गतमात्रं तु भर्तारं जरत्कारुरवेदयत्। भ्रातुस्त्वरितमागम्य यथातथ्यं तपोधन ॥१-४४-१॥
gatamātraṃ tu bhartāraṃ jaratkāruravedayat। bhrātustvaritamāgamya yathātathyaṃ tapodhana ॥1-44-1॥
[गतमात्रं (gatamātraṃ) - just gone; तु (tu) - but; भर्तारं (bhartāraṃ) - husband; जरत्कारुः (jaratkāruḥ) - Jaratkaru; अवेदयत् (avedayat) - informed; भ्रातुः (bhrātuḥ) - brother; त्वरितम् (tvaritam) - quickly; आगम्य (āgamya) - having arrived; यथातथ्यम् (yathātathyam) - as it is; तपोधन (tapodhana) - O sage;]
(Jaratkaru informed the husband who had just gone. Having quickly arrived, O sage, to the brother, as it is.)
Jaratkaru informed her husband who had just left. She quickly went to her brother and told him everything as it was, O sage.
ततः स भुजगश्रेष्ठः श्रुत्वा सुमहदप्रियम्। उवाच भगिनीं दीनां तदा दीनतरः स्वयम् ॥१-४४-२॥
tataḥ sa bhujagaśreṣṭhaḥ śrutvā sumahadapriyam। uvāca bhaginīṃ dīnāṃ tadā dīnatarḥ svayam ॥1-44-2॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; स (sa) - he; भुजगश्रेष्ठः (bhujagaśreṣṭhaḥ) - the best of serpents; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; सुमहदप्रियम् (sumahadapriyam) - very unpleasant; उवाच (uvāca) - said; भगिनीं (bhaginīṃ) - to the sister; दीनां (dīnāṃ) - distressed; तदा (tadā) - then; दीनतरः (dīnatarḥ) - more distressed; स्वयम् (svayam) - himself;]
(Then he, the best of serpents, having heard the very unpleasant news, said to his distressed sister, himself more distressed.)
Then, the chief of serpents, upon hearing the grievous news, spoke to his sorrowful sister, feeling even more sorrowful himself.
जानासि भद्रे यत्कार्यं प्रदाने कारणं च यत्। पन्नगानां हितार्थाय पुत्रस्ते स्यात्ततो यदि ॥१-४४-३॥
jānāsi bhadre yat kāryaṃ pradāne kāraṇaṃ ca yat। pannagānāṃ hitārthāya putras te syāt tato yadi ॥1-44-3॥
[जानासि (jānāsi) - you know; भद्रे (bhadre) - O auspicious one; यत् (yat) - what; कार्यं (kāryaṃ) - duty; प्रदाने (pradāne) - in giving; कारणं (kāraṇaṃ) - reason; च (ca) - and; यत् (yat) - what; पन्नगानां (pannagānāṃ) - of the serpents; हितार्थाय (hitārthāya) - for the welfare; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; ते (te) - your; स्यात् (syāt) - may be; ततः (tataḥ) - then; यदि (yadi) - if;]
(You know, O auspicious one, what duty and reason there is in giving. If your son may be for the welfare of the serpents, then.)
O auspicious one, you know what duty and reason lie in giving. If your son can be for the welfare of the serpents, then it should be so.
स सर्पसत्रात्किल नो मोक्षयिष्यति वीर्यवान्। एवं पितामहः पूर्वमुक्तवान्मां सुरैः सह ॥१-४४-४॥
sa sarpasatrātkila no mokṣayiṣyati vīryavān। evaṃ pitāmahaḥ pūrvamuktavānmāṃ suraiḥ saha ॥1-44-4॥
[स (sa) - he; सर्पसत्रात् (sarpasatrāt) - from the snake sacrifice; किल (kila) - indeed; नः (naḥ) - us; मोक्षयिष्यति (mokṣayiṣyati) - will liberate; वीर्यवान् (vīryavān) - the powerful one; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; पितामहः (pitāmahaḥ) - the grandfather; पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - before; उक्तवान् (uktavān) - said; माम् (mām) - to me; सुरैः (suraiḥ) - with the gods; सह (saha) - together;]
(He, the powerful one, will indeed liberate us from the snake sacrifice. Thus, the grandfather had said to me before, together with the gods.)
