svargaṃ triviṣṭapaṃ prāpya mama pūrvapitāmahāḥ। pāṇḍavā dhārtarāṣṭrāś ca kāni sthānāni bhejire ॥18-1-1॥

एतदिच्छाम्यहं श्रोतुं सर्वविच्चासि मे मतः। महर्षिणाभ्यनुज्ञातो व्यासेनाद्भुतकर्मणा ॥१८-१-२॥
etadicchāmyahaṃ śrotuṃ sarvaviccāsi me mataḥ। maharṣiṇābhyanujñāto vyāsenādbhutakarmaṇā ॥18-1-2॥

svargaṃ triviṣṭapaṃ prāpya tava pūrvapitāmahāḥ। yudhiṣṭhiraprabhṛtayo yad akurvata tac chṛṇu॥18-1-3॥

स्वर्गं त्रिविष्टपं प्राप्य धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः। दुर्योधनं श्रिया जुष्टं ददर्शासीनमासने ॥१८-१-४॥

भ्राजमानमिवादित्यं वीरलक्ष्म्याभिसंवृतम्। देवैर्भ्राजिष्णुभिः साध्यैः सहितं पुण्यकर्मभिः ॥१८-१-५॥
bhrājamānam ivādityaṃ vīralakṣmyābhisaṃvṛtam। devair bhrājiṣṇubhiḥ sādhyaiḥ sahitaṃ puṇyakarmabhiḥ॥18-1-5॥

