Karika 54

ऊर्ध्वं सत्त्वविशालस्तमोविशालश्च मूलतः सर्गः। मध्ये रजोविशालो ब्रह्मादिस्तम्बपर्यन्तः ॥५४॥

ūrdhvaṁ sattvaviśālastamōviśālaśca mūlataḥ sargaḥ। madhyē rajōviśālō brahmādistambaparyantaḥ ॥54॥

[ऊर्ध्वं सत्व विशालः तमः विशालः च मूलतः सर्गः। मध्ये रजः विशालो ब्रह्मादि स्तम्ब पर्यन्तः॥
ūrdhvaṁ = at higher regions; satva = satwa quality; viśālaḥ = is dominant; tamaḥ = tamasic quality; viśālaḥ = is dominant; ca = and; mūlataḥ = at the root or nether regions; sargaḥ = in the universe; madhyē = in the middle region; rajaḥ = rajas quality; viśālō = is dominant; brahmādi stamba paryantaḥ = across the vast expanse of universe;]

The Satva quality is dominant at higher regions, the tamas at neither region, and the rajas quality is dominant in the middle. Such is the state across the vast expanse of the universe.
