neha paśyāmi vibudhā rādheyam amitaujasaṃ| bhrātarau ca mahātmānau yudhāmanyūttamaujasaū ॥18-2-1॥

O gods, here I do not see Rādheya of immeasurable energy, nor the two great-souled brothers, Yudhāmanyu and Uttamaujas. (18-2-1)
जुहुवुर्ये शरीराणि रणवह्नौ महारथाः। राजानो राजपुत्राश्च ये मदर्थे हता रणे ॥१८-२-२॥
juhuvur ye śarīrāṇi raṇavahnau mahārathāḥ। rājāno rājaputrāś ca ye madarthe hatā raṇe ॥18-2-2॥

क्व ते महारथाः सर्वे शार्दूलसमविक्रमाः। तैरप्ययं जितो लोकः कच्चित्पुरुषसत्तमैः ॥१८-२-३॥

(Where are your great chariot-warriors, all equal in prowess to tigers? By those also, this world has surely been conquered by the foremost among men.)
Where are all your great chariot-warriors, whose valor equals that of tigers? Has this world also truly been conquered by those foremost among men? (18-2-3)
यदि लोकानिमान्प्राप्तास्ते च सर्वे महारथाः। स्थितं वित्त हि मां देवाः सहितं तैर्महात्मभिः ॥१८-२-४॥
yadi lokān imān prāptās te ca sarve mahārathāḥ। sthitaṁ vitta hi māṁ devāḥ sahitaṁ tair mahātmabhiḥ॥18-2-4॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; (accusative plural of loka); इमान् (imān) - these; प्राप्ताः (prāptāḥ) - have attained; ते (te) - they; च (ca) - and; सर्वे (sarve) - all; महारथाः (mahārathāḥ) - great chariot-warriors; स्थितं (sthitaṁ) - established; वित्त (vitta) - know; हि (hi) - indeed; माम् (mām) - me; देवाः (devāḥ) - gods; सहितं (sahitaṁ) - together with; तैः (taiḥ) - with them; महात्मभिः (mahātmabhiḥ) - with the great-souled;]
(If these worlds have been attained by them, all the great warriors, know indeed me, the gods together with those great-souled.)
If all these great warriors have attained these worlds, know that I, along with the gods and those great souls, am established (there). (18-2-4)
कच्चिन्न तैरवाप्तोऽयं नृपैर्लोकोऽक्षयः शुभः। न तैरहं विना वत्स्ये ज्ञातिभिर्भ्रातृभिस्तथा ॥१८-२-५॥
kaccinna tairavāpto'yaṁ nṛpairloko'kṣayaḥ śubhaḥ। na tairahaṁ vinā vatsye jñātibhirbhrātṛbhistathā॥18-2-5॥
[कच्चित् (kaccit) - whether; न (na) - not; तैः (taiḥ) - by them; अवाप्तः (avāptaḥ) - obtained; अयम् (ayam) - this; नृपैः (nṛpaiḥ) - by kings; लोकः (lokaḥ) - world; अक्षयः (akṣayaḥ) - imperishable; शुभः (śubhaḥ) - auspicious; न (na) - not; तैः (taiḥ) - with them; अहं (ahaṁ) - I; विना (vinā) - without; वत्स्ये (vatsye) - will stay; ज्ञातिभिः (jñātibhiḥ) - with relatives; भ्रातृभिः (bhrātṛbhiḥ) - with brothers; तथा (tathā) - similarly;]
(Whether or not this imperishable and auspicious world has been obtained by those kings; I will not live with relatives and brothers without them.)
I hope those kings have indeed attained this imperishable and auspicious world; without them, I will not remain, even among my own kinsmen and brothers. (18-2-5)
मातुर्हि वचनं श्रुत्वा तदा सलिलकर्मणि। कर्णस्य क्रियतां तोयमिति तप्यामि तेन वै ॥१८-२-६॥
mātur hi vacanaṃ śrutvā tadā salila-karmaṇi। karṇasya kriyatāṃ toyam iti tapyāmi tena vai ॥18-2-6॥

