वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

Vaiśampāyana said:
राजोपरिचरो नाम धर्मनित्यो महीपतिः। बभूव मृगयां गन्तुं स कदाचिद्धृतव्रतः ॥१-०५७-१॥
rājoparicaro nāma dharmanityo mahīpatiḥ. babhūva mṛgayāṁ gantuṁ sa kadāciddhṛtavrataḥ ॥1॥
[राज-उपरिचरः (rāja-uparicaraḥ) - King Uparicara; नाम (nāma) - by name; धर्म-नित्यः (dharma-nityaḥ) - constant in dharma; महीपतिः (mahīpatiḥ) - lord of the earth; बभूव (babhūva) - there was; मृगयाम् (mṛgayām) - for hunting; गन्तुम् (gantum) - to go; सः (saḥ) - he; कदाचित् (kadācit) - once; धृत-व्रतः (dhṛta-vrataḥ) - observing a vow.]
There was a king named Uparicara, ever steadfast in dharma; once, while observing a vow, he set out to go hunting.
स चेदिविषयं रम्यं वसुः पौरव-नन्दनः। इन्द्रोपदेशात् जग्राह ग्रहणीयं महीपतिः ॥१-०५७-२॥
sa cediviṣayaṁ ramyaṁ vasuḥ paurava-nandanaḥ. indropadeśāt jagrāha grahaṇīyaṁ mahīpatiḥ ॥2॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; च (ca) - and; चेदि-विषयम् (cedi-viṣayam) - the region of the Cedis; रम्यम् (ramyam) - delightful; वसुः (vasuḥ) - Vasu; पौरव-नन्दनः (paurava-nandanaḥ) - the joy of the Paurava line; इन्द्र-उपदेशात् (indra-upadeśāt) - at the instruction of Indra; जग्राह (jagrāha) - took; ग्रहणीयम् (grahaṇīyam) - to be ruled; महीपतिः (mahīpatiḥ) - the king.]
That king Vasu, the delight of the Paurava line, took possession of the delightful Cedi land at the instruction of Indra.
तमाश्रमे न्यस्तशस्त्रं निवसन्तं तपोरतिम्। देवः साक्षात्स्वयं वज्री समुपायान्महीपतिम् ॥१-०५७-३॥
tam āśrame nyastaśastraṁ nivasantaṁ taporatim. devaḥ sākṣāt svayaṁ vajrī samupāyān mahīpatim ॥3॥
[तम् (tam) - him; आश्रमे (āśrame) - in the hermitage; न्यस्त-शस्त्रम् (nyasta-śastram) - one who had laid down arms; निवसन्तम् (nivasantam) - dwelling; तपः-रतिम् (tapaḥ-ratim) - devoted to austerity; देवः (devaḥ) - the god; साक्षात् (sākṣāt) - directly; स्वयम् (svayam) - himself; वज्री (vajrī) - wielder of the thunderbolt (Indra); समुपायात् (samupāyāt) - approached; महीपतिम् (mahīpatim) - the king.]
Indra, the wielder of the thunderbolt, directly approached the king who dwelt in a hermitage, having laid down his arms and devoted to austerity.
इन्द्रत्वम् अर्हः राजा अयम् तपसा इति अनुचिन्त्य वै। तम् सान्त्वेन नृपम् साक्षात् तपसः संन्यवर्तयत् ॥१-०५७-४॥
indratvam arhaḥ rājā ayaṁ tapasā iti anucintya vai. tam sāntvena nṛpam sākṣāt tapasaḥ saṁnyavartayat ॥4॥
[इन्द्रत्वम् (indratvam) - lordship of the gods; अर्हः (arhaḥ) - worthy of; राजा (rājā) - the king; अयम् (ayam) - this; तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; इति (iti) - thus; अनुचिन्त्य (anucintya) - thinking; वै (vai) - indeed; तम् (tam) - him; सान्त्वेन (sāntvena) - with persuasion; नृपम् (nṛpam) - the king; साक्षात् (sākṣāt) - directly; तपसः (tapasaḥ) - from austerity; संन्यवर्तयत् (saṁnyavartayat) - turned away.]
Thinking that this king was indeed worthy of Indraship through his austerity, Indra directly turned him away from asceticism through gentle persuasion.
इन्द्र उवाच॥

[इन्द्रः (indraḥ) - Indra; उवाच (uvāca) - said.]
Indra said:
न सङ्कीर्येत धर्मोऽयं पृथिव्यां पृथिवीपते। तं पाहि धर्मो हि धृतः कृत्स्नं धारयते जगत् ॥१-०५७-५॥
na saṅkīryeta dharmo’yaṁ pṛthivyāṁ pṛthivīpate. taṁ pāhi dharmo hi dhṛtaḥ kṛtsnaṁ dhārayate jagat ॥5॥
[न (na) - not; सङ्कीर्येत (saṅkīryeta) - should be confused or mixed; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - dharma; अयम् (ayam) - this; पृथिव्याम् (pṛthivyām) - on earth; पृथिवीपते (pṛthivīpate) - O lord of the earth; तम् (tam) - it; पाहि (pāhi) - protect; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - dharma; हि (hi) - indeed; धृतः (dhṛtaḥ) - when upheld; कृत्स्नम् (kṛtsnam) - the whole; धारयते (dhārayate) - sustains; जगत् (jagat) - the world.]
Let this dharma not be confused on earth, O king. Protect it, for dharma, when upheld, sustains the entire world.
लोक्यं धर्मं पालय त्वं नित्ययुक्तः समाहितः। धर्मयुक्तस्ततो लोकान् पुण्यानाप्स्यसि शाश्वतान् ॥१-०५७-६॥
lokyaṁ dharmaṁ pālaya tvaṁ nityayuktaḥ samāhitaḥ. dharmayuktas tato lokān puṇyān āpsyasi śāśvatān ॥6॥
[लोक्यम् (lokyam) - observable; धर्मम् (dharmam) - dharma; पालय (pālaya) - uphold; त्वम् (tvam) - you; नित्ययुक्तः (nityayuktaḥ) - constantly devoted; समाहितः (samāhitaḥ) - composed; धर्मयुक्तः (dharmayuktaḥ) - engaged in dharma; ततः (tataḥ) - then; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; पुण्यान् (puṇyān) - meritorious; आप्स्यसि (āpsyasi) - you will attain; शाश्वतान् (śāśvatān) - eternal.]
Uphold the observable dharma with constant devotion and composure; being established in dharma, you will attain eternal and meritorious worlds.
दिविष्ठस्य भुविष्ठस्त्वं सखा भूत्वा मम प्रियः। ऊधः पृथिव्या यो देशस्तमावस नराधिप ॥१-०५७-७॥
diviṣṭhasya bhuviṣṭhas tvaṁ sakhā bhūtvā mama priyaḥ. ūdhaḥ pṛthivyā yo deśas tam āvasa narādhipa ॥7॥
[दिविष्ठस्य (diviṣṭhasya) - dwelling in heaven; भुविष्ठः (bhuviṣṭhaḥ) - one dwelling on earth; त्वम् (tvam) - you; सखा (sakhā) - friend; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; मम (mama) - my; प्रियः (priyaḥ) - dear one; ऊधः (ūdhaḥ) - raised; पृथिव्याः (pṛthivyāḥ) - of the earth; यः (yaḥ) - which; देशः (deśaḥ) - region; तम् (tam) - that; आवस (āvasa) - dwell in; नराधिप (narādhipa) - O king of men.]
You, dwelling on earth, are the dear friend of me who dwells in heaven. O king, dwell in that exalted land upon the earth.
पशव्यश्चैव पुण्यश्च सुस्थिरो धनधान्यवान्। स्वारक्ष्यश्चैव सौम्यश्च भोग्यैर्भूमिगुणैर्युतः ॥१-०५७-८॥
paśavyaś caiva puṇyaś ca susthiro dhanadhānyavān. svārakṣyaś caiva saumyaś ca bhogyair bhūmiguṇair yutaḥ ॥8॥
[पशव्यः (paśavyaḥ) - abounding in cattle; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; पुण्यः (puṇyaḥ) - auspicious; च (ca) - and; सुस्थिरः (susthiraḥ) - very stable; धन-धान्यवान् (dhana-dhānyavān) - rich in wealth and grain; स्व-आरक्ष्यः (sva-ārakṣyaḥ) - self-defending; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; सौम्यः (saumyaḥ) - gentle; भोग्यैः (bhogyaiḥ) - enjoyable; भूमिगुणैः (bhūmiguṇaiḥ) - with qualities of the land; युतः (yutaḥ) - endowed.]
That land is rich in cattle, auspicious, very stable, abundant in wealth and grain, self-protecting, gentle, and endowed with delightful qualities of the earth.
अत्यन्यानेष देशो हि धनरत्नादिभिर्युतः। वसुपूर्णा च वसुधा वस चेदिषु चेदिप ॥१-०५७-९॥
atyanyāneṣa deśo hi dhanaratnādibhir yutaḥ. vasupūrṇā ca vasudhā vasa cediṣu cedipa ॥9॥
[अत्यन्यान् (atyanyān) - surpassing others; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; देशः (deśaḥ) - land; हि (hi) - indeed; धन-रत्न-आदिभिः (dhana-ratna-ādibhiḥ) - with wealth, gems, and the like; युतः (yutaḥ) - endowed; वसु-पूर्णा (vasu-pūrṇā) - full of riches; च (ca) - and; वसुधा (vasudhā) - the earth; वस (vasa) - dwell; चेदिषु (cediṣu) - in the Cedis; चेदिप (cedipa) - O king of the Cedis.]
This land indeed surpasses others, being endowed with wealth, gems, and the like; the earth here is full of riches — dwell in the Cedi land, O king of the Cedis.
धर्मशीलाः जनपदाः सुसन्तोषाः च साधवः। न च मिथ्या-प्रलापः अत्र स्वैरेषु अपि कुतः अन्यथा ॥१-०५७-१०॥
dharmaśīlāḥ janapadāḥ susantoṣāś ca sādhavaḥ. na ca mithyāpralāpo’tra svaireṣu api kuto’nyathā ॥10॥
[धर्मशीलाः (dharmaśīlāḥ) - virtuous; जनपदाः (janapadāḥ) - people; सुसन्तोषाः (susantoṣāḥ) - very content; च (ca) - and; साधवः (sādhavaḥ) - noble ones; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; मिथ्या-प्रलापः (mithyā-pralāpaḥ) - false speech; अत्र (atra) - here; स्वैरेषु (svaireṣu) - among the free; अपि (api) - even; कुतः (kutaḥ) - where (is the chance); अन्यथा (anyathā) - otherwise.]
The people here are virtuous, content, and noble; even among the free there is no false speech — how then can it be otherwise?
न च पित्रा विभज्यन्ते नरा गुरुहिते रताः। युञ्जते धुरि नो गाश्च कृशाः सन्धुक्षयन्ति च ॥१-०५७-११॥
na ca pitrā vibhajyante narā guruhite ratāḥ. yuñjate dhuri no gāś ca kṛśāḥ sandhukṣayanti ca ॥11॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; पित्रा (pitrā) - by the father; विभज्यन्ते (vibhajyante) - are separated; नराः (narāḥ) - men; गुरु-हिते (guru-hite) - in service of elders; रताः (ratāḥ) - devoted; युञ्जते (yuñjate) - they yoke; धुरी (dhuri) - to the yoke; नः (naḥ) - our; गाः (gāḥ) - cows; च (ca) - and; कृशाः (kṛśāḥ) - lean ones; सन्धुक्षयन्ति (sandhukṣayanti) - they goad; च (ca) - also.]
Men devoted to the service of elders are not separated by their father; they yoke our lean cows to the yoke and urge them onward.
सर्वे वर्णाः स्वधर्मस्थाः सदा चेदिषु मानद। न तेऽस्त्यविदितं किञ्चित्त्रिषु लोकेषु यद्भवेत् ॥१-०५७-१२॥
sarve varṇāḥ svadharmasthāḥ sadā cediṣu mānada. na te’sty aviditaṁ kiñcit triṣu lokeṣu yad bhavet ॥12॥
[सर्वे (sarve) - all; वर्णाः (varṇāḥ) - castes; स्वधर्मस्थाः (svadharmasthāḥ) - abiding in their own duty; सदा (sadā) - always; चेदिषु (cediṣu) - among the Cedis; मानद (mānada) - O honour-giver; न (na) - not; ते (te) - to them; अस्ति (asti) - there is; अविदितम् (aviditam) - unknown; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; त्रिषु लोकेषु (triṣu lokeṣu) - in the three worlds; यत् (yat) - which; भवेत् (bhavet) - may exist.]
All castes among the Cedis, O honourable one, always abide in their own dharma; nothing in the three worlds is unknown to them.
देवोपभोग्यं दिव्यं च आकाशे स्फाटिकं महत्। आकाशगं त्वां मद्दत्तं विमानमुपपत्स्यते ॥१-०५७-१३॥
devopabhogyaṁ divyaṁ ca ākāśe sphāṭikaṁ mahat. ākāśagaṁ tvāṁ maddattaṁ vimānam upapatsyate ॥13॥
[देव-उपभोग्यम् (deva-upabhogyam) - fit for divine enjoyment; दिव्यम् (divyam) - celestial; च (ca) - and; आकाशे (ākāśe) - in the sky; स्फाटिकम् (sphāṭikam) - crystalline; महत् (mahat) - great; आकाशगम् (ākāśagam) - sky-going; त्वाम् (tvām) - for you; मद्-दत्तम् (mad-dattam) - given by me; विमानम् (vimānam) - chariot; उपपत्स्यते (upapatsyate) - will appear.]
A great crystalline celestial chariot, fit for divine enjoyment, will appear for you in the sky — a sky-going vehicle granted by me.
त्वमेकः सर्वमर्त्येषु विमानवरमास्थितः। चरिष्यसि उपरिस्थः वै देवः विग्रहवानिव ॥१-०५७-१४॥
tvam ekaḥ sarvamartyeṣu vimānavaram āsthitaḥ. cariṣyasi uparisthaḥ vai devaḥ vigrahavān iva ॥14॥
[त्वम् (tvam) - you; एकः (ekaḥ) - alone; सर्व-मर्त्येषु (sarva-martyeṣu) - among all mortals; विमान-वरम् (vimāna-varam) - the best chariot; आस्थितः (āsthitaḥ) - having mounted; चरिष्यसि (cariṣyasi) - you will move about; उपरिस्थः (uparisthaḥ) - above; वै (vai) - indeed; देवः (devaḥ) - a god; विग्रहवान् (vigrahavān) - embodied; इव (iva) - as if.]
You alone, among all mortals, mounted on the finest chariot, shall move about above — like a god in embodied form.
