evamuktaḥ sa tejasvī śṛṅgī kopasamanvitaḥ। mṛtadhāraṃ guruṃ śrutvā paryatapyata manyunā ॥1-37-1॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - addressed; सः (saḥ) - he; तेजस्वी (tejasvī) - brilliant; शृङ्गी (śṛṅgī) - Śṛṅgī; कोपसमन्वितः (kopasamanvitaḥ) - filled with anger; मृतधारम् (mṛtadhāram) - deadly curse; गुरुम् (gurum) - teacher; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; पर्यतप्यत (paryatapyata) - lamented; मन्युना (manyunā) - with wrath;]
(Thus addressed, the brilliant Śṛṅgī, filled with anger, having heard of the deadly curse on his teacher, lamented with wrath.)
Upon being addressed in this manner, the radiant Śṛṅgī, overwhelmed with anger, lamented with wrath after hearing about the deadly curse on his teacher.
स तं कृशमभिप्रेष्क्य सूनृतां वाचमुत्सृजन्। अपृच्छत कथं तातः स मेऽद्य मृतधारकः ॥१-३७-२॥
sa taṃ kṛśam abhipreṣkya sūnṛtāṃ vācam utsṛjan। apṛcchat kathaṃ tātaḥ sa me'dya mṛtadhārakaḥ ॥1-37-2॥

(He, having observed him emaciated, uttering pleasant speech, asked, "How, father, is he sustaining my life today?")
He noticed the emaciated state of the person and, speaking kindly, asked, "Father, how is he still sustaining my life today?"

rājñā parikṣitā tāta mṛgayāṃ paridhāvatā। avasaktaḥ pituste'dya mṛtaḥ skandhe bhujaṅgamaḥ ॥1-37-3॥

(By the king Parikshit, O dear, while roaming in hunting, affixed on your father's shoulder today is a dead serpent.)
O dear, today a dead serpent is affixed on your father's shoulder while King Parikshit was roaming in the hunt.
शृङ्ग्युवाच॥

किं मे पित्रा कृतं तस्य राज्ञोऽनिष्टं दुरात्मनः। ब्रूहि त्वं कृश तत्त्वेन पश्य मे तपसो बलम् ॥१-३७-४॥
kiṁ me pitrā kṛtaṁ tasya rājño'niṣṭaṁ durātmanaḥ। brūhi tvaṁ kṛśa tattvena paśya me tapaso balam ॥1-37-4॥

(What has my father done to that king, the wicked one, that is undesirable? Tell me truly, you thin one, see my strength of penance.)
What undesirable act has my father committed against that wicked king? Tell me truthfully, you thin one, and witness the strength of my penance.

स राजा मृगयां यातः परिक्षिदभिमन्युजः। ससार मृगमेकाकी विद्ध्वा बाणेन पत्रिणा ॥१-३७-५॥
sa rājā mṛgayāṃ yātaḥ parikṣidabhimanyujaḥ। sasāra mṛgamekākī viddhvā bāṇena patriṇā ॥1-37-5॥

(That king, the son of Parikshit and Abhimanyu, went hunting. Alone, he chased the deer, having pierced it with a feathered arrow.)
The king, descendant of Parikshit and Abhimanyu, went on a hunt. He pursued the deer alone and shot it with a feathered arrow.
न चापश्यन्मृगं राजा चरंस्तस्मिन्महावने। पितरं ते स दृष्ट्वैव पप्रच्छानभिभाषिणम् ॥१-३७-६॥
na cāpaśyan mṛgaṃ rājā caraṃs tasmin mahāvane। pitaraṃ te sa dṛṣṭvaiva papracchānabhibhāṣiṇam ॥1-37-6॥

(The king, wandering in that great forest, did not see a deer. Having just seen your father, he asked the silent one.)

तं स्थाणुभूतं तिष्ठन्तं क्षुत्पिपासाश्रमातुरः। पुनः पुनर्मृगं नष्टं पप्रच्छ पितरं तव ॥१-३७-७॥

(That standing still, afflicted by hunger and thirst, again and again asked your father about the lost deer.)
The one who was standing still, afflicted by hunger and thirst, repeatedly asked your father about the lost deer.
स च मौनव्रतोपेतो नैव तं प्रत्यभाषत। तस्य राजा धनुष्कोट्या सर्पं स्कन्धे समासृजत् ॥१-३७-८॥
sa ca maunavratopeto naiva taṃ pratyabhāṣata. tasya rājā dhanuṣkoṭyā sarpaṃ skandhe samāsṛjat ॥1-37-8॥

