॥16-9-3॥

(Welcome to you let it be thus, said the sage, son of Satyavatī. May (you) sit thus and spoke, with a serene mind, the great sage. (16-9-3))
The sage, son of Satyavatī, said, "Welcome to you!" The great sage with a serene mind also said, "Please be seated." (16-9-3)
तमप्रतीतमनसं निःश्वसन्तं पुनः पुनः। निर्विण्णमनसं दृष्ट्वा पार्थं व्यासोऽब्रवीदिदम् ॥१६-९-४॥
tam apratītamanasaṃ niḥśvasantaṃ punaḥ punaḥ nirviṇṇamanasaṃ dṛṣṭvā pārthaṃ vyāsaḥ abravīt idam ॥16-9-4॥
[तम् (tam) - him; अप्रतीतमनसं (apratītamanasaṃ) - with dejected mind; निःश्वसन्तं (niḥśvasantam) - sighing; पुनः पुनः (punaḥ punaḥ) - again and again; निर्विण्णमनसं (nirviṇṇamanasaṃ) - with disheartened mind; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; पार्थं (pārtham) - Pārtha (Arjuna); व्यासः (vyāsaḥ) - Vyāsa; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; इदम् (idam) - this;]
(Him with dejected mind, sighing again and again, with disheartened mind, having seen, Pārtha, Vyāsa said this.)
Vyāsa, having seen Pārtha with a dejected and disheartened mind, repeatedly sighing, spoke these words. (16-9-4)
अवीरजोऽभिघातस्ते ब्राह्मणो वा हतस्त्वया। युद्धे पराजितो वासि गतश्रीरिव लक्ष्यसे ॥१६-९-५॥
avīrajo’bhighātas te brāhmaṇo vā hatas tvayā। yuddhe parājito vāsi gataśrīr iva lakṣyase ॥16-9-5॥
[अवीरजः (avīrajaḥ) - without heroic offspring;” अभिघातः (abhighātaḥ) - a blow;” ते (te) - to you;” ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - brāhmaṇa;” वा (vā) - or;” हतः (hataḥ) - killed;” त्वया (tvayā) - by you;” युद्धे (yuddhe) - in battle;” पराजितः (parājitaḥ) - defeated;” वा (vā) - or;” असि (asi) - you are;” गतश्रीः (gataśrīḥ) - one whose glory has left;” इव (iva) - like;” लक्ष्यसे (lakṣyase) - you appear;”;]
(Without heroic offspring, a blow befell you, or a brāhmaṇa was killed by you. In battle, defeated you are or, you appear like one whose glory has departed.)
Either you have suffered a blow for having no heroic descendants, or you are one by whom a brāhmaṇa has been killed. In battle, you have been defeated or, like one bereft of glory, you appear so. (16-9-5)
न त्वा प्रत्यभिजानामि किमिदं भरतर्षभ। श्रोतव्यं चेन्मया पार्थ क्षिप्रमाख्यातुमर्हसि ॥१६-९-६॥
na tvā pratyabhijānāmi kim idaṁ bharatarṣabha। śrotavyaṁ cen mayā pārtha kṣipram ākhyātum arhasi॥16-9-6॥

(Not you I recognize; what is this, O bull of the Bharatas? If to be heard by me, O Pārtha, quickly to tell you ought.)
I do not recognize you; what is this, O foremost of the Bharatas? If I should hear about it, O Pārtha, you ought to tell me quickly. (16-9-6)

Arjuna said.
यः स मेधवपुः श्रीमान्बृहत्पङ्कजलोचनः। स कृष्णः सह रामेण त्यक्त्वा देहं दिवं गतः ॥१६-९-७॥
yaḥ sa medhavapuḥ śrīmān bṛhat paṅkaja-locanaḥ। sa kṛṣṇaḥ saha rāmeṇa tyaktvā dehaṃ divaṃ gataḥ॥16-9-7॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; स (sa) - that; मेधवपुः (medhavapuḥ) - having an intelligent form; श्रीमान् (śrīmān) - prosperous; बृहत् (bṛhat) - great; पङ्कज (paṅkaja) - lotus; लोचनः (locanaḥ) - eyed; स (sa) - that; कृष्णः (kṛṣṇaḥ) - Kṛṣṇa; सह (saha) - with; रामेण (rāmeṇa) - with Rāma; त्यक्त्वा (tyaktvā) - having abandoned; देहम् (deham) - body; दिवम् (divam) - heaven; गतः (gataḥ) - gone;]
(Who, that intelligent-formed, prosperous, great lotus-eyed, that Kṛṣṇa, with Rāma, having abandoned the body, went to heaven.)
