vāsukistvabravīdvākyaṃ jaratkārumṛṣiṃ tadā। sanāmā tava kanyeyaṃ svasā me tapasānvitā ॥1-43-1॥

(Vasuki indeed said words to the sage Jaratkaru then. Named your daughter, this is my sister, endowed by penance.)
Vasuki then spoke to the sage Jaratkaru, saying, 'This girl, who is named, is your daughter and my sister, endowed with penance.'
भरिष्यामि च ते भार्यां प्रतीच्छेमां द्विजोत्तम। रक्षणं च करिष्येऽस्याः सर्वशक्त्या तपोधन ॥१-४३-२॥
bhariṣyāmi ca te bhāryāṃ pratīcchemāṃ dvijottama। rakṣaṇaṃ ca kariṣye'syāḥ sarvaśaktyā tapodhana ॥1-43-2॥

प्रतिश्रुते तु नागेन भरिष्ये भगिनीमिति। जरत्कारुस्तदा वेश्म भुजगस्य जगाम ह ॥१-४३-३॥

तत्र मन्त्रविदां श्रेष्ठस्तपोवृद्धो महाव्रतः। जग्राह पाणिं धर्मात्मा विधिमन्त्रपुरस्कृतम् ॥१-४३-४॥
tatra mantravidāṃ śreṣṭhastapovṛddho mahāvrataḥ। jagrāha pāṇiṃ dharmātmā vidhimantrapuraskṛtam ॥1-43-4॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; मन्त्रविदां (mantravidāṃ) - of the knowers of mantras; श्रेष्ठः (śreṣṭhaḥ) - the best; तपोवृद्धः (tapovṛddhaḥ) - grown in austerity; महाव्रतः (mahāvrataḥ) - great vow; जग्राह (jagrāha) - took; पाणिम् (pāṇim) - hand; धर्मात्मा (dharmātmā) - righteous soul; विधिमन्त्रपुरस्कृतम् (vidhimantrapuraskṛtam) - preceded by sacred rites;]
(There, the best among the knowers of mantras, grown in austerity and of great vow, the righteous soul took the hand, preceded by sacred rites.)
There, the noble sage, esteemed among those who know mantras, matured in his ascetic practices and committed to great vows, righteously took the hand in marriage, following the sacred rituals.
ततो वासगृहं शुभ्रं पन्नगेन्द्रस्य संमतम्। जगाम भार्यामादाय स्तूयमानो महर्षिभिः ॥१-४३-५॥
tato vāsagṛhaṃ śubhraṃ pannagendrasya saṃmatam। jagāma bhāryāmādāya stūyamāno maharṣibhiḥ ॥1-43-5॥

(The bed was indeed arranged there, enclosed with a competitive covering. There, with his wife as a companion, Jaratkaru indeed dwelt.)

स तत्र समयं चक्रे भार्यया सह सत्तमः। विप्रियं मे न कर्तव्यं न च वाच्यं कदाचन ॥१-४३-७॥
sa tatra samayaṁ cakre bhāryayā saha sattamaḥ। vipriyaṁ me na kartavyaṁ na ca vācyaṁ kadācana ॥1-43-7॥

(He, the noble one, made an agreement there with his wife: "Nothing unpleasant should be done or spoken to me ever.")

त्यजेयमप्रिये हि त्वां कृते वासं च ते गृहे। एतद्गृहाण वचनं मया यत्समुदीरितम् ॥१-४३-८॥
tyajeyamapriye hi tvāṃ kṛte vāsaṃ ca te gṛhe| etadgṛhāṇa vacanaṃ mayā yatsamudīritam ॥1-43-8॥

ततः परमसंविग्ना स्वसा नागपतेस्तु सा। अतिदुःखान्विता वाचं तमुवाचैवमस्त्विति ॥१-४३-९॥
tataḥ paramasaṁvignā svasā nāgapates tu sā। atiduḥkhānvitā vācaṁ tam uvācāivam astv iti ॥1-43-9॥

(Then, greatly agitated, the sister of the lord of serpents, overwhelmed with grief, said these words to him, "Let it be thus.")

तथैव सा च भर्तारं दुःखशीलमुपाचरत्। उपायैः श्वेतकाकीयैः प्रियकामा यशस्विनी ॥१-४३-१०॥
tathaiva sā ca bhartāraṃ duḥkhaśīlamupācarat। upāyaiḥ śvetakākīyaiḥ priyakāmā yaśasvinī ॥1-43-10॥

ऋतुकाले ततः स्नाता कदाचिद्वासुकेः स्वसा। भर्तारं तं यथान्यायमुपतस्थे महामुनिम् ॥१-४३-११॥
ṛtukāle tataḥ snātā kadācidvāsukeḥ svasā। bhartāraṃ taṃ yathānyāyamupatasthe mahāmunim ॥1-43-11॥

तत्र तस्याः समभवद्गर्भो ज्वलनसंनिभः। अतीव तपसा युक्तो वैश्वानरसमद्युतिः ॥ शुक्लपक्षे यथा सोमो व्यवर्धत तथैव सः ॥१-४३-१२॥
tatra tasyāḥ samabhavadgarbho jvalanasaṃnibhaḥ। atīva tapasā yukto vaiśvānarasamadyutiḥ ॥ śuklapakṣe yathā somo vyavardhata tathaiva saḥ ॥1-43-12॥

(There, her embryo was born like fire, extremely endowed with penance, equal in brilliance to Agni. In the bright fortnight, as the moon grew, so did he.)

