एवं वृष्ण्यन्धककुले श्रुत्वा मौसलमाहवम्। पाण्डवाः किमकुर्वन्त तथा कृष्णे दिवं गते ॥१७-१-१॥
evaṁ vṛṣṇy-andhaka-kule śrutvā mausalam-āhavam। pāṇḍavāḥ kim akurvanta tathā kṛṣṇe divaṁ gate ॥17-1-1॥

(Thus, in the Vṛṣṇi and Andhaka families, having heard of the Mausala battle, the Pāṇḍavas—what did (they) do, also when Kṛṣṇa had gone to heaven?)
Thus, after hearing of the Mausala battle in the Vṛṣṇi and Andhaka families and after Kṛṣṇa had departed to heaven, what did the Pāṇḍavas do? (17-1-1)

श्रुत्वैव कौरवो राजा वृष्णीनां कदनं महत्। प्रस्थाने मतिमाधाय वाक्यमर्जुनमब्रवीत् ॥१७-१-२॥
śrutvaiva kauravo rājā vṛṣṇīnāṃ kadanaṃ mahat। prasthāne matim ādhāya vākyam arjunam abravīt ॥17-1-2॥
[श्रुत्वा एव (śrutvā eva) - having heard indeed; कौरवः (kauravaḥ) - the Kaurava; राजा (rājā) - king; वृष्णीनाम् (vṛṣṇīnām) - of the Vṛṣṇis; कदनं (kadanaṃ) - slaughter; महत् (mahat) - great; प्रस्थाने (prasthāne) - for departure; मतिम् (matim) - mind; आधाय (ādhāya) - having set; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - speech; अर्जुनम् (arjunam) - to Arjuna; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke;]
(Having heard indeed, the Kaurava king, of the great slaughter of the Vṛṣṇis, for departure, having set his mind, speech to Arjuna spoke.)
As soon as he heard of the great slaughter of the Vṛṣṇis, the Kaurava king, setting his mind on departure, spoke to Arjuna as follows. (17-1-2)
कालः पचति भूतानि सर्वाण्येव महामते। कर्मन्यासमहं मन्ये त्वमपि द्रष्टुमर्हसि ॥१७-१-३॥
kālaḥ pacati bhūtāni sarvāṇyeva mahāmate। karmanyāsamahaṃ manye tvamapi draṣṭumarhasi ॥17-1-3॥
[कालः (kālaḥ) - time; (nominative singular); पचति (pacati) - cooks; ripens; matures; (third person singular present); भूतानि (bhūtāni) - beings; creatures; (accusative plural); सर्वाणि (sarvāṇi) - all; (accusative plural neuter); एव (eva) - indeed; only; महामते (mahāmate) - O great-minded one; (vocative singular); कर्मन्यासम् (karmanyāsam) - deposit/placing of karma; cessation of action; (accusative singular); अहम् (aham) - I; मन्ये (manye) - think; consider; (first person singular present); त्वम् (tvam) - you; अपि (api) - also; even; द्रष्टुम् (draṣṭum) - to see; to observe; (infinitive); अर्हसि (arhasi) - are worthy; ought; (second person singular present);]
(Time cooks beings indeed all, O great-minded one. I think (the) cessation of action you also to see are worthy.)
O great-minded one, time matures all beings. I consider that you also ought to see the cessation of action. (17-1-3)
इत्युक्तः स तु कौन्तेयः कालः काल इति ब्रुवन्। अन्वपद्यत तद्वाक्यं भ्रातुर्ज्येष्ठस्य वीर्यवान् ॥१७-१-४॥
ity-uktaḥ sa tu kaunteyaḥ kālaḥ kāla iti bruvan। anvapadyata tad-vākyaṃ bhrātuḥ jyeṣṭhasya vīryavān॥17-1-4॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - addressed; स (sa) - he; तु (tu) - but; कौन्तेयः (kaunteyaḥ) - the son of Kunti; कालः (kālaḥ) - Time; काल (kāla) - Time; इति (iti) - thus; ब्रुवन् (bruvan) - speaking; अन्वपद्यत (anvapadyata) - followed; तद्वाक्यं (tad-vākyaṃ) - that statement; भ्रातुः (bhrātuḥ) - of (his) brother; ज्येष्ठस्य (jyeṣṭhasya) - elder; वीर्यवान् (vīryavān) - mighty;]
(Thus addressed, he but the son of Kunti, Time, "Time" thus speaking, followed that statement of (his) brother, elder, mighty.)