ददामि ते वैजयन्तीं मालाम् अम्लान-पङ्कजाम्। धारयिष्यति सङ्ग्रामे या त्वां शस्त्रैः अविक्षतम् ॥१-०५७-१५॥
dadāmi te vaijayantīṁ mālām amlānapaṅkajām. dhārayiṣyati saṅgrāme yā tvāṁ śastraiḥ avikṣatam ॥15॥
[ददामि (dadāmi) - I give; ते (te) - to you; वैजयन्तीम् (vaijayantīm) - the garland of victory; मालाम् (mālām) - garland; अम्लान-पङ्कजाम् (amlāna-paṅkajām) - of unfading lotuses; धारयिष्यति (dhārayiṣyati) - it will adorn; सङ्ग्रामे (saṅgrāme) - in battle; या (yā) - which; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; शस्त्रैः (śastraiḥ) - by weapons; अविक्षतम् (avikṣatam) - unpierced.]
I bestow on you the Vaiśayantī garland made of unfading lotuses, which shall adorn you in battle, keeping you unscathed by weapons.
लक्षणं चैतदेवेह भविता ते नराधिप। इन्द्रमालेति विख्यातं धन्यमप्रतिमं महत् ॥१-०५७-१६॥
lakṣaṇaṁ caitad eveha bhavitā te narādhipa. indramāleti vikhyātaṁ dhanyam apratimaṁ mahat ॥16॥
[लक्षणम् (lakṣaṇam) - mark; च (ca) - and; एतत् (etat) - this; एव (eva) - indeed; इह (iha) - here; भविता (bhavitā) - shall be; ते (te) - for you; नराधिप (narādhipa) - O king; इन्द्रमाला (indramālā) - Indra's garland; इति (iti) - as; विख्यातम् (vikhyātam) - famed; धन्यम् (dhanyam) - blessed; अप्रतिमम् (apratimam) - unequalled; महत् (mahat) - great.]
This will be your distinguishing mark here, O king — the garland of Indra, renowned as blessed, great, and without equal.
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

Vaiśampāyana said:
यष्टिं च वैणवीं तस्मै ददौ वृत्रनिषूदनः। इष्टप्रदानम् उद्दिश्य शिष्टानां परिपालिनीम् ॥१-०५७-१७॥
yaṣṭiṁ ca vaiṇavīṁ tasmai dadau vṛtraniṣūdanaḥ. iṣṭapradānam uddiśya śiṣṭānāṁ paripālinīm ॥17॥
[यष्टिम् (yaṣṭim) - staff; च (ca) - and; वैणवीं (vaiṇavīm) - made of bamboo; तस्मै (tasmai) - to him; वृत्रनिषूदनः (vṛtraniṣūdanaḥ) - the slayer of Vṛtra (Indra); इष्ट-प्रदानम् (iṣṭa-pradānam) - for granting of wishes; उद्दिश्य (uddiśya) - with the intent; शिष्टानाम् (śiṣṭānām) - of the virtuous; परिपालिनीम् (paripālinīm) - as protector.]
Indra, the slayer of Vṛtra, gave him a bamboo staff, meant to grant wishes and serve as the protector of the virtuous.
तस्याः शक्रस्य पूजार्थं भूमौ भूमिपतिस्तदा। प्रवेशं कारयामास गते संवत्सरे तदा ॥१-०५७-१८॥
tasyāḥ śakrasya pūjārthaṁ bhūmau bhūmipatistadā. praveśaṁ kārayāmāsa gate saṁvatsare tadā ॥18॥
[तस्याः (tasyāḥ) - of that (staff); शक्रस्य (śakrasya) - of Indra; पूजार्थम् (pūjārtham) - for the sake of worship; भूमौ (bhūmau) - on the earth; भूमिपतिः (bhūmipatiḥ) - the king; तदा (tadā) - then; प्रवेशम् (praveśam) - entry (ceremony); कारयामास (kārayāmāsa) - caused to be done; गते (gate) - after passing; संवत्सरे (saṁvatsare) - one year; तदा (tadā) - at that time.]
Then the king, for the worship of Indra, caused an entry ceremony to be held on earth for that staff, at the end of the year.
ततः प्रभृति च अद्यापि यष्ट्याः क्षितिप-सत्तमैः। प्रवेशः क्रियते राजन् यथा तेन प्रवर्तितः ॥१-०५७-१९॥
tataḥ prabhṛti ca adyāpi yaṣṭyāḥ kṣitipasattamaiḥ. praveśaḥ kriyate rājan yathā tena pravartitaḥ ॥19॥
[ततः प्रभृति (tataḥ prabhṛti) - from that time onward; च (ca) - and; अद्यापि (adyāpi) - even today; यष्ट्याः (yaṣṭyāḥ) - of the staff; क्षिति-सत्तमैः (kṣiti-sattamaiḥ) - by the best of kings; प्रवेशः (praveśaḥ) - the procession; क्रियते (kriyate) - is performed; राजन् (rājan) - O king; यथा (yathā) - as; तेन (tena) - by him; प्रवर्तितः (pravartitaḥ) - instituted.]
From that time to this very day, O king, the entry ceremony of the staff is performed by the best of kings, as instituted by him.
अपरेद्युस्तथा चास्याः क्रियते उच्छ्रयः नृपैः। अलङ्कृतायाः पिटकैः गन्धैः माल्यैः च भूषणैः। माल्यदाम-परिक्षिप्ता विधिवत् क्रियते अपि च ॥१-०५७-२०॥
aparedyus tathā cāsyāḥ kriyate ucchrayaḥ nṛpaiḥ. alaṅkṛtāyāḥ piṭakaiḥ gandhaiḥ mālyaiś ca bhūṣaṇaiḥ. mālyadāmaparikṣiptā vidhivat kriyate api ca ॥20॥
[अपरेद्युः (aparedyuḥ) - the next day; तथा (tathā) - likewise; च (ca) - and; अस्याः (asyāḥ) - of it (the staff); क्रियते (kriyate) - is made; उच्छ्रयः (ucchrayaḥ) - elevation or enshrinement; नृपैः (nṛpaiḥ) - by kings; अलङ्कृतायाः (alaṅkṛtāyāḥ) - decorated; पिटकैः (piṭakaiḥ) - with cloth-canopies; गन्धैः (gandhaiḥ) - with fragrances; माल्यैः (mālyaiḥ) - garlands; च (ca) - and; भूषणैः (bhūṣaṇaiḥ) - ornaments; माल्यदाम-परिक्षिप्ता (mālyadāma-parikṣiptā) - encircled by garland-ropes; विधिवत् (vidhivat) - according to ritual; क्रियते (kriyate) - is done; अपि (api) - also; च (ca) - and.]
On the next day, its elevation is also performed by kings — adorned with canopies, perfumes, garlands, and ornaments, encircled by garlands, and done according to proper ritual.
भगवान्पूज्यते चात्र हास्यरूपेण शङ्करः। स्वयमेव गृहीतेन वसोः प्रीत्या महात्मनः ॥१-०५७-२१॥
bhagavān pūjyate cātra hāsyarūpeṇa śaṅkaraḥ. svayam eva gṛhītena vasoḥ prītyā mahātmanaḥ ॥21॥
[भगवान् (bhagavān) - the Lord; पूज्यते (pūjyate) - is worshipped; च (ca) - and; अत्र (atra) - here; हास्य-रूपेण (hāsyarūpeṇa) - in a humorous form; शङ्करः (śaṅkaraḥ) - Śaṅkara (Śiva); स्वयम् (svayam) - himself; एव (eva) - indeed; गृहीतेन (gṛhītena) - assumed; वसोः (vasoḥ) - of Vasu; प्रीत्या (prītyā) - with affection; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - of the great soul.]
Here, Śaṅkara is worshipped in a humorous form, having assumed it himself out of affection for the great-souled Vasu.
एतां पूजां महेन्द्रस्तु दृष्ट्वा देवकृतां शुभाम्। वसुना राजमुख्येन प्रीतिमानब्रवीद्विभुः ॥१-०५७-२२॥
etāṁ pūjāṁ mahendras tu dṛṣṭvā devakṛtāṁ śubhām. vasunā rājamukhyena prītimān abravīd vibhuḥ ॥22॥
[एताम् (etām) - this; पूजाम् (pūjām) - worship; महेन्द्रः (mahendraḥ) - Indra; तु (tu) - but; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; देव-कृताम् (deva-kṛtām) - performed for the god; शुभाम् (śubhām) - auspicious; वसुना (vasunā) - by Vasu; राज-मुख्येन (rāja-mukhyena) - the foremost among kings; प्रीतिमान् (prītimān) - pleased; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; विभुः (vibhuḥ) - the mighty one.]
Having seen this auspicious worship for the god performed by the noble king Vasu, Indra, the mighty one, spoke with delight.
ये पूजयिष्यन्ति नरा राजानश्च महं मम। कारयिष्यन्ति च मुदा यथा चेदिपतिर्नृपः ॥१-०५७-२३॥
ye pūjayiṣyanti narā rājānaś ca mahaṁ mama. kārayiṣyanti ca mudā yathā cedipatir nṛpaḥ ॥23॥
[ये (ye) - those who; पूजयिष्यन्ति (pūjayiṣyanti) - will worship; नराः (narāḥ) - men; राजानः (rājānaḥ) - kings; च (ca) - and; महम् (maham) - the festival; मम (mama) - of mine; कारयिष्यन्ति (kārayiṣyanti) - will conduct; च (ca) - and; मुदा (mudā) - with joy; यथा (yathā) - as; चेदि-पतिः (cedi-patiḥ) - the lord of the Cedis; नृपः (nṛpaḥ) - the king.]
Those men and kings who joyfully conduct my festival and worship me as the king of the Cedis did—
तेषां श्रीः विजयः चैव स-राष्ट्राणां भविष्यति। तथा स्फीतः जनपदः मुदितः च भविष्यति ॥१-०५७-२४॥
teṣāṁ śrīr vijayaś caiva sa-rāṣṭrāṇāṁ bhaviṣyati. tathā sphītaḥ janapadaḥ muditaś ca bhaviṣyati ॥24॥
[तेषाम् (teṣām) - for them; श्रीः (śrīḥ) - prosperity; विजयः (vijayaḥ) - victory; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; स-राष्ट्राणाम् (sa-rāṣṭrāṇām) - along with their kingdoms; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - shall be; तथा (tathā) - likewise; स्फीतः (sphītaḥ) - flourishing; जनपदः (janapadaḥ) - populace; मुदितः (muditaḥ) - joyful; च (ca) - and; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - shall be.]
They and their kingdoms shall enjoy prosperity and victory; likewise, their people will be flourishing and joyful.
एवं महात्मना तेन महेन्द्रेण नराधिप। वसुः प्रीत्या मघवता महाराजः अभिसत्कृतः ॥१-०५७-२५॥
evaṁ mahātmanā tena mahendreṇa narādhipa. vasuḥ prītyā maghavatā mahārājaḥ abhisatkṛtaḥ ॥25॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; महात्मना (mahātmanā) - by the great-souled; तेन (tena) - by that; महेन्द्रेण (mahendreṇa) - by Mahendra (Indra); नराधिप (narādhipa) - O king; वसुः (vasuḥ) - Vasu; प्रीत्या (prītyā) - with affection; मघवता (maghavatā) - by Indra; महाराजः (mahārājaḥ) - the great king; अभिसत्कृतः (abhisatkṛtaḥ) - was honored.]
Thus was King Vasu, O ruler of men, honored with affection by the great-souled Mahendra, the mighty Indra.
उत्सवं कारयिष्यन्ति सदा शक्रस्य ये नराः। भूमिदानादिभिर्दानैर्यथा पूता भवन्ति वै॥ वरदानमहायज्ञैस्तथा शक्रोत्सवेन ते ॥१-०५७-२६॥
utsavaṁ kārayiṣyanti sadā śakrasya ye narāḥ। bhūmi-dāna-ādibhiḥ dānaiḥ yathā pūtā bhavanti vai॥ vara-dāna-mahā-yajñaiḥ tathā śakra-utsavena te ॥26॥
[उत्सवम् (utsavam) - festival; कारयिष्यन्ति (kārayiṣyanti) - will cause to be held; सदा (sadā) - always; शक्रस्य (śakrasya) - of Śakra (Indra); ये (ye) - those who; नराः (narāḥ) - men; भूमिदानादिभिः (bhūmi-dāna-ādibhiḥ) - through gifts like land; दानैः (dānaiḥ) - with donations; यथा (yathā) - as; पूता (pūtāḥ) - purified; भवन्ति (bhavanti) - they become; वै (vai) - indeed; वरदान-महायज्ञैः (vara-dāna-mahā-yajñaiḥ) - by great sacrifices and gift-giving; तथा (tathā) - likewise; शक्रोत्सवेन (śakra-utsavena) - through Śakra's festival; ते (te) - they]
Those men who always conduct Śakra's festival become purified, just as by gifts like land and great sacrificial offerings.
सम्पूजितो मघवता वसुश्चेदिपतिस्तदा। पालयामास धर्मेण चेदिस्थः पृथिवीमिमाम्॥ इन्द्रप्रीत्या भूमिपतिश्चकारेन्द्रमहं वसुः ॥१-०५७-२७॥
sampūjito maghavatā vasuś-cedipatis-tadā। pālayāmāsa dharmeṇa cedisthaḥ pṛthivīm-imām॥ indra-prītyā bhūmi-patiś-ca-kāra indra-mahaṁ vasuḥ ॥27॥
[सम्पूजितः (sampūjitaḥ) - honored; मघवता (maghavatā) - by Maghavan (Indra); वसुः (vasuḥ) - Vasu; चेदिपतिः (cedipatiḥ) - the lord of the Cedis; तदा (tadā) - then; पालयामास (pālayāmāsa) - ruled; धर्मेण (dharmeṇa) - with righteousness; चेदिस्थः (cedisthaḥ) - residing in Cedi; पृथिवीम् (pṛthivīm) - the earth; इमाम् (imām) - this; इन्द्रप्रीत्या (indra-prītyā) - out of devotion to Indra; भूमिपतिः (bhūmi-patiḥ) - the lord of the land; चकार (cakāra) - performed; इन्द्रमहम् (indra-maham) - Indra festival; वसुः (vasuḥ) - Vasu]
Then Vasu, the lord of the Cedis, honored by Maghavan, ruled this earth from Cedi with righteousness and performed the Indra festival out of devotion to Indra.
पुत्राश्चास्य महावीर्याः पञ्चासन्नमितौजसः। नानाराज्येषु च सुतान्स सम्राडभ्यषेचयत् ॥१-०५७-२८॥
putrāś-cāsya mahā-vīryāḥ pañca āsan-amita-ojasāḥ। nānā-rājyeṣu ca sutān sa samrāḍ-abhyaṣecayat ॥28॥
[पुत्राः (putrāḥ) - sons; च (ca) - and; अस्य (asya) - his; महावीर्याः (mahā-vīryāḥ) - of great strength; पञ्च (pañca) - five; आसन् (āsan) - were; अमितौजसः (amita-ojasāḥ) - of immense energy; नाना-राज्येषु (nānā-rājyeṣu) - in various kingdoms; च (ca) - and; सुतान् (sutān) - sons; सः (saḥ) - he; सम्राट् (samrāṭ) - the emperor; अभ्यषेचयत् (abhyaṣecayat) - anointed]
He had five sons of great strength and immense energy, and the emperor anointed them as rulers over various kingdoms.
