ततः स राजा राजेन्द्र स्कन्धे तस्य भुजङ्गमम्। मुनेः क्षुत्क्षाम आसज्य स्वपुरं पुनराययौ ॥१-४६-१॥
tataḥ sa rājā rājendra skandhe tasya bhujaṅgamam। muneḥ kṣutkṣāma āsajya svapuraṃ punarāyayau ॥1-46-1॥

(Then he, the king, O lord of kings, placing the serpent of the sage emaciated by hunger on his shoulder, returned again to his city.)

(Of the sage, his son was born in a cow, greatly renowned, named Śṛṅgī, of great energy, sharp prowess, very irritable.)

ब्रह्माणं सोऽभ्युपागम्य मुनिः पूजां चकार ह। अनुज्ञातो गतस्तत्र शृङ्गी शुश्राव तं तदा ॥ सख्युः सकाशात्पितरं पित्रा ते धर्षितं तथा ॥१-४६-३॥

मृतं सर्पं समासक्तं पित्रा ते जनमेजय। वहन्तं कुरुशार्दूल स्कन्धेनानपकारिणम् ॥१-४६-४॥

(O Janamejaya, your father carried a dead snake on his shoulder, O best of the Kurus, without any harm.)

तपस्विनमतीवाथ तं मुनिप्रवरं नृप। जितेन्द्रियं विशुद्धं च स्थितं कर्मण्यथाद्भुते ॥१-४६-५॥
tapasvinamatīvātha taṃ munipravaraṃ nṛpa| jitendriyaṃ viśuddhaṃ ca sthitaṃ karmaṇyathādbhute ॥1-46-5॥

तपसा द्योतितात्मानं स्वेष्वङ्गेषु यतं तथा। शुभाचारं शुभकथं सुस्थिरं तमलोलुपम् ॥१-४६-६॥

(By penance, the illuminated self, controlled in own limbs, thus auspicious in conduct and story, firm and not greedy.)
Through penance, one achieves an illuminated self, controlling one's own limbs, thus maintaining auspicious conduct and engaging in auspicious stories, remaining firm and free from greed.
अक्षुद्रमनसूयं च वृद्धं मौनव्रते स्थितम्। शरण्यं सर्वभूतानां पित्रा विप्रकृतं तव ॥१-४६-७॥
akṣudramanasūyaṃ ca vṛddhaṃ maunavrate sthitam। śaraṇyaṃ sarvabhūtānāṃ pitrā viprakṛtaṃ tava ॥1-46-7॥

शशापाथ स तच्छ्रुत्वा पितरं ते रुषान्वितः। ऋषेः पुत्रो महातेजा बालोऽपि स्थविरैर्वरः ॥१-४६-८॥
śaśāpātha sa tacchrutvā pitaraṃ te ruṣānvitaḥ। ṛṣeḥ putro mahātejā bālo'pi sthavirairvaraḥ ॥1-46-8॥

स क्षिप्रमुदकं स्पृष्ट्वा रोषादिदमुवाच ह। पितरं तेऽभिसन्धाय तेजसा प्रज्वलन्निव ॥१-४६-९॥
saḥ kṣipramudakaṃ spṛṣṭvā roṣādidamuvāca ha। pitaraṃ te'bhisandhāya tejasā prajvalanniva ॥1-46-9॥

[अनागसि (anāgasi) - innocent; गुरौ (gurau) - teacher; यः (yaḥ) - who; मे (me) - my; मृतम् (mṛtam) - dead; सर्पम् (sarpam) - snake; अवासृजत् (avāsṛjat) - threw; तम् (tam) - that; नागः (nāgaḥ) - serpent; तक्षकः (takṣakaḥ) - Takshaka; क्रुद्धः (kruddhaḥ) - angry; तेजसा (tejasā) - with energy; सादयिष्यति (sādayiṣyati) - will strike; सप्तरात्रात् (saptarātrāt) - after seven nights; इतः (itaḥ) - from now; पापम् (pāpam) - sin; पश्य (paśya) - see; मे (me) - my; तपसः (tapasaḥ) - of penance; बलम् (balam) - strength;]
(On the innocent teacher who threw my dead snake, that serpent Takshaka, angry, will strike with energy. After seven nights from now, see the strength of my penance against sin.)