(Shining like the sun, enveloped by hero's splendor, together with shining gods and Sādhyas, by those of virtuous deeds.)
Shining like the sun, enveloped in heroic splendor, and accompanied by radiant gods and Sādhyas, all who perform virtuous deeds. (18-1-5)
ततो युधिष्ठिरो दृष्ट्वा दुर्योधनममर्षितः। सहसा संनिवृत्तोऽभूच्छ्रियं दृष्ट्वा सुयोधने ॥१८-१-६॥
tato yudhiṣṭhiro dṛṣṭvā duryodhanam amarṣitaḥ. sahasā saṃnivṛtto'bhūc chriyaṃ dṛṣṭvā suyodhane ॥18-1-6॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhiṣṭhira; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; दुर्योधनम् (duryodhanam) - Duryodhana; अमर्षितः (amarṣitaḥ) - agitated; / overcome by indignation; सहसा (sahasā) - suddenly; संनिवृत्तः (saṃnivṛttaḥ) - retreated; / drew back; अभूत् (abhūt) - became; श्रियं (śriyam) - splendor; / fortune; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; सुयोधने (suyodhane) - in Suyodhana (Duryodhana);]
(Then Yudhiṣṭhira, having seen Duryodhana, agitated, suddenly retreated, having seen the splendor in Suyodhana (Duryodhana).)
Then Yudhiṣṭhira, seeing Duryodhana, became agitated and suddenly drew back on noticing the splendor residing in Suyodhana (Duryodhana). (18-1-6)
ब्रुवन्नुच्चैर्वचस्तान्वै नाहं दुर्योधनेन वै। सहितः कामये लोकाँल्लुब्धेनादीर्घदर्शिना ॥१८-१-७॥
bruvann uccair vacas tān vai nāhaṃ duryodhanena vai. sahitaḥ kāmaye lokān lubdhena ā dīrghadarśinā ॥18-1-7॥
[ब्रुवन् (bruvan) - speaking; उच्चैः (uccaiḥ) - loudly; वचः (vacaḥ) - words; तान् (tān) - those; वै (vai) - indeed; न (na) - not; अहम् (aham) - I; दुर्योधनेन (duryodhanena) - with Duryodhana; वै (vai) - indeed; सहितः (sahitaḥ) - together; कामये (kāmaye) - desire; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; लुब्धेन (lubdhena) - by the greedy one; आ (ā) - even with; दीर्घदर्शिना (dīrghadarśinā) - by the farsighted;]
(Speaking loudly those words indeed, not I, with Duryodhana indeed, together desire worlds by the greedy one, even with the farsighted.)
Indeed, speaking those words loudly, I do not desire to be together with Duryodhana, nor do I wish for worlds gained with the greedy one, even if he is farsighted. (18-1-7)
यत्कृते पृथिवी सर्वा सुहृदो बान्धवास्तथा। हतास्माभिः प्रसह्याजौ क्लिष्टैः पूर्वं महावने ॥१८-१-८॥
yat-kṛte pṛthivī sarvā suhṛdaḥ bāndhavās tathā | hatāsmābhiḥ prasahyājau kliṣṭaiḥ pūrvaṃ mahāvane ॥18-1-8॥
[यत्कृते (yat-kṛte) - for whose sake; पृथिवी (pṛthivī) - the whole earth; सर्वा (sarvā) - entire; सुहृदो (suhṛdaḥ) - friends; बान्धवाः (bāndhavāḥ) - relatives; तथा (tathā) - likewise; हताः (hatāḥ) - were slain; अस्माभिः (asmābhiḥ) - by us; प्रसह्य (prasahya) - by overpowering; आजौ (ājau) - in battle; क्लिष्टैः (kliṣṭaiḥ) - troubled (ones); पूर्वं (pūrvam) - previously; महावने (mahāvane) - in the great forest;]
(For whose sake the entire earth, friends and relatives likewise, by us by overpowering in battle, the troubled ones, previously in the great forest, were slain.)
For whose sake the whole earth, as well as friends and relatives, were slain by us—having overpowered troubled ones in battle, previously in the great forest. (18-1-8)
द्रौपदी च सभामध्ये पाञ्चाली धर्मचारिणी। परिक्लिष्टानवद्याङ्गी पत्नी नो गुरुसंनिधौ ॥१८-१-९॥
draupadī ca sabhāmadhye pāñcālī dharmacāriṇī। parikliṣṭānavadyāṅgī patnī no guru-saṃnidhau ॥18-1-9॥
[द्रौपदी (draupadī) - Draupadī; (proper noun, wife of the Pāṇḍavas); च (ca) - and; सभामध्ये (sabhāmadhye) - in the midst of the assembly; पाञ्चाली (pāñcālī) - daughter of the king of Pañcāla; (synonym for Draupadī); धर्मचारिणी (dharmacāriṇī) - one who follows dharma; परिक्लिष्टा (parikliṣṭā) - afflicted; अनवद्याङ्गी (anavadyāṅgī) - of flawless limbs; पत्नी (patnī) - wife; नः (naḥ) - our; गुरुसंनिधौ (guru-saṃnidhau) - in the presence of elders;]
(Draupadī and in the midst of the assembly, the Pāñcālī, one who follows dharma, afflicted, of flawless limbs, wife our in the presence of elders.)
Draupadī, the virtuous wife from Pañcāla, flawless and afflicted, was in the midst of the assembly before our elders. (18-1-9)
स्वस्ति देवा न मे कामः सुयोधनमुदीक्षितुम्। तत्राहं गन्तुमिच्छामि यत्र ते भ्रातरो मम ॥१८-१-१०॥
svasti devā na me kāmaḥ suyodhanam-udīkṣitum। tatrāhaṁ gantum-icchāmi yatra te bhrātaro mama॥18-1-10॥
