दष्टं यदि मयेह त्वं शक्तः किञ्चिच्चिकित्सितुम्। ततो वृक्षं मया दष्टमिमं जीवय काश्यप ॥१-३९-१॥
daṣṭaṃ yadi mayeha tvaṃ śaktaḥ kiñciccikitsitum. tato vṛkṣaṃ mayā daṣṭamimaṃ jīvaya kāśyapa ॥1-39-1॥

परं मन्त्रबलं यत्ते तद्दर्शय यतस्व च। न्यग्रोधमेनं धक्ष्यामि पश्यतस्ते द्विजोत्तम ॥१-३९-२॥

दश नागेन्द्र वृक्षं त्वं यमेनमभिमन्यसे। अहमेनं त्वया दष्टं जीवयिष्ये भुजङ्गम ॥१-३९-३॥
daśa nāgendra vṛkṣaṃ tvaṃ yamenamabhimanyase। ahamenaṃ tvayā daṣṭaṃ jīvayiṣye bhujaṅgama ॥1-39-3॥

स वृक्षस्तेन दष्टः सन्सद्य एव महाद्युते। आशीविषविषोपेतः प्रजज्वाल समन्ततः ॥१-३९-५॥
sa vṛkṣas tena daṣṭaḥ san sadya eva mahādyuteḥ। āśīviṣaviṣopetaḥ prajajvāla samantataḥ ॥1-39-5॥
[स (sa) - that; वृक्षः (vṛkṣaḥ) - tree; तेन (tena) - by him; दष्टः (daṣṭaḥ) - bitten; सन (san) - being; सद्य (sadya) - immediately; एव (eva) - indeed; महाद्युते (mahādyute) - with great splendor; आशीविषविषोपेतः (āśīviṣaviṣopetaḥ) - infused with serpent's poison; प्रजज्वाल (prajajvāla) - blazed; समन्ततः (samantataḥ) - all around;]
(That tree, being bitten by him, immediately indeed with great splendor, infused with serpent's poison, blazed all around.)
The tree, bitten by him, was immediately engulfed in flames, shining brightly, as it was infused with the serpent's poison.
तं दग्ध्वा स नगं नागः काश्यपं पुनरब्रवीत्। कुरु यत्नं द्विजश्रेष्ठ जीवयैनं वनस्पतिम् ॥१-३९-६॥
taṃ dagdhvā sa nagaṃ nāgaḥ kāśyapaṃ punarabravīt. kuru yatnaṃ dvijaśreṣṭha jīvayainaṃ vanaspatim ॥1-39-6॥

(Having burnt him, the serpent again said to Kashyapa, "O best of the twice-born, make an effort to revive this tree.")
After burning the forest, the serpent spoke again to Kashyapa, urging him, "O revered sage, please try to bring this tree back to life."
भस्मीभूतं ततो वृक्षं पन्नगेन्द्रस्य तेजसा। भस्म सर्वं समाहृत्य काश्यपो वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥१-३९-७॥
bhasmībhūtaṃ tato vṛkṣaṃ pannagendrasya tejasā| bhasma sarvaṃ samāhṛtya kāśyapo vākyamabravīt ॥1-39-7॥
[भस्मीभूतं (bhasmībhūtaṃ) - turned to ashes; ततः (tataḥ) - then; वृक्षं (vṛkṣaṃ) - tree; पन्नगेन्द्रस्य (pannagendrasya) - of the king of serpents; तेजसा (tejasā) - by the brilliance; भस्म (bhasma) - ashes; सर्वं (sarvaṃ) - all; समाहृत्य (samāhṛtya) - having gathered; काश्यपः (kāśyapaḥ) - Kashyapa; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - words; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke;]
(Then the tree was turned to ashes by the brilliance of the king of serpents. Having gathered all the ashes, Kashyapa spoke words.)
The tree was reduced to ashes by the power of the serpent king. Kashyapa collected all the ashes and spoke.
विद्याबलं पन्नगेन्द्र पश्य मेऽस्मिन्वनस्पतौ। अहं सञ्जीवयाम्येनं पश्यतस्ते भुजङ्गम ॥१-३९-८॥
vidyābalaṁ pannagendra paśya me'sminvanaspatau। ahaṁ sañjīvayāmyenaṁ paśyataste bhujaṅgama ॥1-39-8॥

ततः स भगवान्विद्वान्काश्यपो द्विजसत्तमः। भस्मराशीकृतं वृक्षं विद्यया समजीवयत् ॥१-३९-९॥
tataḥ sa bhagavān vidvān kāśyapo dvijasattamaḥ। bhasmarāśīkṛtaṃ vṛkṣaṃ vidyayā samajīvayat ॥1-39-9॥

