वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

कृतविद्ये कचे प्राप्ते हृष्टरूपा दिवौकसः। कचादधीत्य तां विद्यां कृतार्था भरतर्षभ ॥०१-७३-१॥
kṛtavidye kace prāpte hṛṣṭarūpā divaukasaḥ। kacādadhītya tāṃ vidyāṃ kṛtārthā bharatarṣabha ॥01-73-1॥
[कृत + विद्ये (kṛta + vidye) - with the knowledge acquired/accomplished; कचे (kace) - in Kaca; प्राप्ते (prāpte) - having arrived; हृष्टरूपाः (hṛṣṭarūpāḥ) - having delighted forms; दिवौकसः (divaukasaḥ) - the dwellers in heaven; कचात् (kacāt) - from Kaca; अधीत्य (adhītya) - having learned; ताम् (tām) - that; विद्याम् (vidyām) - knowledge; कृतार्थाः (kṛtārthāḥ) - having accomplished their purpose; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O bull among the Bharatas;]
(When Kaca, with the knowledge acquired, had arrived, the dwellers in heaven were of delighted form. Having learned that knowledge from Kaca, they were fulfilled in purpose, O bull of the Bharatas. (01-73-1))
When Kaca returned after acquiring the knowledge, the gods were delighted. Having learned that knowledge from Kaca, they had accomplished their purpose, O bull among the Bharatas. (01-73-1)
सर्व एव समागम्य शतक्रतुमथाब्रुवन्। कालस्ते विक्रमस्याद्य जहि शत्रून्पुरंदर ॥०१-७३-२॥
sarva eva samāgamya śatakratumathābruvan। kālaste vikramasyādya jahi śatrūnpurandara ॥01-73-2॥
[सर्व (sarva) - all; एव (eva) - indeed; समागम्य (samāgamya) - having come together; शतक्रतुम् (śatakratum) - Śatakratu, Indra; अथ (atha) - then; अब्रुवन् (abruvan) - they said; कालः (kālaḥ) - time, occasion; ते (te) - for you, your; विक्रमस्य (vikramasya) - of valor, of heroic stride; अद्य (adya) - today, now; जहि (jahi) - slay; शत्रून् (śatrūn) - enemies; पुरंदर (purandara) - O destroyer of forts;]
(All indeed, having come together, then said to Śatakratu: "today is the time of your valor; slay the enemies, O Purandara.")
All of them assembled and then said to Śatakratu, "Today is the occasion for your valor; slay the enemies, O Purandara." (01-73-2)
एवमुक्तस्तु सहितैस्त्रिदशैर्मघवांस्तदा। तथेत्युक्त्वोपचक्राम सोऽपश्यत वने स्त्रियः ॥०१-७३-३॥
evamuktastu sahitaistridaśairmaghavāṃstadā। tathetyuktvopacakrāma so'paśyata vane striyaḥ ॥01-73-3॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - addressed, spoken to; तु (tu) - however; सहितैः (sahitaiḥ) - assembled, joined together; त्रिदशैः (tridaśaiḥ) - by the gods; मघवान् (maghavān) - Maghavan, Indra; तदा (tadā) - then; तथा (tathā) - so, thus; इति (iti) - thus, so said; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having said; उपचक्राम (upacakrāma) - approached; सः (saḥ) - he; अपश्यत (apaśyata) - saw; वने (vane) - in the forest; स्त्रियः (striyaḥ) - women;]
(Thus addressed, however, by the assembled gods, Maghavan then, having said 'So be it', approached; he saw women in the forest. (01-73-3))

क्रीडन्तीनां तु कन्यानां वने चैत्ररथोपमे। वायुभूतः स वस्त्राणि सर्वाण्येव व्यमिश्रयत् ॥०१-७३-४॥
krīḍantīnāṃ tu kanyānāṃ vane caitrarathopame। vāyubhūtaḥ sa vastrāṇi sarvāṇyeva vyamiśrayat ॥01-73-4॥
[क्रीडन्तीनाम् (krīḍantīnām) - of those playing; तु (tu) - but; कन्यानाम् (kanyānām) - of the maidens; वने (vane) - in the forest; चैत्ररथ-उपमे (caitraratha-upame) - resembling Caitraratha; वायु-भूतः (vāyu-bhūtaḥ) - having become wind; सः (saḥ) - he; वस्त्राणि (vastrāṇi) - garments; सर्वाणि (sarvāṇi) - all; एव (eva) - indeed; व्यमिश्रयत् (vyamiśrayat) - mixed up;]
(But of the maidens playing in the forest resembling Caitraratha, he, having become wind, mixed up all the garments indeed. (01-73-4))
But while the maidens were playing in a forest like Caitraratha, he became the wind and mixed up all their garments. (01-73-4)
ततो जलात्समुत्तीर्य कन्यास्ताः सहितास्तदा। वस्त्राणि जगृहुस्तानि यथासन्नान्यनेकशः ॥०१-७३-५॥
tato jalātsamuttīrya kanyāstāḥ sahitāstadā। vastrāṇi jagṛhustāni yathāsannānyanekaśaḥ ॥01-73-5॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; जलात् (jalāt) - from the water; समुत्तीर्य (samuttīrya) - having completely come up out; कन्याः (kanyāḥ) - maidens; ताः (tāḥ) - those; सहिताः (sahitāḥ) - together; तदा (tadā) - then; वस्त्राणि (vastrāṇi) - garments; जगृहुः (jagṛhuḥ) - took; तानि (tāni) - those; यथासन्नानि (yathāsannāni) - as they were near; अनेकशः (anekaśaḥ) - in many ways;]
(Then, having come up out from the water, those maidens, together then, took those garments, as they were near, in many ways. (01-73-5))

तत्र वासो देवयान्याः शर्मिष्ठा जगृहे तदा। व्यतिमिश्रमजानन्ती दुहिता वृषपर्वणः ॥०१-७३-६॥
tatra vāso devayānyāḥ śarmiṣṭhā jagṛhe tadā। vyatimiśramajānantī duhitā vṛṣaparvaṇaḥ ॥01-73-6॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; वासः (vāsaḥ) - garment; देवयान्याः (devayānyāḥ) - of Devayānī; शर्मिष्ठा (śarmiṣṭhā) - Śarmiṣṭhā; जगृहे (jagṛhe) - took; तदा (tadā) - then; व्यतिमिश्रम् (vyatimiśram) - mixed up; अजानन्ती (ajānantī) - not knowing; दुहिता (duhitā) - daughter; वृषपर्वणः (vṛṣaparvaṇaḥ) - of Vṛṣaparvan;]
(There, the garment of Devayānī, Śarmiṣṭhā took then, not knowing it to be mixed up, the daughter of Vṛṣaparvan.)
