Śṛṅgi spoke:
यद्येतत्साहसं तात यदि वा दुष्कृतं कृतम्। प्रियं वाप्यप्रियं वा ते वागुक्ता न मृषा मया ॥१-३८-१॥
yadyetatsāhasaṃ tāta yadi vā duṣkṛtaṃ kṛtam। priyaṃ vāpyapriyaṃ vā te vāguktā na mṛṣā mayā ॥1-38-1॥
[यत् (yat) - if; एतत् (etat) - this; साहसं (sāhasam) - rash act; तात (tāta) - dear; यदि (yadi) - if; वा (vā) - or; दुष्कृतं (duṣkṛtaṃ) - wrong deed; कृतम् (kṛtam) - done; प्रियं (priyaṃ) - pleasant; वा (vā) - or; अप्यप्रियं (apyapriyaṃ) - even unpleasant; वा (vā) - or; ते (te) - your; वाक् (vāk) - speech; उक्ता (uktā) - spoken; न (na) - not; मृषा (mṛṣā) - false; मया (mayā) - by me;]
(If this rash act, dear, or wrong deed is done, whether pleasant or even unpleasant, your speech is not false by me.)
Dear, if this rash act or wrong deed has been done, whether it is pleasant or unpleasant to you, I have not spoken falsely.
नैवान्यथेदं भविता पितरेष ब्रवीमि ते। नाहं मृषा प्रब्रवीमि स्वैरेष्वपि कुतः शपन् ॥१-३८-२॥
naivānyathedaṃ bhavitā pitareṣa bravīmi te। nāhaṃ mṛṣā prabravīmi svaireṣvapi kutaḥ śapan ॥1-38-2॥
[न (na) - not; एव (eva) - indeed; अन्यथा (anyathā) - otherwise; इदं (idaṃ) - this; भविता (bhavitā) - will be; पितरेष (pitareṣa) - O ancestors; ब्रवीमि (bravīmi) - I say; ते (te) - to you; न (na) - not; अहम् (aham) - I; मृषा (mṛṣā) - falsehood; प्रब्रवीमि (prabravīmi) - I speak; स्वैरेषु (svaireṣu) - in private; अपि (api) - even; कुतः (kutaḥ) - how; शपन् (śapan) - swearing;]
(Not indeed otherwise this will be, O ancestors, I say to you. Not I falsehood speak, in private even how swearing.)
I assure you, O ancestors, that this will not be otherwise. I do not speak falsehood, even in private, how could I while swearing?
शमीक उवाच॥

Śamīka spoke:
जानाम्युग्रप्रभावं त्वां पुत्र सत्यगिरं तथा। नानृतं ह्युक्तपूर्वं ते नैतन्मिथ्या भविष्यति ॥१-३८-३॥
jānāmyugraprabhāvaṃ tvāṃ putra satyagiraṃ tathā। nānṛtaṃ hyuktapūrvaṃ te naitanmithyā bhaviṣyati ॥1-38-3॥
[जानामि (jānāmi) - I know; उग्र (ugra) - fierce; प्रभावं (prabhāvaṃ) - power; त्वां (tvāṃ) - you; पुत्र (putra) - son; सत्यगिरं (satyagiraṃ) - truth-speaking; तथा (tathā) - also; न (na) - not; अनृतं (anṛtaṃ) - false; हि (hi) - indeed; उक्तपूर्वं (uktapūrvaṃ) - spoken before; ते (te) - by you; न (na) - not; एतत् (etat) - this; मिथ्या (mithyā) - false; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be;]
(I know your fierce power, son, and your truth-speaking nature. Indeed, what has been spoken by you before is not false; this will not be false.)
I am aware of your formidable power and your commitment to truth, my son. What you have spoken before has never been false, and this will not be false either.
पित्रा पुत्रो वयःस्थोऽपि सततं वाच्य एव तु। यथा स्याद्गुणसंयुक्तः प्राप्नुयाच्च महद्यशः ॥१-३८-४॥
pitrā putro vayaḥstho'pi satataṃ vācya eva tu। yathā syādguṇasaṃyuktaḥ prāpnuyācca mahadyaśaḥ ॥1-38-4॥
[पित्रा (pitrā) - by the father; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; वयःस्थः (vayaḥsthaḥ) - grown-up; अपि (api) - even; सततम् (satatam) - always; वाच्यः (vācyaḥ) - to be advised; एव (eva) - indeed; तु (tu) - but; यथा (yathā) - so that; स्यात् (syāt) - he may become; गुणसंयुक्तः (guṇasaṃyuktaḥ) - endowed with virtues; प्राप्नुयात् (prāpnuyāt) - may obtain; च (ca) - and; महत् (mahat) - great; यशः (yaśaḥ) - fame;]
(By the father, the son, even if grown-up, is always to be advised indeed, but so that he may become endowed with virtues and may obtain great fame.)
A father should always advise his son, even if he is grown-up, so that he may develop virtues and achieve great fame.
किं पुनर्बाल एव त्वं तपसा भावितः प्रभो। वर्धते च प्रभवतां कोपोऽतीव महात्मनाम् ॥१-३८-५॥
kiṁ punarbāla eva tvaṁ tapasā bhāvitaḥ prabho। vardhate ca prabhavatāṁ kopo'tīva mahātmanām ॥1-38-5॥
[किं (kiṁ) - what; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; बालः (bālaḥ) - child; एव (eva) - indeed; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; तपसा (tapasā) - by penance; भावितः (bhāvitaḥ) - cultivated; प्रभो (prabho) - O lord; वर्धते (vardhate) - grows; च (ca) - and; प्रभवताम् (prabhavatām) - of the powerful; कोपः (kopaḥ) - anger; अतीव (atīva) - extremely; महात्मनाम् (mahātmanām) - of the great souls;]
(What, again, you indeed, O lord, cultivated by penance as a child. The anger of the powerful great souls grows extremely.)