That Kṛṣṇa, who was intelligent, prosperous, and had great lotus-like eyes, together with Rāma, gave up his body and ascended to heaven. (16-9-7)
मौसले वृष्णिवीराणां विनाशो ब्रह्मशापजः। बभूव वीरान्तकरः प्रभासे रोमहर्षणः ॥१६-९-८॥
mausale vṛṣṇivīrāṇāṃ vināśo brahmaśāpajaḥ। babhūva vīrāntakaraḥ prabhāse romaharṣaṇaḥ ॥16-9-8॥

(In the Mausala (event), of the Vṛṣṇi heroes destruction born of the Brahman's curse arose, slayer of heroes, at Prabhāsa, horripilating.)
During the Mausala episode, the destruction of the Vṛṣṇi heroes, born from a Brahman's curse, arose at Prabhāsa, an event that was the slayer of heroes and caused horripilation. (16-9-8)
ये ते शूरा महात्मानः सिंहदर्पा महाबलाः। भोजवृष्ण्यन्धका ब्रह्मन्नन्योन्यं तैर्हतं युधि ॥१६-९-९॥
ye te śūrā mahātmānaḥ siṃhadarpā mahābalāḥ। bhojavṛṣṇyandhakā brahman anyonyaṃ tair hataṃ yudhi ॥16-9-9॥
[ये (ye) - these; ते (te) - those; शूरा (śūrāḥ) - heroes; महात्मानः (mahātmānaḥ) - great-souled ones; सिंहदर्पा (siṃhadarpāḥ) - having the pride/arrogance of a lion; महाबलाः (mahābalāḥ) - possessing great strength; भोजवृष्ण्यन्धका (bhojavṛṣṇyandhakāḥ) - the Bhojas, Vṛṣṇis, and Andhakas; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brahman; अन्योन्यं (anyonyam) - one another; तैः (taiḥ) - by them; हतं (hataṃ) - (was) slain; युधि (yudhi) - in battle;]
(These those heroes, great-souled ones, lion-proud, great in strength, the Bhojas, Vṛṣṇis, and Andhakas, O Brahman, one another by them were slain in battle.)
O Brahman, those great-souled heroes, proud as lions and of mighty strength—the Bhojas, Vṛṣṇis, and Andhakas—slaughtered one another in battle. (16-9-9)
गदापरिघशक्तीनां सहाः परिघबाहवः। त एरकाभिर्निहताः पश्य कालस्य पर्ययम् ॥१६-९-१०॥
gadāparighaśaktīnāṃ sahāḥ parighabāhavaḥ। ta erakābhirnihatāḥ paśya kālasya paryayam॥16-9-10॥
[गदा (gadā) - mace;, परिघ (parigha) - iron club;, शक्तीनां (śaktīnāṃ) - of lances;, सहाः (sahāḥ) - strong;, परिघबाहवः (parighabāhavaḥ) - those with iron-club arms;, ते (te) - they;, एरकाभिः (erakābhiḥ) - by grass stems;, निहताः (nihatāḥ) - struck down;, पश्य (paśya) - see;, कालस्य (kālasya) - of Time;, पर्ययम् (paryayam) - change; १६-९-१० (16-9-10) - 16-9-10;]
(Mace, iron club, and lances strong, those with iron-club arms, they by grass stems struck down—see Time's change. (16-9-10))
Those powerful warriors, armed with maces, iron clubs, and lances—those with arms like iron clubs—have been struck down by mere grass stems; behold the turn of Time. (16-9-10)
हतं पञ्चशतं तेषां सहस्रं बाहुशालिनाम्। निधनं समनुप्राप्तं समासाद्येतरेतरम् ॥१६-९-११॥
hataṃ pañcaśataṃ teṣāṃ sahasraṃ bāhuśālinām। nidhanaṃ samanupraaptaṃ samāsādyetaretaram ॥16-9-11॥
[हतं (hataṃ) - killed; पञ्चशतं (pañcaśataṃ) - five hundred; तेषां (teṣāṃ) - of them; सहस्रं (sahasraṃ) - thousand; बाहुशालिनाम् (bāhuśālinām) - of the strong-armed; निधनं (nidhanaṃ) - death; समनुप्राप्तं (samanuprāptaṃ) - altogether reached; समासाद्य (samāsādya) - having approached; इतर–इतरम् (itara–itaram) - one another;]
(Killed five hundred of them, a thousand of the strong-armed, death altogether reached, having approached one another.)
