ततस्ते नियतात्मान उदीचीं दिशमास्थिताः। ददृशुर्योगयुक्ताश्च हिमवन्तं महागिरिम् ॥१७-२-१॥
tataste niyatātmāna udīcīṃ diśamāsthitāḥ। dadṛśuryogayuktāśca himavantaṃ mahāgirim ॥17-2-1॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; ते (te) - they; नियतात्मानः (niyatātmānaḥ) - self-controlled ones; उदीचीम् (udīcīm) - northern; दिशम् (diśam) - direction; आस्थिताः (āsthitāḥ) - having taken position; ददृशुः (dadṛśuḥ) - they saw; योगयुक्ताः (yogayuktāḥ) - absorbed in yoga; च (ca) - and; हिमवन्तम् (himavantam) - Himavat; महागिरिम् (mahāgirim) - great mountain;]
(Then they, self-controlled, having taken position in the northern direction, and absorbed in yoga, saw Himavat, the great mountain.)
Then those self-controlled ones, having positioned themselves towards the north and joined in yoga, beheld Himavat, the great mountain. (17-2-1)
तं चाप्यतिक्रमन्तस्ते ददृशुर्वालुकार्णवम्। अवैक्षन्त महाशैलं मेरुं शिखरिणां वरम् ॥१७-२-२॥
taṃ cāpyatikramantaste dadṛśurvālukārṇavam। avaikṣanta mahāśailaṃ meruṃ śikhariṇāṃ varam ॥17-2-2॥
[तं (taṃ) - that; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अतिक्रमन्तः (atikramantaḥ) - crossing; ते (te) - they; ददृशुः (dadṛśuḥ) - saw; वालुक-अर्णवम् (vālukārṇavam) - sandy ocean; अवैक्षन्त (avaikṣanta) - they beheld; महाशैलम् (mahāśailam) - great mountain; मेरुम् (merum) - Meru; शिखरिणां (śikhariṇāṃ) - of the peaks; वरम् (varam) - the best;]
(That and also crossing, they saw a sandy ocean. They beheld the great mountain Meru, the best of peaks.)
And after crossing that, they saw an ocean of sand. They saw the great mountain Meru, the chief among peaks. (17-2-2)
तेषां तु गच्छतां शीघ्रं सर्वेषां योगधर्मिणाम्। याज्ञसेनी भ्रष्टयोगा निपपात महीतले ॥१७-२-३॥
teṣāṃ tu gacchatāṃ śīghraṃ sarveṣāṃ yogadharmiṇām। yājñasenī bhraṣṭayogā nipapāta mahītale ॥17-2-3॥
[तेषां (teṣāṃ) - of them; तु (tu) - but; गच्छतां (gacchatām) - going; शीघ्रं (śīghram) - quickly; सर्वेषां (sarveṣām) - of all; योगधर्मिणाम् (yogadharmiṇām) - of those established in yoga; याज्ञसेनी (yājñasenī) - Yājñasenī (Draupadi, daughter of Yajñasena); भ्रष्टयोगा (bhraṣṭayogā) - her yoga lost; निपपात (nipapāta) - fell down; महीतले (mahītale) - on the earth;]
(Of them, but, going quickly, of all those established in yoga, Yājñasenī, her yoga lost, fell down on the earth.)
As all those established in yoga were quickly moving onward, Yājñasenī, having lost her yoga, fell down to the earth. (17-2-3)
तां तु प्रपतितां दृष्ट्वा भीमसेनो महाबलः। उवाच धर्मराजानं याज्ञसेनीमवेक्ष्य ह ॥१७-२-४॥
tāṃ tu prapatitāṃ dṛṣṭvā bhīmaseno mahābalaḥ। uvāca dharmarājānaṃ yājñasenīm avekṣya ha ॥17-2-4॥