[स्वस्ति (svasti) - well-being; salutations; देवा (devā) - O gods; न (na) - not; मे (me) - to me; कामः (kāmaḥ) - desire; सुयोधनम् (suyodhanam) - Suyodhana (Duryodhana, proper noun, accusative singular); उदीक्षितुम् (udīkṣitum) - to behold; तत्र (tatra) - there; अहं (ahaṁ) - I; गन्तुम् (gantum) - to go; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I wish; यत्र (yatra) - where; ते (te) - your; भ्रातरः (bhrātaraḥ) - brothers; मम (mama) - my;]
(Well-being O gods not to me desire Suyodhana to behold. There I wish to go where your brothers my.)
O gods, I have no desire to see Suyodhana. I wish to go there where your brothers, my own, are. (18-1-10)
मैवमित्यब्रवीत्तं तु नारदः प्रहसन्निव। स्वर्गे निवासो राजेन्द्र विरुद्धं चापि नश्यति ॥१८-१-११॥
maivam ity abravīt taṁ tu nāradaḥ prahasann iva. svarge nivāso rājeṃdra viruddhaṃ cāpi naśyati ॥18-1-11॥
[मैवम् (maivam) - not thus; इति (iti) - thus; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; तं (taṁ) - to him; तु (tu) - but; नारदः (nāradaḥ) - Nārada; प्रहसन्निव (prahasann iva) - smiling as if; स्वर्गे (svarge) - in heaven; निवासः (nivāsaḥ) - residence; राजेन्द्र (rājeṃdra) - O king; विरुद्धं (viruddham) - opposed; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; नश्यति (naśyati) - is destroyed;]
(Not thus—so said to him but Nārada, smiling as if. In heaven, residence, O king, opposed also is destroyed. (18-1-11))
“Not so,” said Nārada to him, smiling as if. O king, dwelling in heaven and what is opposed to it are also destroyed. (18-1-11)
युधिष्ठिर महाबाहो मैवं वोचः कथञ्चन। दुर्योधनं प्रति नृपं शृणु चेदं वचो मम ॥१८-१-१२॥
yudhiṣṭhira mahābāho maivaṃ vocaḥ kathaṃcana। duryodhanaṃ prati nṛpaṃ śṛṇu cedaṃ vaco mama ॥18-1-12॥
[युधिष्ठिर (yudhiṣṭhira) - Yudhiṣṭhira; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed; मैवं (maivaṃ) - do not thus; वोचः (vocaḥ) - speak; कथञ्चन (kathaṃcana) - in any manner; दुर्योधनं (duryodhanam) - Duryodhana; प्रति (prati) - to; नृपं (nṛpam) - king; शृणु (śṛṇu) - listen; च (ca) - and; इदं (idaṃ) - this; वचः (vacaḥ) - word; मम (mama) - my;]
(Yudhiṣṭhira, O mighty-armed, do not thus speak in any manner; to Duryodhana the king listen and this word of mine.)
O mighty-armed Yudhiṣṭhira, do not speak thus in any manner; listen to this word of mine addressed to King Duryodhana. (18-1-12)
एष दुर्योधनो राजा पूज्यते त्रिदशैः सह। सद्भिश्च राजप्रवरैर्य इमे स्वर्गवासिनः ॥१८-१-१३॥
eṣa duryodhanaḥ rājā pūjyate tridaśaiḥ saha। sadbhiś ca rājapravaraiḥ ya ime svargavāsinaḥ ॥18-1-13॥
[एष (eṣa) - this; दुर्योधनः (duryodhanaḥ) - Duryodhana; राजा (rājā) - king; पूज्यते (pūjyate) - is honored; त्रिदशैः (tridaśaiḥ) - by the gods (the thirty-three deities); सह (saha) - together with; सद्भिः (sadbhiḥ) - by the good; च (ca) - and; राजप्रवरैः (rājapravaraiḥ) - by eminent kings; य (ya) - who; इमे (ime) - these; स्वर्गवासिनः (svargavāsinaḥ) - residing in heaven;]
(This Duryodhana, the king, is honored by the gods together with, and by the good and eminent kings, who these reside in heaven.)
This king Duryodhana is being honored by the gods along with the noble and eminent kings who dwell in heaven. (18-1-13)
वीरलोकगतिं प्राप्तो युद्धे हुत्वात्मनस्तनुम्। यूयं सर्वे सुरसमा येन युद्धे समासिताः ॥१८-१-१४॥
vīralokagatiṃ prāpto yuddhe hutvātmanaḥ tanum। yūyaṃ sarve surasamā yena yuddhe samāsitāḥ ॥18-1-14॥
[वीरलोकगतिं (vīralokagatim) - the course to the world of heroes; प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - has attained; युद्धे (yuddhe) - in battle; हुत्वा (hutvā) - having offered; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of his own; तनुम् (tanum) - body; यूयम् (yūyam) - you; सर्वे (sarve) - all; सुरसमा (surasamā) - equal to the gods; येना (yena) - by whom; युद्धे (yuddhe) - in battle; समासिताः (samāsitāḥ) - have been united (brought together);]
(Having attained the course to the world of heroes, having offered his own body in battle, you all, by whom in battle were assembled, are equal to the gods.)
He has attained the path to the world of heroes, having offered his own body in battle; you all, who were brought together in battle by him, are equal to the gods. (18-1-14)
स एष क्षत्रधर्मेण स्थानमेतदवाप्तवान्। भये महति योऽभीतो बभूव पृथिवीपतिः ॥१८-१-१५॥
sa eṣa kṣatradharmeṇa sthānam etad avāptavān। bhaye mahati yo’bhīto babhūva pṛthivīpatiḥ॥18-1-15॥