(Of the mother indeed speech having heard, then in the water-rite, 'of Karṇa let water be offered' thus I am pained by that indeed.)
Having heard indeed the words of my mother, then, during the water-rite, (her words) 'Let water be offered for Karṇa', I am truly pained by that. (18-2-6)
इदं च परितप्यामि पुनः पुनरहं सुराः। यन्मातुः सदृशौ पादौ तस्याहममितौजसः ॥१८-२-७॥
idaṁ ca paritapyāmi punaḥ punarahaṁ surāḥ। yanmātuḥ sadṛśau pādau tasyāhamamitaujasaḥ॥18-2-7॥
[इदं (idaṁ) - this; च (ca) - and; परितप्यामि (paritapyāmi) - I am tormented; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; अहम् (aham) - I; सुराः (surāḥ) - O gods; यत् (yat) - because; मातुः (mātuḥ) - mother's; सदृशौ (sadṛśau) - like; पादौ (pādau) - feet (two); तस्य (tasya) - his; अहम् (aham) - I; अमितौजसः (amitaujasaḥ) - of immeasurable energy;]
(This and am tormented again and again, O gods; because mother's like feet his I of immeasurable energy.)
I am tormented again and again by this, O gods, for though I am of immeasurable energy, I am like my mother's feet to him. (18-2-7)
दृष्ट्वैव तं नानुगतः कर्णं परबलार्दनम्। न ह्यस्मान्कर्णसहिताञ्जयेच्छक्रोऽपि संयुगे ॥१८-२-८॥
dṛṣṭvaiva taṃ nānugataḥ karṇaṃ parabalārdanam। na hyasmān karṇasahitān jayet śakro'pi saṃyuge ॥18-2-8॥
[दृष्ट्वा एव (dṛṣṭvā eva) - having seen indeed; तं (taṃ) - him; न अनुगतः (na anugataḥ) - did not follow; कर्णं (karṇam) - Karna; परबलार्दनम् (parabalārdanam) - destroyer of the enemy's forces; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; अस्मान् (asmān) - us; कर्ण-सहितान् (karṇa-sahitān) - with Karna (joined with); जयेत् (jayet) - could conquer; शक्रः अपि (śakraḥ api) - Indra even; संयुगे (saṃyuge) - in battle;]
(Indeed, having seen him, did not follow Karna, the destroyer of the enemy's forces. Not indeed us, with Karna (joined), could even Indra conquer in battle.)
Truly, having seen him, he did not follow Karna, the destroyer of enemy hosts. Not even Indra could conquer us, together with Karna, in battle. (18-2-8)
तमहं यत्रतत्रस्थं द्रष्टुमिच्छामि सूर्यजम्। अविज्ञातो मया योऽसौ घातितः सव्यसाचिना ॥१८-२-९॥
tam ahaṃ yatra tatra-sthaṃ draṣṭum icchāmi sūryajam। avijñāto mayā yo'sau ghātitaḥ savyasācinā ॥18-2-9॥
[तम् (tam) - him; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; यत्रतत्रस्थं (yatra-tatra-stham) - existing here and there; द्रष्टुम् (draṣṭum) - to see; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - desire; सूर्यजम् (sūryajam) - son of the Sun; अविज्ञातः (avijñātaḥ) - unrecognized; मया (mayā) - by me; यः (yaḥ) - who; असौ (asau) - that one; घातितः (ghātitaḥ) - slain; सव्यसाचिना (savyasācinā) - by Savyasācī (Arjuna);]
(Him I, existing here and there, desire to see, the son of the Sun; unrecognized by me, that one who was slain by Savyasācī.)
I wish to see him, the son of the Sun, who, being unrecognized by me and present somewhere, was slain by Savyasācī (Arjuna). (18-2-9)
भीमं च भीमविक्रान्तं प्राणेभ्योऽपि प्रियं मम। अर्जुनं चेन्द्रसङ्काशं यमौ तौ च यमोपमौ ॥१८-२-१०॥
bhīmaṃ ca bhīmavikrāntaṃ prāṇebhyo'pi priyaṃ mama। arjunaṃ cendra-saṅkāśaṃ yamau tau ca yamopamau ॥18-2-10॥
[भीमं (bhīmam) - Bhīma; च (ca) - and; भीमविक्रान्तं (bhīma-vikrāntam) - of terrible prowess; प्राणेभ्यः (prāṇebhyaḥ) - than lives; अपि (api) - even; प्रियं (priyam) - dear; मम (mama) - to me; अर्जुनं (arjunam) - Arjuna; च (ca) - and; इन्द्रसङ्काशं (indra-saṅkāśam) - equal to Indra; यमौ (yamau) - the two sons of Yama; तौ (tau) - those two; च (ca) - and; यमोपमौ (yama-upamau) - equal to Yama;]
(Bhīma and of terrible prowess, dearer to me than (my) lives; Arjuna too, equal to Indra; the two sons of Yama, those two and equal to Yama.)
Bhīma, who is of terrible prowess and dearer to me than my own life; Arjuna, who is like Indra; and the two sons of Yama, who are equal to Yama—these (are my sons). (18-2-10)
द्रष्टुमिच्छामि तां चाहं पाञ्चालीं धर्मचारिणीम्। न चेह स्थातुमिच্ছामि सत्यमेतद्ब्रवीमि वः ॥१८-२-११॥
draṣṭum icchāmi tāṃ ca ahaṃ pāñcālīṃ dharmacāriṇīm। na ca iha sthātum icchāmi satyam etat bravīmi vaḥ॥18-2-11॥
[द्रष्टुम् (draṣṭum) - to see; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I wish; ताम् (tām) - her; च (ca) - and; अहम् (aham) - I; पाञ्चालीम् (pāñcālīm) - Pañcālī (Draupadī); धर्मचारिणीम् (dharmacāriṇīm) - one who follows dharma; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; इह (iha) - here; स्थातुम् (sthātum) - to remain; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I wish; सत्यं (satyam) - truth; एतत् (etat) - this; ब्रवीमि (bravīmi) - I speak; वः (vaḥ) - to you;]
(To see I wish her and I, Pañcālī, who follows dharma. Not and here to remain I wish. Truth this I speak to you. (18-2-11))

किं मे भ्रातृविहीनस्य स्वर्गेण सुरसत्तमाः। यत्र ते स मम स्वर्गो नायं स्वर्गो मतो मम ॥१८-२-१२॥
kiṁ me bhrātṛ-vihīnasya svargeṇa surasattamāḥ। yatra te sa mama svargo nāyaṁ svargo mato mama॥18-2-12॥
[किं (kiṁ) - what; मे (me) - for me; भ्रातृविहीनस्य (bhrātṛ-vihīnasya) - of one deprived of brother; स्वर्गेण (svargeṇa) - with heaven; सुरसत्तमाः (surasattamāḥ) - O best of gods; यत्र (yatra) - where; ते (te) - you; स (sa) - he; मम (mama) - my; स्वर्गः (svargaḥ) - heaven; न (na) - not; अयम् (ayam) - this; स्वर्गः (svargaḥ) - heaven; मतः (mataḥ) - (is) considered; मम (mama) - by me;]
(What for me, of one deprived of brother, with heaven, O best of gods? Where you, he (is), my heaven, not this heaven (is) considered by me.)
O best of gods, what use is heaven to me, one who is without his brother? Wherever he is, that is my heaven; this is not regarded as heaven by me. (18-2-12)

यदि वै तत्र ते श्रद्धा गम्यतां पुत्र माचिरम्। प्रिये हि तव वर्तामो देवराजस्य शासनात् ॥१८-२-१३॥
yadi vai tatra te śraddhā gamyatāṃ putra māciram। priye hi tava vartāmo devarājasya śāsanāt॥18-2-13॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; वै (vai) - indeed; तत्र (tatra) - there; ते (te) - your; श्रद्धा (śraddhā) - faith; गम्यताम् (gamyatām) - let (it) go; पुत्र (putra) - son; माचिरम् (māciram) - do not delay; प्रिये (priye) - dear one; हि (hi) - indeed; तव (tava) - of you; वर्तामः (vartāmaḥ) - we abide; देवराजस्य (devarājasya) - of the king of the gods; शासनात् (śāsanāt) - under (his) command;]
(If indeed there your faith, let it go, son, do not delay. Dear one, indeed, by your (wish) we abide, under the command of the king of the gods.)
If, indeed, you have faith there, let it go, my son, do not delay. Dear one, truly, we remain here according to the command of the king of the gods. (18-2-13)

(Thus having said him then the gods the divine messenger they instructed: 'Of Yudhishthira the friends show'—O scorcher of foes.)