सोऽहं पश्यामि वक्तव्यं त्वयि धर्मभृतां वर। पुत्रत्वं बालतां चैव तवावेक्ष्य च साहसम् ॥१-३८-६॥
so'haṁ paśyāmi vaktavyaṁ tvayi dharmabhṛtāṁ vara। putratvaṁ bālatāṁ caiva tavāvekṣya ca sāhasam ॥1-38-6॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अहम् (aham) - I; पश्यामि (paśyāmi) - see; वक्तव्यम् (vaktavyam) - to be spoken; त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; धर्मभृताम् (dharmabhṛtām) - of the upholders of dharma; वर (vara) - best; पुत्रत्वम् (putratvam) - sonship; बालताम् (bālatām) - childhood; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; तव (tava) - your; अवेक्ष्य (avekṣya) - considering; च (ca) - and; साहसम् (sāhasam) - boldness;]
(He, I see, is to be spoken in you, best of the upholders of dharma, considering your sonship, childhood, and indeed boldness.)
I see that you, the best among the upholders of dharma, are to be spoken to, considering your sonship, childhood, and boldness.
स त्वं शमयुतो भूत्वा वन्यमाहारमाहरन्। चर क्रोधमिमं त्यक्त्वा नैवं धर्मं प्रहास्यसि ॥१-३८-७॥
sa tvaṁ śamayuto bhūtvā vanyamāhāramāharan। cara krodhamimaṁ tyaktvā naivaṁ dharmaṁ prahāsyasi ॥1-38-7॥
[स (sa) - he; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; शमयुतः (śamayutaḥ) - calmness-endowed; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; वन्यम् (vanyam) - wild; आहारम् (āhāram) - food; आहरन् (āharan) - bringing; चर (cara) - move; क्रोधम् (krodham) - anger; इमम् (imam) - this; त्यक्त्वा (tyaktvā) - abandoning; न (na) - not; एवम् (evam) - thus; धर्मम् (dharmam) - duty; प्रहास्यसि (prahāsyasi) - you will forsake;]
(He, having become endowed with calmness, bringing wild food, move, abandoning this anger, you will not thus forsake duty.)
You, endowed with calmness, should gather wild food and move on, abandoning this anger, so that you do not forsake your duty.
क्रोधो हि धर्मं हरति यतीनां दुःखसञ्चितम्। ततो धर्मविहीनानां गतिरिष्टा न विद्यते ॥१-३८-८॥
krodho hi dharmaṃ harati yatīnāṃ duḥkhasañcitam। tato dharmavihīnānāṃ gatiriṣṭā na vidyate ॥1-38-8॥
[क्रोधः (krodhaḥ) - anger; हि (hi) - indeed; धर्मम् (dharmaṃ) - virtue; हरति (harati) - destroys; यतीनाम् (yatīnām) - of ascetics; दुःखसञ्चितम् (duḥkhasañcitam) - accumulated by suffering; ततः (tataḥ) - therefore; धर्मविहीनानाम् (dharmavihīnānām) - of those devoid of virtue; गतिः (gatiḥ) - path; इष्टा (iṣṭā) - desired; न (na) - not; विद्यते (vidyate) - exists;]
(Anger indeed destroys the virtue accumulated by the suffering of ascetics. Therefore, the desired path does not exist for those devoid of virtue.)
Anger destroys the virtue that ascetics accumulate through suffering. Therefore, those who lack virtue do not have a desired path.
शम एव यतीनां हि क्षमिणां सिद्धिकारकः। क्षमावतामयं लोकः परश्चैव क्षमावताम् ॥१-३८-९॥
śama eva yatīnām hi kṣamiṇāṃ siddhikārakaḥ। kṣamāvatāmayaṃ lokaḥ paraścaiva kṣamāvatām ॥1-38-9॥
[शम (śama) - calmness; एव (eva) - indeed; यतीनां (yatīnām) - of the ascetics; हि (hi) - for; क्षमिणां (kṣamiṇāṃ) - of the forgiving ones; सिद्धिकारकः (siddhikārakaḥ) - cause of success; क्षमावताम् (kṣamāvatām) - of the patient ones; अयम् (ayam) - this; लोकः (lokaḥ) - world; परः (paraḥ) - beyond; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; क्षमावताम् (kṣamāvatām) - of the patient ones;]
(Calmness indeed is the cause of success for the ascetics and the forgiving ones; this world and beyond indeed belong to the patient ones.)
Calmness is truly the cause of success for ascetics and the forgiving. This world and the next belong to those who are patient.
तस्माच्चरेथाः सततं क्षमाशीलो जितेन्द्रियः। क्षमया प्राप्स्यसे लोकान्ब्रह्मणः समनन्तरान् ॥१-३८-१०॥
tasmāccarethāḥ satataṃ kṣamāśīlo jitendriyaḥ। kṣamayā prāpsyase lokānbrahmaṇaḥ samanantarān ॥1-38-10॥
[तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; चरेथाः (carethāḥ) - you should conduct yourself; सततम् (satatam) - always; क्षमाशीलः (kṣamāśīlaḥ) - forgiving by nature; जितेन्द्रियः (jitendriyaḥ) - having conquered the senses; क्षमया (kṣamayā) - by forgiveness; प्राप्स्यसे (prāpsyase) - you will attain; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; ब्रह्मणः (brahmaṇaḥ) - of Brahma; समनन्तरान् (samanantarān) - adjacent;]
(Therefore, you should conduct yourself always forgiving by nature, having conquered the senses. By forgiveness, you will attain the worlds adjacent to Brahma.)