Then Śarmiṣṭhā, the daughter of Vṛṣaparvan, not knowing it was mixed up, took Devayānī’s garment there. (01-73-6)
ततस्तयोर्मिथस्तत्र विरोधः समजायत। देवयान्याश्च राजेन्द्र शर्मिष्ठायाश्च तत्कृते ॥०१-७३-७॥
tatastayormithastatra virodhaḥ samajāyata। devayānyāśca rājendra śarmiṣṭhāyāśca tatkṛte ॥01-73-7॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; तयोः (tayoḥ) - of those two; मिथः (mithaḥ) - mutually; तत्र (tatra) - there; विरोधः (virodhaḥ) - opposition; समजायत (samajāyata) - arose; देवयान्याः (devayānyāḥ) - of Devayānī; च (ca) - and; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O lord of kings; शर्मिष्ठायाः (śarmiṣṭhāyāḥ) - of Śarmiṣṭhā; च (ca) - and; तत्कृते (tatkṛte) - on account of that;]
(Thereafter, of those two, mutually, there, a conflict arose, of Devayānī and, O king-lord, of Śarmiṣṭhā and, on account of that. (01-73-7))
Then, because of that, a mutual conflict arose there between Devayānī and Śarmiṣṭhā, O lord of kings. (01-73-7)

कस्माद्गृह्णासि मे वस्त्रं शिष्या भूत्वा ममासुरि। समुदाचारहीनाया न ते श्रेयो भविष्यति ॥०१-७३-८॥
kasmādgṛhṇāsi me vastraṃ śiṣyā bhūtvā mamāsuri। samudācārahīnāyā na te śreyo bhaviṣyati ॥01-73-8॥
[कस्मात् (kasmāt) - from what reason, why; गृह्णासि (gṛhṇāsi) - you take, you seize; मे (me) - my, of me; वस्त्रम् (vastram) - garment, clothing; शिष्या (śiṣyā) - female disciple, pupil; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; मम (mama) - my, of me; आसुरि (āsuri) - O Āsuri; समुदाचार (samudācāra) - proper conduct, established good custom; हीनायाः (hīnāyāḥ) - of one bereft, of one deprived; न (na) - not; ते (te) - for you, your; श्रेयः (śreyaḥ) - welfare, higher good; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be, will become;]
(From what reason do you take my garment, having become my disciple, O Āsuri? For you, bereft of proper conduct, welfare will not be.)
Why do you take my garment after becoming my disciple, O Āsuri? For you, who are devoid of proper conduct, there will be no welfare. (01-73-8)
शर्मिष्ठोवाच॥

आसीनं च शयानं च पिता ते पितरं मम। स्तौति वन्दति चाभीक्ष्णं नीचैः स्थित्वा विनीतवत् ॥०१-७३-९॥
āsīnaṁ ca śayānaṁ ca pitā te pitaraṁ mama। stauti vandati cābhīkṣṇaṁ nīcaiḥ sthitvā vinītavat ॥01-73-9॥
[आसीनम् (āsīnam) - seated; च (ca) - and; शयानम् (śayānam) - lying down; च (ca) - and; पिता (pitā) - father; ते (te) - your; पितरम् (pitaram) - father; मम (mama) - my; स्तौति (stauti) - praises; वन्दति (vandati) - salutes; च (ca) - and; अभीक्ष्णम् (abhīkṣṇam) - repeatedly; नीचैः (nīcaiḥ) - lowly; स्थित्वा (sthitvā) - having stood; विनीतवत् (vinītavat) - like a disciplined one;]
(And seated and lying down, your father repeatedly praises and salutes my father, having stood lowly, like a humble one. (01-73-9))
Your father repeatedly praises and salutes my father, whether he is seated or lying down, standing humbly below like a disciplined person. (01-73-9)
याचतस्त्वं हि दुहिता स्तुवतः प्रतिगृह्णतः। सुताहं स्तूयमानस्य ददतोऽप्रतिगृह्णतः ॥०१-७३-१०॥
yācatastvaṁ hi duhitā stuvataḥ pratigṛhṇataḥ। sutāhaṁ stūyamānasya dadato'pratigṛhṇataḥ ॥01-73-10॥
