kiṁ kr̥taṁ karma dharmēṇa yēna śāpamupēyivān । kasya śāpācca brahmarṣē śūdrayōnāvajāyata ॥BORI: 1-101-1॥
What deed did Dharma commit that brought a curse upon him? And by whose curse, O Brahmarṣi, was he born from a Śūdra womb? (BORI: 1-101-1)
[PV-OTH:01_015_1]
babhūva brāhmaṇaḥ kaścinmāṇḍavya iti viśrutaḥ । dhr̥timānsarvadharmajñaḥ satyē tapasi ca sthitaḥ ॥BORI: 1-101-2॥
There was a certain Brahmin, renowned as Māṇḍavya, who was steadfast, knew all the laws of dharma, and was devoted to truth and austerity. (BORI: 1-101-2)
[PV-OTH:01_015_2]
sa āśramapadadvāri vr̥kṣamūlē mahātapāḥ । ūrdhvabāhurmahāyōgī tasthau maunavratānvitaḥ ॥BORI: 1-101-3॥
That great ascetic and mighty yogin stood beneath a tree at the entrance to his hermitage, his arms raised, observing a vow of silence. (BORI: 1-101-3)
[PV-OTH:01_015_3]
tasya kālēna mahatā tasmiṁstapasi tiṣṭhataḥ । tamāśramapadaṁ prāptā dasyavō lōptrahāriṇaḥ । anusāryamāṇā bahubhī rakṣibhirbharatarṣabha ॥BORI: 1-101-4॥
After a long time, while he remained engaged in that austerity, robbers carrying plunder reached the hermitage, pursued by many guards, O bull of the Bharatas. (BORI: 1-101-4)
[PV-OTH:01_015_4]
tē tasyāvasathē lōptraṁ nidadhuḥ kurusattama । nidhāya ca bhayāllīnāstatraivānvāgatē balē ॥BORI: 1-101-5॥
They deposited the stolen goods in his dwelling, best of the Kurus, and then hid there in fear when the pursuing force arrived. (BORI: 1-101-5)
[PV-OTH:01_015_5]
tēṣu līnēṣvathō śīghraṁ tatastadrakṣiṇāṁ balam । ājagāma tatō’paśyaṁstamr̥ṣiṁ taskarānugāḥ ॥BORI: 1-101-6॥
Once they had hidden, the guards’ force quickly arrived; then the men pursuing the thieves saw the sage. (BORI: 1-101-6)
[PV-OTH:01_015_6]
tamapr̥cchaṁstatō rājaṁstathāvr̥ttaṁ tapōdhanam । katarēṇa pathā yātā dasyavō dvijasattama । tēna gacchāmahē brahmanpathā śīghrataraṁ vayam ॥BORI: 1-101-7॥
Then they asked the ascetic, who remained just as he was, “Best of Brahmins, by which road did the bandits go? Tell us, so that we may quickly follow that road.” (BORI: 1-101-7)
[PV-OTH:01_015_7]
tathā tu rakṣiṇāṁ tēṣāṁ bruvatāṁ sa tapōdhanaḥ । na kiñcidvacanaṁ rājannavadatsādhvasādhu vā ॥BORI: 1-101-8॥
But though the guards spoke to him in this way, O king, the ascetic said nothing at all, either good or bad. (BORI: 1-101-8)
[PV-OTH:01_015_8]
tatastē rājapuruṣā vicinvānāstadāśramam । dadr̥śustatra saṁlīnāṁstāṁścōrāndravyamēva ca ॥BORI: 1-101-9॥
Then the king’s men searched the hermitage and found the thieves hiding there, along with the stolen goods. (BORI: 1-101-9)
[PV-OTH:01_015_9]
tataḥ śaṅkā samabhavadrakṣiṇāṁ taṁ muniṁ prati । saṁyamyainaṁ tatō rājñē dasyūṁścaiva nyavēdayan ॥BORI: 1-101-10॥
The guards then became suspicious of the sage. They bound him and brought him and the robbers before the king. (BORI: 1-101-10)
[PV-OTH:01_015_10]
taṁ rājā saha taiścōrairanvaśādvadhyatāmiti । sa vadhyaghātairajñātaḥ śūlē prōtō mahātapāḥ ॥BORI: 1-101-11॥
The king ordered that he be executed along with those thieves. Not recognized by the executioners, the great ascetic was impaled on a stake. (BORI: 1-101-11)
[PV-OTH:01_015_11]
tatastē śūlamārōpya taṁ muniṁ rakṣiṇastadā । pratijagmurmahīpālaṁ dhanānyādāya tānyatha ॥BORI: 1-101-12॥
Then the guards impaled the sage and returned to the king, taking the stolen goods with them. (BORI: 1-101-12)
[PV-OTH:01_015_12]
śūlasthaḥ sa tu dharmātmā kālēna mahatā tataḥ । nirāhārō’pi viprarṣirmaraṇaṁ nābhyupāgamat । dhārayāmāsa ca prāṇānr̥ṣīṁśca samupānayat ॥BORI: 1-101-13॥
Though impaled, that righteous brahmin sage did not die, even after a long time without food. He sustained his life and caused the sages to gather around him. (BORI: 1-101-13)
[PV-OTH:01_015_13]
śūlāgrē tapyamānēna tapastēna mahātmanā । santāpaṁ paramaṁ jagmurmunayō’tha parantapa ॥BORI: 1-101-14॥
As that great-souled man suffered on the tip of the stake and continued his austerities, the sages became deeply distressed, O scorcher of foes. (BORI: 1-101-14)
[PV-OTH:01_015_14]