Thus addressed, the mighty son of Kunti, speaking "Time, Time", followed the command of his elder brother. (17-1-4)
अर्जुनस्य मतं ज्ञात्वा भीमसेनो यमौ तथा। अन्वपद्यन्त तद्वाक्यं यदुक्तं सव्यसाचिना ॥१७-१-५॥
arjunasya mataṃ jñātvā bhīmaseno yamau tathā। anvapadyanta tadvākyaṃ yaduktaṃ savyasācinā ॥17-1-5॥
[अर्जुनस्य (arjunasya) - of Arjuna; मतं (mataṃ) - opinion; ज्ञात्वा (jñātvā) - having known; भीमसेनः (bhīmasenaḥ) - Bhīmasena; यमौ (yamau) - the (two) sons of Yama (i.e., Nakula and Sahadeva); तथा (tathā) - likewise; अन्वपद्यन्त (anvapadyanta) - followed; तद्वाक्यं (tadvākyaṃ) - that statement; यत् (yat) - which; उक्तं (uktaṃ) - spoken; सव्यसाचिना (savyasācinā) - by Savyasācin (Arjuna);]
(Of Arjuna the opinion having known, Bhīmasena, the (two) sons of Yama likewise, followed that statement which was spoken by Savyasācin (Arjuna).)
Having understood Arjuna's opinion, Bhīmasena and the twin sons of Yama likewise followed the statement made by Savyasācin (Arjuna). (17-1-5)
ततो युयुत्सुमानाय्य प्रव्रजन्धर्मकाम्यया। राज्यं परिददौ सर्वं वैश्यापुत्रे युधिष्ठिरः ॥१७-१-६॥
tato yuyutsumānāyya pravrajandharmakāmyayā। rājyaṃ paridadau sarvaṃ vaiśyāputre yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ॥17-1-6॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; युयुत्सुमानाय्य (yuyutsumānāyya) - to Yuyutsu; प्रव्रजन् (pravrajan) - departing; धर्मकाम्यया (dharmakāmyayā) - with desire for dharma; राज्यम् (rājyam) - kingdom; परिददौ (paridadau) - he gave over; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; वैश्यापुत्रे (vaiśyāputre) - to the son of a Vaiśya; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhiṣṭhira;]
(Then, to Yuyutsu, departing with desire for dharma, the kingdom all he gave over, to the son of a Vaiśya, Yudhiṣṭhira.)
Then Yudhiṣṭhira, desiring dharma and departing, handed over the entire kingdom to Yuyutsu, the son of a Vaiśya. (17-1-6)
अभिषिच्य स्वराज्ये तु तं राजानं परिक्षितम्। दुःखार्तश्चाब्रवीद्राजा सुभद्रां पाण्डवाग्रजः ॥१७-१-७॥
abhiṣicya svarājye tu taṁ rājānaṁ parikṣitam। duḥkhārtaś cābravīd rājā subhadrāṁ pāṇḍavāgrajaḥ ॥17-1-7॥
[अभिषिच्य (abhiṣicya) - after anointing; स्वराज्ये (svarājye) - in own kingdom; तु (tu) - but; तं (taṁ) - him; राजानं (rājānaṁ) - king; परिक्षितम् (parikṣitam) - Parīkṣit; दुःखार्तः (duḥkhārtaḥ) - afflicted by sorrow; च (ca) - and; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke; राजा (rājā) - the king; सुभद्रां (subhadrāṁ) - to Subhadrā; पाण्डवाग्रजः (pāṇḍavāgrajaḥ) - the eldest of the Pāṇḍavas;]
(After anointing that king Parīkṣit in his own kingdom but, afflicted by sorrow and the king spoke to Subhadrā, the eldest of the Pāṇḍavas.)
