ततः संनादयञ्शक्रो दिवं भूमिं च सर्वशः। रथेनोपययौ पार्थमारोहेत्यब्रवीच्च तम् ॥१७-३-१॥
tataḥ saṁnādayañ śakro divaṁ bhūmiṁ ca sarvaśaḥ। rathenopayayau pārtham ārohety abravīc ca tam ॥17-3-1॥

(Then, making heaven and earth resound everywhere, Śakra (Indra) with his chariot approached Pārtha and said to him, "Ascend.")

स भ्रातॄन्पतितान्दृष्ट्वा धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः। अब्रवीच्छोकसन्तप्तः सहस्राक्षमिदं वचः ॥१७-३-२॥

Seeing his brothers fallen, Dharmarāja Yudhishthira, afflicted by grief, spoke these words to Sahasrākṣa (Indra). (17-3-2)
भ्रातरः पतिता मेऽत्र आगच्छेयुर्मया सह। न विना भ्रातृभिः स्वर्गमिच्छे गन्तुं सुरेश्वर ॥१७-३-३॥
bhrātaraḥ patitā me'tra āgaccheyurmayā saha। na vinā bhrātṛbhiḥ svargamicche gantuṃ sureśvara ॥17-3-3॥

(Brothers fallen my here may come with me together. Not without the brothers to heaven I desire to go, O lord of the gods.)
May my fallen brothers come here together with me. O lord of the gods, I do not wish to go to heaven without my brothers. (17-3-3)
सुकुमारी सुखार्हा च राजपुत्री पुरंदर। सास्माभिः सह गच्छेत तद्भवाननुमन्यताम् ॥१७-३-४॥
sukumārī sukhārhā ca rājaputrī puraṃdara। sāsmābhiḥ saha gacchet tadbhavān anumanyatām॥17-3-4॥
[सुकुमारी (sukumārī) - tender maiden; सुखार्हा (sukhārhā) - worthy of happiness; च (ca) - and; राजपुत्री (rājaputrī) - princess (daughter of a king); पुरंदर (puraṃdara) - O Indra (destroyer of cities); सा (sā) - she; अस्माभिः (asmābhiḥ) - with us; सह (saha) - together; गच्छेत (gacchet) - should go; तत् (tad) - therefore; भवान् (bhavān) - your honour; अनुमन्यताम् (anumanyatām) - may approve;]
(Tender maiden, worthy of happiness, and the princess, O Indra; she with us together should go, therefore your honour may approve.)
O Indra, the tender, happiness-deserving princess should go with us; may you kindly grant permission. (17-3-4)

bhrātṝn drakṣyasi putrāṁs tvam agratas tridivaṁ gatān। kṛṣṇayā sahitān sarvān mā śuco bharatarṣabha ॥17-3-5॥

(Brothers you will see, sons you, before in heaven gone; by Kṛṣṇā together with all; do not grieve, O best of the Bharatas.)
You will see your brothers and sons, who have gone to heaven before you, all together with Kṛṣṇā. Do not grieve, O best of the Bharatas. (17-3-5)
निक्षिप्य मानुषं देहं गतास्ते भरतर्षभ। अनेन त्वं शरीरेण स्वर्गं गन्ता न संशयः ॥१७-३-६॥
nikṣipya mānuṣaṃ dehaṃ gatās te bharatarṣabha. anena tvaṃ śarīreṇa svargaṃ gantā na saṃśayaḥ ॥17-3-6॥
[निक्षिप्य (nikṣipya) - having cast off; मानुषं (mānuṣam) - human; देहं (deham) - body; गताः (gatāḥ) - (they) have gone; ते (te) - they; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O bull among the Bharatas; अनेन (anena) - by this; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; शरीरेण (śarīreṇa) - with (this) body; स्वर्गं (svargam) - heaven; गन्ता (gantā) - (you will) go; न (na) - not; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(Having cast off the human body, they have gone, O bull among the Bharatas. By this body you will go to heaven; there is no doubt.)
O best of the Bharatas, they have departed after casting off the human body. By this body, you will go to heaven; there is no doubt. (17-3-6)

अयं श्वा भूतभव्येश भक्तो मां नित्यमेव ह। स गच्छेत मया सार्धमानृशंस्या हि मे मतिः ॥१७-३-७॥
ayaṃ śvā bhūtabhavyeśa bhakto māṃ nityameva ha। sa gacchet mayā sārdham anṛśaṃsyā hi me matiḥ॥17-3-7॥
[अयं (ayaṃ) - this; (he); श्वा (śvā) - dog; भूतभव्येश (bhūtabhavyeśa) - O Lord of past and future; भक्तः (bhaktaḥ) - devoted; (devotee); माम् (mām) - me; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; एव (eva) - indeed; ह (ha) - verily; स (sa) - he; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - should go; मया (mayā) - with me; सार्धम् (sārdham) - together; अनृशंस्या (anṛśaṃsyā) - out of compassion; हि (hi) - indeed; मे (me) - my; मतिः (matiḥ) - thought; (opinion);]
(This dog, O Lord of past and future, devoted (being), me always indeed verily. He should go with me together out of compassion indeed my thought.)
This dog, O Lord of the past and future, is always devoted to me. Truly, my decision is that he should go with me together, out of compassion. (17-3-7)