The powerful one will indeed save us from the snake sacrifice. This is what the grandfather had told me earlier, along with the gods.
अप्यस्ति गर्भः सुभगे तस्मात्ते मुनिसत्तमात्। न चेच्छाम्यफलं तस्य दारकर्म मनीषिणः ॥१-४४-५॥
apyasti garbhaḥ subhage tasmātte munisattamāt। na cecchāmyaphalaṃ tasya dārakarma manīṣiṇaḥ ॥1-44-5॥
[अपि (api) - whether; अस्ति (asti) - is; गर्भः (garbhaḥ) - pregnancy; सुभगे (subhage) - fortunate one; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; ते (te) - your; मुनिसत्तमात् (munisattamāt) - from the best of sages; न (na) - not; चेत् (cet) - if; शामि (śāmi) - I wish; अफलम् (aphalam) - fruitless; तस्य (tasya) - his; दारकर्म (dārakarma) - marital duty; मनीषिणः (manīṣiṇaḥ) - of the wise one;]
(Whether there is pregnancy, O fortunate one, therefore from the best of sages to you; if not, I wish his marital duty to be fruitless, of the wise one.)
O fortunate one, do you have a pregnancy from the best of sages? If not, I wish that the wise one's marital efforts remain fruitless.
कामं च मम न न्याय्यं प्रष्टुं त्वां कार्यमीदृशम्। किं तु कार्यगरीयस्त्वात्ततस्त्वाहमचूचुदम् ॥१-४४-६॥
kāmaṃ ca mama na nyāyyaṃ praṣṭuṃ tvāṃ kāryamīdṛśam. kiṃ tu kāryagarīyastvāttatastvāhamacūcudam ॥1-44-6॥
[कामं (kāmaṃ) - desire; च (ca) - and; मम (mama) - my; न (na) - not; न्याय्यं (nyāyyaṃ) - proper; प्रष्टुं (praṣṭuṃ) - to ask; त्वां (tvāṃ) - you; कार्यं (kāryam) - task; ईदृशम् (īdṛśam) - such; किं (kiṃ) - but; तु (tu) - however; कार्यगरीयस्त्वात् (kāryagarīyastvāt) - due to the importance of the task; ततः (tataḥ) - therefore; त्वा (tvā) - you; अहम् (aham) - I; अचूचुदम् (acūcudam) - asked;]
(Desire and my not proper to ask you task such. But however due to the importance of the task therefore you I asked.)
Although it is not proper for me to ask you such a task, due to the importance of the task, I have asked you.
दुर्वासतां विदित्वा च भर्तुस्तेऽतितपस्विनः। नैनमन्वागमिष्यामि कदाचिद्धि शपेत्स माम् ॥१-४४-७॥
durvāsatāṃ viditvā ca bhartuste'titapasvinaḥ। nainamanvāgamiṣyāmi kadāciddhi śapetsa mām ॥1-44-7॥
[दुर्वासताम् (durvāsatām) - anger; विदित्वा (viditvā) - knowing; च (ca) - and; भर्तुः (bhartuḥ) - of husband; ते (te) - your; अतितपस्विनः (atitapasvinaḥ) - great ascetic; न (na) - not; एनम् (enam) - him; अन्वागमिष्यामि (anvāgamiṣyāmi) - will follow; कदाचित् (kadācit) - ever; हि (hi) - indeed; शपेत् (śapet) - curse; स (sa) - he; माम् (mām) - me;]
(Knowing the anger of your husband, the great ascetic, I will not follow him, for he might indeed curse me.)
Understanding the wrath of your husband, the great ascetic, I shall not accompany him, as he might curse me at some point.
