समावृत्तव्रतं तं तु विसृष्टं गुरुणा तदा। प्रस्थितं त्रिदशावासं देवयान्यब्रवीदिदम् ॥०१-७२-१॥
samāvṛttavrataṃ taṃ tu visṛṣṭaṃ guruṇā tadā। prasthitaṃ tridaśāvāsaṃ devayānyabravīdidam ॥01-72-1॥
[समावृत्त (samāvṛtta) - completed, fulfilled; व्रतम् (vratam) - vow, observance; तम् (tam) - him; तु (tu) - but, indeed; विसृष्टम् (visṛṣṭam) - dismissed, released; गुरुणा (guruṇā) - by the guru; तदा (tadā) - then; प्रस्थितम् (prasthitam) - set forth, departed; त्रिदश (tridaśa) - thirty, the gods; आवासम् (āvāsam) - abode, dwelling; देवयानी (devayānī) - Devayānī; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke, said; इदम् (idam) - this;]
(Then Devayānī spoke this to him whose vow had been completed, but who had been dismissed by the guru, set forth to the abode of the gods.)
Then Devayānī said this to him, whose vow was complete, who had been dismissed by his guru and had set out for the abode of the gods. (01-72-1)
ऋषेरङ्गिरसः पौत्र वृत्तेनाभिजनेन च। भ्राजसे विद्यया चैव तपसा च दमेन च ॥०१-७२-२॥
ṛṣeraṅgirasaḥ pautra vṛttenābhijanena ca। bhrājase vidyayā caiva tapasā ca damena ca ॥01-72-2॥
[ऋषेः (ṛṣeḥ) - of the sage; अङ्गिरसः (aṅgirasaḥ) - of Aṅgiras; पौत्र (pautra) - O grandson; वृत्तेन (vṛttena) - by conduct; अभिजनेन (abhijanena) - by noble birth; च (ca) - and; भ्राजसे (bhrājase) - you shine; विद्यया (vidyayā) - by knowledge; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; च (ca) - and; दमेन (damena) - by self-restraint; च (ca) - and;]
(O grandson of the sage Aṅgiras, by conduct and by noble birth, and indeed by knowledge, and by austerity and by self-restraint, you shine. (01-72-2))
O grandson of the sage Aṅgiras, you shine by your conduct, noble birth, knowledge, austerity, and self-restraint. (01-72-2)
ऋषिर्यथाङ्गिरा मान्यः पितुर्मम महायशाः। तथा मान्यश्च पूज्यश्च भूयो मम बृहस्पतिः ॥०१-७२-३॥
r̥ṣiryathāṅgirā mānyaḥ piturmama mahāyaśāḥ। tathā mānyaśca pūjyaśca bhūyo mama br̥haspatiḥ ॥01-72-3॥
[ऋषिः (ṛṣiḥ) - sage; यथा (yathā) - just as; अङ्गिराः (aṅgirāḥ) - Aṅgiras; मान्यः (mānyaḥ) - honorable; पितुः (pituḥ) - to the father; मम (mama) - of me, my; महायशाः (mahāyaśāḥ) - great-famed; तथा (tathā) - so, likewise; मान्यः (mānyaḥ) - honorable; च (ca) - and; पूज्यः (pūjyaḥ) - worshipful; च (ca) - and; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - more, exceedingly; मम (mama) - to me; बृहस्पतिः (bṛhaspatiḥ) - Bṛhaspati;]
(As the great-famed sage Aṅgiras is honorable to my father, so Bṛhaspati is more honorable and worshipful to me. (01-72-3))
Just as the illustrious sage Aṅgiras is honored by my father, so Bṛhaspati is even more honored and worthy of worship by me. (01-72-3)
एवं ज्ञात्वा विजानीहि यद्ब्रवीमि तपोधन। व्रतस्थे नियमोपेते यथा वर्ताम्यहं त्वयि ॥०१-७२-४॥
ēvaṁ jñātvā vijānīhi yadbravīmi tapōdhana। vratasthē niyamōpētē yathā vartāmyahaṁ tvayi ॥01-72-4॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; ज्ञात्वा (jñātvā) - having known; विजानीहि (vijānīhi) - know distinctly; यत् (yat) - what; ब्रवीमि (bravīmi) - I say; तपोधन (tapodhana) - O wealth of austerity; व्रतस्थे (vratasthe) - in one established in vows; नियमोपेते (niyamopete) - in one endowed with restraints; यथा (yathā) - how; वर्तामि (vartāmi) - I behave; अहम् (aham) - I; त्वयि (tvayi) - toward you;]
(Thus having known, know distinctly what I say, O wealth of austerity. Toward you, established in vows and endowed with restraints, how I behave.)