(And he, vowed to silence, indeed did not speak to him. His king placed a snake on his shoulder with the end of the bow.)
The sage, who had taken a vow of silence, did not respond to him. The king, in anger, placed a snake on the sage's shoulder using the tip of his bow.
शृङ्गिंस्तव पिताद्यासौ तथैवास्ते यतव्रतः। सोऽपि राजा स्वनगरं प्रतियातो गजाह्वयम् ॥१-३७-९॥
śṛṅgiṃstava pitādyāsau tathaivāste yatavrataḥ। so'pi rājā svanagaraṃ pratiyāto gajāhvayam ॥1-37-9॥
[शृङ्गिं (śṛṅgiṃ) - Śṛṅgin; तव (tava) - your; पिता (pitā) - father; अद्य (adya) - today; असौ (asau) - he; तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; आस्ते (āste) - remains; यतव्रतः (yatavrataḥ) - steadfast in his vow; सः (saḥ) - he; अपि (api) - also; राजा (rājā) - king; स्व (sva) - his; नगरं (nagaraṃ) - city; प्रतियातः (pratiyātaḥ) - returned; गजाह्वयम् (gajāhvayam) - to Gajāhvaya;]
(Śṛṅgin, your father, today he remains in the same way, steadfast in his vow. He, the king, also returned to his city, Gajāhvaya.)

श्रुत्वैवमृषिपुत्रस्तु दिवं स्तब्ध्वेव विष्ठितः। कोपसंरक्तनयनः प्रज्वलन्निव मन्युना ॥१-३७-१०॥
śrutvaivamṛṣiputrastu divaṃ stabdhveva viṣṭhitaḥ। kopasaṃraktanayanaḥ prajvalanniva manyunā ॥1-37-10॥
[श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; एवम् (evam) - thus; ऋषिपुत्रः (ṛṣiputraḥ) - the sage's son; तु (tu) - but; दिवम् (divam) - the sky; स्तब्ध्वा (stabdhvā) - stunned; इव (iva) - as if; विष्ठितः (viṣṭhitaḥ) - stood; कोप (kopa) - anger; संरक्त (saṃrakta) - reddened; नयनः (nayanaḥ) - eyes; प्रज्वलन् (prajvalan) - blazing; इव (iva) - as if; मन्युना (manyunā) - with wrath;]
(Having heard thus, the sage's son stood as if stunned to the sky, his eyes reddened with anger, blazing as if with wrath.)
Upon hearing this, the sage's son stood motionless, his eyes red with anger, appearing as if blazing with fury.
आविष्टः स तु कोपेन शशाप नृपतिं तदा। वार्युपस्पृश्य तेजस्वी क्रोधवेगबलात्कृतः ॥१-३७-११॥
āviṣṭaḥ sa tu kopena śaśāpa nṛpatiṃ tadā। vāryupaspṛśya tejasvī krodhavegabalātkṛtaḥ ॥1-37-11॥
[आविष्टः (āviṣṭaḥ) - overcome; स (sa) - he; तु (tu) - but; कोपेन (kopena) - with anger; शशाप (śaśāpa) - cursed; नृपतिं (nṛpatiṃ) - the king; तदा (tadā) - then; वार्युपस्पृश्य (vāryupaspṛśya) - touching water; तेजस्वी (tejasvī) - the powerful one; क्रोधवेगबलात्कृतः (krodhavegabalātkṛtaḥ) - by the force of anger;]
(Overcome, he but with anger cursed the king then. Touching water, the powerful one by the force of anger.)
Overcome by anger, he cursed the king. Then, after touching water, the powerful one acted with the force of his rage.

योऽसौ वृद्धस्य तातस्य तथा कृच्छ्रगतस्य च। स्कन्धे मृतमवास्राक्षीत्पन्नगं राजकिल्बिषी ॥१-३७-१२॥
yo'sau vṛddhasya tātasya tathā kṛcchragatasya ca। skandhe mṛtamavāsrākṣītpannagaṃ rājakilbiṣī ॥1-37-12॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; असौ (asau) - that; वृद्धस्य (vṛddhasya) - of the old; तातस्य (tātasya) - of the father; तथा (tathā) - also; कृच्छ्रगतस्य (kṛcchragatasya) - of the one in difficulty; च (ca) - and; स्कन्धे (skandhe) - on the shoulder; मृतम् (mṛtam) - dead; अवास्राक्षीत् (avāsrākṣīt) - shed tears; पन्नगम् (pannagam) - snake; राजकिल्बिषी (rājakilbiṣī) - king's sin;]
(Who, that of the old father and also of the one in difficulty, shed tears on the shoulder of the dead snake, king's sin.)
He who shed tears on the shoulder of the dead snake, which was the sin of the king, for the old father and also for the one in difficulty.
तं पापमतिसङ्क्रुद्धस्तक्षकः पन्नगोत्तमः। आशीविषस्तिग्मतेजा मद्वाक्यबलचोदितः ॥१-३७-१३॥
taṃ pāpamatisaṅkruddhastakṣakaḥ pannagottamaḥ। āśīviṣastigmatejā madvākyabalacoditaḥ ॥1-37-13॥