Five hundred of them and a thousand strong-armed warriors were killed, all meeting their deaths as they confronted one another. (16-9-11)
पुनः पुनर्न मृश्यामि विनाशममितौजसाम्। चिन्तयानो यदूनां च कृष्णस्य च यशस्विनः ॥१६-९-१२॥
punaḥ punar na mṛśyāmi vināśam amita-ojasām। cintayan o yadūnām ca kṛṣṇasya ca yaśasvinaḥ॥16-9-12॥
[पुनः पुनः (punaḥ punaḥ) - again and again; न (na) - not; मृश्यामि (mṛśyāmi) - I can bear; विनाशम् (vināśam) - destruction; अमितौजसाम् (amita-ojasām) - of those of immeasurable energy; चिन्तयानः (cintayan o) - meditating upon; यदूनाम् (yadūnām) - of the Yadus; च (ca) - and; कृष्णस्य (kṛṣṇasya) - of Kṛṣṇa; च (ca) - and; यशस्विनः (yaśasvinaḥ) - the glorious;]
(Again and again, I cannot bear the destruction of those of immeasurable energy, meditating upon the Yadus and of Kṛṣṇa, the glorious.)
Again and again I cannot bear the destruction of those with immeasurable energy, thinking of the Yadus and also of glorious Kṛṣṇa. (16-9-12)
शोषणं सागरस्येव पर्वतस्येव चालनम्। नभसः पतनं चैव शैत्यमग्नेस्तथैव च ॥१६-९-१३॥
śoṣaṇaṃ sāgarasyeva parvatasyeva cālanam। nabhasaḥ patanaṃ caiva śaityam agnes tathaiva ca ॥16-9-13॥
[शोषणं (śoṣaṇam) - drying; destruction by evaporation; सागरस्य (sāgarasya) - of the ocean; इव (iva) - like; as; पर्वतस्य (parvatasya) - of the mountain; इव (iva) - like; as; चालनम् (cālanam) - shaking; moving; नभसः (nabhasaḥ) - of the sky; of the heavens; पतनं (patanam) - falling; descent; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; only; just; शैत्यं (śaityam) - coldness; chill; अग्नेः (agneḥ) - of fire; तथैव (tathaiva) - similarly; in the same way; च (ca) - and;]
(Drying of the ocean like, shaking of the mountain like, falling of the sky indeed and, coldness of fire similarly and.)
Just as the drying of the ocean, the shaking of a mountain, the falling of the sky, and the coldness of fire are impossible, so too (is this). (16-9-13)
अश्रद्धेयमहं मन्ये विनाशं शार्ङ्गधन्वनः। न चेह स्थातुमिच्छामि लोके कृष्णविनाकृतः ॥१६-९-१४॥
aśraddheyam ahaṃ manye vināśaṃ śārṅgadhanvanaḥ। na ca iha sthātum icchāmi loke kṛṣṇavinākṛtaḥ॥16-9-14॥
[अश्रद्धेयम् (aśraddheyam) - not believable; अहम् (aham) - I; मnye (manye) - think; विनाशम् (vināśam) - destruction; शार्ङ्गधन्वनः (śārṅgadhanvanaḥ) - of the wielder of Śārṅga-bow; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; इह (iha) - here; स्थातुम् (sthātum) - to remain; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I desire; लोके (loke) - in the world; कृष्णविना (kṛṣṇavinā) - without Kṛṣṇa; कृतः (kṛtaḥ) - made;]
(Not believable I think the destruction of the wielder of Śārṅga-bow; and not here to remain I desire in the world made without Kṛṣṇa.)
I do not believe in the destruction of the wielder of the Śārṅga bow; nor do I wish to remain in this world made bereft of Kṛṣṇa. (16-9-14)
इतः कष्टतरं चान्यच्छृणु तद्वै तपोधन। मनो मे दीर्यते येन चिन्तयानस्य वै मुहुः ॥१६-९-१५॥
itaḥ kaṣṭataraṃ ca anyat śṛṇu tat vai tapodhana। mano me dīryate yena cintayānasya vai muḥuḥ ॥16-9-15॥
[इतः (itaḥ) - from this; कष्टतरं (kaṣṭataraṃ) - more difficult; च (ca) - and; अन्यत् (anyat) - another; श्रुणु (śṛṇu) - hear; तत् (tat) - that; वै (vai) - indeed; तपोधन (tapodhana) - O ascetic (one rich in austerity); मनो (mano) - mind; मे (me) - my; दीर्यते (dīryate) - is torn; येन (yena) - by which; चिन्तयानस्य (cintayānasya) - while thinking; वै (vai) - indeed; मुहुः (muḥuḥ) - constantly;]
(From this, more difficult and another, hear that indeed, O ascetic; mind my is torn by which while thinking indeed constantly.)