आचक्ष्व भद्रे भर्तुस्त्वं सर्वमेव विचेष्टितम्। शल्यमुद्धर मे घोरं भद्रे हृदि चिरस्थितम् ॥१-४४-८॥
ācakṣva bhadre bhartustvaṃ sarvameva viceṣṭitam। śalyamuddhara me ghoraṃ bhadre hṛdi cirasthitam ॥1-44-8॥
[आचक्ष्व (ācakṣva) - tell; भद्रे (bhadre) - O gentle lady; भर्तुः (bhartuḥ) - of the husband; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; सर्वम् (sarvam) - everything; एव (eva) - indeed; विचेष्टितम् (viceṣṭitam) - activities; शल्यम् (śalyam) - thorn; उद्धर (uddhara) - remove; मे (me) - my; घोरम् (ghoram) - terrible; भद्रे (bhadre) - O gentle lady; हृदि (hṛdi) - in the heart; चिरस्थितम् (cirasthitam) - long-standing;]
(Tell, O gentle lady, of the husband's activities indeed. Remove the terrible thorn from my heart, O gentle lady, which has been long-standing.)
O gentle lady, please recount all the activities of your husband. Kindly remove the terrible thorn that has long resided in my heart, dear lady.
जरत्कारुस्ततो वाक्यमित्युक्ता प्रत्यभाषत। आश्वासयन्ती सन्तप्तं वासुकिं पन्नगेश्वरम् ॥१-४४-९॥
jaratkārustato vākyamityuktā pratyabhāṣata. āśvāsayantī santaptaṃ vāsukiṃ pannageśvaram ॥1-44-9॥
[जरत्कारुः (jaratkāruḥ) - Jaratkaru; ततः (tataḥ) - then; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - speech; इति (iti) - thus; उक्ता (uktā) - spoken; प्रत्यभाषत (pratyabhāṣata) - replied; आश्वासयन्ती (āśvāsayantī) - comforting; सन्तप्तम् (santaptam) - distressed; वासुकिम् (vāsukim) - Vasuki; पन्नगेश्वरम् (pannageśvaram) - lord of serpents;]
(Jaratkaru then replied with the speech thus spoken, comforting the distressed Vasuki, the lord of serpents.)
Jaratkaru, having been spoken to, replied to Vasuki, the lord of serpents, offering comfort to the distressed.
पृष्टो मयापत्यहेतोः स महात्मा महातपाः। अस्तीत्युदरमुद्दिश्य ममेदं गतवांश्च सः ॥१-४४-१०॥
pṛṣṭo mayāpatyahetoḥ sa mahātmā mahātapāḥ। astītyudaramuddiśya mamedaṃ gatavāṃśca saḥ ॥1-44-10॥
[पृष्टः (pṛṣṭaḥ) - asked; मया (mayā) - by me; अपत्यहेतोः (apatyahetoḥ) - for the sake of offspring; सः (saḥ) - he; महात्मा (mahātmā) - great soul; महातपाः (mahātapāḥ) - great ascetic; अस्ति (asti) - exists; इति (iti) - thus; उदरम् (udaram) - stomach; उद्दिश्य (uddiśya) - pointing to; मम (mama) - my; इदं (idam) - this; गतवान् (gatavān) - went; च (ca) - and; सः (saḥ) - he;]
(Asked by me for the sake of offspring, he, the great soul and great ascetic, pointing to my stomach, said 'it exists' and went.)
When I asked the great soul and ascetic for the sake of offspring, he pointed to my stomach and affirmed its existence before departing.
स्वैरेष्वपि न तेनाहं स्मरामि वितथं क्वचित्। उक्तपूर्वं कुतो राजन्साम्पराये स वक्ष्यति ॥१-४४-११॥
svaireṣvapi na tenāhaṃ smarāmi vitathaṃ kvacit। uktapūrvaṃ kuto rājansāmparāye sa vakṣyati ॥1-44-11॥
[स्वैरेषु (svaireṣu) - in freedoms; अपि (api) - even; न (na) - not; तेन (tena) - by him; अहम् (aham) - I; स्मरामि (smarāmi) - remember; वितथम् (vitatham) - false; क्वचित् (kvacit) - anywhere; उक्तपूर्वम् (uktapūrvam) - previously said; कुतः (kutaḥ) - how; राजन् (rājan) - O king; साम्पराये (sāmparāye) - in future; सः (saḥ) - he; वक्ष्यति (vakṣyati) - will say;]
(Even in freedoms, I do not remember anything false by him anywhere. How will he say anything previously said, O king, in future?)