महारथो मगधराड्विश्रुतो यो बृहद्रथः। प्रत्यग्रहः कुशाम्बश्च यमाहुर्मणिवाहनम्॥ मच्छिल्लश्च यदुश्चैव राजन्यश्चापराजितः ॥१-०५७-२९॥
mahā-ratho magadha-rāṭ-viśrutaḥ yo bṛhadrathaḥ। pratyagrahaḥ kuśāmbaś-ca yam āhur-maṇi-vāhanam॥ macchillaś-ca yaduś-caiva rājanyaś-cāparājitaḥ ॥29॥
[महारथः (mahārathaḥ) - great chariot-warrior; मगधराट् (magadha-rāṭ) - king of Magadha; विश्रुतः (viśrutaḥ) - renowned; यः (yaḥ) - who; बृहद्रथः (bṛhadrathaḥ) - Bṛhadratha; प्रत्यग्रहः (pratyagrahaḥ) - Pratyagraha; कुशाम्बः (kuśāmbaḥ) - Kuśāmba; च (ca) - and; यम् (yam) - whom; आहुः (āhuḥ) - they call; मणिवाहनम् (maṇi-vāhanam) - Maṇivāhana; मच्छिल्लः (macchillaḥ) - Macchilla; यदुः (yaduḥ) - Yadu; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; राजन्यः (rājanyaḥ) - Rājanya; च (ca) - and; अपराजितः (aparājitaḥ) - undefeated]
Bṛhadratha, the renowned great warrior and king of Magadha; Pratyagraha, Kuśāmba (also called Maṇivāhana), Macchilla, Yadu, and Rājanya the undefeated—
एते तस्य सुता राजन्राजर्षेर्भूरितेजसः। न्यवेशयन्नामभिः स्वैस्ते देशांश्च पुराणि च॥ वासवाः पञ्च राजानः पृथग्वंशाश्च शाश्वताः ॥१-०५७-३०॥
ete tasya sutā rājan rājarṣer bhūri-tejasaḥ। nyaveśayan nāmabhiḥ svais-te deśāṁś-ca purāṇi ca॥ vāsavāḥ pañca rājānaḥ pṛthag-vaṁśāś-ca śāśvatāḥ ॥30॥
[एते (ete) - these; तस्य (tasya) - his; सुताः (sutāḥ) - sons; राजन् (rājan) - O king; राजर्षेः (rājarṣeḥ) - of the royal sage; भूरितेजसः (bhūri-tejasaḥ) - of great brilliance; न्यवेशयन् (nyaveśayan) - settled; नामभिः (nāmabhiḥ) - with their names; स्वैः (svaiḥ) - their own; ते (te) - they; देशान् (deśān) - lands; च (ca) - and; पुराणि (purāṇi) - cities; वासवाः (vāsavāḥ) - of Indra’s line; पञ्च (pañca) - five; राजानः (rājānaḥ) - kings; पृथक् (pṛthak) - distinct; वंशाः (vaṁśāḥ) - lineages; च (ca) - and; शाश्वताः (śāśvatāḥ) - eternal]
These were the sons of that royal sage of great brilliance, O king. They founded lands and cities bearing their own names. These five kings of Indra's line became founders of eternal, distinct dynasties.
वसन्तमिन्द्रप्रासादे आकाशे स्फाटिके च तम्। उपतस्थुर्महात्मानं गन्धर्वाप्सरसो नृपम्॥ राजोपरिचरेत्येवं नाम तस्याथ विश्रुतम् ॥१-०५७-३१॥
vasantam indra-prāsāde ākāśe sphāṭike ca tam। upatasthur mahātmānaṁ gandharvāpsaraso nṛpam॥ rājoparicarety-evaṁ nāma tasyātha viśrutam ॥31॥
[वसन्तम् (vasantam) - residing; इन्द्रप्रासादे (indra-prāsāde) - in Indra’s palace; आकाशे (ākāśe) - in the sky; स्फाटिके (sphāṭike) - crystalline; च (ca) - and; तम् (tam) - him; उपतस्थुः (upatasthuḥ) - attended upon; महात्मानम् (mahātmānam) - the great-souled one; गन्धर्व-अप्सरसः (gandharva-apsarasaḥ) - gandharvas and apsaras; नृपम् (nṛpam) - the king; राजोपरिचर (rājoparicara) - Rājoparicara; इति (iti) - thus; एवम् (evam) - thus; नाम (nāma) - name; तस्य (tasya) - of him; अथ (atha) - then; विश्रुतम् (viśrutam) - famed]
The great-souled king, residing in Indra’s crystalline palace in the sky, was attended by gandharvas and apsaras. He then became famed by the name Rājoparicara.
पुरोपवाहिनीं तस्य नदीं शुक्तिमतीं गिरिः। अरौत्सीच्चेतनायुक्तः कामात्कोलाहलः किल ॥१-०५७-३२॥
puropavāhinīṁ tasya nadīṁ śuktimatīṁ giriḥ। arautsīc-cetanāyuktaḥ kāmāt kolāhalaḥ kila ॥32॥
[पुर-उपवाहिनीं (pura-upavāhinīṁ) - flowing past the city; तस्य (tasya) - his; नदीं (nadīṁ) - river; शुक्तिमतीं (śuktimatīṁ) - named Śuktimatī; गिरिः (giriḥ) - the mountain; अरौत्सीत् (arautsīt) - attacked/violated; चेतनायुक्तः (cetanāyuktaḥ) - endowed with consciousness; कामात् (kāmāt) - out of desire; कोलाहलः (kolāhalaḥ) - Kolāhala (name of the mountain); किल (kila) - indeed]
The mountain Kolāhala, endowed with consciousness, indeed attacked the river Śuktimatī, which flowed past his city, out of desire.
गिरिं कोलाहलं तं तु पदा वसुरताडयत्। निश्चक्राम नदी तेन प्रहारविवरेण सा ॥१-०५७-३३॥
giriṁ kolāhalaṁ taṁ tu padā vasur-atāḍayat। niścakrāma nadī tena prahāra-vivareṇa sā ॥33॥
[गिरिं (girim) - the mountain; कोलाहलम् (kolāhalam) - Kolāhala; तम् (tam) - him; तु (tu) - but; पदा (padā) - with his foot; वसुः (vasuḥ) - Vasu; अताडयत् (atāḍayat) - struck; निश्चक्राम (niścakrāma) - flowed out; नदी (nadī) - the river; तेन (tena) - through that; प्रहारविवरेण (prahāra-vivareṇa) - by the cavity made by the blow; सा (sā) - she]
But Vasu struck the mountain Kolāhala with his foot, and through the cavity made by that blow, the river flowed out.
तस्यां नद्यामजनयन्मिथुनं पर्वतः स्वयम्। तस्माद्विमोक्षणात्प्रीता नदी राज्ञे न्यवेदयत् ॥१-०५७-३४॥
tasyāṁ nadyām ajanayān-mithunaṁ parvataḥ svayam। tasmād-vimokṣaṇāt prītā nadī rājñe nyavedayat ॥34॥
[तस्याम् (tasyām) - in her; नद्याम् (nadyām) - river; अजयन (ajanayan) - begot; मिथुनम् (mithunam) - a pair (male and female); पर्वतः (parvataḥ) - the mountain; स्वयम् (svayam) - himself; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - because of that; विमोक्षणात् (vimokṣaṇāt) - deliverance; प्रीता (prītā) - pleased; नदी (nadī) - the river; राज्ञे (rājñe) - to the king; न्यवेदयत् (nyavedayat) - reported]
The mountain himself begot a male and female pair in the river. Pleased by her deliverance, the river reported this to the king.
यः पुमानभवत्तत्र तं स राजर्षिसत्तमः। वसुर्वसुप्रदश्चक्रे सेनापतिमरिंदमम्॥ चकार पत्नीं कन्यां तु दयितां गिरिकां नृपः ॥१-०५७-३५॥
yaḥ pumān abhavat tatra taṁ sa rājarṣi-sattamaḥ। vasur vasu-pradaś-cakre senā-patim ariṁ-damam॥ cakāra patnīṁ kanyāṁ tu dayitāṁ girikāṁ nṛpaḥ ॥35॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; पुमान् (pumān) - the male child; अभवत् (abhavat) - was born; तत्र (tatra) - there; तम् (tam) - him; सः (saḥ) - he; राजर्षिसत्तमः (rājarṣi-sattamaḥ) - the foremost of royal sages; वसुः (vasuḥ) - Vasu; वसुप्रदं (vasu-pradam) - Vasuprada; चक्रे (cakre) - made; सेनापतिम् (senā-patim) - the general; अरिंदमम् (ariṁ-damam) - subduer of enemies; चकार (cakāra) - made; पत्नीं (patnīṁ) - wife; कन्यां (kanyāṁ) - the girl; तु (tu) - but; दयितां (dayitāṁ) - beloved; गिरिकां (girikāṁ) - Girikā; नृपः (nṛpaḥ) - the king]
The male child born there was appointed as general and subduer of enemies by the great royal sage Vasu, and the king took the beloved girl Girikā as his wife.
वसोः पत्नी तु गिरिका कामात्काले न्यवेदयत्। ऋतुकालमनुप्राप्तं स्नाता पुंसवने शुचिः ॥१-०५७-३६॥
vasoḥ patnī tu girikā kāmāt kāle nyavedayat। ṛtu-kālam anuprāptaṁ snātā puṁsavane śuciḥ ॥36॥
[वसोः (vasoḥ) - of Vasu; पत्नी (patnī) - wife; तु (tu) - indeed; गिरिका (girikā) - Girikā; कामात् (kāmāt) - out of desire; काले (kāle) - at the proper time; न्यवेदयत् (nyavedayat) - informed; ऋतुकालम् (ṛtu-kālam) - the fertile period; अनुप्राप्तम् (anuprāptam) - has arrived; स्नाता (snātā) - bathed; पुंसवने (puṁsavane) - for conception; शुचिः (śuciḥ) - pure]
Girikā, the wife of Vasu, informed him with desire at the proper time that her fertile period had arrived; she had bathed and was pure, ready for conception.
तदहः पितरश्चैनमूचुर्जहि मृगानिति। तं राजसत्तमं प्रीतास्तदा मतिमतां वरम् ॥१-०५७-३७॥
tad-ahaḥ pitaraś-cainam ūcur jahi mṛgān iti। taṁ rāja-sattamaṁ prītās tadā matimatāṁ varam ॥37॥
[तदहः (tad-ahaḥ) - that day; पितरः (pitaraḥ) - the ancestors; च (ca) - and; एनम् (enam) - to him; ऊचुः (ūcuḥ) - said; जहि (jahi) - hunt; मृगान् (mṛgān) - deer; इति (iti) - thus; तम् (tam) - him; राजसत्तमम् (rāja-sattamam) - best of kings; प्रीताः (prītāḥ) - pleased; तदा (tadā) - then; मतिमताम् (matimatām) - among the wise; वरम् (varam) - foremost]
That very day, the ancestors, pleased with him, said to that wise and foremost of kings, “Hunt deer.”
स पितृणां नियोगं तमव्यतिक्रम्य पार्थिवः। चचार मृगयां कामी गिरिकामेव संस्मरन्॥ अतीव रूपसम्पन्नां साक्षाच्छ्रियमिवापराम् ॥१-०५७-३८॥
sa pitṛṇāṁ niyogaṁ tam avyatikramya pārthivaḥ। cacāra mṛgayāṁ kāmī girikām eva saṁsmaran॥ atīva rūpa-sampannāṁ sākṣāt śriyam iva aparām ॥38॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; पितृणाम् (pitṛṇām) - of the ancestors; नियोगम् (niyogam) - command; तम् (tam) - that; अव्यतिक्रम्य (avyatikramya) - without disobeying; पार्थिवः (pārthivaḥ) - the king; चचार (cacāra) - roamed; मृगयाम् (mṛgayām) - for hunting; कामी (kāmī) - full of desire; गिरिकाम् (girikām) - Girikā; एव (eva) - only; संस्मरन् (saṁsmaran) - remembering; अतीव (atīva) - exceedingly; रूपसम्पन्नाम् (rūpa-sampannām) - endowed with beauty; साक्षात् (sākṣāt) - directly; श्रियम् (śriyam) - Śrī (goddess of beauty and fortune); इव (iva) - as if; अपराम् (aparām) - another]
The king, without disobeying the command of his ancestors, went hunting, full of desire, all the while remembering Girikā—who was exceedingly beautiful, like another incarnation of the goddess Śrī herself.
तस्य रेतः प्रचस्कन्द चरतो रुचिरे वने। स्कन्नमात्रं च तद्रेतो वृक्षपत्रेण भूमिपः ॥१-०५७-३९॥
tasya retaḥ pracaskanda carato rucire vane। skanna-mātraṁ ca tad-reto vṛkṣa-patreṇa bhūmi-paḥ ॥39॥
[तस्य (tasya) - his; रेतः (retaḥ) - semen; प्रचस्कन्द (pracaskanda) - discharged; चरतः (carataḥ) - while moving; रुचिरे (rucire) - delightful; वने (vane) - in the forest; स्कन्नमात्रम् (skanna-mātram) - just as it was discharged; च (ca) - and; तत् (tat) - that; रेतः (retaḥ) - semen; वृक्षपत्रेण (vṛkṣa-patreṇa) - with a tree leaf; भूमिपः (bhūmi-paḥ) - the king]
As he moved through the delightful forest, his semen was discharged, and the king collected it immediately with a tree leaf.
प्रतिजग्राह मिथ्या मे न स्कन्देद्रेत इत्युत। ऋतुश्च तस्याः पत्न्या मे न मोघः स्यादिति प्रभुः ॥१-०५७-४०॥
pratijagrāha mithyā me na skanded reta ity-uta। ṛtuś-ca tasyāḥ patnyā me na moghaḥ syād iti prabhuḥ ॥40॥
[प्रतिजग्राह (pratijagrāha) - he accepted; मिथ्या (mithyā) - falsely; मे (me) - of mine; न (na) - not; स्कन्देत् (skandet) - should be spilled; रेतः (retaḥ) - semen; इति (iti) - thus; उते (uta) - indeed; ऋतुः (ṛtuḥ) - the fertile time; च (ca) - and; तस्याः (tasyāḥ) - of her; पत्न्याः (patnyāḥ) - wife; मे (me) - of mine; न (na) - not; मोघः (moghaḥ) - wasted; स्यात् (syāt) - should be; इति (iti) - thus; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - the lord]
The lord accepted it, saying, “May my semen not be wasted in vain; may my wife’s fertile time not go fruitless.”