Seeing her fallen down, mighty Bhīmasena, having looked at Yājñasenī, spoke to Dharmarāja. (17-2-4)
नाधर्मश्चरितः कश्चिद्राजपुत्र्या परन्तप। कारणं किं नु तद्राजन्यत्कृष्णा पतिता भुवि ॥१७-२-५॥
nādharmas caritaḥ kaścid rājaputryā parantapa। kāraṇaṃ kiṃ nu tad rājan yat kṛṣṇā patitā bhuvi॥17-2-5॥
[न (na) - not; अधर्मः (adharmaḥ) - unrighteous act; चरितः (caritaḥ) - has been done; कश्चित् (kaścit) - by any; राजपुत्र्या (rājaputryā) - by the princess; परन्तप (parantapa) - O scorcher of foes; कारणम् (kāraṇam) - the cause; किम् (kim) - what; नु (nu) - indeed; तत् (tat) - that; राजन् (rājan) - O king; यत् (yat) - because; कृष्णा (kṛṣṇā) - Kṛṣṇā; पतिता (patitā) - has fallen; भुवि (bhuvi) - on the ground;]
(Not an unrighteous act has been done by the princess, O scorcher of foes. What indeed is the cause, O king, that Kṛṣṇā has fallen on the ground?)
The princess has not committed any unrighteous act, O scorcher of foes. What, O king, is the reason that Kṛṣṇā has fallen to the ground? (17-2-5)

pakṣapāto mahānasya viśeṣeṇa dhanañjaye। tasyaitat phalam adya eṣā bhuṅkte puruṣasattama ॥17-2-6॥

(Partiality of the cook particularly toward Dhanañjaya; his this fruit today she enjoys, O best among men;)
O best among men, this woman today enjoys the fruit of the cook's particular partiality toward Dhanañjaya (Arjuna); (17-2-6)

एवमुक्त्वानवेक्ष्यैनां ययौ धर्मसुतो नृपः। समाधाय मनो धीमान्धर्मात्मा पुरुषर्षभः ॥१७-२-७॥
evam-uktvā anavekṣya enām yayau dharmasutaḥ nṛpaḥ। samādhāya manaḥ dhīmān dharmātmā puruṣarṣabhaḥ॥17-2-7॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; अनवेक्ष्य (anavekṣya) - without looking back; एनाम् (enām) - her; ययौ (yayau) - he went; धर्मसुतः (dharmasutaḥ) - son of Dharma; नृपः (nṛpaḥ) - king; समाधाय (samādhāya) - having composed; मन् (manaḥ) - the mind; धीमान् (dhīmān) - wise; धर्मात्मा (dharmātmā) - righteous; पुरुषर्षभः (puruṣarṣabhaḥ) - best among men;]
(Thus having spoken, without looking back at her, he went, the son of Dharma, the king; having composed his mind, the wise, righteous, best among men.)
Thus, having said this and without looking back at her, the wise and righteous king, the son of Dharma, composed his mind and departed, the best among men. (17-2-7)
सहदेवस्ततो धीमान्निपपात महीतले। तं चापि पतितं दृष्ट्वा भीमो राजानमब्रवीत् ॥१७-२-८॥
sahadevastato dhīmān nipapāta mahītale। taṃ cāpi patitaṃ dṛṣṭvā bhīmo rājānam abravīt ॥17-2-8॥
[सहदेवः (sahadevaḥ) - Sahadeva; ततः (tataḥ) - then; धीमान् (dhīmān) - wise; निपपात (nipapāta) - fell down; महीतले (mahītale) - on the earth; तं (taṃ) - him; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; पतितं (patitaṃ) - fallen; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; भीमः (bhīmaḥ) - Bhima; राजानम् (rājānam) - the king; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said;]
(Sahadeva then wise fell down on the earth. Him and also fallen having seen, Bhima to the king said.)
Then the wise Sahadeva fell on the earth. Seeing him fallen as well, Bhima said to the king. (17-2-8)
योऽयमस्मासु सर्वेषु शुश्रूषुरनहङ्कृतः। सोऽयं माद्रवतीपुत्रः कस्मान्निपतितो भुवि ॥१७-२-९॥
yo'ayam asmāsu sarveṣu śuśrūṣur anahaṅkṛtaḥ। so'yaṃ mādravatī-putraḥ kasmān nipatitaḥ bhuvi ॥17-2-9॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; अयम् (ayam) - this; अस्मासु (asmāsu) - among us; सर्वेषु (sarveṣu) - in all; शुश्रूषुः (śuśrūṣuḥ) - willing to serve; अनहङ्कृतः (anahaṅkṛtaḥ) - without pride; सः (saḥ) - he; अयम् (ayam) - this; माद्रवतीपुत्रः (mādravatī-putraḥ) - son of Mādravatī; कस्मात् (kasmāt) - why; निपतितः (nipatitaḥ) - fallen; भुवि (bhuvi) - on the ground;]
(Who this among us, in all, willing to serve, without pride? He this son of Mādravatī, why fallen on the ground?)
Who is this among us, ever willing to serve and without pride? Why has this son of Mādravatī fallen to the ground? (17-2-9)
युधिष्ठिर उवाच॥