[याचतः (yācataḥ) - of one who asks or begs; त्वम् (tvam) - you; हि (hi) - indeed; दुहिता (duhitā) - daughter; स्तुवतः (stuvataḥ) - of one who praises; प्रतिगृह्णतः (pratigṛhṇataḥ) - of one who receives or accepts; सुता (sutā) - daughter; अहम् (aham) - I; स्तूयमानस्य (stūyamānasya) - of one being praised; ददतः (dadataḥ) - of one giving; अप्रतिगृह्णतः (apratigṛhṇataḥ) - of one not receiving or not accepting;]
(Of one who begs, indeed you are the daughter, of one who praises, of one who accepts; I am the daughter of one being praised, of one giving, of one not accepting. (01-73-10))
You are indeed the daughter of one who begs, praises, and accepts gifts; I am the daughter of one who is praised, gives, and does not accept gifts. (01-73-10)
अनायुधा सायुधाया रिक्ता क्षुभ्यसि भिक्षुकि। लप्स्यसे प्रतियोद्धारं न हि त्वां गणयाम्यहम् ॥०१-७३-११॥
anāyudhā sāyudhāyā riktā kṣubhyasi bhikṣuki। lapsyase pratiyoddhāraṁ na hi tvāṁ gaṇayāmyaham ॥01-73-11॥
[अनायुधा (anāyudhā) - weaponless; सायुधायाः (sāyudhāyāḥ) - before an armed one; रिक्ता (riktā) - empty-handed; क्षुभ्यसि (kṣubhyasi) - you tremble; भिक्षुकि (bhikṣuki) - O mendicant-woman; लप्स्यसे (lapsyase) - you will obtain; प्रतियोद्धारम् (pratiyoddhāram) - a counter-fighter; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; गणयामि (gaṇayāmi) - I count; अहम् (aham) - I;]
(Unarmed, before an armed one empty-handed, you tremble, O mendicant-woman. You will obtain a counter-fighter; for I indeed do not count you.)
Unarmed and empty-handed before an armed woman, you tremble, O mendicant. You will find an opponent, for I do not consider you worth reckoning. (01-73-11)

समुच्छ्रयं देवयानीं गतां सक्तां च वाससि। शर्मिष्ठा प्राक्षिपत्कूपे ततः स्वपुरमाव्रजत् ॥०१-७३-१२॥
samucchrayaṃ devayānīṃ gatāṃ saktāṃ ca vāsasi। śarmiṣṭhā prākṣipatkūpe tataḥ svapuramāvrajat ॥01-73-12॥
[समुच्छ्रयम् (samucchrayam) - elevation, raised place; देवयानीम् (devayānīm) - Devayānī; गताम् (gatām) - gone, reached; सक्ताम् (saktām) - attached, clinging; च (ca) - and; वाससि (vāsasi) - in the garment; शर्मिष्ठा (śarmiṣṭhā) - Śarmiṣṭhā; प्राक्षिपत् (prākṣipat) - threw, cast; कूपे (kūpe) - into a well; ततः (tataḥ) - then, from there; स्वपुरम् (svapuram) - own city; आव्रजत् (āvrajat) - went back, returned;]
(Śarmiṣṭhā threw Devayānī, who had gone to the elevation and was clinging in the garment, into a well; then she went back to her own city. (01-73-12))
Śarmiṣṭhā threw Devayānī, who had reached the raised place and was caught in her garment, into a well. Then she returned to her own city. (01-73-12)
हतेयमिति विज्ञाय शर्मिष्ठा पापनिश्चया। अनवेक्ष्य ययौ वेश्म क्रोधवेगपरायणा ॥०१-७३-१३॥
hateyamiti vijñāya śarmiṣṭhā pāpaniścayā। anavekṣya yayau veśma krodhavegaparāyaṇā ॥01-73-13॥
[हता (hatā) - slain; इयम् (iyam) - this one; इति (iti) - thus; विज्ञाय (vijñāya) - having understood; शर्मिष्ठा (śarmiṣṭhā) - Śarmiṣṭhā; पाप (pāpa) - sinful; निश्चया (niścayā) - having resolve; अनवेक्ष्य (anavekṣya) - without looking back; ययौ (yayau) - went; वेश्म (veśma) - to the house; क्रोध (krodha) - anger; वेग (vega) - force; परायणा (parāyaṇā) - given over to;]
(Having understood, "this one is slain," Śarmiṣṭhā, of sinful resolve, without looking back, went to the house, given over to the force of anger.)