सञ्चिन्त्यैवं तदा राजा विचार्य च पुनः पुनः। अमोघत्वं च विज्ञाय रेतसो राजसत्तमः ॥१-०५७-४१॥
sañcintyaivaṁ tadā rājā vicārya ca punaḥ punaḥ। amoghatvaṁ ca vijñāya retaso rājasattamaḥ ॥41॥
[सञ्चिन्त्य (sañcintya) - having deeply thought; एवम् (evam) - thus; तदा (tadā) - then; राजा (rājā) - the king; विचार्य (vicārya) - having reflected; च (ca) - and; पुनः पुनः (punaḥ punaḥ) - again and again; अमोघत्वम् (amoghatvam) - efficacy (non-futility); च (ca) - and; विज्ञाय (vijñāya) - having understood; रेतसः (retasaḥ) - of the semen; राजसत्तमः (rājasattamaḥ) - best of kings]
The best of kings, having thus thought and reflected repeatedly, understood the potency of his semen.
शुक्रप्रस्थापने कालं महिष्याः प्रसमीक्ष्य सः। अभिमन्त्र्याथ तच्छुक्रमारात्तिष्ठन्तमाशुगम्॥ सूक्ष्मधर्मार्थतत्त्वज्ञो ज्ञात्वा श्येनं ततोऽब्रवीत् ॥१-०५७-४२॥
śukra-prasthāpane kālaṁ mahiṣyāḥ prasamīkṣya saḥ। abhimantryātha tac-chukram ārāt tiṣṭhantam āśugam॥ sūkṣma-dharma-artha-tattva-jño jñātvā śyenaṁ tato 'bravīt ॥42॥
[शुक्रप्रस्थापने (śukra-prasthāpane) - for dispatching the semen; कालम् (kālam) - the time; महिष्याः (mahiṣyāḥ) - of the queen; प्रसमीक्ष्य (prasamīkṣya) - having observed; सः (saḥ) - he; अभिमन्त्र्य (abhimantrya) - having consecrated; अथ (atha) - then; तत् (tat) - that; शुक्रम् (śukram) - semen; आरात् (ārāt) - from a distance; तिष्ठन्तम् (tiṣṭhantam) - standing; आशुगम् (āśugam) - swift; सूक्ष्मधर्मार्थतत्त्वज्ञः (sūkṣma-dharma-artha-tattva-jñaḥ) - knower of subtle dharma and meanings; ज्ञात्वा (jñātvā) - having recognized; श्येनम् (śyenam) - the hawk; ततः (tataḥ) - then; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said]
Observing the right time for sending the semen to his queen, he consecrated it and, seeing a swift hawk nearby, the knower of subtle dharma and truth addressed it.
मत्प्रियार्थमिदं सौम्य शुक्रं मम गृहं नय। गिरिकायाः प्रयच्छाशु तस्या ह्यार्तवमद्य वै ॥१-०५७-४३॥
mat-priyārtham idaṁ saumya śukraṁ mama gṛhaṁ naya। girikāyāḥ prayacchāśu tasyā hy ārtavam adya vai ॥43॥
[मत्-प्रियार्थम् (mat-priyārtham) - for my beloved’s sake; इदं (idaṁ) - this; सौम्य (saumya) - gentle one; शुक्रम् (śukram) - semen; मम (mama) - of mine; गृहम् (gṛham) - to the house; नय (naya) - take; गिरिकायाः (girikāyāḥ) - to Girikā; प्रयच्छ (prayaccha) - deliver; आशु (āśu) - quickly; तस्या (tasyāḥ) - her; हि (hi) - indeed; आर्तवम् (ārtavam) - fertile period; अद्य (adya) - today; वै (vai) - truly]
O gentle one, take this semen to my house for the sake of my beloved. Deliver it quickly to Girikā, for today is her fertile time indeed.
गृहीत्वा तत्तदा श्येनस्तूर्णमुत्पत्य वेगवान्। जवं परममास्थाय प्रदुद्राव विहङ्गमः ॥१-०५७-४४॥
gṛhītvā tat tadā śyenas tūrṇam utpatya vegavān। javaṁ paramam āsthāya pradudrāva vihaṅgamaḥ ॥44॥
[गृहीत्वा (gṛhītvā) - having taken; तत् (tat) - that; तदा (tadā) - then; श्येनः (śyenaḥ) - the hawk; तूर्णम् (tūrṇam) - swiftly; उत्पत्य (utpatya) - flying up; वेगवान् (vegavān) - swift; जवं (javam) - speed; परमम् (paramam) - utmost; आस्थाय (āsthāya) - having taken on; प्रदुद्राव (pradudrāva) - flew quickly; विहङ्गमः (vihaṅgamaḥ) - the bird]
Having taken it, the swift hawk immediately flew up with great speed and soared rapidly through the sky.
तमपश्यदथायान्तं श्येनं श्येनस्तथापरः। अभ्यद्रवच्च तं सद्यो दृष्ट्वैवामिषशङ्कया ॥१-०५७-४५॥
tam apaśyad athāyāntaṁ śyenaṁ śyenas tathāparaḥ। abhyadravac ca taṁ sadyo dṛṣṭvāivāmiṣa-śaṅkayā ॥45॥
[तम् (tam) - him; अपश्यत् (apaśyat) - saw; अथ (atha) - then; आयान्तम् (āyāntam) - coming; श्येनम् (śyenam) - the hawk; श्येनः (śyenaḥ) - a hawk; तथा (tathā) - likewise; अपरः (aparaḥ) - another; अभ्यद्रवत् (abhyadravat) - rushed toward; च (ca) - and; तम् (tam) - him; सद्यः (sadyaḥ) - immediately; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - seeing; एव (eva) - indeed; आमिष-शङ्कया (āmiṣa-śaṅkayā) - out of the suspicion of flesh (prey)]
Then, as the hawk was flying with the semen, another hawk saw him and immediately chased him, suspecting he was carrying flesh.
तुण्डयुद्धमथाकाशे तावुभौ सम्प्रचक्रतुः। युध्यतोरपतद्रेतस्तच्चापि यमुनाम्भसि ॥१-०५७-४६॥
tuṇḍa-yuddham athākāśe tāv ubhau sampracakratuḥ। yudhyator apatad retas tac cāpi yamunāmbhasi ॥46॥
[तुण्डयुद्धम् (tuṇḍa-yuddham) - beak-to-beak fight; अथ (atha) - then; आकाशे (ākāśe) - in the sky; तौ (tau) - those two; उभौ (ubhau) - both; सम्प्रचक्रतुः (sampracakratuḥ) - engaged in; युध्यतोः (yudhyatoḥ) - while they were fighting; अपतत् (apatat) - fell down; रेतः (retaḥ) - the semen; तत् (tat) - that; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; यमुनाम्भसि (yamunāmbhasi) - into the waters of Yamunā]
The two hawks then fought a beak-to-beak battle in the sky, and as they fought, the semen fell into the waters of the Yamunā.
तत्राद्रिकेति विख्याता ब्रह्मशापाद्वराप्सराः। मीनभावमनुप्राप्ता बभूव यमुनाचरी ॥१-०५७-४७॥
tatrādriketi vikhyātā brahma-śāpād varāpsarāḥ। mīna-bhāvam anuprāptā babhūva yamunācarī ॥47॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; आद्रिका (ādrikā) - Ādrikā; इति (iti) - thus; विख्याता (vikhyātā) - known; ब्रह्मशापात् (brahma-śāpāt) - due to Brahmā’s curse; वर-अप्सराः (vara-apsarāḥ) - a noble apsarā; मीनभावम् (mīna-bhāvam) - the form/state of a fish; अनुप्राप्ता (anuprāptā) - had attained; बभूव (babhūva) - became; यमुनाचरी (yamunācarī) - roaming in the Yamunā]
There dwelled Ādrikā, a noble apsarā known by that name, who, due to a curse from Brahmā, had taken the form of a fish and lived in the Yamunā.
श्येनपादपरिभ्रष्टं तद्वीर्यमथ वासवम्। जग्राह तरसोपेत्य साद्रिका मत्स्यरूपिणी ॥१-०५७-४८॥
śyena-pāda-paribhraṣṭaṁ tad vīryam atha vāsavam। jagrāha tarasopetya sādrikā matsya-rūpiṇī ॥48॥
[श्येन-पाद-परिभ्रष्टम् (śyena-pāda-paribhraṣṭam) - fallen from the hawk’s foot; तत् (tat) - that; वीर्यम् (vīryam) - semen; अथ (atha) - then; वासवम् (vāsavam) - of Vasu; जग्राह (jagrāha) - seized; तरसा (tarasā) - swiftly; उपेत्य (upetya) - approaching; सा (sā) - she; आद्रिका (ādrikā) - Ādrikā; मत्स्यरूपिणी (matsya-rūpiṇī) - in the form of a fish]
Ādrikā, in the form of a fish, swiftly approached and seized the semen of Vasu, which had fallen from the hawk’s foot.
कदाचिदथ मत्सीं तां बबन्धुर्मत्स्यजीविनः। मासे च दशमे प्राप्ते तदा भरतसत्तम॥ उज्जह्रुरुदरात्तस्याः स्त्रीपुमांसं च मानुषम् ॥१-०५७-४९॥
kadācid atha matsīṁ tāṁ babandhur matsya-jīvinaḥ। māse ca daśame prāpte tadā bharata-sattama॥ ujjahrur udarāt tasyāḥ strī-pumāṁsaṁ ca mānuṣam ॥49॥
[कदाचित् (kadācit) - once; अथ (atha) - then; मत्सीम् (matsīm) - the fish; ताम् (tām) - her; बबन्धुः (babandhuḥ) - caught; मत्स्यजीविनः (matsya-jīvinaḥ) - fishermen; मासे (māse) - in the month; च (ca) - and; दशमे (daśame) - tenth; प्राप्ते (prāpte) - having arrived; तदा (tadā) - then; भरतसत्तम (bharata-sattama) - O best of Bharata’s line; उज्जह्रुः (ujjahruḥ) - they extracted; उदरात् (udarāt) - from the belly; तस्याः (tasyāḥ) - of her; स्त्री-पुमांसम् (strī-pumāṁsam) - female and male child; च (ca) - and; मानुषम् (mānuṣam) - human]
Once, O best of Bharata’s line, fishermen caught that fish, and in the tenth month, they extracted from her belly a human pair—a boy and a girl.
आश्चर्यभूतं मत्वा तद्राज्ञस्ते प्रत्यवेदयन्। काये मत्स्या इमौ राजन्सम्भूतौ मानुषाविति ॥१-०५७-५०॥
āścarya-bhūtaṁ matvā tad rājñas te pratyavedayan। kāye matsyā imau rājan sambhūtau mānuṣāv iti ॥50॥
[आश्चर्यभूतम् (āścarya-bhūtam) - wondrous; मत्वा (matvā) - having thought; तत् (tat) - that; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - to the king; ते (te) - they; प्रत्यवेदयन् (pratyavedayan) - informed; काये (kāye) - in the body; मत्स्याः (matsyāḥ) - of the fish; इमौ (imau) - these two; राजन् (rājan) - O king; सम्भूतौ (sambhūtau) - were born; मानुषौ (mānuṣau) - human; इति (iti) - thus]
Considering it a wonder, they informed the king: “O king, these two humans were born in the body of the fish.”
तयोः पुमांसं जग्राह राजोपरिचरस्तदा। स मत्स्यो नाम राजासीद्धार्मिकः सत्यसङ्गरः ॥१-०५७-५१॥
tayoḥ pumāṁsaṁ jagrāha rājo-paricaraḥ tadā। sa matsyaḥ nāma rājā āsīd dhārmikaḥ satya-saṅgaraḥ ॥51॥
[तयोः (tayoḥ) - of those two; पुमांसं (pumāṁsaṁ) - male child; जग्राह (jagrāha) - took; राजोपरिचरः (rājo-paricaraḥ) - King Uparichara; तदा (tadā) - at that time; सः (saḥ) - he; मत्स्यः (matsyaḥ) - Matsya; नाम (nāma) - by name; राजा (rājā) - king; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; धार्मिकः (dhārmikaḥ) - righteous; सत्यसङ्गरः (satya-saṅgaraḥ) - firm in truth.]
King Uparichara then took the male child born of the two. He became a righteous king named Matsya, firm in truth.
साप्सरा मुक्तशापा च क्षणेन समपद्यत। पुरोक्ता या भगवता तिर्यग्योनिगता शुभे॥ मानुषौ जनयित्वा त्वं शापमोक्षमवाप्स्यसि ॥१-०५७-५२॥
sā apsarā mukta-śāpā ca kṣaṇena samapadyata। puroktā yā bhagavatā tiryak-yonigatā śubhe॥ mānuṣau janayitvā tvaṁ śāpa-mokṣam avāpsyasi ॥52॥
[सा (sā) - she; अप्सरा (apsarā) - the apsara; मुक्तशापा (mukta-śāpā) - released from the curse; च (ca) - and; क्षणेन (kṣaṇena) - in an instant; समपद्यत (samapadyata) - was restored; पुरोक्ता (puroktā) - previously told; या (yā) - who; भगवता (bhagavatā) - by the Lord; तिर्यग्योनिगता (tiryak-yonigatā) - fallen into an animal womb; शुभे (śubhe) - O auspicious one; मानुषौ (mānuṣau) - two humans; जनयित्वा (janayitvā) - having given birth to; त्वम् (tvam) - you; शापमोक्षमवाप्स्यसि (śāpa-mokṣam avāpsyasi) - shall obtain release from the curse.]
That apsara, released from the curse, was instantly restored. As previously told by the Lord, “O auspicious one, having entered an animal womb, you shall bear two humans and attain release from the curse.”
ततः सा जनयित्वा तौ विशस्ता मत्स्यघातिना। सन्त्यज्य मत्स्यरूपं सा दिव्यं रूपमवाप्य च॥ सिद्धर्षिचारणपथं जगामाथ वराप्सराः ॥१-०५७-५३॥
tataḥ sā janayitvā tau viśastā matsya-ghātinā। santyajya matsya-rūpaṁ sā divyaṁ rūpam avāpya ca॥ siddha-ṛṣi-cāraṇa-pathaṁ jagāma ātha vara-apsarāḥ ॥53॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; सा (sā) - she; जनयित्वा (janayitvā) - having given birth to; तौ (tau) - those two; विशस्ता (viśastā) - killed; मत्स्यघातिना (matsya-ghātinā) - by the fisherman; सन्त्यज्य (santyajya) - having abandoned; मत्स्यरूपं (matsya-rūpaṁ) - fish form; सा (sā) - she; दिव्यं (divyaṁ) - divine; रूपम् (rūpam) - form; अवाप्य (avāpya) - having attained; च (ca) - and; सिद्धर्षिचारणपथम् (siddha-ṛṣi-cāraṇa-patham) - the path of siddhas, sages, and celestial beings; जगाम (jagāma) - she went; अथ (ātha) - then; वराप्सराः (vara-apsarāḥ) - the excellent apsara.]