Then the wise and revered sage Kashyapa, the best among the twice-born, used his knowledge to bring back to life a tree that had been reduced to ashes.
अङ्कुरं तं स कृतवांस्ततः पर्णद्वयान्वितम्। पलाशिनं शाखिनं च तथा विटपिनं पुनः ॥१-३९-१०॥
aṅkuraṃ taṃ sa kṛtavāṃstataḥ parṇadvayānvitam| palāśinaṃ śākhinaṃ ca tathā viṭapinaṃ punaḥ ॥1-39-10॥
[अङ्कुरं (aṅkuraṃ) - sprout; तं (taṃ) - that; स (sa) - he; कृतवान् (kṛtavān) - made; ततः (tataḥ) - then; पर्णद्वयान्वितम् (parṇadvayānvitam) - with two leaves; पलाशिनं (palāśinam) - having leaves; शाखिनं (śākhinaṃ) - having branches; च (ca) - and; तथा (tathā) - thus; विटपिनं (viṭapinaṃ) - having twigs; पुनः (punaḥ) - again;]
(He made that sprout, then with two leaves, having leaves, branches, and thus having twigs again.)
He created that sprout, which then had two leaves, and it grew with leaves, branches, and twigs again.
तं दृष्ट्वा जीवितं वृक्षं काश्यपेन महात्मना। उवाच तक्षको ब्रह्मन्नेतदत्यद्भुतं त्वयि ॥१-३९-११॥
taṁ dṛṣṭvā jīvitaṁ vṛkṣaṁ kāśyapena mahātmanā। uvāca takṣako brahmannetadatyadbhutaṁ tvayi ॥1-39-11॥

(Having seen that the tree was alive by Kashyapa, the great soul, Takshaka said, 'O Brahman, this is very wonderful in you.')
Upon seeing the tree brought to life by the great sage Kashyapa, Takshaka remarked, 'O Brahman, this is truly astonishing in you.'
विप्रेन्द्र यद्विषं हन्या मम वा मद्विधस्य वा। कं त्वमर्थमभिप्रेप्सुर्यासि तत्र तपोधन ॥१-३९-१२॥
viprendra yad viṣaṃ hanyā mama vā madvidhasya vā। kaṃ tvam artham abhiprepsur yāsi tatra tapodhana ॥1-39-12॥
[विप्रेन्द्र (viprendra) - O chief of the twice-born; यत् (yat) - which; विषम् (viṣam) - poison; हन्याः (hanyāḥ) - you may kill; मम (mama) - my; वा (vā) - or; मद्विधस्य (madvidhasya) - of one like me; वा (vā) - or; कम् (kam) - what; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अर्थम् (artham) - purpose; अभिप्रेप्सुः (abhiprepsuḥ) - desiring; यासि (yāsi) - you go; तत्र (tatra) - there; तपोधन (tapodhana) - O sage;]
(O chief of the twice-born, which poison you may kill, my or of one like me, or what purpose you desiring go there, O sage.)
O chief of the twice-born, what poison do you intend to destroy, mine or of one like me, or for what purpose are you going there, O sage?
यत्तेऽभिलषितं प्राप्तुं फलं तस्मान्नृपोत्तमात्। अहमेव प्रदास्यामि तत्ते यद्यपि दुर्लभम् ॥१-३९-१३॥
yatte'bhilaṣitaṃ prāptuṃ phalaṃ tasmānnṛpottamāt। ahameva pradāsyāmi tatte yadyapi durlabham ॥1-39-13॥
[यत् (yat) - that; ते (te) - your; अभिलषितं (abhilaṣitaṃ) - desired; प्राप्तुं (prāptuṃ) - to obtain; फलं (phalaṃ) - fruit; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - from that; नृपोत्तमात् (nṛpottamāt) - from the best of kings; अहम् (aham) - I; एव (eva) - indeed; प्रदास्यामि (pradāsyāmi) - will give; तत् (tat) - that; ते (te) - to you; यद्यपि (yadyapi) - although; दुर्लभम् (durlabham) - difficult to obtain;]
(That which is desired by you to obtain, the fruit from the best of kings, I indeed will give that to you, although it is difficult to obtain.)
I will grant you the desired reward from the best of kings, even though it is difficult to obtain.
विप्रशापाभिभूते च क्षीणायुषि नराधिपे। घटमानस्य ते विप्र सिद्धिः संशयिता भवेत् ॥१-३९-१४॥
vipraśāpābhibhūte ca kṣīṇāyuṣi narādhipe| ghaṭamānasya te vipra siddhiḥ saṃśayitā bhavet ॥1-39-14॥
[विप्रशापाभिभूते (vipraśāpābhibhūte) - overcome by a Brahmin's curse; च (ca) - and; क्षीणायुषि (kṣīṇāyuṣi) - whose lifespan is diminished; नराधिपे (narādhipe) - in the king; घटमानस्य (ghaṭamānasya) - of the one who is striving; ते (te) - your; विप्र (vipra) - O Brahmin; सिद्धिः (siddhiḥ) - success; संशयिता (saṃśayitā) - doubtful; भवेत् (bhavet) - would be;]
(Overcome by a Brahmin's curse and whose lifespan is diminished in the king, of the one who is striving, your success, O Brahmin, would be doubtful.)
O Brahmin, in the king who is overcome by a Brahmin's curse and whose lifespan is diminished, your success would be doubtful as he strives.
ततो यशः प्रदीप्तं ते त्रिषु लोकेषु विश्रुतम्। विरश्मिरिव घर्मांशुरन्तर्धानमितो व्रजेत् ॥१-३९-१५॥
tato yaśaḥ pradīptaṃ te triṣu lokeṣu viśrutam। viraśmiriva gharmāṃśurantardhānamito vrajet ॥1-39-15॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; यशः (yaśaḥ) - fame; प्रदीप्तं (pradīptaṃ) - illuminated; ते (te) - your; त्रिषु (triṣu) - in the three; लोकेषु (lokeṣu) - worlds; विश्रुतम् (viśrutam) - renowned; विरश्मिः (viraśmiḥ) - like the sun; इव (iva) - like; घर्मांशुः (gharmāṃśuḥ) - sun; अन्तर्धानम् (antardhānam) - disappearance; इतः (itaḥ) - from here; व्रजेत् (vrajet) - should go;]
(Then your fame, illuminated and renowned in the three worlds, should disappear from here like the sun's rays.)
Then your fame, which is bright and well-known in the three worlds, should vanish from here like the rays of the sun.