Therefore, always conduct yourself with forgiveness and self-control. Through forgiveness, you will reach the realms close to Brahma.
मया तु शममास्थाय यच्छक्यं कर्तुमद्य वै। तत्करिष्येऽद्य ताताहं प्रेषयिष्ये नृपाय वै ॥१-३८-११॥
mayā tu śamam āsthāya yat śakyaṃ kartum adya vai। tat kariṣye'dya tātāhaṃ preṣayiṣye nṛpāya vai ॥1-38-11॥
[मया (mayā) - by me; तु (tu) - but; शमम् (śamam) - peace; आस्थाय (āsthāya) - having resorted to; यत् (yat) - which; शक्यम् (śakyam) - possible; कर्तुम् (kartum) - to do; अद्य (adya) - today; वै (vai) - indeed; तत् (tat) - that; करिष्ये (kariṣye) - I will do; अद्य (adya) - today; तात (tāta) - O father; अहम् (aham) - I; प्रेषयिष्ये (preṣayiṣye) - will send; नृपाय (nṛpāya) - to the king; वै (vai) - indeed;]
(By me, but having resorted to peace, which is possible to do today indeed, that I will do today, O father, I will send to the king indeed.)
I will indeed do today what is possible by resorting to peace, O father, and I will send it to the king.
मम पुत्रेण शप्तोऽसि बालेनाकृतबुद्धिना। ममेमां धर्षणां त्वत्तः प्रेक्ष्य राजन्नमर्षिणा ॥१-३८-१२॥
mama putreṇa śapto'si bālenākṛtabuddhinā। mamemāṃ dharṣaṇāṃ tvattaḥ prekṣya rājannamarṣiṇā ॥1-38-12॥
[मम (mama) - my; पुत्रेण (putreṇa) - by son; शप्तः (śaptaḥ) - cursed; असि (asi) - are; बालेन (bālena) - by a boy; अकृतबुद्धिना (akṛtabuddhinā) - with undeveloped intellect; मम (mama) - my; इमां (imāṃ) - this; धर्षणां (dharṣaṇāṃ) - insult; त्वत्तः (tvattaḥ) - from you; प्रेक्ष्य (prekṣya) - having seen; राजन् (rājan) - O king; अमर्षिणा (amarṣiṇā) - by the intolerant;]
(By my son, you are cursed by a boy with undeveloped intellect. Having seen this insult from you, O king, by the intolerant.)
You have been cursed by my son, a boy of undeveloped intellect. O king, having witnessed this insult from you, the intolerant one could not bear it.

एवमादिश्य शिष्यं स प्रेषयामास सुव्रतः। परिक्षिते नृपतये दयापन्नो महातपाः ॥१-३८-१३॥
evamādiśya śiṣyaṃ sa preṣayāmāsa suvrataḥ। parikṣite nṛpataye dayāpanno mahātapāḥ ॥1-38-13॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; आदिश्य (ādiśya) - instructing; शिष्यं (śiṣyam) - disciple; स (sa) - he; प्रेषयामास (preṣayāmāsa) - sent; सुव्रतः (suvrataḥ) - the virtuous one; परिक्षिते (parikṣite) - to Parikshit; नृपतये (nṛpataye) - to the king; दयापन्नः (dayāpannaḥ) - compassionate; महातपाः (mahātapāḥ) - great ascetic;]
(Thus instructing the disciple, he, the virtuous one, sent him to King Parikshit, being compassionate, the great ascetic.)
After instructing his disciple in this manner, the virtuous sage, filled with compassion, sent him to King Parikshit, the great ascetic.
संदिश्य कुशलप्रश्नं कार्यवृत्तान्तमेव च। शिष्यं गौरमुखं नाम शीलवन्तं समाहितम् ॥१-३८-१४॥
saṃdiśya kuśalapraśnaṃ kāryavṛttāntameva ca। śiṣyaṃ gaurmukhaṃ nāma śīlavantaṃ samāhitam ॥1-38-14॥
[संदिश्य (saṃdiśya) - having instructed; कुशलप्रश्नं (kuśalapraśnaṃ) - welfare inquiry; कार्यवृत्तान्तम् (kāryavṛttāntam) - business matters; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and; शिष्यं (śiṣyam) - disciple; गौरमुखं (gaurmukham) - Gaurmukha; नाम (nāma) - by name; शीलवन्तं (śīlavantam) - virtuous; समाहितम् (samāhitam) - attentive;]
(Having instructed the welfare inquiry and business matters, the disciple named Gaurmukha, virtuous and attentive.)
After instructing the disciple named Gaurmukha, who was virtuous and attentive, about the welfare inquiry and business matters, the tasks were set in motion.