Knowing this, understand what I say, O ascetic rich in austerity. Learn how I conduct myself toward you, who are steadfast in vows and endowed with discipline. (01-72-4)
स समावृत्तविद्यो मां भक्तां भजितुमर्हसि। गृहाण पाणिं विधिवन्मम मन्त्रपुरस्कृतम् ॥०१-७२-५॥
sa samāvṛttavidyo māṁ bhaktāṁ bhajitumarhasi। gṛhāṇa pāṇiṁ vidhivanmama mantrapuraskṛtam ॥01-72-5॥
[स (sa) - that one, you; समावृत्तविद्यः (samāvṛttavidyaḥ) - one whose learning is completed; माम् (mām) - me; भक्ताम् (bhaktām) - devoted; भजितुम् (bhajitum) - to accept, to partake of; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought, you are worthy; गृहाण (gṛhāṇa) - take; पाणिम् (pāṇim) - hand; विधिवत् (vidhivat) - according to rule; मम (mama) - my; मन्त्रपुरस्कृतम् (mantrapuraskṛtam) - preceded or sanctified by mantras;]
(You, whose learning is completed, ought to accept me, devoted. Take my hand, according to rule, made foremost by mantras. (01-72-5))
Now that your education is complete, you ought to accept me, who am devoted to you. Take my hand in due form, sanctified by mantras. (01-72-5)

[पूज्यः (pūjyaḥ) - worthy of worship; मान्यः (mānyaḥ) - worthy of honor; च (ca) - and; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the venerable one; यथा (yathā) - as; तव (tava) - your; पिता (pitā) - father; मम (mama) - to me; तथा (tathā) - so; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अनवद्याङ्गि (anavadyāṅgi) - O faultless-limbed one; पूजनीयतरा (pūjanīyatarā) - more worthy of worship; मम (mama) - to me;]
(Worthy of worship and worthy of honor, the venerable one, as your father is to me, so you, O faultless-limbed one, are more worthy of worship to me. (01-72-6))
Just as your venerable father is worthy of worship and honor to me, so you, O faultless-limbed one, are even more worthy of worship to me. (01-72-6)
आत्मप्राणैः प्रियतमा भार्गवस्य महात्मनः। त्वं भद्रे धर्मतः पूज्या गुरुपुत्री सदा मम ॥०१-७२-७॥
ātmāprāṇaiḥ priyatamā bhārgavasya mahātmanaḥ। tvaṁ bhadre dharmataḥ pūjyā guruputrī sadā mama ॥01-72-7॥
[आत्म (ātma) - self; प्राणैः (prāṇaiḥ) - with life-breaths; प्रियतमा (priyatamā) - most beloved; भार्गवस्य (bhārgavasya) - of Bhārgava; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - of the great-souled one; त्वम् (tvam) - you; भद्रे (bhadre) - O auspicious one; धर्मतः (dharmataḥ) - according to dharma; पूज्या (pūjyā) - to be worshipped; गुरु (guru) - teacher; पुत्री (putrī) - daughter; सदा (sadā) - always; मम (mama) - of me;]
(With self and life-breaths, most beloved of the great-souled Bhārgava, you, O auspicious one, according to dharma, as the guru's daughter, are always to be worshipped by me. (01-72-7))
You are most beloved to the great-souled Bhārgava, as dear as his own life-breaths. O auspicious one, as my teacher's daughter, you are always worthy of honor from me according to dharma. (01-72-7)
यथा मम गुरुर्नित्यं मान्यः शुक्रः पिता तव। देवयानि तथैव त्वं नैवं मां वक्तुमर्हसि ॥०१-७२-८॥