ततः कुन्तीसुतो राजा देवदूतश्च जग्मतुः। सहितौ राजशार्दूल यत्र ते पुरुषर्षभाः ॥१८-२-१५॥
tataḥ kuntīsuto rājā devadūtaś ca jagmatuḥ। sahitau rājaśārdūla yatra te puruṣarṣabhāḥ ॥18-2-15॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; from that; कुन्ती-सुतः (kuntī-sutaḥ) - Kunti's son; राजा (rājā) - king; देव-दूतः (deva-dūtaḥ) - divine messenger; च (ca) - and; जग्मतुः (jagmatuḥ) - (they) went; सहितौ (sahitau) - together; राज-शार्दूल (rāja-śārdūla) - O tiger among kings; यत्र (yatra) - where; ते (te) - those; पुरुष-अर्षभाः (puruṣa-arṣabhāḥ) - bulls among men;]
(Then Kunti's son, the king, and the divine messenger went together, O tiger among kings, where those bulls among men (were).)

अग्रतो देवदूतस्तु ययौ राजा च पृष्ठतः। पन्थानमशुभं दुर्गं सेवितं पापकर्मभिः ॥१८-२-१६॥
agrato devadūtas tu yayau rājā ca pṛṣṭhataḥ। panthānam aśubhaṃ durgaṃ sevitaṃ pāpakarmabhiḥ ॥18-2-16॥

The messenger of the gods went ahead, but the king followed behind, (along) a difficult and inauspicious path, frequented by those who perform evil deeds. (18-2-16)
तमसा संवृतं घोरं केशशैवलशाद्वलम्। युक्तं पापकृतां गन्धैर्मांसशोणितकर्दमम् ॥१८-२-१७॥
tamasā saṁvṛtaṁ ghoraṁ keśa-śaivalya-śādvalam। yuktaṁ pāpakṛtāṁ gandhair māṁsa-śoṇita-kardamam ॥18-2-17॥
[तमसा (tamasā) - by darkness; संवृतं (saṁvṛtam) - covered; घोरं (ghoram) - terrible; केशशैवलशाद्वलम् (keśa-śaivalya-śādvalam) - with matted hair, seaweed and moss; युक्तं (yuktam) - endowed; पापकृतां (pāpakṛtām) - of evil-doers; गन्धैः (gandhaiḥ) - with smells; मांसशोणितकर्दमम् (māṁsa-śoṇita-kardamam) - mud of flesh and blood;]

अस्थिकेशसमाकीर्णं कृमिकीटसमाकुलम्। ज्वलनेन प्रदीप्तेन समन्तात्परिवेष्टितम् ॥१८-२-१९॥
asthikeśasamākīrṇaṃ kṛmikīṭasamākulam। jvalanena pradīptena samantāt pariveṣṭitam ॥18-2-19॥

medo-rudhira-yuktaiś ca chinna-bāhu-uru-pāṇibhiḥ। nikṛtta-udara-pādaiś ca tatra tatra praveritaiḥ ॥18-2-21॥
[मेद (meda) - fat; रुधिरयुक्तैः (rudhira-yuktaiḥ) - joined with blood; च (ca) - and; छिन्नबाहूरुपाणिभिः (chinna-bāhu-uru-pāṇibhiḥ) - with severed arms, thighs, and hands; निकृत्तोदरपादैः (nikṛtta-udara-pādaiḥ) - with cut-open bellies and feet; च (ca) - and; तत्र तत्र (tatra tatra) - here and there; प्रवेरितैः (praveritaiḥ) - cast about;]
(And with fat joined with blood, with severed arms, thighs, and hands, and with cut-open bellies and feet, here and there cast about.)
There, fat mixed with blood, together with severed arms, thighs, hands, bellies, and feet, was cast all about here and there. (18-2-21)
स तत्कुणपदुर्गन्धमशिवं रोमहर्षणम्। जगाम राजा धर्मात्मा मध्ये बहु विचिन्तयन् ॥१८-२-२२॥
sa tat-kuṇapa-dur-gandham aśivam roma-harṣaṇam। jagāma rājā dharmātmā madhye bahu vicintayan ॥18-2-22॥
[स (sa) - he; तत्-कुणप-दुर्गन्धम् (tat-kuṇapa-dur-gandham) - that-corpse-bad odor; अशिवम् (aśivam) - inauspicious; रोमहर्षणम् (roma-harṣaṇam) - hair-raising; जगाम (jagāma) - went; राजा (rājā) - king; धर्मात्मा (dharmātmā) - one whose soul is virtue; righteous; मध्ये (madhye) - in the midst; बहु (bahu) - much; greatly; विचिन्तयन् (vicintayan) - thinking;]
(He that corpse-bad odor inauspicious hair-raising went king righteous in the midst much thinking.)
He, the righteous king, while thinking much in the midst, went towards that corpse with its inauspicious, foul odor and hair-raising nature. (18-2-22)
ददर्शोष्णोदकैः पूर्णां नदीं चापि सुदुर्गमाम्। असिपत्रवनं चैव निशितक्षुरसंवृतम् ॥१८-२-२३॥
dadarśoṣṇodakaiḥ pūrṇāṃ nadīṃ cāpi sudurgamām। asipatravanaṃ caiva niśitakṣurasaṃvṛtam ॥18-2-23॥
[ददर्श (dadarśa) - he saw; उष्णोदकैः (uṣṇodakaiḥ) - with hot waters; पूर्णां (pūrṇām) - filled; नदीं (nadīṃ) - river; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; सुदुर्गमाम् (sudurgamām) - very difficult to cross; असिपत्रवनं (asipatravanam) - forest of sword-leaves; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; निशितक्षुरसंवृतम् (niśitakṣurasaṃvṛtam) - covered with sharp razors;]
(He saw a river filled with hot waters and also very difficult to cross; and indeed a forest of sword-leaves covered with sharp razors.)
He saw a river filled with hot water, very hard to cross, and a sword-leaf forest covered everywhere with sharp razors. (18-2-23)
करम्भवालुकास्तप्ता आयसीश्च शिलाः पृथक्। लोहकुम्भीश्च तैलस्य क्वाथ्यमानाः समन्ततः ॥१८-२-२४॥
karambhavālukās taptā āyasīś ca śilāḥ pṛthak। lohakumbhīś ca tailasya kvāthyamānāḥ samantataḥ ॥18-2-24॥