सोऽभिगम्य ततः शीघ्रं नरेन्द्रं कुरुवर्धनम्। विवेश भवनं राज्ञः पूर्वं द्वाःस्थैर्निवेदितः ॥१-३८-१५॥
so'bhigamya tataḥ śīghraṃ narendraṃ kuruvardhanam। viveśa bhavanaṃ rājñaḥ pūrvaṃ dvāḥsthairniveditaḥ ॥1-38-15॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अभिगम्य (abhigamya) - having approached; ततः (tataḥ) - then; शीघ्रम् (śīghram) - quickly; नरेन्द्रम् (narendram) - king; कुरुवर्धनम् (kuruvardhanam) - Kuruvardhana; विवेश (viveśa) - entered; भवनम् (bhavanam) - palace; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - of the king; पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - before; द्वाःस्थैः (dvāḥsthaiḥ) - by the gatekeepers; निवेदितः (niveditaḥ) - announced;]
(He, having approached then quickly the king Kuruvardhana, entered the palace of the king, announced by the gatekeepers before.)

पूजितश्च नरेन्द्रेण द्विजो गौरमुखस्ततः। आचख्यौ परिविश्रान्तो राज्ञे सर्वमशेषतः ॥ शमीकवचनं घोरं यथोक्तं मन्त्रिसंनिधौ ॥१-३८-१६॥

[पूजितः (pūjitaḥ) - worshipped; च (ca) - and; नरेन्द्रेण (narendreṇa) - by the king; द्विजः (dvijaḥ) - the Brahmin; गौरमुखः (gauramukhaḥ) - Gauramukha; ततः (tataḥ) - then; आचख्यौ (ācakhyau) - told; परिविश्रान्तः (pariviśrāntaḥ) - rested; राज्ञे (rājñe) - to the king; सर्वम् (sarvam) - everything; अशेषतः (aśeṣataḥ) - completely; शमीकवचनम् (śamīkavacanam) - words of Śamīka; घोरम् (ghoram) - terrible; यथोक्तम् (yathoktam) - as said; मन्त्रिसंनिधौ (mantrisaṃnidhau) - in the presence of ministers;]
(Worshipped by the king, the Brahmin Gauramukha then told everything completely to the king, having rested, the terrible words of Śamīka as said, in the presence of ministers.)

शमीको नाम राजेन्द्र विषये वर्तते तव। ऋषिः परमधर्मात्मा दान्तः शान्तो महातपाः ॥१-३८-१७॥
śamīko nāma rājendra viṣaye vartate tava। ṛṣiḥ paramadharmātmā dāntaḥ śānto mahātapāḥ ॥1-38-17॥
[शमीको (śamīko) - Śamīka; नाम (nāma) - named; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; विषये (viṣaye) - in the kingdom; वर्तते (vartate) - exists; तव (tava) - your; ऋषिः (ṛṣiḥ) - sage; परमधर्मात्मा (paramadharmātmā) - of supreme virtue; दान्तः (dāntaḥ) - self-controlled; शान्तः (śāntaḥ) - peaceful; महातपाः (mahātapāḥ) - great ascetic;]

तस्य त्वया नरव्याघ्र सर्पः प्राणैर्वियोजितः। अवसक्तो धनुष्कोट्या स्कन्धे भरतसत्तम ॥ क्षान्तवांस्तव तत्कर्म पुत्रस्तस्य न चक्षमे ॥१-३८-१८॥
tasya tvayā naravyāghra sarpaḥ prāṇairviyojitaḥ। avasakto dhanuṣkoṭyā skandhe bharatasattama ॥ kṣāntavāṃstava tatkarma putrastasya na cakṣame ॥1-38-18॥
[तस्य (tasya) - his; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; नरव्याघ्र (naravyāghra) - O tiger among men; सर्पः (sarpaḥ) - snake; प्राणैः (prāṇaiḥ) - with life; वियोजितः (viyojitaḥ) - deprived; अवसक्तः (avasaktaḥ) - hanging; धनुष्कोट्या (dhanuṣkoṭyā) - by the bow's end; स्कन्धे (skandhe) - on the shoulder; भरतसत्तम (bharatasattama) - O best of the Bharatas; क्षान्तवान् (kṣāntavān) - forgiven; तव (tava) - your; तत् (tat) - that; कर्म (karma) - act; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; तस्य (tasya) - his; न (na) - not; चक्षमे (cakṣame) - tolerated;]
(His snake was deprived of life by you, O tiger among men, hanging by the bow's end on the shoulder, O best of the Bharatas. Your son forgave that act, but his did not tolerate.)

तेन शप्तोऽसि राजेन्द्र पितुरज्ञातमद्य वै। तक्षकः सप्तरात्रेण मृत्युस्ते वै भविष्यति ॥१-३८-१९॥
tena śapto'si rājendra piturajñātamadya vai। takṣakaḥ saptarātreṇa mṛtyuste vai bhaviṣyati ॥1-38-19॥
[तेन (tena) - by him; शप्तः (śaptaḥ) - cursed; असि (asi) - you are; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; पितुः (pituḥ) - of father; अज्ञातम् (ajñātam) - unknown; अद्य (adya) - today; वै (vai) - indeed; तक्षकः (takṣakaḥ) - Takshaka; सप्त (sapta) - seven; रात्रेण (rātreṇa) - by nights; मृत्युः (mṛtyuḥ) - death; ते (te) - your; वै (vai) - indeed; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be;]
(By him, you are cursed, O king, unknown to your father, today indeed. Takshaka, in seven nights, your death indeed will be.)
You have been cursed by him, O King, without your father's knowledge, today indeed. Takshaka will bring about your death in seven days.
