Karika 05

प्रतिविषयाध्यवसायो दृष्टं त्रिविधमनुमानमाख्यातम्। तल्लिङ्गलिङ्गि पूर्वकमाप्तश्रुतिराप्तवचनं तु ॥५॥

prativiṣayādhyavasāyo dr̥ṣṭaṁ trividhamanumānamākhyātam। talliṅgaliṅgi pūrvakamāptaśrutirāptavacanaṁ tu ॥5॥

[prati viṣaya = each topic; adhyavasāyo = ascertainment of; dr̥ṣṭaṁ = is perception; trividham = three types; anumānam = inference is; ākhyātam = described to be of; tat = they are; liṅga = unique from; liṅgi = distinguished mark; pūrvakam = accompanied by; āpta śrutiḥ = heard from trustworthy sources; āpta vacanaṁ = statements by trustworthy sources; tu = as well.]

Ascertainment of each topic is direct perception. Inference is described to be of three types. They are (a) unique form accompanied by its distinguished mark, (b) hearing from trustworthy sources and (c) statements from trustworthy sources.
