अथ दीर्घस्य कालस्य देवयानी नृपोत्तम। वनं तदेव निर्याता क्रीडार्थं वरवर्णिनी ॥०१-७६-१॥
atha dīrghasya kālasya devayānī nṛpottama। vanaṃ tadeva niryātā krīḍārthaṃ varavarṇinī ॥01-76-1॥
[अथ (atha) - then; दीर्घस्य (dīrghasya) - of long; कालस्य (kālasya) - of time; देवयानी (devayānī) - Devayānī; नृप (nṛpa) - king; उत्तम (uttama) - best; वनम् (vanam) - forest; तत् (tat) - that; एव (eva) - very; निर्याता (niryātā) - gone out; क्रीडा (krīḍā) - play; अर्थम् (artham) - for the purpose; वर (vara) - excellent; वर्णिनी (varṇinī) - complexioned woman;]
(Then, of a long time, Devayānī, O best of kings, to that very forest had gone out for the purpose of play, the excellent-complexioned one. (01-76-1))
Then, after a long time, Devayānī, O best of kings, the fair-complexioned lady, went out to that very forest for sport. (01-76-1)
तेन दासीसहस्रेण सार्धं शर्मिष्ठया तदा। तमेव देशं सम्प्राप्ता यथाकामं चचार सा ॥ ताभिः सखीभिः सहिता सर्वाभिर्मुदिता भृशम् ॥०१-७६-२॥
tena dāsīsahasreṇa sārdhaṃ śarmiṣṭhayā tadā। tameva deśaṃ samprāptā yathākāmaṃ cacāra sā ॥ tābhiḥ sakhībhiḥ sahitā sarvābhirmuditā bhṛśam ॥01-76-2॥
[तेन (tena) - with that; दासी (dāsī) - maidservant; सहस्रेण (sahasreṇa) - with a thousand; सार्धम् (sārdham) - together with; शर्मिष्ठया (śarmiṣṭhayā) - with Śarmiṣṭhā; तदा (tadā) - then; तम् (tam) - that; एव (eva) - very; देशम् (deśam) - place; सम्प्राप्ता (samprāptā) - having reached; यथा (yathā) - according to; कामम् (kāmam) - desire; चचार (cacāra) - roamed; सा (sā) - she; ताभिः (tābhiḥ) - by those; सखीभिः (sakhībhiḥ) - female friends; सहिता (sahitā) - accompanied; सर्वाभिः (sarvābhiḥ) - by all; मुदिता (muditā) - delighted; भृशम् (bhṛśam) - greatly;]
(With that thousand of maidservants, together with Śarmiṣṭhā, then, having reached that very place, according to desire she roamed. Accompanied by all those female friends, she was greatly delighted. (01-76-2))

क्रीडन्त्योऽभिरताः सर्वाः पिबन्त्यो मधुमाधवीम्। खादन्त्यो विविधान्भक्ष्यान्विदशन्त्यः फलानि च ॥०१-७६-३॥
krīḍantyo'bhiratāḥ sarvāḥ pibantyo madhumādhavīm। khādantyo vividhānbhakṣyānvidaśantyaḥ phalāni ca ॥01-76-3॥
[क्रीडन्त्यः (krīḍantyaḥ) - playing; अभिरताः (abhiratāḥ) - delighted, engaged in enjoyment; सर्वाः (sarvāḥ) - all; पिबन्त्यः (pibantyaḥ) - drinking; मधु + माधवीम् (madhu + mādhavīm) - sweet liquor, Mādhavī wine; खादन्त्यः (khādantyaḥ) - eating; विविधान् (vividhān) - various; भक्ष्यान् (bhakṣyān) - eatables, foods to be eaten; विदशन्त्यः (vidaśantyaḥ) - biting into, chewing; फलानि (phalāni) - fruits; च (ca) - and;]
(Playing, delighted, all of them, drinking the sweet Mādhavī liquor, eating various eatables, and biting fruits. (01-76-3))
All of them were playing delightedly, drinking sweet Mādhavī wine, eating various foods, and biting into fruits. (01-76-3)
पुनश्च नाहुषो राजा मृगलिप्सुर्यदृच्छया। तमेव देशं सम्प्राप्तो जलार्थी श्रमकर्शितः ॥०१-७६-४॥
punaśca nāhuṣo rājā mṛgalipsuryadṛcchayā। tameva deśaṁ samprāpto jalārthī śramakarśitaḥ ॥01-76-4॥
[पुनः (punaḥ) - again; च (ca) - and; नाहुषः (nāhuṣaḥ) - descendant of Nahuṣa; राजा (rājā) - king; मृग (mṛga) - game, deer; लिप्सुः (lipsuḥ) - desirous of obtaining; यदृच्छया (yadṛcchayā) - by chance; तम् (tam) - that; एव (eva) - very; देशम् (deśam) - region, place; सम्प्राप्तः (samprāptaḥ) - arrived, reached; जलार्थी (jalārthī) - seeking water; श्रम (śrama) - fatigue, toil; कर्शितः (karśitaḥ) - worn down, emaciated;]
(And again the Nāhuṣa king, desirous of obtaining game, by chance, that very region reached, seeking water, worn down by fatigue. (01-76-4))
Again, King Nāhuṣa, seeking game, happened by chance to arrive at that very region, looking for water and worn out by fatigue. (01-76-4)
ददृशे देवयानीं च शर्मिष्ठां ताश्च योषितः। पिबन्तीर्ललमानाश्च दिव्याभरणभूषिताः ॥०१-७६-५॥
dadṛśe devayānīṃ ca śarmiṣṭhāṃ tāśca yoṣitaḥ। pibantīrlalamānāśca divyābharaṇabhūṣitāḥ ॥01-76-5॥

