Yōga Sūtra 1.32
तत्प्रतिषेधार्थमेकतत्त्वाभ्यासः।
tatpratiṣēdhārthamēkatattvābhyāsaḥ।
[तत् प्रतिषेधार्थम् एक तत्त्व अभ्यासः।
tat = these; pratiṣēdhārtham = to eliminate; ēka = one; tattva = principle; abhyāsaḥ= practice on;]
To eliminate these (disturbances) practice on one principle.
It is mandated that one practice on one principle, as a first step till one reaches nirvichara samadhi, the equilibrium state without deliberation. This one principle preferably could be īśvaraḥ for an easy and faster progress. Focusing on nothing or emptiness is not the prescribed method as per Patanjali.
