śrautpattikastu śabdasya arthena sambandhaḥ। tasya jñānam upadeśaḥ avyatirekaḥ ca arthe anupalabdhe। tat pramāṇam bādarāyaṇasya anapekṣatvāt ॥5॥
[श्रौत्पत्तिकः (śrautpattikaḥ) - originating from śruti; तु (tu) - but; शब्दस्य (śabdasya) - of the word; अर्थेन (arthena) - with the meaning; सम्बन्धः (sambandhaḥ) - connection; तस्य (tasya) - of that; ज्ञानम् (jñānam) - knowledge; उपदेशः (upadeśaḥ) - instruction; अव्यतिरेकः (avyatirekaḥ) - non-separation; च (ca) - and; अर्थे (arthe) - in the meaning; अनुपलब्धे (anupalabdhe) - when not perceived; तत् (tat) - that; प्रमाणम् (pramāṇam) - means of knowledge; बादरायणस्य (bādarāyaṇasya) - of Bādarāyaṇa; अनपेक्षत्वात् (anapekṣatvāt) - because of non-dependence;]
(But the connection of the word with the meaning is originating from śruti; knowledge of that (connection) is instruction, non-separation, and when the meaning is not perceived. That is the means of knowledge, because of the non-dependence (on other means) according to Bādarāyaṇa.)
But, according to Bādarāyaṇa, the connection between a word and its meaning is established by śruti; knowledge of this connection arises from instruction, non-separation, and when the meaning is not otherwise perceived. This alone is the means of knowledge, since it does not depend on anything else.