O ascetic, hear from me something yet more difficult than this; my mind is constantly torn apart by that, as I keep thinking on it. (16-9-15)
पश्यतो वृष्णिदाराश्च मम ब्रह्मन्सहस्रशः। आभीरैरनुसृत्याजौ हृताः पञ्चनदालयैः ॥१६-९-१६॥
paśyato vṛṣṇi-dārāś ca mama brahman sahasraśaḥ। ābhīraiḥ anusṛtya ājau hṛtāḥ pañcanadālayaiḥ॥16-9-16॥
[पश्यतः (paśyataḥ) - while seeing; while (I was) watching; वृष्णि-दाराः (vṛṣṇi-dārāḥ) - wives of the Vṛṣṇi (clan); च (ca) - and; मम (mama) - my; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brahman; सहस्रशः (sahasraśaḥ) - by thousands; in thousands; आभीरैः (ābhīraiḥ) - by the Ābhīras; अनुसृत्य (anusṛtya) - having pursued; आजौ (ājau) - in the battle; हृताः (hṛtāḥ) - taken away; abducted; पञ्चनदालयैः (pañcanadālayaiḥ) - by the inhabitants of Pañcanada (Punjab);]
(While (I was) seeing, the wives of the Vṛṣṇis and mine, O Brahman, by thousands, having been pursued by the Ābhīras in battle, were taken away by the inhabitants of Pañcanada.)
O Brahman, while I was watching, thousands of the Vṛṣṇis' wives and mine were pursued in battle and taken away by the Ābhīras, the people of Pañcanada. (16-9-16)
धनुरादाय तत्राहं नाशकं तस्य पूरणे। यथा पुरा च मे वीर्यं भुजयोर्न तथाभवत् ॥१६-९-१७॥
dhanur-ādāya tatrāhaṃ nāśakaṃ tasya pūraṇe। yathā purā ca me vīryaṃ bhujayor na tathābhavat ॥16-9-17॥
[धनुः (dhanuḥ) - bow; आदाय (ādāya) - having taken; तत्र (tatra) - there; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; नाशकम् (nāśakam) - unable (to accomplish); तस्य (tasya) - its; पूरणे (pūraṇe) - in the drawing/filling (of the bow); यथा (yathā) - as; पुरा (purā) - formerly; च (ca) - and; मे (me) - my; वीर्यम् (vīryam) - strength; भुजयोः (bhujayoḥ) - in the arms; न (na) - not; तथा (tathā) - in that way; अभवत् (abhavat) - was;]
(Having taken the bow there, I was unable in the drawing of it. As formerly, and my strength in the arms was not in that way.)
Having taken up the bow there, I was unable to string it; my strength in the arms was not as it was formerly. (16-9-17)
अस्त्राणि मे प्रनष्टानि विविधानि महामुने। शराश्च क्षयमापन्नाः क्षणेनैव समन्ततः ॥१६-९-१८॥
astrāṇi me pranaṣṭāni vividhāni mahāmune। śarāśca kṣayamāpannāḥ kṣaṇenaiva samantataḥ॥16-9-18॥
[अस्त्राणि (astrāṇi) - missiles; मे (me) - my; प्रनष्टानि (pranaṣṭāni) - destroyed; विविधानि (vividhāni) - various; महामुने (mahāmune) - O great sage; शराः (śarāḥ) - arrows; च (ca) - and; क्षयम् (kṣayam) - ruin; आपन्नाः (āpannāḥ) - have attained; क्षणेन (kṣaṇena) - in a moment; एव (eva) - indeed; समन्ततः (samantataḥ) - on all sides;]
(Missiles my destroyed various O great sage. And arrows ruin have attained in a moment indeed on all sides.)
O great sage, my various missiles have been destroyed, and my arrows have perished on all sides in a moment. (16-9-18)
पुरुषश्चाप्रमेयात्मा शङ्खचक्रगदाधरः। चतुर्भुजः पीतवासा श्यामः पद्मायतेक्षणः ॥१६-९-१९॥
puruṣaś cāprameyātmā śaṅkhacakragadādharaḥ| caturbhujaḥ pītavāsā śyāmaḥ padmāyatekṣaṇaḥ ॥16-9-19॥

(The man and of immeasurable self, holder of conch, disc, and mace, four-armed, clad in yellow garment, dark-hued, with lotus-like eyes.)
He is the man of immeasurable self, holding conch, disc, and mace; four-armed, wearing a yellow garment, dark in color, and with lotus-like eyes. (16-9-19)
यः स याति पुरस्तान्मे रथस्य सुमहाद्युतिः। प्रदहन्रिपुसैन्यानि न पश्याम्यहमद्य तम् ॥१६-९-२०॥
yaḥ sa yāti purastān me rathasya sumahādyutiḥ. pradahan ripu-sainyāni na paśyāmy aham adya tam ॥16-9-20॥

(Who he goes in front my chariot of great splendour, burning enemy armies, not I see today him.)