yathā mama gururnityaṃ mānyaḥ śukraḥ pitā tava। devayāni tathaiva tvaṃ naivaṃ māṃ vaktumarhasi ॥01-72-8॥
[यथा (yathā) - as; मम (mama) - my; गुरुः (guruḥ) - teacher, venerable preceptor; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; मान्यः (mānyaḥ) - to be honored; शुक्रः (śukraḥ) - Śukra; पिता (pitā) - father; तव (tava) - your; देवयानि (devayāni) - O Devayānī; तथा (tathā) - so; एव (eva) - indeed; त्वम् (tvam) - you; न (na) - not; एवम् (evam) - thus; माम् (mām) - to me; वक्तुम् (vaktum) - to speak; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought;]
(As my teacher, Śukra, your father, is always to be honored, O Devayānī, so indeed you are; not thus to me you ought to speak. (01-72-8))
Just as my teacher, Śukra, your father, is always worthy of honor, so indeed are you, O Devayānī. You should not speak to me in this way. (01-72-8)

गुरुपुत्रस्य पुत्रो वै न तु त्वमसि मे पितुः। तस्मान्मान्यश्च पूज्यश्च ममापि त्वं द्विजोत्तम ॥०१-७२-९॥
guruputrasya putro vai na tu tvamasi me pituḥ। tasmānmānyaśca pūjyaśca mamāpi tvaṁ dvijottama ॥01-72-9॥
[गुरु (guru) - preceptor; पुत्रस्य (putrasya) - of the son; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; वै (vai) - indeed; न (na) - not; तु (tu) - but; त्वम् (tvam) - you; असि (asi) - are; मे (me) - my; पितुः (pituḥ) - of the father; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; मान्यः (mānyaḥ) - worthy of honor; च (ca) - and; पूज्यः (pūjyaḥ) - worthy of worship; च (ca) - and; मम (mama) - of me; अपि (api) - also; त्वम् (tvam) - you; द्विज (dvija) - twice-born; उत्तम (uttama) - best;]
(Of the preceptor's son, you are indeed the son, but you are not of my father. Therefore, honorable and worshipable by me also you are, O best of the twice-born. (01-72-9))
You are indeed the son of the preceptor's son, but you are not my father's son. Therefore, O best of the twice-born, you are worthy of honor and worship even by me. (01-72-9)
असुरैर्हन्यमाने च कच त्वयि पुनः पुनः। तदा प्रभृति या प्रीतिस्तां त्वमेव स्मरस्व मे ॥०१-७२-१०॥
asurairhanyamāne ca kaca tvayi punaḥ punaḥ। tadā prabhṛti yā prītistāṃ tvameva smarasva me ॥01-72-10॥
[असुरैः (asuraiḥ) - by the Asuras; हन्यमाने (hanyamāne) - being killed; च (ca) - and; कच (kaca) - O Kaca; त्वयि (tvayi) - in you, when you; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; तदा (tadā) - then; प्रभृति (prabhṛti) - from the beginning, thenceforth; या (yā) - which; प्रीतिः (prītiḥ) - affection; ताम् (tām) - that; त्वम् (tvam) - you; एव (eva) - indeed, yourself; स्मरस्व (smarasva) - remember; मे (me) - of me, my;]
(And, O Kaca, while you were being killed by the Asuras again and again, from then onward, the affection which was mine, that you yourself remember.)
And, O Kaca, when you were being killed again and again by the Asuras, the affection I have had from then onward, you yourself should remember.