(He saw Devayānī and Śarmiṣṭhā and those women, drinking, sporting, and adorned with divine ornaments.)

उपविष्टां च ददृशे देवयानीं शुचिस्मिताम्। रूपेणाप्रतिमां तासां स्त्रीणां मध्ये वराङ्गनाम् ॥ शर्मिष्ठया सेव्यमानां पादसंवाहनादिभिः ॥०१-७६-६॥

[उपविष्टाम् (upaviṣṭām) - seated; च (ca) - and; ददृशे (dadṛśe) - he saw; देवयानीम् (devayānīm) - Devayānī; शुचि-स्मिताम् (śuci-smitām) - pure-smiling; रूपेण (rūpeṇa) - by beauty; अप्रतिमाम् (apratimām) - incomparable; तासाम् (tāsām) - of those; स्त्रीणाम् (strīṇām) - women; मध्ये (madhye) - in the midst; वर-अङ्गनाम् (vara-aṅganām) - excellent woman; शर्मिष्ठया (śarmiṣṭhayā) - by Śarmiṣṭhā; सेव्यमानाम् (sevyamānām) - being served; पाद-संवाहन-आदिभिः (pāda-saṃvāhana-ādibhiḥ) - by foot-massaging and the like;]
(Seated and he saw Devayānī, pure-smiling, by beauty incomparable among those women, an excellent woman, being served by Śarmiṣṭhā with foot-massaging and the like. (01-76-6))
He saw Devayānī seated, smiling purely, incomparable in beauty among those women, an excellent lady, being attended by Śarmiṣṭhā with foot-massage and other services. (01-76-6)

द्वाभ्यां कन्यासहस्राभ्यां द्वे कन्ये परिवारिते। गोत्रे च नामनी चैव द्वयोः पृच्छामि वामहम् ॥०१-७६-७॥
dvābhyāṃ kanyāsahasrābhyāṃ dve kanye parivārite। gotre ca nāmanī caiva dvayoḥ pṛcchāmi vāmaham ॥01-76-7॥
[द्वाभ्याम् (dvābhyām) - by two; कन्या-सहस्राभ्याम् (kanyā-sahasrābhyām) - by thousands of maidens; द्वे (dve) - two; कन्ये (kanye) - maidens; परिवारिते (parivārite) - surrounded; गोत्रे (gotre) - lineages; च (ca) - and; नामनी (nāmanī) - names; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; द्वयोः (dvayoḥ) - of the two; पृच्छामि (pṛcchāmi) - I ask; वाम् (vām) - of you two; अहम् (aham) - I;]
(By two thousand maidens, two maidens surrounded, the lineages and the names, indeed, of the two of you, I ask, I.)
Surrounded by two thousand maidens, you two maidens: I ask the lineage and the names of you both. (01-76-7)