धनार्थी याम्यहं तत्र तन्मे दित्स भुजङ्गम। ततोऽहं विनिवर्तिष्ये गृहायोरगसत्तम ॥१-३९-१६॥
dhanārthī yāmyahaṃ tatra tanme ditsa bhujaṅgama। tato'haṃ vinivartiṣye gṛhāyoragasattama ॥1-39-16॥
[धनार्थी (dhanārthī) - wealth-seeker; यामि (yāmi) - I go; अहम् (aham) - I; तत्र (tatra) - there; तत् (tat) - that; मे (me) - to me; दित्स (ditsa) - give; भुजङ्गम (bhujaṅgama) - serpent; ततः (tataḥ) - then; अहम् (aham) - I; विनिवर्तिष्ये (vinivartiṣye) - will return; गृहाय (gṛhāya) - home; उरगसत्तम (uragasattama) - O best of serpents;]
(Wealth-seeker, I go there, give me that, O serpent. Then I will return home, O best of serpents.)
I am seeking wealth and I go there, O serpent, give me that. Then, O best of serpents, I will return home.

यावद्धनं प्रार्थयसे तस्माद्राज्ञस्ततोऽधिकम्। अहं तेऽद्य प्रदास्यामि निवर्तस्व द्विजोत्तम ॥१-३९-१७॥
yāvaddhanaṃ prārthayase tasmādrājñastato'dhikam। ahaṃ te'dya pradāsyāmi nivartasva dvijottama ॥1-39-17॥
[यावत् (yāvat) - as much as; धनम् (dhanam) - wealth; प्रार्थयसे (prārthayase) - you desire; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - than that; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - of the king; ततः (tataḥ) - then; अधिकम् (adhikam) - more; अहम् (aham) - I; ते (te) - to you; अद्य (adya) - today; प्रदास्यामि (pradāsyāmi) - will give; निवर्तस्व (nivartasva) - return; द्विजोत्तम (dvijottama) - O best of the twice-born;]