O king, even in times of freedom, I have never known him to speak falsely. How then will he speak untruths in the future?
न सन्तापस्त्वया कार्यः कार्यं प्रति भुजङ्गमे। उत्पत्स्यति हि ते पुत्रो ज्वलनार्कसमद्युतिः ॥१-४४-१२॥
na santāpastvayā kāryaḥ kāryaṃ prati bhujaṅgame। utpatsyati hi te putro jvalanārkasamadyutiḥ ॥1-44-12॥
[न (na) - not; सन्तापः (santāpaḥ) - grief; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; कार्यः (kāryaḥ) - should be done; कार्यं (kāryaṃ) - action; प्रति (prati) - towards; भुजङ्गमे (bhujaṅgame) - O serpent; उत्पत्स्यति (utpatsyati) - will be born; हि (hi) - indeed; ते (te) - your; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; ज्वलन (jvalana) - fire; अर्क (arka) - sun; सम (sama) - equal; द्युतिः (dyutiḥ) - splendor;]
(No grief should be done by you towards the action, O serpent. Indeed, your son will be born with splendor equal to fire and sun.)
Do not grieve over the matter, O serpent. Your son will indeed be born with a splendor equal to that of fire and the sun.
इत्युक्त्वा हि स मां भ्रातर्गतो भर्ता तपोवनम्। तस्माद्व्येतु परं दुःखं तवेदं मनसि स्थितम् ॥१-४४-१३॥
ityuktvā hi sa māṃ bhrātargato bhartā tapovanam। tasmādvyetu paraṃ duḥkhaṃ tavedaṃ manasi sthitam ॥1-44-13॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; हि (hi) - indeed; स (sa) - he; माम् (mām) - me; भ्रातर् (bhrātar) - brother; गतः (gataḥ) - went; भर्ता (bhartā) - husband; तपोवनम् (tapovanam) - forest of penance; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; व्येतु (vyetu) - let go; परम् (param) - supreme; दुःखम् (duḥkham) - sorrow; तव (tava) - your; इदम् (idam) - this; मनसि (manasi) - in mind; स्थितम् (sthitam) - situated;]
(Thus, having spoken, indeed, he, my brother, the husband, went to the forest of penance. Therefore, let this supreme sorrow situated in your mind go.)
Thus, my brother, having spoken, went to the forest of penance. Therefore, let go of this great sorrow that resides in your mind.
एतच्छ्रुत्वा स नागेन्द्रो वासुकिः परया मुदा। एवमस्त्विति तद्वाक्यं भगिन्याः प्रत्यगृह्णत ॥१-४४-१४॥
etacchrutvā sa nāgendro vāsukiḥ parayā mudā। evamastviti tadvākyaṃ bhaginyāḥ pratyagṛhṇata ॥1-44-14॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; सः (saḥ) - he; नागेन्द्रः (nāgendraḥ) - king of serpents; वासुकिः (vāsukiḥ) - Vāsuki; परया (parayā) - with great; मुदा (mudā) - joy; एवम् (evam) - thus; अस्तु (astu) - be it; इति (iti) - thus; तत् (tat) - that; वाक्यम् (vākyaṃ) - speech; भगिन्याः (bhaginyāḥ) - of sister; प्रत्यगृह्णत (pratyagṛhṇata) - accepted;]
(Having heard this, the king of serpents, Vāsuki, with great joy, accepted that speech of his sister, saying, "Be it thus.")
Upon hearing this, Vāsuki, the king of serpents, joyfully accepted his sister's words, agreeing to them by saying, "So be it."