Then, having given birth to the two who were slain by the fisherman, she shed her fish form and attained a divine form. The excellent apsara then proceeded to the path of the siddhas, sages, and celestial beings.
या कन्या दुहिता तस्या मत्स्या मत्स्यसगन्धिनी। राज्ञा दत्ताथ दाशाय इयं तव भवत्विति॥ रूपसत्त्वसमायुक्ता सर्वैः समुदिता गुणैः ॥१-०५७-५४॥
yā kanyā duhitā tasyā matsyā matsya-sagandhinī। rājñā dattā atha dāśāya iyaṁ tava bhavatu iti॥ rūpa-sattva-samāyuktā sarvaiḥ samuditā guṇaiḥ ॥54॥
[या (yā) - who; कन्या (kanyā) - maiden; दुहिता (duhitā) - daughter; तस्या (tasyā) - of her; मत्स्या (matsyā) - named Matsyā; मत्स्यसगन्धिनी (matsya-sagandhinī) - smelling of fish; राज्ञा (rājñā) - by the king; दत्ता (dattā) - given; अथ (atha) - then; दाशाय (dāśāya) - to the boatman; इयं (iyaṁ) - this one; तव (tava) - yours; भवतु (bhavatu) - may she be; इति (iti) - thus; रूपसत्त्वसमायुक्ता (rūpa-sattva-samāyuktā) - endowed with beauty and strength; सर्वैः (sarvaiḥ) - with all; समुदिता (samuditā) - endowed; गुणैः (guṇaiḥ) - with virtues.]
The maiden, her daughter named Matsyā, was known as one who bore the scent of fish. The king then gave her to the boatman saying, “Let this one be yours.” She was endowed with beauty, strength, and all virtues.
सा तु सत्यवती नाम मत्स्यघात्यभिसंश्रयात्। आसीन् मत्स्यसगन्धैव कञ्चित्कालं शुचिस्मिता ॥१-०५७-५५॥
sā tu satyavatī nāma matsya-ghāty-abhisaṁśrayāt। āsīn matsya-sagandhā eva kañcit kālaṁ śuci-smitā ॥55॥
[सा (sā) - she; तु (tu) - indeed; सत्यवती (satyavatī) - Satyavati; नाम (nāma) - by name; मत्स्यघात्यभिसंश्रयात् (matsya-ghāty-abhisaṁśrayāt) - due to her dwelling with the fisherman; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; मत्स्यसगन्धा (matsya-sagandhā) - having the smell of fish; एव (eva) - indeed; कञ्चित्कालं (kañcit kālaṁ) - for some time; शुचिस्मिता (śuci-smitā) - with a pure smile.]
She was then known as Satyavati, and owing to her association with the fisherman, bore the scent of fish for some time, though she had a pure smile.
शुश्रूषार्थं पितुर्नावं तां तु वाहयतीं जले। तीर्थयात्रां परिक्रामन्नपश्यद्वै पराशरः ॥१-०५७-५६॥
śuśrūṣārthaṁ pitur nāvaṁ tāṁ tu vāhayatīṁ jale। tīrtha-yātrāṁ parikrāmann apaśyad vai parāśaraḥ ॥56॥
[शुश्रूषार्थं (śuśrūṣārthaṁ) - for the service; पितुः (pituḥ) - of her father; नावं (nāvaṁ) - the boat; तां (tāṁ) - her; तु (tu) - indeed; वाहयतीं (vāhayatīṁ) - steering; जले (jale) - in the water; तीर्थयात्राम् (tīrtha-yātrām) - a pilgrimage; परिक्रामन् (parikrāmann) - while going around; अपश्यत् (apaśyat) - saw; वै (vai) - indeed; पराशरः (parāśaraḥ) - Parashara.]
While she was steering the boat in water to serve her father, the sage Parashara, on pilgrimage, saw her.
अतीव रूपसम्पन्नां सिद्धानामपि काङ्क्षिताम्। दृष्ट्वैव च स तां धीमांश्चकमे चारुदर्शनाम्॥ विद्वांस्तां वासवीं कन्यां कार्यवान्मुनिपुङ्गवः ॥१-०५७-५७॥
atīva rūpa-sampannāṁ siddhānām api kāṅkṣitām। dṛṣṭvaiva ca sa tāṁ dhīmāṁś cakame cāru-darśanām॥ vidvān tāṁ vāsavīṁ kanyāṁ kāryavān muni-puṅgavaḥ ॥57॥
[अतीव (atīva) - exceedingly; रूपसम्पन्नाम् (rūpa-sampannām) - endowed with beauty; सिद्धानाम् (siddhānām) - by siddhas; अपि (api) - even; काङ्क्षिताम् (kāṅkṣitām) - desired; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; एव (eva) - just then; च (ca) - and; सः (saḥ) - he; ताम् (tām) - her; धीमान् (dhīmān) - wise; चकमे (cakame) - desired; चारुदर्शनाम् (cāru-darśanām) - lovely in appearance; विद्वान् (vidvān) - the learned one; ताम् (tām) - her; वासवीम् (vāsavīm) - daughter of Vasu; कन्याम् (kanyām) - maiden; कार्यवान् (kāryavān) - with a purpose; मुनिपुङ्गवः (muni-puṅgavaḥ) - the foremost of sages.]
Seeing her, exceedingly beautiful and desired even by siddhas, the wise sage Parashara, the foremost among sages, desired the lovely maiden, the daughter of Vasu, with a purpose.
साब्रवीत्पश्य भगवन्पारावारे ऋषीन्स्थितान्। आवयोर्दृश्यतोरेभिः कथं नु स्यात्समागमः ॥१-०५७-५८॥
sā abravīt paśya bhagavan pārāvāre ṛṣīn sthitān। āvayor dṛśyator ebhiḥ kathaṁ nu syāt samāgamaḥ ॥58॥
[सा (sā) - she; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; पश्य (paśya) - behold; भगवन् (bhagavan) - O Lord; पारावारे (pārāvāre) - on both shores; ऋषीन् (ṛṣīn) - sages; स्थितान् (sthitān) - standing; आवयोः (āvayoḥ) - of us two; दृश्यतोः (dṛśyatoḥ) - being seen; एभिः (ebhiḥ) - by these; कथं नु (kathaṁ nu) - how then; स्यात् (syāt) - can there be; समागमः (samāgamaḥ) - union.]
She said, “O Lord, behold the sages standing on both shores. How can there be union between us while being seen by them?”
एवं तयोक्तो भगवान्नीहारमसृजत्प्रभुः। येन देशः स सर्वस्तु तमोभूत इवाभवत् ॥१-०५७-५९॥
evaṁ tayā ukto bhagavān nīhāram asṛjat prabhuḥ। yena deśaḥ sa sarvas tu tamo-bhūta iva abhavat ॥59॥
[एवं (evaṁ) - thus; तया (tayā) - by her; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - addressed; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the Lord; नीहारम् (nīhāram) - a mist; असृजत् (asṛjat) - created; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - the master; येन (yena) - by which; देशः (deśaḥ) - the region; सः (saḥ) - that; सर्वः (sarvaḥ) - entire; तु (tu) - indeed; तमोभूत (tamo-bhūta) - became dark; इव (iva) - as if; अभवत् (abhavat) - became.]
Thus addressed by her, the Lord and master created a mist, by which the entire region became as if enveloped in darkness.
दृष्ट्वा सृष्टं तु नीहारं ततस्तं परमर्षिणा। विस्मिता चाब्रवीत्कन्या व्रीडिता च मनस्विनी ॥१-०५७-६०॥
dṛṣṭvā sṛṣṭaṁ tu nīhāraṁ tataḥ taṁ paramarṣiṇā। vismitā ca abravīt kanyā vrīḍitā ca manasvinī ॥60॥
[दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; सृष्टं (sṛṣṭaṁ) - created; तु (tu) - indeed; नीहारम् (nīhāram) - mist; ततः (tataḥ) - then; तम् (tam) - him; परमर्षिणा (paramarṣiṇā) - by the supreme sage; विस्मिता (vismitā) - astonished; च (ca) - and; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke; कन्या (kanyā) - the maiden; व्रीडिता (vrīḍitā) - bashful; च (ca) - and; मनस्विनी (manasvinī) - noble-minded.]
Seeing the mist created by the supreme sage, the astonished and noble-minded maiden, bashful, spoke to him.
विद्धि मां भगवन्कन्यां सदा पितृवशानुगाम्। त्वत्संयोगाच्च दुष्येत कन्याभावो ममानघ ॥१-०५७-६१॥
viddhi māṁ bhagavan kanyāṁ sadā pitṛ-vaśānugām। tvat-saṁyogāc ca duṣyeta kanyā-bhāvo mama anagha ॥61॥
[विद्धि (viddhi) - know; माम् (mām) - me; भगवन् (bhagavan) - O Lord; कन्याम् (kanyām) - a maiden; सदा (sadā) - always; पितृवशानुगाम् (pitṛ-vaśānugām) - obedient to my father's will; त्वत्संयोगात् (tvat-saṁyogāt) - by union with you; च (ca) - and; दुष्येत (duṣyeta) - would be spoiled; कन्याभावः (kanyā-bhāvaḥ) - maidenhood; मम (mama) - my; अनघ (anagha) - O sinless one.]
Know me, O Lord, to be a maiden always obedient to my father’s will. Union with you would defile my maidenhood, O sinless one.
कन्यात्वे दूषिते चापि कथं शक्ष्ये द्विजोत्तम। गन्तुं गृहं गृहे चाहं धीमन् न स्थातुमुत्सहे॥ एतत्सञ्चिन्त्य भगवन्विधत्स्व यदनन्तरम् ॥१-०५७-६२॥
kanyātve dūṣite cāpi kathaṁ śakṣye dvijottama। gantuṁ gṛhaṁ gṛhe ca ahaṁ dhīman na sthātum utsahe॥ etat sañcintya bhagavan vidhatsva yad anantaram ॥62॥
[कन्यात्वे (kanyātve) - if maidenhood; दूषिते (dūṣite) - is spoiled; च अपि (ca api) - even so; कथं (kathaṁ) - how; शक्ष्ये (śakṣye) - shall I be able; द्विजोत्तम (dvijottama) - O best of the twice-born; गन्तुम् (gantum) - to go; गृहम् (gṛham) - home; गृहे (gṛhe) - at home; च (ca) - and; अहम् (aham) - I; धीमान् (dhīman) - O wise one; न उत्सहे (na utsahe) - am not willing; स्थातुम् (sthātum) - to stay; एतत् (etat) - this; सञ्चिन्त्य (sañcintya) - considering; भगवन् (bhagavan) - O Lord; विधत्स्व (vidhatsva) - do arrange; यत् (yat) - what; अनन्तरम् (anantaram) - follows.]
Even if my maidenhood is spoiled, O best of Brahmins, how shall I go home, or even stay there, O wise one? Therefore, O Lord, consider this and arrange what must follow.
एवमुक्तवतीं तां तु प्रीतिमानृषिसत्तमः। उवाच मत्प्रियं कृत्वा कन्यैव त्वं भविष्यसि ॥१-०५७-६३॥
evam uktavatīṁ tāṁ tu prītimān ṛṣi-sattamaḥ। uvāca mat-priyaṁ kṛtvā kanyā eva tvaṁ bhaviṣyasi ॥63॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तवतीम् (uktavatīm) - having spoken; ताम् (tām) - to her; तु (tu) - indeed; प्रीतिमान् (prītimān) - pleased; ऋषिसत्तमः (ṛṣi-sattamaḥ) - the best of sages; उवाच (uvāca) - said; मत्प्रियम् (mat-priyam) - my wish; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; कन्यैव (kanyā eva) - as a maiden indeed; त्वम् (tvam) - you; भविष्यसि (bhaviṣyasi) - shall remain.]
To her who spoke thus, the pleased best among sages said, “Having done what pleases me, you shall still remain a maiden.”
वृणीष्व च वरं भीरु यं त्वमिच्छसि भामिनि। वृथा हि न प्रसादो मे भूतपूर्वः शुचिस्मिते ॥१-०५७-६४॥
vṛṇīṣva ca varaṁ bhīru yaṁ tvam icchasi bhāmini। vṛthā hi na prasādo me bhūta-pūrvaḥ śuci-smite ॥64॥
[वृणीष्व (vṛṇīṣva) - choose; च (ca) - also; वरम् (varam) - a boon; भीरु (bhīru) - timid one; यं (yam) - whom; त्वम् (tvam) - you; इच्छसि (icchasi) - desire; भामिनि (bhāmini) - O radiant lady; वृथा (vṛthā) - in vain; हि (hi) - indeed; न (na) - not; प्रसादः (prasādaḥ) - my favor; मे (me) - of mine; भूतपूर्वः (bhūta-pūrvaḥ) - ever before; शुचिस्मिते (śuci-smite) - O pure-smiling one.]
“Choose a boon too, O timid and radiant lady, whomever you desire. My favor has never been in vain, O pure-smiling one.”
एवमुक्ता वरं वव्रे गात्रसौगन्ध्यमुत्तमम्। स चास्यै भगवान्प्रादान्मनसः काङ्क्षितं प्रभुः ॥१-०५७-६५॥
evam uktā varaṁ vavre gātra-saugandhyam uttamam। sa ca asyai bhagavān prādāt manasaḥ kāṅkṣitaṁ prabhuḥ ॥65॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्ता (uktā) - addressed; वरम् (varam) - boon; वव्रे (vavre) - she chose; गात्रसौगन्ध्यम् (gātra-saugandhyam) - the finest bodily fragrance; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - supreme; सः (saḥ) - he; च (ca) - and; अस्यै (asyai) - to her; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the Lord; प्रादात् (prādāt) - granted; मनसः (manasaḥ) - of the mind; काङ्क्षितम् (kāṅkṣitam) - desired; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - the master.]
Thus addressed, she chose the finest bodily fragrance as her boon. And the Lord, the master, granted her what she had desired in her heart.
ततो लब्धवरा प्रीता स्त्रीभावगुणभूषिता। जगाम सह संसर्गमृषिणाद्भुतकर्मणा ॥१-०५७-६६॥
tato labdha-varā prītā strī-bhāva-guṇa-bhūṣitā। jagāma saha saṁsargam ṛṣiṇā adbhuta-karmaṇā ॥66॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; लब्धवराः (labdha-varā) - having received the boon; प्रीता (prītā) - delighted; स्त्रीभावगुणभूषिता (strī-bhāva-guṇa-bhūṣitā) - adorned with the qualities of womanhood; जगाम (jagāma) - she engaged in; सह (saha) - with; संसर्गम् (saṁsargam) - union; ऋषिणा (ṛṣiṇā) - with the sage; अद्भुतकर्मणा (adbhuta-karmaṇā) - of wondrous deeds.]