आख्यास्याम्यहमादत्स्व वचनं मे नराधिप। शुक्रो नामासुरगुरुः सुतां जानीहि तस्य माम् ॥०१-७६-८॥
ākhyāsyāmy aham ādatsva vacanaṃ me narādhipa। śukro nāmāsuraguruḥ sutāṃ jānīhi tasya mām ॥01-76-8॥
[आख्यास्यामि (ākhyāsyāmi) - I shall relate; अहम् (aham) - I; आदत्स्व (ādatsva) - receive; वचनम् (vacanam) - word, speech; मे (me) - of me, my; नराधिप (narādhipa) - O lord of men; शुक्रः (śukraḥ) - Śukra; नाम (nāma) - by name; असुरगुरुः (asuraguruḥ) - preceptor of the Asuras; सुताम् (sutām) - daughter; जानीहि (jānīhi) - know; तस्य (tasya) - of him; माम् (mām) - me;]
(I shall relate, I; receive the word of me, O lord of men. Śukra by name, the preceptor of the Asuras; know me as the daughter of him.)
I shall tell you; accept my words, O lord of men. Know me to be the daughter of Śukra, the preceptor of the Asuras. (01-76-8)
इयं च मे सखी दासी यत्राहं तत्र गामिनी। दुहिता दानवेन्द्रस्य शर्मिष्ठा वृषपर्वणः ॥०१-७६-९॥
iyaṃ ca me sakhī dāsī yatrāhaṃ tatra gāminī। duhitā dānavendrasya śarmiṣṭhā vr̥ṣaparvaṇaḥ ॥01-76-9॥
[इयम् (iyam) - this one; च (ca) - and; मे (me) - of me, my; सखी (sakhī) - female friend; दासी (dāsī) - female servant, maidservant; यत्र + अहम् (yatra + aham) - where + I; तत्र (tatra) - there; गामिनी (gāminī) - going, one who goes; दुहिता (duhitā) - daughter; दानव + इन्द्रस्य (dānava + indrasya) - of the Dānava + of the lord; शर्मिष्ठा (śarmiṣṭhā) - Śarmiṣṭhā; वृषपर्वणः (vr̥ṣaparvaṇaḥ) - of Vṛṣaparvan;]
(And this friend of mine, a maidservant, going there wherever I am, is Śarmiṣṭhā, daughter of Vṛṣaparvan, lord of the Dānavas. (01-76-9))
This Śarmiṣṭhā, daughter of Vṛṣaparvan, lord of the Dānavas, is also my friend and maidservant; she goes wherever I am. (01-76-9)

kathaṁ nu te sakhī dāsī kanyeyaṁ varavarṇinī। asurendrasutā subhru paraṁ kautūhalaṁ hi me ॥01-76-10॥
[कथम् (katham) - how; नु (nu) - indeed; ते (te) - your; सखी (sakhī) - female friend; दासी (dāsī) - female servant; कन्या (kanyā) - maiden; इयम् (iyam) - this; वरवर्णिनी (varavarṇinī) - having excellent complexion; असुर (asura) - Asura; इन्द्र (indra) - lord; सुता (sutā) - daughter; सुभ्रु (subhru) - O fair-browed one; परम् (param) - great; कौतूहलम् (kautūhalam) - curiosity; हि (hi) - indeed; मे (me) - for me;]
(How indeed is this maiden, your friend and servant, having excellent complexion, daughter of the lord of Asuras, O fair-browed one? Great curiosity indeed is for me. (01-76-10))
How is this maiden, your friend and servant, of excellent complexion, the daughter of the lord of the Asuras, O fair-browed one? I am indeed greatly curious. (01-76-10)

सर्व एव नरव्याघ्र विधानमनुवर्तते। विधानविहितं मत्वा मा विचित्राः कथाः कृथाः ॥०१-७६-११॥
sarva eva naravyāghra vidhānamanuvartate। vidhānavihitaṁ matvā mā vicitrāḥ kathāḥ kr̥thāḥ ॥01-76-11॥
[सर्वः (sarvaḥ) - everyone; एव (eva) - indeed; नरव्याघ्र (naravyāghra) - O tiger among men; विधानम् (vidhānam) - ordinance; अनुवर्तते (anuvartate) - follows; विधान (vidhāna) - ordinance; विहितम् (vihitam) - ordained; मत्वा (matvā) - having considered; मा (mā) - do not; विचित्राः (vicitrāḥ) - varied; कथाः (kathāḥ) - stories; कृथाः (kr̥thāḥ) - make;]
(Everyone indeed, O tiger among men, follows the ordinance. Having considered it as ordained by ordinance, do not make varied stories. (01-76-11))

राजवद्रूपवेषौ ते ब्राह्मीं वाचं बिभर्षि च। किंनामा त्वं कुतश्चासि कस्य पुत्रश्च शंस मे ॥०१-७६-१२॥
rājavad rūpaveṣau te brāhmīṃ vācaṃ bibharṣi ca। kiṃnāmā tvaṃ kutaścāsi kasya putraśca śaṃsa me ॥01-76-12॥
[राजवत् (rājavat) - like a king; रूप (rūpa) - form; वेषौ (veṣau) - and attire; ते (te) - your; ब्राह्मीम् (brāhmīm) - Brahmanical; वाचम् (vācam) - speech; बिभर्षि (bibharṣi) - you bear; च (ca) - and; किम् (kim) - what; नामा (nāmā) - named; त्वम् (tvam) - you; कुतः (kutaḥ) - from where; च (ca) - and; असि (asi) - you are; कस्य (kasya) - whose; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; च (ca) - and; शंस (śaṃsa) - tell; मे (me) - to me;]
(Like a king are your form and attire, and you bear Brahmanical speech. What-named are you, and from where are you, and whose son? Tell me. (01-76-12))
Your form and attire are like those of a king, and you speak in the manner of a Brahmin. What is your name, where are you from, and whose son are you? Tell me. (01-76-12)