[स (sa) - he; एष (eṣa) - this one; क्षत्रधर्मेण (kṣatradharmeṇa) - by the duty of a kṣatriya; स्थानम् (sthānam) - station; place; status; एतत् (etad) - this; अवाप्तवान् (avāptavān) - has attained; भये (bhaye) - in danger; in fear; महति (mahati) - great; यः (yaḥ) - who; अभीतः (abhītaḥ) - undaunted; fearless; बभूव (babhūva) - became; पृथिवीपतिः (pṛthivīpatiḥ) - king; lord of the earth;]
(He this one by the duty of a kṣatriya this place has attained. In great danger who fearless became the king.)
He, indeed, through the duty of a kṣatriya has attained this position; in great danger, he who was fearless became the king. (18-1-15)
न तन्मनसि कर्तव्यं पुत्र यद्द्यूतकारितम्। द्रौपद्याश्च परिक्लेशं न चिन्तयतुमर्हसि ॥१८-१-१६॥
na tanmanasi kartavyaṃ putra yaddyūtakāritam। draupadyāśca parikleśaṃ na cintayitumarhasi ॥18-1-16॥
[न (na) - not; तन्मनसि (tan-manasi) - that in the mind; कर्तव्यम् (kartavyam) - ought to be done; to be made; पुत्र (putra) - son; यत् (yat) - which; द्यूतकारितम् (dyūta-kāritam) - caused by dice-playing; द्रौपद्याः (draupadyāḥ) - of Draupadī; च (ca) - and; परिक्लेशम् (parikleśam) - great affliction; न (na) - not; चिन्तयितुम् (cintayitum) - to think; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you should;]
(Not that in the mind ought to be done, son, which was caused by dice-playing. The great affliction of Draupadī also, you should not think.)
Son, you should not dwell on that which was caused by the game of dice, nor should you think about the suffering of Draupadī. (18-1-16)
ये चान्येऽपि परिक्लेशा युष्माकं द्यूतकारिताः। सङ्ग्रामेष्वथ वान्यत्र न तान्संस्मर्तुमर्हसि ॥१८-१-१७॥
ye cānye'pi parikleśā yuṣmākaṃ dyūtakāritāḥ। saṅgrāmeṣv atha vā anyatra na tān saṃsmartum arhasi॥18-1-17॥
[ये (ye) - which; (those which;) च (ca) - and; अन्ये (anye) - others; अपि (api) - also; परिक्लेशा (parikleśāḥ) - afflictions; युष्माकं (yuṣmākam) - of you; (your;) द्यूतकारिताः (dyūtakāritāḥ) - caused by gambling; सङ्ग्रामेषु (saṅgrāmeṣu) - in battles; अथ (atha) - or; वा (vā) - or; अन्यत्र (anyatra) - elsewhere; न (na) - not; तान् (tān) - them; संस्मर्तुम् (saṃsmartum) - to remember; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought;]
(Which and other also afflictions of you caused by gambling, in battles or else or elsewhere, not them to remember you ought.)
And the other afflictions of yours, caused by gambling, whether in battles or elsewhere, those you ought not to remember. (18-1-17)
समागच्छ यथान्यायं राज्ञा दुर्योधनेन वै। स्वर्गोऽयं नेह वैराणि भवन्ति मनुजाधिप ॥१८-१-१८॥
samāgaccha yathā-nyāyaṁ rājñā duryodhanena vai। svargo'yaṁ neha vairāṇi bhavanti manujādhipa॥18-1-18॥
[समागच्छ (samāgaccha) - come together; meet; assemble; यथा (yathā) - as; according to; न्यायं (nyāyam) - proper conduct; law; justice; राज्ञा (rājñā) - by the king; दुर्योधनेन (duryodhanena) - by Duryodhana; वै (vai) - indeed; truly; स्वर्गः (svargaḥ) - heaven; अयम् (ayam) - this; न (na) - not; इह (iha) - here; वैराणि (vairāṇi) - enmities; hostilities; भवन्ति (bhavanti) - exist; become; मनुजाधिप (manujādhipa) - O ruler of men;]
(Come together as proper, by the king Duryodhana indeed. Heaven, this; not here enmities exist, O ruler of men.)
Come together properly as invited by King Duryodhana. This is heaven; here enmities do not exist, O ruler of men. (18-1-18)
नारदेनैवमुक्तस्तु कुरुराजो युधिष्ठिरः। भ्रातॄन्पप्रच्छ मेधावी वाक्यमेतदुवाच ह ॥१८-१-१९॥
nāradenaivamuktastu kururājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। bhrātṝnpapraccha medhāvī vākyametaduvāca ha ॥18-1-19॥
[नारदेन (nāradena) - by Nārada; एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - addressed; तु (tu) - but; कुरुराजः (kururājaḥ) - the king of the Kurus; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhiṣṭhira; भ्रातॄन् (bhrātṝn) - (his) brothers; पप्रच्छ (papraccha) - asked; मेधावी (medhāvī) - the wise one; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - speech; एतत् (etat) - this; उवाच (uvāca) - spoke; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(But Yudhiṣṭhira, the king of the Kurus, addressed thus by Nārada, asked (his) brothers, the wise one indeed spoke this speech.)
Thus addressed by Nārada, Yudhiṣṭhira, the wise king of the Kurus, asked his brothers and spoke these words. (18-1-19)
यदि दुर्योधनस्यैते वीरलोकाः सनातनाः। अधर्मज्ञस्य पापस्य पृथिवीसुहृदद्रुहः ॥१८-१-२०॥
yadi duryodhanasyai te vīralokāḥ sanātanāḥ. adharmājñasya pāpasya pṛthivīsuhṛdadruhaḥ ॥18-1-20॥