Delighted after receiving the boon and adorned with the virtues of womanhood, she engaged in union with the sage of wondrous deeds.
तेन गन्धवतीत्येव नामास्याः प्रथितं भुवि। तस्यास्तु योजनाद्गन्धमाजिघ्रन्ति नरा भुवि ॥१-०५७-६७॥
tena gandhavatī iti eva nāma asyāḥ prathitaṁ bhuvi। tasyās tu yojanāt gandham ājighranti narā bhuvi ॥67॥
[तेन (tena) - thereby; गन्धवती (gandhavatī) - Gandhavati; इति एव (iti eva) - thus indeed; नाम (nāma) - the name; अस्याः (asyāḥ) - of her; प्रथितम् (prathitam) - became renowned; भुवि (bhuvi) - in the world; तस्याः (tasyāḥ) - of her; तु (tu) - indeed; योजनात् (yojanāt) - from a yojana’s distance; गन्धम् (gandham) - fragrance; आजिघ्रन्ति (ājighranti) - people could smell; नराः (narāḥ) - men; भुवि (bhuvi) - on earth.]
Thus, she became renowned on earth as Gandhavati, and men on earth could smell her fragrance from a yojana away.
ततो योजनगन्धेति तस्या नाम परिश्रुतम्। पराशरोऽपि भगवाञ्जगाम स्वं निवेशनम् ॥१-०५७-६८॥
tato yojana-gandheti tasyā nāma pariśrutam। parāśaraḥ api bhagavān jagāma svaṁ niveśanam ॥68॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; योजनगन्धे (yojana-gandhe) - Yojanagandha (fragrant for a yojana); इति (iti) - thus; तस्या (tasyā) - her; नाम (nāma) - name; परिश्रुतम् (pariśrutam) - became widely known; पराशरः (parāśaraḥ) - Parashara; अपि (api) - also; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the divine one; जगाम (jagāma) - went; स्वम् (svam) - to his own; निवेशनम् (niveśanam) - abode.]
Thereafter, her name became widely known as Yojanagandha, and the divine Parashara returned to his own abode.
इति सत्यवती हृष्टा लब्ध्वा वरमनुत्तमम्। पराशरेण संयुक्ता सद्यो गर्भं सुषाव सा॥ जज्ञे च यमुनाद्वीपे पाराशर्यः स वीर्यवान् ॥१-०५७-६९॥
iti satyavatī hṛṣṭā labdhvā varam anuttamam। parāśareṇa saṁyuktā sadyo garbhaṁ suṣāva sā॥ jajñe ca yamunā-dvīpe pārāśaryaḥ sa vīryavān ॥69॥
[इति (iti) - thus; सत्यवती (satyavatī) - Satyavati; हृष्टा (hṛṣṭā) - delighted; लब्ध्वा (labdhvā) - having obtained; वरम् (varam) - the boon; अनुत्तमम् (anuttamam) - unsurpassed; पराशरेण (parāśareṇa) - by Parashara; संयुक्ता (saṁyuktā) - united; सद्यः (sadyaḥ) - instantly; गर्भम् (garbham) - pregnancy; सुषाव (suṣāva) - she bore; सा (sā) - she; जज्ञे (jajñe) - was born; च (ca) - and; यमुनाद्वीपे (yamunā-dvīpe) - on the isle of Yamuna; पाराशर्यः (pārāśaryaḥ) - son of Parashara; सः (saḥ) - he; वीर्यवान् (vīryavān) - mighty.]
Thus, Satyavati, delighted by the unsurpassed boon, united with Parashara and immediately conceived. On the isle of Yamuna, was born the mighty son of Parashara.
स मातरमुपस्थाय तपस्येव मनो दधे। स्मृतोऽहं दर्शयिष्यामि कृत्येष्विति च सोऽब्रवीत् ॥१-०५७-७०॥
sa mātaram upasthāya tapasy eva mano dadhe। smṛto ’haṁ darśayiṣyāmi kṛtyeṣu iti ca saḥ abravīt ॥70॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; मातरम् (mātaram) - his mother; उपस्थाय (upasthāya) - having approached; तपस्य (tapasy) - in austerity; एव (eva) - indeed; मनः (manaḥ) - mind; दधे (dadhe) - he fixed; स्मृतः (smṛtaḥ) - when remembered; अहम् (aham) - I; दर्शयिष्यामि (darśayiṣyāmi) - shall appear; कृत्येषु (kṛtyeṣu) - in duties; इति (iti) - thus; च (ca) - and; सः (saḥ) - he; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said.]
He approached his mother, fixing his mind as though in austerity, and said, “Whenever remembered, I shall appear for the duties.”
एवं द्वैपायनो जज्ञे सत्यवत्यां पराशरात्। द्वीपे न्यस्तः स यद्बालस्तस्माद्द्वैपायनोऽभवत् ॥१-०५७-७१॥
evaṁ dvaipāyano jajñe satyavatyāṁ parāśarāt। dvīpe nyastaḥ sa yad bālaḥ tasmāt dvaipāyano ’bhavat ॥71॥
[एवं (evaṁ) - thus; द्वैपायनः (dvaipāyanaḥ) - Dvaipāyana; जज्ञे (jajñe) - was born; सत्यवत्याम् (satyavatyām) - from Satyavati; पराशरात् (parāśarāt) - from Parashara; द्वीपे (dvīpe) - on an island; न्यस्तः (nyastaḥ) - placed; सः (saḥ) - he; यत् (yat) - because; बालः (bālaḥ) - the child; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; द्वैपायनः (dvaipāyanaḥ) - Dvaipāyana; अभवत् (abhavat) - became.]
Thus was Dvaipāyana born to Satyavati from Parashara. Since he was placed on an island as a child, he became known as Dvaipāyana.
पादापसारिणं धर्मं विद्वान्स तु युगे युगे। आयुः शक्तिं च मर्त्यानां युगानुगमवेक्ष्य च ॥१-०५७-७२॥
pādāpasāriṇaṁ dharmaṁ vidvān sa tu yuge yuge। āyuḥ śaktiṁ ca martyānāṁ yugānugama-vekṣya ca ॥72॥
[पादापसारिणम् (pādāpasāriṇam) - receding by one-quarter each age; धर्मम् (dharmaṁ) - dharma; विद्वान् (vidvān) - the wise one; सः (saḥ) - he; तु (tu) - indeed; युगे युगे (yuge yuge) - in each age; आयुः (āyuḥ) - lifespan; शक्तिम् (śaktim) - strength; च (ca) - and; मर्त्यानाम् (martyānām) - of mortals; युगानुगमवेक्ष्य (yugānugama-vekṣya) - observing the progression of the ages; च (ca) - and.]
Observing the receding dharma in each age, and the decreasing lifespan and strength of mortals, he, the wise one, acted accordingly in every age.
ब्रह्मणो ब्राह्मणानां च तथानुग्रहकाम्यया। विव्यास वेदान्यस्माच्च तस्माद्व्यास इति स्मृतः ॥१-०५७-७३॥
brahmaṇo brāhmaṇānāṁ ca tathā anugraha-kāmyayā। vivyāsa vedān asmāt ca tasmāt vyāsa iti smṛtaḥ ॥73॥
[ब्रह्मणः (brahmaṇaḥ) - of Brahman; ब्राह्मणानाम् (brāhmaṇānām) - of the Brahmins; च (ca) - and; तथा (tathā) - likewise; अनुग्रहकाम्यया (anugraha-kāmyayā) - with the desire to bless; विव्यास (vivyāsa) - he divided; वेदान् (vedān) - the Vedas; अस्मात् (asmāt) - therefore; च (ca) - and; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - hence; व्यासः (vyāsaḥ) - Vyāsa; इति (iti) - thus; स्मृतः (smṛtaḥ) - is remembered.]
Desiring to bless Brahman and the Brahmins, he divided the Vedas; hence he is remembered as Vyāsa.
वेदानध्यापयामास महाभारतपञ्चमान्। सुमन्तुं जैमिनिं पैलं शुकं चैव स्वमात्मजम् ॥१-०५७-७४॥
vedān adhyāpayām āsa mahābhārata-pañcamān। sumantuṁ jaiminiṁ pailaṁ śukaṁ caiva svam ātmajam ॥74॥
[वेदान् (vedān) - the Vedas; अध्यापयाम् आस (adhyāpayām āsa) - he taught; महाभारतपञ्चमान् (mahābhārata-pañcamān) - with the Mahābhārata as the fifth; सुमन्तुम् (sumantuṁ) - Sumantu; जैमिनिम् (jaiminiṁ) - Jaimini; पैलम् (pailam) - Paila; शुकम् (śukam) - Śuka; च एव (ca eva) - and also; स्वम् (svam) - his own; आत्मजम् (ātmajam) - son.]
He taught the Vedas, with the Mahābhārata as the fifth, to Sumantu, Jaimini, Paila, and also his own son Śuka.
प्रभुर्वरिष्ठो वरदो वैशम्पायनमेव च। संहितास्तैः पृथक्त्वेन भारतस्य प्रकाशिताः ॥१-०५७-७५॥
prabhuḥ variṣṭhaḥ vara-daḥ vaiśampāyanam eva ca। saṁhitāḥ taiḥ pṛthaktvena bhāratasya prakāśitāḥ ॥75॥
[प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - the master; वरिष्ठः (variṣṭhaḥ) - the foremost; वरदः (vara-daḥ) - granter of boons; वैशम्पायनम् (vaiśampāyanam) - Vaiśampāyana; एव च (eva ca) - indeed also; संहिताः (saṁhitāḥ) - collections (recensions); तैः (taiḥ) - by them; पृथक्त्वेन (pṛthaktvena) - separately; भारतस्य (bhāratasya) - of the Bhārata (Mahābhārata); प्रकाशिताः (prakāśitāḥ) - were propagated.]
The master, foremost and boon-giving, also taught Vaiśampāyana. The recensions of the Bhārata were thus propagated separately by them.
तथा भीष्मः शान्तनवो गङ्गायाममितद्युतिः। वसुवीर्यात्समभवन्महावीर्यो महायशाः ॥१-०५७-७६॥
tathā bhīṣmaḥ śāntanavo gaṅgāyām amita-dyutiḥ। vasu-vīryāt samabhavan mahā-vīryo mahā-yaśāḥ ॥76॥
[तथा (tathā) - likewise; भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhīṣma; शान्तनवः (śāntanavaḥ) - son of Śāntanu; गङ्गायाम् (gaṅgāyām) - in Gaṅgā; अमितद्युतिः (amita-dyutiḥ) - of immeasurable brilliance; वसुवीर्यात् (vasu-vīryāt) - from the energy of a Vasu; समभवत् (samabhavat) - was born; महावीर्यः (mahā-vīryaḥ) - of great valor; महायशाः (mahā-yaśāḥ) - of great fame.]
Thus Bhīṣma, son of Śāntanu, of immeasurable brilliance, was born of Gaṅgā from the energy of a Vasu — a mighty and renowned hero.
शूले प्रोतः पुराणर्षिरचोरश्चोरशङ्कया। अणीमाण्डव्य इति वै विख्यातः सुमहायशाः ॥१-०५७-७७॥
śūle protaḥ purāṇarṣiḥ acoraś cora-śaṅkayā। aṇī-māṇḍavya iti vai vikhyātaḥ su-mahā-yaśāḥ ॥77॥
[शूले (śūle) - on a stake; प्रोतः (protaḥ) - impaled; पुराणऋषिः (purāṇa-ṛṣiḥ) - ancient sage; अचोरः (acoraḥ) - though not a thief; चोरशङ्कया (cora-śaṅkayā) - on suspicion of theft; अणीमाण्डव्यः (aṇī-māṇḍavyaḥ) - Aṇī-Māṇḍavya; इति (iti) - thus; वै (vai) - indeed; विख्यातः (vikhyātaḥ) - was known; सुमहायशाः (su-mahā-yaśāḥ) - of very great fame.]
The ancient sage Aṇī-Māṇḍavya, though not a thief, was impaled on a stake due to suspicion of theft. He became renowned as one of great fame.
स धर्ममाहूय पुरा महर्षिरिदमुक्तवान्। इषीकया मया बाल्यादेका विद्धा शकुन्तिका ॥१-०५७-७८॥
sa dharmaṁ āhūya purā maharṣiḥ idam uktavān। iṣīkayā mayā bālyāt ekā viddhā śakuntikā ॥78॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; धर्मम् (dharmaṁ) - Dharma (personified); आहूय (āhūya) - having summoned; पुरा (purā) - once; महर्षिः (maharṣiḥ) - the great sage; इदम् (idam) - this; उक्तवान् (uktavān) - spoke; इषीकया (iṣīkayā) - with a grass-blade; मया (mayā) - by me; बाल्यात् (bālyāt) - in childhood; एका (ekā) - one; विद्धा (viddhā) - was pierced; शकुन्तिका (śakuntikā) - small bird.]
Once, the great sage summoned Dharma and said this: “In my childhood, I pierced a small bird with a blade of grass.”
तत्किल्बिषं स्मरे धर्म नान्यत्पापमहं स्मरे। तन्मे सहस्रसमितं कस्मान्नेहाजयत्तपः ॥१-०५७-७९॥
tat kilbiṣaṁ smare dharma na anyat pāpam ahaṁ smare। tan me sahasra-samitaṁ kasmān na iha ājayat tapaḥ ॥79॥
[तत् (tat) - that; किल्बिषम् (kilbiṣam) - sin; स्मरे (smare) - I remember; धर्म (dharma) - O Dharma; न (na) - not; अन्यत् (anyat) - any other; पापम् (pāpam) - sin; अहम् (aham) - I; स्मरे (smare) - remember; तत् (tat) - that; मे (me) - for me; सहस्रसमितम् (sahasra-samitam) - a thousand-fold; कस्मात् (kasmāt) - why; न (na) - did not; इह (iha) - here; आजयत् (ājayat) - overcome; तपः (tapaḥ) - penance.]
“That alone I remember as sin, O Dharma; I recall no other wrongdoing. Why then did my penance here meet with such a thousand-fold punishment?”