But after anointing King Parīkṣit in his own kingdom, the eldest of the Pāṇḍavas, afflicted by sorrow, spoke to Subhadrā. (17-1-7)
एष पुत्रस्य ते पुत्रः कुरुराजो भविष्यति। यदूनां परिशेषश्च वज्रो राजा कृतश्च ह ॥१७-१-८॥
eṣa putrasya te putraḥ kururājo bhaviṣyati। yadūnāṃ pariśeṣaś ca vajro rājā kṛtaś ca ha ॥17-1-8॥
[एष (eṣa) - this; पुत्रस्य (putrasya) - of the son; ते (te) - your; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; कुरुराजः (kururājaḥ) - Kuru king; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be; यदूनाम् (yadūnām) - of the Yadus; परिशेषः (pariśeṣaḥ) - the remnant; च (ca) - and; वज्रः (vajraḥ) - Vajra; राजा (rājā) - king; कृतः (kṛtaḥ) - made; च (ca) - and; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(This of the son your son Kuru king will be. Of the Yadus the remnant and Vajra king made and indeed.)
This son of your son will be the king of the Kurus. Of the Yadus, the remnant Vajra has indeed been made king. (17-1-8)
परिक्षिद्धास्तिनपुरे शक्रप्रस्थे तु यादवः। वज्रो राजा त्वया रक्ष्यो मा चाधर्मे मनः कृथाः ॥१७-१-९॥
parikṣiddhāstinapure śakraprasthe tu yādavaḥ। vajro rājā tvayā rakṣyo mā cādharme manaḥ kṛthāḥ॥17-1-9॥
[परिक्षित् (parikṣit) - Parikṣit; (proper noun, name of a king); हास्तिनपुरे (hāstinapure) - in Hāstinapura; (locative singular); शक्रप्रस्थे (śakraprasthe) - in Śakraprastha; (locative singular); तु (tu) - but; यादवः (yādavaḥ) - the Yādava (descendant of Yadu; here, Kṛṣṇa's lineage or Vajra, contextually); वज्रः (vajraḥ) - Vajra; (proper noun, grandson of Kṛṣṇa); राजा (rājā) - king; (nominative singular); त्वया (tvayā) - by you; (instrumental singular); रक्ष्यः (rakṣyaḥ) - to be protected; must be preserved; (gerundive, passive); मा (mā) - do not; (prohibitive particle); च (ca) - and; also; अधर्मे (adharme) - in adharma; in unrighteousness; (locative singular); मनः (manaḥ) - mind; (accusative singular); कृथाः (kṛthāḥ) - place; set; make; (second person, imperative singular);]
(Parikṣit in Hāstinapura, in Śakraprastha but Yādava. Vajra, the king, by you must be protected. Do not and in unrighteousness the mind place.)
Let Parikṣit remain in Hāstinapura, and the Yādava (Vajra) in Śakraprastha. You must protect King Vajra, and do not let your mind incline to unrighteousness. (17-1-9)
इत्युक्त्वा धर्मराजः स वासुदेवस्य धीमतः। मातुलस्य च वृद्धस्य रामादीनां तथैव च ॥१७-१-१०॥
ity uktvā dharmarājaḥ sa vāsudevasya dhīmataḥ. mātulasya ca vṛddhasya rāmādīnāṁ tathaiva ca ॥17-1-10॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; धर्मराजः (dharmarājaḥ) - king Dharma (Yudhiṣṭhira); स (sa) - he; वासुदेवस्य (vāsudevasya) - of Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa); धीमतः (dhīmataḥ) - wise; मातुलस्य (mātulasya) - of the maternal uncle; च (ca) - and; वृद्धस्य (vṛddhasya) - of the elder; रामादीनां (rāmādīnām) - of Rāma and others; तथैव (tatha eva) - likewise; च (ca) - and;]
(Thus having spoken, king Dharma, he, to Vāsudeva the wise, to the maternal uncle and the elder, and to Rāma and others likewise and.)