Knowing, "this one is dead," Śarmiṣṭhā, set on evil, went home without looking back, carried away by the force of anger. (01-73-13)
अथ तं देशमभ्यागाद्ययातिर्नहुषात्मजः। श्रान्तयुग्यः श्रान्तहयो मृगलिप्सुः पिपासितः ॥०१-७३-१४॥
atha taṃ deśamabhyāgādyayātirnahuṣātmajaḥ। śrāntayugyaḥ śrāntahayo mṛgalipsuḥ pipāsitaḥ ॥01-73-14॥
[अथ (atha) - then; तम् (tam) - that; देशम् (deśam) - region; अभ्यागात् (abhyāgāt) - approached; ययातिः (yayātiḥ) - Yayāti; नहुष-आत्मजः (nahuṣa-ātmajaḥ) - son of Nahuṣa; श्रान्त-युग्यः (śrānta-yugyaḥ) - having wearied yoke-animals; श्रान्त-हयः (śrānta-hayaḥ) - having wearied horses; मृग-लिप्सुः (mṛga-lipsuḥ) - desirous of obtaining deer; पिपासितः (pipāsitaḥ) - thirsty;]
(Then Yayāti, the son of Nahuṣa, approached that region, having weary yoke-animals, having weary horses, desirous of deer, and thirsty. (01-73-14))
Then Yayāti, the son of Nahuṣa, came to that region. His team and horses were exhausted; he was hunting deer and was thirsty. (01-73-14)
स नाहुषः प्रेक्षमाण उदपानं गतोदकम्। ददर्श कन्यां तां तत्र दीप्तामग्निशिखामिव ॥०१-७३-१५॥
sa nāhuṣaḥ prekṣamāṇa udapānaṃ gatodakam। dadarśa kanyāṃ tāṃ tatra dīptām agniśikhām iva ॥01-73-15॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; नाहुषः (nāhuṣaḥ) - descendant of Nahuṣa; प्रेक्षमाणः (prekṣamāṇaḥ) - looking at; उदपानम् (udapānam) - well; गत-उदकम् (gata-udakam) - whose water had gone; ददर्श (dadarśa) - saw; कन्याम् (kanyām) - maiden; ताम् (tām) - that; तत्र (tatra) - there; दीप्ताम् (dīptām) - blazing; अग्नि-शिखाम् (agni-śikhām) - flame of fire; इव (iva) - like;]
(He, the descendant of Nahuṣa, looking at a well whose water had gone, saw that maiden there, blazing like a flame of fire. (01-73-15))
The descendant of Nahuṣa, looking at a waterless well, saw that maiden there, shining like a flame of fire. (01-73-15)
तामपृच्छत्स दृष्ट्वैव कन्याममरवर्णिनीम्। सान्त्वयित्वा नृपश्रेष्ठः साम्ना परमवल्गुना ॥०१-७३-१६॥
tāmapṛcchatsa dṛṣṭvaiva kanyāmamaravarṇinīm। sāntvayitvā nṛpaśreṣṭhaḥ sāmnā paramavalgunā ॥01-73-16॥
[ताम् (tām) - her; अपृच्छत् (apṛcchat) - asked; सः (saḥ) - he; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; एव (eva) - just, indeed; कन्याम् (kanyām) - maiden; अमरवर्णिनीम् (amaravarṇinīm) - having the appearance of an immortal; सान्त्वयित्वा (sāntvayitvā) - having consoled; नृपश्रेष्ठः (nṛpaśreṣṭhaḥ) - best of kings; साम्ना (sāmnā) - with conciliatory speech; परमवल्गुना (paramavalgunā) - with very charming;]
(Her he asked, having seen just then, the maiden of immortal-like appearance. Having consoled her, the best of kings, with very charming conciliatory speech.)
Having seen that maiden of divine appearance, the best of kings comforted her with very charming gentle words and asked her. (01-73-16)
का त्वं ताम्रनखी श्यामा सुमृष्टमणिकुण्डला। दीर्घं ध्यायसि चात्यर्थं कस्माच्छ्वसिषि चातुरा ॥०१-७३-१७॥
kā tvaṁ tāmranakhī śyāmā sumṛṣṭamaṇikuṇḍalā। dīrghaṁ dhyāyasi cātyarthaṁ kasmācchvasiṣi cāturā ॥01-73-17॥
[का (kā) - who; female; त्वम् (tvam) - you; ताम्र (tāmra) - copper-colored; reddish; नखी (nakhī) - having nails; श्यामा (śyāmā) - dark-hued woman; सु (su) - well; good; मृष्ट (mṛṣṭa) - polished; cleansed; मणि (maṇi) - jewel; gem; कुण्डला (kuṇḍalā) - having earrings; दीर्घम् (dīrgham) - long; for a long time; ध्यायसि (dhyāyasi) - you ponder; you meditate; च (ca) - and; अत्यर्थम् (atyartham) - exceedingly; beyond measure; कस्मात् (kasmāt) - from what cause; why; श्वसिषि (śvasiṣi) - you breathe; you sigh; च (ca) - and; आतुरा (āturā) - afflicted; distressed;]
(Who are you, copper-nailed, dark-hued, having well-polished jewel-earrings? For long you ponder, and exceedingly; from what cause do you sigh, and distressed? (01-73-17))
Who are you, with reddish nails, dark complexion, and beautifully polished jeweled earrings? Why do you ponder so deeply and sigh in distress? (01-73-17)
कथं च पतितास्यस्मिन्कूपे वीरुत्तृणावृते। दुहिता चैव कस्य त्वं वद सर्वं सुमध्यमे ॥०१-७३-१८॥