अमर्त्यत्वं मत्समत्वं च राज; ञ्श्रियं कृत्स्नां महतीं चैव कीर्तिम्। सम्प्राप्तोऽद्य स्वर्गसुखानि च त्वं; त्यज श्वानं नात्र नृशंसमस्ति ॥१७-३-८॥
amartyatvaṃ matsamatvaṃ ca rājan; śriyaṃ kṛtsnāṃ mahatīṃ caiva kīrtim। samprāpto'dya svargasukhāni ca tvaṃ; tyaja śvānaṃ nātra nṛśaṃsam asti॥17-3-8॥
[अमर्त्यत्वं (amartyatvam) - immortality; मत्समत्वं (mat-samatvam) - my-equality; च (ca) - and; राजन् (rājan) - O king; श्रियं (śriyam) - prosperity; कृत्स्नां (kṛtsnām) - entire; महतीं (mahatīm) - great; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; कीर्तिम् (kīrtim) - fame; सम्प्राप्तः (samprāptaḥ) - attained; अद्य (adya) - today; स्वर्गसुखानि (svarga-sukhāni) - heavenly happinesses; च (ca) - and; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; त्यज (tyaja) - abandon; श्वानं (śvānam) - dog; न (na) - not; अत्र (atra) - here; नृशंसम् (nṛśaṃsam) - cruelty; अस्ति (asti) - is;]
(Immortality, my equality and, O king; prosperity entire, great, and indeed, fame. Attained today heavenly happinesses and you. Abandon the dog; not here (is) cruelty.)
O king, you have today attained immortality, equality with me, all prosperity, great fame, and the heavenly pleasures. Abandon the dog; there is no cruelty here. (17-3-8)
युधिष्ठिर उवाच॥

अनार्यमार्येण सहस्रनेत्र; शक्यं कर्तुं दुष्करमेतदार्य। मा मे श्रिया सङ्गमनं तयास्तु; यस्याः कृते भक्तजनं त्यजेयम् ॥१७-३-९॥
anāryam āryeṇa sahasranetra; śakyaṁ kartuṁ duṣkaram etad ārya. mā me śriyā saṅgamanaṁ tayāstu; yasyāḥ kṛte bhaktajanaṁ tyajeyam ॥17-3-9॥
[अनार्यम् (anāryam) - unworthy act; आर्येण (āryeṇa) - by the noble one; सहस्रनेत्र (sahasranetra) - thousand-eyed (Indra); शक्यं (śakyaṁ) - possible; कर्तुं (kartuṁ) - to do; दुष्करम् (duṣkaram) - difficult to perform; एतद् (etad) - this; आर्य (ārya) - O noble one; मा (mā) - do not; मे (me) - for me; श्रिया (śriyā) - with wealth (Lakṣmī); सङ्गमनम् (saṅgamanam) - union; तया (tayā) - with her; अस्तु (astu) - let it be; यस्याः (yasyāḥ) - for whose; कृते (kṛte) - for the sake of; भक्तजनम् (bhaktajanam) - devoted person; त्यजेयम् (tyajeyam) - I may abandon;]
(An unworthy act by the noble one, O thousand-eyed, may be possible to do, this is difficult, O noble one. Do not let union with that Śrī be for me, for whose sake I might abandon a devoted person.)
O thousand-eyed (Indra), even for a noble person, it may be possible to perform an unworthy act, but this is difficult, noble one. Let there not be union for me with that Śrī (wealth), for whose sake I might abandon a devoted person. (17-3-9)

