तानब्रवीत्स दृष्ट्वैव जरत्कारुः पितामहान् । के भवन्तोऽवलम्बन्ते गर्तेऽस्मिन्वा अधोमुखाः ॥१-१३-१२॥

वीरणस्तम्बके लग्नाः सर्वतः परिभक्षिते । मूषकेन निगूढेन गर्तेऽस्मिन्नित्यवासिना ॥१-१३-१३॥
vīraṇastambake lagnāḥ sarvataḥ paribhakṣite । mūṣakena nigūḍhena garte'sminnityavāsinā ॥1-13-13॥

यायावरा नाम वयमृषयः संशितव्रताः । सन्तानप्रक्षयाद्ब्रह्मन्नधो गच्छाम मेदिनीम् ॥१-१३-१४॥
yāyāvarā nāma vayamṛṣayaḥ saṃśitavratāḥ । santānaprakṣayādbrahmannadho gacchāma medinīm ॥1-13-14॥
[यायावरा (yāyāvarā) - wanderers; नाम (nāma) - by name; वयम् (vayam) - we; ऋषयः (ṛṣayaḥ) - sages; संशितव्रताः (saṃśitavratāḥ) - of firm vows; सन्तानप्रक्षयात् (santānaprakṣayāt) - due to the extinction of progeny; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brahman; अधः (adhaḥ) - down; गच्छाम (gacchāma) - we go; मेदिनीम् (medinīm) - to the earth;]

अस्माकं सन्ततिस्त्वेको जरत्कारुरिति श्रुतः । मन्दभाग्योऽल्पभाग्यानां तप एव समास्थितः ॥१-१३-१५॥
asmākaṃ santatistveko jaratkāruriti śrutaḥ । mandabhāgyo'lpabhāgyānāṃ tapa eva samāsthitaḥ ॥1-13-15॥

(Our progeny is indeed one, Jaratkaru, thus heard. Of little fortune, of those with little fortune, only penance engaged in.)
Our lineage is known to consist of only one person, Jaratkaru, who is heard to be of little fortune. Among those with little fortune, he is solely engaged in penance.
न स पुत्राञ्जनयितुं दारान्मूढश्चिकीर्षति । तेन लम्बामहे गर्ते सन्तानप्रक्षयादिह ॥१-१३-१६॥
na sa putrāñjanayituṃ dārānmūḍhaścikīrṣati । tena lambāmahe garte santānaprakṣayādiha ॥1-13-16॥
[न (na) - not; स (sa) - he; पुत्रान् (putrān) - sons; जनयितुं (janayituṃ) - to beget; दारान् (dārān) - wives; मूढः (mūḍhaḥ) - foolish; चिकीर्षति (cikīrṣati) - desires; तेन (tena) - therefore; लम्बामहे (lambāmahe) - we fall; गर्ते (garte) - into the pit; सन्तान (santāna) - progeny; प्रक्षयात् (prakṣayāt) - due to the destruction; इह (iha) - here;]
(He does not desire to beget sons or wives, being foolish. Therefore, we fall into the pit here due to the destruction of progeny.)
The foolish man does not wish to have children or wives. As a result, we find ourselves in a pit here due to the decline of progeny.
अनाथास्तेन नाथेन यथा दुष्कृतिनस्तथा । कस्त्वं बन्धुरिवास्माकमनुशोचसि सत्तम ॥१-१३-१७॥
anāthāstena nāthena yathā duṣkṛtinastathā । kastvaṃ bandhurivāsmākamanuśocasi sattama ॥1-13-17॥
[अनाथाः (anāthāḥ) - helpless; तेन (tena) - by him; नाथेन (nāthena) - by the protector; यथा (yathā) - as; दुष्कृतिनः (duṣkṛtinaḥ) - sinners; तथा (tathā) - so; कः (kaḥ) - who; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; बन्धुः (bandhuḥ) - friend; इव (iva) - like; अस्माकम् (asmākam) - our; अनुशोचसि (anuśocasi) - lament; सत्तम (sattama) - O best;]
(Helpless by him, by the protector, as sinners so; who you friend like our lament, O best.)
O best one, just as the helpless are protected by him, the protector, and the sinners are treated likewise, who are you to lament like a friend for us?
ज्ञातुमिच्छामहे ब्रह्मन्को भवानिह धिष्ठितः । किमर्थं चैव नः शोच्याननुकम्पितुमर्हसि ॥१-१३-१८॥
jñātum icchāmahe brahman ko bhavān iha dhiṣṭhitaḥ । kimarthaṃ caiva naḥ śocyān anukampitum arhasi ॥1-13-18॥
[ज्ञातुम् (jñātum) - to know; इच्छामहे (icchāmahe) - we wish; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brahman; कः (kaḥ) - who; भवान् (bhavān) - you; इह (iha) - here; धिष्ठितः (dhiṣṭhitaḥ) - situated; किमर्थम् (kimartham) - for what purpose; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; नः (naḥ) - us; शोच्यान् (śocyān) - the pitiable; अनुकम्पितुम् (anukampitum) - to show compassion; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought to;]