That one who goes in front of my chariot, blazing with great splendour, burning the enemy armies—I do not see him today. (16-9-20)
येन पूर्वं प्रदग्धानि शत्रुसैन्यानि तेजसा। शरैर्गाण्डीवनिर्मुक्तैरहं पश्चाद्व्यनाशयम् ॥१६-९-२१॥
yena pūrvaṃ pradagdhāni śatrusainyāni tejasā। śarairgāṇḍīvanirmuktaira haṃ paścād vyanāśayam ॥16-9-21॥

तमपश्यन्विषीदामि घूर्णामीव च सत्तम। परिनिर्विण्णचेताश्च शान्तिं नोपलभेऽपि च ॥१६-९-२२॥
tam apaśyan viṣīdāmi ghūrṇāmi iva ca sattama। parinirviṇṇa-cetāḥ ca śāntim na upalabhe 'pi ca॥16-9-22॥

(Him not seeing, I am despondent, I am bewildered as if, and O best one; with completely disheartened mind and peace not I obtain even and.)
Not seeing him, O best one, I am despondent and feel as if I am bewildered; with a completely disheartened mind, I do not even find peace. (16-9-22)
विना जनार्दनं वीरं नाहं जीवितुमुत्सहे। श्रुत्वैव हि गतं विष्णुं ममापि मुमुहुर्दिशः ॥१६-९-२३॥
vinā janārdanaṁ vīraṁ nāhaṁ jīvitum utsahe। śrutvaiva hi gataṁ viṣṇuṁ mamāpi mumuḥur diśaḥ॥16-9-23॥
[विना (vinā) - without; जनार्दनं (janārdanam) - Janārdana; वीरं (vīram) - hero; नाहं (na aham) - not I; जीवितुम् (jīvitum) - to live; उत्सहे (utsahe) - am able; श्रुत्वैव (śrutva eva) - having just heard; हि (hi) - indeed; गतं (gatam) - has gone; विष्णुं (viṣṇum) - Viṣṇu; ममापि (mama api) - of me also; मुमुहुर्दिशः (mumuḥuḥ diśaḥ) - the directions became faint;]
(Without Janārdana the hero, not I to live am able; having just heard indeed has gone Viṣṇu, of me also the directions became faint.)
Without Janārdana the hero, I am not able to live; just hearing that Viṣṇu has departed, for me too the directions have become faint. (16-9-23)
प्रनष्टज्ञातिवीर्यस्य शून्यस्य परिधावतः। उपदेष्टुं मम श्रेयो भवानर्हति सत्तम ॥१६-९-२४॥
pranaṣṭajñātivīryasya śūnyasya paridhāvataḥ। upadeṣṭuṃ mama śreyo bhavān arhati sattama ॥16-9-24॥

(Of one whose relatives and strength are lost, who is bereft, who wanders around, to instruct my welfare, you, O best one, are worthy.)
O best of men, you are worthy to instruct me for my welfare, as I am bereft, having lost my relatives and strength, and wandering helplessly. (16-9-24)

brahmaśāpavinirdagdhā vṛṣṇyandhakamahārathāḥ। vinaṣṭāḥ kuruśārdūla na tāñśocitumarhasi ॥16-9-25॥
[ब्रह्मशापविनिर्दग्धाः (brahmaśāpavinirdagdhāḥ) - burnt by the curse of Brahman; वृष्ण्यन्धकमहारथाः (vṛṣṇyandhakamahārathāḥ) - the great warriors of the Vṛṣṇis and Andhakas; विनष्टाः (vinaṣṭāḥ) - destroyed; कुरुशार्दूल (kuruśārdūla) - O tiger among the Kurus; न (na) - not; तान् (tān) - them; शोचितुम् (śocitum) - to grieve; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought;]
(Burnt by the curse of Brahman, the great warriors of the Vṛṣṇis and Andhakas are destroyed, O tiger among the Kurus; you ought not to grieve for them.)
O tiger among the Kurus, the great warriors of the Vṛṣṇis and Andhakas were destroyed, burned by the curse of Brahman; you should not grieve for them. (16-9-25)
भवितव्यं तथा तद्धि दिष्टमेतन्महात्मनाम्। उपेक्षितं च कृष्णेन शक्तेनापि व्यपोहितुम् ॥१६-९-२६॥
bhavitavyaṃ tathā taddhi diṣṭametadmahātmanām। upekṣitaṃ ca kṛṣṇena śaktenāpi vyapohitum ॥16-9-26॥
[भवितव्यं (bhavitavyam) - that which must happen; तथा (tathā) - thus; तत् (tat) - that; हि (hi) - indeed; दिष्टम् (diṣṭam) - fate; destiny; एतत् (etat) - this; महात्मनाम् (mahātmanām) - of the great-souled; उपेक्षितं (upekṣitam) - neglected; overlooked; च (ca) - and; कृष्णेन (kṛṣṇena) - by Kṛṣṇa; शक्तेन (śaktena) - by the capable one; अपि (api) - even; व्यपोहितुम् (vyapohitum) - to avert; to remove;]
(That which must happen, thus that indeed is fate, this of the great-souled. And (it is) neglected by Kṛṣṇa, even by the capable one, to avert.)