kathaṃ ca patitāsyasminkūpe vīruttṛṇāvṛte। duhitā caiva kasya tvaṃ vada sarvaṃ sumadhyame ॥01-73-18॥
[कथम् (katham) - how; च (ca) - and; पतिता (patitā) - fallen; असि (asi) - you are; अस्मिन् (asmin) - in this; कूपे (kūpe) - in the well; वीरुत् (vīrut) - creeper; तृण (tṛṇa) - grass; आवृते (āvṛte) - covered; दुहिता (duhitā) - daughter; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; कस्य (kasya) - of whom; त्वम् (tvam) - you; वद (vada) - tell; सर्वम् (sarvam) - everything; सुमध्यमे (sumadhyame) - O beautiful-waisted one;]
(How, and, have you fallen in this well covered with creepers and grass? And indeed whose daughter are you? Tell everything, O beautiful-waisted one. (01-73-18))

योऽसौ देवैर्हतान्दैत्यानुत्थापयति विद्यया। तस्य शुक्रस्य कन्याहं स मां नूनं न बुध्यते ॥०१-७३-१९॥
yo'sau devairhatāndaityānutthāpayati vidyayā। tasya śukrasya kanyāhaṃ sa māṃ nūnaṃ na budhyate ॥01-73-19॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; असौ (asau) - that; देवैः (devaiḥ) - by the gods; हतान् (hatān) - slain; दैत्यान् (daityān) - Daityas, descendants of Diti; उत्थापयति (utthāpayati) - causes to rise up, revives; विद्यया (vidyayā) - by knowledge, by sacred science; तस्य (tasya) - of that; शुक्रस्य (śukrasya) - of Śukra; कन्या (kanyā) - daughter, maiden; अहम् (aham) - I; सः (saḥ) - he; माम् (mām) - me; नूनम् (nūnam) - surely; न (na) - not; बुध्यते (budhyate) - understands, recognizes;]
(Who, by knowledge, causes to rise up those Daityas slain by the gods, of that Śukra I am the daughter; he surely does not recognize me. (01-73-19))
I am the daughter of that Śukra who, by his knowledge, revives the Daityas slain by the gods; he surely does not recognize me. (01-73-19)
एष मे दक्षिणो राजन्पाणिस्ताम्रनखाङ्गुलिः। समुद्धर गृहीत्वा मां कुलीनस्त्वं हि मे मतः ॥०१-७३-२०॥
eṣa me dakṣiṇo rājanpāṇistāmranakhāṅguliḥ। samuddhara gṛhītvā māṃ kulīnastvaṃ hi me mataḥ ॥01-73-20॥

(This is my right hand, O king, with copper-colored-nailed fingers; having grasped it, lift me up; you indeed are considered by me noble-born. (01-73-20))
This is my right hand, O king, with copper-colored nails on its fingers. Grasp it and lift me up, for I consider you noble-born. (01-73-20)
जानामि हि त्वां संशान्तं वीर्यवन्तं यशस्विनम्। तस्मान्मां पतितामस्मात्कूपादुद्धर्तुमर्हसि ॥०१-७३-२१॥
jānāmi hi tvāṃ saṃśāntaṃ vīryavantaṃ yaśasvinam। tasmānmāṃ patitāmasmātkūpāduddhartumarhasi ॥01-73-21॥
[जानामि (jānāmi) - I know; हि (hi) - indeed; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; संशान्तम् (saṃśāntam) - calmed, pacified; वीर्यवन्तम् (vīryavantam) - possessing strength, valorous; यशस्विनम् (yaśasvinam) - renowned, possessing fame; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; माम् (mām) - me; पतिताम् (patitām) - fallen; अस्मात् (asmāt) - from this; कूपात् (kūpāt) - from the well; उद्धर्तुम् (uddhartum) - to lift up, to rescue; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought, you are worthy;]
(I know indeed you, calmed, possessing strength, and renowned. Therefore you ought to raise me, fallen, from this well. (01-73-21))
I know that you are indeed calm, strong, and renowned. Therefore you ought to lift me, fallen as I am, out of this well. (01-73-21)

तामथ ब्राह्मणीं स्त्रीं च विज्ञाय नहुषात्मजः। गृहीत्वा दक्षिणे पाणावुज्जहार ततोऽवटात् ॥०१-७३-२२॥
tāmatha brāhmaṇīṃ strīṃ ca vijñāya nahuṣātmajaḥ। gṛhītvā dakṣiṇe pāṇāvujjahāra tato'vaṭāt ॥01-73-22॥
[ताम् (tām) - her; अथ (atha) - then; ब्राह्मणीम् (brāhmaṇīm) - Brāhmaṇa woman; स्त्रीम् (strīm) - woman; च (ca) - and; विज्ञाय (vijñāya) - having known; नहुष-आत्मजः (nahuṣa-ātmajaḥ) - son of Nahuṣa; गृहीत्वा (gṛhītvā) - having grasped; दक्षिणे (dakṣiṇe) - right; पाणौ (pāṇau) - in the hand; उज्जहार (ujjahāra) - raised up; ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; अवटात् (avaṭāt) - from the pit;]
(Her then, and as a Brāhmaṇa woman, having known, the son of Nahuṣa, having grasped her in the right hand, raised her up thereafter from the pit.)