ब्रह्मचर्येण कृत्स्नो मे वेदः श्रुतिपथं गतः। राजाहं राजपुत्रश्च ययातिरिति विश्रुतः ॥०१-७६-१३॥
brahmacaryeṇa kṛtsno me vedaḥ śrutipathaṃ gataḥ। rājāhaṃ rājaputraśca yayātiriti viśrutaḥ ॥01-76-13॥
[ब्रह्म-चर्येण (brahma-caryeṇa) - by brahmacarya, conduct pertaining to sacred study and celibacy; कृत्स्नः (kṛtsnaḥ) - entire, whole; मे (me) - my, to me; वेदः (vedaḥ) - the Veda, sacred knowledge; श्रुति-पथम् (śruti-patham) - the path of hearing, range of the ear; गतः (gataḥ) - gone, reached; राजा (rājā) - king; अहम् (aham) - I; राज-पुत्रः (rāja-putraḥ) - king's son, prince; च (ca) - and; ययातिः (yayātiḥ) - Yayāti; इति (iti) - thus, by the name; विश्रुतः (viśrutaḥ) - widely heard of, renowned;]
(By brahmacarya, the whole Veda has gone to my path of hearing. I am a king and a king's son, renowned as )
Through brahmacarya, I have learned the entire Veda. I am a king and a king's son, renowned as Yayāti. (01-76-13)

kenāsyarthena nṛpate imaṃ deśamupāgataḥ। jighṛkṣurvārijaṃ kiñcidatha vā mṛgalipsayā ॥01-76-14॥
[केन (kena) - by what; असि (asi) - you are; अर्थेन (arthena) - purpose, object; नृपते (nṛpate) - O king; इमम् (imam) - this; देशम् (deśam) - country, region; उपागतः (upāgataḥ) - come, arrived; जिघृक्षुः (jighṛkṣuḥ) - wishing to seize, wishing to take; वारिजम् (vārijam) - water-born thing, lotus; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - some, a certain; अथ (atha) - or, now; वा (vā) - or; मृग (mṛga) - deer, wild animal; लिप्सया (lipsayā) - with desire to obtain;]
(By what purpose are you, O king, come to this country, wishing to seize some water-born thing, or else with desire to obtain a deer? (01-76-14))
O king, for what purpose have you come to this country: wishing to take some lotus, or else with the desire to obtain a deer? (01-76-14)

मृगलिप्सुरहं भद्रे पानीयार्थमुपागतः। बहु चाप्यनुयुक्तोऽस्मि तन्मानुज्ञातुमर्हसि ॥०१-७६-१५॥
mṛgalipsurahaṃ bhadre pānīyārthamupāgataḥ। bahu cāpyanuyukto'smi tanmānujñātumarhasi ॥01-76-15॥
[मृग (mṛga) - deer, game animal; लिप्सुः (lipsuḥ) - desirous of obtaining; अहम् (aham) - I; भद्रे (bhadre) - O auspicious lady; पानीय (pānīya) - drinkable water; अर्थम् (artham) - for the purpose of; उपागतः (upāgataḥ) - come near, arrived; बहु (bahu) - much; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अनुयुक्तः (anuyuktaḥ) - questioned, asked; अस्मि (asmi) - am; तत् (tat) - therefore; मा (mā) - me; अनुज्ञातुम् (anujñātum) - to permit; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought;]
(Desirous of obtaining deer, I, O auspicious lady, have come for the purpose of water. And I also have been much questioned; therefore you ought to permit me. (01-76-15))
O auspicious lady, I have come seeking deer and water. I have also been questioned at length; therefore, you should permit me. (01-76-15)

dvābhyāṃ kanyāsahasrābhyāṃ dāsyā śarmiṣṭhayā saha। tvadadhīnāsmi bhadraṃ te sakhā bhartā ca me bhava ॥01-76-16॥
[द्वाभ्यां (dvābhyāṃ) - with two; कन्या-सहस्राभ्यां (kanyā-sahasrābhyāṃ) - with two thousands of maidens; दास्या (dāsyā) - with a female servant; शर्मिष्ठया (śarmiṣṭhayā) - with Śarmiṣṭhā; सह (saha) - together with; त्वत्-अधीना (tvat-adhīnā) - dependent on you; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; भद्रम् (bhadram) - welfare; ते (te) - to you; सखा (sakhā) - friend; भर्ता (bhartā) - husband; च (ca) - and; मे (me) - of me; भव (bhava) - be;]
(With two maiden-thousands, together with Śarmiṣṭhā as a slave, I am dependent on you; welfare to you; be my friend and husband.)
With two thousand maidens and with Śarmiṣṭhā as my servant, I am under your authority. Blessings to you; be my friend and my husband. (01-76-16)