तत्र रक्षां कुरुष्वेति पुनः पुनरथाब्रवीत्। तदन्यथा न शक्यं च कर्तुं केनचिदप्युत ॥१-३८-२०॥
tatra rakṣāṃ kuruṣveti punaḥ punarathābravīt। tadanyathā na śakyaṃ ca kartuṃ kenacidapyuta ॥1-38-20॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; रक्षाम् (rakṣām) - protection; कुरुष्व (kuruṣva) - do; इति (iti) - thus; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; अथ (atha) - then; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; तत् (tad) - that; अन्यथा (anyathā) - otherwise; न (na) - not; शक्यं (śakyaṃ) - possible; च (ca) - and; कर्तुं (kartuṃ) - to do; केनचित् (kenacit) - by anyone; अपि (api) - even; उत (uta) - indeed;]
(There, do protection, thus again and again then said. That otherwise not possible and to do by anyone even indeed.)
There, he repeatedly said, 'Provide protection there.' Otherwise, it is not possible for anyone to do it.
न हि शक्नोति संयन्तुं पुत्रं कोपसमन्वितम्। ततोऽहं प्रेषितस्तेन तव राजन्हितार्थिना ॥१-३८-२१॥
na hi śaknoti saṃyantuṃ putraṃ kopasamanvitam। tato'ham preṣitastena tava rājan hitārthinā ॥1-38-21॥

(Indeed, he is not able to control the son filled with anger. Therefore, I was sent by him for your welfare, O king.)
He cannot control his son who is filled with anger, so I have been sent by him for your welfare, O king.
इति श्रुत्वा वचो घोरं स राजा कुरुनन्दनः। पर्यतप्यत तत्पापं कृत्वा राजा महातपाः ॥१-३८-२२॥
iti śrutvā vaco ghoraṃ sa rājā kurunandanaḥ। paryatapyata tatpāpaṃ kṛtvā rājā mahātapāḥ ॥1-38-22॥
[इति (iti) - thus; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; वचः (vacaḥ) - words; घोरं (ghoraṃ) - terrible; सः (saḥ) - he; राजा (rājā) - king; कुरुनन्दनः (kurunandanaḥ) - descendant of Kuru; पर्यतप्यत (paryatapyata) - lamented; तत् (tat) - that; पापं (pāpaṃ) - sin; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having committed; राजा (rājā) - king; महातपाः (mahātapāḥ) - greatly penitent;]
(Thus, having heard the terrible words, he, the king, descendant of Kuru, lamented having committed that sin, the king greatly penitent.)
Upon hearing those terrible words, the king, a descendant of Kuru, deeply regretted the sin he had committed, showing great penitence.
तं च मौनव्रतधरं श्रुत्वा मुनिवरं तदा। भूय एवाभवद्राजा शोकसन्तप्तमानसः ॥१-३८-२३॥
taṃ ca maunavratadharaṃ śrutvā munivaraṃ tadā। bhūya evābhavadrājā śokasantaptamānasaḥ ॥1-38-23॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; च (ca) - and; मौनव्रतधरं (maunavratadharaṃ) - vow of silence holder; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; मुनिवरं (munivaraṃ) - great sage; तदा (tadā) - then; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - again; एव (eva) - indeed; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; राजा (rājā) - king; शोकसन्तप्तमानसः (śokasantaptamānasaḥ) - grief-stricken mind;]
(Him and vow of silence holder having heard great sage then again indeed became king grief-stricken mind.)
Upon hearing the great sage who held a vow of silence, the king once again became deeply saddened.
अनुक्रोशात्मतां तस्य शमीकस्यावधार्य तु। पर्यतप्यत भूयोऽपि कृत्वा तत्किल्बिषं मुनेः ॥१-३८-२४॥
anukrośātmatāṃ tasya śamīkasyāvadhārya tu। paryatapyata bhūyo'pi kṛtvā tatkilbiṣaṃ muneḥ ॥1-38-24॥
[अनुक्रोशात्मतां (anukrośātmatām) - compassionate nature; तस्य (tasya) - his; शमीकस्य (śamīkasya) - of Śamīka; अवधार्य (avadhārya) - having understood; तु (tu) - but; पर्यतप्यत (paryatapyata) - he repented; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - again; अपि (api) - also; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; तत् (tat) - that; किल्बिषं (kilbiṣam) - sin; मुनेः (muneḥ) - of the sage;]
(Having understood the compassionate nature of Śamīka, he repented again, having committed that sin against the sage.)
Realizing the compassionate nature of Śamīka, he felt remorse once more for the sin he had committed against the sage.
न हि मृत्युं तथा राजा श्रुत्वा वै सोऽन्वतप्यत। अशोचदमरप्रख्यो यथा कृत्वेह कर्म तत् ॥१-३८-२५॥
na hi mṛtyuṃ tathā rājā śrutvā vai so'nvatapyata. aśocadamara-prakhyo yathā kṛtveha karma tat ॥1-38-25॥
[न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; मृत्युम् (mṛtyum) - death; तथा (tathā) - thus; राजा (rājā) - king; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; वै (vai) - indeed; सः (saḥ) - he; अन्वतप्यत (anvatapyata) - regretted; अशोचत् (aśocat) - did not grieve; अमर (amara) - immortal; प्रख्यः (prakhyaḥ) - like; यथा (yathā) - as; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; इह (iha) - here; कर्म (karma) - deed; तत् (tat) - that;]
(The king, having heard thus of death, indeed regretted. He did not grieve, like an immortal, as having done that deed here.)
The king, upon hearing about death, indeed felt regret. However, he did not grieve, appearing like an immortal, as if he had accomplished that deed here.