सौहार्दे चानुरागे च वेत्थ मे भक्तिमुत्तमाम्। न मामर्हसि धर्मज्ञ त्यक्तुं भक्तामनागसम् ॥०१-७२-११॥
sauhārde cānurāge ca vettha me bhaktimuttamām। na māmarhasi dharmajña tyaktuṃ bhaktāmanāgasam ॥01-72-11॥
[सौहार्दे (sauhārde) - in friendship; च (ca) - and; अनुरागे (anurāge) - in affection; च (ca) - and; वेत्थ (vettha) - you know; मे (me) - my; भक्तिम् (bhaktim) - devotion; उत्तमाम् (uttamām) - highest; न (na) - not; माम् (mām) - me; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought; धर्मज्ञ (dharmajña) - knower of dharma; त्यक्तुम् (tyaktum) - to abandon; भक्ताम् (bhaktām) - devoted; अनागसम् (anāgasam) - faultless;]
(In friendship and in affection, you know my highest devotion. You ought not, O knower of dharma, to abandon me, devoted and faultless.)
You know my highest devotion in friendship and affection. O knower of dharma, you should not abandon me, devoted and faultless. (01-72-11)

अनियोज्ये नियोगे मां नियुनक्षि शुभव्रते। प्रसीद सुभ्रु त्वं मह्यं गुरोर्गुरुतरी शुभे ॥०१-७२-१२॥
aniyojye niyoge māṃ niyunakṣi śubhavrate। prasīda subhru tvaṃ mahyaṃ gurorgurutarī śubhe ॥01-72-12॥
[अनियोज्ये (aniyojye) - in what is not to be appointed or enjoined; नियोगे (niyoge) - in an appointment, injunction, or commission; मां (māṃ) - me; नियुनक्षि (niyunakṣi) - you appoint, enjoin, or engage; शुभव्रते (śubhavrate) - O one of auspicious vows; प्रसीद (prasīda) - be gracious; सुभ्रु (subhru) - O fair-browed one; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; मह्यं (mahyaṃ) - to me; गुरोः (guroḥ) - than a guru, than a venerable elder; गुरुतरी (gurutarī) - more venerable, weightier; शुभे (śubhe) - O auspicious one;]
(In an unappointable appointment you appoint me, O auspicious-vowed one. Be gracious, O fair-browed one, you, to me, O one more venerable than a guru, O auspicious one. (01-72-12))
You are enjoining me in a commission that ought not to be assigned, O woman of auspicious vows. Be gracious to me, O fair-browed one, O auspicious one more venerable than a guru. (01-72-12)
यत्रोषितं विशालाक्षि त्वया चन्द्रनिभानने। तत्राहमुषितो भद्रे कुक्षौ काव्यस्य भामिनि ॥०१-७२-१३॥
yatroṣitaṁ viśālākṣi tvayā candranibhānane। tatrāhamuṣito bhadre kukṣau kāvyasya bhāmini ॥01-72-13॥
[यत्र (yatra) - where; उषितम् (uṣitam) - dwelt, stayed; विशालाक्षि (viśālākṣi) - O wide-eyed one; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; चन्द्रनिभानने (candranibhānane) - O moon-like-faced one; तत्र (tatra) - there; अहम् (aham) - I; उषितः (uṣitaḥ) - dwelt, stayed; भद्रे (bhadre) - O blessed one; कुक्षौ (kukṣau) - in the womb; काव्यस्य (kāvyasya) - of Kāvya; भामिनि (bhāmini) - O radiant woman;]
(Where it was dwelt by you, O wide-eyed one, O moon-like-faced one, there I dwelt, O blessed one, in the womb of Kāvya, O radiant woman. (01-72-13))
O wide-eyed, moon-faced one, wherever you stayed, I too stayed there, O blessed radiant lady, in Kāvya’s womb. (01-72-13)
भगिनी धर्मतो मे त्वं मैवं वोचः शुभानने। सुखमस्म्युषितो भद्रे न मन्युर्विद्यते मम ॥०१-७२-१४॥
bhaginī dharmato me tvaṁ maivaṁ vocaḥ śubhānane। sukhamasmyuṣito bhadre na manyurvidyate mama ॥01-72-14॥
[भगिनी (bhaginī) - sister; धर्मतः (dharmataḥ) - according to dharma; मे (me) - my; त्वम् (tvam) - you; मा (mā) - do not; एवम् (evam) - thus; वोचः (vocaḥ) - speak; शुभानने (śubhānane) - O fair-faced one; सुखम् (sukham) - happily; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; उषितः (uṣitaḥ) - dwelt; भद्रे (bhadre) - O blessed one; न (na) - not; मन्युः (manyuḥ) - anger; विद्यते (vidyate) - exists; मम (mama) - of me;]
(O fair-faced one, you are my sister according to dharma; do not speak thus. O blessed one, I have dwelt happily; there is no anger in me.)