(If, of Duryodhana, these hero-realms are eternal—of one ignorant of righteousness, sinful, betrayer of the friend of the earth;)
If these eternal realms of heroes belong to Duryodhana, who is ignorant of righteousness, sinful, and the betrayer of the friend of the earth; (18-1-20)
यत्कृते पृथिवी नष्टा सहया सरथद्विपा। वयं च मन्युना दग्धा वैरं प्रतिचिकीर्षवः ॥१८-१-२१॥
yatkṛte pṛthivī naṣṭā sahayā sarathadvipā। vayaṃ ca manyunā dagdhā vairaṃ praticikīrṣavaḥ ॥18-1-21॥
[यत्कृते (yat-kṛte) - for whose sake; पृथिवी (pṛthivī) - earth; नष्टा (naṣṭā) - destroyed; सहया (sahayā) - with allies; सरथद्विपा (sa-ratha-dvipā) - with chariots and elephants; वयं (vayaṃ) - we; च (ca) - and; मन्युना (manyunā) - by wrath; दग्धा (dagdhā) - burned; वैरं (vairaṃ) - hostility; प्रतिचिकीर्षवः (praticikīrṣavaḥ) - wishing to retaliate;]
(For whose sake earth destroyed with allies, with chariots and elephants; we also by wrath burned, wishing to retaliate hostility.)
For whose sake the earth, together with its allies, chariots and elephants, was destroyed, and we too have been consumed by wrath, desiring to retaliate the enmity. (18-1-21)
ये ते वीरा महात्मानो भ्रातरो मे महाव्रताः। सत्यप्रतिज्ञा लोकस्य शूरा वै सत्यवादिनः ॥१८-१-२२॥
ye te vīrā mahātmāno bhrātaro me mahāvratāḥ। satyapratijñā lokasya śūrā vai satyavādinaḥ॥18-1-22॥