(Grain-paste sands heated, and iron stones separately; and iron cauldrons of oil boiling all around.)
Heated sand mixed with grain-paste, and separately iron stones; and iron cauldrons filled with boiling oil all around. (18-2-24)
कूटशाल्मलिकं चापि दुस्पर्शं तीक्ष्णकण्टकम्। ददर्श चापि कौन्तेयो यातनाः पापकर्मिणाम् ॥१८-२-२५॥
kūṭaśālmalikaṃ cāpi dusparśaṃ tīkṣṇakaṇṭakam। dadarśa cāpi kaunteyo yātanāḥ pāpakarmiṇām॥18-2-25॥

(The spiked śālmalī tree, also difficult to touch, having sharp thorns; and he also saw, the son of Kuntī, torments of evil-doers.)
The son of Kuntī (Arjuna) also saw the spiked śālmalī tree, difficult to touch and covered with sharp thorns, as well as the torments inflicted upon evil-doers. (18-2-25)
स तं दुर्गन्धमालक्ष्य देवदूतमुवाच ह। कियदध्वानमस्माभिर्गन्तव्यमिदमीदृशम् ॥१८-२-२६॥
sa taṁ durgandham ālakṣya devadūtam uvāca ha। kiyad adhvānam asmābhiḥ gantavyam idam īdṛśam ॥18-2-26॥