गरीयान्ब्राह्मणवधः सर्वभूतवधाद्यतः। तस्मात्त्वं किल्बिषादस्माच्छूद्रयोनौ जनिष्यसि ॥१-०५७-८०॥
garīyān brāhmaṇa-vadhaḥ sarva-bhūta-vadhāt yataḥ। tasmāt tvaṁ kilbiṣāt asmāt śūdra-yonau janiṣyasi ॥80॥
[गरीयान् (garīyān) - greater; ब्राह्मणवधः (brāhmaṇa-vadhaḥ) - slaying of a Brāhmaṇa; सर्वभूतवधात् (sarva-bhūta-vadhāt) - than killing any being; यतः (yataḥ) - because; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; त्वम् (tvam) - you; किल्बिषात् (kilbiṣāt) - for this sin; अस्मात् (asmāt) - this; शूद्रयोनौ (śūdra-yonau) - in a Śūdra womb; जनिष्यसि (janiṣyasi) - you shall be born.]
“The slaying of a Brāhmaṇa is graver than killing all beings; therefore, for this sin, you shall be born in the womb of a Śūdra.”
तेन शापेन धर्मोऽपि शूद्रयोनावजायत। विद्वान्विदुररूपेण धार्मी तनुरकिल्बिषी ॥१-०५७-८१॥
tena śāpena dharmo ’pi śūdra-yonau ajāyata। vidvān vidura-rūpeṇa dhārmī tanuḥ akilbiṣī ॥81॥
[तेन (tena) - by that; शापेन (śāpena) - curse; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - Dharma; अपि (api) - even; शूद्रयोनौ (śūdra-yonau) - in a Śūdra womb; अजायत (ajāyata) - was born; विद्वान् (vidvān) - wise; विदुररूपेण (vidura-rūpeṇa) - in the form of Vidura; धार्मी (dhārmī) - righteous; तनुः (tanuḥ) - the being; अकिल्बिषी (akilbiṣī) - sinless.]
By that curse, even Dharma was born in a Śūdra womb as the wise and righteous Vidura — a sinless being.
सञ्जयो मुनिकल्पस्तु जज्ञे सूतो गवल्गणात्। सूर्याच्च कुन्तिकन्यायां जज्ञे कर्णो महारथः॥ सहजं कवचं बिभ्रत्कुण्डलोद्द्योतिताननः ॥१-०५७-८२॥
sañjayo muni-kalpaḥ tu jajñe sūtaḥ gavalgaṇāt। sūryāt ca kunti-kanyāyāṁ jajñe karṇaḥ mahā-rathaḥ॥ sahajaṁ kavacaṁ bibhrat kuṇḍala-uddyotita-ānanaḥ ॥82॥
[सञ्जयः (sañjayaḥ) - Sañjaya; मुनिकल्पः (muni-kalpaḥ) - like a sage; तु (tu) - indeed; जज्ञे (jajñe) - was born; सूतः (sūtaḥ) - as a charioteer; गवल्गणात् (gavalgaṇāt) - from Gavalgaṇa; सूर्यात् (sūryāt) - from Sūrya; च (ca) - and; कुन्तिकन्यायाम् (kunti-kanyāyām) - in the maiden Kuntī; जज्ञे (jajñe) - was born; कर्णः (karṇaḥ) - Karṇa; महारथः (mahā-rathaḥ) - great charioteer-warrior; सहजम् (sahajam) - natural; कवचम् (kavacam) - armor; बिभ्रत् (bibhrat) - bearing; कुण्डल-उद्द्योतित-आननः (kuṇḍala-uddyotita-ānanaḥ) - with a face shining by earrings.]
Sañjaya, sage-like, was born as a charioteer from Gavalgaṇa. And from Sūrya and the maiden Kuntī, Karṇa — the great warrior — was born, bearing natural armor and a face radiant with earrings.
अनुग्रहार्थं लोकानां विष्णुर्लोकनमस्कृतः। वसुदेवात्तु देवक्यां प्रादुर्भूतो महायशाः ॥१-०५७-८३॥
anugrahārthaṁ lokānāṁ viṣṇuḥ loka-namaskṛtaḥ। vasudevāt tu devakyāṁ prādurbhūto mahā-yaśāḥ ॥83॥
[अनुग्रहार्थम् (anugrahārtham) - for the blessing; लोकानाम् (lokānām) - of the worlds; विष्णुः (viṣṇuḥ) - Viṣṇu; लोकनमस्कृतः (loka-namaskṛtaḥ) - worshiped by the worlds; वसुदेवात् (vasudevāt) - from Vasudeva; तु (tu) - indeed; देवक्याम् (devakyām) - in Devakī; प्रादुर्भूतः (prādurbhūtaḥ) - appeared; महायशाः (mahā-yaśāḥ) - of great fame.]
For the blessing of the worlds, Viṣṇu — worshiped by all — was born of Vasudeva and Devakī, appearing as one of great renown.
अनादिनिधनो देवः स कर्ता जगतः प्रभुः। अव्यक्तमक्षरं ब्रह्म प्रधानं निर्गुणात्मकम् ॥१-०५७-८४॥
anādi-nidhano devaḥ sa kartā jagataḥ prabhuḥ। avyaktam akṣaraṁ brahma pradhānaṁ nirguṇa-ātmakam ॥84॥
[अनादिनिधनः (anādi-nidhanaḥ) - without beginning or end; देवः (devaḥ) - the Lord; सः (saḥ) - he; कर्ता (kartā) - the creator; जगतः (jagataḥ) - of the universe; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - the master; अव्यक्तम् (avyaktam) - the unmanifest; अक्षरम् (akṣaram) - the imperishable; ब्रह्म (brahma) - the Absolute; प्रधानम् (pradhānam) - the primordial cause; निर्गुणात्मकम् (nirguṇa-ātmakam) - of the nature of being beyond qualities.]
He is the Lord without beginning or end, the master and creator of the universe — the unmanifest, imperishable Brahman, the primordial essence beyond attributes.
आत्मानमव्ययं चैव प्रकृतिं प्रभवं परम्। पुरुषं विश्वकर्माणं सत्त्वयोगं ध्रुवाक्षरम् ॥१-०५७-८५॥
ātmānam avyayaṁ ca eva prakṛtiṁ prabhavaṁ param। puruṣaṁ viśvakarmāṇaṁ sattva-yogaṁ dhruva-akṣaram ॥85॥
[आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - the self; अव्ययम् (avyayam) - immutable; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - also; प्रकृतिम् (prakṛtim) - nature; प्रभवम् (prabhavam) - the source; परमम् (paramam) - supreme; पुरुषम् (puruṣam) - the cosmic person; विश्वकर्माणम् (viśva-karmāṇam) - maker of the universe; सत्त्वयोगम् (sattva-yogam) - established in the mode of purity; ध्रुव-अक्षरम् (dhruva-akṣaram) - the firm and imperishable.]
He is the immutable self, the supreme source of nature, the cosmic person, the creator of the universe, established in sattva, firm and imperishable.
अनन्तमचलं देवं हंसं नारायणं प्रभुम्। धातारमजरं नित्यं तमाहुः परमव्ययम् ॥१-०५७-८६॥
anantam acalaṁ devaṁ haṁsaṁ nārāyaṇaṁ prabhum। dhātāram ajaraṁ nityaṁ tam āhuḥ parama-avyayam ॥86॥
[अनन्तम् (anantam) - infinite; अचलम् (acalam) - unmoving; देवम् (devam) - the divine; हंसम् (haṁsam) - the supreme swan (pure soul); नारायणम् (nārāyaṇam) - Nārāyaṇa; प्रभुम् (prabhum) - the Lord; धातारम् (dhātāram) - the sustainer; अजरम् (ajaram) - ageless; नित्यम् (nityam) - eternal; तम् (tam) - him; आहुः (āhuḥ) - they call; परम-अव्ययम् (parama-avyayam) - the supreme, imperishable.]
They call him the infinite, unmoving divine being — the supreme swan, Nārāyaṇa, the Lord, the sustainer, ageless, eternal, and the supreme imperishable.
पुरुषः स विभुः कर्ता सर्वभूतपितामहः। धर्मसंवर्धनार्थाय प्रजज्ञेऽन्धकवृष्णिषु ॥१-०५७-८७॥
puruṣaḥ sa vibhuḥ kartā sarva-bhūta-pitāmahaḥ। dharma-saṁvardhanārthāya prajajñe andhaka-vṛṣṇiṣu ॥87॥
[पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - the cosmic person; सः (saḥ) - he; विभुः (vibhuḥ) - all-pervading; कर्ता (kartā) - creator; सर्वभूतपितामहः (sarva-bhūta-pitāmahaḥ) - grandsire of all beings; धर्मसंवर्धनार्थाय (dharma-saṁvardhanārthāya) - for the purpose of upholding dharma; प्रजज्ञे (prajajñe) - was born; अन्धकवृष्णिषु (andhaka-vṛṣṇiṣu) - among the Andhakas and Vṛṣṇis.]
That cosmic, all-pervading creator, the grandsire of all beings, was born among the Andhakas and Vṛṣṇis for the purpose of upholding dharma.
अस्त्रज्ञौ तु महावीर्यौ सर्वशस्त्रविशारदौ। सात्यकिः कृतवर्मा च नारायणमनुव्रतौ॥ सत्यकाद्धृदिकाच्चैव जज्ञातेऽस्त्रविशारदौ ॥१-०५७-८८॥
astra-jñau tu mahā-vīryau sarva-śastra-viśāradau। sātyakiḥ kṛtavarmā ca nārāyaṇam anuvratau॥ satyakāt hṛdikāc ca eva jajñāte astra-viśāradau ॥88॥
[अस्त्रज्ञौ (astra-jñau) - skilled in weapons; तु (tu) - indeed; महावीर्यौ (mahā-vīryau) - of great prowess; सर्वशस्त्रविशारदौ (sarva-śastra-viśāradau) - experts in all arms; सात्यकिः (sātyakiḥ) - Sātyaki; कृतवर्मा (kṛtavarmā) - Kṛtavarmā; च (ca) - and; नारायणमनुव्रतौ (nārāyaṇam-anuvratau) - devoted to Nārāyaṇa; सत्यकात् (satyakāt) - from Satyaka; हृदिकात् (hṛdikāt) - and Hṛdika; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; जज्ञाते (jajñāte) - were born; अस्त्रविशारदौ (astra-viśāradau) - experts in weaponry.]
Skilled in weapons, of great might, and masters of all arms, Sātyaki and Kṛtavarmā, both devoted to Nārāyaṇa, were born respectively of Satyaka and Hṛdika, renowned for their mastery in weaponry.
भरद्वाजस्य च स्कन्नं द्रोण्यां शुक्रमवर्धत। महर्षेरुग्रतपसस्तस्माद्द्रोणो व्यजायत ॥१-०५७-८९॥
bharadvājasya ca skannaṁ droṇyāṁ śukram avardhata। maharṣeḥ ugra-tapasas tasmāt droṇaḥ vyajāyata ॥89॥
[भरद्वाजस्य (bharadvājasya) - of Bharadvāja; च (ca) - and; स्कन्नम् (skannam) - emitted; द्रोण्याम् (droṇyām) - in a vessel (Droṇī); शुक्रम् (śukram) - seed; अवर्धत (avardhata) - grew; महर्षेः (maharṣeḥ) - of the great sage; उग्रतपसः (ugra-tapasaḥ) - of severe austerity; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - from that; द्रोणः (droṇaḥ) - Droṇa; व्यजायत (vyajāyata) - was born.]
The seed of Bharadvāja, cast into a vessel (Droṇī), grew there. From that, Droṇa was born — son of the great sage of intense austerity.
गौतमान्मिथुनं जज्ञे शरस्तम्बाच्छरद्वतः। अश्वत्थाम्नश्च जननी कृपश्चैव महाबलः॥ अश्वत्थामा ततो जज्ञे द्रोणादस्त्रभृतां वरः ॥१-०५७-९०॥
gautamān mithunaṁ jajñe śara-stambhāt śarad-vataḥ। aśvatthāmnaś ca jananī kṛpaś ca eva mahā-balaḥ॥ aśvatthāmā tato jajñe droṇāt astra-bhṛtāṁ varaḥ ॥90॥
[गौतमात् (gautamāt) - from Gautama; मिथुनम् (mithunam) - a twin; जज्ञे (jajñe) - was born; शरस्तम्भात् (śara-stambhāt) - from a clump of reeds; शरद्वतः (śarad-vataḥ) - of Śaradvat; अश्वत्थाम्नः (aśvatthāmnaḥ) - of Aśvatthāman; च (ca) - and; जननी (jananī) - mother; कृपः (kṛpaḥ) - Kṛpa; च एव (ca eva) - and also; महाबलः (mahā-balaḥ) - of great strength; अश्वत्थामा (aśvatthāmā) - Aśvatthāman; ततः (tataḥ) - then; जज्ञे (jajñe) - was born; द्रोणात् (droṇāt) - from Droṇa; अस्त्रभृताम् (astra-bhṛtām) - among wielders of weapons; वरः (varaḥ) - the foremost.]
From Gautama was born a twin through a clump of reeds: Aśvatthāman’s mother and Kṛpa, of great strength. Then Aśvatthāman, the foremost among weapon-bearers, was born from Droṇa.
तथैव धृष्टद्युम्नोऽपि साक्षादग्निसमद्युतिः। वैताने कर्मणि तते पावकात्समजायत॥ वीरो द्रोणविनाशाय धनुषा सह वीर्यवान् ॥१-०५७-९१॥
tathaiva dhṛṣṭadyumno ’pi sākṣād agni-sama-dyutiḥ। vaitāne karmaṇi tate pāvakāt samajāyata॥ vīro droṇa-vināśāya dhanuṣā saha vīryavān ॥91॥
[तथैव (tathaiva) - likewise; धृष्टद्युम्नः (dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ) - Dhṛṣṭadyumna; अपि (api) - also; साक्षात् (sākṣāt) - directly; अग्निसमद्युतिः (agni-sama-dyutiḥ) - with the radiance of fire; वैताने (vaitāne) - in the Vaitāna (Vedic) rite; कर्मणि (karmaṇi) - in the sacrifice; तते (tate) - established; पावकात् (pāvakāt) - from fire; समजायत (samajāyata) - was born; वीरः (vīraḥ) - a hero; द्रोणविनाशाय (droṇa-vināśāya) - for the destruction of Droṇa; धनुषा (dhanuṣā) - with a bow; सह (saha) - with; वीर्यवान् (vīryavān) - valorous.]
Likewise, Dhṛṣṭadyumna, glowing like fire itself, was born from fire during the Vaitāna sacrifice — a mighty hero armed with a bow, born for the destruction of Droṇa.
तथैव वेद्यां कृष्णापि जज्ञे तेजस्विनी शुभा। विभ्राजमाना वपुषा बिभ्रती रूपमुत्तमम् ॥१-०५७-९२॥
tathaiva vedyāṁ kṛṣṇā api jajñe tejasvinī śubhā। vibhrājamānā vapuṣā bibhratī rūpam uttamam ॥92॥
[तथैव (tathaiva) - likewise; वेद्याम् (vedyām) - on the altar; कृष्णा (kṛṣṇā) - Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī); अपि (api) - also; जज्ञे (jajñe) - was born; तेजस्विनी (tejasvinī) - radiant; शुभा (śubhā) - auspicious; विभ्राजमाना (vibhrājamānā) - shining; वपुषा (vapuṣā) - in form; बिभ्रती (bibhratī) - bearing; रूपम् (rūpam) - appearance; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - excellent.]
