vaiśampāyana uvāca॥
Vaiśampāyana said.
tataḥ kāvyo bhṛguśreṣṭhaḥ samanyurupagamya ha। vṛṣaparvāṇamāsīnamityuvācāvicārayan ॥01-75-1॥
Then Kāvya, the foremost of the Bhṛgus, angrily approached Vṛṣaparvan as he sat and, without deliberation, spoke thus. (01-75-1)
nādharmaścarito rājansadyaḥ phalati gauriva। putreṣu vā naptṛṣu vā na cedātmani paśyati ॥ phalatyeva dhruvaṃ pāpaṃ gurubhuktamivodare ॥01-75-2॥
Unrighteousness that has been committed, O king, does not bear fruit at once, just as a cow does not immediately yield its result. If one does not see it in oneself, one sees it in one's sons or grandsons. Evil surely bears fruit, like heavy food eaten in the belly. (01-75-2)
yadaghātayathā vipraṃ kacamāṅgirasaṃ tadā। apāpaśīlaṃ dharmajñaṃ śuśrūṣuṃ madgṛhe ratam ॥01-75-3॥
When you killed the Brahmin Kaca, the descendant of Aṅgiras, who was of sinless conduct, knew dharma, desired to serve, and was engaged in my house. (01-75-3)
vadhādanarhatastasya vadhācca duhiturmama। vṛṣaparvannibodhedaṃ tyakṣyāmi tvāṃ sabāndhavam ॥ sthātuṃ tvadviṣaye rājanna śakṣyāmi tvayā saha ॥01-75-4॥
Because of the killing of that one who did not deserve to be killed, and because of the killing of my daughter, O Vṛṣaparvan, understand this: I will abandon you along with your kinsmen. O king, I will not be able to remain in your realm with you. (01-75-4)
aho māmabhijānāsi daitya mithyāpralāpinam। yathemamātmano doṣaṁ na niyacchasyupekṣase ॥01-75-5॥
Ah, O Daitya, you recognize me as a false speaker, since you do not restrain this fault of your own but overlook it. (01-75-5)
vṛṣaparvovāca॥
Vṛṣaparvan said.
nādharmaṃ na mṛṣāvādaṃ tvayi jānāmi bhārgava। tvayi dharmaśca satyaṃ ca tatprasīdatu no bhavān ॥01-75-6॥
I know neither unrighteousness nor falsehood in you, O Bhārgava. In you are righteousness and truth; therefore may Your Honor be gracious to us. (01-75-6)
yadyasmānapahāya tvamito gacchasi bhārgava। samudraṃ sampravekṣyāmo nānyadasti parāyaṇam ॥01-75-7॥
If you abandon us and go from here, O Bhargava, we shall enter the ocean; there is no other refuge. (01-75-7)
śukra uvāca॥
Śukra said.
samudraṃ praviśadhvaṃ vā diśo vā dravatāsurāḥ। duhitur nāpriyaṃ soḍhuṃ śakto'haṃ dayitā hi me ॥01-75-8॥
Enter the ocean, or flee to the quarters, O Asuras. I cannot bear anything unpleasant to my daughter, for she is dear to me. (01-75-8)
prasādyatāṃ devayānī jīvitaṃ hyatra me sthitam। yogakṣemakaraste’hamindrasyeva bṛhaspatiḥ ॥01-75-9॥
Please let Devayānī be appeased, for my life depends on this. I shall secure your welfare, just as Bṛhaspati does for Indra. (01-75-9)
vṛṣaparvovāca॥
Vṛṣaparvan said.
yatkiñcidasurendrāṇāṁ vidyate vasu bhārgava। bhuvi hastigavāśvaṁ vā tasya tvaṁ mama ceśvaraḥ ॥01-75-10॥
Whatever wealth of the lords of the Asuras exists on earth, O Bhārgava, whether elephants, cattle, or horses, you are the lord of that, and of me as well.
śukra uvāca॥
Śukra said.
yatkiñcidasti draviṇaṃ daityendrāṇāṃ mahāsura। tasyeśvaro'smi yadi te devayānī prasādyatām ॥01-75-11॥
Whatever wealth belongs to the lords of the Daityas, O great Asura, I am the master of it. If it pleases you, let Devayānī be appeased. (01-75-11)
devayānyuvāca॥
Devayānī said.
yadi tvam īśvaras tāta rājño vittasya bhārgava। nābhijānāmi tat te'haṃ rājā tu vadatu svayam ॥01-75-12॥
If you are the master of the king's wealth, dear Bhārgava, I do not recognize that authority of yours; let the king himself speak. (01-75-12)
vṛṣaparvovāca॥
Vṛṣaparvā said.