आत्मनः सदृशं प्राज्ञं नैषोऽमन्यत कञ्चन। तेन दोषेण पतितस्तस्मादेष नृपात्मजः ॥१७-२-१०॥
ātmanaḥ sadṛśaṁ prājñaṁ naiṣo’man yata kañcana. tena doṣeṇa patitas tasmād eṣa nṛpātmajaḥ ॥17-2-10॥
[आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of himself; सदृशं (sadṛśam) - equal to; प्राज्ञं (prājñam) - wise; न (na) - not; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this (person); अमन्यत (amanyata) - regarded; कञ्चन (kañcana) - anyone; तेन (tena) - by that; दोषेण (doṣeṇa) - by fault; पतितः (patitaḥ) - fallen; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; एष (eṣa) - this; नृपात्मजः (nṛpātmajaḥ) - prince;]
(Of himself equal wise not this (person) regarded anyone. By that fault fallen therefore this prince.)
This prince, not considering anyone as wise as himself, has fallen by that fault; therefore, this is his downfall. (17-2-10)

इत्युक्त्वा तु समुत्सृज्य सहदेवं ययौ तदा। भ्रातृभिः सह कौन्तेयः शुना चैव युधिष्ठिरः ॥१७-२-११॥
ity uktvā tu samutsṛjya sahadevaṁ yayau tadā। bhrātṛbhiḥ saha kaunteyaḥ śunā caiva yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ॥17-2-11॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; तु (tu) - but; समुत्सृज्य (samutsṛjya) - having left behind; सहदेवम् (sahadevam) - Sahadeva; ययौ (yayau) - went; तदा (tadā) - then; भ्रातृभिः (bhrātṛbhiḥ) - with the brothers; सह (saha) - together with; कौन्तेयः (kaunteyaḥ) - the son of Kunti; शुना (śunā) - with the dog; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhisthira;]
(Thus having spoken, but having left Sahadeva, he then went. With his brothers and with the dog also indeed Yudhisthira.)
Thus, having spoken and leaving Sahadeva behind, Yudhishthira, together with his brothers and the dog, went forth. (17-2-11)
कृष्णां निपतितां दृष्ट्वा सहदेवं च पाण्डवम्। आर्तो बन्धुप्रियः शूरो नकुलो निपपात ह ॥१७-२-१२॥
kṛṣṇāṃ nipatitāṃ dṛṣṭvā sahadevaṃ ca pāṇḍavam। ārto bandhupriyaḥ śūro nakulo nipapāta ha ॥17-2-12॥
[कृष्णाम् (kṛṣṇām) - Kṛṣṇā (the woman named Kṛṣṇā, i.e., Draupadī); निपतिताम् (nipatitām) - fallen; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; सहदेवम् (sahadevam) - Sahadeva; च (ca) - and; पाण्डवम् (pāṇḍavam) - the Pāṇḍava; आर्तः (ārtaḥ) - distressed; बन्धुप्रियः (bandhupriyaḥ) - one who loves his relatives; शूरः (śūraḥ) - heroic one; नकुलः (nakulaḥ) - Nakula; निपपात (nipapāta) - fell down; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(Having seen Kṛṣṇā fallen and (his brother) Sahadeva, the Pāṇḍava, distressed, loving his relatives, heroic Nakula indeed fell down.)
When Nakula, who was distressed, affectionate to his relatives, and heroic, saw Kṛṣṇā falling and (his brother) the Pāṇḍava Sahadeva, he too fell down. (17-2-12)
तस्मिन्निपतिते वीरे नकुले चारुदर्शने। पुनरेव तदा भीमो राजानमिदमब्रवीत् ॥१७-२-१३॥
tasminnipatite vīre nakule cārudarśane। punareva tadā bhīmo rājānamidamabravīt॥17-2-13॥