Having thus spoken, King Yudhiṣṭhira addressed wise Vāsudeva, his maternal uncle, the elder, and Rāma and the others in the same way. (17-1-10)
मातृभिः सह धर्मात्मा कृत्वोदकमतन्द्रितः। श्राद्धान्युद्दिश्य सर्वेषां चकार विधिवत्तदा ॥१७-१-११॥
mātṛbhiḥ saha dharmātmā kṛtvodakam atandritaḥ। śrāddhāny uddiśya sarveṣāṃ cakāra vidhivat tadā॥17-1-11॥
[मातृभिः (mātṛbhiḥ) - with mothers; सह (saha) - together with; धर्मात्मा (dharmātmā) - righteous-souled (one whose soul is dharma); कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having performed; उदम् (udakam) - water (for rites); अतन्द्रितः (atandritaḥ) - without fatigue; श्राद्धानि (śrāddhāni) - funeral (rite) offerings; उद्दिश्य (uddiśya) - having intended; सर्वेषाम् (sarveṣām) - for all; चकार (cakāra) - he performed; विधिवत् (vidhivat) - according to rule; तदा (tadā) - at that time;]
(With mothers together the righteous-souled, having performed the water (rite) without fatigue, having intended the funeral offerings for all, performed according to rule at that time.)
At that time, the righteous-souled one, together with his mothers and without fatigue, performed all the funeral offerings, having previously conducted the water rituals, all according to proper rules. (17-1-11)
ददौ रत्नानि वासांसि ग्रामानश्वान्रथानपि। स्त्रियश्च द्विजमुख्येभ्यो गवां शतसहस्रशः ॥१७-१-१२॥
dadau ratnāni vāsāṃsi grāmān aśvān rathān api। striyaś ca dvijamukhyebhyo gavāṃ śatasahasraśaḥ ॥17-1-12॥
[ददौ (dadau) - he gave; रत्नानि (ratnāni) - gems; वासांसि (vāsāṃsi) - garments; ग्रामान् (grāmān) - villages; अश्वान् (aśvān) - horses; रथान् (rathān) - chariots; अपि (api) - also; स्त्रियः (striyaḥ) - women; च (ca) - and; द्विजमुख्येभ्यः (dvijamukhyebhyaḥ) - to the foremost of twice-born; गवाम् (gavām) - of cows; शतसहस्रशः (śatasahasraśaḥ) - by the hundreds of thousands;]
(He gave gems, garments, villages, horses, and chariots also, women and to the foremost of twice-born, of cows by the hundreds of thousands.)
He gave gems, garments, villages, horses, and chariots; also women and hundreds of thousands of cows to the foremost of the twice-born. (17-1-12)
कृपमभ्यर्च्य च गुरुमर्थमानपुरस्कृतम्। शिष्यं परिक्षितं तस्मै ददौ भरतसत्तमः ॥१७-१-१३॥
kṛpam abhyarcya ca gurum arthamānapuraskṛtam। śiṣyaṃ parīkṣitaṃ tasmai dadau bharatasattamaḥ॥17-1-13॥
[कृपम् (kṛpam) - Kṛpa (a proper noun); अभ्यर्च्य (abhyarcya) - having worshipped; च (ca) - and; गुरुम् (gurum) - teacher; अर्थमानपुरस्कृतम् (arthamānapuraskṛtam) - with honor and respect placed before; शिष्यं (śiṣyam) - disciple; परिक्षितम् (parīkṣitam) - tested; तस्मै (tasmai) - to him; ददौ (dadau) - gave; भरतसत्तमः (bharatasattamaḥ) - the best of the Bharatas;]
(Having worshipped Kṛpa and also the teacher with honor and respect placed before, the best of the Bharatas gave the tested disciple to him.)