What must happen—such indeed is the destiny of the great-souled; this has been overlooked even by Kṛṣṇa, though he was able to avert it. (16-9-26)
त्रैलोक्यमपि कृष्णो हि कृत्स्नं स्थावरजङ्गमम्। प्रसहेदन्यथा कर्तुं किमु शापं मनीषिणाम् ॥१६-९-२७॥
trailokyam api kṛṣṇo hi kṛtsnaṃ sthāvarajaṅgamam। prasahen anyathā kartuṃ kimu śāpaṃ manīṣiṇām ॥16-9-27॥
[त्रैलोक्यम् (trailokyam) - the three worlds; अपि (api) - even; कृष्णः (kṛṣṇaḥ) - Kṛṣṇa; हि (hi) - indeed; कृत्स्नम् (kṛtsnam) - entire; स्थावरजङ्गमम् (sthāvarajaṅgamam) - movable and immovable (beings); प्रसहेत् (prasahen) - could overpower; अन्यथा (anyathā) - in another way; कर्तुम् (kartum) - to do; किमु (kimu) - how much more; शापम् (śāpam) - curse; मनीषिणाम् (manīṣiṇām) - of the wise;]
(Even the three worlds Kṛṣṇa indeed, the entire movable and immovable beings, could overpower in another way to do; how much more (so) the curse of the wise.)
Kṛṣṇa indeed could, if he wished, overpower and change the entire three worlds, with all their movable and immovable beings; how much more (could he) alter the curse of the wise. (16-9-27)
रथस्य पुरतो याति यः स चक्रगदाधरः। तव स्नेहात्पुराणर्षिर्वासुदेवश्चतुर्भुजः ॥१६-९-२८॥
rathasya purato yāti yaḥ sa cakragadādharaḥ। tava snehāt purāṇarṣir vāsudevaś caturbhujaḥ॥16-9-28॥
[रथस्य (rathasya) - of the chariot; पुरतः (purataḥ) - in front; याति (yāti) - goes; यः (yaḥ) - who; सः (saḥ) - he; चक्रगदाधरः (cakragadādharaḥ) - wielder of discus and mace; तव (tava) - your; स्नेहात् (snehāt) - from affection; पुराणर्षिः (purāṇarṣiḥ) - the ancient sage; वासुदेवः (vāsudevaḥ) - Vāsudeva; चतुर्भुजः (caturbhujaḥ) - four-armed;]
(Of the chariot in front goes who, he the wielder of discus and mace. From your affection, the ancient sage Vāsudeva, four-armed.)
He who goes in front of the chariot, who is the wielder of the discus and mace, is Vāsudeva, the four-armed ancient sage, out of affection for you. (16-9-28)
कृत्वा भारावतरणं पृथिव्याः पृथुलोचनः। मोक्षयित्वा जगत्सर्वं गतः स्वस्थानमुत्तमम् ॥१६-९-२९॥
kṛtvā bhārāvataraṇaṃ pṛthivyāḥ pṛthulocanaḥ। mokṣayitvā jagat sarvaṃ gataḥ svasthānam uttamam ॥16-9-29॥
[कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; भारावतरणम् (bhāra-avataraṇam) - the removal of the burden; पृथिव्याः (pṛthivyāḥ) - of the earth; पृथुलोचनः (pṛthu-locanaḥ) - the broad-eyed one; मोक्षयित्वा (mokṣayitvā) - having liberated; जगत् (jagat) - the world; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; गतः (gataḥ) - went; स्वस्थानम् (sva-sthānam) - his own abode; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - supreme;]
(Having done the removal of the burden of the earth, the broad-eyed one, having liberated all the world, went to his own supreme abode.)
After removing the earth's burden, the broad-eyed one liberated all the world and departed to his own supreme abode. (16-9-29)
त्वया त्विह महत्कर्म देवानां पुरुषर्षभ। कृतं भीमसहायेन यमाभ्यां च महाभुज ॥१६-९-३०॥
tvayā tviha mahatkarma devānāṁ puruṣarṣabha। kṛtaṁ bhīmasahāyena yamābhyāṁ ca mahābhuja ॥16-9-30॥
[त्वया (tvayā) - by you; तु (tu) - but; इह (iha) - here; महत्कर्म (mahat-karma) - great deed; देवानाम् (devānām) - of the gods; पुरुषर्षभ (puruṣa-ṛṣabha) - bull among men; कृतम् (kṛtam) - was done; भीमसहायेन (bhīma-sahāyena) - with Bhīma as helper; यमाभ्याम् (yamābhyām) - with the two sons of Yama (i.e., Nakula and Sahadeva); च (ca) - and; महाभुज (mahā-bhuja) - mighty-armed one;]
(By you but here a great deed of the gods, O bull among men, was done with Bhīma as helper and with the two sons of Yama, O mighty-armed one.)