When the hero Nakula, of lovely appearance, had fallen, then again Bhīma said this to the king. (17-2-13)
योऽयमक्षतधर्मात्मा भ्राता वचनकारकः। रूपेणाप्रतिमो लोके नकुलः पतितो भुवि ॥१७-२-१४॥
yo'ayam akṣata-dharmātmā bhrātā vacana-kārakaḥ। rūpeṇa apratimo loke nakulaḥ patito bhuvi ॥17-2-14॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; अयम् (ayam) - this; अक्षतधर्मात्मा (akṣata-dharmātmā) - unbroken-in-righteousness (whose nature is unwavering righteousness); भ्राता (bhrātā) - brother; वचनकारकः (vacana-kārakaḥ) - one who acts on words; रूपेण (rūpeṇa) - by form; अप्रतिमः (apratimaḥ) - unmatched; लोके (loke) - in the world; नकुलः (nakulaḥ) - Nakula; पतितः (patitaḥ) - fallen; भुवि (bhuvi) - on the ground;]
(Who this unbroken-in-righteousness brother, one who acts on word; by form unmatched in the world, Nakula fallen on the ground.)
This brother, whose nature is unwavering righteousness, who always acted on his word and was unmatched in appearance in the world—Nakula has now fallen to the ground. (17-2-14)
इत्युक्तो भीमसेनेन प्रत्युवाच युधिष्ठिरः। नकुलं प्रति धर्मात्मा सर्वबुद्धिमतां वरः ॥१७-२-१५॥
ityukto bhīmasenena pratyuvāca yudhiṣṭhiraḥ. nakulaṃ prati dharmātmā sarvabuddhimatāṃ varaḥ ॥17-2-15॥