tē rātrau śakunā bhūtvā saṁnyavartanta sarvataḥ । darśayantō yathāśakti tamapr̥cchandvijōttamam । śrōtumicchāmahē brahmankiṁ pāpaṁ kr̥tavānasi ॥BORI: 1-101-15॥
At night they took the form of birds and gathered from every direction. Revealing themselves as best they could, they asked that foremost of the twice-born, “Brahmin, we wish to hear what sin you have committed.” (BORI: 1-101-15)
[PV-OTH:01_015_15]
tataḥ sa muniśārdūlastānuvāca tapōdhanān । dōṣataḥ kaṁ gamiṣyāmi na hi mē’nyō’parādhyati ॥BORI: 1-101-16॥
Then that tiger among sages said to those rich in austerities, “Whom shall I blame? No one else has wronged me.” (BORI: 1-101-16)
[PV-OTH:01_015_16]
rājā ca tamr̥ṣiṁ śrutvā niṣkramya saha mantribhiḥ । prasādayāmāsa tadā śūlasthamr̥ṣisattamam ॥BORI: 1-101-17॥
When the king heard of the sage, he went out with his ministers and sought the forgiveness of that eminent sage, who was still impaled. (BORI: 1-101-17)
[PV-OTH:01_015_17]
yanmayāpakr̥taṁ mōhādajñānādr̥ṣisattama । prasādayē tvāṁ tatrāhaṁ na mē tvaṁ krōddhumarhasi ॥BORI: 1-101-18॥
“Best of sages, whatever wrong I did to you through delusion and ignorance, I ask your forgiveness for it. You should not be angry with me.” (BORI: 1-101-18)
[PV-OTH:01_015_18]
ēvamuktastatō rājñā prasādamakarōnmuniḥ । kr̥taprasādō rājā taṁ tataḥ samavatārayat ॥BORI: 1-101-19॥
Thus addressed by the king, the sage forgave him. Once the sage had granted his pardon, the king brought him down. (BORI: 1-101-19)
[PV-OTH:01_015_19]
avatārya ca śūlāgrāttacchūlaṁ niścakarṣa ha । aśaknuvaṁśca niṣkraṣṭuṁ śūlaṁ mūlē sa cicchidē ॥BORI: 1-101-20॥
After taking him down from the tip of the stake, he tried to pull it out. Unable to extract it, he cut the stake off at its base. (BORI: 1-101-20)
[PV-OTH:01_015_20]
sa tathāntargatēnaiva śūlēna vyacaranmuniḥ । sa tēna tapasā lōkānvijigyē durlabhānparaiḥ । aṇīmāṇḍavya iti ca tatō lōkēṣu kathyatē ॥BORI: 1-101-21॥
The sage went about with the stake still lodged within him. Through that austerity he conquered worlds unattainable by others, and thereafter he became known throughout the worlds as Aṇīmāṇḍavya. (BORI: 1-101-21)
[PV-OTH:01_015_21]
sa gatvā sadanaṁ viprō dharmasya paramārthavit । āsanasthaṁ tatō dharmaṁ dr̥ṣṭvōpālabhata prabhuḥ ॥BORI: 1-101-22॥
The Brahmin, a knower of the highest truth, went to Dharma’s abode. There the powerful sage saw Dharma seated and reproached him. (BORI: 1-101-22)
[PV-OTH:01_015_22]
kiṁ nu tadduṣkr̥taṁ karma mayā kr̥tamajānatā । yasyēyaṁ phalanirvr̥ttirīdr̥śyāsāditā mayā । śīghramācakṣva mē tattvaṁ paśya mē tapasō balam ॥BORI: 1-101-23॥
What evil deed did I unknowingly commit, for which I have suffered such a consequence? Tell me the truth at once—behold the power of my austerities! (BORI: 1-101-23)
[PV-OTH:01_015_23]
pataṅgakānāṁ pucchēṣu tvayēṣīkā pravēśitā । karmaṇastasya tē prāptaṁ phalamētattapōdhana ॥BORI: 1-101-24॥
You stuck blades of grass into the tails of small insects; this is the consequence you have incurred for that deed, O ascetic. (BORI: 1-101-24)
[PV-OTH:01_015_24]
alpē’parādhē vipulō mama daṇḍastvayā kr̥taḥ । śūdrayōnāvatō dharma mānuṣaḥ sambhaviṣyasi ॥BORI: 1-101-25॥
For a slight offense, you inflicted a severe punishment upon me. Therefore, Dharma, you will be born as a human in a Shudra womb. (BORI: 1-101-25)
[PV-OTH:01_015_25]
maryādāṁ sthāpayāmyadya lōkē dharmaphalōdayām । ā caturdaśamādvarṣānna bhaviṣyati pātakam । parēṇa kurvatāmēvaṁ dōṣa ēva bhaviṣyati ॥BORI: 1-101-26॥
Today I establish a rule in the world that will determine the arising of the fruits of dharma: until the age of fourteen, an act will not be sinful; thereafter, those who act in this way will indeed incur guilt. (BORI: 1-101-26)
[PV-OTH:01_015_26]
ētēna tvaparādhēna śāpāttasya mahātmanaḥ । dharmō vidurarūpēṇa śūdrayōnāvajāyata ॥BORI: 1-101-27॥
Because of this transgression and the curse of that great-souled man, Dharma was born in a Shudra womb in the form of Vidura. (BORI: 1-101-27)
[PV-OTH:01_015_27]