Then the son of Nahuṣa, recognizing her as a Brāhmaṇa woman, took her by the right hand and lifted her out of the pit. (01-73-22)
उद्धृत्य चैनां तरसा तस्मात्कूपान्नराधिपः। आमन्त्रयित्वा सुश्रोणीं ययातिः स्वपुरं ययौ ॥०१-७३-२३॥
uddhṛtya caināṃ tarasā tasmātkūpānnarādhipaḥ। āmantrayitvā suśroṇīṃ yayātiḥ svapuraṃ yayau ॥01-73-23॥
[उद्धृत्य (uddhṛtya) - having drawn up, having lifted out; च (ca) - and; एनाम् (enām) - her; तरसा (tarasā) - with force, swiftly; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - from that; कूपात् (kūpāt) - from the well; नराधिपः (narādhipaḥ) - lord of men, king; आमन्त्रयित्वा (āmantrayitvā) - having addressed, having taken leave of; सुश्रोणीम् (suśroṇīm) - the fair-hipped woman; ययातिः (yayātiḥ) - Yayāti; स्वपुरम् (svapuram) - to his own city; ययौ (yayau) - went;]
(Having drawn her up quickly from that well, the lord of men, Yayāti, having addressed the fair-hipped one, went to his own city. (01-73-23))
After swiftly drawing her out of that well, King Yayāti addressed the fair-hipped woman and went to his own city. (01-73-23)

त्वरितं घूर्णिके गच्छ सर्वमाचक्ष्व मे पितुः। नेदानीं हि प्रवेक्यामि नगरं वृषपर्वणः ॥०१-७३-२४॥
tvaritaṃ ghūrṇike gaccha sarvamācakṣva me pituḥ। nedānīṃ hi pravekyāmi nagaraṃ vṛṣaparvaṇaḥ ॥01-73-24॥
[त्वरितम् (tvaritam) - quickly; घूर्णिके (ghūrṇike) - O Ghūrṇikā; गच्छ (gaccha) - go; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; आचक्ष्व (ācakṣva) - tell; मे (me) - to my; पितुः (pituḥ) - father; न (na) - not; इदानीम् (idānīm) - now; हि (hi) - for; प्रवेक्यामि (pravekyāmi) - I shall enter; नगरम् (nagaram) - city; वृषपर्वणः (vṛṣaparvaṇaḥ) - of Vṛṣaparvan;]
(Quickly, O Ghūrṇikā, go, tell all to my father. For now I shall not enter the city of Vṛṣaparvan. (01-73-24))
Go quickly, O Ghūrṇikā, and tell everything to my father. For I will not enter Vṛṣaparvan's city now. (01-73-24)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

sā tu vai tvaritaṃ gatvā ghūrṇikāsuramandiram। dṛṣṭvā kāvyamuvācedaṃ sambhramāviṣṭacetanā ॥01-73-25॥
[सा (sā) - she; तु (tu) - but; वै (vai) - indeed; त्वरितम् (tvaritam) - quickly; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; घूर्णिकासुर (ghūrṇikāsura) - Ghūrṇikāsura; मन्दिरम् (mandiram) - abode; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; काव्यम् (kāvyam) - Kāvya; उवाच (uvāca) - said; इदम् (idam) - this; सम्भ्रम (sambhrama) - agitation; आविष्ट (āviṣṭa) - possessed; चेतना (cetanā) - consciousness;]
(She, but indeed, having gone quickly to the abode of Ghūrṇikāsura, having seen Kāvya, said this, her consciousness possessed by agitation. (01-73-25))
But she quickly went to the abode of Ghūrṇikāsura and, seeing Kāvya, said this, her mind overcome with agitation. (01-73-25)
आचक्षे ते महाप्राज्ञ देवयानी वने हता। शर्मिष्ठया महाभाग दुहित्रा वृषपर्वणः ॥०१-७३-२६॥
ācakṣe te mahāprājña devayānī vane hatā। śarmiṣṭhayā mahābhāga duhitrā vṛṣaparvaṇaḥ ॥01-73-26॥
[आचक्षे (ācakṣe) - I tell; ते (te) - to you; महा-प्राज्ञ (mahā-prājña) - O greatly wise one; देवयानी (devayānī) - Devayānī; वने (vane) - in the forest; हता (hatā) - slain; शर्मिष्ठया (śarmiṣṭhayā) - by Śarmiṣṭhā; महा-भाग (mahā-bhāga) - O highly fortunate one; दुहित्रा (duhitrā) - by the daughter; वृषपर्वणः (vṛṣaparvaṇaḥ) - of Vṛṣaparvan;]
(I tell to you, O greatly wise one, Devayānī in the forest was slain by Śarmiṣṭhā, O highly fortunate one, by the daughter of Vṛṣaparvan.)
I tell you, O greatly wise one: Devayānī was slain in the forest by Śarmiṣṭhā, O highly fortunate one, the daughter of Vṛṣaparvan. (01-73-26)
श्रुत्वा दुहितरं काव्यस्तत्र शर्मिष्ठया हताम्। त्वरया निर्ययौ दुःखान्मार्गमाणः सुतां वने ॥०१-७३-२७॥
śrutvā duhitaraṃ kāvyastatra śarmiṣṭhayā hatām। tvarayā niryayau duḥkhānmārgamāṇaḥ sutāṃ vane ॥01-73-27॥
[श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; दुहितरम् (duhitaram) - daughter; काव्यः (kāvyaḥ) - Kāvya; तत्र (tatra) - there; शर्मिष्ठया (śarmiṣṭhayā) - by Śarmiṣṭhā; हताम् (hatām) - struck; त्वरया (tvarayā) - with haste; निर्ययौ (niryayau) - went out; दुःखात् (duḥkhāt) - from grief; मार्गमाणः (mārgamāṇaḥ) - seeking; सुताम् (sutām) - daughter; वने (vane) - in the forest;]
(Having heard his daughter there struck by Śarmiṣṭhā, Kāvya, with haste, went out from grief, seeking his daughter in the forest. (01-73-27))