इत्युक्त्वा प्रययौ तत्र पिता यत्रास्य सोऽभवत्। दृष्ट्वा च पितरं तस्मै शापं तं प्रत्यवेदयत् ॥१-४६-११॥
ityuktvā prayayau tatra pitā yatrāsya so'bhavat. dṛṣṭvā ca pitaraṃ tasmai śāpaṃ taṃ pratyavedayat ॥1-46-11॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; प्रययौ (prayayau) - departed; तत्र (tatra) - there; पिता (pitā) - father; यत्र (yatra) - where; अस्य (asya) - his; सः (saḥ) - he; अभवत् (abhavat) - was; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; च (ca) - and; पितरं (pitaraṃ) - father; तस्मै (tasmai) - to him; शापं (śāpaṃ) - curse; तं (taṃ) - that; प्रत्यवेदयत् (pratyavedayat) - conveyed;]
(Thus having spoken, the father departed there where he was. Having seen the father, he conveyed that curse to him.)

स चापि मुनिशार्दूलः प्रेषयामास ते पितुः। शप्तोऽसि मम पुत्रेण यत्तो भव महीपते ॥ तक्षकस्त्वां महाराज तेजसा सादयिष्यति ॥१-४६-१२॥
sa cāpi muniśārdūlaḥ preṣayāmāsa te pituḥ। śapto'si mama putreṇa yatto bhava mahīpate ॥ takṣakastvāṃ mahārāja tejasā sādayiṣyati ॥1-46-12॥
[स (sa) - he; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; मुनिशार्दूलः (muniśārdūlaḥ) - O tiger among sages; प्रेषयामास (preṣayāmāsa) - sent; ते (te) - your; पितुः (pituḥ) - father; शप्तः (śaptaḥ) - cursed; असि (asi) - are; मम (mama) - my; पुत्रेण (putreṇa) - by son; यत्तः (yattaḥ) - alert; भव (bhava) - be; महीपते (mahīpate) - O king; तक्षकः (takṣakaḥ) - Takshaka; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; तेजसा (tejasā) - by power; सादयिष्यति (sādayiṣyati) - will bring down;]
(He, O tiger among sages, also sent your father. You are cursed by my son, be alert, O king. Takshaka will bring you down, O great king, by power.)

श्रुत्वा तु तद्वचो घोरं पिता ते जनमेजय। यत्तोऽभवत्परित्रस्तस्तक्षकात्पन्नगोत्तमात् ॥१-४६-१३॥
śrutvā tu tadvaco ghoraṃ pitā te janamejaya। yatto'bhavatparitrastastakṣakātpannagottamāt ॥1-46-13॥
[श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; तु (tu) - but; तद्वचः (tadvacaḥ) - those words; घोरं (ghoraṃ) - terrible; पिता (pitā) - father; ते (te) - your; जनमेजय (janamejaya) - Janamejaya; यत्तः (yattaḥ) - attentive; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; परित्रस्तः (paritrastaḥ) - frightened; तक्षकात् (takṣakāt) - from Takshaka; पन्नगोत्तमात् (pannagottamāt) - from the best of serpents;]
(Having heard those terrible words, your father Janamejaya became attentive and frightened from Takshaka, the best of serpents.)
Upon hearing those dreadful words, your father Janamejaya became alert and was terrified of Takshaka, the supreme serpent.
ततस्तस्मिंस्तु दिवसे सप्तमे समुपस्थिते। राज्ञः समीपं ब्रह्मर्षिः काश्यपो गन्तुमैच्छत ॥१-४६-१४॥
tatastasmiṃstu divase saptame samupasthite। rājñaḥ samīpaṃ brahmarṣiḥ kāśyapo gantumaicchat ॥1-46-14॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; तु (tu) - indeed; दिवसे (divase) - day; सप्तमे (saptame) - seventh; समुपस्थिते (samupasthite) - arrived; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - king's; समीपं (samīpam) - presence; ब्रह्मर्षिः (brahmarṣiḥ) - sage; काश्यपः (kāśyapaḥ) - Kashyapa; गन्तुम् (gantum) - to go; ऐच्छत (aicchat) - desired;]
(Then, on that seventh day, when it had arrived, the sage Kashyapa desired to go to the king's presence.)
On the seventh day, when the time had come, the sage Kashyapa wished to visit the king.
तं ददर्शाथ नागेन्द्रः काश्यपं तक्षकस्तदा। तमब्रवीत्पन्नगेन्द्रः काश्यपं त्वरितं व्रजन् ॥१-४६-१५॥
taṁ dadarśātha nāgendraḥ kāśyapaṁ takṣakastadā| tamabravītpannagendraḥ kāśyapaṁ tvaritaṁ vrajan ॥1-46-15॥