Likewise, Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī), radiant and auspicious, was born on the altar, shining in beauty and bearing the most excellent form.
प्रह्रादशिष्यो नग्नजित्सुबलश्चाभवत्ततः। तस्य प्रजा धर्महन्त्री जज्ञे देवप्रकोपनात् ॥१-०५७-९३॥
prahrāda-śiṣyo nagna-jit subalaś ca abhavat tataḥ। tasya prajā dharma-hantrī jajñe deva-prakopanāt ॥93॥
[प्रह्रादशिष्यः (prahrāda-śiṣyaḥ) - disciple of Prahlāda; नग्नजित् (nagna-jit) - Nagnajit; सुबलः (subalaḥ) - Subala; च (ca) - and; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; ततः (tataḥ) - from him; तस्य (tasya) - his; प्रजा (prajā) - offspring; धर्महन्त्री (dharma-hantrī) - destroyer of dharma; जज्ञे (jajñe) - was born; देवप्रकोपनात् (deva-prakopanāt) - due to the wrath of the gods.]
Subala, disciple of Prahlāda and also called Nagnajit, was born. His daughter, who would become a destroyer of dharma, was born due to the wrath of the gods.
गान्धारराजपुत्रोऽभूच्छकुनिः सौबलस्तथा। दुर्योधनस्य माता च जज्ञातेऽर्थविदावुभौ ॥१-०५७-९४॥
gāndhāra-rāja-putro ’bhūt śakuniḥ saubalas tathā। duryodhanasya mātā ca jajñāte ’rtha-vidau ubhau ॥94॥
[गान्धारराजपुत्रः (gāndhāra-rāja-putraḥ) - son of the king of Gāndhāra; अभूत् (abhūt) - was; शकुनिः (śakuniḥ) - Śakuni; सौबलः (saubalaḥ) - son of Subala; तथा (tathā) - likewise; दुर्योधनस्य (duryodhanasya) - of Duryodhana; माता (mātā) - mother; च (ca) - and; जज्ञाते (jajñāte) - were born; अर्थविदौ (artha-vidau) - knowledgeable in worldly affairs; उभौ (ubhau) - both.]
Śakuni, son of the king of Gāndhāra and thus called Saubala, and also the mother of Duryodhana — both were born and were skilled in worldly wisdom.
कृष्णद्वैपायनाज्जज्ञे धृतराष्ट्रो जनेश्वरः। क्षेत्रे विचित्रवीर्यस्य पाण्डुश्चैव महाबलः ॥१-०५७-९५॥
kṛṣṇa-dvaipāyanāt jajñe dhṛtarāṣṭro janeśvaraḥ। kṣetre vicitra-vīryasya pāṇḍuś ca eva mahā-balaḥ ॥95॥
[कृष्णद्वैपायनात् (kṛṣṇa-dvaipāyanāt) - from Kṛṣṇa Dvaipāyana (Vyāsa); जज्ञे (jajñe) - were born; धृतराष्ट्रः (dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ) - Dhṛtarāṣṭra; जनेश्वरः (janeśvaraḥ) - lord among men; क्षेत्रे (kṣetre) - in the field (by Niyoga); विचित्रवीर्यस्य (vicitra-vīryasya) - of Vicitravīrya; पाण्डुः (pāṇḍuḥ) - Pāṇḍu; च एव (ca eva) - and also; महाबलः (mahā-balaḥ) - mighty.]
From Kṛṣṇa Dvaipāyana (Vyāsa) were born Dhṛtarāṣṭra, lord among men, and the mighty Pāṇḍu, both in the field (through Niyoga) of Vicitravīrya.
पाण्डोस्तु जज्ञिरे पञ्च पुत्रा देवसमाः पृथक्। द्वयोः स्त्रियोर्गुणज्येष्ठस्तेषामासीद्युधिष्ठिरः ॥१-०५७-९६॥
pāṇḍos tu jajñire pañca putrā deva-samāḥ pṛthak। dvayoḥ striyor guṇa-jyeṣṭhas teṣām āsīd yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ॥96॥
[पाण्डोः (pāṇḍoḥ) - of Pāṇḍu; तु (tu) - indeed; जज्ञिरे (jajñire) - were born; पञ्च (pañca) - five; पुत्राः (putrāḥ) - sons; देवसमाः (deva-samāḥ) - equal to gods; पृथक् (pṛthak) - separately (from different deities); द्वयोः (dvayoḥ) - of the two; स्त्रियः (striyaḥ) - wives; गुणज्येष्ठः (guṇa-jyeṣṭhaḥ) - eldest by virtue; तेषाम् (teṣām) - among them; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhiṣṭhira.]
From Pāṇḍu were born five sons, each equal to the gods, through his two wives; among them, Yudhiṣṭhira was the eldest in virtue.
धर्माद्युधिष्ठिरो जज्ञे मारुतात्तु वृकोदरः। इन्द्राद्धनञ्जयः श्रीमान्सर्वशस्त्रभृतां वरः ॥१-०५७-९७॥
dharmād yudhiṣṭhiro jajñe mārutāt tu vṛkodaraḥ। indrād dhanañjayaḥ śrīmān sarva-śastra-bhṛtāṁ varaḥ ॥97॥
[धर्मात् (dharmāt) - from Dharma; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhiṣṭhira; जज्ञे (jajñe) - was born; मारुतात् (mārutāt) - from Vāyu (the wind-god); तु (tu) - indeed; वृकोदरः (vṛkodaraḥ) - Bhīma; इन्द्रात् (indrāt) - from Indra; धनञ्जयः (dhanañjayaḥ) - Arjuna; श्रीमान् (śrīmān) - glorious; सर्वशस्त्रभृताम् (sarva-śastra-bhṛtām) - among all weapon bearers; वरः (varaḥ) - the foremost.]
Yudhiṣṭhira was born of Dharma; Bhīma (Vṛkodara) of Vāyu; and glorious Arjuna (Dhanañjaya), the foremost of all weapon-wielders, was born of Indra.
जज्ञाते रूपसम्पन्नावश्विभ्यां तु यमावुभौ। नकुलः सहदेवश्च गुरुशुश्रूषणे रतौ ॥१-०५७-९८॥
jajñāte rūpa-sampannāv aśvibhyāṁ tu yamāv ubhau। nakulaḥ sahadevaś ca guru-śuśrūṣaṇe ratau ॥98॥
[जज्ञाते (jajñāte) - were born; रूपसम्पन्नौ (rūpa-sampannau) - of handsome form; अश्विभ्याम् (aśvibhyām) - from the Aśvins; तु (tu) - indeed; यमौ उभौ (yamau ubhau) - the twin brothers; नकुलः (nakulaḥ) - Nakula; सहदेवः (sahadevaḥ) - Sahadeva; च (ca) - and; गुरुशुश्रूषणे (guru-śuśrūṣaṇe) - in serving the elders; रतौ (ratau) - devoted.]
The handsome twin brothers, Nakula and Sahadeva, were born of the Aśvins and were devoted to the service of their elders.
तथा पुत्रशतं जज्ञे धृतराष्ट्रस्य धीमतः। दुर्योधनप्रभृतयो युयुत्सुः करणस्तथा ॥१-०५७-९९॥
tathā putra-śataṁ jajñe dhṛtarāṣṭrasya dhīmataḥ। duryodhana-prabhṛtayo yuyutsuḥ karaṇaḥ tathā ॥99॥
[तथा (tathā) - likewise; पुत्रशतम् (putra-śatam) - a hundred sons; जज्ञे (jajñe) - were born; धृतराष्ट्रस्य (dhṛtarāṣṭrasya) - of Dhṛtarāṣṭra; धीमतः (dhīmataḥ) - the wise; दुर्योधनप्रभृतयः (duryodhana-prabhṛtayaḥ) - beginning with Duryodhana; युयुत्सुः (yuyutsuḥ) - Yuyutsu; करणः (karaṇaḥ) - Karṇa; तथा (tathā) - as well.]
Likewise, a hundred sons were born to the wise Dhṛtarāṣṭra, beginning with Duryodhana; Yuyutsu and Karṇa were also among them.
अभिमन्युः सुभद्रायामर्जुनादभ्यजायत। स्वस्रीयो वासुदेवस्य पौत्रः पाण्डोर्महात्मनः ॥१-०५७-१००॥
abhimanyuḥ subhadrāyām arjunāt abhyajāyata। svasrīyo vāsudevasya pautraḥ pāṇḍor mahā-ātmanaḥ ॥100॥
[अभिमन्युः (abhimanyuḥ) - Abhimanyu; सुभद्रायाम् (subhadrāyām) - in Subhadrā; अर्जुनात् (arjunāt) - from Arjuna; अभ्यजायत (abhyajāyata) - was born; स्वस्रीयः (svasrīyaḥ) - sister’s son; वासुदेवस्य (vāsudevasya) - of Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa); पौत्रः (pautraḥ) - grandson; पाण्डोः (pāṇḍoḥ) - of Pāṇḍu; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - the great-souled.]
Abhimanyu was born to Arjuna and Subhadrā — sister’s son of Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa), and grandson of the great-souled Pāṇḍu.
पाण्डवेभ्योऽपि पञ्चभ्यः कृष्णायां पञ्च जज्ञिरे। कुमारा रूपसम्पन्नाः सर्वशस्त्रविशारदाः ॥१-०५७-१०१॥
pāṇḍavebhyo ’pi pañcabhyāḥ kṛṣṇāyāṁ pañca jajñire। kumārā rūpa-sampannāḥ sarva-śastra-viśāradāḥ ॥101॥
[पाण्डवेभ्यः (pāṇḍavebhyaḥ) - from the five Pāṇḍavas; अपि (api) - also; पञ्चभ्यः (pañcabhyāḥ) - from the five; कृष्णायाम् (kṛṣṇāyām) - in Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī); पञ्च (pañca) - five; जज्ञिरे (jajñire) - were born; कुमाराः (kumārāḥ) - sons; रूपसम्पन्नाः (rūpa-sampannāḥ) - endowed with beauty; सर्वशस्त्रविशारदाः (sarva-śastra-viśāradāḥ) - skilled in all weapons.]
From the five Pāṇḍavas and Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī), five sons were born — princes endowed with beauty and skilled in all forms of weaponry.
प्रतिविन्ध्यो युधिष्ठिरात्सुतसोमो वृकोदरात्। अर्जुनाच्छ्रुतकीर्तिस्तु शतानीकस्तु नाकुलिः ॥१-०५७-१०२॥
prativindhyo yudhiṣṭhirāt sutasomo vṛkodarāt। arjunāt śrutakīrtis tu śatānīkas tu nākuliḥ ॥102॥
[प्रतिविन्ध्यः (prativindhyaḥ) - Prativindhya; युधिष्ठिरात् (yudhiṣṭhirāt) - from Yudhiṣṭhira; सुतसोमः (sutasomaḥ) - Sutasoma; वृकोदरात् (vṛkodarāt) - from Bhīma; अर्जुनात् (arjunāt) - from Arjuna; श्रुतकीर्तिः (śrutakīrtiḥ) - Śrutakīrti; तु (tu) - and; शतानीकः (śatānīkaḥ) - Śatānīka; तु (tu) - and; नाकुलिः (nākuliḥ) - son of Nakula.]
Prativindhya was born of Yudhiṣṭhira; Sutasoma of Bhīma; Śrutakīrti of Arjuna; and Śatānīka of Nakula.
तथैव सहदेवाच्च श्रुतसेनः प्रतापवान्। हिडिम्बायां च भीमेन वने जज्ञे घटोत्कचः ॥१-०५७-१०३॥
tathaiva sahadevāc ca śrutasenaḥ pratāpavān। hiḍimbāyāṁ ca bhīmena vane jajñe ghaṭotkacaḥ ॥103॥

Śrutasena, a mighty warrior, was born of Sahadeva; and Ghaṭotkaca was born in the forest to Bhīma through Hiḍimbā.
शिखण्डी द्रुपदाज्जज्ञे कन्या पुत्रत्वमागता। यां यक्षः पुरुषं चक्रे स्थूणः प्रियचिकीर्षया ॥१-०५७-१०४॥
śikhaṇḍī drupadāt jajñe kanyā putratvam āgatā। yāṁ yakṣaḥ puruṣaṁ cakre sthūṇaḥ priya-cikīrṣayā ॥104॥
[शिखण्डी (śikhaṇḍī) - Śikhaṇḍī; द्रुपदात् (drupadāt) - from Drupada; जज्ञे (jajñe) - was born; कन्या (kanyā) - as a daughter; पुत्रत्वम् (putratvam) - manhood; आगता (āgatā) - attained; याम् (yām) - whom; यक्षः (yakṣaḥ) - a Yakṣa; पुरुषम् (puruṣam) - male; चक्रे (cakre) - made; स्थूणः (sthūṇaḥ) - Sthūṇa (name of the Yakṣa); प्रियचिकीर्षया (priya-cikīrṣayā) - out of desire to please.]
Śikhaṇḍī was born as a daughter to Drupada but later attained manhood; the Yakṣa Sthūṇa transformed her into a male out of affection.
कुरूणां विग्रहे तस्मिन्समागच्छन्बहून्यथ। राज्ञां शतसहस्राणि योत्स्यमानानि संयुगे ॥१-०५७-१०५॥
kurūṇāṁ vigrahe tasmin samāgacchan bahūn yathā। rājñāṁ śata-sahasrāṇi yotsyamānāni saṁyuge ॥105॥
[कुरूणाम् (kurūṇām) - of the Kurus; विग्रहे (vigrahe) - in the conflict; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; समागच्छन् (samāgacchan) - assembled; बहूनि (bahūni) - many; अथ (atha) - then; राज्ञाम् (rājñām) - kings; शतसहस्राणि (śata-sahasrāṇi) - hundreds of thousands; योत्स्यमानानि (yotsyamānāni) - about to fight; संयुगे (saṁyuge) - in battle.]
In that great war of the Kurus, there assembled hundreds of thousands of kings, all prepared for battle.
तेषामपरिमेयानि नामधेयानि सर्वशः। न शक्यं परिसङ्ख्यातुं वर्षाणामयुतैरपि॥ एते तु कीर्तिता मुख्या यैराख्यानमिदं ततम् ॥१-०५७-१०६॥
teṣām aparimeyāni nāma-dheyāni sarvaśaḥ। na śakyaṁ parisaṅkhyātuṁ varṣāṇām ayutair api॥ ete tu kīrtitā mukhyā yair ākhyānam idaṁ tatam ॥106॥