(He, having perceived that bad smell, said indeed to the divine messenger: How great a distance such as this is to be gone by us?)
Having noticed the foul smell, he said to the divine messenger: "How much of such a path remains for us to go?" (18-2-26)
क्व च ते भ्रातरो मह्यं तन्ममाख्यातुमर्हसि। देशोऽयं कश्च देवानामेतदिच्छामि वेदितुम् ॥१८-२-२७॥
kva ca te bhrātaro mahyaṃ tan-mamākhyātum arhasi। deśo'yaṃ kaś ca devānām etad icchāmi veditum ॥18-2-27॥
[क्व (kva) - where; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - your; भ्रातरः (bhrātaraḥ) - brothers; मह्यम् (mahyaṃ) - to me; तत् (tat) - that; मम (mama) - to me; आख्यातुम् (ākhyātum) - to tell; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought; देशः (deśaḥ) - place; अयम् (ayam) - this; कः (kaḥ) - what; च (ca) - and; देवानाम् (devānām) - of the gods; एतत् (etat) - this; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I wish; वेदितुम् (veditum) - to know;]
(Where and your brothers to me that to me to tell you ought. Place this what and of the gods this I wish to know.)
Where are your brothers? You ought to tell me that. What is this place of the gods? I wish to know this. (18-2-27)
स संनिववृते श्रुत्वा धर्मराजस्य भाषितम्। देवदूतोऽब्रवीच्चैनमेतावद्गमनं तव ॥१८-२-२८॥
sa saṁnivavṛte śrutvā dharmarājasya bhāṣitam। devadūto'bravīcchainametāvadgamanaṁ tava ॥18-2-28॥
[स (sa) - he; संनिववृते (saṁnivavṛte) - withdrew; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; धर्मराजस्य (dharmarājasya) - of Dharmarāja; भाषितम् (bhāṣitam) - the speech; देवदूतः (devadūtaḥ) - the divine messenger; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke; च (ca) - and; एनम् (enam) - to him; एतावत् (etāvat) - thus far; गमनम् (gamanaṁ) - going; journey; तव (tava) - your;]
(He withdrew having heard the speech of Dharmarāja. The divine messenger spoke to him: 'Thus far is your journey.' (18-2-28))
He withdrew after hearing Dharmarāja’s words. The divine messenger said to him, 'Your journey goes only this far.' (18-2-28)
निवर्तितव्यं हि मया तथास्म्युक्तो दिवौकसैः। यदि श्रान्तोऽसि राजेन्द्र त्वमथागन्तुमर्हसि ॥१८-२-२९॥
nivartitavyaṃ hi mayā tathāsmyukto divaukasaiḥ. yadi śrānto'si rājendra tvamathāgantumarhasi ॥18-2-29॥
[निवर्तितव्यम् (nivartitavyam) - must return; हि (hi) - for; मया (mayā) - by me; तथा (tathā) - thus; अस्मि उक्तः (asmi uktaḥ) - I am (have been) told; दिवौकसैः (divaukasaiḥ) - by the dwellers of heaven (gods); यदि (yadi) - if; श्रान्तः (śrāntaḥ) - tired; असि (asi) - you are; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अथ (atha) - then; आगन्तुम् (āgantum) - to come; अर्हसि (arhasi) - are worthy;]
(I must return, for by me thus told by the dwellers of heaven. If tired you are, O king, you then to come are worthy.)
I must return, for I have thus been told by the gods. If you are tired, O king, then you may come. (18-2-29)
युधिष्ठिरस्तु निर्विण्णस्तेन गन्धेन मूर्छितः। निवर्तने धृतमनाः पर्यावर्तत भारत ॥१८-२-३०॥
yudhiṣṭhiras tu nirviṇṇas tena gandhena mūrcchitaḥ। nivartane dhṛtamanāḥ paryāvartata bhārata॥18-2-30॥
[युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhiṣṭhira; (proper noun; son of Dharma); तु (tu) - but; निर्विण्णः (nirviṇṇaḥ) - dispirited; disheartened; तेन (tena) - by that; गन्धेन (gandhena) - by the smell; by the scent; मूर्छितः (mūrcchitaḥ) - fainted; swooned; निवर्तने (nivartane) - in turning back; in returning; धृतमनाः (dhṛtamanāḥ) - resolute in mind; with firm resolve; पर्यावर्तत (paryāvartata) - turned back; returned; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; (descendant of Bharata; vocative);]
(Yudhiṣṭhira but dispirited by that smell fainted. In turning back, resolute in mind, turned back, O Bhārata.)
But Yudhiṣṭhira, O Bhārata, dispirited and fainted by that smell, having resolved to turn back, returned. (18-2-30)
स संनिवृत्तो धर्मात्मा दुःखशोकसमन्वितः। शुश्राव तत्र वदतां दीना वाचः समन्ततः ॥१८-२-३१॥
sa saṁnivṛtto dharmātmā duḥkhaśokasamanvitaḥ। śuśrāva tatra vadatāṁ dīnā vācaḥ samantataḥ॥18-2-31॥
[स (sa) - he; संनिवृत्तः (saṁnivṛttaḥ) - having returned; धर्मात्मा (dharmātmā) - righteous-souled one; दुःखशोकसमन्वितः (duḥkhaśokasamanvitaḥ) - filled with pain and sorrow; शुश्राव (śuśrāva) - he heard; तत्र (tatra) - there; वदतां (vadatām) - of those speaking; दीना (dīnā) - distressed; वाचः (vācaḥ) - words; समन्ततः (samantataḥ) - from all sides;]
(He, having returned, a righteous-souled one, filled with pain and sorrow, heard there the words of the distressed ones speaking from all sides.)
He, having returned—a righteous man filled with pain and sorrow—heard there, from all sides, the words of the distressed as they spoke. (18-2-31)
भो भो धर्मज राजर्षे पुण्याभिजन पाण्डव। अनुग्रहार्थमस्माकं तिष्ठ तावन्मुहूर्तकम् ॥१८-२-३२॥
bho bho dharmaja rājarṣe puṇyābhijana pāṇḍava। anugrahārthamasmākaṁ tiṣṭha tāvanmuhūrtakam ॥18-2-32॥
[भो भो (bho bho) - O! O!; धर्मज (dharmaja) - born of dharma; राजर्षे (rājarṣe) - O royal sage; पुण्याभिजन (puṇyābhijana) - of auspicious lineage; पाण्डव (pāṇḍava) - O Pāṇḍava; अनुग्रहार्थम् (anugrahārtham) - for favor; अस्माकं (asmākam) - for us; तिष्ठ (tiṣṭha) - stay; तावन्मुहूर्तकम् (tāvanmuhūrtakam) - so long as a moment;]
(O! O! born of dharma, O royal sage, of auspicious lineage, O Pāṇḍava, for favor for us, stay so long as a moment.)
O dharma-born, royal sage of virtuous lineage, O Pāṇḍava, please stay at least for a moment out of compassion for us. (18-2-32)
आयाति त्वयि दुर्धर्षे वाति पुण्यः समीरणः। तव गन्धानुगस्तात येनास्मान्सुखमागमत् ॥१८-२-३३॥
āyāti tvayi durdharṣe vāti puṇyaḥ samīraṇaḥ। tava gandhānugastāta yenāsmān sukham āgamat॥18-2-33॥
[आयाति (āyāti) - comes; त्वयि (tvayi) - unto you; दुर्धर्षे (durdharṣe) - O irresistable one; वाति (vāti) - blows; पुण्यः (puṇyaḥ) - auspicious; समीरणः (samīraṇaḥ) - breeze; तव (tava) - of you; गन्धानुगः (gandhānugaḥ) - following fragrance; तात (tāta) - dear (sir); येन (yena) - by which; अस्मान् (asmān) - to us; सुखम् (sukham) - happiness; आगमत् (āgamat) - came;]
(Comes unto you, O irresistable one, blows auspicious breeze; of you, following fragrance, dear sir, by which to us happiness came.)
O irresistable one, a holy breeze comes to you, blowing and carrying your fragrance, dear sir; by which happiness has come to us. (18-2-33)