स्वर्गे लोके श्ववतां नास्ति धिष्ण्य; मिष्टापूर्तं क्रोधवशा हरन्ति। ततो विचार्य क्रियतां धर्मराज; त्यज श्वानं नात्र नृशंसमस्ति ॥१७-३-१०॥
svarge loke śvavatāṃ nāsti dhiṣṇya; miṣṭāpūrtaṃ krodhavaśā haranti. tato vicārya kriyatāṃ dharmarāja; tyaja śvānaṃ nātra nṛśaṃsamasti ॥17-3-10॥
[स्वर्गे (svarge) - in heaven; लोके (loke) - in the world; श्ववतां (śvavatām) - of those like (having become) dogs; नास्ति (nāsti) - is not; धिष्ण्य (dhiṣṇya) - seat; heavenly abode; मिष्टापूर्तं (miṣṭāpūrtaṃ) - rites and charities; क्रोधवशा (krodhavaśā) - dominated by anger; हरन्ति (haranti) - remove; ततः (tataḥ) - therefore; विचार्य (vicārya) - pondering; क्रियतां (kriyatāṃ) - should be done; धर्मराज (dharmarāja) - Dharmarāja; O king of Dharma; त्यज (tyaja) - abandon; श्वानं (śvānaṃ) - the dog; नात्र (nātra) - not here; नृशंसमस्ति (nṛśaṃsamasti) - there is cruelty;]
(In heaven, among those who are like dogs, there is no heavenly abode; the rites and charities are removed by those dominated by anger. Therefore, pondering, let it be done, O Dharmarāja; abandon the dog; there is no cruelty here.)
In heaven, there is no place for those who have become like dogs; acts of charity and sacrifice are nullified by anger. Therefore, after considering this, O Dharmarāja, abandon the dog; there is no cruelty here. (17-3-10)

भक्तत्यागं प्राहुरत्यन्तपापं; तुल्यं लोके ब्रह्मवध्याकृतेन। तस्मान्नाहं जातु कथञ्चनाद्य; त्यक्ष्याम्येनं स्वसुखार्थी महेन्द्र ॥१७-३-११॥
bhaktatyāgaṁ prāhur atyantapāpaṁ; tulyaṁ loke brahmavadhyākṛtena। tasmān nāhaṁ jātu kathaṁcanādya; tyakṣyāmy enaṁ svasukhārthī mahendra ॥17-3-11॥
[भक्तत्यागं (bhaktatyāgam) - abandonment of (one's) devotee; प्राहुः (prāhuḥ) - they declare; अत्यन्तपापं (atyantapāpam) - utterly sinful; तुल्यं (tulyam) - equal; लोके (loke) - in the world; ब्रह्मवध्याकृतेन (brahmavadhyākṛtena) - with the act of slaying a Brāhmaṇa; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; न (na) - not; अहम् (aham) - I; जातु (jātu) - ever; कथञ्चन (kathaṁcana) - in any way; आद्य (ādya) - today; त्यक्ष्यामि (tyakṣyāmi) - will abandon; एनम् (enam) - this one; स्वसुखार्थी (svasukhārthī) - for the sake of my own happiness; महेन्द्र (mahendra) - O Mahendra (O great Indra);]
(Abandonment of (one's) devotee, they declare, is utterly sinful; (and is) equal in the world to the act of slaying a Brāhmaṇa. Therefore, I, not ever in any way today, will abandon this one, for the sake of my own happiness, O Mahendra.)
They declare that abandoning a devotee is utterly sinful—equal in the world to killing a Brāhmaṇa. Therefore, O Mahendra, I shall never, in any way, abandon him today for the sake of my own happiness. (17-3-11)