(Him, the evil-minded and enraged Takshaka, the best of serpents, a venomous snake fierce in energy, urged by the power of my words.)
The enraged and evil-minded Takshaka, the best among serpents, driven by the power of my words, is a fierce and venomous snake.
सप्तरात्रादितो नेता यमस्य सदनं प्रति। द्विजानामवमन्तारं कुरूणामयशस्करम् ॥१-३७-१४॥
saptarātrādito netā yamasya sadanaṃ prati। dvijānāmavamantāraṃ kurūṇāmayaśaskaram ॥1-37-14॥
[सप्त (sapta) - seven; रात्रात् (rātrāt) - nights; इतः (itaḥ) - from now; नेता (netā) - leader; यमस्य (yamasya) - of Yama; सदनं (sadanaṃ) - abode; प्रति (prati) - towards; द्विजानाम् (dvijānām) - of the twice-born; अवमन्तारं (avamantāraṃ) - insulter; कुरूणाम् (kurūṇām) - of the Kurus; अयशस्करम् (ayaśaskaram) - disgraceful;]
(Seven nights from now, the leader will go towards the abode of Yama, the insulter of the twice-born, disgraceful to the Kurus.)
In seven days, the leader will head towards Yama's abode, bringing disgrace to the Kurus by insulting the twice-born.

iti śaptvā nṛpaṃ kruddhaḥ śṛṅgī pitaramabhyayāt। āsīnaṃ gocare tasminvahantaṃ śavapannagam ॥1-37-15॥
[इति (iti) - thus; शप्त्वा (śaptvā) - having cursed; नृपं (nṛpaṃ) - the king; क्रुद्धः (kruddhaḥ) - angry; शृङ्गी (śṛṅgī) - Śṛṅgī; पितरम् (pitaram) - to the father; अभ्ययात् (abhyayāt) - approached; आसीनं (āsīnaṃ) - sitting; गोचरे (gocare) - in the pasture; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - there; वहन्तं (vahantaṃ) - carrying; शवपन्नगम् (śavapannagam) - a dead snake;]
(Thus, having cursed the king, the angry Śṛṅgī approached his father, who was sitting there in the pasture, carrying a dead snake.)
After cursing the king, the enraged Śṛṅgī went to his father, who was seated in the pasture, holding a dead snake.
स तमालक्ष्य पितरं शृङ्गी स्कन्धगतेन वै। शवेन भुजगेनासीद्भूयः क्रोधसमन्वितः ॥१-३७-१६॥
sa tam ākṣya pitaraṃ śṛṅgī skandhagtena vai। śavena bhujagenāsīdbhūyaḥ krodhasamanvitaḥ ॥1-37-16॥

(He, seeing his father Śṛṅgī with a corpse and a snake on the shoulder, indeed became again filled with anger.)
Śṛṅgī, upon seeing his father with a corpse and a snake on his shoulder, was once again filled with intense anger.
दुःखाच्चाश्रूणि मुमुचे पितरं चेदमब्रवीत्। श्रुत्वेमां धर्षणां तात तव तेन दुरात्मना ॥१-३७-१७॥
duḥkhāccāśrūṇi mumuce pitaraṃ cedamabravīt. śrutvemāṃ dharṣaṇāṃ tāta tava tena durātmanā ॥1-37-17॥

(From sorrow and tears released, to father this said. Having heard this outrage, father, your by that wicked soul.)
Overcome with sorrow, she released tears and said to her father: "Having heard of this outrage committed by that wicked soul against you, father."
राज्ञा परिक्षिता कोपादशपं तमहं नृपम्। यथार्हति स एवोग्रं शापं कुरुकुलाधमः ॥१-३७-१८॥
rājñā parikṣitā kopādaśapaṃ tamahaṃ nṛpam। yathārhati sa evograṃ śāpaṃ kurukulādhamaḥ ॥1-37-18॥

(By the king Parikshit, out of anger, I cursed him, the king, as he deserves. He indeed deserves a severe curse, the disgrace of the Kuru dynasty.)

(On the seventh day, that sinful Takshaka, the best of serpents, the leader of Vaivasvata's abode, extremely terrible.)
On the seventh day, the dreadful serpent Takshaka, known as the best among serpents, led the way to the abode of Vaivasvata, bringing great terror.
तमब्रवीत्पिता ब्रह्मंस्तथा कोपसमन्वितम्। न मे प्रियं कृतं तात नैष धर्मस्तपस्विनाम् ॥१-३७-२०॥
tam abravīt pitā brahman tathā kopasamanvitam। na me priyaṃ kṛtaṃ tāta naiṣa dharmas tapasvinām ॥1-37-20॥

(The father said to him, O Brahman, thus filled with anger: "Dear, what you have done is not pleasing to me; this is not the duty of ascetics.")