Skilled in matters of dharma and statecraft, free from greed and anger, farsighted, devoted to tranquility, and intent on the welfare of the Kurus. (BORI: 1-101-28)
[PV-OTH:01_015_28]

While traveling on pilgrimage, he happened upon various sacred sites near the villages. The great sage established a hermitage there and dwelt in it. (KUMB: 1-116-3)
[PV-SVO:01_015_29]

anusāryamāṇā bahubhī rakṣibhirbharatarṣabha । tāmēva vasatiṁ jagmustē grāmāllōptrahāriṇaḥ ॥KUMB: 1-116-6॥
Pursued by many guards, O bull of the Bharatas, those robbers carrying their plunder left the village and went to that very dwelling. (KUMB: 1-116-6)
[PV-SVO:01_015_30]

We wish to hear, Brahmin: what sin did you commit, because of which you have met with such great suffering and terror here upon the stake? (KUMB: 1-116-19; NILA: 01.107.017)
[PV-SVO:01_015_31]

After many days, the guards saw him there in that condition and reported to the king exactly what had happened, O ruler of men. (KUMB: 1-117-2; NILA: 01.108.002)
[PV-SVO:01_015_32]

Thus the sage wandered about with the stake still embedded in him. With the spike lodged between his throat and side, he moved about, absorbed in the thought, “It could support a vessel of flowers.” (KUMB: 1-117-7)
[PV-SVO:01_015_33]

Just as even a small gift, once given, becomes many times greater, so wrongdoing, O Brahmin sage, yields the fruit of great suffering. (KUMB: 1-117-13; NILA: 01.108.012)
[PV-SVO:01_015_34]

“Tell me exactly when I did that.” Dharma-rāja replied, “You did it in childhood.” (KUMB: 1-117-14; NILA: 01.108.013)
[PV-SVO:01_015_35]

Indeed, whatever a child does from birth until the age of twelve entails no wrongdoing, for he does not yet know one direction from another. (KUMB: 1-117-15; NILA: 01.108.014)
[PV-SVO:01_015_36]

For even a minor offense, you imposed a severe punishment on me. Killing a Brahmin is graver than killing all other beings. (KUMB: 1-117-16; NILA: 01.108.015)
[PV-SVO:01_015_37]

The land bore abundant crops, and the crops were fruitful; Parjanya rained in due season, and the trees were laden with flowers and fruit. (BORI: 1-102-2)
[PV-OTH:01_015_39]