शुना दृष्टं क्रोधवशा हरन्ति; यद्दत्तमिष्टं विवृतमथो हुतं च। तस्माच्छुनस्त्यागमिमं कुरुष्व; शुनस्त्यागात्प्राप्स्यसे देवलोकम् ॥१७-३-१२॥
śunā dṛṣṭaṃ krodhavaśā haranti; yad dattam iṣṭaṃ vivṛtam atho hutaṃ ca. tasmāc chunas tyāgam imaṃ kuruṣva; śunas tyāgāt prāpsyase devalokam ॥17-3-12॥
[शुना (śunā) - by the dog; (instrumental singular of śunī); दृष्टं (dṛṣṭam) - seen; क्रोधवशा (krodhavaśā) - driven by anger; हरन्ति (haranti) - take away; यत् (yat) - which; दत्तम् (dattam) - given; इष्टम् (iṣṭam) - desired; विवृतम् (vivṛtam) - openly (offered); अथो (atho) - and also; हुतं (hutaṃ) - offered in sacrifice; च (ca) - and; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; शुनस्त्यागम् (śunas-tyāgam) - abandonment of the dog; इमं (imaṃ) - this; कुरुष्व (kuruṣva) - do (imperative); शुनस्त्यागात् (śunas-tyāgāt) - from the abandonment of the dog; प्राप्स्यसे (prāpsyase) - you will obtain; देवलोकम् (devalokam) - the world of the gods;]
(By the dog, (whatever is) seen, (the) angry ones take away; which is given, desired, openly (offered), and also sacrificed. Therefore, this abandonment of the dog do; from the abandonment of the dog you will obtain the world of the gods. (17-3-12))
Driven by anger, dogs take away whatever they see—be it given, desired, openly offered, or sacrificed. Therefore, give up this dog; by abandoning the dog, you will attain the world of the gods. (17-3-12)
त्यक्त्वा भ्रातॄन्दयितां चापि कृष्णां; प्राप्तो लोकः कर्मणा स्वेन वीर। श्वानं चैनं न त्यजसे कथं नु; त्यागं कृत्स्नं चास्थितो मुह्यसेऽद्य ॥१७-३-१३॥
tyaktvā bhrātṝndayitāṃ cāpi kṛṣṇāṃ; prāpto lokaḥ karmaṇā svena vīra. śvānaṃ cainaṃ na tyajase kathaṃ nu; tyāgaṃ kṛtsnaṃ cāsthito muhyase'dya ॥17-3-13॥
[त्यक्त्वा (tyaktvā) - having abandoned; भ्रातॄन् (bhrātṝn) - brothers; दयितां (dayitām) - beloved; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; कृष्णां (kṛṣṇām) - Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī); प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - attained; लोकः (lokaḥ) - world; कर्मणा (karmaṇā) - by deed; स्वेन (svena) - by your own; वीर (vīra) - hero; श्वानम् (śvānam) - dog; च (ca) - and; एनम् (enam) - this (dog); न (na) - not; त्यजसे (tyajase) - do you abandon; कथं (kathaṃ) - how; नु (nu) - indeed; त्यागम् (tyāgam) - renunciation; कृत्स्नम् (kṛtsnam) - complete; च (ca) - and; आस्थितः (āsthitaḥ) - having undertaken; मुह्यसे (muhyase) - are you deluded; अद्य (adya) - today;]
(Having abandoned brothers, and also your beloved, Kṛṣṇā, you, hero, have attained the world by your own deed. And this dog, you do not abandon; how indeed, having undertaken complete renunciation, are you deluded today?)
Having left your brothers and your beloved Kṛṣṇā as well, you have, O hero, reached the world by your own deed. Yet you do not leave this dog; how is it that, having taken up total renunciation, you are confused today? (17-3-13)

न विद्यते सन्धिरथापि विग्रहो; मृतैर्मर्त्यैरिति लोकेषु निष्ठा। न ते मया जीवयितुं हि शक्या; तस्मात्त्यागस्तेषु कृतो न जीवताम् ॥१७-३-१४॥
na vidyate sandhir athāpi vigrahaḥ; mṛtaiḥ martyaiḥ iti lokeṣu niṣṭhā. na te mayā jīvayituṃ hi śakyā; tasmāt tyāgaḥ teṣu kṛtaḥ na jīvatām ॥17-3-14॥
[न (na) - not; विद्यते (vidyate) - exists; सन्धिः (sandhiḥ) - union; अथापि (athāpi) - or also; विग्रहः (vigrahaḥ) - conflict; मृतैः (mṛtaiḥ) - with the dead; मर्त्यैरिति (martyaiḥ iti) - with mortals thus; लोकेषु (lokeṣu) - in the worlds; निष्ठा (niṣṭhā) - establishment; न (na) - not; ते (te) - they; मया (mayā) - by me; जीवयितुं (jīvayituṃ) - to revive; हि (hi) - indeed; शक्याः (śakyāḥ) - possible; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; त्यागः (tyāgaḥ) - abandonment; तेषु (teṣu) - of them; कृतः (kṛtaḥ) - has been done; न (na) - not; जीवताम् (jīvatām) - of the living;]
(Not exists union or also conflict; with the dead with mortals thus in the worlds establishment. Not they by me to revive indeed possible; therefore abandonment of them has been done not of the living (17-3-14))
In this world, neither conciliation nor conflict is possible with the dead; thus, among mortals, their end is established. They cannot indeed be revived by me; therefore, abandonment has been made of them—not of the living. (17-3-14)
प्रतिप्रदानं शरणागतस्य; स्त्रिया वधो ब्राह्मणस्वापहारः। मित्रद्रोहस्तानि चत्वारि शक्र; भक्तत्यागश्चैव समो मतो मे ॥१७-३-१५॥
pratipradānaṃ śaraṇāgatasya; striyā vadho brāhmaṇasvāpahāraḥ। mitradrohastāni catvāri śakra; bhaktatyāgaścaiva samo mato me॥17-3-15॥

अभिजातोऽसि राजेन्द्र पितुर्वृत्तेन मेधया। अनुक्रोशेन चानेन सर्वभूतेषु भारत ॥१७-३-१७॥