(Having heard the words of Takshaka, Kashyapa, the best of the twice-born, pondered with great energy towards the king, wise.)
Upon hearing Takshaka's words, the wise Kashyapa, best among the twice-born, contemplated with great energy about the king.
दिव्यज्ञानः स तेजस्वी ज्ञात्वा तं नृपतिं तदा। क्षीणायुषं पाण्डवेयमपावर्तत काश्यपः ॥१-३९-१९॥
divyajñānaḥ sa tejasvī jñātvā taṃ nṛpatiṃ tadā। kṣīṇāyuṣaṃ pāṇḍaveyamapāvartata kāśyapaḥ ॥1-39-19॥
[दिव्यज्ञानः (divyajñānaḥ) - divine knowledge; स (sa) - he; तेजस्वी (tejasvī) - radiant; ज्ञात्वा (jñātvā) - having known; तं (taṃ) - that; नृपतिं (nṛpatiṃ) - king; तदा (tadā) - then; क्षीणायुषं (kṣīṇāyuṣaṃ) - short-lived; पाण्डवेयम् (pāṇḍaveyam) - son of Pandu; अपावर्तत (apāvartata) - turned away; काश्यपः (kāśyapaḥ) - Kashyapa;]
(Divine knowledge, he, radiant, having known that king then, short-lived son of Pandu, turned away Kashyapa.)
Kashyapa, possessing divine knowledge and radiance, realized that the king was short-lived and then turned away from the son of Pandu.
लब्ध्वा वित्तं मुनिवरस्तक्षकाद्यावदीप्सितम् ॥१-३९-१९॥
labdhvā vittaṃ munivarastakṣakādyāvadīpsitam ॥1-39-19॥
[लब्ध्वा (labdhvā) - having obtained; वित्तं (vittaṃ) - wealth; मुनिवरः (munivaraḥ) - the best of sages; तक्षकात् (takṣakāt) - from Takshaka; यावत् (yāvat) - as much as; ईप्सितम् (īpsitam) - desired;]
(Having obtained the wealth desired from Takshaka, the best of sages.)
The best of sages obtained the desired wealth from Takshaka.
निवृत्ते काश्यपे तस्मिन्समयेन महात्मनि। जगाम तक्षकस्तूर्णं नगरं नागसाह्वयम् ॥१-३९-२०॥
nivṛtte kāśyape tasminsamayena mahātmani। jagāma takṣakastūrṇaṃ nagaraṃ nāgasāhvayam ॥1-39-20॥
[निवृत्ते (nivṛtte) - when departed; काश्यपे (kāśyape) - Kashyapa; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - at that; समयेन (samayena) - time; महात्मनि (mahātmani) - great soul; जगाम (jagāma) - went; तक्षकः (takṣakaḥ) - Takshaka; तूर्णम् (tūrṇam) - quickly; नगरम् (nagaram) - city; नागसाह्वयम् (nāgasāhvayam) - called Nagasahvaya;]
(When Kashyapa, the great soul, had departed at that time, Takshaka quickly went to the city called Nagasahvaya.)
After Kashyapa, the revered sage, had left, Takshaka swiftly proceeded to the city known as Nagasahvaya.
अथ शुश्राव गच्छन्स तक्षको जगतीपतिम्। मन्त्रागदैर्विषहरै रक्ष्यमाणं प्रयत्नतः ॥१-३९-२१॥
atha śuśrāva gacchans takṣako jagatīpatim। mantrāgadairviṣaharai rakṣyamāṇaṃ prayatnataḥ ॥1-39-21॥

तच्च सर्वं स राजेन्द्रः प्रतिजग्राह वीर्यवान्। कृत्वा च तेषां कार्याणि गम्यतामित्युवाच तान् ॥१-३९-२६॥

गतेषु तेषु नागेषु तापसच्छद्मरूपिषु। अमात्यान्सुहृदश्चैव प्रोवाच स नराधिपः ॥१-३९-२७॥

भक्षयन्तु भवन्तो वै स्वादूनीमानि सर्वशः। तापसैरुपनीतानि फलानि सहिता मया ॥१-३९-२८॥
bhakṣayantu bhavanto vai svādūnīmāni sarvaśaḥ। tāpasairupanītāni phalāni sahitā mayā ॥1-39-28॥

सत्यवागस्तु स मुनिः कृमिको मां दशत्वयम्। तक्षको नाम भूत्वा वै तथा परिहृतं भवेत् ॥१-३९-३१॥

ते चैनमन्ववर्तन्त मन्त्रिणः कालचोदिताः। एवमुक्त्वा स राजेन्द्रो ग्रीवायां संनिवेश्य ह ॥ कृमिकं प्राहसत्तूर्णं मुमूर्षुर्नष्टचेतनः ॥१-३९-३२॥
te cai nam anvavartanta mantriṇaḥ kālacoditāḥ। evam uktvā sa rājendro grīvāyāṃ saṃniveśya ha ॥ kṛmikaṃ prāhasattūrṇaṃ mumūrṣur naṣṭacetanaḥ ॥1-39-32॥

(They, the ministers, prompted by time, followed him. Having thus spoken, the king, placing a worm on the neck, laughed quickly, desiring to die, unconscious.)