O fair-faced one, you are my sister by dharma; do not speak so. O blessed one, I have stayed happily, and I have no anger. (01-72-14)
आपृच्छे त्वां गमिष्यामि शिवमाशंस मे पथि। अविरोधेन धर्मस्य स्मर्तव्योऽस्मि कथान्तरे ॥ अप्रमत्तोत्थिता नित्यमाराधय गुरुं मम ॥०१-७२-१५॥
āpṛcche tvāṃ gamiṣyāmi śivamāśaṃsa me pathi। avirodhena dharmasya smartavyo'smi kathāntare ॥ apramattotthitā nityamārādhaya guruṃ mama ॥01-72-15॥
[आपृच्छे (āpṛcche) - I take leave; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; गमिष्यामि (gamiṣyāmi) - I shall go; शिवम् (śivam) - auspiciousness; आशंस (āśaṃsa) - wish; मे (me) - for me; पथि (pathi) - on the path; अविरोधेन (avirodhena) - without opposition; धर्मस्य (dharmasya) - of dharma; स्मर्तव्यः (smartavyaḥ) - to be remembered; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; कथा-अन्तरे (kathā-antare) - at another occasion of discourse; अप्रमत्ता (apramattā) - not negligent; उत्थिता (utthitā) - risen; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; आराधय (ārādhaya) - serve; गुरुम् (gurum) - guru; मम (mama) - my;]
(I take leave of you; I shall go. Wish auspiciousness for me on the path. Without opposition to dharma, I am to be remembered at another occasion of discourse. Having risen without negligence, always serve my guru.)
I take leave of you and shall depart. Wish me well on the path. In a manner not opposed to dharma, remember me on another occasion of discourse. Rise diligently and always serve my guru. (01-72-15)

यदि मां धर्मकामार्थे प्रत्याख्यास्यसि चोदितः। ततः कच न ते विद्या सिद्धिमेषा गमिष्यति ॥०१-७२-१६॥
yadi māṃ dharmakāmārthe pratyākhyāsyasi coditaḥ। tataḥ kaca na te vidyā siddhimeṣā gamiṣyati ॥01-72-16॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; मां (māṃ) - me; धर्म-काम-अर्थे (dharma-kāma-arthe) - in the matter of duty, desire, and wealth; प्रत्याख्यास्यसि (pratyākhyāsyasi) - you will reject; चोदितः (coditaḥ) - urged; ततः (tataḥ) - then; कच (kaca) - O Kaca; न (na) - not; ते (te) - for you; विद्या (vidyā) - knowledge; सिद्धिम् (siddhim) - accomplishment; एषा (eṣā) - this; गमिष्यति (gamiṣyati) - will go to;]
(If me, in the matter of dharma, desire, and wealth, you will reject, though urged, then, O Kaca, not for you will this knowledge go to accomplishment.)