रूपेण मत्समो नास्ति कश्चिदित्यस्य दर्शनम्। अधिकश्चाहमेवैक इत्यस्य मनसि स्थितम् ॥१७-२-१६॥
rūpeṇa matsamo nāsti kaścidityasya darśanam। adhikaścāhamevaika ityasya manasi sthitam ॥17-2-16॥
[रूपेण (rūpeṇa) - by form; by appearance; मत्समः (matsamaḥ) - equal to me; नास्ति (nāsti) - there is not; कश्चित् (kaścit) - anyone; इत्यस्य (ityasya) - of this (thought: 'thus'); दर्शनम् (darśanam) - view; perception; अधिकः (adhikaḥ) - superior; च (ca) - and; अहम् (aham) - I; एव (eva) - alone; indeed; एकः (ekaḥ) - alone; one; इत्यस्य (ityasya) - of this (thought: 'thus'); मनसि (manasi) - in (the) mind; स्थितम् (sthitam) - (is) established;]
(By form, equal to me there is not anyone — of this (thought) the perception; and superior I alone — of this (thought) in the mind (is) established.)
The thought, 'There is no one equal to me in appearance,' is seen; and the idea, 'I alone am superior,' is established in the mind. (17-2-16)
नकुलः पतितस्तस्मादागच्छ त्वं वृकोदर। यस्य यद्विहितं वीर सोऽवश्यं तदुपाश्नुते ॥१७-२-१७॥
nakulaḥ patitastasmādāgaccha tvaṁ vṛkodara। yasya yadvihitaṁ vīra so'vaśyaṁ tadu pāśnute ॥17-2-17॥
[नकुलः (nakulaḥ) - Nakul (proper noun); पतितः (patitaḥ) - has fallen; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - from that; आगच्छ (āgaccha) - come; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; वृकोदर (vṛkodara) - Vṛkodara (epithet of Bhīma); यस्य (yasya) - whose; यत् (yat) - which; विहितं (vihitaṁ) - ordained; वीर (vīra) - hero; सः (saḥ) - he; अवश्यं (avaśyaṁ) - certainly; तत् (tat) - that; उपाश्नुते (upāśnute) - obtains;]
(Nakul has fallen from that, come you, Vṛkodara. Whose which is ordained, O hero, he certainly that obtains.)
Nakul has fallen from there, come, Vṛkodara. Whatever is ordained for someone, O hero, he certainly obtains that. (17-2-17)
तांस्तु प्रपतितान्दृष्ट्वा पाण्डवः श्वेतवाहनः। पपात शोकसन्तप्तस्ततोऽनु परवीरहा ॥१७-२-१८॥
tāṃs tu prapatitān dṛṣṭvā pāṇḍavaḥ śvetavāhanaḥ। papāta śokasantaptaḥ tato'nu paravīrahā ॥17-2-18॥

(But seeing them fallen, the son of Pāṇḍu, he who has a white-horsed chariot, afflicted with sorrow, fell then after, destroyer of enemy heroes.)
But seeing them fallen, the son of Pāṇḍu, the white-charioted, afflicted with sorrow, the destroyer of enemy heroes, then fell down after them. (17-2-18)
तस्मिंस्तु पुरुषव्याघ्रे पतिते शक्रतेजसि। म्रियमाणे दुराधर्षे भीमो राजानमब्रवीत् ॥१७-२-१९॥
tasmiṃstu puruṣavyāghre patite śakratejasi। mriyamāṇe durādharṣe bhīmo rājānamabravīt ॥17-2-19॥
[तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; तु (tu) - but; पुरुषव्याघ्रे (puruṣavyāghre) - tiger among men; पतिते (patite) - when fallen; शक्रतेजसि (śakratejasi) - endowed with Indra's energy; म्रियमाणे (mriyamāṇe) - while dying; दुराधर्षे (durādharṣe) - difficult to subdue; भीमः (bhīmaḥ) - Bhima; राजानम् (rājānam) - to the king; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke;]
(But in that tiger among men, fallen, endowed with Indra's energy, while dying, difficult to subdue, Bhima spoke to the king.)
But when that tiger among men, endowed with Indra's energy and difficult to subdue, was lying fallen and dying, Bhima spoke to the king. (17-2-19)
अनृतं न स्मराम्यस्य स्वैरेष्वपि महात्मनः। अथ कस्य विकारोऽयं येनायं पतितो भुवि ॥१७-२-२०॥
anṛtaṃ na smarāmy asya svaireṣv api mahātmanaḥ. atha kasya vikāro'yaṃ yenāyaṃ patito bhuvi ॥17-2-20॥
[अनृतं (anṛtam) - untruth; falsehood; न (na) - not; स्मरामि (smarāmi) - I recall; अस्य (asya) - of him; स्वैरेषु (svaireṣu) - in liberties; in moments of freedom; अपि (api) - even; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - of the great-souled one; अथ (atha) - then; now; कस्य (kasya) - of whom; विकारः (vikāraḥ) - change; alteration; अयम् (ayam) - this; येन (yena) - by which; अयम् (ayam) - this; पतितः (patitaḥ) - has fallen; भुवि (bhuvi) - on the earth;]
(Untruth I do not recall of him, even in liberties, of the great-souled one. Then, of whom is this change, by which this one has fallen on the earth?)
I do not recall the great-souled one ever speaking falsehood, not even in moments of liberty. Then whose alteration is this, by which he has fallen to the earth? (17-2-20)
युधिष्ठिर उवाच॥