The best of the Bharatas, having worshipped Kṛpa as the honored teacher with due respect, gave the tested disciple to him. (17-1-13)
ततस्तु प्रकृतीः सर्वाः समानाय्य युधिष्ठिरः। सर्वमाचष्ट राजर्षिश्चिकीर्षितमथात्मनः ॥१७-१-१४॥
tatastu prakṛtīḥ sarvāḥ samānāyya yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। sarvamācaṣṭa rājarṣiścikīrṣitamathātmanah ॥17-1-14॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तु (tu) - indeed; प्रकृतीः (prakṛtīḥ) - nobles; सर्वाः (sarvāḥ) - all; समानाय्य (samānāyya) - having assembled; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira; सर्वम् (sarvam) - everything; आचष्ट (ācaṣṭa) - declared; राजर्षि (rājarṣi) - royal sage; चिकीर्षितम् (cikīrṣitam) - what was intended (to be done); अथ (atha) - then; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of himself;]
(Then indeed, Yudhishthira, having assembled all nobles, the royal sage declared everything then what was intended of himself.)
Then Yudhishthira gathered all the nobles, and the royal sage explained to them all that he himself intended to do. (17-1-14)
ते श्रुत्वैव वचस्तस्य पौरजानपदा जनाः। भृशमुद्विग्नमनसो नाभ्यनन्दन्त तद्वचः ॥१७-१-१५॥
te śrutvaiva vacas tasya paurajānapadā janāḥ। bhṛśam udvignamanasaḥ na abhyanandanta tad vacaḥ ॥17-1-15॥
[ते (te) - they; श्रुत्वैव (śrutva eva) - having heard indeed; वचः (vacaḥ) - words; तस्य (tasya) - his; पौरजानपदा (paurajānapadāḥ) - citizens and country folk; जनाः (janāḥ) - people; भृशम् (bhṛśam) - greatly; उद्विग्नमनसः (udvignamanasaḥ) - with disturbed minds; न (na) - not; अभ्यनन्दन्त (abhyanandanta) - welcomed; तत् (tat) - those; वचः (vacaḥ) - words;]
(They having indeed heard his words, the citizens and country folk, people, greatly with disturbed minds, did not welcome those words.)
When they heard his words, the citizens and the people of the country, greatly disturbed in mind, did not welcome those words. (17-1-15)
नैवं कर्तव्यमिति ते तदोचुस्ते नराधिपम्। न च राजा तथाकार्षीत्कालपर्यायधर्मवित् ॥१७-१-१६॥
naivaṃ kartavyam iti te tad ūkus te narādhipam। na ca rājā tathā kārṣīt kālaparyāyadharmavit॥17-1-16॥
[न (na) - not; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; कर्तव्यम् (kartavyam) - should be done; इति (iti) - thus; (quotation ending) ते (te) - they; तद (tad) - that; ऊचुः (ūcus) - said; ते (te) - to him; नराधिपम् (narādhipam) - king; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; राजा (rājā) - the king; तथा (tathā) - so; in that manner; अकार्षीत् (akārṣīt) - did; कालपर्यायधर्मवित् (kālaparyāyadharmavit) - knower of the duties appropriate to time;]
(Not thus should it be done—thus they said that to the king; and the king did not so, being knower of the duties appropriate to time.)
“It should not be done this way”—thus they said that to the king; and the king, being aware of the duties appropriate to time, did not act in that manner. (17-1-16)
ततोऽनुमान्य धर्मात्मा पौरजानपदं जनम्। गमनाय मतिं चक्रे भ्रातरश्चास्य ते तदा ॥१७-१-१७॥
tato'numānya dharmātmā paurajānapadaṃ janam। gamanāya matiṃ cakre bhrātaraś ca asya te tadā॥17-1-17॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अनुमान्य (anumānya) - having informed; धर्मात्मा (dharmātmā) - righteous one; पौरजानपदं (paurajānapadam) - citizens and country people; जनम् (janam) - people; गमनाय (gamanāya) - for going; मतिं (matiṃ) - intention; चक्रे (cakre) - he made; भ्रातरः (bhrātaraḥ) - brothers; च (ca) - and; अस्य (asya) - his; ते (te) - they; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Then, having informed the citizens and country people, the righteous one made the intention for going, and his brothers, they then (did so).)