ततस्तं प्रेषयामास राजा गौरमुखं तदा। भूयः प्रसादं भगवान्करोत्विति ममेति वै ॥१-३८-२६॥
tatastaṃ preṣayāmāsa rājā gauramukhaṃ tadā। bhūyaḥ prasādaṃ bhagavānkarotviti mameti vai ॥1-38-26॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तं (taṃ) - him; प्रेषयामास (preṣayāmāsa) - sent; राजा (rājā) - king; गौरमुखं (gauramukhaṃ) - Gauramukha; तदा (tadā) - then; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - again; प्रसादं (prasādaṃ) - grace; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the Lord; करोतु (karotu) - may do; इति (iti) - thus; मम (mama) - my; इति (iti) - thus; वै (vai) - indeed;]
(Then the king sent Gauramukha. May the Lord again bestow grace, thus indeed is mine.)
Then the king sent Gauramukha, saying, "May the Lord bestow his grace again, indeed this is mine."
तस्मिंश्च गतमात्रे वै राजा गौरमुखे तदा। मन्त्रिभिर्मन्त्रयामास सह संविग्नमानसः ॥१-३८-२७॥
tasmiṁśca gatamātre vai rājā gauramukhe tadā। mantribhirmantrayāmāsa saha saṁvignamānasaḥ ॥1-38-27॥
[तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; च (ca) - and; गतमात्रे (gatamātre) - just arrived; वै (vai) - indeed; राजा (rājā) - king; गौरमुखे (gauramukhe) - Gauramukha; तदा (tadā) - then; मन्त्रिभिः (mantribhiḥ) - with ministers; मन्त्रयामास (mantrayāmāsa) - consulted; सह (saha) - with; संविग्नमानसः (saṁvignamānasaḥ) - anxious mind;]
(In that moment, when Gauramukha had just arrived, the king, with an anxious mind, consulted with his ministers.)
At that time, when Gauramukha had just arrived, the king, feeling anxious, consulted with his ministers.
निश्चित्य मन्त्रिभिश्चैव सहितो मन्त्रतत्त्ववित्। प्रासादं कारयामास एकस्तम्भं सुरक्षितम् ॥१-३८-२८॥
niścitya mantribhiścaiva sahito mantratattvavit। prāsādaṃ kārayāmāsa ekastambhaṃ surakṣitam ॥1-38-28॥
[निश्चित्य (niścitya) - having decided; मन्त्रिभिः (mantribhiḥ) - with ministers; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; सहितः (sahitaḥ) - together; मन्त्रतत्त्ववित् (mantratattvavit) - knower of the essence of counsel; प्रासादम् (prāsādam) - palace; कारयामास (kārayāmāsa) - caused to be built; एकस्तम्भम् (ekastambham) - with a single pillar; सुरक्षितम् (surakṣitam) - well-protected;]
(Having decided with ministers and indeed together, the knower of the essence of counsel caused a well-protected palace with a single pillar to be built.)
After consulting with his ministers and being well-versed in the essence of counsel, he ordered the construction of a well-protected palace supported by a single pillar.
रक्षां च विदधे तत्र भिषजश्चौषधानि च। ब्राह्मणान्सिद्धमन्त्रांश्च सर्वतो वै न्यवेशयत् ॥१-३८-२९॥
rakṣāṃ ca vidadhe tatra bhiṣajaś cauṣadhāni ca। brāhmaṇān siddhamantrāṃś ca sarvato vai nyaveśayat ॥1-38-29॥
[रक्षाम् (rakṣām) - protection; च (ca) - and; विदधे (vidadhe) - arranged; तत्र (tatra) - there; भिषजः (bhiṣajaḥ) - physicians; च (ca) - and; औषधानि (auṣadhāni) - medicines; च (ca) - and; ब्राह्मणान् (brāhmaṇān) - Brahmins; सिद्धमन्त्रान् (siddhamantrān) - perfected in mantras; च (ca) - and; सर्वतः (sarvataḥ) - everywhere; वै (vai) - indeed; न्यवेशयत् (nyaveśayat) - stationed;]
(He arranged protection there, and stationed physicians and medicines, and Brahmins perfected in mantras everywhere indeed.)
He ensured protection by arranging for physicians and medicines, and stationed Brahmins skilled in mantras all around.
राजकार्याणि तत्रस्थः सर्वाण्येवाकरोच्च सः। मन्त्रिभिः सह धर्मज्ञः समन्तात्परिरक्षितः ॥१-३८-३०॥
rājakāryāṇi tatrasthaḥ sarvāṇyevākarocca saḥ। mantribhiḥ saha dharmajñaḥ samantātparirakṣitaḥ ॥1-38-30॥
[राजकार्याणि (rājakāryāṇi) - royal duties; तत्रस्थः (tatrasthaḥ) - situated there; सर्वाणि (sarvāṇi) - all; एव (eva) - indeed; अकरोत् (akarot) - performed; सः (saḥ) - he; मन्त्रिभिः (mantribhiḥ) - with ministers; सह (saha) - together; धर्मज्ञः (dharmajñaḥ) - knower of dharma; समन्तात् (samantāt) - all around; परिरक्षितः (parirakṣitaḥ) - protected;]
(He, situated there, indeed performed all the royal duties, together with the ministers, being a knower of dharma, protected all around.)
He, being well-versed in dharma, performed all the royal duties there, well-protected by the ministers all around.