(Then the king of serpents Takshaka saw Kashyapa. The king of serpents said to him, Kashyapa, going quickly.)
Then, the serpent king Takshaka saw Kashyapa and said to him, 'Kashyapa, go quickly.'
क्व भवांस्त्वरितो याति किं च कार्यं चिकीर्षति ॥१-४६-१५॥
kva bhavāṃstvarito yāti kiṃ ca kāryaṃ cikīrṣati ॥1-46-15॥
[क्व (kva) - where; भवांस् (bhavāṃs) - you; त्वरितः (tvaritaḥ) - hurried; याति (yāti) - go; किं (kiṃ) - what; च (ca) - and; कार्यं (kāryaṃ) - task; चिकीर्षति (cikīrṣati) - intend;]
(Where are you hurriedly going and what task do you intend?)

काश्यप उवाच॥

[काश्यप (kāśyapa) - Kashyapa; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
(Kashyapa said:)

यत्र राजा कुरुश्रेष्ठः परिक्षिन्नाम वै द्विज। तक्षकेण भुजङ्गेन धक्ष्यते किल तत्र वै ॥१-४६-१६॥
yatra rājā kuruśreṣṭhaḥ parikṣinnāma vai dvija। takṣakeṇa bhujaṅgena dhakṣyate kila tatra vai ॥1-46-16॥
[यत्र (yatra) - where; राजा (rājā) - king; कुरुश्रेष्ठः (kuruśreṣṭhaḥ) - best of the Kurus; परिक्षिन्नाम (parikṣinnāma) - named Parikshit; वै (vai) - indeed; द्विज (dvija) - O Brahmin; तक्षकेण (takṣakeṇa) - by Takshaka; भुजङ्गेन (bhujaṅgena) - by the serpent; धक्ष्यते (dhakṣyate) - will be bitten; किल (kila) - indeed; तत्र (tatra) - there; वै (vai) - indeed;]
(Where the king, best of the Kurus, named Parikshit, indeed, O Brahmin, will be bitten by Takshaka, the serpent, indeed, there.)
O Brahmin, it is said that there, the king Parikshit, the best of the Kurus, will indeed be bitten by the serpent Takshaka.
गच्छाम्यहं तं त्वरितः सद्यः कर्तुमपज्वरम्। मयाभिपन्नं तं चापि न सर्पो धर्षयिष्यति ॥१-४६-१७॥
gacchāmyahaṃ taṃ tvaritaḥ sadyaḥ kartumapajvaram। mayābhipannaṃ taṃ cāpi na sarpo dharṣayiṣyati ॥1-46-17॥
[गच्छामि (gacchāmi) - I go; अहम् (aham) - I; तम् (tam) - him; त्वरितः (tvaritaḥ) - quickly; सद्यः (sadyaḥ) - immediately; कर्तुम् (kartum) - to do; अपज्वरम् (apajvaram) - relief; मया (mayā) - by me; अभिपन्नम् (abhipannam) - approached; तम् (tam) - him; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; न (na) - not; सर्पः (sarpaḥ) - snake; धर्षयिष्यति (dharṣayiṣyati) - will harm;]
(I go quickly to immediately provide relief. The snake will not harm him whom I have approached.)