सान्त्वमानार्थदानैश्च पूजया चानुरूपया। सोदर्यां पूजयामास स्वसारं पन्नगोत्तमः ॥१-४४-१५॥
sāntvamānārthadānaiśca pūjayā cānurūpayā। sodaryāṃ pūjayāmāsa svasāraṃ pannagottamaḥ ॥1-44-15॥
[सान्त्व (sāntva) - consolation; मान (māna) - respect; अर्थदानैः (arthadānaiḥ) - gifts; च (ca) - and; पूजया (pūjayā) - with honor; चानुरूपया (cānurūpayā) - and appropriately; सोधर्यां (sodaryāṃ) - sister; पूजयामास (pūjayāmāsa) - honored; स्वसारं (svasāraṃ) - sister; पन्नगोत्तमः (pannagottamaḥ) - the best of serpents;]
(The best of serpents honored his sister with consolation, respect, gifts, and appropriate honor.)
The best of serpents, with due respect and gifts, honored his sister appropriately.
ततः स ववृधे गर्भो महातेजा रविप्रभः। यथा सोमो द्विजश्रेष्ठ शुक्लपक्षोदितो दिवि ॥१-४४-१६॥
tataḥ sa vavṛdhe garbho mahātejā raviprabhaḥ। yathā somo dvijaśreṣṭha śuklapakṣodito divi ॥1-44-16॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; सः (saḥ) - he; ववृधे (vavṛdhe) - grew; गर्भः (garbhaḥ) - embryo; महातेजाः (mahātejāḥ) - greatly radiant; रविप्रभः (raviprabhaḥ) - sun-like; यथा (yathā) - as; सः (saḥ) - he; सोमः (somaḥ) - moon; द्विजश्रेष्ठ (dvijaśreṣṭha) - O best of the twice-born; शुक्लपक्षोदितः (śuklapakṣoditaḥ) - waxing phase arisen; दिवि (divi) - in the sky;]
(Then the embryo grew, greatly radiant and sun-like, as the moon, O best of the twice-born, arises in the waxing phase in the sky.)
Then the embryo grew with great radiance, shining like the sun, just as the moon rises in the sky during the waxing phase, O best of the twice-born.
यथाकालं तु सा ब्रह्मन्प्रजज्ञे भुजगस्वसा। कुमारं देवगर्भाभं पितृमातृभयापहम् ॥१-४४-१७॥
yathākālaṃ tu sā brahmanprajajñe bhujagasvasā। kumāraṃ devagarbhābhaṃ pitṛmātṛbhayāpaham ॥1-44-17॥
[यथाकालं (yathākālam) - at the right time; तु (tu) - but; सा (sā) - she; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brahman; प्रजज्ञे (prajajñe) - gave birth; भुजगस्वसा (bhujagasvasā) - sister of the serpent; कुमारं (kumāram) - a boy; देवगर्भाभं (devagarbhābham) - like a divine embryo; पितृमातृभयापहम् (pitṛmātṛbhayāpaham) - remover of parents' fear;]
(At the right time, but she, O Brahman, gave birth to the sister of the serpent, a boy like a divine embryo, remover of parents' fear.)

ववृधे स च तत्रैव नागराजनिवेशने। वेदांश्चाधिजगे साङ्गान्भार्गवाच्च्यवनात्मजात् ॥१-४४-१८॥
vavṛdhe sa ca tatraiva nāgarājaniveśane। vedāṃścādhijage sāṅgānbhārgavāccyavanātmajāt ॥1-44-18॥
[ववृधे (vavṛdhe) - grew; स (sa) - he; च (ca) - and; तत्रैव (tatraiva) - there itself; नागराजनिवेशने (nāgarājaniveśane) - in the abode of the serpent king; वेदान् (vedān) - Vedas; च (ca) - and; अधिजगे (adhijage) - mastered; साङ्गान् (sāṅgān) - with limbs; भार्गवात् (bhārgavāt) - from Bhārgava; च्यवनात्मजात् (cyavanātmajāt) - from the son of Cyavana;]
(He grew there itself in the abode of the serpent king and mastered the Vedas with limbs from Bhārgava, the son of Cyavana.)
He grew up right there in the abode of the serpent king and learned the Vedas along with its branches from Bhārgava, the son of Cyavana.