(Formerly in the Dvaita forest and you have been tested by me, son; for the sake of water, where your brothers who ventured out were slain.)
Once, in the Dvaita forest, you were tested by me, O son, where, for the sake of water, your brothers who went forth were slain. (17-3-18)
भीमार्जुनौ परित्यज्य यत्र त्वं भ्रातरावुभौ। मात्रोः साम्यमभीप्सन्वै नकुलं जीवमिच्छसि ॥१७-३-१९॥
bhīmārjunau parityajya yatra tvaṁ bhrātarāvubhau। mātroḥ sāmyam abhīpsan vai nakulaṁ jīvam icchasi ॥17-3-19॥

(Bhīma and Arjuna having abandoned, where you, both brothers, of the mothers equality desiring indeed, Nakula's life you desire.)
Where, having abandoned Bhīma and Arjuna, you, indeed desiring equality between the two mothers, wish for Nakula's life. (17-3-19)
अयं श्वा भक्त इत्येव त्यक्तो देवरथस्त्वया। तस्मात्स्वर्गे न ते तुल्यः कश्चिदस्ति नराधिप ॥१७-३-२०॥
ayaṁ śvā bhakta ity-eva tyakto deva-rathas-tvayā। tasmāt svarge na te tulyaḥ kaścid asti narādhipa ॥17-3-20॥
[अयं (ayaṁ) - this; श्वा (śvā) - dog; भक्तः (bhaktaḥ) - devoted; इति (iti) - thus; एव (eva) - only; त्यक्तः (tyaktaḥ) - abandoned; देवरथः (devarathaḥ) - divine chariot; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; स्वर्गे (svarge) - in heaven; न (na) - not; ते (te) - to you; तुल्यः (tulyaḥ) - equal; कश्चित् (kaścit) - anyone; अस्ति (asti) - exists; नराधिप (narādhipa) - O lord of men;]
(This dog, devoted, thus only, was abandoned; the divine chariot by you. Therefore, in heaven, not to you, equal, anyone exists, O lord of men.)
This dog, being truly devoted, was abandoned for the sake of the divine chariot by you; therefore, O lord of men, in heaven there is none equal to you. (17-3-20)
अतस्तवाक्षया लोकाः स्वशरीरेण भारत। प्राप्तोऽसि भरतश्रेष्ठ दिव्यां गतिमनुत्तमाम् ॥१७-३-२१॥
atas-tavākṣayā lokāḥ sva-śarīreṇa bhārata। prāpto'si bharata-śreṣṭha divyāṃ gatim-anuttamām ॥17-3-21॥
[अतः (ataḥ) - therefore; तव (tava) - your; अक्षया (akṣayā) - imperishable; लोकाः (lokāḥ) - worlds; स्वशरीरेण (sva-śarīreṇa) - with one's own body; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - attained; असि (asi) - you are; भरतश्रेष्ठ (bharata-śreṣṭha) - O best of the Bharatas; दिव्याम् (divyām) - divine; गतिम् (gatim) - state; अनुत्तमाम् (anuttamām) - unsurpassed;]
(Therefore, your imperishable worlds, with one's own body, O Bhārata. Attained you are, O best of the Bharatas, the unsurpassed divine state.)
Therefore, O Bhārata, with your own body, you have attained to the imperishable worlds, O best of the Bharatas, the unsurpassed divine state. (17-3-21)
ततो धर्मश्च शक्रश्च मरुतश्चाश्विनावपि। देवा देवर्षयश्चैव रथमारोप्य पाण्डवम् ॥१७-३-२२॥
tato dharmaś ca śakraś ca marutaś cāśvināv api। devā devarṣayaś caiva ratham āropya pāṇḍavam ॥17-3-22॥

