Ruru spoke.
कथं हिंसितवान्सर्पान्क्षत्रियो जनमेजयः । सर्पा वा हिंसितास्तात किमर्थं द्विजसत्तम ॥१-१२-१॥
kathaṁ hiṁsitavānsarpānkṣatriyo janamejayaḥ । sarpā vā hiṁsitāstāta kimarthaṁ dvijasattama ॥1-12-1॥
[कथं (kathaṁ) - how; हिंसितवान् (hiṁsitavān) - killed; सर्पान् (sarpān) - serpents; क्षत्रियः (kṣatriyaḥ) - warrior; जनमेजयः (janamejayaḥ) - Janamejaya; सर्पाः (sarpāḥ) - serpents; वा (vā) - or; हिंसिताः (hiṁsitāḥ) - killed; तात (tāta) - father; किमर्थं (kimarthaṁ) - why; द्विजसत्तम (dvijasattama) - O best of the twice-born;]

किमर्थं मोक्षिताश्चैव पन्नगास्तेन शंस मे । आस्तीकेन तदाचक्ष्व श्रोतुमिच्छाम्यशेषतः ॥१-१२-२॥
kimarthaṃ mokṣitāścaiva pannagāstena śaṃsa me । āstīkena tadācakṣva śrotumicchāmyaśeṣataḥ ॥1-12-2॥
[किमर्थं (kimartham) - for what reason; मोक्षिताः (mokṣitāḥ) - released; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; पन्नगाः (pannagāḥ) - serpents; तेन (tena) - by him; शंस (śaṃsa) - tell; मे (me) - me; आस्तीकेन (āstīkena) - by Āstīka; तत् (tat) - that; आचक्ष्व (ācakṣva) - explain; श्रोतुम् (śrotum) - to hear; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I wish; अशेषतः (aśeṣataḥ) - completely;]
(For what reason were the serpents indeed released by him? Tell me that, explained by Āstīka, as I wish to hear it completely.)
Please tell me why the serpents were released by Āstīka. I wish to hear the complete explanation.
ऋषिरुवाच॥

[ऋषिः (ṛṣiḥ) - sage; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
(The sage said.)
The sage spoke.
श्रोष्यसि त्वं रुरो सर्वमास्तीकचरितं महत् । ब्राह्मणानां कथयतामित्युक्त्वान्तरधीयत ॥१-१२-३॥
śroṣyasi tvaṃ ruro sarvamāstīkacaritaṃ mahat । brāhmaṇānāṃ kathayatāmityuktvāntaradhīyata ॥1-12-3॥
[श्रोष्यसि (śroṣyasi) - you will hear; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; रुरः (ruraḥ) - O Ruru; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; आस्तीकचरितम् (āstīkacaritam) - Āstīka's story; महत् (mahat) - great; ब्राह्मणानाम् (brāhmaṇānām) - of the Brāhmaṇas; कथयताम् (kathayatām) - while narrating; इति (iti) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having said; अन्तरधीयत (antaradhīyata) - disappeared;]
(You will hear, O Ruru, all of Āstīka's great story while the Brāhmaṇas are narrating, thus having said, disappeared.)
O Ruru, you will hear the entire great story of Āstīka as narrated by the Brāhmaṇas. Having said this, he disappeared.
सूत उवाच॥

[सूत (sūta) - Sūta; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]

Sūta said.
रुरुश्चापि वनं सर्वं पर्यधावत्समन्ततः । तमृषिं द्रष्टुमन्विच्छन्संश्रान्तो न्यपतद्भुवि ॥१-१२-४॥
ruruś cāpi vanaṃ sarvaṃ paryadhāvatsamantataḥ । tam ṛṣiṃ draṣṭum anvicchan saṃśrānto nyapatad bhuvi ॥1-12-4॥
[रुरुः (ruruḥ) - Ruru; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; वनम् (vanam) - forest; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; पर्यधावत् (paryadhāvat) - ran around; समन्ततः (samantataḥ) - everywhere; तम् (tam) - that; ऋषिम् (ṛṣim) - sage; द्रष्टुम् (draṣṭum) - to see; अन्विच्छन् (anvicchan) - seeking; संश्रान्तः (saṃśrāntaḥ) - exhausted; न्यपतत् (nyapatat) - fell; भुवि (bhuvi) - on the ground;]
(Ruru also ran around the entire forest everywhere, seeking to see that sage, exhausted, he fell on the ground.)
Ruru, in his quest to find the sage, ran tirelessly through the entire forest and eventually, exhausted, collapsed on the ground.
लब्धसञ्ज्ञो रुरुश्चायात्तच्चाचख्यौ पितुस्तदा । पिता चास्य तदाख्यानं पृष्टः सर्वं न्यवेदयत् ॥१-१२-५॥
labdhasañjño ruruścāyāttaccācakhyau pitustadā । pitā cāsya tadākhyānaṃ pṛṣṭaḥ sarvaṃ nyavedayat ॥1-12-5॥
[लब्धसञ्ज्ञः (labdhasaṃjñaḥ) - having regained consciousness; रुरुः (ruruḥ) - Ruru; च (ca) - and; आयात्तम् (āyāttam) - approached; तत् (tat) - that; च (ca) - and; आख्यौ (ākhyau) - told; पितुः (pituḥ) - to his father; तदा (tadā) - then; पिता (pitā) - father; च (ca) - and; अस्य (asya) - his; तत् (tat) - that; आख्यानम् (ākhyānam) - story; पृष्टः (pṛṣṭaḥ) - asked; सर्वम् (sarvam) - everything; न्यवेदयत् (nyavedayat) - narrated; ॥१-१२-५॥ (॥1-12-5॥) - (verse number);]
(Having regained consciousness, Ruru approached and told that to his father. Then his father, when asked, narrated the entire story.)
Ruru, having regained his senses, approached his father and recounted the events. His father, upon being asked, narrated the whole story.