(Then, after a few days, Jaratkaru, the great ascetic, having placed his head in her lap, slept as if exhausted.)

तस्मिंश्च सुप्ते विप्रेन्द्रे सवितास्तमियाद्गिरिम्। अह्नः परिक्षये ब्रह्मंस्ततः साचिन्तयत्तदा ॥ वासुकेर्भगिनी भीता धर्मलोपान्मनस्विनी ॥१-४३-१४॥
tasmiṁśca supte viprendre savitāstamiyādgirim। ahnaḥ parikṣaye brahmaṁstataḥ sācintayattadā ॥ vāsukerbhaginī bhītā dharmalopānmanasvinī ॥1-43-14॥

(In that place, when the best of the Brahmins was asleep, the sun set behind the mountain. At the end of the day, O Brahmin, then she thought at that time, the sister of Vasuki, afraid of the loss of dharma, the wise one.)

किं नु मे सुकृतं भूयाद्भर्तुरुत्थापनं न वा। दुःखशीलो हि धर्मात्मा कथं नास्यापराध्नुयाम् ॥१-४३-१५॥

(What indeed is my good deed, may it be the raising of the husband or not. How would I not offend this sorrowful by nature, righteous soul?)

(I will raise him if he certainly will do anger. Loss of dharma would be his certainly in transgressing twilight.)

इति निश्चित्य मनसा जरत्कारुर्भुजङ्गमा। तमृषिं दीप्ततपसं शयानमनलोपमम् ॥ उवाचेदं वचः श्लक्ष्णं ततो मधुरभाषिणी ॥१-४३-१८॥
iti niścitya manasā jaratkārurbhujaṅgamā. tamṛṣiṃ dīptatapasaṃ śayānamanalopamam .. uvācedaṃ vacaḥ ślakṣṇaṃ tato madhurabhāṣiṇī ..1-43-18..
[इति (iti) - thus; निश्चित्य (niścitya) - having decided; मनसा (manasā) - with mind; जरत्कारुः (jaratkāruḥ) - Jaratkaru; भुजङ्गमा (bhujaṅgamā) - serpent; तम् (tam) - that; ऋषिं (ṛṣiṃ) - sage; दीप्ततपसं (dīptatapasaṃ) - with blazing penance; शयानम् (śayānam) - lying; अनलोपमम् (analopamam) - like fire; उवाच (uvāca) - said; इदं (idaṃ) - this; वचः (vacaḥ) - words; श्लक्ष्णं (ślakṣṇaṃ) - gentle; ततः (tataḥ) - then; मधुरभाषिणी (madhurabhāṣiṇī) - sweet-speaking;]
(Thus, having decided with mind, Jaratkaru, the serpent, said these gentle words to the sage with blazing penance, lying like fire, then sweet-speaking.)

uttiṣṭha tvaṃ mahābhāga sūryo'stamupagacchati| sandhyāmupāssva bhagavannapaḥ spṛṣṭvā yatavrataḥ ॥1-43-19॥

(Arise, you great one, the sun approaches setting. Worship the twilight, O revered one, having touched water, steadfast in vows.)

प्रादुष्कृताग्निहोत्रोऽयं मुहूर्तो रम्यदारुणः। सन्ध्या प्रवर्तते चेयं पश्चिमायां दिशि प्रभो ॥१-४३-२०॥
prāduṣkṛtāgnihotro'yaṃ muhūrto ramyadāruṇaḥ। sandhyā pravartate ceyaṃ paścimāyāṃ diśi prabho ॥1-43-20॥

एवमुक्तः स भगवाञ्जरत्कारुर्महातपाः। भार्यां प्रस्फुरमाणोष्ठ इदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥१-४३-२१॥
evamuktaḥ sa bhagavāñjaratkārurmahātapāḥ। bhāryāṃ prasphuramaṇoṣṭha idaṃ vacanamabravīt ॥1-43-21॥

सुखमस्म्युषितो भद्रे ब्रूयास्त्वं भ्रातरं शुभे। इतो मयि गते भीरु गतः स भगवानिति ॥ त्वं चापि मयि निष्क्रान्ते न शोकं कर्तुमर्हसि ॥१-४३-२९॥

मातृशापाभिभूतानां ज्ञातीनां मम सत्तम। अपत्यमीप्षितं त्वत्तस्तच्च तावन्न दृश्यते ॥१-४३-३४॥

After speaking thus, the righteous sage Jaratkaru, with firm determination, went again to perform intense penance.