(Then Dharma, and Indra, and the Maruts, and also the Ashvins, the gods, and the divine sages indeed, having placed the Pāṇḍava upon the chariot.)
Then Dharma, Indra, the Maruts, the Ashvins, the gods, and the divine sages placed Yudhishthira (the Pāṇḍava) upon the chariot. (17-3-22)
प्रययुः स्वैर्विमानैस्ते सिद्धाः कामविहारिणः। सर्वे विरजसः पुण्याः पुण्यवाग्बुद्धिकर्मिणः ॥१७-३-२३॥
prayayuḥ svairvimānaiste siddhāḥ kāmavihāriṇaḥ। sarve virajasaḥ puṇyāḥ puṇyavāgbuddhikarmiṇaḥ ॥17-3-23॥
[प्रययुः (prayayuḥ) - departed; went; स्वैः (svaiḥ) - by their own; by their respective; विमानैः (vimānaiḥ) - chariots; celestial vehicles; ते (te) - they; सिद्धाः (siddhāḥ) - perfected beings; accomplished ones; कामविहारिणः (kāmavihāriṇaḥ) - moving at will; enjoying as they wish; सर्वे (sarve) - all; विरजसः (virajasaḥ) - free from passion; without impurity; पुण्याः (puṇyāḥ) - virtuous; meritorious; पुण्यवाक् (puṇyavāk) - having pure speech; virtuous in words; बुद्धिकर्मिणः (buddhikarmiṇaḥ) - acting with intelligence; who perform deeds with wisdom;]
(Departed by their own chariots they, the perfected beings, enjoying as they wish. All free from passion, virtuous, virtuous in speech, acting with intelligence.)
They, the perfected beings, departed in their own celestial chariots, enjoying at will. All were free from passion, virtuous, pure in speech, and wise in action. (17-3-23)
स तं रथं समास्थाय राजा कुरुकुलोद्वहः। ऊर्ध्वमाचक्रमे शीघ्रं तेजसावृत्य रोदसी ॥१७-३-२४॥
sa taṃ rathaṃ samāsthāya rājā kurukulodvahaḥ। ūrdhvamācakrame śīghraṃ tejasāvṛtya rodasī ॥17-3-24॥
[स (sa) - he; तं (taṃ) - that; रथं (rathaṃ) - chariot; समास्थाय (samāsthāya) - having mounted; having ascended; राजा (rājā) - the king; कुरुकुलोद्वहः (kurukulodvahaḥ) - the foremost of the Kuru lineage; ऊर्ध्वम् (ūrdhvam) - upwards; आचक्रमे (ācakrame) - ascended; went; शीघ्रं (śīghraṃ) - quickly; तेजसा (tejasā) - by brilliance; by light; आवृत्य (āvṛtya) - having enveloped; having covered; रोदसी (rodasī) - the two worlds (heaven and earth);]
(He, having mounted that chariot, the king, the foremost of the Kuru lineage, upwards ascended quickly, having enveloped the two worlds with brilliance.)
Having mounted that chariot, the king—the foremost of the Kuru lineage—quickly ascended upwards, enveloping both heaven and earth in brilliance. (17-3-24)
ततो देवनिकायस्थो नारदः सर्वलोकवित्। उवाचोच्चैस्तदा वाक्यं बृहद्वादी बृहत्तपाः ॥१७-३-२५॥
tato devanīkāyastho nāradaḥ sarvalokavit | uvācoccais tadā vākyaṃ bṛhadvādī bṛhattapāḥ ॥17-3-25॥