ते वयं पार्थ दीर्घस्य कालस्य पुरुषर्षभ। सुखमासादयिष्यामस्त्वां दृष्ट्वा राजसत्तम ॥१८-२-३४॥
te vayaṃ pārtha dīrghasya kālasya puruṣarṣabha। sukham āsādayiṣyāmas tvāṃ dṛṣṭvā rājasattama ॥18-2-34॥
[ते (te) - they; वयम् (vayam) - we; पार्थ (pārtha) - O Pārtha; दीर्घस्य (dīrghasya) - of long; कालस्य (kālasya) - of time; पुरुषर्षभ (puruṣarṣabha) - bull among men; सुखम् (sukham) - happiness; आसादयिष्यामः (āsādayiṣyāmaḥ) - we shall obtain; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; राजसत्तम (rājasattama) - best of kings;]
(they we O Pārtha of long of time bull among men happiness we shall obtain you having seen best of kings)
O Pārtha, best of kings, having seen you after a long time, we shall obtain happiness. (18-2-34)
सन्तिष्ठस्व महाबाहो मुहूर्तमपि भारत। त्वयि तिष्ठति कौरव्य यातनास्मान्न बाधते ॥१८-२-३५॥
santiṣṭhasva mahābāho muhūrtam api bhārata। tvayi tiṣṭhati kauravya yātanā asmān na bādhate ॥18-2-35॥
[सन्तिष्ठस्व (santiṣṭhasva) - stand; remain; (imperative); महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed; मुहूर्तम् (muhūrtam) - for a moment; अपि (api) - even; at least; भारत (bhārata) - O descendant of Bharata; त्वयि (tvayi) - upon you; in you; तिष्ठति (tiṣṭhati) - remains; abides; कौरव्य (kauravya) - O Kaurava; यातना (yātanā) - pain; torment; अस्मान् (asmān) - us; न (na) - not; बाधते (bādhate) - afflicts; troubles;]
(Stand, O mighty-armed, at least for a moment, O Bharata. While you abide, O Kaurava, pain does not afflict us.)
O mighty-armed Bharata, remain for even a moment. O Kaurava, while you stay, sorrow does not trouble us. (18-2-35)
एवं बहुविधा वाचः कृपणा वेदनावताम्। तस्मिन्देशे स शुश्राव समन्ताद्वदतां नृप ॥१८-२-३६॥
evaṃ bahuvidhā vācaḥ kṛpaṇā vedanāvatām। tasmiṃdeśe sa śuśrāva samantādvadatāṃ nṛpa ॥18-2-36॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; बहुविधा (bahuvidhā) - of many kinds; वाचः (vācaḥ) - words; कृपणा (kṛpaṇā) - pitiful; वेदनावताम् (vedanāvatām) - of those possessed of suffering; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; देशे (deśe) - place; स (sa) - he; शुश्राव (śuśrāva) - heard; समन्तात् (samantāt) - from all sides; वदताम् (vadatām) - of those speaking; नृप (nṛpa) - king;]
(Thus, words of many kinds, pitiful, of those possessing suffering, in that place, he, heard from all sides, of those speaking, the king.)
Thus, in that place, the king heard from all sides the pitiful words of many kinds uttered by those suffering. (18-2-36)
तेषां तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा दयावान्दीनभाषिणाम्। अहो कृच्छ्रमिति प्राह तस्थौ स च युधिष्ठिरः ॥१८-२-३७॥
teṣāṃ tadvacanaṃ śrutvā dayāvān dīna-bhāṣiṇām। aho kṛcchram iti prāha tasthau sa ca yudhiṣṭhiraḥ॥18-2-37॥
[तेषां (teṣām) - of them; तद्वचनं (tad-vacanam) - that speech; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; दयावान् (dayāvān) - compassionate; दीनभाषिणाम् (dīna-bhāṣiṇām) - of those speaking pitiably; अहो (aho) - alas; कृच्छ्रम् (kṛcchram) - difficulty; इति (iti) - thus; प्राह (prāha) - he said; तस्थौ (tasthau) - he stood; स (sa) - he; च (ca) - and; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhiṣṭhira;]
(Of them, that speech having heard, compassionate for those speaking pitiably, "Alas, difficulty!" thus he said; he stood and Yudhiṣṭhira.)
Having heard their words, being compassionate for those speaking in distress, Yudhiṣṭhira said, "Alas, how difficult!" He stood still. (18-2-37)
स ता गिरः पुरस्ताद्वै श्रुतपूर्वाः पुनः पुनः। ग्लानानां दुःखितानां च नाभ्यजानत पाण्डवः ॥१८-२-३८॥
sa tā giraḥ purastād vai śrutapūrvāḥ punaḥ punaḥ। glānānāṃ duḥkhitānāṃ ca nābhyajānata pāṇḍavaḥ ॥18-2-38॥
[स (sa) - he; ता (tā) - those; गिरः (giraḥ) - voices; पुरस्तात् (purastāt) - from in front; वै (vai) - indeed; श्रुतपूर्वाः (śrutapūrvāḥ) - previously heard; पुनः पुनः (punaḥ punaḥ) - again and again; ग्लानानाम् (glānānām) - of the weary; दुःखितानाम् (duḥkhitānām) - of the sorrowful; च (ca) - and; न (na) - not; अभ्यजानत (abhyajānata) - recognized; पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - the Pāṇḍava;]
(He those voices from in front indeed previously heard again and again of the weary, of the sorrowful, and not recognized the Pāṇḍava.)
But the Pāṇḍava did not recognize those voices coming repeatedly from in front, which he had heard before, as they were of people weary and sorrowful. (18-2-38)
अबुध्यमानस्ता वाचो धर्मपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः। उवाच के भवन्तो वै किमर्थमिह तिष्ठथ ॥१८-२-३९॥
abudhyamānas tā vāco dharmaputro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। uvāca ke bhavanto vai kimartham iha tiṣṭhatha॥18-2-39॥
[अबुध्यमानः (abudhyamānaḥ) - awakening; ता (tā) - those; वाचः (vācaḥ) - words; धर्मपुत्रः (dharmaputraḥ) - the son of Dharma; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira; उवाच (uvāca) - spoke; के (ke) - who; भवन्तः (bhavantaḥ) - are you; वै (vai) - indeed; किमर्थम् (kimartham) - for what reason; इह (iha) - here; तिष्ठथ (tiṣṭhatha) - do you stand;]
(Awakening, those words, the son of Dharma, Yudhishthira, spoke: "Who are you indeed, for what reason do you stand here?" (18-2-39))
As he awakened, Yudhishthira, the son of Dharma, spoke those words: "Who are you indeed, and for what reason do you stand here?" (18-2-39)
इत्युक्तास्ते ततः सर्वे समन्तादवभाषिरे। कर्णोऽहं भीमसेनोऽहमर्जुनोऽहमिति प्रभो ॥१८-२-४०॥
ity-uktās te tataḥ sarve samantād avabhāṣire. karṇo'ham bhīmaseno'ham arjuno'ham iti prabho ॥18-2-40॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्ताः (uktāḥ) - addressed; ते (te) - they; ततः (tataḥ) - then; सर्वे (sarve) - all; समन्तात् (samantāt) - from all sides; अवभाषिरे (avabhāṣire) - spoke out; कर्णः (karṇaḥ) - Karna; अहम् (aham) - I; भीमसेनः (bhīmasenaḥ) - Bhimasena; अहम् (aham) - I; अर्जुनः (arjunaḥ) - Arjuna; अहम् (aham) - I; इति (iti) - thus; प्रभो (prabho) - O lord;]
(Thus addressed, they then all from all sides spoke out. Karna (said) 'I am', Bhimasena (said) 'I am', Arjuna (said) 'I am' thus, O lord.)
Thus having been addressed, then all of them on every side spoke out, each declaring, 'I am Karna, I am Bhimasena, I am Arjuna,' O lord. (18-2-40)
नकुलः सहदेवोऽहं धृष्टद्युम्नोऽहमित्युत। द्रौपदी द्रौपदेयाश्च इत्येवं ते विचुक्रुशुः ॥१८-२-४१॥
nakulaḥ sahadevo'haṃ dhṛṣṭadyumno'hamityuta. draupadī draupadeyāś ca ityevaṃ te vicukruśuḥ ॥18-2-41॥