चरितव्रतो बाल एव बुद्धिसत्त्वगुणान्वितः। नाम चास्याभवत्ख्यातं लोकेष्वास्तीक इत्युत ॥१-४४-१९॥
caritavrato bāla eva buddhisattvaguṇānvitaḥ। nāma cāsyābhavatkhyātaṃ lokeṣvāstīka ityuta ॥1-44-19॥
[चरितव्रतः (caritavrataḥ) - one who has observed vows; बालः (bālaḥ) - young; एव (eva) - indeed; बुद्धिसत्त्वगुणान्वितः (buddhisattvaguṇānvitaḥ) - endowed with intelligence and virtue; नाम (nāma) - name; च (ca) - and; अस्य (asya) - his; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; ख्यातं (khyātaṃ) - famous; लोकेषु (lokeṣu) - in the worlds; आस्तीकः (āstīkaḥ) - Āstīka; इति (iti) - thus; उत (uta) - indeed;]
(One who has observed vows, young indeed, endowed with intelligence and virtue, his name became famous in the worlds as Āstīka, thus indeed.)
Even as a young boy, he was known for observing vows and was endowed with intelligence and virtue. His name became famous in the world as Āstīka.
अस्तीत्युक्त्वा गतो यस्मात्पिता गर्भस्थमेव तम्। वनं तस्मादिदं तस्य नामास्तीकेति विश्रुतम् ॥१-४४-२०॥
astītyuktvā gato yasmātpitā garbhasthameva tam. vanaṃ tasmādidaṃ tasya nāmāstīketi viśrutam ॥1-44-20॥
[अस्ति (asti) - exists; इति (iti) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having said; गतः (gataḥ) - went; यः (yaḥ) - who; स्मात् (smāt) - from; पिता (pitā) - father; गर्भस्थम् (garbhastham) - in the womb; एव (eva) - only; तम् (tam) - him; वनम् (vanam) - forest; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; इदम् (idam) - this; तस्य (tasya) - his; नाम (nāma) - name; आस्तीक (āstīka) - Āstīka; इति (iti) - thus; विश्रुतम् (viśrutam) - known;]
(Having said 'asti' (exists), the father went to the forest, leaving him in the womb. Therefore, his name is known as Āstīka.)
The father, having declared 'asti' (exists), went to the forest while the child was still in the womb. Hence, he is famously known as Āstīka.
स बाल एव तत्रस्थश्चरन्नमितबुद्धिमान्। गृहे पन्नगराजस्य प्रयत्नात्पर्यरक्ष्यत ॥१-४४-२१॥
sa bāla eva tatrasthaścarannamitabuddhimān। gṛhe pannagarājasya prayatnātparyarakṣyata ॥1-44-21॥
[स (sa) - he; बाल (bāla) - young; एव (eva) - indeed; तत्रस्थः (tatrasthaḥ) - situated there; चरन् (caran) - moving; अमितबुद्धिमान् (amitabuddhimān) - of immeasurable intelligence; गृहे (gṛhe) - in the house; पन्नगराजस्य (pannagarājasya) - of the king of serpents; प्रयत्नात् (prayatnāt) - with effort; पर्यरक्ष्यत (paryarakṣyata) - was protected;]
(He, indeed young, situated there, moving, of immeasurable intelligence, was protected with effort in the house of the king of serpents.)
The young boy, possessing immeasurable intelligence, was carefully protected in the house of the serpent king.
भगवानिव देवेशः शूलपाणिर्हिरण्यदः। विवर्धमानः सर्वांस्तान्पन्नगानभ्यहर्षयत् ॥१-४४-२२॥
bhagavān iva deveśaḥ śūlapāṇir hiraṇyadaḥ। vivardhamānaḥ sarvān tān pannagān abhyaharṣayat ॥1-44-22॥

(The blessed one, like the lord of the gods, the trident-holder, the gold-giver, growing, delighted all those serpents.)
The revered one, resembling the lord of the gods and bearer of the trident, who bestows gold, joyously uplifted all the serpents.