किमर्थं तं मया दष्टं सञ्जीवयितुमिच्छसि। ब्रूहि काममहं तेऽद्य दद्मि स्वं वेश्म गम्यताम् ॥१-४६-१८॥
kimarthaṃ taṃ mayā daṣṭaṃ sañjīvayitumicchasi। brūhi kāmamahaṃ te'dya dadmi svaṃ veśma gamyatām ॥1-46-18॥
[किमर्थं (kimarthaṃ) - why; तं (taṃ) - him; मया (mayā) - by me; दष्टं (daṣṭaṃ) - bitten; सञ्जीवयितुम् (sañjīvayitum) - to revive; इच्छसि (icchasi) - you wish; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - tell; कामम् (kāmam) - desire; अहम् (aham) - I; ते (te) - to you; अद्य (adya) - today; दद्मि (dadmi) - I give; स्वम् (svam) - own; वेश्म (veśma) - house; गम्यताम् (gamyatām) - go;]
(Why do you wish to revive him bitten by me? Tell me the desire I give you today, go to your own house.)

धनलिप्सुरहं तत्र यामीत्युक्तश्च तेन सः। तमुवाच महात्मानं मानयञ्श्लक्ष्णया गिरा ॥१-४६-१९॥
dhanalipsurahaṁ tatra yāmītyuktaśca tena saḥ। tamuvāca mahātmānaṁ mānayañślakṣṇayā girā ॥1-46-19॥
[धनलिप्सुः (dhanalipsuḥ) - desirous of wealth; अहम् (aham) - I; तत्र (tatra) - there; यामि (yāmi) - go; इति (iti) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - said; च (ca) - and; तेन (tena) - by him; सः (saḥ) - he; तम् (tam) - to him; उवाच (uvāca) - said; महात्मानम् (mahātmānam) - great soul; मानयन् (mānayan) - honoring; श्लक्ष्णया (ślakṣṇayā) - with gentle; गिरा (girā) - speech;]
(Desirous of wealth, I go there, thus said by him. He spoke to the great soul, honoring with gentle speech.)

यावद्धनं प्रार्थयसे तस्माद्राज्ञस्ततोऽधिकम्। गृहाण मत्त एव त्वं संनिवर्तस्व चानघ ॥१-४६-२०॥

तस्मिन्वृक्षे नरः कश्चिदिन्धनार्थाय पार्थिव। विचिन्वन्पूर्वमारूढः शुष्कशाखं वनस्पतिम् ॥१-४६-२९॥
tasmin vṛkṣe naraḥ kaścid indhanārthāya pārthivaḥ। vicinvan pūrvam ārūḍhaḥ śuṣkaśākhaṃ vanaspatim ॥1-46-29॥

निःश्वासमुष्णमसकृद्दीर्घं राजीवलोचनः। मुमोचाश्रूणि च तदा नेत्राभ्यां प्रततं नृपः ॥ उवाच च महीपालो दुःखशोकसमन्वितः ॥१-४६-३४॥
niḥśvāsamuṣṇamasakṛddīrghaṃ rājīvalocanaḥ| mumocāśrūṇi ca tadā netrābhyāṃ pratataṃ nṛpaḥ ॥ uvāca ca mahīpālo duḥkhaśokasamanvitaḥ ॥1-46-34॥

(The lotus-eyed one repeatedly released warm and long breaths; then the king continuously shed tears from his eyes. And the ruler of the earth, filled with grief and sorrow, spoke.)