When Kāvya heard that his daughter had been struck there by Śarmiṣṭhā, he hurried out in grief, searching for his daughter in the forest. (01-73-27)
दृष्ट्वा दुहितरं काव्यो देवयानीं ततो वने। बाहुभ्यां सम्परिष्वज्य दुःखितो वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥०१-७३-२८॥
dr̥ṣṭvā duhitaraṃ kāvyo devayānīṃ tato vane। bāhubhyāṃ sampariṣvajya duḥkhito vākyamabravīt ॥01-73-28॥
[दृष्ट्वा (dr̥ṣṭvā) - having seen; दुहितरम् (duhitaram) - daughter; काव्यः (kāvyaḥ) - Kāvya; देवयानीम् (devayānīm) - Devayānī; ततः (tataḥ) - then; वने (vane) - in the forest; बाहुभ्याम् (bāhubhyām) - with both arms; सम्परिष्वज्य (sampariṣvajya) - having completely embraced; दुःखितः (duḥkhitaḥ) - distressed; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - statement; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke;]
(Having seen his daughter Devayānī, Kāvya then in the forest, having completely embraced her with both arms, distressed, spoke a statement. (01-73-28))
Then in the forest, Kāvya saw his daughter Devayānī, embraced her tightly with both arms, and, distressed, spoke these words. (01-73-28)
आत्मदोषैर्नियच्छन्ति सर्वे दुःखसुखे जनाः। मन्ये दुश्चरितं तेऽस्ति यस्येयं निष्कृतिः कृता ॥०१-७३-२९॥
ātmadoṣairniyacchanti sarve duḥkhasukhe janāḥ। manye duścaritaṁ te'sti yasyeyaṁ niṣkṛtiḥ kṛtā ॥01-73-29॥
[आत्मदोषैः (ātmadoṣaiḥ) - by one's own faults; नियच्छन्ति (niyacchanti) - they restrain; सर्वे (sarve) - all; दुःखसुखे (duḥkhasukhe) - pain and happiness; जनाः (janāḥ) - people; मन्ये (manye) - I think; दुश्चरितम् (duścaritam) - bad conduct; ते (te) - of you; अस्ति (asti) - there is; यस्य (yasya) - for which; इयम् (iyam) - this; निष्कृतिः (niṣkṛtiḥ) - expiation; कृता (kṛtā) - has been made;]
(By their own faults all people restrain pain and happiness. I think bad conduct of yours exists, for which this expiation has been made. (01-73-29))
All people are bound to pain and happiness by their own faults. I think there is some bad deed of yours for which this expiation has been performed. (01-73-29)
देवयान्युवाच॥

निष्कृतिर्मेऽस्तु वा मास्तु शृणुष्वावहितो मम। शर्मिष्ठया यदुक्तास्मि दुहित्रा वृषपर्वणः ॥ सत्यं किलैतत्सा प्राह दैत्यानामसि गायनः ॥०१-७३-३०॥
niṣkṛtir me’stu vā māstu śṛṇuṣvāvahito mama। śarmiṣṭhayā yaduktāsmi duhitrā vṛṣaparvaṇaḥ ॥ satyaṃ kilaitatsā prāha daityānāmasi gāyanaḥ ॥01-73-30॥
[निष्कृतिः (niṣkṛtiḥ) - redress, expiation, release; मे (me) - for me; अस्तु (astu) - let there be; वा (vā) - or; मा अस्तु (mā astu) - let there not be; शृणुष्व (śṛṇuṣva) - listen; अवहितः (avahitaḥ) - attentive; मम (mama) - to me, my; शर्मिष्ठया (śarmiṣṭhayā) - by Śarmiṣṭhā; यत् (yat) - what; उक्ता (uktā) - spoken, told; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; दुहित्रा (duhitrā) - by the daughter; वृषपर्वणः (vṛṣaparvaṇaḥ) - of Vṛṣaparvan; सत्यम् (satyam) - true; किल (kila) - indeed; एतत् (etat) - this; सा (sā) - she; प्राह (prāha) - said; दैत्यानाम् (daityānām) - of the Daityas; असि (asi) - you are; गायनः (gāyanaḥ) - singer, chanter;]
(Whether redress for me may be, or may not be, listen, attentive, to me: what I have been told by Śarmiṣṭhā, the daughter of Vṛṣaparvan. Indeed, this is true, she said: you are the singer of the Daityas.)
Whether I receive redress or not, listen carefully to what Śarmiṣṭhā, daughter of Vṛṣaparvan, said to me. She said: This is indeed true: you are the singer of the Daityas. (01-73-30)
एवं हि मे कथयति शर्मिष्ठा वार्षपर्वणी। वचनं तीक्ष्णपरुषं क्रोधरक्तेक्षणा भृशम् ॥०१-७३-३१॥
evaṃ hi me kathayati śarmiṣṭhā vārṣaparvaṇī। vacanaṃ tīkṣṇaparuṣaṃ krodharaktekṣaṇā bhṛśam ॥01-73-31॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; हि (hi) - indeed; मे (me) - to me; कथयति (kathayati) - speaks; शर्मिष्ठा (śarmiṣṭhā) - Śarmiṣṭhā; वार्षपर्वणी (vārṣaparvaṇī) - daughter of Vṛṣaparvan; वचनम् (vacanam) - speech; तीक्ष्ण-परुषम् (tīkṣṇa-paruṣam) - sharp and harsh; क्रोध-रक्त-ईक्षणा (krodha-rakta-īkṣaṇā) - having eyes reddened by anger; भृशम् (bhṛśam) - exceedingly;]
(Thus indeed to me Śarmiṣṭhā, the daughter of Vṛṣaparvan, says a sharp-harsh speech, with eyes reddened by anger, exceedingly. (01-73-31))
Indeed, Śarmiṣṭhā, the daughter of Vṛṣaparvan, says this exceedingly sharp and harsh speech to me, her eyes reddened with anger. (01-73-31)
स्तुवतो दुहिता हि त्वं याचतः प्रतिगृह्णतः। सुताहं स्तूयमानस्य ददतोऽप्रतिगृह्णतः ॥०१-७३-३२॥