(Nakula, Sahadeva, I; Dhṛṣṭadyumna, I, thus also; Draupadī, the sons of Draupadī and, thus, in this manner, they cried out loudly.)
Nakula, Sahadeva, and Dhṛṣṭadyumna, each (cried) 'I'; Draupadī and the sons of Draupadī as well—thus, in this manner, they all wailed aloud. (18-2-41)
ता वाचः सा तदा श्रुत्वा तद्देशसदृशीर्नृप। ततो विममृशे राजा किं न्विदं दैवकारितम् ॥१८-२-४२॥
tā vācaḥ sā tadā śrutvā tad-deśa-sadṛśīḥ nṛpa। tato vimamṛśe rājā kiṁ nv idaṁ daiva-kāritam ॥18-2-42॥

O king, having heard those words suitable to that place, the king then pondered, "What indeed is this that has been wrought by fate?" (18-2-42)
किं नु तत्कलुषं कर्म कृतमेभिर्महात्मभिः। कर्णेन द्रौपदेयैर्वा पाञ्चाल्या वा सुमध्यया ॥१८-२-४३॥
kiṁ nu tat-kaluṣaṁ karma kṛtam-ebhir-mahātmabhiḥ। karṇena draupadeyair-vā pāñcālyā vā sumadhyayā॥18-2-43॥

What is that impure deed which has been done by these great-souled ones—by Karṇa, or by the sons of Draupadī, or by Pāñcālī, the slender-waisted one? (18-2-43)
य इमे पापगन्धेऽस्मिन्देशे सन्ति सुदारुणे। न हि जानामि सर्वेषां दुष्कृतं पुण्यकर्मणाम् ॥१८-२-४४॥
ya ime pāpagandhe'smin deśe santi sudāruṇe। na hi jānāmi sarveṣāṃ duṣkṛtaṃ puṇyakarmaṇām ॥18-2-44॥

(Who these having the taint of evil in this place are, very terrible. Not indeed do I know the evil deed of all those with meritorious actions.)
I do not know what evil deed has been committed by all these people of meritorious actions, who now dwell in this terribly evil-tainted place. (18-2-44)
किं कृत्वा धृतराष्ट्रस्य पुत्रो राजा सुयोधनः। तथा श्रिया युतः पापः सह सर्वैः पदानुगैः ॥१८-२-४५॥
kiṁ kṛtvā dhṛtarāṣṭrasya putro rājā suyodhanaḥ। tathā śriyā yutaḥ pāpaḥ saha sarvaiḥ padānugaiḥ॥18-2-45॥

What did Suyodhana, the son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra and king, do—he who was thus endowed with splendour, sinful, and accompanied by all his attendants? (18-2-45)
महेन्द्र इव लक्ष्मीवानास्ते परमपूजितः। कस्येदानीं विकारोऽयं यदिमे नरकं गताः ॥१८-२-४६॥
mahendra iva lakṣmīvān āste paramapūjitaḥ। kasya idānīṃ vikāraḥ ayam yadi ime narakaṃ gatāḥ॥18-2-46॥
[महेन्द्र (mahendra) - Mahendra; (Indra, king of the gods; proper noun); इव (iva) - like; as; as if; लक्ष्मीवान् (lakṣmīvān) - possessed of wealth; endowed with fortune; आस्ते (āste) - remains; stays; sits; परमपूजितः (paramapūjitaḥ) - greatly honoured; highly revered; कस्य (kasya) - whose; इदानीं (idānīṃ) - now; at present; विकारः (vikāraḥ) - change; alteration; अयम् (ayam) - this; यदि (yadi) - if; इमे (ime) - these; नरकं (narakaṃ) - hell; गताः (gatāḥ) - have gone; have entered;]
(Mahendra like possessed-of-wealth remains greatly-honoured. Whose now change this if these to-hell have-gone.)
He, like Mahendra, who is endowed with fortune, sits greatly honoured. Now, whose is this change, if these have gone to hell? (18-2-46)
सर्वधर्मविदः शूराः सत्यागमपरायणाः। क्षात्रधर्मपराः प्राज्ञा यज्वानो भूरिदक्षिणाः ॥१८-२-४७॥
sarvadharmavidaḥ śūrāḥ satyāgamaparāyaṇāḥ। kṣātradharmaparāḥ prājñā yajvāno bhūridakṣiṇāḥ ॥18-2-47॥