श्रुत्वैतद्भवतां वाक्यं पितुर्मे स्वर्गतिं प्रति। निश्चितेयं मम मतिर्या वै तां मे निबोधत ॥१-४६-३५॥

अनन्तरमहं मन्ये तक्षकाय दुरात्मने। प्रतिकर्तव्यमित्येव येन मे हिंसितः पिता ॥१-४६-३६॥
anantaramahaṁ manye takṣakāya durātmane। pratikartavyamityeva yena me hiṁsitaḥ pitā ॥1-46-36॥

ऋषेर्हि शृङ्गेर्वचनं कृत्वा दग्ध्वा च पार्थिवम्। यदि गच्छेदसौ पापो ननु जीवेत्पिता मम ॥१-४६-३७॥
ṛṣer hi śṛṅger vacanaṃ kṛtvā dagdhvā ca pārthivam| yadi gacched asau pāpo nanu jīvet pitā mama ॥1-46-37॥

(Indeed, having done the word of the sage Śṛṅga and having burnt the king, if that sinner goes, surely my father would live.)

परिहीयेत किं तस्य यदि जीवेत्स पार्थिवः। काश्यपस्य प्रसादेन मन्त्रिणां सुनयेन च ॥१-४६-३८॥

(What would diminish of his if the king lives by the grace of Kashyapa and by the good policy of ministers?)
What harm would there be to him if the king continues to live, supported by the grace of Kashyapa and the wise counsel of his ministers?
स तु वारितवान्मोहात्काश्यपं द्विजसत्तमम्। सञ्जिजीवयिषुं प्राप्तं राजानमपराजितम् ॥१-४६-३९॥
sa tu vāritavān mohāt kāśyapaṃ dvijasattamam। sañjijīvayiṣuṃ prāptaṃ rājānam aparājitam ॥1-46-39॥
[स (sa) - he; तु (tu) - but; वारितवान् (vāritavān) - stopped; मोहात् (mohāt) - from delusion; काश्यपं (kāśyapam) - Kashyapa; द्विजसत्तमम् (dvijasattamam) - best of the twice-born; सञ्जिजीवयिषुम् (sañjijīvayiṣum) - desiring to revive; प्राप्तम् (prāptam) - arrived; राजानम् (rājānam) - king; अपराजितम् (aparājitam) - unconquered;]
(But he, from delusion, stopped Kashyapa, the best of the twice-born, who had arrived desiring to revive the unconquered king.)

(Indeed, this is a great transgression of Takshaka, the wicked soul, who gave wealth to the Brahmin so that the king would not be revived thus.)

उत्तङ्कस्य प्रियं कुर्वन्नात्मनश्च महत्प्रियम्। भवतां चैव सर्वेषां यास्याम्यपचितिं पितुः ॥१-४६-४१॥
uttaṅkasya priyaṃ kurvannātmanaśca mahatpriyam। bhavatāṃ caiva sarveṣāṃ yāsyāmyapacitiṃ pituḥ ॥1-46-41॥
[उत्तङ्कस्य (uttaṅkasya) - of Uttanka; प्रियं (priyaṃ) - dear; कुर्वन् (kurvan) - doing; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of oneself; च (ca) - and; महत् (mahat) - great; प्रियम् (priyam) - pleasure; भवतां (bhavatāṃ) - of you; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; सर्वेषाम् (sarveṣām) - of all; यास्यामि (yāsyāmi) - I shall go; अपचितिं (apacitiṃ) - to pay respects; पितुः (pituḥ) - to father;]
(Doing what is dear to Uttanka and greatly pleasing to oneself, and indeed to all of you, I shall go to pay respects to the father.)
I will do what pleases Uttanka and is greatly pleasing to myself and indeed to all of you, and I shall go to pay respects to my father.