मम पूर्वे भवन्तो वै पितरः सपितामहाः । ब्रूत किं करवाण्यद्य जरत्कारुरहं स्वयम् ॥१-१३-१९॥
mama pūrve bhavanto vai pitaraḥ sapitāmahāḥ । brūta kiṃ karavāṇyadya jaratkārurahaṃ svayam ॥1-13-19॥

यतस्व यत्नवांस्तात सन्तानाय कुलस्य नः । आत्मनोऽर्थेऽस्मदर्थे च धर्म इत्येव चाभिभो ॥१-१३-२०॥
yatasva yatnavāṁstāta santānāya kulasya naḥ । ātmano'rthe'smadarthe ca dharma ityeva cābhibho ॥1-13-20॥
[यतस्व (yatasva) - endeavor; यत्नवांस्तात (yatnavāṁstāta) - diligent one, O dear; सन्तानाय (santānāya) - for the progeny; कुलस्य (kulasya) - of the family; नः (naḥ) - our; आत्मनः (ātmanah) - for oneself; अर्थे (arthe) - for the purpose; अस्मदर्थे (asmadarthe) - for our purpose; च (ca) - and; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - duty; इति (iti) - thus; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and; अभिभो (abhibho) - O master;]
(Endeavor, O diligent one, for the progeny of our family; for oneself, for our purpose, and indeed for duty, O master.)
O dear, strive diligently for the continuation of our family lineage; for your own benefit, for our collective purpose, and indeed for the sake of duty, O master.
न हि धर्मफलैस्तात न तपोभिः सुसञ्चितैः । तां गतिं प्राप्नुवन्तीह पुत्रिणो यां व्रजन्ति ह ॥१-१३-२१॥
na hi dharmaphalaistāta na tapobhiḥ susañcitaiḥ । tāṃ gatiṃ prāpnuvantīha putriṇo yāṃ vrajanti ha ॥1-13-21॥
[न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; धर्मफलैः (dharmaphalaiḥ) - by the fruits of righteousness; तात (tāta) - O dear; न (na) - not; तपोभिः (tapobhiḥ) - by austerities; सुसञ्चितैः (susañcitaiḥ) - well accumulated; तां (tāṃ) - that; गतिं (gatiṃ) - state; प्राप्नुवन्ति (prāpnuvanti) - attain; इह (iha) - here; पुत्रिणः (putriṇaḥ) - those with sons; यां (yāṃ) - which; व्रजन्ति (vrajanti) - go; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(Not indeed by the fruits of righteousness, O dear, nor by austerities well accumulated, do those with sons attain that state here which they indeed go to.)
O dear, those with sons do not attain that state here by the fruits of righteousness or by well-accumulated austerities, which they indeed go to.
तद्दारग्रहणे यत्नं सन्तत्यां च मनः कुरु । पुत्रकास्मन्नियोगात्त्वमेतन्नः परमं हितम् ॥१-१३-२२॥

सनाम्नी या भवित्री मे दित्सिता चैव बन्धुभिः । भैक्षवत्तामहं कन्यामुपयंस्ये विधानतः ॥१-१३-२५॥

(By the mother, indeed, the serpents were cursed formerly, O best of the knowers of Brahman. In the sacrifice of Janamejaya, the wind-charioteer will burn you.)

Jaratkaru, having fulfilled his firm vows and relieved the heavy burden of his ancestors, ascended to heaven along with them.
आस्तीकं च सुतं प्राप्य धर्मं चानुत्तमं मुनिः । जरत्कारुः सुमहता कालेन स्वर्गमीयिवान् ॥१-१३-४४॥
āstīkaṃ ca sutaṃ prāpya dharmaṃ cānuttamaṃ muniḥ । jaratkāruḥ sumahatā kālena svargamīyivān ॥1-13-44॥

The sage Jaratkāru, having been blessed with a son named Āstīka and having fulfilled the highest dharma, eventually departed to heaven after a long life.
एतदाख्यानमास्तीकं यथावत्कीर्तितं मया । प्रब्रूहि भृगुशार्दूल किं भूयः कथ्यतामिति ॥१-१३-४५॥
etadākhyānamāstīkaṃ yathāvatkīrtitaṃ mayā । prabrūhi bhṛguśārdūla kiṃ bhūyaḥ kathyatāmiti ॥1-13-45॥