किं नु सुप्तोऽस्मि जागर्मि चेतयानो न चेतये। अहो चित्तविकारोऽयं स्याद्वा मे चित्तविभ्रमः ॥१८-२-४८॥
kiṁ nu supto'smi jāgarmi cetayāno na cetaye| aho cittavikāro'yam syādvā me cittavibhramaḥ ॥18-2-48॥
[किं (kiṁ) - what; नु (nu) - indeed; सुप्तः (suptaḥ) - asleep; अस्मि (asmi) - am; जागर्मि (jāgarmi) - I am awake; चेतयानः (cetanānaḥ) - being conscious; न (na) - not; चेतये (cetaye) - I perceive; अहो (aho) - ah!; चित्तविकारः (cittavikāraḥ) - mental disturbance; अयम् (ayam) - this; स्यात् (syāt) - may be; वा (vā) - or; मे (me) - my; चित्तविभ्रमः (cittavibhramaḥ) - mental confusion;]
(What indeed, am I asleep? Am I awake? Being conscious, I do not perceive. Ah! this mental disturbance; or perhaps it may be my mental confusion.)
What is this? Am I asleep or awake? Though I am conscious, I do not perceive. Ah! perhaps this is a disturbance of my mind, or it may be my own mental confusion. (18-2-48)
एवं बहुविधं राजा विममर्श युधिष्ठिरः। दुःखशोकसमाविष्टश्चिन्ताव्याकुलितेन्द्रियः ॥१८-२-४९॥
evaṁ bahuvidhaṁ rājā vimamarśa yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। duḥkhaśokasamāviṣṭaś cintāvyākulitendriyaḥ ॥18-2-49॥
[एवं (evaṁ) - thus; बहुविधं (bahuvidhaṁ) - of many kinds; राजा (rājā) - the king; विममर्श (vimamarśa) - deliberated; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira; दुःखशोकसमाविष्टः (duḥkhaśokasamāviṣṭaḥ) - overcome by pain and sorrow; चिन्ताव्याकुलितेन्द्रियः (cintāvyākulitendriyaḥ) - with senses agitated by anxiety;]
(Thus, of many kinds, the king deliberated, Yudhishthira, overcome by pain and sorrow, with senses agitated by anxiety.)
Thus, King Yudhishthira, overcome with pain and sorrow and with his senses disturbed by anxiety, considered many different matters. (18-2-49)
क्रोधमाहारयच्चैव तीव्रं धर्मसुतो नृपः। देवांश्च गर्हयामास धर्मं चैव युधिष्ठिरः ॥१८-२-५०॥
krodham āhārayac caiva tīvraṃ dharmasuto nṛpaḥ। devāṃś ca garhayām āsa dharmaṃ caiva yudhiṣṭhiraḥ॥18-2-50॥
[क्रोधम् (krodham) - anger; आहारयत् (āhārayat) - brought forth; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; तीव्रम् (tīvram) - intense; धर्मसुतः (dharmasutaḥ) - son of Dharma; नृपः (nṛpaḥ) - king; देवान् (devān) - the gods; च (ca) - and; गर्हयामास (garhayām āsa) - censured; धर्मम् (dharmaṃ) - Dharma; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira;]
(Anger brought forth indeed, intense, the son of Dharma, the king. The gods and censured Dharma indeed, Yudhishthira.)
The son of Dharma, the king Yudhishthira, indeed brought forth intense anger. Yudhishthira censured both the gods and Dharma. (18-2-50)
स तीव्रगन्धसन्तप्तो देवदूतमुवाच ह। गम्यतां भद्र येषां त्वं दूतस्तेषामुपान्तिकम् ॥१८-२-५१॥
sa tīvra-gandha-santapto deva-dūtam uvāca ha। gamyatāṃ bhadra yeṣāṃ tvaṃ dūtas teṣām upāntikam॥18-2-51॥
[स (sa) - he; तीव्रगन्धसन्तप्तः (tīvra-gandha-santaptaḥ) - afflicted by strong odor; देवदूतम् (deva-dūtam) - the divine messenger; उवाच (uvāca) - spoke; ह (ha) - indeed; गम्यताम् (gamyatām) - let one go; भद्र (bhadra) - O fortunate one; येषाम् (yeṣām) - of whom; त्वम् (tvam) - you; दूतः (dūtaḥ) - messenger; तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; उपान्तिकम् (upāntikam) - to the vicinity;]
(He, afflicted by strong odor, indeed spoke to the divine messenger: "Let one go, O fortunate one, to the vicinity of those of whom you are messenger.")
Afflicted by the intense odor, he said to the divine messenger: "Go, O fortunate one, to the presence of those whom you serve as a messenger." (18-2-51)
न ह्यहं तत्र यास्म्यामि स्थितोऽस्मीति निवेद्यताम्। मत्संश्रयादिमे दूत सुखिनो भ्रातरो हि मे ॥१८-२-५२॥
na hy ahaṃ tatra yāsyāmi sthito'smīti nivedyatām। mat-saṃśrayādi me dūta sukhino bhrātaro hi me ॥18-2-52॥
[न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; तत्र (tatra) - there; यास्म्यामि (yāsyāmi) - (I) shall go; स्थितः (sthitaḥ) - remaining; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; इति (iti) - thus; निवेद्यताम् (nivedyatām) - let it be communicated; मत् (mat) - from me; संश्रयात् (saṃśrayāt) - by refuge; इमे (ime) - these; दूत (dūta) - messenger; सुखिनः (sukhinaḥ) - happy; भ्रातरः (bhrātaraḥ) - brothers; हि (hi) - indeed; मे (me) - my;]
(Not indeed I there shall go; remaining I am thus let it be communicated. From me by refuge, these messenger, happy brothers indeed my.)
Indeed, let it be communicated that I shall not go there and that I remain here. By my protection, let my messenger inform that my brothers are truly happy. (18-2-52)
इत्युक्तः स तदा दूतः पाण्डुपुत्रेण धीमता। जगाम तत्र यत्रास्ते देवराजः शतक्रतुः ॥१८-२-५३॥
ity-uktaḥ sa tadā dūtaḥ pāṇḍu-putreṇa dhīmatā। jagāma tatra yatrāste deva-rājaḥ śatakratuḥ ॥18-2-53॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - having been addressed; स (sa) - he; तदा (tadā) - then; दूतः (dūtaḥ) - the messenger; पाण्डुपुत्रेण (pāṇḍu-putreṇa) - by the son of Pāṇḍu; धीमता (dhīmatā) - wise; जगाम (jagāma) - he went; तत्र (tatra) - there; यत्र (yatra) - where; आस्ते (āste) - abides; देवराजः (deva-rājaḥ) - the king of the gods; शतक्रतुः (śatakratuḥ) - Indra;]
(Thus addressed he then, the messenger, by the wise son of Pāṇḍu, went there where abides the king of the gods, Indra.)
Thus, having been addressed by the wise son of Pāṇḍu, the messenger then went to that place where the king of the gods, Indra, abides. (18-2-53)
निवेदयामास च तद्धर्मराजचिकीर्षितम्। यथोक्तं धर्मपुत्रेण सर्वमेव जनाधिप ॥१८-२-५४॥
nivedayāmāsa ca taddharmarājacikirṣitam। yathoktaṃ dharmaputreṇa sarvameva janādhipa ॥18-2-54॥
[निवेदयामास (nivedayāmāsa) - reported; communicated; च (ca) - and; तत् (tat) - that; धर्मराजचिकीर्षितम् (dharmarājacikirṣitam) - what was intended by Dharmarāja; यथोक्तं (yathoktam) - as spoken; as said; धर्मपुत्रेण (dharmaputreṇa) - by Dharmaputra; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; everything; एव (eva) - indeed; surely; जनाधिप (janādhipa) - the lord of men; king;]
((He) reported and that which was intended by Dharmarāja. As said by Dharmaputra, all indeed (to) the lord of men (the king).)
He reported to the king all that had been intended by Dharmarāja, just as Dharmaputra had spoken. (18-2-54)