विद्ध्यौशनसि भद्रं ते न त्वामर्होऽस्मि भामिनि। अविवाह्या हि राजानो देवयानि पितुस्तव ॥०१-७६-१७॥
viddhyauśanasi bhadraṁ te na tvāmarho’smi bhāmini। avivāhyā hi rājāno devayāni pitustava ॥01-76-17॥
[विद्धि (viddhi) - know; कऔशनसित्वाम्अर्हःअस्मिपितुःतव;]
(Know, O daughter of Uśanas, welfare to you; I am not worthy of you, O radiant woman. For kings are not marriageable by your father, O Devayānī. (01-76-17))
Understand, O daughter of Uśanas: may it be well with you. I am not worthy of you, O beautiful woman. For kings are not suitable for marriage by your father, O Devayānī. (01-76-17)

saṃsṛṣṭaṃ brahmaṇā kṣatraṃ kṣatraṃ ca brahmasaṃhitam। ṛṣiśca ṛṣiputraśca nāhuṣāṅga vahasva mām ॥01-76-18॥
[संसृष्टं (saṃsṛṣṭaṃ) - joined together; ब्रह्मणा (brahmaṇā) - with brahman, sacred spiritual power; क्षत्रं (kṣatraṃ) - royal power; क्षत्रं (kṣatraṃ) - royal power; च (ca) - and; ब्रह्म (brahma) - brahman, sacred spiritual power; संहितम् (saṃhitam) - united, joined; ऋषिः (ṛṣiḥ) - a seer; च (ca) - and; ऋषि (ṛṣi) - seer; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; च (ca) - and; नाहुष (nāhuṣa) - O descendant of Nahuṣa; अङ्ग (aṅga) - O dear one; वहस्व (vahasva) - carry, bear; माम् (mām) - me;]

ekadehodbhavā varṇāścatvāro'pi varāṅgane। pṛthagdharmāḥ pṛthakśaucāsteṣāṃ tu brāhmaṇo varaḥ ॥01-76-19॥
[एक (eka) - one; देह (deha) - body; उद्भवाः (udbhavāḥ) - arisen from; वर्णाः (varṇāḥ) - classes; चत्वारः (catvāraḥ) - four; अपि (api) - even though; वराङ्गने (varāṅgane) - O fair-limbed one; पृथक् (pṛthak) - separate; धर्माः (dharmāḥ) - duties; पृथक् (pṛthak) - separate; शौचाः (śaucāḥ) - purities; तेषाम् (teṣām) - among them; तु (tu) - but; ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - Brāhmaṇa; वरः (varaḥ) - best;]
(The classes, though four, are arisen from one body, O fair-limbed one. Their duties are separate and their purities are separate; but among them the Brāhmaṇa is the best.)
Though the four varṇas have arisen from one body, O fair-limbed one, their duties and rules of purity are distinct; but among them the Brāhmaṇa is foremost. (01-76-19)

[पाणि (pāṇi) - hand; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - custom, law; नाहुष (nāhuṣa) - O descendant of Nahuṣa; अयम् (ayam) - this; न (na) - not; पुम्भिः (pumbhiḥ) - by men; सेवितः (sevitaḥ) - practiced, followed; पुरा (purā) - formerly; तम् (tam) - that; मे (me) - of me, my; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अग्रहीः (agrahīḥ) - took, seized; अग्रे (agre) - first, before; वृणोमि (vṛṇomi) - I choose; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; अहम् (aham) - I; ततः (tataḥ) - therefore;]
(O Nāhuṣa, this hand-custom was not practiced by men formerly. That of mine you took first; I choose you, therefore. (01-76-20))
O descendant of Nahuṣa, this custom of taking the hand was not formerly practiced by men. You took my hand first; therefore I choose you. (01-76-20)
कथं नु मे मनस्विन्याः पाणिमन्यः पुमान्स्पृशेत्। गृहीतमृषिपुत्रेण स्वयं वाप्यृषिणा त्वया ॥०१-७६-२१॥
kathaṁ nu me manasvinyāḥ pāṇimanyaḥ pumānspṛśet। gṛhītamṛṣiputreṇa svayaṁ vāpyṛṣiṇā tvayā ॥01-76-21॥
[कथम् (katham) - how; नु (nu) - indeed; मे (me) - of me; मनस्विन्याः (manasvinyāḥ) - of a high-minded woman; पाणिम् (pāṇim) - hand; अन्यः (anyaḥ) - another; पुमान् (pumān) - man; स्पृशेत् (spṛśet) - might touch; गृहीतम् (gṛhītam) - grasped; ऋषि-पुत्रेण (ṛṣi-putreṇa) - by the son of a seer; स्वयम् (svayam) - oneself; वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - even; ऋषिणा (ṛṣiṇā) - by a seer; त्वया (tvayā) - by you;]
(How indeed could another man touch the hand of me, a high-minded woman, grasped by the seer's son, or even by you yourself, a seer?)
How could another man touch the hand of me, a high-minded woman, when it has been grasped by a seer's son, or even by you yourself, a seer? (01-76-21)