Then, having informed the citizens and country people, the righteous one made the decision to depart, and his brothers did likewise at that time. (17-1-17)
ततः स राजा कौरव्यो धर्मपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः। उत्सृज्याभरणान्यङ्गाज्जगृहे वल्कलान्युत ॥१७-१-१८॥
tataḥ sa rājā kauravyo dharmaputro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। utsṛjyābharaṇānyaṅgāj jagṛhe valkalāny uta ॥17-1-18॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; स (sa) - he; राजा (rājā) - king; कौरव्यो (kauravyo) - descendant of Kuru; धर्मपुत्रः (dharmaputraḥ) - son of Dharma; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira; उत्सृज्य (utsṛjya) - leaving; आभरणानि (ābharaṇāni) - ornaments; अङ्गात् (aṅgāt) - from (his) body; जगृहे (jagṛhe) - took; वल्कलानि (valkalāni) - bark garments; उत (uta) - indeed;]
(Then he king Kauravya, son of Dharma, Yudhishthira, leaving ornaments from (his) body, took bark garments indeed.)
Then King Yudhishthira, the Kaurava and son of Dharma, removed the ornaments from his body and took up bark garments. (17-1-18)
भीमार्जुनौ यमौ चैव द्रौपदी च यशस्विनी। तथैव सर्वे जगृहुर्वल्कलानि जनाधिप ॥१७-१-१९॥
bhīmārjunau yamau caiva draupadī ca yaśasvinī। tathaiva sarve jagṛhurvalkalāni janādhipa ॥17-1-19॥
[भीमार्जुनौ (bhīmārjunau) - Bhīma and Arjuna; यमौ (yamau) - the two sons of Yama; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; द्रौपदी (draupadī) - Draupadī; च (ca) - and; यशस्विनी (yaśasvinī) - the illustrious (female); तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; सर्वे (sarve) - all (others); जगृहु: (jagṛhuḥ) - took up; वल्कलानि (valkalāni) - bark garments; जनाधिप (janādhipa) - O ruler of men;]
(Bhīma and Arjuna, the two sons of Yama, and also Draupadī the illustrious; in the same way all took up bark-garments, O ruler of men.)
Bhīma and Arjuna, the twins, and Draupadī the renowned, and in the same way all the others took up the bark-cloth, O ruler of men. (17-1-19)
विधिवत्कारयित्वेष्टिं नैष्ठिकीं भरतर्षभ। समुत्सृज्याप्सु सर्वेऽग्नीन्प्रतस्थुर्नरपुङ्गवाः ॥१७-१-२०॥

(Brothers five, Kṛṣṇā, and the sixth, the dog also, the seventh. By himself as the seventh, the king departed from Gajasāhvaya. By the townspeople followed far, by all and by the inner apartments also.)

न चैनमशकत्कश्चिन्निवर्तस्वेति भाषितुम्। न्यवर्तन्त ततः सर्वे नरा नगरवासिनः ॥१७-१-२४॥
na ca enam aśakat kaścit nivartasva iti bhāṣitum। nyavartanta tataḥ sarve narā nagaravāsinaḥ॥17-1-24॥

yogayuktā mahātmānas tyāgadharmam upeyuṣaḥ। abhijagmur bahūn deśān saritaḥ parvatāṁs tathā॥17-1-28॥

(Engaged in yoga, the great-souled ones having attained the principle of renunciation, they went to many countries, rivers, and mountains as well.)