O mighty-armed one, a great deed for the gods has been accomplished here by you, aided by Bhīma and by the two sons of Yama, O best of men. (16-9-30)
कृतकृत्यांश्च वो मन्ये संसिद्धान्कुरुपुङ्गव। गमनं प्राप्तकालं च तद्धि श्रेयो मतं मम ॥१६-९-३१॥
kṛtakṛtyāṁś ca vo manye saṁsiddhān kurupuṅgava। gamanaṁ prāptakālaṁ ca tad dhi śreyo mataṁ mama॥16-9-31॥
[कृतकृत्यान् (kṛtakṛtyān) - those who have accomplished their duty; च (ca) - and; वः (vaḥ) - you (plural); मन्ये (manye) - I consider; संसिद्धान् (saṁsiddhān) - those who have attained completeness; कुरुपुङ्गव (kurupuṅgava) - O best of the Kurus; गमनम् (gamanaṁ) - departure; प्राप्तकालम् (prāptakālam) - whose time has come; च (ca) - and; तत् (tat) - that; हि (hi) - indeed; श्रेयः (śreyaḥ) - highest good; मतम् (matam) - is regarded; मम (mama) - by me;]
(Those who have accomplished their duty and you I consider as those who are fulfilled, O best of the Kurus; departure whose time has come and that indeed is regarded as the highest good by me.)
O best of the Kurus, I consider you as those who have accomplished their duty and attained completeness; your timely departure is, in my view, indeed the highest good. (16-9-31)
बलं बुद्धिश्च तेजश्च प्रतिपत्तिश्च भारत। भवन्ति भवकालेषु विपद्यन्ते विपर्यये ॥१६-९-३२॥
balaṃ buddhiś ca tejaś ca pratipattiś ca bhārata। bhavanti bhavakāleṣu vipadyante viparyaye ॥16-9-32॥
[बलम् (balaṃ) - strength; बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - intellect; च (ca) - and; तेजः (tejaḥ) - vigor; च (ca) - and; प्रतिपत्तिः (pratipattiḥ) - resolve; च (ca) - and; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; भवन्ति (bhavanti) - arise; भवकालेषु (bhavakāleṣu) - in times of prosperity; विपद्यन्ते (vipadyante) - perish; विपर्यये (viparyaye) - in adversity;]
(Strength, intellect, vigor, and resolve, O Bhārata, arise in times of prosperity, perish in adversity.)
O Bhārata, strength, intellect, vigor, and resolve flourish during prosperous times but fail during adversity. (16-9-32)
कालमूलमिदं सर्वं जगद्बीजं धनञ्जय। काल एव समादत्ते पुनरेव यदृच्छया ॥१६-९-३३॥
kālamūlam idaṁ sarvaṁ jagadbījaṁ dhanañjaya। kāla eva samādatte punar eva yadṛcchayā ॥16-9-33॥
[कालमूलम् (kālamūlam) - rooted in time; इदं (idaṁ) - this; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; जगद्बीजम् (jagadbījam) - seed of the world; धनञ्जय (dhanañjaya) - O Dhanañjaya; काल (kāla) - time; एव (eva) - indeed; समादत्ते (samādatte) - takes away; पुनः (punar) - again; एव (eva) - indeed; यदृच्छया (yadṛcchayā) - at will;]
(Rooted in time, this all, seed of the world, O Dhanañjaya. Time indeed takes away; again indeed, at will.)