[क्रुद्धात् (kruddhāt) - than an angered one; आशीविषात् (āśīviṣāt) - than one whose poison is in the fangs; सर्पात् (sarpāt) - than a serpent; ज्वलनात् (jvalanāt) - than fire; सर्वतोमुखात् (sarvatomukhāt) - than one having faces on every side; दुराधर्षतरः (durādharṣataraḥ) - more difficult to assail; विप्रः (vipraḥ) - a learned Brāhmaṇa; पुरुषेण (puruṣeṇa) - by a man; विजानता (vijānatā) - knowing, discerning;]
(Than an angered poison-fanged serpent, than a fire with faces on every side, the vipra is more difficult to assail by a knowing man. (01-76-22))
A discerning man should know that a learned Brāhmaṇa is harder to assail than an enraged venomous serpent and than fire blazing in every direction. (01-76-22)

[कथम् (katham) - how; आशीविषात् (āśīviṣāt) - than one whose venom is in the fangs, than a venomous creature; सर्पात् (sarpāt) - than a serpent; ज्वलनात् (jvalanāt) - than fire, than that which blazes; सर्वतोमुखात् (sarvatomukhāt) - than one having mouths on every side; दुराधर्षतरः (durādharṣataraḥ) - more difficult to assail, more unassailable; विप्रः (vipraḥ) - a Brahmin, an inspired sage; इति (iti) - thus; आत्थ (āttha) - you said; पुरुषर्षभ (puruṣarṣabha) - O bull among men, O best of men;]
(How is a Brahmin more difficult to assail than a venomous serpent, than a fire having mouths on every side, thus you said, O bull among men? (01-76-23))
O best of men, how is a Brahmin, as you said, even more unassailable than a venomous serpent and a fire that has mouths on every side? (01-76-23)

ekamāśīviṣo hanti śastreṇaikaśca vadhyate। hanti vipraḥ sarāṣṭrāṇi purāṇyapi hi kopitaḥ ॥01-76-24॥
[एकम् (ekam) - one; आशीविषः (āśīviṣaḥ) - poisonous serpent; हन्ति (hanti) - kills; शस्त्रेण (śastreṇa) - by a weapon; एकः (ekaḥ) - one; च (ca) - and; वध्यते (vadhyate) - is slain; हन्ति (hanti) - kills; विप्रः (vipraḥ) - Brahmin; स-राष्ट्राणि (sa-rāṣṭrāṇi) - together with kingdoms; पुराणि (purāṇi) - cities; अपि (api) - even; हि (hi) - indeed; कोपितः (kopitaḥ) - angered;]
(One poisonous serpent kills one; and by a weapon one is slain. An angered Brahmin indeed kills even cities together with kingdoms. (01-76-24))
A single poisonous serpent kills one person, and one person is killed by a weapon. But an angered Brahmin can indeed destroy even cities together with kingdoms. (01-76-24)
दुराधर्षतरो विप्रस्तस्माद्भीरु मतो मम। अतोऽदत्तां च पित्रा त्वां भद्रे न विवहाम्यहम् ॥०१-७६-२५॥
durādharṣataro viprastasmādbhīru mato mama। ato'dattāṃ ca pitrā tvāṃ bhadre na vivahāmyaham ॥01-76-25॥
[दुराधर्षतरः (durādharṣataraḥ) - more difficult to assail; विप्रः (vipraḥ) - Brāhmaṇa; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore, from that; भीरु (bhīru) - O timid one; मतः (mataḥ) - considered, thought; मम (mama) - of me, by me; अतः (ataḥ) - therefore; अदत्ताम् (adattām) - not given; च (ca) - and; पित्रा (pitrā) - by the father; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; भद्रे (bhadre) - O gracious one; न (na) - not; विवहामि (vivahāmi) - I marry; अहम् (aham) - I;]
(The Brāhmaṇa is considered by me more difficult to assail than that, O timid one. Therefore, O gracious one, I do not marry you, not given by the father, and I.)
The Brāhmaṇa, therefore, is regarded by me as still harder to assail, O timid one. Therefore, O gracious lady, I will not marry you, since you have not been given by your father. (01-76-25)