Endowed with yoga, those great souls, having taken up the principle of renunciation, journeyed to many lands, rivers, and mountains. (17-1-28)
युधिष्ठिरो ययावग्रे भीमस्तु तदनन्तरम्। अर्जुनस्तस्य चान्वेव यमौ चैव यथाक्रमम् ॥१७-१-२९॥
yudhiṣṭhiro yayāv agre bhīmas tu tadanantaram। arjunas tasya cānveva yamau caiva yathākramam ॥17-1-29॥

अग्निं ते ददृशुस्तत्र स्थितं शैलमिवाग्रतः। मार्गमावृत्य तिष्ठन्तं साक्षात्पुरुषविग्रहम् ॥१७-१-३३॥
agniṁ te dadṛśus tatra sthitaṁ śailam ivāgrataḥ। mārgam āvṛtya tiṣṭhantaṁ sākṣāt puruṣavigraham ॥17-1-33॥

चक्ररत्नं तु यत्कृष्णे स्थितमासीन्महात्मनि। गतं तच्च पुनर्हस्ते कालेनैष्यति तस्य ह ॥१७-१-३८॥
cakraratnaṁ tu yat kṛṣṇe sthitam āsīn mahātmani। gataṁ tac ca punar haste kālena eṣyati tasya ha ॥17-1-38॥
[चक्ररत्नं (cakraratnam) - the jewel of the discus; तु (tu) - but; यत् (yat) - which; कृष्णे (kṛṣṇe) - in Kṛṣṇa; स्थितम् (sthitam) - was abiding; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; महात्मनि (mahātmani) - in the great soul; गतं (gatam) - departed; तत् (tat) - that; च (ca) - and; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; हस्ते (haste) - in the hand; कालेन (kālena) - by time; एष्यति (eṣyati) - will come; तस्य (tasya) - of him; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(But the jewel of the discus, which was abiding in Kṛṣṇa, the great soul, that departed, and again, by time, will come into the hand of him indeed.)

वरुणादाहृतं पूर्वं मयैतत्पार्थकारणात्। गाण्डीवं कार्मुकश्रेष्ठं वरुणायैव दीयताम् ॥१७-१-३९॥

[वरुणात् (varuṇāt) - from Varuṇa; आहृतं (āhṛtam) - brought; पूर्वं (pūrvam) - formerly; मया (mayā) - by me; एतत् (etat) - this; पार्थकारणात् (pārthakāraṇāt) - for the sake of Pārtha (Arjuna); गाण्डीवं (gāṇḍīvam) - Gāṇḍīva; कार्मुकश्रेष्ठं (kārmukaśreṣṭham) - best of bows; वरुणाय (varuṇāya) - to Varuṇa; एव (eva) - indeed; दीयताम् (dīyatām) - let it be given;]
(From Varuṇa, brought formerly by me, this for the sake of Pārtha. Gāṇḍīva, best of bows, to Varuṇa indeed let it be given.)
This Gāṇḍīva, the best of bows, which was formerly brought by me from Varuṇa for the sake of Pārtha, should now indeed be given to Varuṇa. (17-1-39)
ततस्ते भ्रातरः सर्वे धनञ्जयमचोदयन्। स जले प्राक्षिपत्तत्तु तथाक्षय्यौ महेषुधी ॥१७-१-४०॥
tatas te bhrātaraḥ sarve dhanañjayam acodayan। sa jale prākṣipat tat tu tathākṣayyau maheṣudhī ॥17-1-40॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; ते (te) - they; भ्रातरः (bhrātaraḥ) - brothers; सर्वे (sarve) - all; धनञ्जयम् (dhanañjayam) - Dhanañjaya (Arjuna); अचोदयन् (acodayan) - urged; स (sa) - he; जले (jale) - into water; प्राक्षिपत् (prākṣipat) - threw; तत् (tat) - that; तु (tu) - but; तथा (tathā) - thus; अक्षय्यौ (akṣayyau) - two inexhaustible; महेषुधी (maheṣudhī) - great bows;]
(Then they, the brothers, all urged Dhanañjaya. He threw that into the water, but thus (it was) the two inexhaustible great bows.)
Then all the brothers urged Dhanañjaya, and he threw that into the water, namely the two inexhaustible great bows. (17-1-40)
ततोऽग्निर्भरतश्रेष्ठ तत्रैवान्तरधीयत। ययुश्च पाण्डवा वीरास्ततस्ते दक्षिणामुखाः ॥१७-१-४१॥
tato'gnir bharataśreṣṭha tatraivāntaradhīyata. yayuś ca pāṇḍavā vīrās tatas te dakṣiṇāmukhāḥ ॥17-1-41॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अग्निः (agniḥ) - fire; भरतश्रेष्ठ (bharataśreṣṭha) - O best of the Bharatas; तत्र एव (tatra eva) - right there; अन्तरधीयत (antaradhīyata) - disappeared; ययुः (yayuḥ) - they went; च (ca) - and; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; वीराः (vīrāḥ) - heroes; ततः (tataḥ) - then; ते (te) - they; दक्षिणामुखाः (dakṣiṇāmukhāḥ) - facing south;]
(Then fire, O best of the Bharatas, right there disappeared. And the Pāṇḍava heroes then, they facing south, went.)