प्राप्ते तु दिवसे तस्मिन्सप्तमे द्विजसत्तम। काश्यपोऽभ्यागमद्विद्वांस्तं राजानं चिकित्सितुम् ॥१-३८-३१॥
prāpte tu divase tasminsaptame dvijasattama। kāśyapo'bhyāgamadvidvāṃstaṃ rājānaṃ cikitsitum ॥1-38-31॥
[प्राप्ते (prāpte) - when arrived; तु (tu) - but; दिवसे (divase) - day; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - that; सप्तमे (saptame) - seventh; द्विजसत्तम (dvijasattama) - O best of the twice-born; काश्यपः (kāśyapaḥ) - Kashyapa; अभ्यागमत् (abhyāgamat) - arrived; विद्वान् (vidvān) - wise; तम् (tam) - that; राजानम् (rājānam) - king; चिकित्सितुम् (cikitsitum) - to treat;]
(When the seventh day arrived, O best of the twice-born, Kashyapa, the wise, came to treat that king.)
On the seventh day, O esteemed sage, the wise Kashyapa arrived to attend to the king.
श्रुतं हि तेन तदभूदद्य तं राजसत्तमम्। तक्षकः पन्नगश्रेष्ठो नेष्यते यमसादनम् ॥१-३८-३२॥
śrutaṃ hi tena tadabhūdadya taṃ rājasattamam। takṣakaḥ pannagaśreṣṭho neṣyate yamasādanam ॥1-38-32॥
[श्रुतम् (śrutam) - heard; हि (hi) - indeed; तेन (tena) - by him; तत् (tat) - that; अभूत् (abhūt) - became; अद्य (adya) - today; तम् (tam) - that; राजसत्तमम् (rājasattamam) - best of kings; तक्षकः (takṣakaḥ) - Takshaka; पन्नगश्रेष्ठः (pannagaśreṣṭhaḥ) - best of serpents; नेष्यते (neṣyate) - will lead; यमसादनम् (yamasādanam) - to the abode of Yama;]
(Indeed, it was heard by him that today Takshaka, the best of serpents, will lead that best of kings to the abode of Yama.)
It was reported to him that today Takshaka, the foremost of serpents, will take the noble king to the realm of Yama.
तं दष्टं पन्नगेन्द्रेण करिष्येऽहमपज्वरम्। तत्र मेऽर्थश्च धर्मश्च भवितेति विचिन्तयन् ॥१-३८-३३॥
taṁ daṣṭaṁ pannagēndreṇa kariṣye'hamapajvaram. tatra me'rthaśca dharmaśca bhavitēti vicintayan ॥1-38-33॥
[तं (taṁ) - that; दष्टं (daṣṭaṁ) - bitten; पन्नगेन्द्रेण (pannagēndreṇa) - by the king of serpents; करिष्ये (kariṣye) - I will make; अहम् (aham) - I; अपज्वरम् (apajvaram) - free from fever; तत्र (tatra) - there; मे (me) - my; अर्थश्च (arthaśca) - purpose and; धर्मश्च (dharmaśca) - duty and; भविता (bhavita) - will be; इति (iti) - thus; विचिन्तयन् (vicintayan) - thinking;]
(I will make that which is bitten by the king of serpents free from fever. There my purpose and duty will be thus thinking.)
Thinking thus, I will cure the one bitten by the king of serpents of fever. Therein lies my purpose and duty.
तं ददर्श स नागेन्द्रस्तक्षकः काश्यपं पथि। गच्छन्तमेकमनसं द्विजो भूत्वा वयोतिगः ॥१-३८-३४॥
taṁ dadarśa sa nāgendrastakṣakaḥ kāśyapaṁ pathi| gacchantamekamanasaṁ dvijo bhūtvā vayotigaḥ ॥1-38-34॥
[तं (taṁ) - him; ददर्श (dadarśa) - saw; स (sa) - he; नागेन्द्रः (nāgendraḥ) - king of serpents; तक्षकः (takṣakaḥ) - Takshaka; काश्यपं (kāśyapaṁ) - Kashyapa; पथि (pathi) - on the path; गच्छन्तम् (gacchantam) - going; एकमनसं (ekamanasaṁ) - with one mind; द्विजः (dvijaḥ) - Brahmin; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; वयोतिगः (vayotigaḥ) - aged;]
(He, the king of serpents, Takshaka, saw Kashyapa on the path, going with one mind, having become a Brahmin, aged.)
Takshaka, the king of serpents, noticed the aged Brahmin Kashyapa on his path, who was proceeding with a focused mind.
तमब्रवीत्पन्नगेन्द्रः काश्यपं मुनिपुङ्गवम्। क्व भवांस्त्वरितो याति किं च कार्यं चिकीर्षति ॥१-३८-३५॥
tamabravītpannagendraḥ kāśyapaṃ munipuṅgavam। kva bhavāṃstvarito yāti kiṃ ca kāryaṃ cikīrṣati ॥1-38-35॥
[तम् (tam) - him; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; पन्नगेन्द्रः (pannagendraḥ) - king of serpents; काश्यपं (kāśyapam) - Kashyapa; मुनिपुङ्गवम् (munipuṅgavam) - best of sages; क्व (kva) - where; भवान् (bhavān) - you; त्वरितः (tvaritaḥ) - hurriedly; याति (yāti) - going; किं (kiṃ) - what; च (ca) - and; कार्यं (kāryaṃ) - task; चिकीर्षति (cikīrṣati) - intends;]
(The king of serpents said to Kashyapa, the best of sages, "Where are you going hurriedly and what task do you intend?")
The king of serpents asked Kashyapa, the eminent sage, where he was hastening to and what task he intended to undertake.
काश्यप उवाच॥
kāśyapa uvāca॥
[काश्यप (kāśyapa) - Kashyapa; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
(Kashyapa said.)
Kashyapa spoke.