[दत्ताम् (dattām) - given; वहस्व (vahasva) - take; पित्रा (pitrā) - by the father; माम् (mām) - me; त्वम् (tvam) - you; हि (hi) - for; राजन् (rājan) - O king; वृतः (vṛtaḥ) - chosen; मया (mayā) - by me; अयाचतः (ayācataḥ) - of one not asking; भयम् (bhayam) - fear; न (na) - not; अस्ति (asti) - is; दत्ताम् (dattām) - given; च (ca) - and; प्रतिगृह्णतः (pratigṛhṇataḥ) - of one accepting;]
(Given by the father, take me; for you, O king, have been chosen by me. For one not asking, there is no fear, and for one accepting what is given.)
Take me, given by my father, for you, O king, have been chosen by me. There is no fear for one who has not asked, nor for one who accepts what is given. (01-76-26)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

tvaritaṁ devayānyātha preṣitaṁ piturātmanaḥ। śrutvaiva ca sa rājānaṁ darśayāmāsa bhārgavaḥ ॥01-76-27॥
[त्वरितम् (tvaritam) - swiftly; देवयान्या (devayānyā) - by Devayānī; अथ (atha) - then; प्रेषितम् (preṣitam) - sent; पितुः (pituḥ) - of the father; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of herself; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; एव (eva) - just; च (ca) - and; सः (saḥ) - he; राजानम् (rājānam) - the king; दर्शयामास (darśayāmāsa) - showed; भार्गवः (bhārgavaḥ) - the descendant of Bhṛgu;]
(Then, having just heard the swift sent message by Devayānī for her own father, that Bhārgava showed the king.)
Then, as soon as Bhārgava heard the swift message sent by Devayānī to her own father, he appeared before the king. (01-76-27)
दृष्ट्वैव चागतं शुक्रं ययातिः पृथिवीपतिः। ववन्दे ब्राह्मणं काव्यं प्राञ्जलिः प्रणतः स्थितः ॥०१-७६-२८॥
dr̥ṣṭvaiva cāgataṃ śukraṃ yayātiḥ pr̥thivīpatiḥ। vavande brāhmaṇaṃ kāvyaṃ prāñjaliḥ praṇataḥ sthitaḥ ॥01-76-28॥
[दृष्ट्वा (dr̥ṣṭvā) - having seen; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and; आगतम् (āgatam) - come, arrived; शुक्रम् (śukram) - Śukra; ययातिः (yayātiḥ) - Yayāti; पृथिवीपतिः (pr̥thivīpatiḥ) - lord of the earth; ववन्दे (vavande) - saluted, bowed to; ब्राह्मणम् (brāhmaṇam) - the Brāhmaṇa; काव्यम् (kāvyam) - Kāvya, descendant of Kavi; प्राञ्जलिः (prāñjaliḥ) - with folded hands; प्रणतः (praṇataḥ) - bowed down; स्थितः (sthitaḥ) - standing;]
(Having seen indeed Śukra come, Yayāti, the lord of the earth, with folded hands, bowed down, standing, saluted the Brāhmaṇa Kāvya. (01-76-28))
When Yayāti, the lord of the earth, saw that Śukra had arrived, he stood with folded hands and bowed down, saluting the Brāhmaṇa Kāvya. (01-76-28)

[राजा (rājā) - king; अयम् (ayam) - this; नाहुषः (nāhuṣaḥ) - descendant of Nahuṣa; तात (tāta) - O father; दुर्गे (durge) - in difficulty; मे (me) - my; पाणिम् (pāṇim) - hand; अग्रहीत् (agrahīt) - took; नमः (namaḥ) - salutation; ते (te) - to you; देहि (dehi) - give; माम् (mām) - me; अस्मै (asmai) - to him; न (na) - not; अन्यम् (anyam) - another; लोके (loke) - in the world; पतिम् (patim) - husband; वृणे (vṛṇe) - I choose;]
(This king, a descendant of Nahuṣa, O father, in difficulty took my hand. Salutation to you, give me to him; no other husband in the world do I choose. (01-76-29))
O father, this king, a descendant of Nahuṣa, took my hand in difficulty. I bow to you; give me to him, for I choose no other husband in the world. (01-76-29)
शुक्र उवाच॥

[वृतः (vṛtaḥ) - chosen; अनया (anayā) - by this one; पतिः (patiḥ) - husband; वीर (vīra) - O hero; सुतया (sutayā) - by the daughter; त्वम् (tvam) - you; मम (mama) - my; इष्टया (iṣṭayā) - beloved; गृहाण (gṛhāṇa) - accept; इमाम् (imām) - this; मया (mayā) - by me; दत्ताम् (dattām) - given; महिषीम् (mahiṣīm) - queen; नहुषात्मज (nahuṣātmaja) - O son of Nahuṣa;]
(Chosen by this beloved daughter of mine as husband, O hero, you are. Accept this queen given by me, O son of Nahuṣa. (01-76-30))

[अधर्मः (adharmaḥ) - unrighteousness; sin; non-dharma; न (na) - not; स्पृशेत् (spṛśet) - may touch; एवम् (evam) - thus; in this way; महान् (mahān) - great; माम् (mām) - me; इह (iha) - here; भार्गव (bhārgava) - O descendant of Bhṛgu; वर्ण (varṇa) - class; social order; सङ्कर (saṅkara) - mixing; confusion; जः (jaḥ) - born; arisen; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brahman; O Brāhmaṇa; इति (iti) - thus; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; प्रवृणोमि (pravṛṇomi) - I choose; I solicit; अहम् (aham) - I;]
(May adharma, great and born from varṇa-mixture, not touch me thus here, O Bhārgava, O Brahman; thus I choose you, I. (01-76-31))
O Bhārgava, O Brahman, I choose you so that no great sin born of varṇa-mixture may touch me here in this way. (01-76-31)