Then, O best of the Bharatas, the fire disappeared right there. And the heroic Pāṇḍavas then proceeded facing south. (17-1-41)
ततस्ते तूत्तरेणैव तीरेण लवणाम्भसः। जग्मुर्भरतशार्दूल दिशं दक्षिणपश्चिमम् ॥१७-१-४२॥
tatas te tūt-tareṇaiva tīreṇa lavaṇāmbhasaḥ। jagmur bharata-śārdūla diśaṃ dakṣiṇa-paścimām ॥17-1-42॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; ते (te) - they; तूत्तरेणैव (tūt-tareṇa eva) - indeed by the northern (bank); तीरेण (tīreṇa) - by the shore; लवणाम्भसः (lavaṇāmbhasaḥ) - of the salty water; जग्मुः (jagmuḥ) - they went; भरतशार्दूल (bharata-śārdūla) - tiger among men, O Bharata; दिशम् (diśam) - direction; दक्षिणपश्चिमम् (dakṣiṇa-paścimām) - southwest;]
(Then they indeed, by the northern shore of the salty water, went, O Bharata tiger among men, towards the southwest direction.)
Then, O Bharata, tiger among men, they proceeded along the northern shore of the salty sea in the southwest direction. (17-1-42)
ततः पुनः समावृत्ताः पश्चिमां दिशमेव ते। ददृशुर्द्वारकां चापि सागरेण परिप्लुताम् ॥१७-१-४३॥
tataḥ punaḥ samāvṛttāḥ paścimāṃ diśam-eva te। dadṛśur-dvārakāṃ ca api sāgareṇa pariplutām॥17-1-43॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; समावृत्ताः (samāvṛttāḥ) - having returned; पश्चिमाम् (paścimām) - western; दिशम् (diśam) - direction; एव (eva) - indeed; ते (te) - they; ददृशुः (dadṛśuḥ) - saw; द्वारकाम् (dvārakām) - Dvārakā; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; सागरेण (sāgareṇa) - by the ocean; परिप्लुताम् (pariplutām) - submerged;]
(Then again, having returned, to the western direction indeed, they saw Dvārakā also, submerged by the ocean.)
Then again, as they returned towards the west, they saw that Dvārakā too had been submerged by the ocean. (17-1-43)
उदीचीं पुनरावृत्त्य ययुर्भरतसत्तमाः। प्रादक्षिण्यं चिकीर्षन्तः पृथिव्या योगधर्मिणः ॥१७-१-४४॥
udīcīṃ punarāvṛttya yayur bharatasattamāḥ। prādakṣiṇyaṃ cikīrṣantaḥ pṛthivyā yogadharmiṇaḥ॥17-1-44॥
[उदीचीं (udīcīṃ) - to the north; पुनरावृत्त्य (punarāvṛttya) - having turned back; ययुः (yayuḥ) - they went; भरतसत्तमाः (bharatasattamāḥ) - best of the Bharatas; प्रादक्षिण्यं (prādakṣiṇyam) - circumambulation (rite of moving to the right); चिकीर्षन्तः (cikīrṣantaḥ) - wishing to perform; पृथिव्या (pṛthivyāḥ) - of the earth; योगधर्मिणः (yogadharmiṇaḥ) - those possessing the virtue of yoga;]
(To the north, having turned back, the best of the Bharatas went, wishing to perform circumambulation of the earth, those possessing the virtue of yoga.)
Having turned back towards the north, the best of the Bharatas, endowed with the virtue of yoga, proceeded, wishing to circumambulate the earth. (17-1-44)