(Then, standing among the hosts of gods, Nārada, knower of all worlds, said in a loud voice, his speech great, one of great penance.)
Then Nārada, standing among the hosts of the gods and knowing all worlds, spoke in a loud voice, he whose words are great and who is of great penance. (17-3-25)
येऽपि राजर्षयः सर्वे ते चापि समुपस्थिताः। कीर्तिं प्रच्छाद्य तेषां वै कुरुराजोऽधितिष्ठति ॥१७-३-२६॥
ye'pi rājarṣayaḥ sarve te cāpi samupasthitāḥ। kīrtiṃ pracchādya teṣāṃ vai kururājo'dhitiṣṭhati ॥17-3-26॥
[येऽपि (ye'pi) - who also; राजर्षयः (rājarṣayaḥ) - royal sages; सर्वे (sarve) - all; ते (te) - they; चापि (cāpi) - and also; समुपस्थिताः (samupasthitāḥ) - have assembled; कीर्तिं (kīrtiṃ) - fame; प्रच्छाद्य (pracchādya) - covering; तेषां (teṣāṃ) - of them; वै (vai) - indeed; कुरुराजः (kururājaḥ) - the Kuru king; अधितिष्ठति (adhitiṣṭhati) - presides;]
(Who also, all royal sages, they and also have assembled. Fame, covering, of them, indeed, the Kuru king presides.)
All these royal sages too have assembled here. Yet, covering their fame, indeed, the Kuru king presides over them. (17-3-26)
लोकानावृत्य यशसा तेजसा वृत्तसम्पदा। स्वशरीरेण सम्प्राप्तं नान्यं शुश्रुम पाण्डवात् ॥१७-३-२७॥
lokānāvṛtya yaśasā tejasā vṛttasampadā। svaśarīreṇa samprāptaṃ nānyaṃ śuśruma pāṇḍavāt॥17-3-27॥
[लोकान्-आवृत्य (lokān-āvṛtya) - having encompassed the worlds; यशसा (yaśasā) - with fame; तेजसा (tejasā) - with splendor; वृत्तसम्पदा (vṛttasampadā) - with excellence of conduct; स्वशरीरेण (svaśarīreṇa) - by one's own body; सम्प्राप्तं (samprāptaṃ) - attained; न (na) - not; अन्यं (anyaṃ) - other; शुश्रुम (śuśruma) - we have heard; पाण्डवात् (pāṇḍavāt) - from the Pāṇḍava;]
(Having encompassed the worlds with fame, with splendor, with excellence of conduct, by one's own body attained—not other we have heard from the Pāṇḍava.)
We have not heard of anyone other than the Pāṇḍava who, by his own deeds, encompassing the worlds with fame, splendor, and excellence of conduct, has attained this.
नारदस्य वचः श्रुत्वा राजा वचनमब्रवीत्। देवानामन्त्र्य धर्मात्मा स्वपक्षांश्चैव पार्थिवान् ॥१७-३-२८॥
nāradasya vacaḥ śrutvā rājā vacanam abravīt। devān amantrya dharmātmā svapakṣāṁś caiva pārthivān॥17-3-28॥
[नारदस्य (nāradasya) - of Nārada;’ वचः (vacaḥ) - words;’ श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard;’ राजा (rājā) - the king;’ वचनम् (vacanam) - speech;’ अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke;’ देवान् (devān) - the gods;’ अमन्त्र्य (amantrya) - having addressed;’ धर्मात्मा (dharmātmā) - righteous-souled;’ स्वपक्षान् (svapakṣān) - his own supporters;’ च (ca) - and;’ एव (eva) - indeed;’ पार्थिवान् (pārthivān) - the kings;’;]
(Having heard the words of Nārada, the king spoke speech. Having addressed the gods, the righteous-souled (one), indeed, his own supporters and kings.)
Hearing the words of Nārada, the king spoke. After addressing the gods, the righteous king also addressed his own supporters and the other kings. (17-3-28)
शुभं वा यदि वा पापं भ्रातॄणां स्थानमद्य मे। तदेव प्राप्तुमिच्छामि लोकानन्यान्न कामये ॥१७-३-२९॥
śubhaṁ vā yadi vā pāpaṁ bhrātṝṇāṁ sthānam adya me। tad eva prāptum icchāmi lokān anyān na kāmaye ॥17-3-29॥
[शुभं (śubham) - auspicious; good; benefic; वा (vā) - or; यदि (yadi) - if; वा (vā) - or; पापं (pāpam) - sin; evil; bad; भ्रातॄणां (bhrātṝṇām) - of brothers; स्थानम् (sthānam) - place; position; अद्य (adya) - today; now; मे (me) - to me; for me; तत् (tat) - that; एव (eva) - indeed; only; प्राप्तुम् (prāptum) - to obtain; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I desire; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; अन्यान् (anyān) - other; different; न (na) - not; कामये (kāmaye) - I desire;]
(Auspicious or if or sin, the place of brothers today for me, that indeed to obtain I desire, worlds other not I desire.)
Whether good or evil, whatever is the place of my brothers today, that alone I desire to obtain; I do not wish for any other worlds. (17-3-29)
राज्ञस्तु वचनं श्रुत्वा देवराजः पुरंदरः। आनृशंस्यसमायुक्तं प्रत्युवाच युधिष्ठिरम् ॥१७-३-३०॥
rājñas tu vacanaṃ śrutvā devarājaḥ puraṃdaraḥ। ānṛśaṃsyasamāyuktaṃ pratyuvāca yudhiṣṭhiram ॥17-3-30॥