(Who those heroes, high-souled, brothers my, great observers of vows, truthful in promise, of the world, valiant indeed, truth-speakers.)
These heroes, who are my brothers, are high-souled, strict followers of great vows, truthful in promise, famous in the world as valiant men, and indeed, speakers of truth. (18-1-22)
तेषामिदानीं के लोका द्रष्टुमिच्छामि तानहम्। कर्णं चैव महात्मानं कौन्तेयं सत्यसङ्गरम् ॥१८-१-२३॥
teṣām idānīṃ ke lokā draṣṭum icchāmi tān aham। karṇaṃ caiva mahātmānaṃ kaunteyaṃ satyasaṅgaram॥18-1-23॥
[तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; इदानीम् (idānīṃ) - now; के (ke) - which; लोका (lokā) - worlds; द्रष्टुम् (draṣṭum) - to see; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I wish; तान् (tān) - them; अहम् (aham) - I; कर्णम् (karṇam) - Karna; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; महात्मानम् (mahātmānam) - the great-souled; कौन्तेयम् (kaunteyam) - the son of Kunti; सत्यसङ्गरम् (satyasaṅgaram) - truth-adhering;]
(Of them, now, which worlds to see do I wish, them I; Karna and indeed the great-souled, the son of Kunti, truth-adhering.)
Now, I wish to see which worlds belong to them—Karna, and also the great-souled, the son of Kunti, steadfast in truth. (18-1-23)
धृष्टद्युम्नं सात्यकिं च धृष्टद्युम्नस्य चात्मजान्। ये च शस्त्रैर्वधं प्राप्ताः क्षत्रधर्मेण पार्थिवाः ॥१८-१-२४॥
dhṛṣṭadyumnaṃ sātyakiṃ ca dhṛṣṭadyumnasya ca ātmajān | ye ca śastrair vadhaṃ prāptāḥ kṣatradharmeṇa pārthivāḥ ॥18-1-24॥

(Dhṛṣṭadyumna, Sātyaki and Dhṛṣṭadyumna's sons, and the kings who by weapons death attained, by kṣatriya-dharma.)

क्व नु ते पार्थिवा ब्रह्मन्नैतान्पश्यामि नारद। विराटद्रुपदौ चैव धृष्टकेतुमुखांश्च तान् ॥१८-१-२५॥
kva nu te pārthivā brahman naitān paśyāmi nārada. virāṭadrupadau caiva dhṛṣṭaketumukhāṁś ca tān ॥18-1-25॥

(Where indeed are your kings, O brāhman? These I do not see, O Nārada—Virāṭa and Drupada also, Dhṛṣṭaketu and the rest, and them.)

शिखण्डिनं च पाञ्चाल्यं द्रौपदेयांश्च सर्वशः। अभिमन्युं च दुर्धर्षं द्रष्टुमिच्छामि नारद ॥१८-१-२६॥