If, when urged, you reject me in matters of duty, desire, and wealth, then, O Kaca, this knowledge of yours will not attain perfection. (01-72-16)

गुरुपुत्रीति कृत्वाहं प्रत्याचक्षे न दोषतः। गुरुणा चाभ्यनुज्ञातः काममेवं शपस्व माम् ॥०१-७२-१७॥
guruputrīti kṛtvāhaṃ pratyācakṣe na doṣataḥ। guruṇā cābhyanujñātaḥ kāmamevaṃ śapasva mām ॥01-72-17॥
[गुरुपुत्री (guruputrī) - guru's daughter; इति (iti) - thus; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made, having considered; अहम् (aham) - I; प्रत्याचक्षे (pratyācakṣe) - I reject, I refuse; न (na) - not; दोषतः (doṣataḥ) - because of fault; गुरुणा (guruṇā) - by the guru; च (ca) - and; अभ्यनुज्ञातः (abhyanujñātaḥ) - permitted, consented to; कामम् (kāmam) - at will, as desired; एवम् (evam) - thus; शपस्व (śapasva) - curse; माम् (mām) - me;]
(Having considered "guru's daughter," I reject, not because of fault. And, having been permitted by the guru, as you wish, thus curse me. (01-72-17))
I refuse you not because of any fault, but because I consider you the guru's daughter. And since I have been permitted by the guru, curse me as you wish. (01-72-17)
आर्षं धर्मं ब्रुवाणोऽहं देवयानि यथा त्वया। शप्तो नार्होऽस्मि शापस्य कामतोऽद्य न धर्मतः ॥०१-७२-१८॥
ārṣaṃ dharmaṃ bruvāṇo'haṃ devayāni yathā tvayā। śapto nārho'smi śāpasya kāmato'dya na dharmataḥ ॥01-72-18॥
[आर्षं (ārṣaṃ) - pertaining to the ṛṣis; धर्मं (dharmaṃ) - dharma, righteous law; ब्रुवाणः (bruvāṇaḥ) - speaking; अहम् (aham) - I; देवयानि (devayāni) - O Devayānī; यथा (yathā) - as; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; शप्तः (śaptaḥ) - cursed; न (na) - not; अर्हः (arhaḥ) - deserving; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; शापस्य (śāpasya) - of the curse; कामतः (kāmataḥ) - from desire; अद्य (adya) - today; न (na) - not; धर्मतः (dharmataḥ) - from dharma;]
(O Devayānī, I, speaking the dharma pertaining to the ṛṣis, as cursed by you, am not deserving of the curse, today from desire, not from dharma.)
O Devayānī, while I was speaking the dharma of the seers, you cursed me. I am not deserving of this curse; it was given today out of desire, not in accordance with dharma. (01-72-18)
तस्माद्भवत्या यः कामो न तथा स भविष्यति। ऋषिपुत्रो न ते कश्चिज्जातु पाणिं ग्रहीष्यति ॥०१-७२-१९॥
tasmādbhavatyā yaḥ kāmo na tathā sa bhaviṣyati। ṛṣiputro na te kaścijjātu pāṇiṃ grahīṣyati ॥01-72-19॥
[तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; भवत्या (bhavatyā) - by you, lady; यः (yaḥ) - which; कामः (kāmaḥ) - desire; न (na) - not; तथा (tathā) - in that way; सः (saḥ) - that; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will become; ऋषि-पुत्रः (ṛṣi-putraḥ) - son of a seer; न (na) - not; ते (te) - your; कश्चित् (kaścit) - anyone; जातु (jātu) - ever; पाणिम् (pāṇim) - hand; ग्रहीष्यति (grahīṣyati) - will take;]
(Therefore, by you, which desire, not in that way will that happen. No son of a seer will ever take your hand.)
Therefore, the desire you have will not come to pass in that way. No son of a seer will ever take your hand in marriage. (01-72-19)
फलिष्यति न ते विद्या यत्त्वं मामात्थ तत्तथा। अध्यापयिष्यामि तु यं तस्य विद्या फलिष्यति ॥०१-७२-२०॥
phaliṣyati na te vidyā yattvaṃ māmāttha tattathā। adhyāpayiṣyāmi tu yaṃ tasya vidyā phaliṣyati ॥01-72-20॥
[फलिष्यति (phaliṣyati) - will bear fruit; न (na) - not; ते (te) - for you; विद्या (vidyā) - knowledge; यत् (yat) - what; त्वम् (tvam) - you; माम् (mām) - to me; आत्थ (āttha) - said; तत् (tat) - that; तथा (tathā) - so; अध्यापयिष्यामि (adhyāpayiṣyāmi) - I shall teach; तु (tu) - but; यम् (yam) - whom; तस्य (tasya) - his; विद्या (vidyā) - knowledge; फलिष्यति (phaliṣyati) - will bear fruit;]
(Not for you will the knowledge bear fruit; what you said to me, that is so. But whom I shall teach, his knowledge will bear fruit.)