stuvato duhitā hi tvaṁ yācataḥ pratigṛhṇataḥ। sutāhaṁ stūyamānasya dadato'pratigṛhṇataḥ ॥01-73-32॥
[स्तुवतः (stuvataḥ) - of one praising; दुहिता (duhitā) - daughter; हि (hi) - indeed; त्वम् (tvam) - you; याचतः (yācataḥ) - of one asking; प्रतिगृह्णतः (pratigṛhṇataḥ) - of one accepting; सुता (sutā) - daughter; अहम् (aham) - I; स्तूयमानस्य (stūyamānasya) - of one being praised; ददतः (dataḥ) - of one giving; अप्रतिगृह्णतः (apratigṛhṇataḥ) - of one not accepting;]
(Of one praising, indeed, you are the daughter, of one asking, of one accepting. I am the daughter of one being praised, of one giving, of one not accepting. (01-73-32))
Indeed, you are the daughter of one who praises, asks, and accepts; I am the daughter of one who is praised, gives, and does not accept. (01-73-32)
इति मामाह शर्मिष्ठा दुहिता वृषपर्वणः। क्रोधसंरक्तनयना दर्पपूर्णा पुनः पुनः ॥०१-७३-३३॥
iti māmāha śarmiṣṭhā duhitā vṛṣaparvaṇaḥ। krodhasaṃraktanayanā darpapūrṇā punaḥ punaḥ ॥01-73-33॥
[इति (iti) - thus; माम् + आह (mām + āha) - me + said; शर्मिष्ठा (śarmiṣṭhā) - Śarmiṣṭhā; दुहिता (duhitā) - daughter; वृषपर्वणः (vṛṣaparvaṇaḥ) - of Vṛṣaparvan; क्रोध + संरक्त + नयना (krodha + saṃrakta + nayanā) - anger + reddened + having eyes; दर्प + पूर्णा (darpa + pūrṇā) - pride + filled; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; पुनः (punaḥ) - again;]
(Thus to me said Śarmiṣṭhā, daughter of Vṛṣaparvan, anger-reddened-eyed, pride-filled, again and again. (01-73-33))
Thus Śarmiṣṭhā, the daughter of Vṛṣaparvan, her eyes reddened with anger and full of pride, said to me again and again. (01-73-33)
यद्यहं स्तुवतस्तात दुहिता प्रतिगृह्णतः। प्रसादयिष्ये शर्मिष्ठामित्युक्ता हि सखी मया ॥०१-७३-३४॥
yadyahaṃ stuvatastāta duhitā pratigṛhṇataḥ। prasādayiṣye śarmiṣṭhāmityuktā hi sakhī mayā ॥01-73-34॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; अहम् (aham) - I; स्तुवतः (stuvataḥ) - of one praising; तात (tāta) - O father; दुहिता (duhitā) - daughter; प्रतिगृह्णतः (pratigṛhṇataḥ) - of one accepting; प्रसादयिष्ये (prasādayiṣye) - I shall make pleased; शर्मिष्ठाम् (śarmiṣṭhām) - Śarmiṣṭhā; इति (iti) - thus; उक्ता (uktā) - told; हि (hi) - indeed; सखी (sakhī) - friend; मया (mayā) - by me;]
(If I, O father, am the daughter of one praising and receiving, I shall propitiate Śarmiṣṭhā; thus indeed the friend was told by me. (01-73-34))
I told my friend, "If I am the daughter of a man who praises others and accepts gifts, O father, then I will conciliate Śarmiṣṭhā." (01-73-34)
शुक्र उवाच॥

स्तुवतो दुहिता न त्वं भद्रे न प्रतिगृह्णतः। अस्तोतुः स्तूयमानस्य दुहिता देवयान्यसि ॥०१-७३-३५॥
stuvato duhitā na tvaṁ bhadre na pratigr̥hṇataḥ। astotuḥ stūyamānasya duhitā devayānyasi ॥01-73-35॥
[स्तुवतः (stuvataḥ) - of one who praises; दुहिता (duhitā) - daughter; न (na) - not; त्वम् (tvam) - you; भद्रे (bhadre) - O auspicious one; न (na) - nor; प्रतिगृह्णतः (pratigr̥hṇataḥ) - of one who accepts; अस्तोतुः (astotuḥ) - of one who does not praise; स्तूयमानस्य (stūyamānasya) - of one being praised; दुहिता (duhitā) - daughter; देवयानी (devayānī) - Devayānī; असि (asi) - you are;]
(Of one who praises, a daughter you are not, O auspicious one, nor of one who accepts. Of the non-praiser who is being praised, a daughter, Devayānī, you are. (01-73-35))
O auspicious one, you are not the daughter of one who praises, nor of one who accepts. Devayānī, you are the daughter of one who does not praise but is himself praised. (01-73-35)
वृषपर्वैव तद्वेद शक्रो राजा च नाहुषः। अचिन्त्यं ब्रह्म निर्द्वन्द्वमैश्वरं हि बलं मम ॥०१-७३-३६॥
vṛṣaparvaiva tadveda śakro rājā ca nāhuṣaḥ। acintyaṃ brahma nirdvandvamaiśvaraṃ hi balaṃ mama ॥01-73-36॥
[वृषपर्वा (vṛṣaparvā) - Vṛṣaparvan; एव (eva) - indeed; तत् (tat) - that; वेद (veda) - knows; शक्रः (śakraḥ) - Śakra; राजा (rājā) - king; च (ca) - and; नाहुषः (nāhuṣaḥ) - Nāhuṣa; अचिन्त्यम् (acintyam) - inconceivable; ब्रह्म (brahma) - sacred; निर्द्वन्द्वम् (nirdvandvam) - free from pairs of opposites; ऐश्वरम् (aiśvaram) - sovereign; हि (hi) - indeed; बलम् (balam) - power; मम (mama) - my;]
(Vṛṣaparvan indeed knows that, and Śakra and king Nāhuṣa. For my power is inconceivable, sacred, free from opposites, and sovereign.)
Vṛṣaparvan indeed knows this, as do Śakra and King Nāhuṣa. My power is truly inconceivable, sacred, beyond duality, and sovereign. (01-73-36)