नृपं कुरुकुलोत्पन्नं परिक्षितमरिंदमम्। तक्षकः पन्नगश्रेष्ठस्तेजसाद्य प्रधक्ष्यति ॥१-३८-३६॥
nṛpaṃ kurukulotpannaṃ parikṣitamariṃdamam। takṣakaḥ pannagaśreṣṭhastejasādya pradhakṣyati ॥1-38-36॥
[नृपं (nṛpam) - king; कुरुकुलोत्पन्नं (kurukulotpannam) - born in the Kuru dynasty; परिक्षितम् (parikṣitam) - Parikshit; अरिंदमम् (ariṃdamam) - subduer of enemies; तक्षकः (takṣakaḥ) - Takshaka; पन्नगश्रेष्ठः (pannagaśreṣṭhaḥ) - best of serpents; तेजसा (tejasā) - by fire; अद्य (adya) - today; प्रधक्ष्यति (pradhakṣyati) - will burn;]
(The king born in the Kuru dynasty, Parikshit, subduer of enemies, will be burned by Takshaka, the best of serpents, by fire today.)
Today, Takshaka, the foremost of serpents, will burn King Parikshit, who was born in the Kuru dynasty and is known as the subduer of enemies, with his fiery power.
तं दष्टं पन्नगेन्द्रेण तेनाग्निसमतेजसा। पाण्डवानां कुलकरं राजानममितौजसम् ॥१-३८-३७॥
taṁ daṣṭaṁ pannagēndreṇa tēnāgnisamatējasā. pāṇḍavānāṁ kulakaraṁ rājānamamitāujasam ॥1-38-37॥
[तं (taṁ) - him; दष्टं (daṣṭaṁ) - bitten; पन्नगेन्द्रेण (pannagēndreṇa) - by the king of serpents; तेन (tēna) - by that; अग्निसमतेजसा (agnisamatējasā) - having fire-like brilliance; पाण्डवानां (pāṇḍavānāṁ) - of the Pandavas; कुलकरं (kulakaraṁ) - the doer of good to the family; राजानम (rājānam) - king; अमितौजसम् (amitāujasam) - of immeasurable energy;]
(Him bitten by the king of serpents, having fire-like brilliance, the doer of good to the Pandavas' family, the king of immeasurable energy.)
He, who was bitten by the king of serpents with fire-like brilliance, was the benefactor of the Pandavas' family and a king of immeasurable energy.
गच्छामि सौम्य त्वरितं सद्यः कर्तुमपज्वरम् ॥१-३८-३७॥
gacchāmi saumya tvaritaṃ sadyaḥ kartumapajvaram ॥1-38-37॥
[गच्छामि (gacchāmi) - I go; सौम्य (saumya) - gentle one; त्वरितं (tvaritaṃ) - quickly; सद्यः (sadyaḥ) - immediately; कर्तुम् (kartum) - to do; अपज्वरम् (apajvaram) - relief from fever;]
(I go, gentle one, quickly, immediately to do relief from fever.)
I am going quickly, gentle one, to immediately provide relief from the fever.
तक्षक उवाच॥
takṣaka uvāca॥
[तक्षक (takṣaka) - Takshaka; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
(Takshaka said.)
Takshaka spoke.
अहं स तक्षको ब्रह्मंस्तं धक्ष्यामि महीपतिम्। निवर्तस्व न शक्तस्त्वं मया दष्टं चिकित्सितुम् ॥१-३८-३८॥
ahaṁ sa takṣako brahmaṁstaṁ dhakṣyāmi mahīpatim। nivartasva na śaktastvaṁ mayā daṣṭaṁ cikitsitum ॥1-38-38॥
[अहं (ahaṁ) - I; स (sa) - that; तक्षकः (takṣakaḥ) - Takshaka; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brahman; तम् (tam) - that; धक्ष्यामि (dhakṣyāmi) - will burn; महीपतिम् (mahīpatim) - the king; निवर्तस्व (nivartasva) - turn back; न (na) - not; शक्तः (śaktaḥ) - capable; त्वम् (tvam) - you; मया (mayā) - by me; दष्टम् (daṣṭam) - bitten; चिकित्सितुम् (cikitsitum) - to heal;]
(I, that Takshaka, O Brahman, will burn that king. Turn back, you are not capable of healing one bitten by me.)
I am Takshaka, O Brahman, and I will burn the king. Turn back, for you are not capable of healing someone bitten by me.
काश्यप उवाच॥

[काश्यप (kāśyapa) - Kashyapa; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
(Kashyapa said.)
Kashyapa spoke.
अहं तं नृपतिं नाग त्वया दष्टमपज्वरम्। करिष्य इति मे बुद्धिर्विद्याबलमुपाश्रितः ॥१-३८-३९॥
ahaṁ taṁ nṛpatiṁ nāga tvayā daṣṭamapajvaram। kariṣya iti me buddhirvidyābalamupāśritaḥ ॥1-38-39॥
[अहं (ahaṁ) - I; तं (taṁ) - that; नृपतिं (nṛpatiṁ) - king; नाग (nāga) - serpent; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; दष्टम् (daṣṭam) - bitten; अपज्वरम् (apajvaram) - free from fever; करिष्य (kariṣya) - will do; इति (iti) - thus; मे (me) - my; बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - intention; विद्याबलम् (vidyābalam) - power of knowledge; उपाश्रितः (upāśritaḥ) - resorted to;]
(I will free that king bitten by you, serpent, from fever; thus is my intention resorted to the power of knowledge.)
I intend to cure the king bitten by you, serpent, from fever, relying on the power of knowledge.