O Dhanañjaya, all this, the seed of the world, is rooted in time. Indeed, time itself takes it away, and again, at its own will. (16-9-33)
स एव बलवान्भूत्वा पुनर्भवति दुर्बलः। स एवेशश्च भूत्वेह परैराज्ञाप्यते पुनः ॥१६-९-३४॥
sa eva balavān bhūtvā punar bhavati durbalaḥ। sa eva īśaś ca bhūtvā iha paraiḥ ājñāpyate punaḥ॥16-9-34॥
[स (sa) - he; एव (eva) - indeed; बलवान् (balavān) - strong; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; पुनः (punar) - again; भवति (bhavati) - becomes; दुर्बलः (durbalaḥ) - weak; स (sa) - he; एव (eva) - indeed; ईशः (īśaḥ) - lord; च (ca) - and; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; इह (iha) - here; परैः (paraiḥ) - by others; आज्ञाप्यते (ājñāpyate) - is ordered; पुनः (punaḥ) - again;]
(He indeed, having become strong, again becomes weak. He indeed (having) become lord, here is ordered by others again. (16-9-34))
That very person, after being strong, again becomes weak. That very person, after becoming lord here, is again commanded by others. (16-9-34)
कृतकृत्यानि चास्त्राणि गतान्यद्य यथागतम्। पुनरेष्यन्ति ते हस्तं यदा कालो भविष्यति ॥१६-९-३५॥
kṛtakṛtyāni cāstrāṇi gatānyadya yathāgatam। punareṣyanti te hastaṃ yadā kālo bhaviṣyati ॥16-9-35॥
[कृतकृत्यानि (kṛtakṛtyāni) - their purpose fulfilled; च (ca) - and; अस्त्राणि (astrāṇi) - weapons; गतानि (gatāni) - gone; अद्य (adya) - today; यथा (yathā) - in the manner; आगतम् (āgatam) - as they came; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; एष्यन्ति (eṣyanti) - will come; ते (te) - they; हस्तं (hastaṃ) - hand; यदा (yadā) - when; कालः (kālaḥ) - time; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be;]
(Having fulfilled their purpose, and weapons, gone today as they came, will come again to your hand when time will be.)
The weapons, having fulfilled their purpose, have gone today as they came; they will again return to your hand when the time comes. (16-9-35)
कालो गन्तुं गतिं मुख्यां भवतामपि भारत। एतच्छ्रेयो हि वो मन्ये परमं भरतर्षभ ॥१६-९-३६॥
kālo gantuṃ gatiṃ mukhyāṃ bhavatām api bhārata। etac chreyo hi vo manye paramaṃ bharatarṣabha ॥16-9-36॥
[कालः (kālaḥ) - time; गन्तुम् (gantum) - to go; गतिम् (gatim) - course; मुख्याम् (mukhyām) - principal; भवताम् (bhavatām) - of you (plural); अपि (api) - even; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; एतत् (etat) - this; श्रेयः (śreyaḥ) - the best; हि (hi) - indeed; वः (vaḥ) - for you; मन्ये (manye) - I think; परम् (param) - supreme; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of Bharatas;]
(Time, to go, principal course, even of you, O Bhārata. This, the best, indeed, for you, I think, supreme, O best of Bharatas.)
O Bhārata, even for you, time is to pursue the principal course. I consider this to be indeed your supreme good, O best of Bharatas. (16-9-36)
एतद्वचनमाज्ञाय व्यासस्यामिततेजसः। अनुज्ञातो ययौ पार्थो नगरं नागसाह्वयम् ॥१६-९-३७॥
etadvacanam ājñāya vyāsasya amita-tejasaḥ। anujñātaḥ yayau pārthaḥ nagaram nāga-sāhvayam॥16-9-37॥
[एतद्वचनम् (etad-vacanam) - this utterance; आज्ञाय (ājñāya) - having understood; व्यासस्य (vyāsasya) - of Vyāsa; अमिततेजसः (amita-tejasaḥ) - of immeasurable radiance; अनुज्ञातः (anujñātaḥ) - having been permitted; ययौ (yayau) - he went; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - Pārtha; नगरम् (nagaram) - the city; नागसाह्वयम् (nāga-sāhvayam) - named Nāgasāhvaya;]
(Having understood this utterance of Vyāsa of immeasurable radiance, having been permitted, Pārtha went to the city named Nāgasāhvaya.)
After understanding this statement of Vyāsa, who possesses immeasurable energy, and after being permitted, Pārtha went to the city called Nāgasāhvaya. (16-9-37)
प्रविश्य च पुरीं वीरः समासाद्य युधिष्ठिरम्। आचष्ट तद्यथावृत्तं वृष्ण्यन्धकजनं प्रति ॥१६-९-३८॥
praviśya ca purīṃ vīraḥ samāsādya yudhiṣṭhiram। ācaṣṭa tadyathāvṛttaṃ vṛṣṇy-andhaka-janaṃ prati ॥16-9-38॥
[प्रविश्य (praviśya) - having entered; च (ca) - and; पुरीं (purīṃ) - city; वीरः (vīraḥ) - hero; समासाद्य (samāsādya) - having approached; युधिष्ठिरम् (yudhiṣṭhiram) - Yudhiṣṭhira; आचष्ट (ācaṣṭa) - reported; तत् (tat) - that; यथावृत्तं (yathāvṛttam) - as it had occurred; वृष्ण्यन्धकजनं (vṛṣṇy-andhaka-janam) - Vṛṣṇi and Andhaka people; प्रति (prati) - concerning;]
(Having entered the city and having approached Yudhiṣṭhira, the hero reported that as it had occurred concerning the Vṛṣṇi and Andhaka people.)