Yudhishthira said.
एकाह्ना निर्दहेयं वै शत्रूनित्यर्जुनोऽब्रवीत्। न च तत्कृतवानेष शूरमानी ततोऽपतत् ॥१७-२-२१॥
ekāhnā nirdaheyaṃ vai śatrūnity arjuno'bravīt। na ca tat kṛtavān eṣa śūramānī tato'patat ॥17-2-21॥
[एकाह्ना (ekāhnā) - in one day; निर्दहेयम् (nirdaheyaṃ) - I could burn; वै (vai) - indeed; शत्रून् (śatrūn) - enemies; इति (iti) - thus; अर्जुनः (arjunaḥ) - Arjuna; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; तत् (tat) - that; कृतवान् (kṛtavān) - did; एषः (eṣaḥ) - he; शूरमानी (śūramānī) - self-considered hero; ततः (tataḥ) - therefore; अपतत् (apatat) - fell;]
(In one day I could burn (destroy) indeed the enemies—thus Arjuna said. And he did not do that—this self-considered hero therefore fell.)
Arjuna said, "Indeed, I could destroy the enemies in one day." But this self-styled hero did not do that, and therefore he fell. (17-2-21)
अवमेने धनुर्ग्राहानेष सर्वांश्च फल्गुनः। यथा चोक्तं तथा चैव कर्तव्यं भूतिमिच्छता ॥१७-२-२२॥
avamene dhanurgrāhāneṣa sarvāṁś ca phalgunaḥ। yathā coktaṁ tathā caiva kartavyaṁ bhūtim icchatā ॥17-2-22॥
[अवमेने (avamene) - he disrespected; धनुर्ग्राहान् (dhanurgrāhān) - archers; (those who grasp bows;) एषः (eṣaḥ) - this (person); सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; च (ca) - and; फल्गुनः (phalgunaḥ) - Phalguna (Arjuna); यथा (yathā) - as; च (ca) - and; उक्तं (uktaṁ) - spoken; तथा (tathā) - so; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; कर्तव्यम् (kartavyam) - should be done; भूतिम् (bhūtim) - prosperity; इच्छता (icchatā) - by one wishing (for);]
(He disrespected the archers—this Phalguna (Arjuna)—all, and as spoken, so indeed, it should be done by one wishing for prosperity.)
This Phalguna (Arjuna) disrespected all the archers, and as has been spoken, so indeed should one act who desires prosperity. (17-2-22)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