अधर्मात्त्वां विमुञ्चामि वरयस्व यथेप्षितम्। अस्मिन्विवाहे मा ग्लासीरहं पापं नुदामि ते ॥०१-७६-३२॥
adharmāttvāṃ vimuñcāmi varayasva yathepṣitam। asminvivāhe mā glāsīrahaṃ pāpaṃ nudāmi te ॥01-76-32॥
[अधर्मात् (adharmāt) - from unrighteousness; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; विमुञ्चामि (vimuñcāmi) - I release; वरयस्व (varayasva) - choose; यथा (yathā) - as; ईप्षितम् (īpṣitam) - desired; अस्मिन् (asmin) - in this; विवाहे (vivāhe) - marriage; मा (mā) - do not; ग्लासीः (glāsīḥ) - be weary; अहम् (aham) - I; पापम् (pāpam) - sin; नुदामि (nudāmi) - I drive away; ते (te) - for you;]
(From unrighteousness you I release; choose as desired. In this marriage do not become dejected; I drive away the sin for you. (01-76-32))
I release you from unrighteousness; choose as you desire. Do not be distressed in this marriage; I drive away your sin. (01-76-32)
वहस्व भार्यां धर्मेण देवयानीं सुमध्यमाम्। अनया सह सम्प्रीतिमतुलां समवाप्स्यसि ॥०१-७६-३३॥
vahasva bhāryāṃ dharmeṇa devayānīṃ sumadhyamām। anayā saha samprītimatulāṃ samavāpsyasi ॥01-76-33॥
[वहस्व (vahasva) - accept, lead home in marriage; भार्याम् (bhāryām) - wife, one to be maintained; धर्मेण (dharmeṇa) - by dharma, according to righteousness; देवयानीम् (devayānīm) - Devayānī; सुमध्यमाम् (su-madhyamām) - having a beautiful middle, beautifully-waisted; अनया (anayā) - with this woman; सह (saha) - together with; सम्प्रीतिम् (samprītim) - complete joy, affection; अतुलाम् (atulām) - incomparable, unequalled; समवाप्स्यसि (samavāpsyasi) - you will fully obtain, you will attain;]
(Accept as wife, according to dharma, Devayānī, the beautifully-waisted one. Together with this one, you will obtain incomparable complete delight. (01-76-33))
Accept the beautifully waisted Devayānī as your wife in accordance with dharma. With her, you will obtain incomparable happiness. (01-76-33)
इयं चापि कुमारी ते शर्मिष्ठा वार्षपर्वणी। सम्पूज्या सततं राजन्मा चैनां शयने ह्वयेः ॥०१-७६-३४॥
iyaṁ cāpi kumārī te śarmiṣṭhā vārṣaparvaṇī। sampūjyā satataṁ rājanmā caināṁ śayane hvayeḥ ॥01-76-34॥
[इयम् (iyam) - this; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; कुमारी (kumārī) - maiden; ते (te) - of yours; शर्मिष्ठा (śarmiṣṭhā) - Śarmiṣṭhā; वार्षपर्वणी (vārṣaparvaṇī) - daughter of Vṛṣaparvan; सम्पूज्या (sampūjyā) - to be fully honored; सततम् (satatam) - always; राजन् (rājan) - O king; मा (mā) - do not; च (ca) - and; एनाम् (enām) - this one; शयने (śayane) - to the bed; ह्वयेः (hvayeḥ) - you should summon;]
(This also maiden of yours, Śarmiṣṭhā, daughter of Vṛṣaparvan, is to be always honored, O king; and do not summon this one to the bed. (01-76-34))
This maiden of yours, Śarmiṣṭhā, daughter of Vṛṣaparvan, should also always be treated with full honor, O king; and you must not summon her to your bed. (01-76-34)

[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - addressed, spoken to; ययातिः (yayātiḥ) - Yayāti; तु (tu) - indeed, but; शुक्रम् (śukram) - Śukra; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made, having done; प्रदक्षिणम् (pradakṣiṇam) - circumambulation to the right; जगाम (jagāma) - went; स्वपुरम् (svapuram) - own city; हृष्टः (hṛṣṭaḥ) - delighted; अनुज्ञातः (anujñātaḥ) - permitted, given leave; महात्मना (mahātmanā) - by the great-souled one;]
(Thus addressed, Yayati indeed, having made Śukra circumambulated, went to his own city, delighted, permitted by the great-souled one. (01-76-35))