Your knowledge will not bear fruit; what you said to me is true. But the one whom I shall teach, his knowledge will bear fruit. (01-72-20)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

एवमुक्त्वा द्विजश्रेष्ठो देवयानीं कचस्तदा। त्रिदशेशालयं शीघ्रं जगाम द्विजसत्तमः ॥०१-७२-२१॥
evamuktvā dvijaśreṣṭho devayānīṃ kacastadā। tridaśeśālayaṃ śīghraṃ jagāma dvijasattamaḥ ॥01-72-21॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; द्विज-श्रेष्ठः (dvija-śreṣṭhaḥ) - best among the twice-born; देवयानीम् (devayānīm) - Devayānī; कचः (kacaḥ) - Kaca; तदा (tadā) - then; त्रिदश-ईश-आलयम् (tridaśa-īśa-ālayam) - the abode of the lord of the thirty gods; शीघ्रम् (śīghram) - quickly; जगाम (jagāma) - went; द्विज-सत्तमः (dvija-sattamaḥ) - foremost among the twice-born;]
(Having spoken thus, the best of the twice-born, Kaca, then swiftly went to Devayānī, to the abode of the lord of the thirty gods, the foremost of the twice-born.)
Having said this to Devayānī, Kaca, the best of the twice-born, quickly went to the abode of the lord of the gods, that foremost of Brahmins. (01-72-21)
तमागतमभिप्रेक्ष्य देवा इन्द्रपुरोगमाः। बृहस्पतिं सभाज्येदं कचमाहुर्मुदान्विताः ॥०१-७२-२२॥
tamāgatamabhiprekṣya devā indrapurogamāḥ। bṛhaspatiṃ sabhājyedaṃ kacamāhurmudānvitāḥ ॥01-72-22॥
[तम् (tam) - him; आगतम् (āgatam) - come, arrived; अभिप्रेक्ष्य (abhiprekṣya) - having looked upon, having seen; देवाः (devāḥ) - the gods; इन्द्रपुरोगमाः (indrapurogamāḥ) - having Indra as foremost; बृहस्पतिम् (bṛhaspatim) - Bṛhaspati; सभाज्य (sabhājya) - having honored; इदम् (idam) - this; कचम् (kacam) - to Kaca; आहुः (āhuḥ) - they said; मुदा (mudā) - with joy; अन्विताः (anvitāḥ) - endowed, accompanied;]
(Him arrived having beheld, the gods with Indra as foremost, having honored Bṛhaspati, this to Kaca said, endowed with joy. (01-72-22))
Seeing that he had arrived, the gods, with Indra at their head, honored Bṛhaspati and joyfully said this to Kaca. (01-72-22)
यत्त्वमस्मद्धितं कर्म चकर्थ परमाद्भुतम्। न ते यशः प्रणशिता भागभाङ्नो भविष्यसि ॥०१-७२-२३॥
yattvamasmaddhitaṃ karma cakartha paramādbhutam। na te yaśaḥ praṇaśitā bhāgabhāṅno bhaviṣyasi ॥01-72-23॥
[यत् (yat) - because; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अस्मत्-हितम् (asmat-hitam) - beneficial to us; कर्म (karma) - deed; चकर्थ (cakartha) - you did; परम-अद्भुतम् (parama-adbhutam) - supremely wondrous; न (na) - not; ते (te) - your; यशः (yaśaḥ) - fame; प्रणशिता (praṇaśitā) - will perish; भागभाक् (bhāgabhāk) - sharer of a portion; नः (naḥ) - of us; भविष्यसि (bhaviṣyasi) - you will be;]
(Because you did, for our benefit, a deed supremely wondrous, your fame will not perish; you will be a sharer of our portion. (01-72-23))
Because you have performed a supremely wondrous deed for our benefit, your fame will not perish; you will have a share with us. (01-72-23)