इत्युक्त्वा प्रस्थितो राजा भीमोऽथ निपपात ह। पतितश्चाब्रवीद्भीमो धर्मराजं युधिष्ठिरम् ॥१७-२-२३॥
ity-uktvā prasthito rājā bhīmo 'tha nipapāta ha। patitaś cābravīd bhīmo dharmarājaṃ yudhiṣṭhiram॥17-2-23॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; प्रस्थितः (prasthitaḥ) - departed; राजा (rājā) - the king; भीमः (bhīmaḥ) - Bhīma; अथ (atha) - then; निपपात (nipapāta) - fell down; ह (ha) - indeed; पतितः (patitaḥ) - fallen; च (ca) - and; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke; भीमः (bhīmaḥ) - Bhīma; धर्मराजम् (dharmarājam) - Dharmarāja; युधिष्ठिरम् (yudhiṣṭhiram) - Yudhiṣṭhira;]
(Thus having spoken, departed the king Bhīma then indeed fell down. And fallen, Bhīma spoke (to) Dharmarāja Yudhiṣṭhira.)
Having thus spoken, King Bhīma set forth, but then he indeed fell. When fallen, Bhīma addressed Dharmarāja Yudhiṣṭhira. (17-2-23)
भो भो राजन्नवेक्षस्व पतितोऽहं प्रियस्तव। किंनिमित्तं च पतनं ब्रूहि मे यदि वेत्थ ह ॥१७-२-२४॥
bho bho rājan navekṣasva patito 'haṃ priyas tava। kiṃ-nimittaṃ ca patanaṃ brūhi me yadi vettha ha॥17-2-24॥
[भो भो (bho bho) - O, O; राजन् (rājan) - O king; नवेक्षस्व (navekṣasva) - look; पतितः (patitaḥ) - fallen; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; प्रियः (priyaḥ) - dear; तव (tava) - to you; किंनिमित्तं (kiṃ-nimittaṃ) - for what reason; च (ca) - and; पतनं (patanaṃ) - fall; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - tell; मे (me) - to me; यदि (yadi) - if; वेत्थ (vettha) - you know; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(O O king, look, fallen I am, dear to you. For what reason and (is this) fall, tell to me, if you know indeed.)
O O king, look upon me—your dear one—fallen. Tell me the reason for this fall, if indeed you know. (17-2-24)
युधिष्ठिर उवाच॥

अतिभुक्तं च भवता प्राणेन च विकत्थसे। अनवेक्ष्य परं पार्थ तेनासि पतितः क्षितौ ॥१७-२-२५॥
atibhuktaṃ ca bhavatā prāṇena ca vikatthase| anavekṣya paraṃ pārtha tenāsi patitaḥ kṣitau ॥17-2-25॥
[अतिभुक्तम् (atibhuktam) - excessively enjoyed; च (ca) - and; भवताभवता (bhavatā) - by you; प्राणेन (prāṇena) - with life; च (ca) - and; विकत्थसे (vikatthase) - you boast; अनवेक्ष्य (anavekṣya) - without considering; परम् (param) - the other (adversary); पार्थ (pārtha) - O Partha (son of Pritha; Arjuna); तेन (tena) - therefore; असि (asi) - you are; पतितः (patitaḥ) - fallen; क्षितौ (kṣitau) - on the ground;]
(Excessively enjoyed and by you, and with life you boast; without considering the other, O Partha, therefore you are fallen on the ground.)
You enjoyed excessively and boasted with your very life, O Partha, without considering the other; therefore, you have fallen to the ground. (17-2-25)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥
vaiśampāyana uvāca॥
[वैशम्पायन (vaiśampāyana) - Vaiśampāyana; (a sage's name); उवाच (uvāca) - said;]

इत्युक्त्वा तं महाबाहुर्जगामानवलोकयन्। श्वा त्वेकोऽनुययौ यस्ते बहुशः कीर्तितो मया ॥१७-२-२६॥
ity uktvā taṃ mahābāhur jagāmānavalokayan. śvā tveko' nuyayau yaste bahuśaḥ kīrtito mayā ॥17-2-26॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; तं (taṃ) - him; महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - the strong-armed; जगाम (jagāma) - went; अनवलोकयन् (anavalokayan) - not looking back; श्वा (śvā) - dog; तु (tu) - but; एकः (ekaḥ) - one; अनुययौ (anuyayau) - followed; यः (yaḥ) - who; ते (te) - to you; बहुशः (bahuśaḥ) - many times; कीर्तितः (kīrtitaḥ) - praised; मया (mayā) - by me;]
(Thus having spoken, the strong-armed (he) went, not looking back at him. The dog, but, one, followed, who, to you, many times, praised by me.)
Having thus spoken, the strong-armed one went on without looking back at him. But only one followed—a dog whom I have often praised to you. (17-2-26)