yaṃ kāmamabhikāmāsi devayāni śucismite। tatte'haṃ sampradāsyāmi yadi cedapi durlabham ॥01-75-13॥
O Devayānī, pure-smiling one, whatever desire you long for, I shall grant it to you, even if it is difficult to obtain. (01-75-13)
devayānyuvāca॥
Devayānī said.
dāsīṁ kanyāsahasreṇa śarmiṣṭhāmabhikāmaye। anu māṁ tatra gacchetsā yatra dāsyati me pitā ॥01-75-14॥
I desire Śarmiṣṭhā as my maidservant, along with a thousand maidens. Wherever my father gives me, she should follow me there. (01-75-14)
vṛṣaparvovāca॥
Vṛṣaparvan said.
uttiṣṭha he saṅgrahītri śarmiṣṭhāṃ śīghramānaya। yaṃ ca kāmayate kāmaṃ devayānī karotu tam ॥01-75-15॥
Arise, O attendant, and quickly bring Śarmiṣṭhā. Let Devayānī do whatever she desires. (01-75-15)
vaiśampāyana uvāca॥
Vaiśampāyana said.
tato dhātrī tatra gatvā śarmiṣṭhāṃ vākyam abravīt। uttiṣṭha bhadre śarmiṣṭhe jñātīnāṃ sukham āvaha ॥01-75-16॥
Then the nurse went there and spoke to Śarmiṣṭhā: "Rise, noble Śarmiṣṭhā, and bring happiness to your kinsmen." (01-75-16)
tyajati brāhmaṇaḥ śiṣyāndevayānyā pracoditaḥ। sā yaṃ kāmayate kāmaṃ sa kāryo'dya tvayānaghe ॥01-75-17॥
Impelled by Devayānī, the Brāhmaṇa abandons his disciples. The desire that she longs for must be fulfilled by you today, O blameless one. (01-75-17)
śarmiṣṭhovāca॥
Śarmiṣṭhā said.
sā yaṃ kāmayate kāmaṃ karavāṇyahamadya tam। mā tvevāpagamacchukro devayānī ca matkṛte ॥01-75-18॥
I will do today whatever desire she wishes; but Śukra and Devayānī must not depart because of me. (01-75-18)
vaiśampāyana uvāca॥
Vaiśampāyana said.
tataḥ kanyāsahasreṇa vṛtā śibikayā tadā। piturniyogāttvaritā niścakrāma purottamāt ॥01-75-19॥
Then, accompanied by a thousand maidens and riding in a palanquin, she hurried out from the excellent city at her father's command. (01-75-19)
śarmiṣṭhovāca॥
Sharmishtha said.
ahaṃ kanyāsahasreṇa dāsī te paricārikā। anu tvāṃ tatra yāsyāmi yatra dāsyati te pitā ॥01-75-20॥
I am your maidservant and attendant, along with a thousand maidens. I shall follow you wherever your father gives you. (01-75-20)
devayānyuvāca॥
Devayānī said.
stuvato duhitā te'haṁ bandinaḥ pratigṛhṇataḥ। stūyamānasya duhitā kathaṁ dāsī bhaviṣyasi ॥01-75-21॥
I am your daughter, of a bard who praises and accepts gifts; you are the daughter of one who is praised. How will you become a slave? (01-75-21)
śarmiṣṭhovāca॥
Śarmiṣṭhā said.
yena kenacidārtānāṁ jñātīnāṁ sukhamāvahet। atastvāmanuyāsyāmi yatra dāsyati te pitā ॥01-75-22॥
By whatever means one should bring happiness to afflicted kinsmen. Therefore I shall follow you wherever your father gives you. (01-75-22)
vaiśampāyana uvāca॥
Vaiśampāyana said.
pratiśrute dāsabhāve duhitrā vṛṣaparvaṇaḥ। devayānī nṛpaśreṣṭha pitaraṃ vākyamabravīt ॥01-75-23॥
After Vṛṣaparvan’s daughter had promised servitude, Devayānī, O best of kings, spoke these words to her father. (01-75-23)
praviśāmi puraṃ tāta tuṣṭāsmi dvijasattama। amoghaṃ tava vijñānamasti vidyābalaṃ ca te ॥01-75-24॥
I shall enter the city, dear one; I am pleased, O best of the twice-born. Your knowledge is unfailing, and you possess the power of learning. (01-75-24)
evamukto duhitrā sa dvijaśreṣṭho mahāyaśāḥ। praviveśa puraṁ hṛṣṭaḥ pūjitaḥ sarvadānavaiḥ ॥01-75-25॥
Thus addressed by his daughter, the greatly renowned best of the twice-born entered the city joyfully, honored by all the Dānavas. (01-75-25)