(But having heard the king's word, the lord of the gods, Purandara, endowed with compassion, responded to Yudhishthira.)
But when he heard the king's words, the lord of the gods, Purandara (Indra), full of compassion, replied to Yudhishthira. (17-3-30)
स्थानेऽस्मिन्वस राजेन्द्र कर्मभिर्निर्जिते शुभैः। किं त्वं मानुष्यकं स्नेहमद्यापि परिकर्षसि ॥१७-३-३१॥
sthāne'smin vasa rājendra karmabhir nirjite śubhaiḥ। kiṁ tvaṁ mānuṣyakaṁ sneham adyāpi parikarṣasi ॥17-3-31॥
[स्थाने (sthāne) - appropriately; rightly; अस्मिन् (asmin) - in this; वस (vasa) - dwell; reside; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; कर्मभिः (karmabhiḥ) - by actions; निर्जिते (nirjite) - conquered; शुभैः (śubhaiḥ) - auspicious; किम् (kim) - why; त्वम् (tvam) - you; मानुष्यकम् (mānuṣyakam) - human; स्नेहम् (sneham) - affection; अद्यापि (adyāpi) - even now; परिकर्षसि (parikarṣasi) - you drag along; १७-३-३१ (17-3-31) - (verse number);]
(Rightly, in this, reside, O king, by actions conquered auspicious; why you human affection even now you drag along.)
O King, rightly dwell here, where auspicious deeds have been accomplished; why do you still harbor human affection even now and allow it to trouble you? (17-3-31)
सिद्धिं प्राप्तोऽसि परमां यथा नान्यः पुमान्क्वचित्। नैव ते भ्रातरः स्थानं सम्प्राप्ताः कुरुनन्दन ॥१७-३-३२॥
siddhiṁ prāpto'si paramāṁ yathā nānyaḥ pumānkvacit। naiva te bhrātaraḥ sthānaṁ samprāptāḥ kurunandana ॥17-3-32॥
[सिद्धिं (siddhiṁ) - success; प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - attained; असि (asi) - you are; परमां (paramāṁ) - supreme; यथा (yathā) - as; न (na) - not; अन्यः (anyaḥ) - other; पुमान् (pumān) - man; क्वचित् (kvacit) - anywhere; नैव (na eva) - indeed not; ते (te) - your; भ्रातरः (bhrātaraḥ) - brothers; स्थानं (sthānam) - position; सम्प्राप्ताः (samprāptāḥ) - have attained; कुरुनन्दन (kurunandana) - O joy of the Kurus;]
(Success supreme you have attained, as not another man anywhere. Indeed not your brothers the position have attained, O joy of the Kurus.)
You alone have attained supreme success, such as no other man anywhere has attained. Your brothers have not reached this position, O joy of the Kurus. (17-3-32)
अद्यापि मानुषो भावः स्पृशते त्वां नराधिप। स्वर्गोऽयं पश्य देवर्षीन्सिद्धांश्च त्रिदिवालयान् ॥१७-३-३३॥
adyāpi mānuṣo bhāvaḥ spṛśate tvāṃ narādhipa। svargo'yaṃ paśya devarṣīn siddhāṃś ca tridivalayān ॥17-3-33॥
[अद्यापि (adyāpi) - even now; मानुषः (mānuṣaḥ) - human; भावः (bhāvaḥ) - state; स्पृशते (spṛśate) - touches; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; नराधिप (narādhipa) - O king (lord of men); स्वर्गः (svargaḥ) - heaven; अयम् (ayam) - this; पश्य (paśya) - see; देवर्षीन् (devarṣīn) - divine sages; सिद्धान् (siddhān) - accomplished (beings); च (ca) - and; त्रिदिवालयान् (tridivalayān) - inhabitants of heaven;]
(Even now the human state touches you, O king. This is heaven; see the divine sages and accomplished ones and the dwellers of heaven.)

युधिष्ठिरस्तु देवेन्द्रमेवंवादिनमीश्वरम्। पुनरेवाब्रवीद्धीमानिदं वचनमर्थवत् ॥१७-३-३४॥

(But Yudhishthira, to Devendra, having thus spoken, the lord, again indeed spoke, the wise one, these words, full of meaning.)
But wise Yudhishthira addressed these meaningful words again to Lord Devendra, who had thus spoken. (17-3-34)
तैर्विना नोत्सहे वस्तुमिह दैत्यनिबर्हण। गन्तुमिच्छामि तत्राहं यत्र मे भ्रातरो गताः ॥१७-३-३५॥
tair vinā notsahe vastu miha daitya-nibarhaṇa। gantum icchāmi tatra ahaṃ yatra me bhrātaraḥ gatāḥ॥17-3-35॥
[तैः (tair) - by them; विना (vinā) - without; न (na) - not; उत्सहे (utsahe) - am able; वस्तुम् (vastum) - to stay; इह (iha) - here; दैत्यनिबर्हण (daitya-nibarhaṇa) - O destroyer of Daityas; गन्तुम् (gantum) - to go; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I wish; तत्र (tatra) - there; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; यत्र (yatra) - where; मे (me) - my; भ्रातरः (bhrātaraḥ) - brothers; गताः (gatāḥ) - have gone;]
(By them without not am able to stay here, O destroyer of Daityas. To go I wish there I where my brothers have gone.)
O destroyer of Daityas, without them I am not able to stay here; I wish to go there where my brothers have gone. (17-3-35)
यत्र सा बृहती श्यामा बुद्धिसत्त्वगुणान्विता। द्रौपदी योषितां श्रेष्ठा यत्र चैव प्रिया मम ॥१७-३-३६॥
yatra sā bṛhatī śyāmā buddhi-sattva-guṇānvitā. draupadī yoṣitāṃ śreṣṭhā yatra caiva priyā mama ॥17-3-36॥

("Where she, tall, dark-complexioned, endowed with qualities of intelligence and character, Draupadī, the foremost of women; where also indeed my beloved." (17-3-36))
"Where she is, tall and dark-skinned, possessing intelligence and noble qualities—Draupadī, the foremost among women—where also is my beloved." (17-3-36)
