Vaisesika Sūtra 8.1.04

guṇakarmasu saṃnikṛṣṭeṣu jñānaniṣpatter dravyaṃ kāraṇam ॥4॥

The qualities and actions of the substances that are in contact are the cause for the production of knowledge.
